Breckland Council has issued advice to residents to remind them of the importance of staying safe on nights out. This includes advice on what to do if you feel uneasy after meeting someone on a date and ensuring you only use licensed taxis.

The district council is raising awareness of the ‘Ask for Angela’ national safety initiative, for anyone who is in a pub, club or restaurant and would like some help from the staff to get them out of a difficult situation. It’s especially aimed at people who are meeting for the first time, perhaps after using an online dating app.

Venues that participate in the scheme display an Ask for Angela poster to let customers know that if they approach a staff member and ‘ask for Angela’ the staff member will recognise that they are asking for help discreetly. The staff member can then help them by, for example, leading them to somewhere safe in the venue, calling a taxi or a friend for them, or accompanying them safely out of the premises.

The advice given includes the importance of booking private hire vehicles in advance - the driver will not be insured to carry passengers who haven’t done this; checking the driver is who they say they are by looking at their ID and asking them for the booking name rather than giving it themselves; checking in advance on a night out where the nearest taxi rank is; suggesting that passengers travel in groups and check everyone made it safely home, or asking drivers to wait until lone passengers are safely inside their home – reliable drivers will be happy to do this.

Councillor Gordon Bambridge, Executive Member for Waste and Environment at Breckland Council, said: “Now we’re able to enjoy a night out in our town centres again, we’d like to remind our residents of a couple of important ways to stay safe. Ask for Angela is a great initiative that we’re making all licensees in this district aware of, and we’d like the public to be aware of it too – it’s a simple thing and just knowing about it could really help someone”.

Remembrance Day Parade

Memorial Service To Resume

The annual Remembrance Day parade and service will be taking place this year on Sunday 14th November 2021 at Thetford Market Square.

Those wishing to participate in the parade will need to assemble at 10am at the former Argos car park, then at 10.30am the parade will march off, led by the City of Norwich pipe band and the RAF Honington Honour Guard and the Royal British Legion Standards.

After missing last year because of the pandemic, the annual memorial service to honour the aircrew buried in war graves at Wretham will resume this year. The service, organised by Thetford branch Royal Air Forces Association, will be held at the war memorial outside St. Ethelbert’s Church on Wednesday November 10th, at 10.45am.

The parade will march through the town via Well Street and assemble at the Market Square along with the Mayor of Thetford and members of Thetford Town Council ready for the service and the two minute silence at 11am. After the service the parade will return to the car park and dismiss.

All those participating are welcome to join members of the Royal British Legion at the club premises on the Market Square. Please note that leaders of other organisations, especially youth groups, should advise their members to be prepared for cold or wet weather and dress accordingly. Also please remember that many current Covid safety procedures still apply, those who wish to wear a face mask may do so.

Invitations have gone to the Czech, Slovak and Polish embassies in London, along with RAF Honington and other interested parties from previous years. After wreaths are laid at the memorial, the parade marches standards to the war graves, where poppy crosses are placed.

Refreshments are later served in the Village Hall.

The traditional Remembrance Sunday service organised by Wretham and Hockham branch Royal British Legion will this year be held at Larling Church on Sunday November 14th at 10.50am.

Delving Into The Past

As many will be aware Thetford has expanded massively since the 1950’s, primarily due to the Borough Council decision to apply for the GLC London overspill project. What is less known however, is that these new estates (Abbey Farm as well as most ‘North of the River’ estates) cut directly across the Late Anglo-Saxon period remnants of the town. This had a catastrophic impact on the archaeological record of the area, as great swathes of land were displaced during the construction process. In many regards this is upsetting, as so much available knowledge for how the prior denizens of Thetford lived, worked and died is now lost to us. On the other hand, it is perhaps comforting to know that despite the great changes that have swept over the UK since the late Saxon period, people still call home some of the same areas, although certainly living contrasting lives!

Most Thetford residents will also be familiar with the iconic ‘Castle Hill’, a chalk mound that is situated within Castle Park. The name is fitting, as it was indeed the site of a motte and bailey castle, erected in the post-Norman period, as a means of cementing the authority of the new feudal nobility on important areas1. The fort would have watched over the Little Ouse and Thet rivers, as the town continued its growth throughout the 12th century.

However, this certainly does not reflect the earliest occupation of this area, nor was it the first use of the hill as a rampart. The park’s exterior ridges contain materials from the Iron Age (100 AD)2.

Those who have read the signs placed in Castle Park will be aware of the use of the site by the Iceni tribe during this time, and most people will certainly recall Boadica, their most iconic leader against the Roman occupation of Britain. What many may not be aware of, is an excavation at Fison Way3, which uncovered a Druidic religious site – dated to this same period and separate to the Thetford Treasure find. The site showing us that the people who called Thetford home had more to them than woad blue body paint and defensive hills.

