LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to the Counterparts' 2024 Spring Show! We have had a great year and just returned from our Spring Tour in Amsterdam Our album Birdland has met with great success, and certain tracks have received more than 30,000+ streams. Additionally, Counterparts is gaining more than 3,000+ listeners a month on Spotify. If you haven't streamed it, please listen to it on Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube! We also had our inaugural retreat and are looking forward to continuing this tradition in the future The spring show is a beautiful culmination of Counterparts' hard work, commitment, and talent. Thank you to our wonderful Music Director, Shreya Balasubramanian, and the incredible board - Viktoria Ohlsson, Grace Gramins, Brandon Tsai, Olivia Goldfinger, and Zachary Kirchhoff. This show would not have been possible without your efforts. Thank you to our family, friends, alumni, and Counterparts fans for your continued support. We are also celebrating our amazing seniors - Megan Higgins, Brandon Kanell, and Kai Kelly, who will take the stage one last time with Counterparts. It has been an honor to serve as President of this incredible team Please enjoy the show!
- Shreya KrishnanLETTER FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR
Welcome to the Spring 2024 Counterparts show “Counterclockwise”! Thank you to everyone who came out to hear us perform tonight. It has been a great honor to lead this group of kind and talented musicians. For my whole college experience, Counterparts has been a consistent home to return to. There’s something so familial and powerful about bringing songs to life together, and I hope that you feel even a small part of that while listening to our performance. Thank you to all my Counterparts for making my role so incredibly fulfilling. Not only do I get to enjoy the product of our hard work at rehearsals, I get to make lifelong memories with some of my best friends. I want to extend a special thank you to Shreya K. and Board for being amazing friends and leaders, and for all the past Music Directors who have imposed all their wisdom on me. I am so proud of the work that we have done this semester and excited to share it with you all Enjoy the show!

Megan “She’s a runner she’s a trackstar” Higgins is everyone’s favorite musical genius. Megan possesses the lore for a variety of subjects - including but not limited to collegiate a cappella, the American presidency, and reality TV (fun fact she got a callback for Survivor). She can be found at Counterpartment, making her hyperfixation breakfast and gabbing with her roommates or hanging out with her lin and friends in Friars You must be wondering how Megan has such flawless skin and luscious hair, or even what her ethnicity is (she’s Italian) Megan is the most compassionate friend you will meet You can count on her to be there for you at the drop of a hat and most importantly, to commit to the bit no matter what Whether she’s tearing it up on a run, in the lab cooking up the most incredible arrangement you’ve ever heard, or singing with Penn Jazz, rest assured she is slaying. We will miss her very much, but as long as she has her stellar personality and bulletproof Denim Jacket, we know she will excel in all her future ambitions. Please enjoy Megan’s final performance in Counterparts!
Do you hear that voice spontaneously harmonizing? It’s Brandon “Let’s Go To the Porch!” Kanell! Brandon is one of the silliest Counterparts At any rehearsal, you may witness him taking off his pants (to reveal a pair of shorts) or waxing poetic about how crazy the concept of the moon is Outside of rehearsal, he can be found crushing a morning workout, vigorously composing his epic IR thesis, or demolishing anyone in a game of Super Smash Bros. It’s heartbreaking to face that this is Brandon’s final show after years of gracing audiences’ ears with his silky baritone and unmatched stage presence. His radiant smile, relentless humor, and perfect curls have all of us in Counterparts wrapped around his finger, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We love you forever Brandon, take us to the Copacabana!

If you ever happen upon Counterpart’s most beautiful, talented, and intelligent doctor (to-be) Kai “Oh, that’s not…” Kelly, DO NOT ASK her what book she’s reading. If you dare take a peak inside whatever page she’s giggling at, her chorus of cackles will echo as you leave thinking, “Oh, that’s not…” (a “normal” book). Kai “Oh, that’s not…” Kelly is just as *spicy* as the books she reads. Her runs and riffs are scalding hot, while her passion for medicine burns bright. We swear we’ve seen her burn holes into her MCAT prepbook just by looking at it However, her fire has a warmth and softness to it as well, as Kai is the most compassionate and kind person in the world Ever-so-wise, she always knows the right thing to say to cheer you up, motivate you, or just make you laugh Her drive and ambition as a leader and singer are truly admirable and we’re so lucky to have her When she’s singing, you’ll be thinking, “Hey I feel like Something’s Got a Hold On Me” And the answer is yes. Cause the one and only Kai Kelly has got a hold on your heart. PS: speaking of hearts… if you’re single and hot, DM @Kaikell01 (serious inquiries only)

