Mike Rogers Empties The Vault

Former Curb National Mike Rogers – now retired – spills the tea from his long and storied career in radio promotion.

Starting in the mailroom in 1988, I had a front row seat to all the comings and goings at CBS Records (later Sony). Among the mundane tasks the job required, I was the keeper of the only key in existence to the Echo Chamber – a small room on the roof of the legendary Quonset Hut studio that was visible from the parking lot. To get to it, you had to pass through the publicity area of the building and climb a ladder to the attic, from which you could access the roof. The Echo Chamber had been used as a reverb room when the studio was operational, but when that shuttered it was the place to go and get your “smoke” on. So when someone asked me for the key to the Echo Chamber, I learned a lot about that person.

Two Sparrows: From the mailroom I moved on to a long stint at Epic Records where my first true mentor, the late Jack Lameier (RIP), led our team. Calling those days and that staff legendary is an understatement – from our famous shower cap and lotion parties (IYKYK), to our equally famous showcases in Austin, Vegas and Nashville. One memory that stands out was a local Nashville affair at Bourbon Street Blues Bar, where all our artists performed a CRS showcase. With the bar packed to the rafters and just before Ty Herndon’s set, Tanya Tucker and then-NBC news anchor Stone Phillips crashed our party. Tanya was a friend of Ty’s and, properly buzzed, jumped onstage to sing with him near the end of the set. Feeling frisky after it ended, she decided to flash her boobs to the crowd.

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Scotty McCreery, Kevin Herring and the Triple Tigers promotion team on landing “Cab In A Solo” at No. 1. This is McCreery’s sixth chart topper. Songwriters are Brent Anderson, Frank Rogers and McCreery.

Kudos to RJ Meacham and the Curb team on scoring 104 adds for “Drinkin’ Buddies” by Lee Brice featuring Nate Smith and Hailey Whitters. This is the largest Add Board total in Brice’s career, surpassing the 73 he scored for “One Of Them Girls” four years ago this month. It is also the largest add week for the label since 2001’s “Grown Men Don’t Cry” by Tim McGraw

Mike Rogers Empties The Vault

(continued from page 1)

I was standing towards the back of the room next to Jack, who barked at me to go get her the hell off the stage. I sharply replied, “I’m not man enough.” So Jack stormed up onstage and said, “Get the f- off my stage!” She replied, “Who the hell are you?” “I’m Jack Lameier, now get the hell out

of here!” It was a little testy, but she finally had a moment of clarity and left. The next day, Jim Dorman and I had t-shirts made to wear at CRS that said, “Capitol has her hits, Epic has her ...”

Living In The Moment: My regional years at Sony’s Dallas branch did not slow down. Ty Herndon came out of the gate red hot with “What Mattered Most” and, after we peaked at No. 1, we were ready to impact with “I Want My Goodbye Back.” The song charted early and as my colleague Rob Dalton put it “was on a Garth Brooks trajectory.” In June 1995, Ty was set to headline a law enforcement event in Ft Worth. His tour manager and I were waiting for him to arrive at the Worthington Hotel when the chief of police walked up to us, showed us Ty’s license and told us he’d been arrested in Gateway Park by a male undercover officer for allegedly exposing himself and an additional drug charge.

Going into crisis mode, I alerted the powers that be in Nashville and helped secure a local lawyer who was able to get the charge down to indecent exposure (which could mean various things). When we got Ty out of jail the next morning, we all thought the crisis had been averted. The next day I dropped Ty at the airport for an early flight back to Nashville ahead of that night’s “What Mattered Most” No. 1 party. I went home, showered, then headed to the office.

On my way in I got a call from his manager in Nashville, who asked if I had the radio on. Apparently Ty’s mom was listening to Young Country (KYNG), which was breaking an alleged story about what happened in Gateway Park. Apparently, someone at the station had a mole in the Ft. Worth police precinct and they elected to put what they heard on the morning show. Ty’s No. 1 party didn’t happen that day, and whatever the rumors were, (the police changed their version of the story several times to me), the damage was done.

We had crazy conversations with radio at the time and the venom some of them spewed was ridiculous. Ty will always be one of my favorite artists to have worked with – extremely talented and a genuinely nice human. We didn’t know if radio was going to cast him off, but he went on to have some big hits. “Living In A Moment,” the debut single from his second album, is my favorite song I ever worked. When Jack called me on my way in to work and told me we went No. 1, I sat in my car in the parking lot and cried. Redemption was sweet!

