Trial To Stop Public Access To Thetford Police Station

Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner Lorne Green said: "The link between Norfolk Constabulary and its communities is absolutely critical and it is crucial people feel connected to their police force. I also recognise the need for Norfolk Constabulary to innovate and look for efficiencies to make best use of their resources to protect the frontline. This pilot is a welcome example of positive partnership working and I await the results with interest. I would urge people to feed back their thoughts and experiences.”

Proposals have recently been announced by Norfolk Constabulary for a six month trial that will run from the end of September in Thetford and will involve library staff signposting customers to police services, while also helping them complete online self-reporting forms.

Library staff will also be able to help customers with online enquiries about lost and found items; however members of the public will not be able to take these to the libraries.For the duration of the trial, the current Police Public Enquiry Office (PEO) in Thetford will temporarily close. Members of the public who require an emergency response from Norfolk Constabulary should call 999 or dial 101 for less-urgent crime reporting or to speak to a specific officer or member of staff.

Norfolk Constabulary say the views of the public are one of the key success measures being evaluated during the pilot and each member of the public who uses the library service for a police related matter will be asked to complete a short satisfaction survey.

A special Safer Thetford Action Group (STAG) meeting takes place on Wednesday 14th September 10 – 10.30am at King’s House and a further chance for views to be heard will be on Monday 19th September 6.30 – 7.30pm as part of Barnham Action Group’s meeting at Fulmerston Church when Police Commissioner Lorne Green will also be in attendance.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey said: "The purpose of this pilot is to retain our public enquiry service in a more efficient, collaborative way. We are keen to retain such a service despite facing further significant budget reductions to funding. This pilot forms part of our work to realise these savings through more efficient working practices with our partners.

However, the proposals have not been welcomed by all. Chris Harvey, Town Councillor said “I am very disappointed in Norfolk Constabulary and the Police Commissioner. There has been no formal consultation about these proposals with anyone in Thetford including Councillors. We first found out about these plans in the local press which is not good enough.

Local residents are rightly concerned about this”.

Out & About Thetford

St Mary’s bids farewell to a much loved Canon. Since his arrival in Thetford 11 years ago,

as Father Mathew, Canon Mathew George has become a much loved member of the community.

Originally from southern India, Fr Mathew is taking a sabbatical at the Jesuit School of Theology of the Santa Clara University, Berkeley. On his return in the new year, he will be appointed another parish in East Anglia. The parish came together to wish Fr Mathew farewell at a garden party with traditional Southern Indian food & local ice cream. Fr Matthew was presented with a collection from the parish, a album of photos recording his time in Thetford and a crucifix with an engraved plate as a token of appreciation. John White, Chair of PPC, presented the gifts and commented on the high regard Fr Mathew was held in, his attention to detail, the work on the fabric of St Mary’s Church and that Fr Mathew was the first marathon running Priest in the Parish! In his response Fr Mathew said “It has been a great 11 years, I have been loved, appreciated, cared for. I did try my best, God gave me a great parish but the time comes to move on. I will really miss you all very much.”

During the afternoon a presentation was made to the TCA for young people’s activities. Last year the parish undertook a fundraising incentive called Face Alive, aimed at supporting Youth Projects. Speaking about the donation Canon Matthew George said “We are a poor parish, but we are delighted to give this small gift to the children of Thetford” Andy Richardson, Chair of TCA explained that the ball park has been instrumental in feeding young players into the local football teams. The aim of TCA is to engage with young people and give them positive TCA presentation from Fr Matthew activities.

Our lucky winner Lena, enjoyed a fun packed weekend at this year’s family friendly WhiteNoise Festival. Now in its 3rd year at Euston Park, the festival celebrates all things VW & the arts. 1000s of visitors enjoyed a weekend of camping, outdoor theatre, live music, activities, alongside a special programme for the very youngest festival visitors.

