CRS First

Impressions

More than 200 first-time attendees participated in CRS 2024 Country Aircheck asked several of them for their impressions.

• WJRN/Lebanon, VT midday host Erin Bourne: I grew up, live, and work in a small town in Vermont, so to be part of something so big was such an honor. Even after hearing what my colleagues had said prior ... I was blown away. As for panels, I enjoyed “Importance of Air Talent.” I focus my show primarily on country artist news [so] this data was great to bring back to my team. And so much music. Aahhh! The luncheon at the Ryman was unbelievable. I had to keep pinching myself that I was actually there. Such a historic place. CRS was the best experience of my life.

• Audacy/Houston VP/Programming

Melissa Chase: Keith Urban showing old studio footage of playing on a cardboard box was a memorable moment. Jelly Roll and Bailey Zimmerman did fantastic jobs talking about the making of their songs. Seeing all the female programmers in one room at the Girls’ Night Out event with Megan Moroney was really special. Watching Kane Brown talk about how radio changed everything for him – to actually hear the artists acknowledge that – is a nice thing.

Jason Prinzo always brings it with his mental health talk. On one panel we learned how listeners want light-hearted content [but] we’re also having to hide our own emotions at times [which] creates a need for even more mental health care for ourselves when we turn the mics off. And AI sounds scarier than it is [so] hearing about people using it – not to get rid of people but to make more time to be creative – was spectacular.

I was nervous I wasn’t going to know people or would be seen as an outsider, but everyone is so loving and embracing, and the artists are so approachable. Everyone just wants you to be a part of the community, and

D+S Tour: Bigger Venues

“Dan + Shay should be nominated for Entertainers of the Year after what I saw,” Cox KCYY/San Antonio PD Christi Brooks told Country Aircheck after the duo’s show at the Moody Center in Austin last week (3/7). If you’re attending any of the upcoming Heartbreak on the Map Tour dates, Brooks recommends staying until the end of the show for a surprise (no spoilers).

Despite a smaller crowd due to traffic (IYKYK at that venue), Brooks says openers Hailey Whitters and Ben Rector delivered. “Hailey shined,” she said, noting how many people were singing back every word. “I love her authenticity and she is so talented.”

Dan

Describing the duo’s entrance, Brooks said, “The whole crowd was singing along to Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood,’ and on that last note when Taylor says ‘yeah,’ the arena goes completely black and Dan + Shay walk onto the stage backlit by a spotlight.” Accompanied by an acoustic guitar, the duo broke into “Save Me The Trouble,” but right before

KC & The Sunshine Band: The KBEQ & KFKF/Kansas City St. Jude radiothon brings in more than $312,000. Pictured (l-r) are Matthews, Lydia Taylor, Todd Nixon, Tater Dillion and Natalie, Debbie Erikson, Dale Carter Snow (front). + Shay Erin Bourne Melissa Chase Bryan Riley

they hit the hook, the lights went down and, “Bam! The band comes in, the ‘+’ curtain comes down from the rafters and the whole place is singing at the top of their lungs ‘saaaaaaave me the trouble.’”

The curtain falling also revealed two “giant” video screens that Brooks says was “probably one of the coolest uses of a video screen since the Taylor Swift show I saw last April.”

“I’m gonna quote Steve Pleshe on this one, ‘I didn’t have Dan+Shay-cover-The-Killers on my Bingo card,” she laughs. “Mr. Brightside” received a huge reaction, according to Brooks, but some of the loudest came during “Tequila” and “Speechless.” There was also a special moment when a couple in the front row got engaged during “From The Ground Up,” which was followed by Shay Mooney singing the rest of the song to the happy couple. “Then both Dan and Shay came off the stage to meet them, sign a set list and take a picture,” she notes.

Brooks herself got a little emotional seeing the duo finally performing live again after their break, especially early songs like “19 You + Me.” “I can remember them singing that on radio tour in our tiny conference room in Houston at 93Q and thinking, ‘These guys may be something.’ Well, they are definitely something.” Reach Brooks here. —Caitlin DeForest

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Kane Brown, Steve Hodges, Dennis Reese and the RCA promotion team on taking “I Can Feel It” to No. 1. This is Brown’s 11th overall and sixth consecutive No. 1. Songwriters are Gabe Foust, Jaxson Free, Phil Collins and Brown.

Kudos to Ryan Dokke and the Nashville Harbor crew on leading this week’s CA/MB Add Board with 94 adds for Chris Janson’s “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get.” His seventh Add Board leader, this is Janson’s largest add week ever, eclipsing the 75 recorded by “All I Need Is You” in February 2023.

CRS First Impressions

(continued from page 1)

that’s rare. I don’t know if there’s any other convention that feels that way.

• KZPK/St. Cloud middayer Bryan Riley: Expectations were that sessions would be more on the on-air side, [but] it was every part of the industry from programming to music, socials and everything in between. I was most interested in the programming and social media panels. Learning from people in large markets or that have been to the top is always great. And the Ryman lunch was spectacular. It gives you a chance to hear

the artists in a raw form.