Bring My Showers Now: Rogers (c) with (l-r) Shelley Hargis, Rob Dalton, Robin Rhodes and the late Jack Lameier. Family Ty: Rogers (r) with Ty Herndon.

No One Else On Earth: Back in Maryland to tend to my dying mom, I drove down to cover a Wynonna radio show for WKHK/Richmond, VA. She was playing the market that night, but she agreed to do a noon listener event at an Outback Steakhouse (they were closed for lunch so we had the place to ourselves). Wynonna, a couple of players and her then-manager/husband Roach knocked the event out of the park, as usual. Afterwards, Roach cornered me and in a serious tone said that he and Wy wanted to meet with me out back in their limo. Immediately, my head went to “this is where they are going to rip me one for having them play in a damn Outback.”

A few minutes later I went outside and  Roach waved me over to the limo. The door closed behind me and it was just the three of us. Wy reached out and the three of us held hands as she broke into the most beautiful and truly heartfelt prayer for my mom. She knew it wasn’t easy for me to break away to do this event with her, and she prayed for my mom to be at peace, as well as myself and my family. I was so surprised and it was so heartfelt that it threw me off guard. I sobbed for I don’t know how long. My mom passed two days later. I still choke up anytime I tell this story. What an inspirational, out-of-body experience. The magic of Wy!

The past 35 years have been dotted with many other stories with some great (and some not-so-great) souls. Whether it was working with legends like Tammy, George, Willie, Waylon, Haggard, Dolly, Skaggs, Hank and more, or taking new artists on their first radio tour, it was always magical. I loved to connect with songwriters, too, and got to explain the ins and outs of radio to Hall of Famer Tom Douglas on his first hit (Collin Raye’s “Little Rock”) while we both lived in Dallas. My fellow label reps along the way have too many stories with me to count. Lots of shenanigans, a good portion of which can only be told over a glass of whiskey.

New album Rise and Fall is the record I’m most proud of, top to bottom. Every song feels like me. There’s autobiographical stuff, but also some songs we wrote where I played the role of a character and pieced the puzzle together to tell the story.

I’m the same person I was on American Idol. Grown, but the same kid. I feel like an old man at this point, but I’m still just 30. I’ve learned a lot about life, about who I am as a person –every little thing over the last 13 years that led to this record, and being able to write these songs.

Everything has happened for a reason. I’ve made some mistakes, and some decisions I wouldn’t have made, but you live and learn.

I co-wrote 12 of the album’s 13 songs. I’m still old school in thinking of the project as a cohesive unit. I wanted it to all flow well together and tell a story, and it does. I get pitched a lot of great songs, but if I’m going to make a record and put my name on it, it has to be something that’s really from the heart and is me. As I’ve grown, I’ve gained a real passion for songwriting –telling stories through guitar and lyrics.

“No Country For Old Men” name checks a lot of country artists and songs. I wish there was a camera on us when we wrote that one, because we were laughing and hollering, throwing out titles and lyrics. It came together really quickly and nicely. We felt like the song was supposed to be written that night. It was just a blast.

Everybody knows faith is a huge part of my life that I lean on every day. It always has been and continues to be. “Red Letter Blueprint” is the story of how I started on a high, then went through some lows in my career, and personally as well. But there’s a blueprint for you right there in the Good Book, and I wanted to have a song that spoke to that, and speaks to everybody’s story. We all go through the rollercoaster called life with ups and downs, and it’s important to have that faith to lean on.

The album cover was shot in the same spot where I proposed to my wife, Lost Cove Cliffs Overlook [in Linville, NC]. That’s basically the rock where I went down on one knee. For the cover shoot, we did a mile hike up there with all the clothes, cameras and equipment. I’m sure my team just loved it. But we got a really cool picture.

Touring with a baby is interesting. We’re actually building a bus right now that’s going to be a little more familysuited with storage, because we’ve got toys and diapers everywhere now. The dog comes too. So, it’s a little different than it used to be.

Since getting inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, I’m just still over the moon. It really played a massive role in the popularization of country music, and [I’m thrilled] just to have a seat at the table and be part of the family. I don’t want to wish my life away, but I’m looking forward to being that 80-year-old guy singing “Five More Minutes” on the Opry

She enlisted LeAnn Rimes for “Jealous Of Myself” and Maddie & Tae are featured on “Last Time Last.” “These 14 songs share a truly honest take of where I’ve been in the past couple of years,” she says. “I hope that when people listen they know that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes … and that there’s still so much happy and beautiful even in the hard times.”
