CRS: New Kids On The Block

Last week’s CRS 2023 wrapped with an overall rise in attendance, according to CRB, spurred by more than 200 first-time attendees (CAT 3/16). Country Aircheck caught up with a few of them for feedback.
NRG KFGE/Lincoln, NE afternoon personality
Brooke Summers: “It may seem like the easy answer, but the Garth Brooks interview was my favorite. The heartfelt passion he spoke with, his memory about events and details from the past, and his love for Country radio and his fans were all on full display. He could quite literally be anywhere in the world, but his love for the industry brought him to CRS. I returned from CRS reinvigorated about radio – Country radio, specifically. I learned you get out of CRS what you put in; attend panels, take notes, and ask questions if you have them. Seek out extra events. Meet with other radio people. This experience far exceeded my expectations.”
Urban One WLHK/Indianapolis morning co-host Cole Dunbar: “I came back with way too many stories to share! CRS provided many experiences I would have otherwise not had access to, including connecting with others in our industry. As a first timer, the whole conference could be a bit overwhelming walking in. I was lucky enough to be attending with someone who had been before and could show me the ropes, but an [introduction] event for first- or second-timers at the beginning of the week could be really helpful. It’s a jam-packed schedule, and you don’t want to miss anything! Two days later, and I’m still exhausted.”
Bryan Broadcasting/Bryan-College Station, TX OM Robbie Mack: “Sitting six rows back listening to Garth Brooks talk about life, music and radio will probably go down as a lifetime highlight. Beyond that, being in the company of hundreds of like-minded professionals who all have the same goals of advancing our business forward was just awesome. Radio needs more of that – sharing of ideas and face time with your peers. I loved the ‘Prep Rally’ and ‘Radio & Records: Redefining The Relationship’ sessions and came away with a lot of great information. The last-minute addition of the RadioGPT session was smart and could have gone on for 30 more minutes!”

CRS Research, X to Z
The CRS 2023 research project produced by NuVoodoo tested 716 titles with a nationwide sample of 2,817 country fans aged 18 to 54. The sample was divided among Gen Zs (14-26), Millenials (27-43) and Gen Xs (44-54), showing distinct differences among the generations. Classic Rock was the top secondary format for Gen X, while Millenials and Gen Zs both ranked Hip Hop as their top alternate to Country.
Not surprisingly, era preferences differed among the generations, with Gen X and Millenials giving high favorable marks to country from the ‘90s (84% and 78% positive respectively), while Gen Zs, most of whom weren’t alive for the decade, gave the category 67% positive.
Streaming services rose to lead traditional radio as the top source for new music discovery. Streaming grew from 53% to 62% and YouTube grew from 54% to 60%, pushing radio to third despite its 57% to 59% growth. Among Gen Zs, radio fell to fourth behind TikTok.

One of the biggest music takeaways was the strength of pre-2000s titles, with 13 of the top 25 songs dating from the ‘80s or ‘90s. Country Aircheck compared gold airplay among the Mediabase published panel for the past week and found the most-played pre-2000 title comes in at No. 104, and only eight pre2000 titles are among the 200 most-played.
Just two songs, Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” and Zac Brown Band’s “Chicken Fried,” ranked in the top 25 in both the CRS research and the Mediabase most-played gold (see page 11 & 12). While no playlist is going to mirror a research list as multiple factors on an individual station will vary songs’ rotations, there is still a wide gulf between the top testing titles in the CRS research and those currently receiving the most airplay. Next week, Country Aircheck takes a deeper dive into gold airplay with the latest edition of the Power Gold 100.

