Separation Anxiety: New Airplay Rules?
For the first time in modern chart history, two solo singles from one artist are climbing in the top 15. Another artist has the top two Country Aircheck/ Mediabase Add Board spots this week – also an historical first. Added to the years-long proliferation of collaborations, these developments challenge the format’s traditional views on artist separation ... and have implications for other artists, as well.
Of course, the music in question is Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing At A Time” (No. 12) and “Last Night” (No. 14), and Luke Combs’ “Love You Anyway” (58 adds) and “5 Leaf Clover” (17 adds). On the collaboration front, Lainey Wilson recently had a solo single and featured appearance with Hardy in the top five simultaneously. Last fall, Mitchell Tenpenny had No. 1s separated by three weeks – the first being a collaboration with Chris Young
“We one-thousand-percent have new rules,” says Albright & O’Malley & Brenner VP/Consulting Partner Kenny Jay. “When format superstars have music commanding a level of streaming above music at the bottom of the [airplay] chart, we owe it to listeners to expose more of that music and be fans right along with them.”
Cumulus VP/Country Charlie Cook agrees, noting, “Separation on Morgan Wallen has dropped to 18-20 minutes in some situations, but he and Luke Combs are the only two who have fallen back that far. Some programmers tried to do a 35-minute separation between [Wilson’s] two truck songs, but it’s just them right now.

Tour Launch: Morgan Wallen
Big Loud’s Morgan Wallen launched his One Night At A Time World Tour with back-to-back shows at American Family Field in Milwaukee April 14-15. Midwest WNCY/ Appleton-Green Bay, WI MD/morning co-host Charli McKenzie and iHeartMedia WMIL/ Milwaukee PD/APD/MD/afternoon personality Shanna “Quinn” Cudeck were among the radio personnel on-hand for night one of the run. They tell Country Aircheck what to expect when Wallen rolls through a town near you.

“It was a party!” says Cudeck. “Even if you didn’t know any of the artists’ music, you were going to have a good time.” McKenzie adds, “I haven’t seen people fill up in their seats that early in a long time, and [opening act] Bailey [Zimmerman] had a lot to do with that.” Both tout the quality of performances from all of the openers – Zimmerman, Ernest and Hardy –the latter two of whom returned to the stage to perform “Flower Shops” and “He Went To Jared,” respectively, with Wallen later in the show.
The stadium-sized stage featured a large walk-out with custom LED video thrust and motion tracking video, and Wallen entered by rising through the middle of the stage at approximately 9pm CT. “Flames and pyrotechnics were awesome; the pit felt it on their faces,” says McKenzie. Cudeck agrees, noting, “There’s a lot of fire from all different directions.” While there were no “B” stages or massive set changes, each artist did don a Milwaukee Brewers jersey at some point during their set, adding to the crowd energy each time.
Cudeck and McKenzie say it was difficult to pinpoint the loudest moment or largest crowd reaction. “But, I think ‘Last Night’ got the crowd going the most,” says Cudeck. McKenzie counters, “The biggest moment was when Morgan did his version of ‘Cover Me Up.’ The crowd was in awe and singing every single note.” But, she adds, “They basically sang every note to every song.” The 26-song set included all of Wallen’s radio hits as well as selections from his recently released One Thing At A Time. The show unofficially closed with Wallen’s debut radio offering, “The Way I Talk,” before he returned for a three-song encore of “Heartless,” “Last Night” and “Whiskey Glasses.”
“Morgan is an unbelievable performer who has kept country music country,” says McKenzie. Cudeck concurs, concluding, “If I could describe this tour in one word, it would be ‘energy.’ My body is still aching from all the bad dancing I did! Just a fantastic time from start to finish, and one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.” Reach McKenzie here and Cudeck here; complete list of upcoming One Night At A Time World Tour dates here

