Boxing Club Returns To Thetford After an absence of 24 years, young and old boxing fans are now able to train in the town at their own club. Thetford Town Boxing Club opens its doors in October fulfilling a dream for the managing committee and giving the town a much needed new facility.

Matt Dean, head coach and founder has along with his team, have been involved in the boxing world for a number of years. Experienced fighters and coaches, they are looking to develop the club and enable their members to make the most of their local boxing club.

Thetford Town Boxing Club has been awarded affiliation to England Boxing; this is something of an achievement in itself as the club had to meet some very strict requirements to gain this status. This affiliation now means that boxers, when ready, are allowed to complete in local and national competitions and can train in a ‘contact’ environment. It also allows the club to offer a clear development pathway to talented local boxers, similar to other sports such as rugby, and martial arts.

So far funding has been gratefully received from the Pearson Family Fund, Safer Norfolk Communities, Centre Parcs and the Community Sports Recreation Trust. We are also very appreciative of the positive support we have received from both Thetford and Breckland Council and Keystone Trust.”

To launch the club two sessions have taken place 25 young people attended the junior session and 32 attended the senior session. Tracey continued “It was heartening to see girls and women in these sessions and we welcome more. Roni is our female coach and is also a boxer.”

Out & About Thetford Thetford Grammar School celebrates a year of achievement

About Thetford enjoyed a ‘proud parent’ moment on September 16 when several of our delivery team were awarded prizes at their school annual prize giving day. For the first time TGS moved the annual ceremony from Thetford to the beautiful surroundings of St Edmundsbury Cathedral. The prizes were given out by Old Thetfordian, scientist Frank Onians, who gave an inspirational talk about his time at the school during WW2 . This included tales of some interesting souvenirs that were brought in during this time! The school’s successful year was brought to life by the well crafted speeches by the pupils on a range of activities happening throughout the year including sport, Duke of Edinburgh awards, arts awards, drama productions and musical performances to name a few. After prize giving, guests including Mayor of Thetford, Governors, parents, pupils and past pupils enjoyed light refreshments in the Cloisters to round off a very successful inaugural prize giving in the Cathedral.

Successful summer celebrated at the CBC

Staff, tenants and volunteers joined together with their families to enjoy as evening of live music as the Centre Management team reflected on another successful summer. Live music was provided by Nick Stephenson, a London based singer/songwriter who has played at many of the well known festivals and supported some high profile names. Nick treated his audience to a selection from his new album and talked about his inspiration and the background to his songs, making the evening one to remember! Stories In The Dark Comes To Thetford An unforgettable storytelling session is coming to Thetford as part of an Arts Council funded tour by renowned East Anglian storyteller Marion Leeper on October 21st. Dive inside the magical story tent and find out who stole the darkness, why the sun and the moon are high and dry in the sky and how three monkeys came to be in a canoe. Full of twinkly lights, vibrant colours and just a touch of darkness, the story tent provides the perfect storytelling adventure for 2 – 5 year olds. You will never have heard stories told like this before – storyteller & Bard of Cambridge, Marion Leeper creates a charmingly unforgettable family experience. Each show lasts for 30 minutes and has places for 15 children & their accompanying adult.

Today, Butten Island is unrecognizable from that of just thirty-five years ago.

Indeed, much water has passed under Butten Bridge since then. In 1999 a grand statue of Maharajah Duleep Singh was unveiled by HRH Prince of Wales in this, once forgotten, part of the riverside.

Wildlife, and birds in particular, were the focus of his telephoto lens that captured stunning close-ups of many of the country’s 450 species. His pictures included everything from Yellow-billed Kites to Speckled Mousebirds illustrating the great diversity of birdlife in Uganda. Taking boat trips on several lakes, notably Lake Victoria, and along the River Nile also gave him the opportunity to see and record those birds in watery habitats of the country. Watching wild birds in our own gardens and Britain’s countryside rarely fails to be fascinating, but seeing what Uganda offered in terms of colour, shape and size was something wonderfully different.

U3A Open Day Success Thetford University of the Third Age, now in its second year, had another successful Open Day on 22 September. Members and non members flocked into the Carnegie to see the wide array of groups on offer.

There was a variety of displays from the art, marquetry, photography, walking, badminton, science, cycling, badminton groups to cite only a few.

Group leaders rivalled with ingenuity to attract visitors to their stands. The Mayor of Thetford, Terry Jermy, and his consort, Corinne Fulford, were due to spend an hour with us but stayed well over and were very impressed by the variety of activities on offer for retired and semi retired people living in Thetford and surrounding area.