When you smell a delicious homemade carbonara or pot of chili wafting out from the Counterpartment kitchen, you already know that Vicky “That’s in 3 minutes pookie” Olsson isn’t too far away If her piercing blue Scandinavian eyes and 100% natural blonde hair haven’t caught your eye on Locust, look for the girl taking lightning speed steps at a 45° angle and that’s our Vicky! Our easy breezy business baddie is the darling of Sweden and, as we’ve recently learned, queen of the American School of The Hague. She unapologetically will make a baked potato at literally any hour of the day and never fails to end her silly goofs with a cheeky “hehe.” As our former president and current rizzness – sorry, business – manager, Vicky has time and again put her all into making this group operate, and we couldn’t love her more. Come on, let’s waste no more time and let Vicky sing!

If you’re looking for a buddy with whom to crack open a frosty glass of milk at 10 PM, look no further than Shreya “haghaghaga ” Balasubramanian. Our newly-minted MD can arrange like a champ and is certifiably #cracked at anything CIS-related (okay woman in STEM!!!) Other special skills include randomly finding the tastiest restaurants in Amsterdam at a moment’s notice, yapping with her CP roommates at all hours of the day, teaching high schoolers how to beatbox, and SABSing at the vibiest coffee shops in Philly We are so grateful to have such a talented and capable leader in Shreya, and this show could not have happened without her hard work Make sure you grab a tissue, because your eyes are sure to get a little Misty after hearing her sing!
Lee “En qué medida estamos?” Reid can do it all From backflips and the splits to incredible vocal runs to being the best RA Lee’s artistic talents span from designing our latest album’s (Birdland-stream now!) cover to recording our promo videos. Her goofy and fun personality brightens up our rehearsals. Lee’s fabulous style and outfits will take your breath away. You can always count on Lee to be there for you and give you great advice. A wonderful mentor to us, we are very lucky to have Lee in our group. You will need some Agua de Beber after you hear Lee’s amazing voice tonight!

Sarahbelle “Where do you get your clothes from?” Kim is our resident fashionista Her groundbreaking style and keen eye mean you’ll be hard pressed to find Sarahbelle off her game Her usual activities include, but are certainly not by any means in any way limited to, writing music reminiscent of Marceline from Adventure Time, gathering intelligence for her new magazine (@Swimming mag), running shoots for the WALK, journaling and doodling (beautifully, might we add), and talking about rowing with Alain. Sarahbelle is also a transfer from Brandeis– meaning that she has impressively made such a profound campus impact in a year shorter than most. She’s far more than just her involvements and talents, though. She’s thoughtful, inquisitive, loving, and a true friend to all. Our Sarahbelle is beyond impressive, and her voice will have you leaving our Spring show feeling all the Summertime Sadness!

From making a bomb coffee, or slapping his bro’s legs in rehearsal, King Julian Ha is always seems to have a smile on his face. His kind and caring nature make him a fixture in the CP family, not to mention his INSANE bass vocals. We cannot talk about Julian, without mentioning his fantastic parenting skills. As father, to the one and only Nala the cat, Julian has raised his cat to be a strong independent woman. One thing is undeniable about Julian, whenever ANYONE is in need of a hug, someone to talk to, or someone to have their back he is one of the first people to stand by their side We are beyond honored to have the pleasure of sharing the stage with Julian, and are sure that “Agua” will be coming out of your eyes when he serenades you with his voice

Grace “Corepower” Gramins is the it girl on campus Walking down Locust with her sunglasses, iced coffee in hand, and a bright smile, she Lights up every room that she is in While she isn’t hanging out with her friends in her sorority or lounging on the high rise fields with her Counterparts, she is writing songs and jamming out to them on her guitar (stream Falling available on all streaming platforms!). But despite her busy schedule of being a finance girlie, she will ALWAYS wake up for 8 am yoga no matter what. Grace’s bubbly energy is infectious and she has been crushing it as our AMD. She was definitely born to be on stage, so sit back and enjoy her stellar opening performance!
With a heart of gold and long locs that dance in the wind, the verdict is still out on whether Shreya “Gold Star” Krishnan was made by Disney itself Our guess is yes, but that’s probably because she gives us candy and lovely notes regularly at rehearsal like the fairy godmother that she is We are so grateful for our dear Shreya because she is as good of a leader as she is a singer (ie. realllllly amazing). When our fearless leader isn’t busy masterminding our show, you’ll catch her in meetings with Wharton Council, excelling in her classes, and arranging songs for cp (she arranged her song this semester!). There is nothing she could possibly do to make us like her more and you’ll soon find that out soon too!