Families enjoy a Junkaloo Day! Fly tipping Officer, Barbara Bysouth invited About Thetford to join in Recycling Family Fun Day organised as part of the West Thetford Fly Tipping Project. The Charles Burrell Centre field was a hive of activity as families created junk models, decorated flowerpots, enjoyed games such as tin can skittles and swapped old toys & books. For green fingered participants the compost tent provided an opportunity to get close up to a wormery, learn how to make leaf mould compost and discover ways of reusing garden waste. Barbara’s next recycling event & swap shop station will be at the Charles Burrell Open Day on September 4th, Staniforth Road, Thetford IP24 3LH. Award Winning Criminologist comes to Thetford Claudine Duberry,

author of Guns, Gangs & the implications for Social Workers, visited the Charles Burrell Centre recently with local businessman Ryan Windsor. Ryan is mentoring Claudine as she develops Taking Positive Steps, the result of many years working in Youth Offending and alongside the Metropolitan Police in London.

During her visit Claudine talked about how her approach can cross over into community life, building on the idea of rebuilding the ‘village’ and creating a tight-knit community around children. Claudine has long challenged the theories around working & engaging with young people who display behaviours that society perceives as anti-social. Her first discussion with About Thetford was what is a ‘gang’? If it’s a group of people with shared ideology, then surely the team at About Thetford could be termed a gang — however the magazine is not perceived by the local community as anti social (at least we hope not!) and as a diverse community how do we look after our young people? Through Taking Positive Steps Claudine is currently developing programmes for yr 1 & 2, and 5 & 6 children and Parent to Parent sessions, something that the community of Thetford would definitely benefit from. www.takingpositvesteps.org.uk

Thetford U3A Entertains Its Members

On the fourth Thursday of most months, around 150 (just under half the membership) of Thetford University of the Third Age come together to be informed and entertained by various talented speakers. Don’t let the word “University” put you off. The U3A is really for anyone who is no longer in full-time employment, or spending all their time looking after home and family.

And it’s great fun.

Recently we had an amazing presentation from Jenni Gibbs about her journey to discover rural Turkey, where she found a new home and new love. She brought with her articles hand made by her Turkish neighbours.

Evelyn, one of our members said “Jenny’s was such an inspiring adventure. And I just had to buy a scarf and necklace because they are so beautiful”.

If you want to know more about Thetford U3A, come along to our free Open Day on Thursday 22 September at the Carnegie Room, starting at 1.45 pm.

Another talk by Mike Grillo transported a raptured audience back to the late 50's and 60's with music from Del Shannon and Roy Orbison. It was so nice to see members tapping their feet along with the music, mouthing the words of the songs and jiggling in their chairs. It was both informative and nostalgic.

Nursing Home Fees – Your Choice?

Paying for nursing home fees is an emotive subject.

Fiona Ashmead, Partner at Rudlings Wakelam, talks you through the options.

S

ome people feel they do not want their hard earned assets “taken” to pay for their care and want the state to pay. Others feel quite strongly that they want the choice of where they receive care and want to retain their assets to be able to have that choice.

Whilst this can work it does need careful planning. It is important to realise that in completing any financial assessment form an individual will be asked not only about their current assets but also enquiries will be made into assets which they may previously have owned and given away.

Whichever feeling applies to you you need to make sure you retain the right to your choice. Family members do sometimes try to interfere with a parent’s decision to keep what they see as “their” inheritance intact.

Deliberate Deprivation

What are the limits?

The basic issue is that if you have assets worth more than £23,250.00 you will be paying for your own care irrespective of your wishes. There is then a sliding scale between £23,250 and £14,250 where a contribution is made. Below £14,250.00 the state will pay.

If it can be shown that you have deliberately deprived yourself of assets to gain a benefit then you will be treated as still owning them and will not be entitled to state funding. Whether this deprivation can be shown will be dependent on the intention at the time of the transfer. If you have already had a medical prognosis indicating that you will require residential/ nursing care then the intention will generally be inferred that you were deliberately depriving yourself of your assets to gain a benefit unless another very good reason can be shown.

What is taken into account?

In carrying out a financial assessment generally all your assets and income are looked at. This raises what is generally the most contentious point and this is the family home for which the majority of people is their most valuable asset. Frequently as solicitors we find that we are approached by the children of the couple wanting to have the ownership of the family home transferred away from their parents in its entirety generally into their names so that it is not taken into account when assessing the capital of the parents.

It is also worth considering in relation to other monies and savings that certain insurance backed bonds will also fall into the category of assets which are disregarded for capital provided that they have been invested in such bonds prior to any medical diagnosis so as to avoid any deliberate deprivation argument arising.

Life Interest or Family Trusts It is possible to put the family home into a Life Interest Trust during your lifetime taking care with the timing again, but with the home disregard rules this may not be appropriate.

