Market Deep Dive: Spokane
Nielsen market No. 88 is served by two full-power, current-based Country FMs – Stephens KDRK and QueenB KXLY – and one goldbased – Blue Sky KICR. Each is separately and independently owned. Throw in a fourth signal carrying iHeart national programming via an HD2-fed translator – KISC-HD2 – and Spokane is one of the format’s most interesting battlegrounds. All four stations notched five-year record-high shares in the past year, and April’s 18 shares were the largest sum in the market since 2013. Country Aircheck takes a look under the hood below and in the boxes on pages 9-11. Follow The Bouncing Ball: First, a bit Jay Daniels of Spokane Country’s complex backstory. KXLY “Coyote Country” has topped the market four of the last five months. PD Jay Daniels is half of KXLY’s Jay & Kevin Morning Show, which has been on the air since 1994, first on KDRK, then on then-Country KNFR, then back to KDRK and – since 2009 – on “Coyote.” KDRK has been Country since 1979 and was the format leader into the early 2000s. Two years after Jay & Kevin joined KXLY, KDRK re-branded from Tim Cotter “Cat Country” to “The Mountain.” KDRK PD Tim Cotter joined in Sept. 2022 after 14 years with KXLY. Prior to that, Cotter was at, you guessed it, KDRK. Got it? With its veteran duo, it’s no surprise that mornings are the focus for KXLY. “Kevin [James] and I will have been together 30 years next month,” says Daniels. “That’s unheard of in any format. We’ve had people who’ve listened to us since day one. We’ve all grown up together.” That heritage gives them a latitude Dylan Benefield many don’t have – the show averages just four songs an hour. “We want to be different, have fun, and create a bond with the listeners,” he continues. “I don’t want to be a (continued on page 7)

Harder To Get Played Or Paid?
Music consumers navigate limitless libraries. Artists and labels work tirelessly to cut through the noise. And programmers/curators face a deluge of tracks every week. As challenging as the forward facing aspects of digital music are, the back-end reality for the creators fueling the machine may be even more complex. Nashville-based digital rights management company Muserk is bringing attention to the issue with its recent “Get F’n Paid” campaign. “I was a TV composer for 20 years,” says Muserk Founder/CEO Paul Goldman. “We always got paid upfront, but a friend who worked on the label/ Paul Goldman publishing side asked me about my royalties, which

OFF THE RECORD Singer/songwriter/actor Charles Esten goes Off (The Record): Being my debut album, there’s a real sense in which I’ve been working on Love Ain’t Pretty all the way back to the time I first arrived in Nashville in 2012. Over those years, I’ve written and released a great many singles – including a Guinness World Record (54 in 54 consecutive weeks). All of that, it seems to me, was preparation for this album – my 10,000 hours, if you will, mostly spent in rooms with Music CHARLES ESTEN City’s best, learning the beautiful craft of making great music. And, most importantly, trying to discover the things that I think are most necessary to know when making an album – who I am as an artist, and what it is I’m trying to say. While “Down The Road” is the oldest of the songs on the album, “Love Ain’t Pretty,” which came to be the title track, was actually the very last to be written. In the middle of pre-production, Marshall [Altman] and I, who had never written together before, got together with one of our favorite songwriters, Jimmy Yeary. Jimmy had a great idea that got us started, and soon we realized that it was summing up many of the themes the album seemed to be addressing: life is hard, sometimes hard enough to bring you to your knees, and yet there is great beauty and joy to be found everywhere. When that line finally came out, “Love ain’t pretty. But damn, it’s beautiful,” we knew we’d found the essence of what so many of these songs were trying to say. Over the years, I’ve discovered again and again, that not only do acting and music not interfere with each other, they actually complement and contribute to each other. Acting is an incredibly collaborative endeavor. Writers, directors, editors, on and on; there are so many talented people constantly involved with and always affecting my performances. Those interactions are the work of acting, and I’ve honestly grown to love that. It, is however, a great and healthy balance to have this other thing – music – where although I still interact with so many others, especially in the production of an album, I am, nevertheless, offered a far more direct line between my thoughts and ideas and the audience that will receive them. These are my songs that I’ve written or co-written. I’ve been involved with every part of their pre-production and production. And, eventually, I will stand on a stage at a microphone and sing them to an audience who will, in that moment, respond in the way they are moved to. It’s incredibly direct and a great balance to the TV or film actor’s life where, perhaps months after we finish a production, an audience will watch it all in the privacy of their own homes. The common thread between the two? Truth. Are you saying something truthful that speaks to the audience and their lived experience? In front of the camera or behind the guitar, that is the ultimate goal. The most difficult part about finding my own voice is the fact that I have spent the better part of my life singing in other people’s voices. The role of “Deacon Claybourne” was probably more of a road back to finding my voice than anything else. Deacon is a part of that voice, if you will. The slightly deeper, smoother, sometimes sadder version with a bit more twang. My voice encompasses that too, but tends go a little higher and rock a little more often. In the end, like all singers, the voices I love and have imitated are all somewhere inside of mine, and yet, after all, it’s finally mine.

