Fifty Years Of Chart Hits
The Country Aircheck/Mediabase Top 50 chart traces its roots to Radio & Records’ “Country & Western Top 20,” which launched 50 years ago last month (10/5/73). Next month, Country Aircheck will include the Top 100 songs from that five-decade span in the year-end print issue, which will also crown 2023’s top songs, artists and the airplay label of the year. As a preview, the Top 25 can be found on page 5. Retro Specs: In 1973, that first R&R chart only listed 20 titles and was compiled from the ranked playlists of 27 reporting stations, including five whose FM successors are still reporters: KSONAM/San Diego; KTUF-AM/Phoenix (now Tim McGraw KNIX); KUZZ-AM/Bakersfield; KWJJ-AM/ Portland, OR and WUBE-AM/Cincinnati. The first No. 1 was “You’re The Best Thing” by Ray Price. Since then, 1,727 songs have followed in the top spot. The chart expanded to 40 titles by the end of 1974, and then to 50 in 1980. The number of reporting stations first reached the 100 mark in 1977, and 150 for the first time in 1983. In 1984, the Toby Keith numbered station playlists used to compile the chart were replaced by a three-category system, with stations reporting songs in Lonestar heavy, medium or light rotations. It Kenny Chesney was during this era that the reporting panel reached its peak. Billboard moved to monitored airplay with BDS in 1990, dropping stations in then-unmonitored markets, all of which R&R picked up. The result was a panel of 231 reporters by the end of 1993. The category reporting system was replaced by stations reporting their projected spins in 1994, foreshadowing the (continued on page 5)

Family Tradition: Sally & Jim Allgeier
Our series spotlighting family members working in the country music industry continues with Red Street Records Dir./Country Field Promotion Sally Allgeier and her father, Leighton Broadcasting/St. Cloud GM Jim Allgeier. JA: I’ve been in radio since ’99, and in the billboard business for about 15 years before that. SA: I actually went to college to be a teacher. When I graduated, I was a teacher for, like, six months and absolutely hated it. So I needed a job. I’d had an internship at my dad’s radio stations [Federated Media/Fort Wayne]. He needed a receptionist and I said I’d do it for a few months while he looked for someone. Then the Dir./Promotions Dir. gig came available and, at that point, I kind of knew I wanted to get to Nashville in some capacity. So I went to my dad like, “I think I want to do this job.” JA: I said, “First of all, you’ve got to go apply for it with the OM, not me. And if he does give it to you,

you’ve gotta give me two years.” SA: When I was very young, my dad was on the Classic Rock and Active Rock side, and they had a Smooth Jazz station at the time. Nothing I listened to, but going to the office was the coolest thing. I would go to station events, but it wasn’t that interesting until he got to the Country side in 2012. That’s when I was like, “Oh, my dad has a cool job,” because I was drawn to country music. JA: When she was at school at Holy Cross in South Bend, Sam Hunt had a show there. She called me two days before the concert and asked for tickets. SA: For me and nine of my friends [laughs]. I became the coolest person ever. He was playing a little tiny club on the campus of Notre Dame. His tour bus was parked outside. And I’ll never forget my dad texted me and said, “Text this guy, he’ll meet you out front the tour bus.” This was the first time I got to go on a tour bus. SA: When I was at Federated, my dad got to be good friends with [then Big Machine Records rep and now Red Street GM] Alex Valentine. He would bring artists by and always include me. I never knew that job existed. I got to meet other reps, too, but really it was Alex who said, “Sally, if you want to do this, move to Nashville.” I was 24 and moving with no idea what I was actually going to do. It took me two months to get a job in the industry. But I hadn’t given my dad the two years he asked for. It was a year and six months. JA: I’m happy we’re getting the story out about how she promised me two years and didn’t hold up her word. [Laughs] SA: Come on, Dad! JA: A year-and-a-half was probably six months more than I would’ve gotten out of somebody else. We’ve always told our kids, “Do what you love.” So we let her go to Nashville by herself with no job. Luckily, she saved money and could have lasted a few more months, but it all worked out. That was almost seven years ago. She went through a lot – good, bad and indifferent – but she loves what she does, so that’s what it’s all about. SA: My dad never tried to change my mind on any plans I came to him with.

JA: All three of my children have the work ethic that they need to be successful. That’s what I think I’m the most proud of. I knew Sally would be successful, whatever she did. –Phyllis Stark

Q2
Congratulations to Dylan Scott, RJ Meacham, Mike Rogers and the Curb promotion team on landing “Can’t Have Mine (Find You A Girl)” at No. 1 this week. Scott’s fourth chart-topper reaches the summit 57 weeks after it first charted, making it the fourth-longest trek to the top in chart history. Songwriters are Josh Melton, Dallas Wilson, Dylan Scott Matt Alderman and Scott. Kudos to Lee Adams, and the Broken Bow crew on scoring 62 adds for “Let Your Boys Be Country” by Jason Aldean. This is Aldean’s 22nd release to top the CA/MB Add Board and comes 18 years and one week after “Why” became his first Add Board leader. Additionally, WCOW/LaCrosse, WI and KZPK/St. Cloud, MN have been temporarily removed from this week’s Activator Chart due to technical issues while KSNI/Santa Maria, CA and WIBW/Topeka, KS remain off the Activator panel due to ongoing technical issues.

(continued from page 1) eventual use of monitored spins. That move occurred in June 1999, with data provided by Mediabase, eliminating the need for stations to call or fax in their spins. In 2006, Radio & Records was sold to VNU Media, which at the time also owned Billboard and its airplay monitoring system, Broadcast Data Systems. With the sale, Radio & Records’ charts shifted to BDS data and looked to leave the Mediabase charts without a home. Enter Country Aircheck, which launched Aug. 21, 2006, and has produced its weekly Top 50 using Mediabase data ever since. Of the 1,727 songs that have reached the top of the charts, only four have spent more than six weeks at the top: Keith Urban’s “Somebody Like You” and Alan Jackson & Jimmy Buffett’s “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” each spent seven weeks at No. 1, Lonestar’s “Amazed” spent nine weeks at the top, and “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw led the chart for 10. Notably, all four topped the chart between 1999 and 2004, following the charts’ move to monitored airplay. Conversely, from 1990 to 1996, a period which produced a boom of both long-lasting songs and artists, no song spent more than three weeks at No. 1. Methodology: To determine the Top 100 and account for drastically different methodologies over the years, songs were ranked by inverse points for every week within the top 15 (i.e. 15 points for a week at No. 1, 14 points for No. 2, etc.). Points for all songs that peaked prior to the monitored era, when chart runs were typically much shorter, were adjusted proportionally so the average points of all reporting-era songs equaled that of all monitored-era songs. Finally, bonus points were given to the top 10 songs from each of the five 10-year spans covered by the charts. Creating a ranking that accounts for multiple chart methodologies across 50 years is admittedly difficult, if not impossible to perfectly balance. As noted above, the ‘90s boom – arguably the most pivotal time in the format’s history – is underrepresented for a number of reasons, the least of which is methodology. For starters, the industry operated quite differently in that span – songs moved up and off the chart in a span of weeks, not months. Also of note for all eras, this list is a reflection solely of current airplay in the moment. Recurrent and gold airplay – the test of time, if you will – is an altogether different measure, one that may actually be impossible to

quantify as far back as 50 years ago. Nevertheless, the final Top 100 offers some discussion-worthy insights. It should be no surprise that the 10-week No. 1 “Live Like You Were Dying” leads the list – one of six inclusions for McGraw. Rascal Flatts also landed six on the Top 100, but they are both eclipsed by Toby Keith’s eight songs.