A preferable route and one which is not susceptible to query, so far, by the local authorities, is putting the share in the property of the first spouse to die into a Life Interest Trust for the second spouse to continue to benefit from living in it but with the underlying half interest being held in Trust. This Trust effectively “ring-fences” the first spouse’s share so that if the surviving spouse should need residential care it is only the surviving spouse’s share in the house can be taken into account in any assessment.

What are the costs involved in Nursing Home Fees?

Nursing home fees are high, they range from between £650.00 per week to £1,500.00 per week depending on your needs and the area of the country in which you are based.

It is precisely for this reason that careful planning is needed either to lessen the burden or ensure that you have adequate funds to support what will be a £30,000 pa bill.

If only one person needed care the house would remain “intact” for the family to inherit. Careful consideration needs to be taken into account and the circumstances looked at before any alternative arrangement is considered. A qualifying relative can be a person’s partner, spouse, civil partner, a member of the family over 60, that person’s child under 18 or a person who is incapacitated.

Giving away the Family Home In addition if you give your house away to your children then you can also make yourself vulnerable for different reasons. Once the transfer of the property to your children has taken place it is their asset. Anything that then happens in their life such as divorce, death or financial problems will have a knock on effect as the house will be treated as theirs and you could find yourself homeless as a result of same.

This could apply even if you have reserved the right to live in the property.

Disregards Regarding Capital on Assessment It is also important to be aware that where a couple own a house then if one of them needed

One further myth needs to be dispelled.

People do become extremely concerned about a house needing to be sold to fund care. This is not correct. The local authority can put a charge against the house if for example a person needing care owned a house which was continuing to provide a home for someone who did not qualify for the house to be disregarded. There is no requirement for the property to be sold until the person receiving the care dies and then the charge would be repayable at that stage.

As can be seen it is important to seek advice based on your wishes prior to taking any decisions.

HERITAGE OPEN DAY September means Heritage Open Day and this year Thetford was one of only 6 towns and cities to be part of the National Launch in London. So what are Heritage Open days about? Each year thousands of volunteers across the country organise over 5000 events

to celebrate our fantastic history, architecture and culture. Doors are flung open to allow the public in to see hidden places and try out new experiences. This year the events run from Thursday 8th to Sun 11th September all of which are FREE to explore.

The Local Property Market In 2016

By Andrew Overman, Chilterns Estate & Letting Agent 2016 has been unprecedented in the local housing market. We began the year still feeling the “A11 effect” as the dualling of this major route has led to an increase in demand from buyers out of the area, who now consider the region to be ‘commutable’ and attractively priced. This coupled with Stamp Duty changes for investment buyers and second home owners (which came into force on 1st April) saw a surge in demand, and consequently prices, for properties in the first quarter. More recently, the referendum and the Bank of England reduction in the base rate of interest to 0.25%, a record low, have also played their part.

It’s no secret that there are fewer properties available on the market and that leads to fierce competition between agents, some who will inflate valuation figures or reduce their fee levels, to compete to ‘win’ your business. It still amazes me after 23 years in the industry how many sellers are influenced by these tactics. In my view an agent should be judged on the service they offer, results they achieve and the value of these to sellers in terms of a ‘stress free’ sale and the time taken to achieve it. Here are a list of questions every seller should be asking of the agents they invite into their home.

7 essential questions to ask your estate agent: 1) What is your list to sale ratio? i.e. what percentage of the properties you list to the market actually sell?

6) Can I have a list / contact details for your most recent clients? Estate agents who consistently deliver an exceptional service should be able to provide a means of contacting their previous clients, so that you can investigate how they felt whilst dealing with them.

Do not accept written testimonials.

7) What investment do you make in training and development? Sadly, the estate agency industry is not regulated and therefore has a ‘low barrier of entry’.

To consistently deliver the very best levels of advice and service for clients, an agent should be able to demonstrate their investment in training and development for their staff.

Remember the cheapest agent is the agent who achieves the best possible price for your home, not necessarily the one who offers the cheapest fee or a flattering appraisal figure.

2) What is your average “days on market”? i.e. on average how long does it take from first listing a property to the market, to agreeing a sale (subject to contract) and then completing the transaction

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club September 2016 Our September show takes place on Saturday 3rd this month - just as you should be receiving your September About Thetford. If you receive your copy in time and want to come along the show starts from 1pm in Kings House Gardens.

