Inside Garth’s Oyster
When Garth Brooks decided to staff Pearl Records with a promotion team (CAT 8/9), he and Mandy McCormack – then VP/Radio Promotion & Marketing Strategy for Brooks and Trisha Yearwood – quickly turned to former Arista VP/Promotion Lesly Simon as GM (Breaking News 9/19). Rounding out the team are Nathan Cruise, Hilary Hoover and Glenn Noblit (CAT 9/29), with McCormack rising to SVP/Radio Promotion, Marketing & Artist Strategy. Country Aircheck caught up with McCormack and Simon to find out more. CA: Why staff Pearl now, instead of partnering with an established label? MM: Over the past several months Garth and I have had many conversations on what this next chapter could look like for both him and Trisha. Their very own radio promotion department was the perfect next piece to add to an already amazing team. LS: He hasn’t had his very own radio Lesly Simon team before, [but] has been a part of a major label and had partnerships with other labels. Mandy McCormack The timing is perfect – he just became the No. 1 selling artist of all time with a seventh Diamond award. What is the label vision even beyond promotion? LS: Our goal is to take Garth and Trisha to new heights in their careers. We are continuing to connect their music to fans and grow their brands across a variety of platforms. Having their own promotion team is an important piece of that story. And having a company with limitless opportunity allows us to grow their business, their brands and Pearl in countless ways. WUSN/Chicago Evolves
Chicago’s two-way Country battle has tightened to a neck-and-neck contest according to the latest Nielsen PPM survey. September saw CBS Radio’s WUSN post a 2.8 (12) Persons 6+ as iHeartMedia’s 21-month-old WEBG pulled within a 10th of a point at 2.7 (13). WEBG has proved to be a particularly formidable opponent in recent months (see page ?), which has arguably motivated WUSN’s recent brand refreshment (CAT 8/8). August saw the departure of longtime morning host and 2016 Country Radio Hall Of Famer Lisa Dent, along with partner Ramblin’ Ray Stevens and their producer (CAT Jeff Kapugi 8/3). A new morning show from cross-hall

Page 3 Top 40 sister WBBM took their place (CAT 8/11), as the station brought in a new night host, logo and positioning statement. Country Aircheck discussedWUSN the changes with CBS WEBG Radio VP/ Country and WUSN PD Jeff Kapugi. The reason behind the freshening is simple, Kapugi says. “Staying relevant with the target audience,” he explains, noting a renewed emphasis on localism. “We’ve been Chicago’s Country 8 logo is a reflection of station for more than 34 years and our new Chicago with the six-point star from the Chicago flag (right/left).” Having native or near-native talent in the market has long been important to Kapugi, which is one of7the reasons WBBM afternooners Dougie Stylz and Justin Roman were an attractive choice for mornings. “We didn’t target a Top 40 show per se,” 6 Kapugi contends. “We were looking for the best show for the station.” 4.0 Stylz & Roman fit the bill in 5 part because they liked each other. As Kapugi notes, “You can’t buy chemistry.” There’s also a 4 2.8 2.8 2.8 level of familiarity since they were heard for more than a decade on WBBM, a station WUSN shares 3 considerable audience with. “US99 has traditionally shared with the Top 40 and Adult Top 40 stations 2 2.4 in Chicago,” Kapugi grants. “The format in general is more pop than 2.0 2.0 it has been in years past, so it’s very 1 natural to share with these stations.” Finally, it doesn’t hurt that they’re big country fans and are proprietors of a 0 country bar in the city. Sep '14 Sep Oct Nov
Interestingly, they weren’t on the initial short list of candidates. “They didn’t immediately come to mind,” Kapugi explains. “But when another programmer mentioned them, VP/ProgrammingChicago Todd Cavanah and I looked at each other and said, ‘Duh! Why didn’t we think of that?’” There have been other on-air changes as well. Mike Kasper, who has family ties in the area, joined in afternoons following Shila Nathan’s departure for Cumulus’ WNSH/New York in April (CAT 4/7/16). And Kimmie Caruba, a Chicago native who’d been handling nights at sister KMLE/Phoenix, came aboard in August (CAT 8/15). WUSN middayer Drew Walker has been with the station for 12 years, and with a recent contract extension will stay put for some time to come.

