CMA Awards: Radio Reacts
Last week’s 56th Annual CMA Awards (11/9) drew strong opinions from radio pros both in the house and in their houses.
•Cox/Houston Dir./Operations Travis Moon: “Peyton Manning is so freaking good at this, and he and Luke Bryan were great together. At times, the hosts kind of disappeared; I wanted more Peyton, please! This was a benchmark show, and when building future CMA Awards, I hope they remember this template. I wish I could have been there live. I absolutely geeked out on Patty Loveless performing! She is a legend and one of the greatest female artists of all time. That song and performance was show-stopping.”
•Music Choice Sr. Mgr./Programming Jim Murphy: “Why isn’t Patty Loveless on Country radio today? Can someone find her a song or collaboration, please? Thomas Rhett with Katy Perry was among my favorite performances. I did think the performance from the upcoming Rolling Stones tribute album fell flat. And, aside from the staging for ‘Wait In The Truck,’ I thought the sets and production were less inspired than previous, non-pandemic shows.”
•Hubbard WUBE/Cincinnati afternoon cohost Anna Marie: “I couldn’t wait for Miranda Lambert’s performance ... I love anything she does. I was singing along to ‘Geraldine’ and having a full-blown concert in my living room alone in my pajamas with lots of bourbon and snacks. If Jo Dee Messina hadn’t performed ‘Heads Carolina’ with Cole Swindell, I would’ve been disappointed; it turned out to be just as I had hoped!”
•Cumulus WFMS/Indianapolis MD/ afternoon host Matt Malone: “I had a (continued on page 1)

“Single of the Year is the one I wanted. That’s a team victory. That’s Warner Music Nashville pushing my first No. 1 doubleplatinum single, and it couldn’t have gone better. As far as Male Vocalist goes, when you’re in a category with Chris Stapleton, you kinda already know who’s going to win.” –Cody Johnson
“It’s no news to people that John and I have very different opinions than a lot of people in our format. But we’ve seen fans show up and people appreciate we are who we are. Particularly with me coming out, there are people that maybe don’t agree with it but

love to see me happy. To be celebrated tonight for being who we are is all the more proof that’s what our genre is about.” –Brothers Osborne’s TJ Osborne
“Did Jon Pardi just win?” –Old Dominion’s Matt Ramsey approaching the (overly tall) mic “This was a dream of my daddy’s when he was a little boy. He used to roll a picnic table out to the side of the highway, pretend he was Glen Campbell and play his guitar for cars passing by. This was a full-circle moment for me and my family ... This is the most I’ve seen him smile in months, since he got sick. This means the world to me, but having him here with me means just as much.” –Lainey Wilson
“’Buy Dirt’ was the catalyst to writing more songs [that inspired my] move to Nashville. Early on, it was what was catchy ... but ‘Buy Dirt’ made me realize I need to write from my heart ... This song has 100% helped me evolve into the artist that I want to become.”
Jordan Davis on the Song of the Year
“Duke Ellington was asked a question about jazz, and he got extremely offended and was like, ‘I don’t make jazz. I make music.’ We have an opportunity to show just how alike and relative everything is. It doesn’t get more soulful than Dolly Parton, Chris Stapleton, the late Kenny Rogers – and Lionel Richie proved that. Tanya and I are so honored to be able to be a part of those conversations and a part of that kind of history. The sound is just love.” –The War & Treaty’s Michael Trotter Jr.
“I had a rough night a few weeks ago, and I remember coming off stage, closing the greenroom for half an hour, sitting there by myself and taking a lot of stock of why I do what I do ... I moved here to love
what I do. And man, I have never loved it more than I do tonight –than I do every night when I step out on that stage … even when I have a rough night. I’m truly, truly blessed, and I have a great team and a great family to thank for that.” –Entertainer of the Year Luke Combs. –Caitlin DeForest