Even so, delving even further into the past, you may come to learn (on account of the brilliant work of the archaeological community) that Thetford was inhabited long before even the Iceni could have coalesced, during the primordial Bronze Age – around 1,000 BC. Excavations at Mill Lane (1995), Castle Hill (1962) and Fison Way (1992) have allowed for a great body of soil analysis to be done. What becomes apparent is the acceleration of deforestation4, a trend that had been going on since the Neolithic period. The clearing of Britain's primordial wildwood is believed to have been carried out for the sake of agriculture. The heaths we are so well acquainted with were not always here, and in fact, owe in large part our ancient ancestors to their prolific existence in East Anglia.

The dig at Thetford Castle Hill also revealed a number of artifacts – including arrowheads, as well as flint and pottery, all dated to this same era – showing that these early comers to Thetford had need of protection, from wildlife or otherwise.

But ultimately one may find themselves asking, why does any of this matter? Why is it important to understand the lives of these people? And perhaps chief in the minds of some readers, why should we have to front the bill to pay for all this digging that seems to be involved? It may indeed seem contrived to focus on the past, especially with how frequently we are reminded of the perils the future holds. My argument is that without a great appreciation for these ancestors, we may never be able to solve those problems of the future. You are the latest of a long line of people to call this town home, so be proud, and appreciate all you have. ‘We do not Inherit the Earth from Our Ancestors; we borrow it from our children’.

Fantastic Fundraisers Big Climb When Lavinia Crosbie was 8 months old she was diagnosed with retinoblastoma and endured 6 cycles of chemotherapy at Royal London Hospital.

The charity CHECT (Childhood Eye Cancer Trust) supported Lavinia and her parents Lucy and Steven throughout Lavinia’s treatment and still do. Although Lavinia’s tumour has been inactive since she was 13 months old, the 5 year old from Thetford, still has regular hospital check ups and post chemo side effects.

However Lucy, Lavinia’s mum says that every penny they raise is needed as CHECT provides such vital support to families during a difficult time in their lives and going forward. Although the girls have successfully completed their challenge, Lucy is still accepting donations as every penny counts.

CHECT are always at Lavinia’s check-ups in London, they provide Lavinia and her family with emotional and financial support and arrange meet ups, so the family can meet children and other families diagnosed with retinoblastoma. Lucy explained that although Lavinia’s treatment came under the NHS, there were lots of hidden costs that the family had to cover including transport and parking costs for hospital visits, food for themselves when they had to stay on the ward with Lavinia and loss of earnings during Lavinia’s treatment. Without the support from CHECT life would have been much more difficult than it already was. The charity has continued to support Lavinia throughout the covid lockdowns with zoom story book sessions. Lavinia is no stranger to fundraising and during lockdown took part in the 2.6 challenge where she drew 26 rainbows and posted them to 26 people around the UK who asked for them. As September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Lavinia and a group of her friends along with their siblings aged between 2 and 5 years old, planned to complete a climb of the Castle Hill steps as a fundraising challenge.

Those 88 steps are a huge challenge to many people but even more so when you only have little legs. Lavinia and Athena, Olive, Mabel, Nancy, Anabelle, Poppy, Sophie, Daisy, Beth, Bella, Tilly and Izabella climbed the steps 5 consecutive times, made extra challenging as they had been

Service of Thanksgiving For Town Stalwart Members of the community joined the family and friends of Colin Armes for a Service of Thanksgiving at St Cuthbert’s Church, 9 months after his passing.

Sylvia, Colin’s wife of over 60 years spoke of his early life in the town before his great friend Pat Pearson read a poem called ‘A Norfolk Man’.

Colin’s son Nigel then paid tribute to his father who he described as someone who chipped away at those in authority to get things changed. Colin was very proud to be directly descended from Norfolk’s Robert Kett via his mother and lived his life by similar values. “Kett was all about fighting for the common folk and dad was very much of that ilk.” Nigel explained.

Colin grew up in Earls Street and attended Norwich Road School for Boys until he was 14. He was 9 years old at the outbreak of WW2 and spent the following years heading into bomb shelters.

Whilst inside he learnt to identify the different planes by the sound of them flying overhead.

He also displayed a strong entrepreneurial spirit, collecting and selling paper to the pulp mill, moss to florists and breeding rabbits for sale. One of the benefits to having troops nearby included a school visit to Wretham Camp. Colin enjoyed his visit so much that he proceeded to win a competition in the local newspaper by writing about his visit. Ever inquisitive, his bedroom window on the 3rd floor of the family home provided the perfect spot for quietly observing people heading to the dances at the nearby Oddfellows Hall. Colin started work once he left school aged 14, working in a shop

in King Street. Aged 18 he signed up for his National Service with the RAF and left Thetford for a series of adventures ending up in Singapore.

