An expanded group of Country Cares For St. Jude Kids partners gathered in Memphis for the first post-pandemic seminar this weekend (Oct. 7-8) to share best practices and hear powerful stories of the now 33-year partnership between Country radio and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. With more than $900 million raised since Randy Owen’s 1989 call to action, commitment to the mission that “no child should die in the dawn of life” remains steadfast.
Now officially moved from January to October, this year’s event re-launched the “This Shirt Saves Lives” campaign and was the first time influencers have been included on a track dedicated to their ability to raise awareness of St. Jude across social media. A modified tour of the hospital and buildings built during the pandemic took place Friday, while daily featured speakers and keynote addresses were given by ALSAC Pres./CEO Rick Shadyac, Jr., Dr. Maggie Cupit-Link, Dr. Lindsay Schwarz and patient families John and Jennifer Wampler and Paula Head. Remarks were delivered by Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton, ALSAC’s Jessica Turri and Annette Green, KLOS/Los Angeles’ Stew Herrera and Kevin Ryder and NAB’s Bradford Caldwell.
During his keynote, Shadyac shared that St. Jude has partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO) to dramatically increase global access to childhood cancer medicines via the largest ever financial commitment in low- and middle-income countries. Each year, an estimated 400,000 children worldwide develop cancer, and while St. Jude’s efforts have raised the survival rate to 80% overall in the U.S., the survival rate in underdeveloped countries is as low as 20%. The Global Free Drugs initiative aims to provide safe and effective cancer medications to approximately 120,000 children between 2022 and 2027. In the current two-year pilot phase, medicines are being purchased and distributed to 12 countries, expanding to 50 by the end of 2027,
Global Free Drugs is only part of St. Jude’s five-year strategic plan, however. The multi-billion-dollar commitment will support 2,300 new jobs; provide $2.3 billion in new construction, including the completion of the 140-apartment Domino’s Village to house patients and their families; and opening new areas of research. Focuses include fundamental science to drive discoveries and a reduction of the toxicity of cancer therapy to enhance quality of life for pediatric cancer survivors. St. Jude’s global commitment included the evacuation of hundreds of Ukrainian children with cancer, along with their families, to countries across Europe where they could be treated in safety. Some of the families even made it to Memphis where a mother told Shadyac, via translator, “The unconditional kindness we have experienced here is a miracle.” Shadyac explained to attendees, “Love. She’s talking about love.”
The “10 Keys To Radiothon Success” panel featured the following takeaways:
• “Set hourly goals and share them with conviction on-air every hour.” –KRWQ/Medford, OR’s Bryce Burtner
• “Urgency is the name of the game. Do it live for those two days to make it possible to be in the moment.” –WUSY/ Chattanooga’s Justin Cole
• “Always post-promote by thanking sponsors and listeners.” –Alpha/Fredericksburg, VA’s Debbie Patten
• “Never pre-promote so you can avoid tune-out. Surprise them with the emotional events.” –WDXB/Birmingham’s “Dollar Bill” Lawson
• “Be certain you are repeating the toll-free number three times, especially immediately after an emotional, impactful moment.” –WKSJ/Mobile, AL’s Bill Black

Taking the Live In The Vineyard concept to altitude in Colorado, last week’s inaugural Elevation Beaver Creek (Oct. 2-4) brought artists, decision makers, sponsors and well-heeled music lovers together for food, wine and music. The event gives the organization a second yearly tentpole showcasing country artists and their music for radio programmers, film/tv music supervisors, DSPs and media. Companies ranging from presenting sponsor Lucchese to family wineries frame the proceedings.
Forefront Networks Pres./Entertainment Bobbii Jacobs, who co-founded LITV and spearheaded the 2018 addition of Live In The Vineyard Goes Country, says Beaver Creek checks all the boxes. “Artists can showcase and shine against a beautiful backdrop where influencers can relax and take it all in,” she explains. “Across the U.S., there are maybe a dozen markets with the elements you need to do this.”
The early fall date allowed the event space alongside its LITVGC sister. “I can’t cannibalize anything,” she says. “There’s more music than ever, but I have to be able to program accordingly. Releases are in six-month cycles, so if we do LITV Country in April, there can be one in October. There are enough labels and product flow to make that work.”