OFF THE RECORD
My mom always had the giant stereo turned up loud in the living room. She played everything from Ray Charles and Marty Robbins to the soundtrack of Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand. I knew every word. My brothers played guitar, and I played piano. The radio in the kitchen was always on. I have loved all kinds of music … The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Wonder, Elton John. And today, I really love a little bit of all genres, if it’s great.
I interned at Jim Ed Norman’s JEN Songs, and Walter Campbell recommended me for a tape copy/ beginning plugger job at Deb Dave/Briarpatch Music. I think it was 1983. It was owned by Jim Malloy, David Malloy, Eddie Rabbitt and Even Stevens. What an education!
Some of the young writers I met there were Thom Schuyler and Paul Overstreet, who are both in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. There was a studio called The Garage, and James Stroud would play drums on sessions. Eventually, James started a publishing company called The Writers Group and asked me to join him along with Thom, Paul, Fred Knobloch, Cliff Audretch, Jr. and others.
We had a blast, became successful and sold to EMI several years later. That’s how I got to EMI. I was fortunate to work with Celia Froehlig there, and I learned so much watching her work her magic.
Walker Hayes came to meet Robert [Carlton] and me and, although we knew he was incredibly talented, that deal didn’t make sense at the time for a (then) small independent company like Smack. Thank goodness Walker and Shane later connected at Smoothie King! It’s been such a blessing for all – Walker is now managed by Robert, and I’m so thankful Walker is part of our team. Shane really does have a special vision for artists.
I’ve had some big cuts through the years, but my biggest triumph is seeing hardworking songwriters become successful. Of late, it’s seeing a guy like Josh Jenkins, who’s been in his smaller, corner writer’s room almost every day. Josh just won CMA Song of the Year and writer and song at SESAC. We have so many writers celebrating victories thanks to our team, and it’s exciting to watch.
Some writers just have a spark. When I reconnected with Shane, I knew we had to work together. I’ve felt it with every single one over the many years, including everyone on our roster.
Our mission is to always keep the song in mind and do our absolute best to help develop deserving songwriters. It’s the most important part of the business.
SmackSongs is always evolving and changing, and we have to keep our focus on what this company was built on: great songwriters, a great team and a whole lot of heart.

Dick Broadcasting WRNS/ Greenville, NC led the overall ratings with an 11.3 share (see the full CDM Scoreboard here) and also takes the top spot in morning drive with a 12.5 share courtesy of its airing of The Bobby Bones Show. WHKO/Dayton PD Nancy Wilson also anchors morning drive with Aaron “Woody” Woods, and they claim second place with an 11.6 share. Third place is a three-way tie with WZZK/ Birmingham’s Rick & Bubba, WDRM/Huntsville’s Dingo & Blair and WIVK/Knoxville’s newly minted morning hosts Joey Tack and Nancy Barger WRNS afternoon host Mica Cadena came close to making it a clean sweep for WRNS, finishing a tenth of a share out of first place in that daypart. Instead, first place in afternoons goes to Erik “EJ” Johnson, who jumps from ninth last quarter; his 10.9 share helps KXKT/Omaha finish seventh overall. Last quarter’s afternoon leaders, WUSY’s Mo & Styckman, slip to third, while WHKO’s Jake Ryan places fourth in the daypart. See Q2 results here and Q1 results here

Florida Georgia Line’s debut single, “Cruise,” reached the top and makes Hubbard the first artist in Country chart history to go to No. 1 with debut singles both as part of a duo/group and as a solo artist. Songwriters are Jaren Johnston, Chase McGill and Hubbard
Morgan Wallen sets a new personal best as “Thought You Should Know” starts its chart run at No. 35 this week. His previous high debut, “Wasted On You,” entered at No. 43 in June.
Kudos to Chris Palmer, Ashley Sidoti and the Valory team on scoring 59 adds for “Heaven By Then” by Brantley Gilbert & Blake Shelton , featuring Vince Gill . The song’s No. 43 debut also returns Gill to the chart for the first time since his appearance on Maren Morris ’ “Dear Hate” five years ago and makes Gill just the fourth artist to chart in each of the past five decades, joining Garth Brooks , Reba McEntire and George Strait