By Christmas 1950 he was demobbed and returned to Thetford, finding work as a postman in Brandon, cycling there every day. Three years later the opportunity to transfer to Thetford Post Office arose, where he stayed for the rest of his career. Colin became interested in industrial relations at Thetford Post Office, becoming the Union Secretary before stepping up as the Union Rep. Aged 27 and finally on full pay, he married his wife Sylvia and brought his first home in the town. Colin maintained the gardens at Red House, had an allotment at Mundford Road and worked shifts at the Post Office. His son Nigel said that “Dad made sure we had a childhood to remember.” As Nigel and Ian grew up, Colin became active in local politics. In early 1970s he was co-opted onto Thetford Council and from there eventually became a ‘triple hatter’ – a town, district and county councillor. He was to become one of the most significant Labour Councillors of recent times.

Colin was Mayor of Thetford twice and Chair of Breckland Council before finally becoming Mayor Consort when Sylvia became Mayor in 2014. In total, Colin served as a Councillor for 33 years.

Colin was a community champion, he once said, “That’s what being involved in the community is all about, getting things done.” And he achieved a huge amount. He was involved in many of the social changes in the town during his time as a councillor. He was a warm and friendly person

either greeting people with a warm handshake or a firm hand on the shoulder if he wanted to talk about something. Colin fundraised for the new Thetford swimming pool in the 1970s, then opened it as Mayor. He also created Thetford Scouts campsite at Two Mile Bottom, Thetford Town Concert Committee, The Thetford Festival, Thetford Music Project 100 Club, Norwich Road Estate Residents Association and was involved with Barnham Cross Residents Association, Ancient House Museum, Thetford River Group and the Thetford Society to name a few. Many of the groups he was involved in reflected his love for music and performances. His work with local schools highlighted how important he found education despite having his own cut early. Some of the projects Colin was most proud of were the conversion of the Shambles from a bus shelter to shops, and the creation of the Gentle Bridge. He even persuaded Prince Charles to open it after meeting him at Highgrove House. “The family are so proud of him and his achievements” Nigel said.

In later years Colin remained active in the town, he was passionate about Thetford River corridor and could be found on occasion up to his waist in mud clearing the river of weeds and debris or pulling up weeds around town. Colin also inspired many of the next generation of councillors in Thetford.

end of his life, Colin remained interested in the town to the very end, planning a fountain in the front of the Coffee Mill to improve the area. After his death last December, Colin’s family raised money in his memory for School Lane Surgery as a show of appreciation for the care he received whilst he was ill – two new ECG monitors were purchased to help patients in Thetford. Another fitting tribute to the man who loved the town and its residents so much.

Plastic Problems Under Spotlight Learners from Nova Training (Thetford) have been discussing ways in which we can better educate local people about environmental damage caused by plastics and other recyclables. il t (

We have decided on a plan of action and would like to ask for your support and backing in bringing the issue to local people by staging an open art evening at our training centre on Raymond Street (opposite Winners Bingo). The exhibition will consist of works by us and other local people made entirely from recyclable materials. We are hoping to coincide this event with the switching-on of the Christmas lights.

Part one of our plan is to request that local people drop off any recyclables (plastic, cans, cardboard etc.) at our training centre between the hours of 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Alongside this event the learners have also come up with the idea of asking local people to bring in children’s toys (not including electronics) that are in a re-usable condition, so that we can offer these to struggling families at Christmas in return for a small donation which would then go to a charity chosen by us.

She already does so much for our U3A with various groups and also the volunteer groups she runs. We all believe she will be a much valued member. We are desperate for new members to join. The job involves meeting for two hours or so every other month. If anyone is interested please either call or email me. After the AGM closed we were pleased to see Jo from Phoenix Owls who came with a selection of her birds of prey. She walks around the hall with them and surprisingly they accepted the camera flashes without trying to get away. Some people were a little apprehensive that the owls would be flying free around the room but they were firmly tethered to Jo, a lot of people asked me if I would try and rebook her again. I am pleased to report that she will visit us agin in July 2023.

The WEA is resuming its Adult Education courses this Autumn and the Thetford branch will be holding a series of general interest talks with the title ‘Gotta sing, gotta dance’’, from ‘The Jazz Singer’ to ‘the Greatest Showman’. This informal course looks at the techniques and developments in the genre. Meetings will be on Mondays in the Methodist Church Hall and last two hours, starting at 10.30am. They run from the 1st November to the 6th December and the fee is £47.40 – but free to those on Pension Credit or similar. Following a short annual general meeting, a vote was passed by all members to stay at the current venue, but to change from February 2022 to a Tuesday, meeting in the afternoon at 2pm. This discussion was followed by a great demonstration by much loved demonstrator Brenda Tubb entitled ‘More Bloomin’ Flowers’, which had members enthralled with much laughter! Our November meeting will again be on a Thursday evening, on November 18th with well known demonstrator Crystal Dybal - demontrating her ‘Christmas Celebrations’. A much awaited return of a very talented lady.