• WNGC/Athens, GA morning host Haley Mason: There was something truly special about being surrounded by people from all across the country with the same passion. Hearing Lainey Wilson and Trisha Yearwood share their wisdom and the struggles they have faced as women in the industry was eye-opening. More than that, it reminded me how important these conversations are to have with my own network.

At “Cycle Of A Song,” Bailey Zimmerman said something I immediately wrote down: “You have to treat your fans and followers like you are all just hanging around at a potluck.” This can be directly applied to my own role. Listeners are bringing just as much to the “potluck” as you, and it’s important to be approachable and accessible. Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani performing was one of those moments I won’t forget! I also really enjoyed New Faces. Every artist in that lineup has a strong future. The introduction videos were a nice touch that allowed the artists to show their personalities.

I know how difficult it can be to break into an industry like this, so I would love for college students to have more opportunities to attend or be part of CRS. And I’m already counting down the days to next year.

• Top 40 WKHQ/Traverse City, MI PD/ morning host “Ashley Z” Elzinga: CRS felt big, [but] like no one was too big for it. The whole genre comes together, and everyone is so supportive of each other and thankful at the same time. It was surprising to literally see artists in the hallway. I was walking out of the green room for my panel, and Megan Moroney was just standing there – so cool to just run into her.

• Alpha/San Jose Mgr./Reg. Promotions Ryan Scheinrock: Expectations exceeded and more! “Your Remote Sucks: Let’s Fix It!” was very insightful on how to move away from your typical two-hour generic radio remote. The Ryman and Big Machine lunches were amazing! It’s not every day you can say you had lunch and witnessed some of the GOATs perform live right in front of you. New Faces was so cool in showing the up-and-coming rising stars of country music.

• ACM VP/Live Events & Production Ben Carter: Coming from the LA market where I worked for the Emmys, there’s not as much focus on radio. So I showed up in this ballroom and was like, “Oh my God, not only is this place packed, but everyone is super engaged.” They seem to all know each other – very clearly a community. The Ryman lunch was special. My grandfather

would go there in the ‘60s and ‘70s, so I have some nostalgia about the venue.

One panel I wanted to see but couldn’t get into the room was “Jelly Roll: Cycle of a Song.” I’m guessing there was a reason a bigger space wasn’t available. (Ed. Note: The larger space was being set up for the evening’s ping pong tournament.) In terms of logistics, the Omni makes a lot of sense. You need one location that can service six different coinciding things. It could be done in other places, but would be difficult – even in another part of Nashville.

Those logistics get complex and, in the back of mind the whole time, I was just appreciating it as someone who does this kind of work. It’s impressive.

• WTCM/Traverse City, MI PD/mornings Mike Sinclair: Honestly, I expected it to be boring, but the reality outweighed my expectations, big time. My wife and co-worker Kim came with me and we liked the “Your Remote Sucks” session on promotions. The Warner lunch was great and felt very professional. Team UMG at the Ryman did as well. And, we really enjoyed the New Faces artists. Megan Moroney and Dillon Carmichael were incredible.

• RCA/New York SVP/Promotion Jeff Rizzo and Head/Promotion Keith Rothschild:

JR: I had always heard great things ... but it wildly exceeded my expectations.

KR: Any time I told a programmer I would be attending my first CRS, they all said to pace myself. They weren’t kidding! I was expecting to see my Pop programmers, but the Country programmers welcomed us with open arms. It literally took me 45 minutes to get to the front desk to check in. “Step Out of Your Comfort Zone” was a highlight, as that’s all JR and I have done for the past seven months working Tyler Childers to a format we’ve never worked before.

JR: “One-Man Band: Tools For Today’s Programmer” and “AI: Work Smarter, Not Harder” helped me get a better understanding of what radio and programmers are going through on a daily basis.

KR: The ‘80s party was unreal. I also loved Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Russell Dickerson and Tyler Hubbard playing ping pong in a room full of programmers. And I finally had my chance to see a show at the Ryman. Absolutely incredible.

JR: We work with Kane on the Pop side, so seeing him perform at a small, intimate show was beyond crazy and he was great. But going to the Ryman for the first time and seeing big artist after big artist perform was one for the books. I was exhausted and ready to crash but decided to pop in to the ‘80s party expecting to see a cover band, but [it was] A-list artists in ‘80s attire singing covers. Those three events made me go, “Wow!” And, yes, Keith and I are confirmed for next year. I can’t wait!

• Cox/Tulsa VP/MM Mark Shecterle: I was told to be ready to go from 7am till whenever throughout CRS, and that description was spot-on. I cannot think of one area that I was disappointed in … other than I was thoroughly exhausted when I flew back. I’ve been in the business for 36 years and there is nothing that compares to this outstanding industry event. I was so blown away with how well everything looked, how welcoming everyone was and how entertaining the event was. Will I return? Not just yes, but hell yes! –Chris Huff & Chuck Aly CAC