sneaking suspicion Cole was going to bring Jo Dee out, and as soon as I heard him start the song in a different key, I knew I was spot on! It was also a pleasant surprise to see Lainey Wilson’s speech recognizing her dad hit me in the heart. Moments like that, along with Brothers Osborne asking Wynonna to stay onstage with them, epitomize what country music is all about in celebrating each other. I do wish they’d have found more than a 1.5 second still-shot way to celebrate the broadcast award winners, though.”
•Apple Music Country host Kelleigh Bannen: “Going into the night, I was most excited to see The War & Treaty with Brothers Osborne. John Osborne announcing he and Lucie [Silvas] are pregnant with twins was the sweetest moment of the night. The only oversight for me was a musical moment honoring The Judds and acknowledging Naomi’s passing. That could have been very powerful. The sound in the room was really strong, and there wasn’t a weak vocal moment throughout the show.”
•Hubbard WIRK/West Palm Beach morning host Tim Leary: “I tried hard to start a rumor that KISS was doing a special collaboration with Luke Bryan and Thomas Rhett, but [co-host] Chelsea [Taylor] promptly rained on my parade. The ‘hold our beer’ performance of the night came from Kelsea Ballerini, Kelly Clarkson and Carly Pearce with ‘You’re Drunk, Go Home.’ If they form a group and record an