Thetford Flower Club, like many local clubs, has had a difficult time, due to to Covid, but hope to welcome new members and committee members by moving to afternoon meetings on a Tuesday each month from February 2022. New Litter Picking Kit For Local Groups Community groups and residents in Thetford are set to benefit from a batch of new litter picking equipment made available locally.

New litter pickers, gloves, bags and hoops have been purchased by Councillor Terry Jermy from his local member highways budget provided by Norfolk County Council. The fund is available to all County Councillors and allows members to focus on small-scale projects or initiatives within their division, subject to certain criteria.

Councillor Jermy explained; “We know that many Thetford residents are very passionate about where they live and hate to see rubbish strewn around our communities. That rubbish can also be very damaging to the local environment and wildlife as well as being unsightly. We have a number of proactive local groups that organise regular litter picks and some that undertake sessions on an ad hoc basis. The new kit is stored locally and available free of charge for any local groups to borrow and use to support their litter picking efforts”.

The kit is stored at the Charles Burrell Centre on Staniforth Road and can be used by groups or individuals that want to help keep their community tidy. People are encouraged to pre-book to ensure that the kit is available and not already in use by another group. The Centre can be contacted on 01842 779867.

The equipment is being put to good use each month across the town’s Burrell Ward at a new monthly community litter pick. The group meet on the second Saturday of each month at 10am, alternating between meeting at the Charles Burrell Centre and the Meet Up Café. From each location the group spread out across the Burrell Ward each month. The activity is open to all to attend.

Burrell Ward Councillor Chris Harvey said; “Our monthly litter picks have been going for a few months now and we’re really pleased with the support that we have received. At each session we remove more than a dozen bags worth of rubbish from the streets and we ensure that all cans and bottles are recycled. If whilst we are out, we spot bigger items like fly-tips, we photograph these and report to the relevant authorities as well”.

Harvest. A time of feasts and food aplenty, bringing communities together in celebration. I like to use this time to fill my stock cupboards and prepare for Christmas. My sloe gin is steeping, pumpkins are pickled and my apples are crumbled. For British wildlife, however, this season of mists and mellow fruitfulness heralds the coming winter. It is an opportunity that must not be missed. Nuts must be stashed and berries must be gorged upon in order to fatten up for the winter’s harsh frosts and food shortages.

It’s at this time of year when birds may turn to our gardens for some respite, more readily seeking shelter from the cold, or feasting at our feeders for a harvest of nuts and seeds. Sunflower seeds are favoured by tits and Greenfinches whilst niger seeds, which are rich in fat and oil, will entice Goldfinches and Siskins. If you are looking to attract Nuthatches and woodpeckers to your gardens, then adding protein-rich peanuts to your feeders should do the trick. For me, the real treat comes when the flocks of thrushes and waxwings descend on the garden, foraging for the last remaining apples left in the orchard, or filling up on Rowan and Hawthorn berries.

Having birds and wildlife visit our gardens for a one-off snack, or regularly for their daily dinner, is a real treat for many of us and our gardens.

Providing food for our feathered friends means not only do we get to watch them from our kitchen windows, but we may also help them survive the winter. Our gardens are incredibly important habitats for wildlife and are becoming essential as our landscapes become more urbanized.

Christmas Hamper Appeal Last year, the Thetford Foundation worked to provide over 100 Christmas Hampers to our elderly and isolated residents in Thetford and the surrounding area. They had help from local businesses, individuals and churches donating items for the hampers as well as help on packing day from a small army of volunteers to make up the hampers and gift wrap them too! They said that it was a one off – but in time honoured tradition they are on it again for 2021! They need your help and it will be fun.

A Christmas Quiz is planned for Friday 26th November at CBC with teams of up to 6 people taking part at a cost of just £5 per person. A complimentary glass of mulled wine and festive nibbles will be provided and there is a huge Advent Raffle on the night too. Attendees are encouraged to wear festive clothes or a Christmas jumper and the best dressed person will win a prize too.

Booking for this is through; www.leapinghare.org And 9 bakers will compete in the ‘Great CBC Bake Off’ on Saturday 20th November – one of them will win a Star Baker Apron and other cookery related goodies! Bakers can be any age but under 16’s will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Competitors will be asked to make cookies, scones and a cake of their choice in the Burrell Kitchen. Judging, tasting and refreshments will then take place in the café with the audience able to try the bakes!

Father Christmas Is Coming To Town!

Sadly last year Father Christmas had to cancel his visit to the Charles Burrell Centre, but this year he promises his visit will be better than ever!