More than two-dozen performers including Brett Eldredge, Elle King, Parmalee, Dylan Scott and Lainey Wilson played shows including a Sony-centric lunch and a BMG/BBR-anchored theater show for all attendees. Some events found programmers and supervisors sequestered in smaller venues, with wineries and their patrons at others. Hiking, fly fishing, skeet shooting and other activities are built into one of the days, as well.
“Each event has nine brides, and all of those brides have to be fulfilled,” Jacobs says. “The artists, programmers, managers, supervisors, media, venues, sponsors and more all have to walk out satisfied with the time and money invested.”
Making that easier for Jacobs is her recent partnership with Texas-based Forefront, which annually draws hundreds of thousands to the Austin Trail Of Lights. In years prior, Jacobs had a small team enduring long hours. “I was working until midnight and up at 4am to keep on top of it all,” she says. “While it was fulfilling, and the events were incredible, I needed a back-ofhouse.” She first spoke to CEO Jay Watson prior to the first LITV Goes Country in 2018, partnering shortly before the pandemic. “It was rocky as hell, because the events world was awful,” she says. “But we figured it out, and if we can get through that together, we can get through anything.”
With two country gatherings now anchored, could there be more in future years? “We haven’t figured it out yet,” she says, hinting at ties to the Texas market or taking the show on the road for a series of events. “It’s really about that authenticity – allowing the artist to shine in a way that drives excitement around the music.”
An evident emphasis on music placement in this year’s attendees was planned. “Everyone invited is hand picked,” Jacobs says. “This event was more music supervisors than programmers, just because I don’t want to burn people out. Everyone can’t come twice a year – we’ve all got work to do. But there is definitely going to be some sync business that comes out of Elevation.”
Her approach has been honed through experience. “Never make Mother Nature mad, and always have a backup plan for your backup plan,” she says of lessons learned. “This might sound cliché, but always do things for the right reasons, be up-front with everybody and surround yourself with the best possible team. We don’t have to be the biggest to be the best.” –Chuck Aly
Congratulations to Cole Swindell, Kristen Williams, Tom Martens, Anna Cage and the Warner/WMN promotion
My earliest memories of country music are from elementary school when my grandparents gave me an alarm clock radio for Christmas. They helped me set it so that every morning when my alarm went off it would blast my hometown Country station, [KSON/San Diego]. That’s where I first heard Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift and so many other favorites for the first time.
ANNA VAUSIn high school, [KSON] morning hosts John [Flint] and Tammy [Lee] would let me come in and perform on-air. I’d have 10 minutes to write a song about a certain topic, then I’d come in and play it on the show. Any time I’m home, I love listening to their show.
If I could give any career advice to the Younger Version Of Myself, it would be: don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Act fearlessly, know that you have something important to say, then say it.
My favorite collaboration has been with my friend, Abby Anderson, on our new song, “Younger Version Of Myself.” I wrote it from an incredibly personal place, but singing it with Abby has been a really empowering experience. We’ve grown up together through our early twenties and shared lots of ups and downs as artists and young women. Collaborating on this has given it a whole new meaning.
The Miranda Lambert Women Creator’s Fund was created to provide a $40,000 scholarship to a female Belmont University student who is pursuing a career as an artist. I was fortunate enough
to be chosen as the first recipient. It was incredibly helpful in navigating my career as a young artist and, simultaneously, allowed me to continue pursuing a college education.
Lyrically, my favorite song on Younger Version Of Myself is the title track. It’s reminded me of the power of connection through music. I was really nervous to put it out, because it’s a pretty straightforward retelling of my experience with my insecurities. But, I’ve been reminded through sharing it that music is meant to connect people to one another. That song in particular has connected me with young women who’ve struggled with some of the same issues, and I’m really grateful for the relationships that have come out of that.
Another favorite is “Take It Easy On Me.” It’s the song I find myself going back to the most. I’ve always wanted to write a song that feels breezy and reminiscent of the music I woke up listening to on KSON.
Opening for Willie Nelson is one part master class and one part out-of-body experience. I’ve learned a lot about what the beauty of a life-long career looks like watching him. There’s this wonderful air of respect Willie shows his fans; they and his crew give it right back. As a new artist, I also value his willingness to bring new acts on the road and introduce them to his fans. They’re some of the best people I’ve gotten to play for.
My 2022 highlight has been releasing my new EP. A lot of love has been poured into creating it, so releasing it feels like a big exhale. As for what’s to come, I’ve been on the road pretty much every weekend since May, which is very new for me. I’m excited to spend some time at home in the next few months – mostly hanging out with my cat and recording new music … that’s kinda the dream, right?

