Letter From the President Hi everyone! I am incredibly honored and excited to welcome you all to Counterparts’ 2023 Fall Show, thank you for joining us tonight! Being President of Counterparts this year has been such an incredible experience, and I am so proud of everything this group has accomplished this semester. From bringing in 3 incredibly talented new members in early September who blew us away the moment they stepped foot into the audition room, to performing at the College of Arts and Sciences Family Luncheon, being the headliners of the Kelly Anne Donal Memorial Fund Fall Fundraiser, finalizing details on our upcoming 2023 album (which will be releasing very soon!), an upcoming performance for the Pennsylvania Society Gala in New York City, and preparing for our Fall show, we certainly have had a packed semester. It has been amazing to be able to sing with such a talented and kind group of people. I also could not have planned and executed this show without my wonderful and extremely dedicated board members. A big thank you to Megan Higgins, Shreya Krishnan, Shreya Balasubramanian, Grace Gramins, Brandon Tsai, and Alain Welliver. On behalf of everyone in Counterparts, I sincerely hope you enjoy the show!

Letter From the Music Director I came to Penn for collegiate a cappella. There were, of course, a myriad of other reasons I was drawn to this school, but I sincerely mean it when I say that the a cappella scene on this campus was one of the three driving factors that made me to want to apply early. Even if I didn’t know it specifically at the time, I think something within me knew that something special was waiting for me in the Penn performing arts community. There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not grateful for Counterparts. Whether it’s the people that have embraced every part of who I am, the music that continually inspires me, or the unbelievable performance opportunities we have been fortunate enough to have, this group has given me cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

Counterparts, it’s been a privilege to be your music director and live out my choir director (music fairy) dreams, but an even greater honor to be your friend — thank you for the most incredible four years. I hope you can see the passion and joy this family shares on the IGT stage tonight.

Member Bios If you are familiar with Pixie Hollow, you are familiar with Megan “Music Fairy” Higgins. It is in fact a myth that Pixie Hollow fairies are born from a baby’s first laugh emerging from the Pixie Dust Tree. No, it is Megan’s music knowledge, compositions and boundless enthusiasm about collegiate a cappella which fuels this tree and every fairy born from it. Let me tell you, after her time as CP music director, Pixie Hollow has a population control issue. But we’re not here to talk about fairy politics, we’re here to talk about Megan’s radiant presence and infinite talent. She may run a tight ship, but she certainly keeps us all afloat with her musical genius. When she is not leading us through song and teaching us more about music and the physiology of singing, she’s likely singing herself away at gigs with her band or with Penn Jazz. Her midwestern charm and controlled chaos always keeps life spicy. Megan definitely knows how to kick back and relax (party) with Friars, but she’s also ready to snap into action at a moment’s notice as UPenn’s current ACK chair. Without her, the campus would genuinely collapse in on itself. Personally, we don’t know what we would do. You aren’t Hallucinate (ing), she really does sound like this live! Give it up for Megan Higgins!

If you ever hear a Jennifer Coolidge impression echoing through the halls of Platt, there’s a 99% chance you’re about to run into Brandon “I want to play with the puppies” Kanell. Our IR baddie and French aficionado may have only ever seen her act in one scene that one time, but that won’t stop him from repeating the same line over and over again to anyone who will listen.

Whether it’s using his smooth baritone voice in rehearsal or chilling on the Counterpartment porch (balcony) with his Comfy hood up, Brandon always knows how to bring the vibes. Besides that, his passions include – in no particular order – Carriage Senior Society, baking Tollhouse cookie dough in the middle of the night, Turkey (the country), and singing the words, “heyyy recording” in various keys. Brandon’s bright smile and infectious energy captured our hearts From the Start, and his jazzy tone is sure to blow you away tonight.

