Long tenured creative executive Jody Williams (bio here) doesn’t just have two sons in the business, they’re also signed as writers to Jody Williams Songs. Driver Williams plays lead guitar in Eric Church’s band and has writer credits including “Smoke A Little Smoke” and Lainey Wilson’s current single, “Hang Tight Honey.” Ed Williams worked in publishing for Bug Music and Sony/ATV before establishing himself as a producer and songwriter.
CA: How and when did you guys realize dad didn’t have a typical job?
DW: I was eight or nine years old when dad took us to the Billy Ray Cyrus No. 1 party for “Achy Breaky Heart.” Everybody was coming up to my dad – famous people who I recognized. We met Billy Ray and asked to get a picture. In this now classic photo within our family, me and dad are looking at the camera and Ed is just staring at Billy Ray’s mullet. That’s one moment that sticks out for realizing he didn’t have a regular job.

Country Goes Full Cirque
EW: I remember songwriters being around the house, and lots of memories of dad coming home for dinner and going back out to a show after. Usually to The Bluebird, which was just down the road. Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn being at the house was very normal. They were like uncles, and we grew up with their kids. My first memory of actually getting it – getting music – was going to Mike Henderson & The Blue Bloods shows every Monday at The Bluebird. That’s when I completely fell in love with music.

The first of its touring shows to premiere anywhere other than Montreal, Cirque du Soleil’s Songblazers: A Journey Into Country Music bowed earlier this month in Nashville. Developed in partnership with UMG/ Nashville, the production marries a UMG-centric playlist of country staples with the acrobatics and aerial work for which Cirque is widely known.
Touring in coming weeks to Birmingham, St. Louis, Columbus, New Orleans, Baltimore, Dallas and Austin, among others, the idea for Songblazers started smaller. While UMG has a relationship on the corporate level from working on the Beatles Love show, a Nashville connection didn’t exist before 2022. “A board member introduced Cirque to UMGN, and Cirque followed by coming to visit

Nashville to understand better why it was named Music City,” says Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group Dir./Communications Amélie Robitaille
“The Cirque executives expressed an interest in exploring opportunities in country music and were introduced to [UMGN Chair] Cindy Mabe and me,” says EVP/COO Mike Harris. “The initial meeting was more about the Nashville market opportunities and filling what was felt as a gap in our local entertainment scene. However, once the creative meetings started, Cindy and the whole team saw the opportunity to create something that put the history of country music on display as well as weave new music into the narrative.” Adds Robitaille, “It was a unanimous love at first sight for the company, and what started as a project of a seasonal show in Nashville quickly became a touring show.”
“The markets were chosen as a combination of both key country music markets – both in airplay and in revenue – as well as past Cirque touring history,” Harris says. Marketing is a mix of out-of-home, TV, radio, print and digital. “A percentage of radio buys will definitely be placed on Country stations,” says Robitaille. “However, given the broader appeal of many country artists/songs, we are targeting top mainstream stations in each market just as heavily. The market for this show goes beyond the two categories of just Cirque fans and country fans. It will appeal to music fans, theatre goers, general fans and more.”
The mix of music indeed runs the gamut from classics like Willie Nelson’s “Hello Walls” and “Crazy” in the first act, to “Red Solo Cup,” “Tennessee Whiskey” and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” in the second. A live band plays throughout, though tracks – particularly vocals (Toby Keith, Shania Twain and others) – supplement the live audio during many segments. Aerialists, a juggler, acro bar and human pyramid acts are among the visual highlights. And the show’s theme song, “Carnival Heart,” was written specially for the production by UMGN artist Sam Williams, whose grandfather Hank Williams is featured via performances of his “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”
As to whether the target audience is Cirque fans or country fans, Harris says both ... and more. “We also see this as a pure entertainment play as you don’t have to historically be a fan of either to enjoy the show.” –Chuck Aly

Congratulations to Post Malone, Morgan Wallen, Stacy Blythe, Tyler Waugh and the Big Loud promotion team on holding “I Had Some Help” at No. 1 for a third week. Songwriters are Louis Bell, Ryan Vojtesak, Hoskins, Ernest Keith Smith, Ashley Gorley, Chandler Paul Walters, Austin Post and Wallen.
Kudos to Kevin Herring and the Triple Tigers promotion team on scoring 77 adds for “Bones” by Russell Dickerson. This is just his second time to lead the CA/MB Add Board, his “Home Sweet” in 2021 was also the label’s first time to lead the Board.