Picture the most charming, thoughtful, well-dressed guy you’ve ever met. Now kick him up 100 notches and you’ve got the one and only Alain “HEY!” Welliver! Alain’s likes are philosophical conversation, Chipotle, trains, crunchy chords, a well-timed knee slap, and a hearty chuckle. His dislikes are when Counterparts is microtones off-pitch, when his meticulouslycurated Notion workspace isn’t updated, suboptimal code, and inefficient public transit networks When he’s not sleeping or making the world a better place as a community builder, he can be found singing the purest tenor melodies, playing the sweetest piano pieces, or simply wearing the sickest turtleneck you’ve ever seen To be blessed by a warm hug from Alain is as sweet as when A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square, and you are sure to feel that warmth tonight

Brandon “Guys I’m almost done wearing a suit” Tsai will ensure that every single person knows what NETS stands for He always looks out for us and cares for each member His witty and sarcastic humor keeps our rehearsals engaging and fun Brandon is such a dedicated and valuable member of Counterparts and we love him so much You will be enthralled when you hear his deep bass voice. Although, don’t be fooled as he is a true soprano ;). Now sit back, relax, and get ready to hear our wonderful Junior! You will be crying a river after you hear his amazing voice!

Woah Who’s that heartthrob? Oh, that’s Isaac “Money Gang ” Tang Our beautiful CARA Nominated artist never has an off day with his fits and is Counterpart’s #1 suave little pookie bear Catch Isaac busting out his moves on the dancefloor or dabbing in rehearsal Outside of Counterparts, you can find him snuggled up with his roommates watching cozy movies. Our newest Wharton finance bro will rizz you up in a full suit. Sit down and buckle up because you’ll be in Misery if you miss any second of Isaac’s beautiful voice tonight.
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Aidan “Well Yes!” O’Connell and his beautiful tenor voice flying above the ensemble. Bruno Mars even sent Aidan a cease and desist after last semester’s Skate performance. Aidan has been on a journey– from two other a cappella groups in undergrad, to singing in the stairwell, to being onstage with Penn Counterparts today. Aidan means BIG business in rehearsal, keeping us laser-focused by cracking jokes and slapping knees nonstop If you see Aidan at the gym, just know he’s been getting ready for his upcoming WWE debut Aidan versus the physical manifestation of MATH 3600: Real Analysis; he’s already got a sponsor deal from you guessed it! Vineyard Vines Some more fun facts about Aidan: he likes long walks on the beach and working at the Penn Wharton Budget Model on gender equity That’s hot. If that wasn’t enough for you, you should know that Aidan is one of the most caring, sincere, and humble people we know. He will always be there for you when you need a shoulder to lean on, a study buddy, or someone to talk about the intricacies of this human life. We're in Misery waiting to hear him sing– and get ready to know why!

Despite hailing from one of the coldest metropolitan areas in the country, this newb is one of the warmest, kindest individuals we know Olivia “Down Bad” Goldfinger is our favorite Aritzia brand ambassador, Tri-Delt pledge, and Whar–oh wait sorry– CAS baddie She is also our newest publicity manager, leveraging deep learning, big data analysis, and cutting-edge SEO to bring Counterparts to the top of the Penn A Cappella social hierarchy. Pret-in-hand, she can charm even the coldest locust-walking, Penn-face clad student. Jokes aside though, we really can’t imagine a Counterparts without her. Her bubbly, kind demeanor is capable of sweeping us–and our siblings–off our feet. She’ll cheer you up when you’re having a bad day, always make sure you feel encouraged and confident, and is always there to debrief when things get crazy. And on top of it all, she’s got a stunning, smooth voice, so that’s pretty cool We know you won’t be feeling Lonely after seeing her on-stage tonight, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

IThere are some people who believe that time travel doesn’t exist Unfortunately for them, that just means they haven’t met Zach “Lord Farquaad” Kirchoff, and that is very unfortunate indeed How, you ask? Zach’s angelic voice rivals that of classics like Sinatra and Nat King Cole if they were from Oklahoma and lived in Gregory College House His silky moviestar hair and massive smile light up every room he is in When we were blessed with our little (over 6’) blond newborn Zach this fall, our world was turned technicolor. Which is fitting because his glee and care feel like a pal you’d find on your path to see the Wizard in the magical world of Oz. When he’s not on our stage singing his heart out, you can probably find him absolutely EATING in a Mask and Wig skit. His charisma, charm, and dedication shine through, and we cannot wait to watch our Nightingale soar tonight!