I grew up absolutely loving KYW-AM/ Philadelphia, News Radio 1060. Every time we went back to visit family, that was all my dad listened to in the car. I can still sing the original jingles in my head! I was also listened a lot to Rock WQNS/Asheville, NC.
I used to play radio in my room. I used a TalkBoy – from Home Alone 2 – and my boombox to host my own radio shows. I made commercials for toys in my room and played music off cassette tapes. Aircheck sessions are always hard, but they are even worse when you’re forcing your family to listen to your fake radio show.
My older brother, Josh, works at iHeartMedia Top 40 WQNQ/Asheville. When he got his first job in radio, I was in middle school and would go to work with him. Eventually, the company hired me to be a weekend board op and remote tech, because I already knew how everything worked. My foot was in the door, and I’ve refused to leave since.
I have been surrounded by incredible radio friends and mentors including former WKSF PD Jeff Davis, Rick Rice, Brian Hall, Kix Layton, Bruce Logan, Angie Ward and of course, my brother.
My favorite song on the radio right now – in any format – is hands down Zach Bryan’s “Something In The Orange.” I can’t get enough of that one. A very close second is the new Blink-182 song, “Edging.”
My top-five most influential artists, songs, albums or concerts are:
1. Eric Church. He can do no wrong. Sinners Like Me, Carolina and Chief got me through college and my early 20s.
2. Led Zeppelin IV. Shaped my musical tastes and influences. I can’t tell you how many cassette copies I went through.
3. Beastie Boys at the Orange Peel in Asheville. I saw them play with Mix Master Mike and Biz Markie before they played Bonnaroo –one of the last shows before MCA died. It was hands-down the best concert I’ve ever been to. I often remember how much fun I had, how I lived in the moment with no phone in my hand, and I think of that when we’re planning station experiences for our listeners.
4. Taylor Swift. Being married to a die-hard Swiftie, I’ve been to my fair share of Taylor shows, and they are all crazy good! Not only does she put on a high-energy, extremely fun show, but she is so focused on her fans.
5. Jake Owen’s “What We Ain’t Got.” This has always hit me hard, but even harder after hearing it as a story song during our radiothons for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Hearing the story of that incredible boy, Chance, over the song has forever changed it for me, and I still tear up when it plays.
I’ve taken my time to ensure the sound and production from my home studio is the best it can be. I do go into the office during the week, but the majority of my shows are done at home.
If you’re not on social media, you’re missing out. It’s not just fourand-the-door anymore; your show can live all the time. I’m an open book on socials, sharing my family, offering funny thoughts and being as open as I am on-air.
My favorite follow is Gary Vee. He can motivate you to do anything. Also, Joe Rogan,. Reach Michael here
album singing nothing but obituaries, I’ll be the first in line to buy it!”
•Audacy KWJJ/Portland morning co-host Kristen Flowers: “The Kelsea, Kelly and Carly number fell flat for me. I was sadly disappointed by the big female performances; the Loretta Lynn tribute needed more fire and attitude. I don’t want to see someone do something shocking, but all the performances were a bit too safe. But it sounded great, and every performance was clean with no major stumbles for me.”
•Audacy KWJJ/Portland morning co-host Nick Steele: “Where the hell was Walker Hayes? It was a missed opportunity to not have him front and center to represent new country fans. Old Dominion putting themselves aside to honor Jeff Cook of Alabama during their speech was cool of them and seemed genuine. The
collaborations could’ve been wilder. A few years ago, they did some mashups with other genres, and I really enjoyed that.”
•Townsquare KAWO/Boise Brand Mgr. Kyle Matthews: “I thought the sound and production were good, and the collaborations and performances were great. But, this year felt safe. The show was pretty mellow, and they stayed away from a lot of things. I’d have liked to hear Bobby Bones do a monologue. I spiced up the night by walking my at-home red carpet in gym shorts, UGG boots, a Carhart vest and beanie and a custom Tyler Rich shirt.”
•Alpha KUPL/Portland APD/MD/midday host Danny Dwyer: “I was disappointed with the Elle King performance, as I thought it was very ‘Miley Cyrus,’ so I ventured to the kitchen to grab some snacks and drinks. Zac Brown Band was absolutely sick, and seeing Patty Loveless perform with Chris and Morgane Stapleton was awesome! Most of today’s audience probably didn’t remember the song, so I’m sure Google was busy reminding people who Patty Loveless was and who sang the song originally.”
•Bristol Broadcasting WXBQ/Johnson City, TN PD/morning co-host Nikki Thomas: “Carly Pearce doing ‘Dear Miss Loretta’ with Ricky Skaggs and Sonya Isaacs blew me away. In the past, I’ve heard people say Alan Jackson brought true country back to the format in the early ’90s, and it felt like he took us back to center again with the performances tied to his acknowledgement by the CMA. For anyone new to the format from the Pop side, they got to see a roomful of performers moved to tears by traditional music and were able to see how that type of music made the young, up-and-coming artists and fans sing those songs word-for-word.”
•iHeartMedia WSSL/Greenville MD/ afternoon host Aaron Michael: “The hosts were amazing – not too in-your-face, not trying too hard, but plenty of laughs. They need to host again! Country is still very much alive, regardless of what outsiders say, and this CMA Awards ranks top for me among recent years. It really was so dang good!”
•Hoosier WCJC/Kokomo, IN APD/afternoon personality Paisley Dunn: “Jordan Davis gave one of my favorite speeches of the night after his win, because it was a real moment, and I would have reacted the same way. The hosting combo was fantastic, and the bromance between Peyton and Luke was contagious! This was my favorite year since the time Brad [Paisley] and Carrie [Underwood] did the Tim & Faith Barbie monologue. And the hottest trend of the night was definitely fringe! I knew my fashion choices were on point this year!”
•Cumulus WGKX/Memphis morning host Andrew “Latty” Latimer: “I had never seen Lainey [Wilson] perform, and ‘Wait In The Truck’ with Hardy didn’t disappoint. The stage and setting with the house and truck mixed with the smoke rolling in just made the song and performance more real for me. I thought Morgan Wallen was a shoo-in to win Male Vocalist at the very least this year, so I was surprised he didn’t walk away with anything. Other than that, I didn’t see any missteps at all, and this year’s CMA wards was one of the best I’ve seen!” –Monta Vaden CAC