CRS: New Face Tats
Summarizing what makes the New Faces show an unrivaled honor and opportunity, Jelly Roll said, “It’s not often you get to play for the people who changed your life.” Well, first he said, “What’s up, motherfuckers,” but more on that later. Frank Ray, Jackson Dean, Priscilla Block, Nate Smith and the aforementioned Mr. Roll closed CRS 2023 Wednesday (3/15) by performing for the radio and streamers who voted them the future of the genre.
Many of the New Faces experienced nervousness on the stage that helped launch artists including Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton and Alabama. Smith and Jelly Roll admitted to “shaking” and “fucking trembling,” respectively, while Block laughed her way through some technical difficulties, saying, “If this wasn’t a little bit of a shit show, y’all would probably be a little disappointed.”
Ray kicked off the night with “Country’d Look Good on You,” “Tequila Mockingbird” with a splash of “Come And Get Your Love,” “Somebody Else’s Whiskey” and “Y’all Showed Up.” Keeping his promise of adding a “whole lotta spice,” which the chicken dinner could’ve used, Ray invited salsa dancers to the stage for “Streetlights” with an infusion of “Despacito.”
The show was dedicated to the late Charlie Monk and featured the presentations of the Artist Humanitarian Award to Tracy Lawrence and the Tom Rivers Humanitarian Award to KUZZ/Bakersfield PD/on-air personality Brent Michaels between performances. “[‘Wings’] wouldn’t have made it without Brent Michaels,” said Dean, who also played “Heavens To Betsy,” current single “Fearless,” and his inaugural No. 1, “Don’t Come Lookin’.”

“We’re going to turn this into a big ol’ dive-y trash bar,” Block told the conference room of people in suits eating roasted potatoes as she introduced “My Bar.” She closed her set, which also featured “Off the Deep End,” “Me Pt. 2” and “Just About Over You,” by thanking outgoing UMG/ Nashville Chairman/CEO Mike Dungan for believing in her, and, naturally, shot-gunning a beer.
Keeping the tradition of entertaining New Faces intro videos alive, Smith opened with “Name Storms After,” followed by “Wreckage,” “Better Boy” and his multi-week No. 1, “Whiskey On You.” “Thank you so much Country radio for giving me a chance to do this for a job,” said Smith. “I get to be a messenger of music that can touch hearts.”

messages like “I only pray when I ain’t got a prayer,” Jelly Roll graced the stage with “Halfway To Hell,” current single “Need a Favor” and No. 1 “Son Of A Sinner” before welcoming surprise guests Brantley Gilbert and Struggle Jennings for “Behind Bars” and closing with “Save Me.” “I believe that country music and me share one thing,” he said. “It’s real music for real people with real problems.” –Caitlin
Kane And Able
Townsquare WITL/Lansing, MI PD Jonathan “JR” Ruppel was on hand for opening night (3/16) of Kane Brown’s Drunk Or Dreaming Tour in Grand Rapids. “Pre-show, Kane admitted to me that he was nervous,” says Ruppel. “It’s the first time he’s kicked off a new show in more than three years.” Ruppel says Brown had little to be nervous about. “The show featured plenty of pyrotechnics and multiple confetti blasts. Most of his country hits were represented on the setlist, even his chart debut, ‘Used To Love You Sober,’ which he told the crowd he’d included for the first time in more than five years.” A surprise guest led to the night’s biggest cheers, “Toward the end, Kane’s wife Katelyn joined him for their hit duet ‘Thank God.’ The show closed with ‘Good As You.’ There was no encore, but Kane signed autographs for several fans positioned nearest the stage.”