had never been on my radar. I went to ASCAP, and they basically had nothing for me. When I dug into it, I realized this industry is really screwed up.” Launched in 2017, Muserk aims to connect the backend dots between music getting played on burgeoning digital platforms and the writers and publishers who own the rights. “The tech companies like Spotify have become so advanced,” Goldman says. “Everyone [in the rights management industry] is chasing them, but they’re so far up the road, you can’t even see them anymore. The music industry let them get away. The haystack’s getting bigger and bigger and the needle’s getting smaller and smaller.” Goldman and his team developed a “distributed computing and machine learning” platform called Blue Matter to identify and claim digital content for rights holders from that haystack of digital music data. The company received a U.S. patent for the platform last March. “It’s an AIbased technology that takes a person’s copyright, scans through databases and finds things that are unlinked,” he says. “A songwriter may be registered everywhere, but the checks might be small because their stuff isn’t linked properly in the database. And a majority of them have no idea.” That’s where the “Get F’n Paid” campaign began. “This was our first foray into hiring an ad agency – GS&F,” Goldman says. “We wanted a strong message because any time I talk to people in a private setting about what we do, there’s a lot of cursing going on. People are pissed off. So we came up with a guerrilla marketing campaign around billboards and signage. We originally wanted a sign in the urinal that said, ‘Stop pissing your royalties away.’” The U.S. is the biggest and most developed market, but globalization cuts both ways. “I knew there were people from outside the country who owned rights and weren’t collecting anything from the U.S.,” he says. “On the other side, someone might be collecting in the U.S., but never see anything from APAC [AsiaPacific], Europe or other territories.” Music is getting played and royalties are being collected – it’s the distribution that can be questionable. “The money is basically in the lost and found – the black box,” Goldman says. “And after

OFF THE RECORD God’s Country podcast hosts Dan and Reid Isbell share their dream soundtrack for hunting: • “A Country Boy Can Survive” by Hank Williams Jr.: I got a shotgun, a rifle and four wheel drive and a country boy can survive. If the playlist was a body, this song would be the backbone of it. • “The Bird Hunters” by Turnpike Troubadours: It’s obvious the writer of this song has lived it. • “Where I Find God” by Larry Fleet: Sometimes you connect with the lyric and it feels like the biography of your life. This one feels like we wrote it, but had nothing to do with it. • “Huntin’, Fishin’ And Lovin’ THE BROTHERS HUNT Every Day” by Luke Bryan: This is a simple tune that’s easy to understand and it encapsulates the life of a good ol’ boy. • “Country Boy’s Prayer” by Kameron Marlowe: We wrote this song and, as we feel the city creep out into the country, this is a prayer we’ve prayed more than once. Listen here. a legally designated period – three to five years – PROs have to distribute it to somebody. What they usually do is distribute it to the market share of their members, which means, for example, Beyoncé is getting the most. But Beyoncé has a team of people working her stuff and making sure she’s already gotten what she was owed. The middle class people don’t have that, so the money owed to them just goes to her. This is how their money disappears. “In today’s world, especially in the last three or four years, if you’re not working with the kind of high-level technology we’re doing, you might be collecting some of it, but you’re not collecting all of it,” Goldman says. “There are a lot of underserved rights holders out there, and that’s who we’re trying to reach.” Learn more about Muserk here. –Chuck Aly