On Saturday 4th December he will be visiting the main Hall at the CBC for the day. Tickets must be brought in advance and include a small gift. Children will be greeted by one of Father Christmas’ elves who will ensure they have a magical time. Father Christmas says that he is looking forward to meeting everyone, and seeing the decorations at the CBC. Visitors will also be able to enjoy decorating a Christmas biscuit to take home and write their own letter to send to Father Christmas. The Methodist Church Tree Festival Committee are pleased to announce that this year’s event will take place on the following dates: Friday 26th November (6pm - 8pm to coincide with Thetford Christmas lights switch-on) and 27th November, 9.30am - 4pm. Christmas Craft Fair At The Fen Suffolk Wildlife Trust are holding a Christmas craft fair at Redgrave and Lopham Fen on Sunday 7th November from 11am to 4pm.

The Learning Centre will be hosting a number of local artists and makers, so this is a really ideal opportunity to find that perfect Christmas gift or even treat yourself to some local art and craft.

With needle felted creations, ceramics, metalwork, pyrography, original linocut prints and paintings, hand painted items, stained glass, preserves and more, there is sure to be something to suit all tastes and budgets. Then came a highly entertaining and informative talk by Tony Diamond entitled ‘The Hijacking of Edith Cavell’. He explained that Edith, who grew up in Swardeston, saved the lives of many soldiers from both sides in Belgium during World War 1, as well as helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape. He described the reporting of her arrest and execution by both the German and English press in October 2015 and the following years.

There were disagreements over the reasons for her arrest, with the Germans saying she was arrested for spying, while London’s Foreign Office said that there was no espionage, the differences continued over the reporting of her execution.

Rudyard Kipling used the event as inspiration for propaganda, leading to a huge increase in those signing on and eventually helping to bring the United States into the war. After the war, Edith was one of only three dead to be repatriated and there followed a state funeral and burial at Norwich.

More memorials were erected to her worldwide than for anyone else except war heroes.

Busy Time For Dementia Group

WNAS Back With A Flying Start

After a busy October for the group, November greets us and we have a few things planned for this month, including a Friday of music at the group and also a visit from our lovely pet dog Spencer.

We are also preparing our TADDS Christmas tree for the Methodist Church Christmas Tree festival later in the month, this festival is always beautifully done, so if you are able to pop in and have a look at the lovely trees on show.

The West Norfolk Aviation Society rose again in October at the Mundford Bowls Club. The Chairman, Chris Halliday, also rose to the occasion by mounting a chair, thus allowing room for his copious cue cards to parachute to the floor.

But, prior to these theatricals, David Allen, founder and multi-roled member, gave a résumé of the part played by the society since its inception nearly 30 years ago; its motto then: ‘Dedicated in the Desire to Defy Gravity’. Between the two of them, 'Manager' and Chairman, the meeting was conducted with professionalism and good humour, many objectives being achieved with willingness among attendees to be appointed to ranks in the chain of command. Attendance was better than expected; there were present two ladies, two prospective new members and a forty year old boy who might have been a lot younger; our president until a few years ago was a 97 year old Wing Commander, Ken Wallace.

We are also involved in the Spotlight on Thetford day on Sunday 28th November, where we will be around on the day to give information on dementia and our group.

There are lots of things going to be happening on the day in the town centre so pop down and have a look at the different groups & support available locally to everyone. Thank you to everyone who attended the memorial morning we had in October.

Thank you also to the residents of Ramsey Close who graciously accepted the cars and dropping off that went on, on the morning. I am currently discussing further planting for the area and hope to have more information for everyone in December, about this. Huge thanks to Nicole Turner - Celebrant, for conducting the morning for us, and also coming back to share in the stories, tea and cake after. Thanks aswell to Laine at Mark Skinner Funeral Service for the absolutely beautiful memorial booklets produced for us.

Tracy from the Engine Room Café at CBC is very pleased to announce that the Burrell Kitchen – a training space for cookery – is ready for students of all ages. When she joined the team at CBC, Tracy could see how the huge old school canteen area could be a great café and training kitchen and now that vision is a reality. West Suffolk College will be providing some courses, Tracy herself will be doing the same and local schools have already expressed interest in bringing children over to learn some basic home cooking skills. And there’s even a “Burrell Bake Off” style competition planned too!

The Engine Room café re-opened in October and was quickly filled with the aroma of home made lunches and soups. It has certainly helped get the “Burrell Buzz” back in the building and staff are loving how much busier the centre is feeling.

It’s now been two months since the Charles Burrell Museum reopened its doors to the public and to be honest those two months have gone by in a bit of a blur!

Since reopening we have all been immensely touched and overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our visitors and I’d especially like to thank the people of Thetford itself for their support.

The Charles Burrell Museum is your museum first and foremost and I’m thrilled that so many of you have popped in!