CRS: How It Oughta BMLG
–Chris HuffMaking his debut at the label group’s annual luncheon Wednesday (3/15), Chris Janson raved, “I’ve never been prouder to be a Big Machine artist.” His three-song set included “Rowdy Gentleman,” “Outlaw Ways” and “All I Need Is You,” during which he thanked the audience for “giving this song a chance.”
Shane Profitt and Valory’s newest signee, Mackenzie Carpenter, celebrated their first CRS appearances with performances of “How It Oughta Be” and “Don’t Mess With Exes,” respectively. “Somebody is cutting onions in here,” laughed the former while talking about his journey from dropping the Jansons off at CRS last year to having a top 20 song.
The first surprise of the event was the plaque presentation for Conner Smith’s gold-certified “Take It Slow.” “If anyone were to ask me what my goal is for this year, it all revolves around Country radio and [‘Creek Will Rise’],” Smith noted. Danielle Bradbery was next with “Stop Dragging Boots” and “A Special Place,” followed by Riley Green’s “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” – “think of how many grandpas there’d be,” someone (me) commented – and “Different Round Here,” Green’s next single featuring Luke Combs.
“I think this is my 16th CRS,” began Justin Moore. “I started when I was eight … I’m still the size of an eight-year-old,” he quipped. Moore opened with “Woman You Love” before bringing out surprise guest Priscilla Block for “You, Me, And Whiskey” and closer “Small Town USA.” Setting a new record for most tattoos on a CRS stage, Jelly Roll joined Brantley Gilbert for “something y’all ain’t going to play,” “Son Of The Dirty South.” “Sometimes I feel like the world is running off and leaving me behind,” said Gilbert during his intro of current single “Heaven By Then.” “I don’t think that’s such a bad thing sometimes.” –Caitlin DeForest
CRS: Catching Zs
During Wednesday afternoon’s (3/15) “Okay, Boomer! A Conversation With Gen Z,” designated Boomer and iHeartMedia National Programming Group EVP/Programming Maynard moderated a discussion between iHeartMedia Top 40 & Rhythmic Brand Coord. Dan Hunt and Gen Z representatives Big Loud Sr. Mgr./Streaming Brittani Koster and Audacy Top 40 KAMP/ Los Angeles afternoon personality & West Coast Country weekend host Josh “Bru” Brubaker. Koster encouraged attendees to embrace the data and insights streaming platforms can provide about radio listeners and country music consumers, while Hunt spoke to the challenges and rewards of managing Gen Z. “This generation wants to be listened to, and they want to be managed to their strengths and in the ways that individually motivate them,” said Hunt. He noted there’s no longer a one-size-fits-all approach to managing team members, and more often than not, a more respectful conversation and correction goes further than a stern reprimand. Brubaker discussed his radio background and success with social media – specifically TikTok – while explaining Gen Z wants

to feel authentically connected to their passion, whether it is a genre of music, a particular artist or an on-air talent. All three panelists noted Gen Z’s propensity for content creation and encouraged hiring managers to consider putting this generation in positions to elevate brands with their talents. –Monta

CRS: Prep In Your Step
Wednesday’s (3/15) 30-minute “Prep Rally” was moderated by Silverfish nationally syndicated Y’All Access host Kelly Sutton and included actionable tips from Reynolds Group Talent Coaching owner Steve Reynolds; Hubbard WIRK/West Palm Beach morning host Tim Leary; and Forever WXCY/Wilmington, DE PD/midday host Charlie Maxx. Show prep strategies included searching for and finding your own content, utilizing paid show-prep services and implementing personal stories and moments. Among the key takeaways was Reynolds’ F.A.I.R. content strategy – fun, authentic, innovative and relevant. The four over-arching areas from which panelists advised drawing show topics include topical news and pop culture, things in your own life that define who you are, local happenings and the country music world. Full list of takeaways here –Monta Vaden
CRS: F-Bombing Like Espo
Being personality-driven, live and local, and embracing music the audience is open to may not be novel ideas, but applying them was the focus of Tuesday’s (3/14) “Just Effing Do It: The Rewards Of Taking Risks.” Prompted by moderator Becky Brenner, Top 40 KNDE/Bryan-College Station, TX OM Rob Mack and KYGO/Denver PD Brian Michel addressed the topic in three major categories: talent, brand marketing and music. “If you have great talent, you can create something that can’t be replicated on any streaming service,” Michel said, noting DSPs aren’t the entirety of radio’s competition. “We’re not just fighting for audio share; we’re fighting for

entertainment share.” Mack detailed a risk he took on a local college student who went from weekends to nights. “He showed a real interest in wanting to be on the air and sounded pretty good,” he said.
Michel pointed to the success of the Nashville Predators in community outreach, making the franchise something the community would miss aside
from the product on the ice. He asked, “If your radio station turned off tomorrow, would the community miss it?” Other takeaways included shifting radiothons to Wed.-Thurs. since people “check out” on Fridays and how spending the money to fly-in potential hires reduces the long-term risk of adding an incompatible team member. –Chuck Aly
CRS: Jacobs’ “Fred Talk”