Member Bios When Kai “Meme Queen” Kelly isn’t grinding for the MCAT, working at the clinic, or cooking up in the lab, she’s riffing the house down at Counterparts rehearsals and performances. Her energy is nothing short of electric, and she brightens even the gloomiest of days with her thoughtful, warm, and genuine personality. While she keeps her days thoroughly busy, she somehow finds time to regularly share both hilarious memes and toptier music recommendations with the group. Her razor sharp wit and infectious humor have caught the attention of numerous celebrity suitors, and she has been seen recently with the likes of Conor Mason from Nothing but Thieves, “Captain America” Chris Evans, and even Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs; many people don’t know that Taylor Swift was actually his rebound! While these courtships might’ve ended in Bad Romance, Kai has only turned them into fuel for her study sessions and extensive campus involvements. Other key sources of fuel for her include Dunkin coffee, peanut butter pretzels, and Rice Krispies. We couldn’t imagine Counterparts without Kai; she keeps us grounded, even as the notes she sings seem to take flight on stage. Be sure to hold on to your seats when she steps up to the mic tonight!

If you see a #girlboss walking down the street quickly saying “Eh?”, with her headphones in, you have probably encountered the rare Vicky “Parmesan” Ohlsson. You will often find her chilling in her cozy bedroom in Counterpartment, watching holiday movies much too early after cooking an elaborate meal. She is the hardest working person you will meet, devoting countless hours to Counterparts while still making time for her friends. Her piercing blue scandinavian eyes and flawless skin will leave you all envious.

It’s easy to instantly recognize Vicky - her wardrobe consists of 10 pairs of nearly identical jeans (she swears they are different) and an assortment of black, white, and beige shirts, resulting in an infinite outfit glitch. When she’s not doing her presidential duties, she loves chatting with her roommates after a long day, making early Trader Joe’s runs, and cracking subtle jokes. Her contagious laugh makes the whole room ugly laugh. Vicky’s spectacular voice will take All of Me and all of you by surprise, so get excited.

Member Bios Shreya “Catwoman” Balasubramanian is Counterpart’s fabulous assistant music director. She has magical arranging skills and makes sure that we sound our very best during rehearsal. Seriously, we don’t know what we would do without her. Shreya is also a style icon, coding whiz, and former wrestling champion—to say the least, she contains multitudes. You might have seen her singing with a band during homecoming, laughing contagiously, or crocheting up a storm. This gal is one of the kindest and funniest you’ll ever meet, and will always be there for her friends and fellow ‘Parts. She also has the voice of a literal angel, and we bet that she could easily outsing both Ariana Grande and Adele in a competition, trust us. Listen closely, her song will bring the house down and make the Skyfall tonight!

Who’s that person casually doing backflips on High Rise Field?

Why, it’s no other than Lee “Caribbean Third Eye” Reid, of course! If you know our Penn-Met-Gala-Alloy-Media-Founderneed-I-go-on entrepreneur extraordinaire, you know that she’s low key a prodigLEE at everything ranging from film to gymnastics to authoring children’s books. She even wrote an entire arrangement for our set without being able to read sheet music, beLEEve it or not! Our favorite RA is always there when you need a deep philosophical conversation, shoulder to cry on, or a very specific and incredibLEE out of pocket joke. She has a heart of absolute gold and is always her friends’ biggest cheerLEEder. And don’t even think about making the mistake of SLEEping on her angelic, show-stopping voice. I’ll stop making puns now so you can finalLEE hear her sing!

Member Bios Who’s that gorgeous, effortlessly cool girl walking on campus with a slouchy green leather bag, a flowy skirt and chunky platform boots? Oh, it’s Sarahbelle “Donatella Versace” Kim. Our resident fashion mastermind and artistic visionary never fails to catch everyone’s attention with her composed and calm demeanor. A woman of many talents, you might spot Sarahbelle performing one of her originals while playing her bass, making delicious gourmet meals for her friends, crafting unique and creative pieces of jewelry, or even singing tenor on many of our arrangements. When she isn’t spending time at Herzog or hanging out on the porch at Counterpartment, you can spot Sarahbelle at the design building, working hard on her design minor. While Sarahbelle gives it her ALL in her duet tonight, we are sure that you will fall in love with her incredible voice.

