Inside The Grand Ole Opry At 97

As the Grand Ole Opry prepares for a birthday celebration spotlighting 97 years, the care and feeding of the country music industry’s original media platform may be easy to take for granted from the outside. But VP/Exec. Producer Dan Rogers, Opry Entertainment Group Dir./Artist Relations & Programming Strategy Jordan Pettit and Grand Ole Opry Dir./Talent Scheduling & Logistics Gina Keltner lead a team determined to maintain and grow all things Opry – past, present and future.

What started as the WSM Barn Dance in the fifth-floor studio of the National Life & Accident Insurance Company building in downtown Nashville in 1925, the Grand Ole Opry remains the longest-running radio broadcast in U.S. history. Owned and operated by OEG, a division of Ryman Hospitality Properties, the Opry is broadcast live from the Grand Ole Opry House east of downtown Nashville and can still be heard on Ryman Hospitality Classic Country WSM-AM/Nashville as well as via SiriusXM and online at Opry.com. In partnership with Ryman Hospitality’s joint television venture with Gray Television, Circle Media, the Opry can also be seen on the Circle Network

Lineup Dancing: Booking Opry performances is about finding balance in a mix of member and guest artists from country, bluegrass, gospel, contemporary Christian and comedy acts. “Years ago, we had a lineup ad that read, ‘If you only have one night to see it all, we’ve got just the place,’” says Rogers. “And while that was just an ad, it runs true. That’s what we should aspire to be. If you buy a ticket to any show, you’re guaranteed to see the past, present and future of country music unfold before your eyes.”

One October: Reacting To 11 Minutes

The four-part docuseries 11 Minutes, available to stream via Paramount+, debuted Sept. 27 just ahead of the fifth anniversary of the Route 91 Harvest Festival tragedy that was the largest mass shooting in American history. Firsthand accounts and archival footage are utilized, including interviews with Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean and SiriusXM’s Storme Warren; see the trailer here Country Aircheck asked industry

pros who survived the event how they felt about the series.

KUZZ/Bakersfield’s Brent Michaels: “I tried. I got 30 minutes into the first episode, and I couldn’t continue. I feel so dumb, because I had left the festival grounds an hour before the shooting, so I wasn’t even there for the most horrific parts. But it brought back the sounds of screaming in the hotel hallways, the panic of trying to get a call out to [my wife] Julie, the images of people in the lobby injured, the memory of leaving the next morning and the strip being empty – like, empty empty – like it was the end of the world. I’m not upset they made it, but it’s not for me.”

MCA’s Anna Widmer: “I haven’t watched it, and I’m not sure I want to. I’m not offended by it, I just don’t think I want to sit and watch it. It’s not my favorite thing to think about [having been there].”

KFRG/Riverside’s Dana Swearingen: “I have watched the first two episode and need to finish the final two. That was the only year I didn’t go to the festival, so it has been interesting to hear the different points of view from police, nurses and survivors. I do wonder if participants were paid, which would make it feel kind of dirty for me to continue watching. I hope it was all voluntary on the participants’ part.”

Broken Bow’s Layna Bunt: “I have not watched it and haven’t decided if I will or not, but my husband plans to watch. He knows my sensitivities, so I may see what he thinks. Part of me feels like I lived it, so why re-live it, but another part feels like respectfully, I should listen to the stories of those who suffered injury and loss. I was very lucky [to have made it out without injury], and so many others were not; that is never lost on me.”

KCYE/Las Vegas’ Paul Knight: “I saw the trailer but will not watch the documentary. [I was there, so] the trailer struck too many emotions.”

Stoney Creek’s Matt Vieira: “I have not watched, and as much as I usually love stuff like that – I’m obsessed with real crime documentaries – I haven’t been dying to watch it. I lived it, so I guess it’s just not high on my list. I’m not necessarily against

checking it out, but I think about it enough as it is.”

Industry vet JR Schumann: “I don’t have plans to watch, not for any reason other than I just don’t feel I need to [after having been there for it]. I don’t have a problem with it, and I totally understand how it fits in to society’s need to feed the fascination – albeit bizarre at times – with the macabre. My hope is that it is cathartic and healing for the people that were involved in the documentary and offers a sobering reminder of the world we live in for everyone else.”

Audacy’s Kris Daniels: “I haven’t seen it yet but plan to try and watch it. When it first happened, I didn’t watch anything. After 24 hours [of being out of the shooting], when I attempted to watch the news, I got physically ill.”