Whether your gardening has resulted in something for the show or not, this is a wonderful time for crops and allotment owners and their friends and relations should be eating well all month. If anyone has potatoes still in the ground, it would be wise to lift them now as the slugs will be attacking soon. As land is cleared and cleaned of all remaining weeds you may like to put in crops that will overwinter – spinach beet, Japanese radish and onion, certain types of broad bean. You can continue to sow fast growing salad crops and carrots too. Otherwise thoroughly cleaning the ground of weeds and spreading organic material will help towards next year – and you will be planning for that already I’m sure.

Alliums seem to survive our dry conditions well too and their pom-poms are a jolly addition to a less formal area.

The lawn may have taken a hammering over the summer so this is a good time to scarify and aerate at least the area of most wear. Summer lawn feed encourages lush growth so use an autumn feed which is high in potassium to keep the grass in good heart through the winter. This is the last month for applying lawn weed-killer if you have problems. (Does anyone ever have a problem-free lawn? I think not!) This is a good time for creating a new lawn, turf or seed, as rain should be more frequent towards the end of the month and the temperatures are cooling.

The meeting this month is the Club AGM and Harvest Supper. This is an opportunity to hear about the successes and problems of the club in the past year, vote for and meet the committee and join in with plans for the future. If you have any radical ideas to put forward or would like to serve on the committee it is helpful to let the Chairman, Brian Farrell know in advance - email is bgf6777@gmail.com. The AGM is at the URC at 6.30pm so that there is plenty of time afterwards for good conversation over a tasty meal. All members welcome. Sue Pilgrim

Autumn is the time to prune plum and peach trees after they have fruited. They are more prone to disease if pruned in the winter so this is a job to get out of the way early. The canes of summer raspberries should be cut out now they have finished fruiting – hopefully you are now picking autumn raspberries. You could perhaps store the canes to provide support for peas next spring.

If you are moving your strawberry bed, the new plants from runners should be established now and you can get them started.

In the flower garden you can start to divide perennials and to plant spring bulbs. The less time bulbs are sitting about in a packet drying out the better and if you buy now you will have the widest choice. The packet should have planting instructions but the general rule is to plant in a hole that is 2-3 times as deep as the height of the bulb so a standard daffodil would go in a hole 5 or 6 inches deep. If you have a windy site, miniature daffodils are a good investment. They come again very reliably and make an early splash of gold ahead of the taller types. If you put some in pots you can move them

Wild Walk in Thetford with the RSPB Why not join us on our next monthly wildlife walk starting near where the Captain Mainwaring statue usually is on Bridge Street in Thetford on Sunday 11th September at 11 am? The walk lasts about 90 minutes but recently our walkers have wanted to go on a bit longer; it’s down to you! We’ll be taking a trail through some of the fantastic wildlife habitat in Thetford, looking for birds and other wildlife.

Whether you are an expert or beginner, adult or family with budding young naturalists, all are welcome.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Wear stout footwear, wrap up for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them. These wildlife walks are free but donations are welcome! There are ducks, geese, and swans on the river, and if we are lucky we might even see a kingfisher or grey wagtail. The walks are turning out to be a delightful, informal way of getting out and engaging with nature.

The Battle of the Somme and Tanks In early 1916, in a secret area just outside Thetford, a new weapon was being tested; a weapon that would change the war. The weapon is still known by its code name – tank. This new weapon was first deployed during the Battle of the Somme in September 1916 – a 100 years ago. To commemorate this anniversary Thetford Remembers is hosting a series of events at Ancient House and Dad’s Army Museum.

On Thursday 8 September Richard Knight is giving an illustrated talk on the development of Tanks during First World War. He will reveal how they broke the German front line. The talk will be accompanied by a display of uniforms, equipment and weapons. The talk is free but must be booked in advance.

On Saturday 10 September family can learn more about Thetford’s secret weapon – the tank at Ancient House’s hands on Terrific Tanks day. Visitors will meet a member of the Heavy Section Machine Gun Corps (later the Tank Corps), hear about life driving a tank in battle, handle real objects from the past and get creative with some First World War crafts.

