CRS: “Big Five” Topics Lead Agenda

The continuing importance of Country Radio Seminar (CRS) was anecdotally evidenced by a December employment posting for a PD/ air talent at Brewer WQLK/Richmond, IN that promised the winning candidate would not only land the job, but also paid registration and hotel for CRS 2024. Now less than eight weeks away (Feb. 28-March 1 at the Omni Nashville Hotel), the organization’s strongest case for ongoing interest is in the care and effort put into the annual agenda. In planning this year’s event, organizers did a considerable amount of industry outreach to identify key areas of interest. Agenda Chair Shelley Hargis and co-Vice Chairs Jesse Tack and Krista Hayes interviewed members Shelley Hargis of the Country Radio Broadcasters board, and a number of other high-profile people in the industry to discover the topics they were most curious about. “Artificial intelligence was one that really popped out,” says CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis. “Of the five big themes, that was No. 1 with a bullet. The other big theme that emerged was branding.” As the agenda leaders revealed in a September CRS360 webinar (CAT 9/28/23), this year’s panels will largely fall into one those RJ Curtis five primary themes, with the others being industry growth, diversity and something they’re calling “ballin’ on a budget.” Where industry growth may be self-explanatory, the diversity theme was deemed important by the full scope of CRS’ stakeholders. “As an organization, we want everyone to feel welcome at CRS,” Curtis says. “We want CRS to be a safe place for all to show up, do business and expose their art/content.” As for the budget theme, Hargis notes its significance “because everybody’s trying to do things with less money, [if not] little to no money.” This year’s research project is focused on personality radio, as conducted by SmithGeiger Group: “But They Have A Great Personality: On Air Talent And Their Role On All Platforms.” (continued on page 6)

Leo33 Ready To Roar In ’24

Launched last year by Firebird Music and Red Light Ventures, Leo33 has been introducing first signing Zach Top and last week hired Chris Fabiani as VP/ Promotion & Marketing. Label Head Katie Dean gives a peek under the hood: CA: What was the pitch that stole you away from MCA? KD: I was contacted by a headhunter and was intrigued by the prospect. The way the business is shifting, an entrepreneurial opportunity seemed like it might be the right fit for me. And running a Katie Dean label has been a goal of mine since I got into this

Q2

business in 1994, even though this wasn’t presented to me as running a label – more of, “We have this new venture and we feel like the conditions are right. Would you like to come be a part of it?” Probably the toughest decision I’ve ever made, primarily because our MCA team was so close. We were winning and I was happy. What is the vision? There’s not one path to success now. With the variety of experience this team has in different genres, it affords the opportunity to do things in a really efficient and agile way that’s hyper-focused on the holistic marketing picture. The tagline I use is that we provide all of the services of a major, but with the focus and agility of an independent. We are looking at things purely from an artist development mindset to be in a collaborative relationship in building an artist’s business. We’re not a label that’s chasing trends. Artist development? How old school. We’re not reinventing the wheel. This is just a nod to the foundations of blocking and tackling. The setup of Zach was a really accelerated timeline, but also very well thought out in wanting to capitalize on the dates he already had and building [radio] visits around them. The idea of an eight-month promo tour and then releasing a single is just antiquated. One of the things that’s really paramount to artists is feeling like they’re not going to lose momentum when they sign. Part of the reason we are very deliberately keeping our roster size small is so we can serve the artists we do sign. Artists ... plural? We have signed another artist that will be released at the end of the month. We have two Zach Top officially on the roster and are in conversations with a couple others. Ultimately, we would like to keep it in the five-toseven range.

Page 3

How much is Red Light involved? That’s really more about staking some of the investment, along with primary investor Firebird. I report to an advisory board – weekly chats with both companies to keep them up to speed with what we’re doing. We’re pretty much operating independently.

What’s the meaning behind the name? It was inspired by the constellation, as our core team embodies the values and characteristics of a lioness – courage, agility and care for artists. The 33 comes from the vinyl LP and is a nod to our approach of championing an artist’s entire body of work. What else? There’s enough success out there for everybody. The business environment has never been better for an entrepreneurial mindset. It’s really fun to be working with people who all share a vision of bringing the best version of ourselves forward to help artists realize their musical vision. As important as TikTok is, we’re not chasing A&R analytics. We’re going to see [prospective signees] play live. We are going to be aligned and believe in the music from the jump and if not, no harm-no foul. This is supposed to be fun and it’s supposed to be about the music inspiring you to want to go win for somebody. We all really enjoy that part of it. Reach Dean here. –Chuck Aly

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Dan + Shay, Kristen Williams, Tom Martens, Anna Cage, Michael Chase and the Warner/WAR promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1 song, “Save Me The Trouble.” This is the duo’s 10th chart-topper and their 15th total week in the top slot. The song’s jumps of 9,521 points and 2,418 spins to reach No. 1 set new record highs for both categories in the Mediabase era. Songwriters are Ashley Dan + Shay Gorley, Jordan Reynolds, Jordan Minton, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney. Kudos to Katie Dean, Chris Fabiani, Tracy Gibson and the Leo33 crew on leading 2024’s first Add Board with 55 adds for the label’s debut release, “Sounds Like The Radio” by Zach Top. This is the first time the Add Board has been topped by a release that is the debut for both artist and label since “Fix” by Chris Lane on Big Loud in Dec. 2015.

CRS: “Big Five” Topics Lead Agenda (continued from page 1) Curtis says the study focuses on “talent and content choices that hopefully bring a competitive advantage to radio platforms.” Encompassing terrestrial and satellite radio, it will also include a look at DSPs “because more of them are embracing personality-hosted programs,” Curtis says. Listeners’ feelings about AI-generated on-air “personalities” will also be explored.