If you hear a dm-ba-dm or an “AYOO”, it’s probably Julian “Tour de France” Ha. When he isn’t busy leading his MUSE committee or hard at work in Excel (big business analytics guy), he is hanging out with his friends or his cat, Nala. Julian will often show up to rehearsal with a cool outfit and a self-made Wilcaf latte in hand, ready to absolutely nail the bass part every time (apparently he’s a simp for the AMD). You will never see him without his classic black headphones, but with his good music taste, it makes sense. Julian’s smile and energy bring so much to the rehearsal room and beyond; the group is very lucky to have him. We hope you’re as excited as us to hear Julian tonight - don’t tell him to break a leg though (his hand has already had enough). Make sure to savor every moment of his phenomenal solo, because although you will want an encore, All Things End.

Member Bios A ray of sunshine at every Sunday morning rehearsal, you can find Celia “Omigod” Ginzburg casually tearing up Locust at Mach 1 before you can even say “hi”. Whether its falling out of an Uber in front of a group of fraternity brothers, email negotiating her way into a 60% discount on a moving service, or giving us the play-by-play of her relationship (you know who you are!!!) we can always count on Ceelz’s weekly shares at rehearsal being electric. Not only is she our weekly storyteller, but she is also our resident mathlete, slaying a math minor. If that doesn’t show her resilience enough (shoutout Penn math dept), her dedication to the group does. She’s consistently an inspiring example of singing talent and discipline, and for that we are all grateful.

Prepare to be blown away by her beautiful voice, we know you’ll be crooning Oh! Darling! long after the show-stopping performance she’ll give.

You can catch Grace “Gracie Gurl” Gramins quickly traveling around campus heading from rehearsal to WHAMB to PIIC with a red solo cup filled with coffee. Knowing basically everyone on campus, don’t be surprised if you see her socializing with just about anyone. It’s not uncommon to see her working out or going on a run while multitasking and fullinging her Publicity Manager duties. Not only does she have such stylish outfits coming in with a new look every rehearsal, but she never forgets to remind us how much she loves CP (we love you!). Her upbeat personality wakes us up on our Sunday morning rehearsals and we can always count on her to put a smile on our faces. We eagerly await to hear about her latest stories, always beginning with, “Guys, you’ll never believe what happened last night…” Our lovely Grace is a talented songwriter, arranger, and overall wonderful musician who never ceases to impress us. We Don’t think you’ll be able to Talk Anymore after you hear her beautiful voice!

Member Bios She can do it all. From being an active member of countless clubs on campus, having a spectacularly beautiful voice, as well as breathtakingly long hair, Shreya “CP Fairy Godmother” Krishnan is the full package. Not only is Shreya an amazing academic and leader, she is also the kindest and most generous person you will ever meet. When she isn't busy being a Wharton baddie, you will find Shreya hard at work as our resident Business Manager, planning our tours, and bringing sweet treats to everyone at rehearsal. We know that you will love Shreya’s performance (and her first ever co-arrangement!!) as much as we love her. After you hear Shreya sing, we are sure that you will not be able to stop TALKing about it.

When he’s not explaining to you what NETS is (Networked & Social Systems Engineering btw) or buying you a croissant after you dropped yours on the way to rehearsal, Brandon “Frat Bro that listens to Taylor Swift“ Tsai can be found putting the “ba dum” in “ba dum dum pow”. Our #1 Penn Taiwanese Society representative, colloquially known as Junior, is the backbone of our ensemble. A firecracker with the most contagious smile, he is our hype-man-in-residence, and never fails to make sure that everyone in the room is having the best day possible. We are so thankful for Brandon and his many talents, and we're sure that The Way he Sings Tonight will make you love him just as much as we do.

