Recap: I’m In The Hall, Bitches!

“The music business comes from radio, and don’t ever forget how important you on-air radio personalities are,” emphasized Artist Achievement Award honoree Barbara Mandrell during last week’s (7/10) Country Radio Hall Of Fame Induction And Dinner in Nashville. “This means so much to me because I hold you at the top of the mountain in such high esteem.” Mandrell and President’s Award recipients Scott and Julie De Vos were celebrated alongside inductees

“Dollar Bill” Lawson, Pam Green, the late Wade Jessen, Charlie Morgan, John

Willyard and Trish Biondo

Surprise guest Garth Brooks described the collected honorees and attendees as having “more knowledge about country music than if you put anybody together in any room.”

Willyard and Green’s inductions marked the first time a voiceover talent and off-air MD, respectively, were taught the mysterious secret handshake discussed by members in a video package. Of the former, WXBQ/Johnson City, TN PD Nikki Thomas said, “He’s not just a voiceover guy, he takes words and brings life to them. He’s a part of your radio station, a part of your team, the 12th man.” Similarly, CRHoFamer Ed Salamon stressed the importance of music directors like Green to the success of a station. “We’ve all heard the saying, ‘Find a job you enjoy doing, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life,’” said Green. “I found mine and it’s been the ride of a lifetime.”

Called “the greatest storyteller of all time” by Summit’s Tom Hanrahan, Lawson proved the point with speech that never once matched what was scrolling on the teleprompter. At times sentimental — his dad finally telling him he wasn’t a disappointment for choosing radio over dentistry – and at others hilarious — being knocked out twice while on the air — the candor and magnetism that led Lawson to the HoF was on full display … much like his whole ass was when paramedics found him (for the second time) unconscious after 45 minutes of dead air.

Remembering Jerry Bradley

One of three family members in the Country Music Hall of Fame, Jerry Bradley was a singular force in championing the genre and having a good time doing it. Colleagues and friends share their tales below.

Fellow Hall of Famer Joe Galante: He was quite the prankster. I’d be driving – him in the passenger seat – on Interstate 65 coming up from Cool Springs and, in that winding part of the highway, he’d reach up and put his foot on the steering wheel. He’d lean back and I’m shitting my pants trying to steer the car

He drove a big, silver Cadillac El Dorado and there were times you’d see him driving where he’d lay down. You couldn’t figure out where he was.

Jerry Bradley

Somehow he’d use a mirror or knew the road well enough to keep going. I couldn’t have been at RCA more than six months when he asked me to lunch at 11am. We drove 45 minutes to a place called Brantley’s for fried catfish. We were there an hour-and-a-half and then drove 45 minutes back. Didn’t have a missed call the whole time. That was the ‘70s. It was a very loose business structured around A&R and promotion. We didn’t have 25 meetings and calls in a day. Chet Atkins, Waylon Jennings, Floyd Cramer and others would hang around the RCA break room drinking coffee. Jerry loved all that.

Producer and publisher Tom Collins: RCA/Nashville was tearing it up. Waylon, Dolly, Charley Pride and Milsap were hot, but the L.A. and New York pop divisions were only so-so. The rumor was RCA was going to be sold, and Jerry detested it. One night I got 10 outstanding young songwriters to unload two tons of horse manure in front of the RCA building and put a “For Sale” sign on it. Jerry and [wife] Connie happened to be out late that night and saw what we’d done. I was in the studio mixing a Steve Wariner session when the police showed up to arrest me for defaming property. They were driving me downtown when they started laughing – Jerry had put them up to it. They took me back to the studio, but I told everyone we were done for the night.

The next day, I got a call at 8am. “You better get down to the office.” Jerry and some guys from the halfway house next to my office had loaded the two tons of manure into my yard, and brought along a camera crew from one of the local TV stations. You couldn’t get away with pulling a trick on Jerry – he’d get you back, and you expected him to.

Publisher Troy Tomlinson: Jerry was arguing with a high ranking person in the industry who was being very amenable, but when Jerry convinced himself someone was doing him wrong he tended to come out of the chute like a bull. I’m just an innocent observer but after 20 minutes in this meeting I was getting really uncomfortable. Just as it was ending, the fella said, “I hope there are no hard feelings.” Jerry replied, “I don’t think any less of you today than I did yesterday.” As Jerry and I were walking down the stairs after, he says to me out of the corner of his mouth – which is how he liked to talk – “Did I say the right thing?” I replied, “Jerry, you said exactly what you meant.”

Workin’ 9 To Five: Bradley with Dolly Parton, Joe Galante and Chet Atkins.

He quickly got crossways with a boss he had for a short time at AcuffRose because he didn’t think the new guy had the company’s best interest at heart. Again, I’m in a meeting feeling terrible because they’re tearing into each other. The new boss said, “Jerry, your problem is you’ve never before had a boss who understands your business.” Jerry stood up, put both hands on the guy’s desk, leaned over and said, “And I ain’t so damn sure I’ve got one now!”