On Saturday 24 September visitor can meet costumed characters and discover what life was like for those at home in Thetford in 1916 and also for the soldiers on the Western Front. One of the soldiers who witnessed the first use of tanks in battle on 15 September 1916 a hundred years ago was a 20 year old Arnold Ridley. Ridley would later visit Thetford to play Dad’s Army’s Private Godfrey. He recalled his first sight of the new weapon: “We in the ranks had never heard of tanks. We were told that there was some sort of secret weapon and then we saw this thing go up the right hand corner of Delville Wood. I saw this strange and cumbersome machine emerge from the shattered shrubbery and proceed slowly down the slope towards Flers.” Also this month visitors can travel back in time to experience the most popular film of 1916 – The Battle of the Somme. The Battle of the Somme was the first feature length documentary about war. In the year of its release it was watched by around 20 million people – almost half the population of Britain at the time. The film was shown at Thetford’s People’s Palace cinema twice nightly for three nights in mid November. Check the Ancient House Facebook page and @ThetRemembers for details.

In July, Thetford Flower Club held a successful afternoon cream tea. The aim of the event was to raise funds for the club demonstrations and our yearly charity donations. The committee and members served tea, manned the sales table, raffle, tombola, jewellery and card stalls. Our main charity this year will be "Blood Bikes East Anglia", which delivers urgently needed blood, plasma and baby milk, often in the middle of the night. The photo shows Eric Lawrence, a volunteer and husband of committee member Pat, who supported our tea. The bike was funded by the East Anglian Lions clubs. A further donation will go to the charity “Dogs for Good”, another very worthwhile cause.

Fun, Games and Video thanks to Thetford Voices Seventy-five children and adults took part in August’s singing workshops from Thetford Voices. The programme included a very well received Toddlers’ Hour led by Sarah Skinner, Harmony Corner for older singers and the central two day course for 6-16 year olds.

The course theme Fun (fun, fun) and Games introduced a group of songs with the flavour of the Rio Olympics alongside others more generally reflecting sport, play and summer fun. Working together and in age related groups, the singers prepared an hour’s concert for friends and family before astonishing their audience with their polish and pzazz after barely two days’ rehearsal. This year saw song leader Myles Granger joining Sarah Skinner for the first time and the lively rapport of the leaders brought the best out of young and older singers alike. Myles’ own composition ‘The Little Wild Things’ in particular stays in the memory, up there with Alan Simmons ‘Rio Samba’ which opened the concert and the exuberant version of the Beach Boys’ ‘Fun, fun, fun’ which closed it. One number has a more permanent record, however. ‘Summer’ by the

established contemporary composer Jonathan Dove was sourced from Aldeburgh Music’s excellent Friday Afternoons project which makes new repertoire freely available to schools and youth choirs. A video of the song recorded in rehearsal during the Voices Workshop is currently featured on the Friday Afternoons website.

2017 will be the tenth year of the Thetford Voices project and anniversary celebrations are promised for next summer. Before that, Christmas Carolling Day is Wednesday 21st December. Young singers aged 6 and over are invited to note the date and look out for information about registration.

Coming Back From The Brink As the hand rearer for Breckland Cats Protection, I take in any kittens that are not weaned and cannot feed themselves. Some of them have been as young as one day old, two days old or a week old. There are a variety of reasons why these kittens don’t have a mother cat.

Some have been deliberately dumped and found by a member of the public, sometimes the kittens are born in somebody’s garden, and then something has frightened the mother cat away or sometimes they are just found under a hedge maybe, with no sign of the mother. Other times the kittens are in our care with the mother cat, but are not gaining weight or even losing weight.

Kittens need constant feeding from their mum and her warmth as well. They cannot control their body temperature at such a young age, so it is just as important to keep them warm, as it is to feed them.

I feed them on specialist kitten milk formula which I obtain from our vet, and the volume the kittens receive is determined by their weight. I weigh the kittens every morning and calculate how much milk they can have in a day, divided by the number of times they need feeding.

Under a week old, its every 2 and a half hours which equates to 10 times in 24 hours, which means night

time feeds as well. Night feeds continue until they are 3 weeks old, but less frequent. Although I try my hardest to keep the kittens alive, sadly they don’t all make it. And the situation can change very quickly. I can feed them at say 10am and they are fine, yet when I am ready to feed them at 12.30pm, something has changed. The Jack Pilling Art Gallery

Thetford WEA had two amazing courses last year, one on Islam in the UK and one giving us an overview of China's culture. Both these courses gave us better knowledge and understanding of matters that are of real importance in our world today. The lecturers were most knowledgeable but also friendly and keen to enter into discussion – but we generally find our speakers make their subject fascinating.