Member Bios Alain “Hill College House” Welliver is a highly cherished member of the community. His community activism also extends to being a committed volunteer and mentor to youth in Philly and being a straight-up great guy overall. You can find him (literally) running around at almost any hour, most likely with a Chipotle bowl or several dining hall to-go containers in hand. As a young boy, he accidentally ate an entire piano (yikes!) and survived.

Despite his fears, he went on to be an incredible pianist and use his internal piano to give us our starting pitches and make faces if we go a literal quarter of a semitone flat while singing. Oh yeah, he also sings. Well, in fact (ba dum tss!). His song is sweet and his stage presence utterly magnetic. Alain is the most kind, supportive, and resilient guy we know, always going out of his way to make everyone around him feel loved and cared for. We could go on forever, but what we’re trying to say is we Go Crazy for Alain, and surely the crowd will too tonight!

Introducing Isaac “Do You Know A Brother?” Tang! Due to a recent promotion (or demotion depending on who you ask) from Tenor to Baritone, you can now catch him crooning lower notes than ever before! If you didn’t already know, Isaac is our resident loverboy, and we wouldn't be surprised if a few of you reading this were invited by him on Hinge. He may be popular with the ladies, but he’s an even better friend; the genuine care and support he lends to those he cares about lifts up everyone around him. We’re constantly inspired by his passion for creating music, and how he engages with and learns from all those he surrounds himself with. So get ready to Get Lost in Isaac’s Voice tonight in his soulful rendition of a cult-favorite by Shawn Mendez.

Member Bios Do you ever need someone to brighten up your day? Well, look no further than Olivia “ ” Goldfinger. Attracting boys left and right, Liv is the bubbliest girl in the room, constantly sharing exciting stories that revive the entire group during shares (shoutout frat date night sagas). A math baddie, you can frequently see her slaying Locust as she treks to DRL (aka the trenches), and you know she is breezing through the Penn math department’s puzzles of problems all while uplifting everyone around her. Now that we’ve met Liv, there’s no going back… we cannot imagine doing a gig without her, and we would miss her “we slayyyed guys” texts too much to go on. We can’t wait for you all to hear her powerhouse voice’s debut on the IGT stage, and we can promise you there will be no Bad Romance tonight after she takes the stage.

Zachary “Gumped-Up!!!!!” Kirchhoff is one of Counterparts’ newest and most beautiful additions this semester. We knew he was a star from the moment he walked into the audition room.

Critics have said about Zachary– “He just has an indestructible quality; unrivaled tenacity,” “I hear Zac is the coolest international student from Tulsa Oklahoma,” or “wow counterparts has really gone global.” Other notable descriptions from interviews include charming, witty, handsome, silly, courageous, captivating and GUMPED UP!!!!!!!!! If you can’t find him but need to, he’s probably out on the streets at 4 am or in a sleep-deprivation induced coma. Otherwise, he’s onstage with Mask and Wig fulfilling his lifelong dream of pretending to be a fully conversational German baby with an attitude or screaming about ~dirty~ chais. FYI, Don’t mess with him unless he’s had his daily monster energy drink. We’re serious. You aren’t ready– Zachary is classically trained and will steal the show with his beatbox debut and duet with Brandon Tsai. Be prepared to fall in love with The Way [they] Look (and sound) Tonight!

Member Bios Aidan (AOC) O’Connell is truly a one of a kind guy. In his natural habitat, he is best seen on locust with his sock+birkenstock combo on deck, ready to plunder any math exam coming his way. Once you get him talking, you will magically be lead into a political x questionable meme x A’capella conversation for the ages. Aidan’s secret talent’s include fulfilling any and all emo rock band needs you may have, smiling constantly, giving everyone “Amnesia” with his insane voice, and genuinely being such a joy to be around. Aidan’s listening ear, and well thought advice is truly the solution to any and all problems that you may face (it’s true we can guarantee it). We simply cant Skate around how talented this guy is. Be prepared for his voice to “slide it’s way over” onto your favorite’s list.
