tudents mingling, music playing and dancing: this was the scene of the first day of Unity Week 2011 at Kean University. Held in the University Center atrium on Monday, March 21, the event was attended by scores of students, including members of the Kean University Historical Society, the accounting club, the African Students Association, the American Sign Language club, the Muslim Student Association, the Middle Eastern South Asian Association, the Kean University Gay Alliance Reformation, Kean University Council for Exceptional

Children, the human rights club and the Kean University Chapter of the American Meteorological Association. As students toured the atrium, they were given the opportunity to learn about Student Organization, as well as the different funded and non-funded groups featured at the university. They were also treated to candies, snacks and engaging mini-experiments. According to Dare Thompson, the president of Student Organization, “Unity Week represents cohesion, learning about, accepting and embracing different cultures.” Dr. Dawood Farahi, the president of Kean University, agreed and added that the diversity of students and employees at Kean is what makes the campus so great. Benito Nieves, vice president of funded groups for Student Organization, pointed out that one of the most exceptional things about Unity Week is that since its beginning to 2011, the week, which features various events that elaborate on different cultures and practices, has adapted and expanded. The event continues to do so today, reflecting the growth and development of Kean.

hen asked to name her favorite song, Lauren Petrucelli’s sky blue eyes lit up with excitement. After thumbing through her iPod for a moment, Petrucelli pointed out “Take Over Control”, a dance music piece by Dutch recording artist, Eva Simons. “Whenever my friends and I are going out, we listen to it on the way,” she said excitedly. The energetic song provides a fitting soundtrack for the Kean University sophomore’s highly active lifestyle. Born and raised in the northern New Jersey town of Wood-Ridge, Petrucelli has always held a mighty passion for sports. During Lauren Petrucelli her scholastic career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, Petrucelli played softball, basketball and tennis. She participated in track and field as well. In continuing her education at Kean University, the commuter student has kept her racquet in hand; she now competes as a member of the women’s tennis team. Of the classes that she has taken so far at Kean, Petrucelli reflects fondly upon psychology 1000 and principles of marketing. She usually passes time in-between classes by relaxing with her iPod at one of the many campus lounge areas. She might also be spotted in the university computer labs where she finishes homework assignments, or at the university center cafeteria, where her meal-of-choice is pasta and soup.
