maintained the high energy as Harwood arena was packed with excited students who enjoyed a performance by Kean Dance Team (KDT) and later ventured outside for colorful fireworks, for the homecoming pep-rally. As the night came to an end students gathered in downs hall for the homecoming dance party, and passed the time as they anticipated the Saturday game and tailgating events.

She has served as a youth group leader for Immaculate Conception’s youth group for three years and a catechist teaching fourth through sixth graders. Herrera makes it clear that “leadership to me means being able to guide not only [you], but others as well.” When Herrera graduates from Kean University, she plans to become a law enforcement officer.
Anyone can call themselves a leader but to actually prove it, is the real task. All of the candidates that were running were worthy of the position but their peers felt that only some were actually deserving. As a student leader, they are responsible for voicing concerns of the freshman class and to lead their fellow peers through example and change.
“I would like the students to know that they should feel comfortable to be able to come up to any member of our team and talk about any ideas or concerns they may have. After all we are here to hear your voices and I would also like to get to know each and every one of my classmates. So if you see any one of us down cougar walk or anywhere else on campus please don't be shy and say hi,” said Herrera.
Out of the five candidates running for the freshman class president, Jennifer Herrera was the person that stood out the most. Herrera is a criminal
Out of the three candidates running for vice president, Canela Corrales was the candidate that rose on top. Corrales is an English major who plans
on pursing her career as a high school teacher. “As most of Kean [University] students are commuters, such as myself, I hope to increase and encourage more student [to get] involved on and off campus among our freshman class. She believes that everyone has something to offer and she takes great pride in getting involved with her peers. She hopes to enhance student interaction and set a sense of a close knit community. She also wants to aid the freshman class members who feel overwhelmed with the demands that the college life bring. “I look forward to getting to know all of the freshman class cougars throughout the semester. Don't be afraid to approach me if you have any questions or concerns .. I cannot thank all of those who helped and supported me throughout my campaign enough. I feel extremely honored to have the opportunity to represent my freshman class and have felt overwhelmed by the amount of love I have received from the student body following my induction into office! I cannot wait for the great things to come,” said Corrales. The election results did not stop at president and vice president; Megane Clerge won freshman class treasurer and Laura Santos won freshman class secretary. Qianah Muwakkil Heaven, Kayla Walker, Roshorn Shivers and Gabie Bonilla all won the freshman class representatives’ positions. Each winner plans to bring their own type of flare to the freshman class but they all plan to help their peers and have them express their concerns through them. Each winner is excited and eager to start their new position. It seems that the freshman class of 2019 will be in good hands.

round 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2015, students of all different ages filed excitedly into Hardwood Arena for the annual homecoming weekend pep-rally sponsored by The Student Organization. Hosted by Damion Wilson and Julian Kennebrew, the pep-rally was a rambunctious and entertaining couple of hours starring a truly dynamic duo. Upon entrance to Harwood Arena, students received raffle tickets that could be exchanged for various items of Kean University merchandise but with so many free giveaways, it was hard to know where to begin. But these giveaways only contributed to the real meaning of the pep-rally: school spirit. The gym of Harwood Arena was overwhelmed with the colors of blue, silver, and an unofficial color of Kean University: white. Everywhere one looked, Kean University pride radiated off of every surface. From sports jerseys, to t-shirts, to morph suits, to foam fingers, the students of Kean University expressed their admiration for their school in every way they possibly could. One student, Kimberly Tadiello, a senior education and Earth Science major, conveyed what it is like to be apart of the Kean family: “Kean is a really close-knit community that I am proud to be apart of,” said she. One focus of the night was a component important to all major universities: sports. The football team alone took up an entire section of the bleachers. Hands down, Kean Football was the source of most of the commotion at the pep-rally. Senior Sociology major and wide receiver, Qaudir Johnson said that the team always brings their A-game.

“We’re a family, I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” said Johnson over excited screams and cheers from the rest of his teammates. Besides the football team, all members of Kean University sports were honored with recognition and time allotted to debut their own videos showcasing their team. Some were exceptional and serious (like female lacrosse and men’s football), showing an intimidating side to the game but some, such as the women’s soccer team had the crowd near tears in laughter. Creatively, the girls clipped together videos of the players using Dubsmash, a lip-syncing app that provides users with funny snippets to mouth the words to something, which no one was expecting from a college sports team. The night was entertaining to say the least. Multiple contests were held throughout the pep-rally such as a dance competition, a basketball competition, a singing competition, class versus class tug-of-war, and most importantly, the relay.