Familiar elements returning this year include a broadened Digital Music Summit anchoring the seminar’s first day. Among the sessions on podcasting are one led by Sounds Profitable Partner Tom Webster (formerly SVP of Edison Media Research), which will include discussion on how to monetize music-based podcasts. Hargis, the VP/Radio Syndication & Group Strategy at BBRMG, says the digital day will also have separate sessions featuring the teams that made hits last year out of three songs: Jelly Roll’s “Son Of A Sinner,” Megan Moroney’s “Tennessee Orange” and Bailey Zimmerman’s “Fall In Love.” Formerly a CRS staple, a label heads panel is back, titled “Leadership, Strategy, And Optimizing Country’s Surge In 2024.” Sony Music Nashville’s Randy Goodman, Warner Music Nashville’s Ben Kline and Cris Lacy, BBR Music Group/BMG’s Jon Loba and UMG/ Nashville’s Cindy Mabe are scheduled, with CMA CEO Sarah Trahern moderating. Curtis notes, “As the title suggests, we want to talk about what leadership looks like in 2024 and what strategies the labels are taking. There are a lot of different things happening with A&R and finding/ developing talent. It’s a different ballgame than it was a few years ago with TikTok and other forms of exposure.” Inspired by a conversation he had with Goodman, Curtis says the session will also focus on how to take advantage of the format’s current momentum, optimize it, and take country to even bigger heights than it enjoyed in 2023.

Page 6

Other CRS 2024 highlights: • The “CRS Artist Interview,” which will find Trisha Yearwood in a question-and-answer session with Broken Bow’s Lainey Wilson. This will be the first time the session features one artist interviewing another. “When you get two artists talking, peer-to-peer, it’s a real discussion – less interview and more of a conversation,” Curtis says. And no hints, but he says several other high-profile artists are in discussions about appearing during CRS as well. • Capitol’s Keith Urban is performing during “Bob Kingsley’s Acoustic Alley.” Hosted by Fitz from Country Top 40, the show will feature two writers’ rounds. • This year’s Country Radio Hall of Fame inductees will be revealed, as will the winners of the 2024 CRS/Country Aircheck Awards. • The closing night “New Faces Of Country Music” show features Records Nashville’s George Birge, Riser House’s Dillon Carmichael, RCA’s Corey Kent, Columbia’s Moroney and Valory’s Conner Smith. • Two morning mentoring breakfasts, including the Y’all Means All: Diversity Matters Breakfast, featuring consultant Jaye Albright, BMG’s Loba and artists Frank Ray (Stoney Creek Records) and Lily Rose (Back Blocks/Republic/Big Loud). CMA’s Mia McNeal will moderate that breakfast, and also serve as a panelist on the other, the Women’s Networking Breakfast. That one will also feature UMGN’s Charlene Bryant, Moxie Coalition’s Zena Burns, Sevens Radio Network’s Blake Carter, Leo33’s Katie Dean, BMLG’s Brooke Diaz, Edison Research’s Karina Farias, Cumulus’ Krista Hayes, Triple Tigers’ Laura Hostelley, Silverfish Media’s Jessica “Carsen” Humphreville, Amazon Music’s Michelle Tigard Kammerer, WQMX/Akron’s Sarah Kay, Eighteen Company’s Basak Kizilisik, Monument’s Katie McCartney, WWJO/St. Cloud, MN’s Brooks O’Brian, BMLG’s Athena Puharic, WSIX/Nashville’s Brooke Taylor, WXBQ/ Bristol’s Nikki Thomas and WWKA/Orlando’s Melissa Quinones. As for the event’s top theme, “AI: Work Smarter, Not Harder” will be moderated by Cumulus’ Charlie Cook. The aim is to “teach people how to use AI to their advantage,” Hargis says, pointing to the tedious tasks that take time away from meatier projects. Another session, “Industry Growth: Unapologetically Unemployed,” will feature panelists who have segued from radio to other parts of the industry. New offering “Workshop Alley” will be a more hands-on session designed to teach attendees skills they can take back to their stations and utilize immediately – such as imaging tips and tricks, how to edit videos for social media posts and how to launch a podcast or broaden the reach of one. Expanding on one of the themes of the label head panel, Curtis hopes an underlying theme for the entire seminar this year is “not just celebrating the year that we’ve had, but figuring out what we can learn from it. I don’t think CRS should be a campfire, a ‘Kumbaya,’ ‘Gee, aren’t we doing great’ moment. It’s ‘Maybe we’re doing great, but how do we do better? How do we take the moment and make it bigger, while also challenging ourselves with some of the tough questions?’ CRS continues to be the best place to have these conversations.” Find CRS registration info here. –Phyllis Stark

NEW COUNTRY AIRCHECK/MEDIABASE REPORTER WEIGHTS These are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country

A station’s weight is determined by dividing that adjusted AQH by the leading

Reporters for both the Published and the Activator panels, based on audience

Country station’s adjusted AQH. For this period, that station is WUSN/

figures from Nielsen. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month

Chicago with an adjusted AQH of 15,830. For Activator weights, that station is

average of July-Aug.-Sept. 2023 AQH Persons. The Summer 2023 AQH Persons

WACO/Waco, TX with an adjusted AQH of 7,300. Station Weight = (Market

figure is used for diary markets. The weights are calculated using this formula:

rank X 10) divided by 16930 (7970 for Activator stations). These new weights

Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons.

are effective with this week’s Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country chart.