team for holding “She Had Me At Heads Carolina” at No. 1 for a second week. This becomes Swindell’s fourth multi-week chart topper and the eighth multi-week No. 1 so far in 2022, matching the totals for both 2021 and 2020. Songwriters are Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure, Thomas Rhett, Mark D. Sanders, Tim Nichols and Swindell.
Kudos to Dennis Reese and the RCA crew on scoring 15 adds on “Thank God” by Kane Brown and Katelyn Brown
Country Aircheck asked attendees to share their most impactful takeaways from the weekend, as well.
KEEY/Minneapolis’ Mike Dubs: “This was my first Country Cares, and my St. Jude moment was during the opening session when a former patient said her parents didn’t owe St. Jude a dime, but she owed them her life. It opened my eyes to how truly special St. Jude is and what the patients think of it.”
KFGE/Lincoln, NE’s Brooke Summers: “The aftercare exams and lifelong research of patients was my biggest educational takeaway. I’ll implement what I learned by spreading the word that St. Jude isn’t just saving lives today but is using research to improve the quality of life in the future.”
WIVK/Knoxville’s Chandler Emerson: “Hearing from Patience and her mother during the ‘Meet The Patients’ panel informed me about the depth St. Jude goes to with the patient families. Her mother was a single mom, and St. Jude comforted and supported her during that time, just as deeply as they were treating Patience.”
WGH/Norfolk’s Annaliese Lemieux-Kaplan: “I always assumed [founder] Danny Thomas was a Memphis native, but I had no idea he picked the city because, at the time, it was the most segregated city in the US, and he wanted a place for all children. I look forward to sharing these parts of the St. Jude history during radiothon this year.”
WDEZ/Wausau, WI’s Bill Fox : “I related to the parents –their fear, their joy and their hope. How the world stopped, and nothing else mattered except their child at that most horrific time in their lives. For some, there was triumph and recovery; for others, the indescribable sadness of the loss of their child. Through it all, though, no matter the outcome, they all shared hope for the future.”
KFKF/Kansas City’s Ashley Snow: “My St. Jude moment was hearing from Paula Head, Carson’s mom. I always feel the emotion of the patients’ stories from the story songs, but it didn’t become an ‘aha’ moment for me until that, when I truly felt what Paula said when she was telling us Carson’s story.”
WGKX/Memphis’ Andrew “Latty” Latimer: “I learned that cancer treatments can cure the cancer while hurting other parts of the body, but the researchers at St. Jude are working on ways to correct and stop those side effects. From digestive tissue damage to hearing loss, St. Jude doctors and researchers are treating the whole patient and working to improve quality of life for survivors year-over-year.”
WFMS/Indianapolis’ Matt Malone: “Joining the St. Jude family is so much more than you and your staff. By bringing these stories to your station, you’re bringing every member of your audience into this family. St. Jude isn’t a hospital, and it isn’t a radiothon ... St. Jude is a lifestyle. So many well-respected industry professionals – the best of the best – have bought-in and live this mission. You need to do it, too. Cancer research as a whole needs everyone in Country radio.”

Less than six years since he first appeared on the Mediabase/ Country Aircheck chart, Big Loud’s Morgan Wallen headlined his first stadium Saturday night (10/8) at Globe Life Park in Arlington, TX, home of the Texas Rangers. KSCS/Dallas APD/MD Al Farb was in the crowd.
Label mates Ernest — filling in for the recuperating Hardy — and Jake Worthington, and singer/songwriter Mike Ryan opened the show before Wallen kicked his set off with his first No. 1, “Up Down.” “There were pyrotechnics behind the band when Morgan appeared onstage,” says Farb, who noted the majority of the setlist was similar to prior shows on the Dangerous Tour. Wallen wished Hardy and his crew a speedy recovery before performing “Unapologetically Country As Hell” alongside Ernest.
“The entire show was a moment,” Farb continues. “This album came out in the pandemic, and Wallen fans haven’t seen him here since Jan. 2020. Every person in Globe Life Field knew the words to every song and were singing along. His radio singles got the biggest crowd reaction, but by far the biggest moment of the evening was his performance of ‘Sand In My Boots.’ At the end of ‘865,’ his crew wheeled out a piano, the lights went down and it was just him with 37,000 of his biggest fans. Awe inspiring.