Unfortunately due to our staff being volunteers and many of us also working paid jobs full time (including me!) there have been rare occasions that we have been unable to open. We will always try to publicise any closures on our website and Facebook page so please check those if you are planning a visit! However on October the 2nd the Museum was closed for a very different reason, namely the wedding of Engine Officer Richard Stock to our Deputy Manager Teresia Sarney.

Although the day itself was rather wet it didn’t dampen the wonderful atmosphere at the venue – Thetford's very own Bell Hotel – and the ceremony went off perfectly. In true Burrell Museum fashion the ‘other woman’ in their lives, our very own Showman’s Engine Queen Mary, was involved in the day’s proceedings and sat outside in the rain, looking very smart after having been bestowed with ribbons and having had her brass especially polished for the occasion! All of Richard and Teresia’s “steam family" at the CBM would like to wish them many years of happiness to come.

The priority is to deal with the recent letters you’ve received from DWP, if you are unsure what they are about you can bring them to Thetford Citizens Advice and we can help you to understand what is being asked of you. Bring someone you trust with you who can translate if necessary. Then report it - if you think that someone has used your personal details to gain financially this is fraud and needs reporting.

As the clocks go back and daylight hours reduce, I would like to take this opportunity to provide some top tips on how you can report suspicious activity in our communities. As the additional “eyes and ears” within the community you can help to reduce crime by knowing what to report and how to report it. So, what is “suspicious” activity? Suspicious activities can refer to incidents, events as well as individuals or circumstances that seem unusual or out of place.

There are four general categories to consider when determining what to report would be: • Suspicious activities, people and vehicles.

• Illegal activities.

• Unusual events or incidents.

• Dangerous situations.

Some common examples include a stranger loitering in your neighbourhood or a vehicle cruising the streets repeatedly. Someone peering into cars or windows. High volume of traffic (either vehicles or pedestrians) going to and coming from a home daily. Someone loitering around schools, parks or secluded areas. Strange odours coming from a house of building. Sounds of breaking glass, screaming or fighting. Strangers removing license plates or loading valuables into vehicles from a residence.

By reporting these types of suspicious activities, you can help the police make communities safer and more secure. When reporting suspicious persons start with the basics and get gradually more specific. One reliable method to provide a good suspect description is to begin at the head and work your way down. For example: “He was a white male with blonde hair. He was wearing a brown shirt, blue jeans and trainers.” or “She was a black female about twenty years old, short hair, thin build and wearing a red cotton dress and sandals.”

When reporting suspicious vehicles provide as much detail as possible about the vehicle, its occupants, the registration number or identifying marks, its activities and direction of travel. When providing location details an exact location and specific address is always best if possible but you can also provide nearby roads and junctions. Past & Present

There have been some significant changes to Bridge Street over the past 9 years. The Anchor Hotel and building beside it were demolished in December 2012, with a new complex including a cinema, hotel and retail units being built in and opened in December 2016. Although the Grammar School buildings still remain, the trees have disappeared from what has now become the Main Reception car park, whilst others now obscure the view of the School House just beyond A Taste Of China restaurant.

At the recent meeting of the Thetford Society, this mystery was intriguingly left unsolved. However the speaker Andrew Tullett, in his talk entitled “Signs of an English Summer”, showed that much reliable history as well as fanciful interpretation is to be found on the many village signs across the county. Andrew explained that his passion for the village sign began with his father’s similar enthusiasm and his retirement project has been to expand the recording of these varied memorials where his father left off. The illustrated talk took us on a tour around the county with a challenge to look again at these unique posts and see the fascinating stories behind them. In fairness it should be noted as far as Thetford goes, the dubious contribution of Sweyn Forkbeard is balanced on the sign’s reverse by an image of the more influential Thomas Paine!

Winter Skin It’s at this time of year we begin to experience changes to our skin. It may appear much drier, become chapped and much more hypersensitive to things, especially the lips and hands and especially since we have been wearing masks so much. Products and creams that we have used in the past and been perfectly fine with may now irritate the skin causing inflammation, redness and even itching. With the holiday season fast approaching and parties we start eating richer foods and drink more alcohol and probably more hot caffeine beverages to keep warm which in turn has a dehydrating effect on the skin. Other factors which cause changes may be triggered by a change in the environment, cold weather, central heating which can all cause dryness. Normally, we try to overcome these effects by applying more moisturiser but this in turn may not be the best solution as the moisturiser may be too rich, which can make the skin feel congested instead of what we really wanted which was hydration! Also, some moisturisers contain perfumes and or colours which then makes it become itchy and or red and easily irritated.