We are holding this September our second AGM after becoming a charity. If you wish to join us as a Trustee please give your name to Pam who is our Secretary.

The Gallery is doing extremely well as we have so far raised £21,000 for the St Nicholas Hospice Care and we extend our thanks to the Thetford Town Council for the use of the building.

This autumn we have chosen a quite different field with Andre Hernandez-Salazar speaking to us about Italian Opera. He will be exploring the period known as the Golden Century of Italian Opera which ranges from the premiere of the Barber of Seville in 1816 to Turandot in 1926 – a world of glorious melody. The first meeting is on Monday 26th September starting at 10.30am in the Methodist Hall on Tanner Street. There will be 10 sessions of 2 hours and the fee is £73.50. It is possible to enrol on line (look for WEA Eastern Region courses) or you can turn up at the first session.

Thetford Inner Wheel

The August meeting of the Thetford Society heard about the life of Miss Lucilla Reeve - pictured below.

Through a reanactor, a packed room heard of Lucillas life as a Land Agent in Breckland before the second World War. Lucilla took on the tenancy of Bagmore Farm in 1938 at a time when farming was in the doldrums and the battle she fought to continue with her agricultural life after the Army enlarged its area for military manoeuvres forcing local villagers to leave.

It was a remarkable tale of a defiant and resourceful woman, ultimately defeated by the broken promises of those in power.

On Thursday 7th July we had the most interesting afternoon outing at “Busy Bees Farm and Forest School” near Mildenhall. They are a Nursery School and miniature farm of twelve acres, they grow their own vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. There was an aviary, wild life pond falabella ponies, rabbits, chickens milking goats and a herd of alpacas. They have a “Yarn Barn” where the fleece from the farms own sheep and fibre from the alpacas are spun and woven. Felts are dyed using natural dyes such as Woad, Weld, Madder Coreopsis and Walnut all grown on the farm giving a wide range of wonderful, subtle and superior colours, that are most ecologically sound.

Then there followed a beautiful and elegantly laid out “Afternoon Tea” in their very own original Mongolian Yurt where we also got to see all the interesting “Art and Craft” and had a taste of their Raw and Pure products for health and wellbeing such as “Kombucha Green Tea with Elderberries” all very interesting and fascinating.

Brandon Photographic Club Our new year is due to start very soon!! Wednesday 7th September, 7.30pm at the Baptist Hall on the High Street in Brandon. Our first meeting is always Meet and Greet, a chance for members to catch up with each other and discuss what wonderful photographic chances they have had during the summer over a coffee and piece of cake. This year we have also planned a presentation of the year ahead.

The next monthly meeting is on September 6th at 7.30pm at United Reformed Church. Hair Removal In A Flash!

September in the salon is always a good time to start upon permanent hair removal. The children have gone back to school, most holidays are a memory, and tans are fading, which for our particular treatment is important. We offer free consultations and patch tests during September for both hair removal and skin rejuvenation. Community Fly Tipping Project I have just returned from a lovely holiday in Anglesey and I have to say that despite the many thousands of visitors they must have over the summer season, the lack of fly tipping, general litter and cigarette ends on the ground was very refreshing. The local people obviously take pride in where they live as I often saw them picking up the odd piece of litter that had been dropped or that had escaped from a bin in the wind.

This obviously must have been recognised by most visitors as the beaches and bays were also spotless.

Maybe it’s due to every litter bin having a notice stating that there is a £75 instant fine for littering. Maybe it’s due to Anglesey Council also having an on line reporting form that covers everything from dog fouling to fly tipping and is entitled ‘Environmental Crime’, which gives a very clear message. Maybe it’s a different way of life with different priorities or values. Maybe a combination of all of these? Whatever it is, I would love to know because it seems to be working.