“After performing ‘The Way I Talk,’ the stage went dark for a moment, long enough for the crowd to start chanting Morgan’s name” adds Farb. “Wallen reappeared wearing a No. 14 Dallas Cowboys jersey to close the show with ‘Heartless,’ ‘Wasted On You’ and, of course, ‘Whiskey Glasses.’”
Farb says Wallen’s growth is evident. “This is not the Morgan Wallen who opened for Florida Georgia Line in 2019, or even the one who performed his first headlining tour in late 2019 and early 2020,” he says. “This Morgan is all grown up. You can tell the events that transpired over the last year-and-a-half have changed him for the better. It’s obvious he understands how special this is, not just for him, but for his fans, country music and the industry as a whole. Morgan exuded graciousness in every move he made Saturday night. Without saying anything about what had happened, you could just tell he was thankful, mostly to his fans for allowing him to be there. And we, as fans, were so thankful to have him there as well.” Reach Farb here. –Chris Huff

• “It’s okay to change your station for two days and pull songs out of rotation that do not fit the tone and mood of the radiothon. Ensure theater of the mind continues by focusing on making the music part of the journey.” –KSRM/Kenai, AK’s Matt Wilson “Creating Content For Good” was hosted by podcaster Caroline Hobby and featured WGAR/Cleveland’s Carletta Blake, YouTube Music’s Rachel Jackson and podcast creator Robert Tuchman discussing how to message and raise awareness across platforms. “Be authentic about sharing from your seat,” advised Jackson. “Be purposeful in who you are and what your connection is to the cause.” Added Tuchman, “Raw emotion and real stories need time to take the winding journey.” Blake, who serves on the Country Cares Advisory Board, noted the importance of getting staff involved across all departments. “Everyone should be educated, engaged and involved,” she explained. “And don’t forget to connect your community hospitals to St. Jude in order to localize it for your home market.
By supporting St. Jude, you are supporting the source of the research and treatment breakthroughs.”
Among the more emotional panels was “All In The St. Jude Family,” at which WSIX/Nashville’s Gator Harrison shared that his nephew Axl is currently being treated at St. Jude. He hosted a conversation between Belmont University’s Chaz Corzine, KMLE/ Phoenix’s Gunner Jackson and longtime Country Cares board member Don Langford, whose daughters Mallory, Taytem and Annalise, respectively, have battled cancer. Each man shared their story of diagnosis and seeking treatment for their children, as well as a current update. Mallory is now married and expecting a baby, Taytem is in remission and, in a moment that earned both tears and rousing applause from the audience, Annalise took the stage alongside Langford to share her story, gratefulness for Country Cares and the pride she has in her father’s work on St. Jude’s behalf. Harrison reminded attendees, “There are stories that still need to be written, and you can make that possible.”
Shadyac hosted the annual “Meet The Patients” session, punctuated by former patient turned ALSAC employee Emily and her sister singing an original song, “The Storm,” before asking everyone to join in singing “You Are My Sunshine.”
Saturday’s closing dinner featured a round with three songs each from Scotty McCreery, Craig Morgan and Owen. Bestowed with the Angels Among Us Award, McCreery told the crowd, “When you get to have a good time and also raise funds for St. Jude ... it’s not a look at the calendar or an ask the wife; it’s a yes.” Both he and Morgan obliged when Owen made requests – McCreery’s version of “When You Say Nothing At All” led into “This Is It,” while Morgan took a moment to recall the lyrics to “Tough” after Owen’s request. As is tradition, Owen closed the evening – and seminar – with a standing singalong of “Angels Among Us.”

The September 2022 PPM Book (8/18/229/14/22) saw Country shares dip 1.3% from August, from 357.4 to 352.9. Year to year shares were up 3.9% from last September’s 339.8. There were several station highlights however, most notably WQIK/Jacksonville, its 11.5 share not only led the format this month, it is the largest share for any Country station in a PPM market since WCTK/Providence had a 12.3 in August 2020. Total cume of all stations in
September was 23,783,700, off just 5,500 from August and down 3.2% from last September. KKBQ/Houston had the format’s largest cume this month, its first time to lead the format since January. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet; a “^” designates co-owned Country stations in the metro; a “t” indicates a tie; and a “*” indicates a station that is a recent subscriber for which ratings were not currently available. Ranks are among subscribers.