For maximum results keep it simple, try hydrating, soothing spritzers which contain humectants to bind and attract moisture to the skin, and calming extracts of lavender, cucumber and raspberry extract. They are really easy to use can be applied several times during the day, also through make up and they will help create a protective shield against assault from the environment which can lead to irritated, dry, tight or sensitised skin. Avoid artificial perfumes and colours in products. Also, serums can really boost the power of the moisturiser, this will really help without added excess oil. A great idea is to have a deep cleansing and exfoliating facial, prior to any nice outings or events and then the skin will feel in optimum, tip top condition!

Autumn is the peak time for ticks, and it is important that your cat is protected. Ticks are generally found in areas of woodland, heathland and grassland, waiting for an animal or human to brush past them so that they can jump on and feed. They attach using their mouthparts and will feed on blood from their host for several days before finally dropping off. The main issue with ticks is that they can carry diseases in their saliva which then can potentially transmit to pets. These include Lyme disease although only a small percentage of ticks carry it. Affected pets (and humans) may develop swollen joints and generalised stiffness. They can also develop other symptoms including fever, appetite loss, lethargy and rarely, life threatening kidney disease.

There are a range of products that rapidly kill or repel ticks and which are very important in reducing tick feeding and therefore disease exposure. Ask your vet about the products on offer.

Harvest mites are another Autumn parasite. These tiny mites live in long grass and swarm onto passing pets,where they typically congregate on the face, ears and feet. They appear as bright orange dots and are usually a cause of great irritation as they feed on your cat. Fleas decrease outside as the weather cools, but as the central heating goes on, so numbers increase inside your home! Our homes have everything they need, warmth, carpets, and soft furnishings to breed in and a readily available source of food in our pets. Make sure your cat is protected by using a preventive treatment from your vets.

At our October meeting we made plans for a coffee morning to be held later that month and we were all encouraged to take Quiz forms which will hopefully tax our brains and bring in some charity money. After a delicious meal, an amazingly talented Lois Gill entertained us. She had, with a team from various local village churches, set up the Blossom and Yarn and Petal and Purl displays. She enthralled us with how flowers, sheep, people including the Queen and all sorts of animals had been constructed from knitted squares. These displays had raised hundreds of pounds for charity. Finally, she unveiled a fantastic life size Captain Tom complete with walker and wearing a blazer adorned with his medals and regimental badge. Members had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Chances, a £4.9m Norfolk County Council project, co-funded by the European Social Fund, is reaching out to people in Norfolk who have lost their jobs or are long-term unemployed who may face barriers to finding work. It aims to help them get back into employment through new opportunities for support and training.

Launched in April 2021, the project has already supported nearly 300 participants on their journey to find employment.

Councillor Graham Plant, Cabinet Member for Growing the Economy, said: “In recent months, we have seen employment figures soar. This is really encouraging but some people are still struggling. They may have been furloughed through the Covid-19 pandemic and then lost their jobs, be long-term unemployed or have health issues that have limited their options. Chances could be the beginning of a journey to a new job or training opportunity”.

The Norfolk County Council-led Chances for Work and Chances Healthy Living projects are being run by partners Voluntary Norfolk, Citizens Advice Norfolk, Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford and District, and Future Projects. There are local advocates based in each of the seven Norfolk district areas, who work to provide personalised one-to-one support.

Sam Whatling, is a 34 year-old mum of two young children, living in Thetford. “When the Job Centre referred me to the CHANCES project, I was put in touch with Lyn, my support worker. I’d been out of the game for eleven years, so she helped me put a CV together and supported me to look for courses. She helped me with my job application to Center Parcs and with the wording for the cover letter. That was really helpful”.

Mel Jones, Chief Officer for Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford & District, said: “The Chances project provides a great way for people who are out of work to explore the labour market and access help with seeking work or other opportunities, such as volunteering. For those who have been out of work for some time, it helps them to bring their CV’s up to date and to seek employment that suits their individual needs. For those who are less work-ready, it enables them to explore other suitable opportunities. Our Chances advocates are friendly and helpful, as well as being very skilled in their field. We are delighted to be involved in this work, in partnership with a range of other organisations in Norfolk.”

Our Reynard Reads Book Club meets again on Wednesday 17th November at 7pm and we will be discussing Elly Griffiths’ The Night Hawks – we’re really looking forward to seeing how Elly pulls in the Legend of Black Shuck into her fabulous series set in Norfolk. We’ll be open until 7pm on Friday 26th November to coincide with the Christmas Lights Switch on, there may even be a festive treat or two!

We’re also delighted to host a free event on Saturday 27th November at 2pm with Kate Stephenson. She will be sharing her experiences of compiling and editing Connections with Nature and sharing some readings from the book.

First Book For Wildlife Writer

Local journalist and writer Kate Stephenson has launched her first book – an anthology; Connections With Nature: 50 moments of meeting the wild. Join a collective of nature loving storytellers, known as ‘The Wildlife Blogger Crowd’, on a journey to meet the wild. Following the success of our summer workshop when covid limited numbers but enthusiasm and the enjoyment of some great songs undimmed – Thetford Voices is getting ready for Christmas.