It was clear from the noise and the laughter that Thetford U3A is fulfilling its role of enabling people to have social contacts, make new friends and keep active. And to crown it all, the music group entertained the crowd with music of past years, the mah-jong group played non stop and demonstrated their skills at this intricate Chinese game and the wine tasting group had wine for everyone to try! Thetford U3A gained a few new members and everyone went home tired but happy!

WASPI In Norfolk Campaign launched A little know fact is that 45,000 Norfolk woman are affected by the pension age rising with no provision made for those caught in the cross over. Some women who were born in the 1950s are now finding that after years of paying in and expecting to retire at 60 years, the retirement age has been extended and they are not entitled to their pensions for up to 6 years.

Last February a Norfolk group of WASPI – ‘Women Against Pension Inequality’ was set up, called Pension Action In Norfolk (PAIN) aimed at campaigning not only to raise public awareness, but to also engage with the 9 Norfolk MPs. .

Speaking about the WASPI campaign Lynn said “We’ve worked all our lives, aiming at retiring at 60 when we should get our pension. We weren’t written to in 1995 when the first rise came into place, and now many ladies are suffering from ill health & finding it difficult to continue working. We’ve been let down by the government, we’ve paid in all our working lives and now some ladies born in the same year are getting their pension whilst others are told they have to wait another 3 years.” Recently WASPI held a national day of protest

and the ladies, including several from Thetford, joined forces in Norwich, some even dressing as Suffragettes.

Debunking myths within the law Popular misconceptions

O

ften in every day conversation you hear people discuss their perception of the law and of the legal profession. Often those perceptions are not true and here are some common examples:

with under a no win no fee agreement which allows for a success fee, the solicitor’s success fee may be deducted from the compensation but is always capped at 25% of that compensation leaving the client with at least 75% of their compensation.

I have a common law wife/husband There is no such thing as a Common Law spouse. Co-habitation confers far fewer rights upon parties upon separation. For example there is no right to maintenance (unless there are children of the relationship), division of assets or pension splitting as opposed to divorce. Co-habitation agreements can be prepared to make intentions clear and as to what happens on any separation. Any parties co-habiting are urged to firm up the co-ownership of any property in so far as to whether it is held as joint tenants or tenants in common and as to the proportion of each party’s respective share.

I don’t need a solicitor - I can deal with it myself A recent report by the Citizens Advice Bureau says that the stress, responsibility and loneliness of going to Court without representation can mean litigants in person achieve worse outcomes compared with their represented counterparts. Many solicitors offer fixed fees and sometimes flexibility as to payment enabling a party to receive representation to achieve the best possible outcome.

Any adult with children and/or assets should make a Will. If you are married and die without a Will, your spouse will get your personal possessions and the remainder of the Estate if there are no children or grandchildren. If there are children or grandchildren, then the surviving spouse only receives the first £250,000 and then half of the remainder. If you are unmarried, the surviving partner would only get any assets nominated such as pensions and lump sums outside of an Estate and the Estate will go to the deceased’s children, or if none their parents or siblings.

Contesting Wills can be costly, time consuming and stressful.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Gardening Notes - October 2016 October is the month for pumpkins and this year I have seen some monsters waiting to be picked and set on a doorstep for Halloween. When you need two men and a wheelbarrow to move one fruit, you’ve certainly done well! More usual fruit, like apples and pears, should be picked now and carefully stored. Perhaps you have some good-looking fruit you can bring out at Christmas – it doesn’t all have to be flown in from round the world.

Jerusalem artichokes can stay in the ground to be dug as you want them but their stems, regularly 6 foot high and more, should be cut back before they are blown over or broken down. The tubers are quite prolific and you need to clear them out as you harvest or every single one will grow next year and you can end up with lots of spindly shoots and small tubers instead of fewer sturdier stems and better sized vegetables. Replant a few of the best shaped tubers – this should bring you a crop that is manageable for preparation. Tubers can be so knobbly that there is little left when you have peeled them – still, all good for the compost heap.This is the time to plant garlic cloves. Get them well down in the ground and they will be establishing themselves overwinter. Elephant garlic has enormous cloves – nearly the size of a whole head of ordinary garlic. It is milder than the usual types but very easy for use in the kitchen and a real delight to harvest. And of course you can plant some of the cloves you have grown which is satisfyingly economical. This is the month for brilliant leaf colour and once they have been blown off the trees we