Congratulations to Nate Smith, Steve Hodges, Dennis Reese and the RCA promotion team on holding “World On Fire” at No. 1.
Page 7
Smith becomes the first artist to have each of their first two singles spend multiple weeks at the top since Darius Rucker’s first two releases did so in 2008-09. Songwriters are Ashley Gorley, Taylor Phillips, Lindsay Rimes and Smith. Kudos to Adrian Michaels and the Stoney Creek crew on racking up 92 adds for Jelly Roll’s “Halfway To Hell.” This is the largest add Nate Smith date in the 15-year history of the label. Congratulations to Zach Top and the Leo33 records crew, who both make their first chart appearance with the No. 46 debut of “Sounds Like The Radio.” Additionally, WKMK/Monmouth has been temporarily removed from the panel this week due to technical issues.
News & Notes
Nashville-based Lucky Money Entertainment has promoted Callie Ethridge to COO and Cassidy Best to VP, the latter position for its Lucky Money Live events division. Both have been with the company since 2022. Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” has become her first song to hit a billion streams on Spotify. Worked by UMG Nashville and UMe, the song spent most of this past holiday season at No. 1 on Spotify’s Top 50 U.S. chart. George Strait has extended his collaboration with Justin Boots with the addition of two caiman options called the Haggard (named for Merle) and two pirarucu variations called the Ocean Front. A portion of proceeds goes to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, which provides financial assistance to professional rodeo athletes. Find the boots here. The North America Country Music Hall of Fame will induct John Berry, Randy Travis, Barbara Fairchild and the late Mel Tillis March 16 at Country Tonite Theatre in Pigeon Forge, TN. Call (865) 453-2003 for tickets. Country Music Hall of Famer Ray Stevens will embark on the final run of shows at his CabaRay Showroom in Nashville beginning March 16. January 22, 2024 but he doesn’t have the heritage that Jay and Kevin have, so we tend to be more music-intensive and contest-focused,” explains Cotter. “Each station has its strengths, so we’re playing to what our P1s want.” All Their Rowdy Friends: Speaking of heritage, there’s also 22-year-old Coeur D’Alene, ID-based KICR, which simulcasts on KIBR in the nearby resort area of Sandpoint, ID. “We have the longest running Country brand in the market,” says GM/PD Dylan Benefield. Though 90% gold, the station still embraces currents. “There are already two Hot Country stations, and they do a fine job, but we’re completely different than them. We have an AOR/Triple A COVERAGE: Spokane metro outmindset, where we lined in black (KISC-HD2 is heard on translator K257FX) play gold but mix artists like Chris Stapleton, Eric Church and Miranda Lambert that match our sound. A song could be a 16-week No. 1, but if it doesn’t match, we won’t play it. If it’s something that fits with Merle or George Strait, then it works.” The local audience’s musical preferences can be distinct. “There is a flavor for artists like Zach Bryan, Warren Zeiders and Ian Munsick here,” adds Cotter. “There’s also an appetite for the more pop stuff. We’ll be quicker on some music, depending on how we want the station to feel. When Zach popped, we wanted to own that. We want to break the new artists we believe in.” Daniels agrees the market has a strong appetite for music discovery. “I love the open mindedness of our audience; it fights the stereotype of Country listeners some people outside of the format have,” he says. “When you look at the range of artists we play, the people here in the Northwest have embraced a wide variety of tastes.” According to Benefield, that embrace extends to KICR. “Someone may listen to the Top 40 station and then flip over to hear us play an old Hank Jr. song,” he says. “It’s hip to them even though it’s not new.”

That level of music appreciation also contributes to a healthy concert scene. “Even though Spokane is kind of out of the way, a lot of acts roll through here,” explains Cotter. “We’re already looking at 17 shows this year.” Benefield says KICR is involved as well. “Gold-based stations aren’t always at the top of the list for partnerships, so playing the currents that fit gives us the ability to still be a part of concerts and events.” Independents Say: The unique situations of the stations are not taken for granted. “We’re well aware of how fortunate we are,” Daniels says. “There are a lot of places where a PD doesn’t have a lot of authority over the programming, or an MD doesn’t have authority over the music. That’s not how we do it here. If you have the title, you have the authority to go do it. If it works, great. If it doesn’t, then we’ll have a conversation.” “Sometimes I have to remind myself I’ve been blessed to work in my hometown for independent radio stations most of my career,” confesses Cotter. “When Jamie and I sit down and do music every week, it’s him and I deciding what we want to do.” As for KICR’s strategy, Benefield believes it is replicable, “In other markets where there are two or three stations just doing the same thing, they might find you can pull a pretty good audience with this kind of mix. I know from programming Triple A that sometimes the audience doesn’t need a song to play 45 times a week.” “In other markets our size, there’s usually one station doing really well and a couple of outliers,” elaborates Cotter. “This market is different. There are two strong mainstream stations and a gold-based station that does well. It’s an interesting dynamic and it makes it fun.” Reach Cotter here, Daniels here and Benefield here. –Chris Huff CAC

Randall King Into The Neon (Warner/WAR) “You grow wiser with age, you grow wiser while you’re working and experiencing life, and I feel like I have a deeper understanding of what my music really is,” King reflects of the growth he’s experienced since his 2022 release, Shot Glass. “We’re moving into the neon era of country music. The pendulum is swinging, and you’re watching it happen … Now I just hope people get their mind blown.” Conner Smith Smoky Mountains (Valory) Featuring gold-certified “Take It Slow,” “I Hate Alabama” and current single “Creek Will Rise,” Smith co-penned all but one of the 12 songs on his Zach Crowell-produced, full-length debut alongside writers including Chase McGill, Thomas Rhett, Mark Trussell and Parker Welling. Charles Esten Love Ain’t Pretty (--) More than 10 years in the making, Esten’s Marshall Altman-produced debut album began taking shape when he first arrived in Nashville to play Deacon Claybourne on “Nashville.” Working with Jon Nite, Eric Paslay, Gary Burr, Leslie Satcher and more, Esten co-wrote all 14 songs.