SiriusXM’s Buzz Brainard: “I didn’t watch it, and I don’t plan to, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think about it and those we lost almost every day. I lived it and was in the middle of it with my son, Hank. I spent those 11 minutes trying to protect him and shield him from danger. Sometimes we talk about that night, but it’s hard. It was horrible, and we choose not to relive it by watching the documentary. I’m glad they made it, though, and I hope it makes people wonder how that maniac and others have access to those weapons that caused so much pain.”

OFF THE RECORD

I came into a write with Lindsay Rimes and Jonathan Singleton, and I had the title “Wonderland” in my head. At some point, Jonathan was like, “What if we put ‘whiskey’ in front of it?” I freaking loved it. It paints a really cool picture I liked so much I named the record Barstool Whiskey Wonderland. It’s a great lens to listen to this record from.

We all spend a lot of time in a Barstool Whiskey Wonderland, drink in hand, wondering if we’re doing this one life we get right. That’s something I wrestle with all the time. I’m really excited for people to hear that song and the entire record.

ADAM DOLEAC

The project is the first time I’ve actually gotten to put a complete body of work out. Most people know me for love songs and releasing one song at a time. This album allows me to tell an entire story where there’s some sad, some missing-you and some love songs, but there’s a lot more context. There’s a lot of what I came from on this record … but you can really see where I’m heading as an artist, too.

There’s only one feature on the album, Danielle Bradbery on “Fake Love,” which was written by Maren Morris, Hardy, Ryan Hurd and Jordan Schmitt. Maren sang the demo and I love her voice, so that immediately attracted me to the song. It’s actually the first I’ve recorded that I did not write. A couple weeks later, Danielle Bradbery had the same experience when she heard it and also wanted the song for herself, but I already had it on hold. I’ve always been a big fan of Danielle and her voice as well, so when I heard she wanted it, I just said, “Why don’t you sing on it with me, and we’ll do a feature?” Luckily, she said yes, and she sounds so great on it.

I have never been served a watered-down vodka soda, because I’m not a vodka drinker – I’m more of a tequila soda kind of guy. Vodka kind of makes me feel like I’m drinking medicine. The only thing I do drink with vodka is an espresso martini, which is my favorite way to end a good night.

I got a business degree in college, and even as an artist, I love running the business. If I weren’t an artist, I might still be doing something in the music industry. My grandfather started an electrical company in 1947 that my dad then took over, so I’ve worked electrical pretty much every summer, winter or break. Without music giving me a reason to leave home, I might still be there running wires right now.

The biggest highlight of 2022 was getting engaged in February. We went through a couple really tough years with the pandemic, but we also got to spend some time, take vacations and see family together. And I got to get down on one knee and propose.

Am I planning my wedding? That’s a big fat no – my fiancé MacKinnon is. With touring starting back up, I have been busy – home one day a week for the last month or two. She is (luckily) a planner, and I am very lucky to have that girl. We’re only a few months out, so we’re

Swindell’s 12th, after five weeks at No. 2. While highly unusual, such a lengthy wait in the runner-up spot is not unprecedented – in 2004, Keith Urban spent five weeks at No. 2 with “You’ll Think Of Me” before finally reaching the pinnacle. Songwriters are Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure, Thomas Rhett, Mark D. Sanders, Tim Nichols and Swindell. Both Sanders and Nichols are credited by virtue of co-writing the song’s inspiration, “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” and finally get a No. 1 for their efforts, as that track peaked at No. 4 for Jo Dee Messina in 1996.

Kudos to Bobby Young and the Capitol crew on scoring 41 adds for Jon Pardi ’s “Your Heart Or Mine;” this is Pardi’s sixth time to top the MB/CA Add Board. It is also the sixth time Capitol has led the Add Board this year, the most for any label so far.

Inside The Grand Ole Opry At 97

from page 1)

The nuts and bolts of that fall to Keltner, who recently celebrated 23 years with the Opry. “I assemble each show and have my hands in the details related to all artist appearances, from beginning to end,” she says. “We counted once, and it’s somewhere around 2,500 slots per year, so it’s quite the juggling act.” The Opry team produces multiple shows per week and last year marked 5,000 consecutive Saturday night broadcasts, even keeping the circle unbroken during the pandemic and through the 2010 Nashville flood. Keltner works two-to-three months ahead. “If an artist team wants to coordinate around an album release, milestone moment or similar event, we will look further out,” she says. “Sometimes it’s more last-minute as I try to fill a cancellation.” More than 230 artists have been inducted as members of the Grand Ole Opry, and in August, Don Schlitz became the 71st active member – and first non-artist songwriter – to gain induction.