After Bud Wendell left Gaylord, they brought 50 executives into a room with the new chairman so he could tell us his plan for growing the company. He wanted every entity to have a “wow” about it. If you left the hotel and were asked about the experience, they wanted you saying, “Wow!” Same with the Opry. The chairman says, “Jerry, how could you create a ‘wow’ experience out of Acuff-Rose?” With his chin in his hand and without taking a breath, Jerry said, “Well, I guess I could paint a ‘W’ on one ass cheek and a ‘W’ on the other ass cheek and bend over for you.”

And I’ll end with one sweet story. When [producer] Norro Wilson was in hospice, he chose a code word at the reception desk to let certain people in because too many were wanting to come visit. Jerry went by, said the code word and went in to see Norro, who didn’t have long. Jerry said to him, “Wouldn’t that code word be the name of the whorehouse you took me to in Scottsville, KY?” Norro never opened his eyes, but his whole face broke out

in a smile. Jerry told me that story 10 days ago. Old guys of his age don’t say a lot of sentimental shit, but him retelling that story as he was nearing the end says something.

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Luke Combs, Steve Hodges, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia promotion team on taking “Fast Car” to No. 1. Combs’ 16th chart topper is also the fastest-rising No. 1 since his “Even Though I’m Leaving,” which also took 11 weeks to reach the top in November 2019. “Fast Car” also sets a new highwater mark for the most spins in a single week in the Mediabase era, with 9,566. The song was written by Tracy Chapman, who originally recorded the song and took it to No. 8 on the R&R Pop chart in 1988.

Kudos to Michael Chase and the Warner/WAR crew on scoring 134 adds for Dan + Shay’s “Save Me The Trouble.” This is the duo’s 10th Add Board leader, their largest ever, and the largest for any song since Luke Combs’ “The Kind Of Love We Make” collected 135 in June 2022.

Recap: I’m In The Hall, Bitches!

(continued from page 1)

In closing, Lawson exclaimed, “I’m in the Hall of Fame, bitches!” De Lux Productions’ Scott and Julie De Vos have worked with CRS for more than 25 years, but never onstage. “We’re normally in the back handing the plaque, album, award to the presenter, pushing them gently through the curtain and whispering in their ear, ‘Please keep it short and stay on schedule,’” joked Scott. “Now we know the pressure of receiving that advice.” Of the duo’s legacy, CRB Pres. Kurt Johnson shared his hope that it inspires future generations of producers and industry professionals to “strive for greatness and to always put the music and the artists first.”

“We are never truly certain of what our legacy will be, but tonight we get to know another part of Wade’s,” said the late Jessen’s partner, Corey Jones. Joined by Jessen’s niece, Courtney, nephew, Meagher, and sisters, Jesse and Beckey, Jones thanked the Hall of

Fame for ensuring Wade will “forever have a place in the history of Country radio.”

“Trish loves radio almost as much as she loves Donny Osmond,” laughed WUSN/ Chicago’s Marci Braun during her intro of her former colleague. When Biondo heard Mandrell would be honored on the same night as her induction, she knew exactly where she wanted to begin her speech. “I was country when country wasn’t cool,” she said, noting her first lesson in customer service was at a Mandrell concert. “What I remember most is she made you feel like you were her friend, and then after the show, Barbara changed into jeans, came out to the end of the stage, sat down and signed autographs for every person that wanted to meet her.”

In preparation of the evening, fellow Mandrell super fan and CMA CEO Sarah Trahern had a “Mandrell Music Marathon” in her office, which turned into an opportunity to share songs like “Sleeping Single In A Double Bed” and “Crackers” with younger staffers. “For any of us little girls who looked up to her, she taught us that hard work pays off,” said Trahern.

“She taught us that you can do more than one thing well – often in the same medley.” Trisha Yearwood, who performed “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right” and “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,” echoed Trahern. “Every female singer, every male singer, that came after you owes you a debt of gratitude.”

Trahern also gave a shout out to CMA Board Chair Charlie Morgan, a man Herb Allen noted was a “jack of all trades, master of none” at the bottom of his first application to WFMS. Quoting Kenny “The Jet” Smith, Morgan shared his belief that “anyone who thinks they are self-made, is just not very observant.” To prove that point, many of the people who did the “heavy lifting” in his life and career were sitting in the room “drinking bad wine” and hoping for a super short speech. He provided examples of his “Hall of Fame-worthy judge of character and talent,” like when he didn’t hire Bob Richards, told Lisa Wall “you aren’t as good as you think you are,” called Todd Schumacher “nothing special” and booked a private jet without corporate approval. “I use these stories both to illustrate how fully un-self-made I am and to apologize and thank these and countless others who have so generously shared their talents to do some really cool shit together,” he said.

“They say it is not the destination, it is the journey and this journey has been filled with so many incredible people and memories that I will treasure, and stories I will re-tell over and over and over.”