can take another “harvest”. If you have huge quantities of leaves they can be composted separately; they take longer, perhaps two years, but will provide you with wonderful leaf-mould. If there are leaves on your lawn, the mower will lift them, cut them and mix them with the grass clippings. This mixture rots down really well on the general compost heap. There is very little nutrition in leaves but they provide a sort of “blotting paper” so that the soil can hold moisture longer which is exactly what we need in this area (and they are FREE – don’t miss out). Prunings however are best taken to the council amenity site – you can fill the car with sacks of twigs – there is no charge. So clip back the hedges for winter – remembering that rain will make branches hang lower.

Prune any rambling roses now otherwise they will be romping away to flower at roof-top level. You can remove an old stem completely from an established plant - a ferociously prickly job warranting leather gauntlets – and this will encourage new shoots.

This month’s meeting is on Thursday 27th at 7.30pm in the United Reformed Church. Our speaker is Peter Firmin on “Showing and Growing vegetables – hints and tips”. It is always interesting to hear how things should be done even when you are unlikely to be bothering the RHS just yet. All are welcome.

Cleaning Advice from Maid 2 Clean We saunter into autumn still enjoying the occasional burst of sunshine and we are definitely “on the turn” as my granny used to say. But we can think about some jobs around the house that we might have put off during the warm summer days. You may clean your own home or have one of our Maid2Clean cleaners do it but let’s just pick five random things to bring to your attention as we change seasons.

Too busy?

Bath Toys – Just because they sit in water nearly every day, they can become excellent breeding grounds for bacteria and mildew. Clean them once a month by filling a bucket with warm water, add half a cup of white vinegar, soak for 10 minutes and then dry with a cloth.

Mop – rinse your mop after each use in a bucket of clean, hot water. Hang it to dry in a well-ventilated area.

Walls – Sweep the floor, wash the windows but when was the last time you cleaned the walls? A simple wash will get rid of fingerprints and scuff marks and they can look like they have just had a lick of paint!

Computer – Laptop or desktop, it’s dusty because electrical equipment generates static so all things that are plugged in attract dust. The keyboard gets especially grimy as a result of constant contact with your hands and I am betting some of you eat over it too right? Dust your computer and keyboard every week and for the screens, purchase a spray and cloth specifically designed to clean them.

Kitchen Sponge – Used for a variety of tasks from sweeping up crumbs to wiping down counters, it is a cosy home for bacteria. Rinse and wring well and don’t leave it in the sink, place it on a dish to air. And you should really replace your sponge every 2-3 weeks.

STAG were pleased to be able to facilitate two recent public meetings to enable the police to provide information and hear concerns about the 3/6 month trial closure of the Police Public Enquiry Office (PEO), which began at the end of September. Although not a STAG initiative, supporting these meetings is part of the work STAG do as a multi-agency partnership. A big thanks also to Barnham Cross Residents Group. Police will be working with partner agencies in the build up to Halloween and Bonfire Night. Operation Dampen Spirits runs each year and aims to minimise anti-social behaviour, identify and prevent any unlicensed and potentially dangerous bonfires and ensure that everyone can enjoy the events safely, but equally those vulnerable members of the community who may not want to get involved are not subjected to any nuisance behaviour. Police cadets and the special Constabulary will be assisting in the operation alongside regular officers. Norfolk Fire Service and local housing authorities will also be involved.

Centre Brings Down Curtain On Busy Summer As the nights draw in and the cold weather approaches, we can begin to reflect on an incredible summer at Charles Burrell Centre. In recent months we have hosted a number of successful community events such as the very first ‘Thetford Games’, a beach and barbeque day for families to enjoy, an evening of live music and of course our third annual Open Day which closed a spectacular festival period which provided entertainment of all shapes and sizes. We have helped raise money for Cancer Research UK Kid’s & Teens and Cleft-Lip and Palate Association by hosting fun days and craft fairs before ending the summer by thanking our volunteers with an evening of live music. And even though summer activities are coming to an end, there is still plenty more to come this year at CBC. We have ‘Stories in the Dark’ taking place on Friday 21st October, a Ghost Night on Saturday 22nd October, a 10k Forest Run on 27th November and a family friendly New Year’s Eve Party to look forward to. We are also set to welcome a further two tenants and help launch a brand new music development project in October as well as

Jack is a lovely friendly boy and he would prefer to be in a home where there are no other cats or dogs or young children. Thetford Lionesses

Thetford Inner Wheel began their new year with a dinner meeting at Wereham House Hotel. They were very pleased that their member, Jenny Childerhouse who has become District Chairman of Inner Wheel District 8 was able to be in them at the meeting. The evening was led by their President Susan Watson and was spent reviewing the plans for the club for the next year, including speaker meetings and charity fund raising events. At the end of the evening the members of the club raised £20 for the International Charity, “School in a Bag” The little bags on the back of the teddies are made to contain £15, which should be sufficient to buy a school bag and the contents for one pupil.

Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses met to plan future social and fundraising events for the Autumn. A collection of rags netted a profit of £71.70, which will be added to the charity fund. Future events include the Lioness Charter Anniversary, Ladies (only) Winter Quiz with soup and roll, Stall at the Christmas Light up, Tesco Christmas Collection and a Lioness Christmas meal.

The Lionesses meet at 7:30pm at Kings Court, Earls Street on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. New members are welcome. For further information please contact Dorothy on 0845-8334764.

Brandon and District Photographic Club It’s that time of the year again, Brandon & District Photographic Club are holding their annual Exhibition of photographic prints. Don’t miss out, this is a golden opportunity for our Club Members to show off their photographic skills to a wider audience.

You will find us in the Baptist Hall, High Street, Bandon Doors are open on Friday 7th October, 2016. 10am until 6pm and on Saturday 8th October, 2016, from 10am until 4pm.You will be able to spend time wandering round the displays looking at the prints on show and also judge for yourself which one you think is outstanding, by filling in one of the Voting Slips. You can then relax and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a slice of cake while watching a Rolling Slide Show of other images, taken over the last year or so, by our members.

Our year is now underway and on 19th October we are staging a Still Life Workshop using mirrors, glass and water, where you can learn how to use glass to warp your image or take reflective images. First Wedding at Ancient House!

Ancient House’s Tudor Hall must have played host to numerous celebrations over it 500 year life and this month opened a new chapter – a wedding venue. This August Ancient House hosted its very first civil partnership ceremony.

The Happy Couple – Dave and Malcolm were attracted to the unique intimate atmosphere of Ancient House for their special day. Guests took the opportunity to explore the museum displays and even try out the dressing up costumes. The small courtyard garden proved popular during the sunny afternoon for photographs and toasts. Dave commented: “Our Civil Partnership was a dream event made extra special by [the museum staff].”

Lynne Scerri, Museum Learning Assistant who coordinated the event said: “It was such a lovely day and shows what a great setting Ancient House is for smaller weddings.” Ancient House is open for weddings on Mondays when we can welcome wedding parties of up to 20 guests.

Museum Sleepovers!

Ancient House is a magical place after dark and we have a range of options enabling people to explore the museum after hours.

We welcome groups such as Brownies, Guides and Scout to book for a ’Museum at Night’ experience.

This could include exploring the museum by torch light, making a midnight snack on the Victorian range and bedding down in the Tudor Hall. Everyone who survives the night will receive a special Ancient House blanket patch.

Iceni Marathon Celebrates Second Successful Race 140 runners from across the UK took part in the 2nd Thetford half marathon and full marathon event on Sunday 11th September. The event starts and finishes at the Market Place and the route passes historical sites of the town before picking up the Angles Way to Euston.

The full marathon runners complete an out and back loop from Thetford to Euston and the half marathon runners complete a shorter out and back loop.

The event has tripled in size in 12 months. Winners: Half marathon male Karl Baxter, Northumberland, 1:40:29 and Stacey Harper, Norwich 1:40:29 Marathon Isaac Nugent, Elveden 3:18, this was a new course record smashing last year’s first place time of 3:53. First female for marathon was London runner Sunny Calitz-Patel in 4:21:58. Des and Allan Talbot (pictured top right) celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary by running together and finishing in 6:39:05. Blind runner Paul Watts from the 100 marathon club was guided round

by Mandy Harley and they both finished the tough terrain course in 6:09:33. Carol Goodwin, St Ives, Cambs, completed her 100th marathon in 6:57:07.

Our student of the month for August 2016 is Beatriz Da Silva. Beatriz is one of the longest serving students in the junior class and always sets a fantastic example for the younger children. She is respectful, listens carefully to instruction and consistently strives to improve her skill level. Beatriz will be testing this month for her red belt and trains not only with her two younger brothers, but also her mother and father.