Member Ship: “My role is to steer the Opry ship such that we are always presenting the newest acts, superstars and legends of country music on that stage the best way we possibly can every time that curtain goes up,” says Rogers, who has been with the company since 1998. A myriad of factors go into induction selections, including career accomplishment, the potential for continued success, musical and generation balance, a passion for country music’s fans, a connection to the music’s history and a willingness to make significant sacrifices to uphold the traditions of the Grand Ole Opry. “But it comes down to relationships,” explains Rogers. Adds Keltner, “It’s not a decision that is taken lightly nor made overnight. We use the words relationship and commitment, because we need artists to make a commitment to be on that Opry stage. There are artists who belong in the Country Music Hall of Fame but maybe don’t necessarily make sense for Opry membership, because we expect and need them to be available and committed to the Opry.”

Collaboration with the artist constituency doesn’t end onstage, however. Pettit and his team work with artist camps to align their initiatives with the Opry’s to grow awareness for both. “We build additional value to the artist through their Opry engagement using the broader spectrum of OEG businesses – WSM-AM, Circle TV, the Ryman Auditorium and Ole Red,” Pettit notes. “We spend a lot of time in the artist development space investing in the next generation of country stars.” He points to the Opry Next Stage program, showcases and pop-up shows, live streams, album release events and fan experiential event. “We are curating talent who will hopefully build lasting relationships with the Grand Ole Opry and will therefore be performing and appearing at Opry functions for the next 100 years.”

On-Air Castle: Of course, the Opry remains a live radio broadcast, and its first announcer, George D. Hay , is credited

with creating its name. At the time, a classical music and grand opera program preceded Hay’s Barn Dance . On the evening of Dec. 10, 1927, as he was introducing DeFord Bailey, Hay stated: “For the past hour, we have been listening to music largely from Grand Opera, but from now on, we will present The Grand Ole Opry .”

Today’s stable of rotating announcers includes Bill Cody, Mike Terry, Charlie Mattos and the most recent addition – the Grand Ole Opry’s first-ever female announcer – Kelly Sutton. “To stand behind that podium is an absolute honor and one I never dreamed could be a possibility for me,” Sutton says. “I remember my first night broadcasting, Jeannie Seely, the grand dame of the Opry family, came up to me, took me by the hand and said, ‘It’s about time. Welcome to the family.’” Aside from introducing each act, announcers are also responsible for reading live spots for sponsors including Dollar General and Boot Barn, making in-show announcements, reading birthday and anniversary celebratory notes and conducting any in-show contesting.

The house band includes bandleader/background singer Rod Fletcher; music director/guitarist Kerry Marx; Country Music Hall of Famer Eddie Bayers on drums; along with Mark Beckett (drums); Randy Hart (keyboard); Eamon McLoughlin (fiddle, mandolin, percussion); Mike Noble (guitar, bass, banjo, harmonica); Danny Parks (guitar); Larry Paxton (bass, guitar); Tommy White (pedal steel, dobro, lap steel, slide guitar); and Kim Keyes, Tony King, Mica Roberts and Marty Slayton (background vocals). From musicians to lighting techs, security, ushers and ticket-takers, management, announcers, stagehands, and a woman who makes fresh-squeezed lemonade daily and goes simply by the name “Lemonade,” the Opry employs more than 100, all of whom consider themselves part of the Opry family.

We Are Family: “We want everyone to feel like part of a community, and part of a history and legacy just by being here,” Rogers says. That openness extends to creators outside the traditional country realm, as well. “We’ve had the Beach Boys and James Taylor, and a personal highlight was Lisa Marie Presley making an appearance,” says Keltner. “Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks have been here, Leslie Jordan, Dennis Quaid, Steve Martin have, too. Nancy Grace was a guest announcer. Anyone who loves and appreciates music and treats the Opry with reverence is welcome.”

Outside influences and first-time debuts are captured by Pettit and team for cross-platform content including Instagram takeovers and the My Opry Debut video series. “OEG has some robust social assets, and we’re speaking to a predisposed country audience, so we see that as a great value to artists, especially when they’re here onsite to perform,” he explains. “We have big ideas in the world of content and are constantly exploring options to expand the footprint, grow the brands and bring more collaborative content creation to artists and their teams.”

This week (Oct. 4-9), the Grand Ole Opry will host special performances, plaza parties and surprises in honor of the 97th birthday. The Opry At 97 ticket package will offer exclusive tour and show access in additional to daily Opry Backstage Tours, a matinee Opry Loves The ’90s Q&A and performance with Deana Carter inside Studio A, an Opry picnic lunch and birthday-themed shows Friday (10/7) and Saturday (10/8). Details at www.Opry. com. Reach Rogers here, Pettit here and Keltner here.