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Valory's Levi Hummon discusses his most influential music: 1. Dixie Chicks in Houston: This was right after my dad [Marcus Hummon] had written "Cowboy Take Me Away" and "Ready To Run." The energy in that stadium was beyond anything I thought possible. As performers, they had those Levi Hummon three qualities of being entertainers, having great songs and being passionate – that's what I remember from that concert. 2. Cat Stevens, Greatest Hits: When I was young, my dad would always play his record. They were epic songs, almost like lullabyes and hymns. They're so catch and so timeless. I dream of having a song like that one day. 3. Jeff Buckley: He was the first artist I listened to that made me say, "I need to go write a song – right now." 4. Marcus Hummon, All In Good Time: The reason it was so impactful to me was I heard all these melodies and lyrics being created. I knew every song on the album. I heard "Bless The Broken Road" before it was cut. Seeing it become a Grammy-winning song helped me realize, you can be successful as a writer and artist in this town. 5. "Bless The Broken Road": Every time my dad was nominated for a Grammy, my mom would go with him out to L.A. – and he would lose and then be depressed the whole trip. So my mom said she was not going to another Grammy ceremony with him (laughs). The year he was nominated for this song, I went. When he won Country Song, I remember him standing up and screaming. When I was a kid I took it for granted. But now I think, how awesome that I got to see that happen. • Highly regarded music you've actually never heard: I haven't listened to as much of Hank Williams' songs as I should have. And I need to listen to more of the Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard generation, too. • "Important" music you just don't get: The really hardcore rock stuff is not my cup of tea. • An album you listened to incessantly: Jack Garratt's Phase. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Jack Garratt's "Surprise Yourself." • Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: I like '90s rock a little too much – Weezer, Incubus.
UPDATE
Page 6
WUSN’s music was freshened up, too. A seven-day Mediabase analysis shows a product that’s 54% current, 37% recurrent and 9% gold. WEBG, meanwhile, comes in at 56/27/17%. Heavy currents on WUSN are spinning 15-20 times more than those on WEBG, and the average song vintage on both stations is 2014. The stations are airing about the same number of songs weekly, though that wasn’t always the case. Kapugi didn’t expand, but he did acknowledge some “tweaking” to his station’s spot load. “We’re currently in line with other stations in the Chicago market,” he says. The station’s new positioner seems to summarize it all. “’Chicago’s hottest Country’ is a marriage of hit country and new country, which makes up the majority of what we play on US99,” Kapugi says. How long had all this been in the works? “It’s something we have been talking about for quite some time,” Kapugi says. “We made some moves that were not as obvious along the way, but when you refresh a heritage brand and make talent changes they tend to get noticed.” There’s clearly an appeal being made to younger demos and Kapugi says there’s an upside. Despite recent numbers that suggest weakening in Country among 18-34s, he says Country in Chicago looks very strong in the demo. “Radio in general needs to target the 18-34 to 18-49 demos,” Kapugi argues. “We need to engage that part of our audience not only on air, but on site, and online through all the channels we have to promote our brands.” As for other possible changes, Kapugi admits anything is possible. “The only constant in life is change, right?” Reach him here. –Russ Penuell

Kudos as well to Josh Easler and the Arista team on notching 66 adds for Brad Paisley’s “Today,” topping this week’s board. Finally, be advised that airplay was affected this week by stations going all-news as Hurricane Matthew affected coastal areas. Correspondingly, spin and point totals likely reflect those programming shifts.

What about other label functions? Distribution? Marketing? Digital? LS: Garth has had his team in place to handle other traditional “label” functions for quite some time. We work with Garth and those individuals daily to market, distribute, promote and sell his music, as well as to plan and execute growth for his brand and business. Lesly, why was this the right opportunity for you? LS: I have always been a huge fan of both Garth and Trisha. I

met with Mandy, Bob [manager Bob Doyle] and Randy [manager and GhostTunes CEO Randy Bernard]. Their excitement for the music and Garth coupled with their vision and plans for him, Trisha and Pearl, were all exactly what I was looking for in my next chapter. Then I sat down with Garth. He blew me away. The music is incredible and he is truly one of the most real, genuine and incredibly talented human beings I have ever met. It was really the opportunity of a lifetime. What is the division of responsibilities between you? LS: We have a great collaborative nature as well as [individual] strengths. Mandy knows every aspect of the tour and how that runs seamlessly with fans and radio. She is incredibly creative and knows how to manage and execute everything from events to radio set up and the [SiriusXM] Garth Channel. She’s been involved in so many aspects of the music and upcoming launch plans, and intuitively knows what works in this world. She will oversee the day-to-day of our promotion team, the radio and tour partnerships as well as continue as Executive Producer of the Garth Channel. I will work side by side with her on overall strategy and synergy among radio, the rest of the team and our partners. The great thing about a small organization is we are all hands on deck. We organically know what the group needs to reach our goals for Garth and Trisha, and everyone is working together. It truly feels like we have been on a team together for years. What were you looking for in a promotion staff, and what makes Nathan, Glenn and Hilary the right choices? MM: Passion. Love and respect for the music and for these artists. People who are highly respected in our industry. And at the end of the day, using all of that to deliver all they can for Garth and Trisha. Nathan, Glenn and Hilary have already started to deliver. LS: We were looking for passion, relationships, experience, professionalism, integrity and drive. We wanted a group of people who love these artists, the music and the business and would inspire each other daily. This is a family, [which is] the tone set by Garth and Trisha. Will they have specific regions? MM: There are no fences. [laughs] LS: That’s what’s really cool. We wanted to focus on relationships, and it doesn’t have to be geographical. Now, because they have been regionals before, they kind of have geographical areas of expertise, but [have also worked] in multiple regions. It’s a great opportunity for them to build their brands and get new relationships started. And that will help the team. What are the project plans you can share? LS: We have some incredible excitement around [Brooks’

seventh Diamond award], his partnership with Tennessee Tourism and the fan celebration at Ascend Amphitheater Oct. 24. He will be the first artist ever to partner with Frito in a massive campaign that includes a free download as we launch his new single Oct. 13, among a few other partnerships to be announced. The box set will be in Target stores Nov. 11 as part of their huge partnership. And he and Trisha have their first duets album coming this holiday season. Is there a plan to bring other artists on board? LS: Not at this point. But the opportunities we have to build this company are whatever we want them to be. So right now, in the course of the next year we have a very clear and specific plan and goals. But as the industry continues to grow and change, the business will, too. Mandy, you also happen to be programming a radio station with Garth on SiriusXM. What is that process? MM: It’s just beginning. The goal is to create the absolute very best experience a Garth fan and the music fan can have while tuning in. This channel is Garth’s vision, my vision, SiriusXM’s vision. And, if we succeed, the listeners’ vision. Label and radio at the same time? How do you do it all? MM: One of my favorite quotes is from The Rookie, and Dennis Quaid’s character says “Hey Brooks, we get to play baseball today.” I get to play baseball every day. I might get emotional, but this is truly my dream. So sleep? I’ll sleep later. This is fun. This is what I came to this town to do. I will say that with Lesly now, and the team, I’m like [sigh], and I’m so excited about that. She’s definitely stepped right in and I’m learning so much from her already.