Congratulations to Bailey Zimmerman, Kristen Williams, Anna Cage, Tom Martens, Stephanie Hagerty and the Warner/WEA promotion team on holding “Rock And A Hard Place” at No. 1 for a second week. At 23 years and 2 months, Zimmerman becomes the second youngest solo male to ever score a multi-week No. 1; Hunter Hayes was 21 when “Wanted” spent two weeks at the top in 2012. Songwriters are Heath Warren, Jacob Hackworth and Jet Harvey

Audacy’s pending sale of WLFP/Memphis to Educational Media Foundation (EMF) (CAT 4/7) precipitated last week’s news that “The Wolf” format and brand of WLFP will be transferred to what is now Hot AC WMC. Along with moving from 94.1 to 99.7, current WMC morning co-host Erin Austin (who previously handled middays on sister KILT/Houston) will move to middays. The move will also mark a significant boost in coverage for Memphis’ Wolf, which will jump from its present 50,000 watts on 94.1 to 300,000 watts on 99.7, which was grandfathered at that level when the current limit of 100,000 watts was put in place in 1962. (See coverage map, next column.) In February 6+ PPMs, WMC ranked sixth with a 6.0 share, and WLFP was 13th with a 2.9. In the Persons 25-54 demo, WMC ranked fifth, and WLFP was tied for 10th.
Kudos to Lauren “LT” Thomas and the Columbia crew on racking up 58 adds for Luke Combs’ “Love You Anyway.” This is Combs’ 13th release to top the CA/MB Add Board. However, what is most noteworthy is Combs also has the second most-added song this week with “5 Leaf Clover,” making this the first time one artist has simultaneously had both the first and second most added records.

OFF THE RECORD
Monument’s Caitlyn Smith goes Off (The Record):
I did my last UK tour solo. I loved it so much, I wanted to bring similar intimacy to the U.S. During the pandemic, I started to support the National Independent Venue Association with my single “I Can’t.” Losing venues I grew up seeing live music in was not something I could stand by and watch.
Through that, I learned a lot about how these venues operate and how important they are to their communities. I deeply relate to the small business mindset, as that’s what I’m building for myself. I want to truly experience the music scene in each market I visit, and these venues are the best way to do that.

High & Low is about all aspects of my life – I take a journey through every emotion. It kicks off with the highest of Highs and dives into the lowest of Lows. It’s about real life … and how we can’t have one without the other. I take people through joy and sorrow, through pain and triumph. My hope is that this record gives the listener a space to hold these feelings and feel seen – in the high and the low.
With this being my first time in the producer’s chair, I experienced a lot of growth. When I walked into the first session, I was so nervous and a little intimidated, but by the last song, I was confident enough that I actually cut the whole thing by myself, playing all the instruments, producing, engineering and recording it in my home studio.
“High” is a special song, of course, because Miley Cyrus cut it for her record, but also because it kicked off the journey of this project. I love Miley’s version, but I knew I needed my own version on this record.
“Lately” is one of my favorites. Everything listed in the verses is what I was actually doing to distract myself from what I was missing during 2020. “Alaska” was very hard to write, but one I’m very proud of. It’s raw and real, and I was honored to work with co-writer Ben West.
“Maybe In Another Life” was a heartbreaker to write and is a heartbreaker to sing. The record has a one-take tracking vocal that was so in-the-moment we had to keep it.
“The Great Pretender” is probably the most personal song on the record. Since I wrote it after the project was finished, I had to cut it in just a few days by myself to make the master deadline. It was the perfect way to complete the record and summarize this transformative season I’ve walked through.

Separation Anxiety: New Airplay Rules?
(continued from page 1)
And if another artist reaches that level, the template’s been built.”
“It reminds me of when Garth was as hot as Morgan is now,” says Audacy VP/Country Format Tim Roberts. “Whether it’s hand-editing the playlist or putting a new rule in your scheduling system, you’re breaking rules, because artists are setting records and doing things we haven’t seen. We’re finally coming to a place where instead of labels deciding what the single is, we’re realizing it’s better to let the fans do it.”
Big Loud SVP/Promotion Stacy Blythe won’t argue with that. “[Working two singles] definitely wasn’t the initial thought,” she admits. “As ‘Thought You Should Know’ was peaking, ‘One Thing At A Time’ was raising its hand as the next single. Some stations were already playing it, and it was the one Morgan wanted. Then, ‘Last Night’ started exploding in consumption. Republic wanted to run with it at Top 40, and [Country] programmers were calling to say, ‘We can’t let other formats own this song.’ A couple stations took it upon themselves to add both. ‘Last Night’ was actually out-streaming ‘One Thing At A Time,’ so we followed suit and chased it. I’d love to say it was our genius idea, but we were just following the fans.”