Carolling Day is Wednesday the 22nd December and we invite young singers from all over Thetford and around – 6 to 16 years olds - to join us rehearsing and performing carols and Christmas songs. It will be great to be singing live once again, as we have been doing since 2008 (only missing last year, when our celebrations were Zoom laden). Appropriate covid safety measures will be in place for 2021, so all of the final detailed arrangements, including timings, must wait until nearer the date but we shall be based once again in Thetford Grammar School and end the day with a concert for friends and families. There is no charge for the day. Whether you sing in a choir, perform in a group or just hum to yourself at home, whether you know lots of carols or none yet, if you already enjoy singing with other people or just want to give it a go, do join us on the Wednesday before Christmas. And bring your friends.

The covid pandemic has made many people reassess their lives and for Thetford man Marcus Hawkins, it was the catalyst that he needed to make a big change. Marcus has lived in the town all his life having attended Redcastle Furze School and Charles Burrell High School. After school Marcus started an apprenticeship with British Gas, based at their Bury Road Depot, where he worked his way up over 30 years to Lead Engineer. Marcus says that the covid pandemic made him rethink his career, and he decided he wanted to be his own boss. “Meeting people and fixing things are what I loved the most about my job,” he continued, “I love my regular customers and having the time to look after them properly.”

Marcus Hawkins – The Gas Man specialises in boiler services, breakdowns, and central heating issues. “If you have any concerns about your boiler, including landlord certificates, I’m your man.

I always look after my customers; I like to provide not only installations but also annual servicing so boilers are kept in tip top condition.” Marcus says that it was a big decision to leave his previous employer after 30 years but he’s enjoying the challenge and freedom of choice. He is working towards building a family business and is hoping his children will be interested in joining him. “I’ve been lucky enough to have had people in my work life like Mick Berry who was a big influence on me.

He was very much a father figure to me at work and I learnt a lot from him. Now I’d like to do the same with my business once it’s established.”

Football has also played a large part of Marcus’ life, he played at county level and for Thetford Town at one time.

He even played for the British Gas National team and competed overseas.

Competition Success For Young Dancers After over a year's worth of Zoom classes and online dance competitions, the Ashley Dance Company (based at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre in Thetford) finally took to the floor for their first live dance competition in Peterborough last weekend. Between dancers; Teiya-Mae, Kyla, Lakisha & Maddi-Mae, they competed 6 solos and a duet, choreographed by Principal Teacher and ex professional dancer Ashley Smith. All routines competed were placed with the following results x1 1st, x3 2nd, x2 4th and a 5th place resulting in 8 trophies being brought home. t t t r

Ashley said “I am incredibly proud of my girls for their dedication and hard work since we opened our school April 2019, particularly over the past 12 months or so where we’ve been in and out of the lockdowns. They have remained so positive throughout, kept up with their training and the results and feedback we received from the competition just proves how fantastic they all are.

Another dancer, Maddi-Mae Humphrey aged 15 who has been training with Ashley for around 7 years said “It was lovely to finally be at a live competition and to watch other studios perform. All the feedback we received was great and will help set us up for our next competition. We have the best dance teacher around!”.

Club Seeks Players And Coaches

Thetford Bulldogs is a thriving Football Club and one of the largest independently run youth football development clubs in the area. The club prides itself in making football accessible to everyone.

Currently the club is looking for players to join the U14 Belles. They train on a Monday evening for 6-7pm at Thetford Sports Centre all weather pitch.

Games are on a Sunday in the Norfolk Woman and Girls Football League. Football is great for everyone, not only is it good exercise, but it’s also great for your mental health. Thetford Bulldogs FC is the perfect place to have fun and make new friends in a safe environment.

England Call For Young Thetford Bowler Thetford Short Mat Bowls Club is very proud of our young player, Chloe Suffolk, age 13. Chloe recently travelled to Solihull to represent Norfolk in the National U18 Championships and acquitted herself so well that the England Manager has invited her to join the England U21 squad.

The club is also looking for new coaches due to the number of children wanting to join the club.

“We never want to turn a child away, but we are so overwhelmed that we desperately need more coaches to volunteer,” Explained Kirsty Turner, Club Secretary, Child Welfare Officer and Team Manager “Becoming a coach is really rewarding, all of our coaches are DBS checked and we help our coaches get their level 1 coaching badge if they haven’t achieved it yet.”

Chloe said “I was delighted to be chosen to play for Norfolk and did my best and couldn’t believe it when I was asked to join the England squad. It’s all happened so fast, but it’s really exciting. I love playing bowls and hopefully if I keep playing well, I can keep doing Thetford proud.”