Tesco Hard At Work In Local Community

Masonic Hall To Be Open

Employees from the local Tesco store have been hard at work at a number of community initiatives over the past few weeks. Recently, staff, including Tesco Community Champion Sarah Douthwaite painted fences at Garboldisham Primary School along with 8 other colleagues. Following this, Sarah and two in-store managers went and visited a lady in Thetford to assist with upgrading her garden. Thetford Garden Centre donated a hydrangea for her garden which was becoming difficult to keep in order due to her mobility issues.Tesco are always looking for more projects to work on so if the public know of anything come and speak to Sarah Douthwaite about it at Tesco Thetford.

The Masonic Hall (Coffee Mill) will be open on Saturday 10th September as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days.

Inside they have copies of the deeds to the Coffee Mill going back to the 1760's. It ceased milling just over a hundred years ago when the miller went bankrupt.

Coffee was roasted & ground until the 60's, and there has been visitors who can remember those times.

In the mid 60's it became a Masonic Hall and is still used as such today. During the Open Days organisers have been asked many questions about who they are and what they do. These days they are quite open and are pleased to answer any questions as best they can.

Masonry has been in Thetford since 1909 and has only missed one meeting in all those years. One of the purposes is to raise money for charity, but you won't see them on the street shaking boxes. Over the last five years Masons in Thetford have raised over £26,000 for charity. In Norfolk, over the same period over £2,000,000 has been raised. Very recently Freemasons in Norfolk raised £20,000 towards the cost of the new children's hospice.

Fun Day To Raise Play Area Cash

COMMUNITY CORNER

A shining example of the level of community spirit in Thetford will be on display again in September when local resident’s belonging to the Redcastle Action Group will once again be staging their now annual Fun Day.

Details of forthcoming resident group meetings taking place in September are below: Abbey Tenants and Residents’ Association Meeting on Monday 12th September 2016, 6pm at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre. Contact Brenda Canham on 07768974026 for more information.

Taking place on Saturday 10th September on the Redcastle school play ground, the event aims to raise funds to contribute to the full refurbishment of the play area located at Canons Walk. To date the group of Mums, Dads and Grand-parents have raised over £6,000 through a range of community fundraising activities. This year the fundraising haul will be split between the play area project and the Meet Up Cafe run by the Benjamin Foundation which is seeking funding for urgent repairs.

Barnham Action Group Next meeting will be Monday 19th September 2016.

Thetford Dolphins swimmers travelled to Norwich UEA for the Norfolk County Relay Gala and despite the tough competition managed to produce some excellent performances. The boys 9/10 years team of Louis James, Harry Fasey, James Foot & Archie King finished in a brilliant 2nd place in the 4 x 50m freestyle and the same quartet equalled that in the 4 x 50m special relay.

The girls 11/12 years team of Emma Malcolm, Maisie Francis, Paige Lougher & Alice Fasey set a New Club record in their 4 x 50m freestyle, a record which had stood since 1998. The same four girls also set a New Club record in the girls 11/12 years 4 x 50m medley relay, a record that had stood since 2001. Well done to them and to all Dolphins that took part.

Another great Season for Thetford Junior Hockey Club With another great season for Thetford Junior Hockey Club now finished, there are celebrations all round as the Club have come on in leaps and bounds.

With our new sponsors Pearson Capital coming onboard we were able to get our great new kit which helps make the children feel more like a team. This season we also invited Newmarket Junior Hockey Club over to our pitch to play in a friendly match which allowed our players to get a feel for playing against another side of similar ability.

Another first for the Club was our awards for the most improved player. For this all the players were given the chance to vote for the player they thought was the most improved player throughout the season. With the winner being Poppy Harper for the young group and Casey Minar-Kolade K for the older. We now can start looking forward to the new season which starts on Sunday September 11th at 11am on the MUGA behind Breckland Leisure Centre. With hockey growing in popularity and team GB playing at the Olympics last month now has never been a better time to get involved

Kuk Sool Won At the end of every junior class we always award one student with a coloured clip to go on their belt. This can be awarded for lots of different reasons; performing a particular skill well, picking themselves up when they’ve fallen, doing well in school, “Facing the Tiger” and overcoming an obstacle or fear. The list goes on.

Foremost is always showing excellent manners and respect. Saying “Sir” and “Ma’am,” “Please” and “Thank you,” greeting the instructor when they arrive with a handshake, bowing when they enter and leave the dojahng. To some this might look like the instructors wanting to be the big “I am,” but that is exactly the opposite of the purpose. It shows that the student has good self-discipline and a strong character, the cornerstones of learning martial arts correctly.