Did you encourage music in the house, Jody?
JW: I never really pushed it, but I have played guitar every day of my life since I started to learn how. There was a wall in the rec room where several guitars were hanging, and they both loved music from the get-go. Driver became interested in guitar and Ed was interested in drums at first. They found their own joy in it.
How much did you bring them to work and events?
JW: I was big on all of that. Whatever concert they wanted to go to, I tried to arrange that – and I would take them to writer’s nights. There’s a cool old picture of me holding Ed when he was about four or five at Douglas Corner. Driver became more interested in rock bands, so we would go to all those shows.
Did you guys grow up wanting careers in music?
DW: Our mom got us involved in sports, so that was a huge part of life up until I was 13 or 14 years old. That’s when I asked dad to teach me how to play all the chords. I started taking guitar lessons and sports quickly fell by the wayside. I locked myself in my room for a summer – really figuring it out. By the time I was 17, I knew I wanted to do it as a career. I was good friends with Mindy McCready’s younger brother, and she took a liking to me. Her guitar player quit before a radio tour in 1999, and she said, “Driver, learn my songs. You’re going on the road with me.” And my parents let me.
EW: I was a very curious musician who wanted to learn every instrument. By the time I was in middle school I started dabbling in recording, and throughout high school knew I wanted to be a producer. I always looked up to music makers and wanted to emulate the people whose music I respected.
Did you give them advice, Jody?
JW: I don’t remember doing that with Ed as much as with Driver. When Driver graduated from Arizona State, I tried to help him meet people in the industry. He really wanted to be a road musician. Songwriting was not in his scope just yet, but it would get there very fast. Ed had a more varied interest, and any way I could facilitate him knowing more about those particular areas, I did. In the formative years, I remember taking them to school and always having a box of demos in my car. We would play “smash or trash” on the way to school. And I listened to their opinions.
DW: A literal cardboard box of cassettes. Smash or trash and the Gerry House Foundation – every day.
Now you work for your dad.
JW: I wouldn’t put it like that.
DW: He’s our publisher. Oh, so he works for you.
EW: Exactly.
What’s that dynamic like?
DW: We split publishing – as cut and dry as you could possibly get. Having played that game with him growing up, I’ve got a pretty good idea about the quality of songs I’m turning in. Sometimes they agree with me and sometimes they don’t.
EW: I spent a decade as a publisher and in artist development, so I’m very critical – especially of myself. It’s been quite the transition to go from those roles to strictly focusing on songwriting. I’m probably harder on songs than he is, but I still want to impress my publisher. And I also want to impress my dad. That is kind of a weird dynamic, but I enjoy it ... very much.
Where does being a publisher stop and being dad start?
JW: They’re mingled together every day. I try not to be dad in the professional sense. When these guys turn in songs, I treat them like all my other writers. Driver requires more interaction than Ed, who wants more space. They’re different, and I love that because when we all come together it’s greater than the sum of its parts.
Do you have memories of realizing they could succeed in the business?
JW: Driver started with Eric Church when he was being turned down by every label in town until someone finally signed him. I saw Driver just light it up from there, and that was that. Ed worked early on with Thomas Rhett, and my wife and I went up to Louisville to see them at a little festival show. Watching him supporting Thomas, playing all the parts and really doing it –I was like, “Wow.”
Any other favorite memories?
DW: I was really into heavy metal – still am – but was away at summer camp when Megadeth came to 328 Performance Hall. My dad took one of my friends because he couldn’t find anyone else to go. Every time I see that guy, he still brings that up.
EW: Who was it?
DW: Josh Martin – son of [Country Music Hall of Famer and A-list session guitarist] Grady Martin. Josh is also a great guitar player, and guitar tech for Brooks & Dunn.
Final thoughts?
DW: Dad got the Songwriters Advocate Award from CMA last year, probably because there are so many stories like that of him bringing joy to songwriters and musicians.
EW: Early on, it was pretty evident how sensitive and understanding our dad was to creative people. I’ve certainly carried that through with all of the people I’ve ever worked with. And I’ve come to realize that it’s special. He does it differently than everybody else – just being as sympathetic or empathetic as possible to people in the creative process. To simplify it, that’s what he’s great at.
DW: Totally agree. –Chuck Aly CAC