Citing Yogi Berra’s line “the future ain’t what it used to be,” Jacobs Media Pres. Fred Jacobs focused Wednesday’s (3/15) “Fred Talk” on tech. Opening with an audio greeting from Taylor Swift – via almost passable AI-generation – he noted, “If you think it’s shaky, [today’s version] is the worst it’s ever going to be.” Flagging the metaverse as potentially a “false positive,” he countered that AI chatbots are the “real deal.” Jacobs devoted considerable time to the “screenification of cars.” Urging radio to prepare, he said, “Make sure we look as good in the car as we sound. Metadata is the key ... I can send messages to the audience [but] not too many.” He also encouraged use of QR codes, newsletters and attending CES to “understand what’s around the corner.” He concluded with a proposed shift from radio being the hub of a station’s wheel to content being at the center, with the over-the-air signal as one of the more significant spokes. –Chuck Aly
Chart Chat
Congratulations to Luke Combs, Steve Hodges, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia promotion team on holding “Going, Going, Gone” at No. 1 for a second week. Songwriters are Ray Fulcher, James McNair and Combs. This is the fifth consecutive multi-week No. 1 in the chart year, the first such streak since Aug. to Oct. 2012.

Kudos to Adrian Michaels and the Stoney Creek crew on racking up 34 adds for Frank Ray’s “Somebody Else’s Whiskey” to lead this week’s Add Board.

CRS: New Kids On The Block
(continued from page 1)
Townsquare WYRK/Buffalo weekend/overnight host “Chris Owen” Baggs: “CRS lived up to expectations: busy and busy! Being able to meet and talk about music and radio with [BMLGR Pres./CEO] Jimmy Harnen was a personal highlight, as was being able to finally meet people in the industry I had not yet met. I do wish the Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney interviews had been in bigger rooms, though.”
Cox KWEN/Tulsa morning co-host Caitlin Fisher: “My favorite panel was ‘Merch Madness’ – I took so many key ideas away and brought them back to implement. Being able to experience all of these

TOP 25 GOLD TITLES IN AIRPLAY
events as a bystander and not a worker was a revitalizing experience. I got to be a fan again and was reminded how that felt – the best feeling! I was expecting CRS to be mainly educational, and I did learn a lot, but CRS did a great job of balancing that with fun. I found myself wishing for more sessions, because there were still so many areas I could learn from if given the opportunity, but there’s probably not enough time in a week to cover all the different aspects of radio. Not only was I reminded of how awesome my job is and how much I love it, [CRS also] sparked a new fire in me to bring back to my market. I want to help not only make my station better, but radio as a whole!”
Dick WUBB/Savannah, GA PD/afternoon personality Nathan James: “I’ve planned to attend CRS for years, but the stars never aligned. Now that I’m back in my happy place as a PD for a Country station, I knew it was a must-attend function to grow my skillset, learn from experts and network face-to-face with former co-workers and industry legends. The UMG showcase at the Ryman was beyond memorable, and I’m still talking about it both on- and off-air. CRS is one of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced, and it’s something every person in Country radio needs to do at least once, if not yearly. The face-time with the industry’s most experienced professionals is unbelievable, the open sharing of expertise from colleagues is incredible, and the passion that every person has for not only our industry but for Country radio is apparent the moment you walk into the Omni. I will be back, no ifs, ands or buts.”
Malkan Rock KKBA/Corpus Christi, TX on-air personality Jared Dey: “CRS has always been a dream destination, though I’ve never been in the Country format. I’ve told programmers in the past I wanted to attend, and they weren’t interested or understanding. Having now attended, yes, it’s a conference with a lot of country music. But the biggest thing I can tell any programmer in any format is, if you are skeptical, don’t be! CRS may be focused on country music, but the panels are for all formats. Just swap out ‘Country’ for CHR, Rock or Urban, and you can still apply the lessons learned. CRS is radio’s opportunity for growth, change, music ... and possibly a little drinking, as well.”