Fans may be more accustomed to binge listening than in past eras. “When the consumer listens anywhere but radio, they’re hearing artists’ songs back-to-back,” says Sony EVP/Promotion & Artist Development Steve Hodges. “The old days of wide separation – hours, in some cases – had to change as TSL has fallen.”
Having seen listener behavior shifts from different industry vantage points, Jay agrees. “I watched this happen on the label side and was frustrated radio didn’t grasp the opportunity to play superstar acts whose songs clearly had the metrics to be contenders at a more rapid pace. With TSL dropping to the levels it is, we can expose hit songs and top artists more frequently.”
Unlimited streaming bandwidth doesn’t apply at radio, however. More singles for some artists means fewer for others. “If you’re not a top tier artist, your music has to be great,” Jay says. “There’s not as much room for error in what you bring to radio as there was 10 years ago or even three years ago.”
Hodges concurs, adding, “There are so many analytics, you kind of know how fans have reacted. If they don’t react to the music, you can’t expect a great showing at radio. I’d rather have a conversation with the artist to cut bait so we can get to a song that is a hit.”
While Blythe notes the difficulty for “those artists

who are slower to consume but quicker to research,” she adds, “The real difference is at the top of the chart. The ability to be forced to [No. 1] is more difficult. Other records are going to have to be organically as strong ... or stronger.”
“You still have to balance streaming hits with the superstars who don’t necessarily stream at those levels,” Jay admits. “As long as there is a 40-plus crowd that’s not into streaming at the level of younger demos, we can still have those turntable hits for a traditional radio audience.”
Another potential drawback is also worth considering. “Outside of too many commercials, Country radio P1s’ next complaint is playing the same songs over and over,” Jay says. “The exposure for artists to have multiple singles is great for the format, but it has to be carefully balanced not to upset station TSL. Creating great musical quarter hours with entertaining talent adds to the critical P1 want of ‘makes me feel good when I listen.’”
Sea change or circumstantial – “We’re just in a season where two superstars released big projects close to each other,” Blythe suggests – it’s a (mostly) good problem to have. “I’m not sure the format has been this healthy with songs and artists in a long time, and PDs are recognizing it,” Hodges says. “When was the last time we saw so many songs crossing over from Country to other formats? The audience is hungry for it – we should feed them.” –

Brantley Gilbert So Help Me God (Deluxe Edition) (Valory)
Gilbert co-penned all 15 tracks on the project, including current single “Heaven By Then” w/Blake Shelton f/Vince Gill. Building upon the 10 songs released last year, the deluxe edition also features new tracks like “Behind The Times” and “Wrote The Book Around Here.”
Tenille Townes Train Track Worktapes (Columbia/RCA)
Conceptualized, written and recorded on a charity train trip that covered nearly 3,000 miles, Townes produced the five-song collection alongside guitarist Jaxon Hargrove. The band got resourceful with their setup, turning a suitcase into a kick drum and using teacups for a triangle.
Morgan Evans Life Upside Down EP (Warner/WEA)
Following “Over For You,” Evans wrote his latest single, “On My Own Again,” with Zach Kale and Geoff Warburton. “I called the EP Life Upside Down because this collection of music could only have come from this time, when my life felt exactly that,” he shared. “To me, these five tracks journey through unexpected heartbreak, self-rediscovery, new beginnings and a new found gratitude for the present moment.”
Introducing Lauren Watkins (Big Loud/Songs & Daughters)
The self-penned, seven-song preview set was produced by Joey Moi and features first releases “Shirley Temple” and “Camel Blues.”
