CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

6256 SHARON HILLS ROAD

Follow the long drive up to the top of the gentle hill and where it levels off, you find this lovely French Baroque estate, hidden on three private acres in SouthPark’s oldest neighborhood. Its smooth concrete façade and manmade slate tile roof creates a bold presence that is softened by elegant gas lanterns, decorative wall fountains, and a welcoming broad front terrace. Don’t be fooled by its Neo-Classical façade, this house functions perfectly for modern living.

The house stands in the middle of a magnificent lawn, surrounded by mature woods that are filled with majestic White Oaks and Carolina Pines. The current owners designed the house with its natural setting in mind and only removed one tree in the process. On one of the highest points in Mecklenburg County, you would never guess that you are minutes from Southpark and a short distance from Uptown Charlotte.

FOYER

Enter by way of the covered entry past two Doric columns through the custom doors. Actually, the whole house is customized, tailored for these original owners by the renown residential designer, Frank Smith. Implementing timeless elements of design, Smith creates a house that is as comfortable as it is stunning. Distinctive moldings, lighting, made-to-order window and doors and superb hardware and natural stones accentuate his vision to build a house that was made to last. The main level has 11’ ceilings, thick cased openings, and deep moldings. French doors made of 2” mahogany are at all of the entrances. They give both beauty and light to the interior and open wide for amazing entertaining.

Step into the magnificent two-story foyer defined by a grand curved stairwell, crowned with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and cove lighting. Standing on the painted checkerboard wood floor, you instantly feel the axis of the house and its symmetry that is repeated again and again. As you tour, you notice music throughout the house and in its outdoor living spaces, both front and back.

DINING ROOM & WINE CELLAR

To your left is the formal dining room with a fireplace surround of cast concrete, backed by colorful herring-bone brick which is found in all of the home’s four fireboxes. A wall of mirrors adds to this room’s magic. The aged brass grate is filled with gas coals and the same is found in the study, the room to the right of the foyer. Here, dark, wood-paneled walls create a handsome, cozy and intimate room.

From the foyer, straight ahead you see past the great room to the covered porch and beyond. As you walk through the arched opening, you may miss the hidden doors for the coat closet and the wine cellar. This hidden wine cave is climatized and has an iron lantern and sconces and a floor laid with re-claimed brick.

POWDER ROOM, BAR, & OFFICE

Continuing, you arrive at the middle hallway that creates a thoughtful transition from the formal to the informal living spaces. To your right down the hall is the private powder room, tucked away from the common rooms. It has equestrian wallpaper and an iron lantern, and its vanity is another custom piece with wall mounted iron fixtures.

To your left down the hallway, you find the handsome bar, fully equipped with a copper sink and a vintage faucet, a wine cooler, an icemaker, and cabinets with glass shelves and lighting. The bar area has two customized closets for stemware and provisions. Across the hall bedside the dining room entrance is the entertainer’s linen and china closet equipped with shelves and drawers. Continuing to the left, you arrive at the cornered home office that gives its occupant the lovely views of the front and side yard and abundant workspace and storage.

In the rear foyer, you find the pool’s changing room and another lovely half bath with its vintage 1920’s design using Carrera marble on the sink and floor. Here you can also access the covered niche for grilling.

GREAT ROOM

The great room is the center of the house with three pairs of gorgeous arched French doors that open to the covered terraced porch. The substantial fireplace anchors the room under its deeply coffered ceiling and is flanked by custom cabinetry tailored for the room. A wide arched cased opening to the kitchen and breakfast niche helps to define the two spaces.

KITCHEN

The kitchen is a real cook’s dream as it has both beauty and function. The large island with its deep and wide sink has ample depth to double as a full breakfast bar. You find timeless cabinetry with under the counter lighting, a 48” Viking duel fuel range, a pot filler, and a commercial grade warming drawer. Don’t miss the hidden appliance garages. It is also equipped with two dishwashers, instant hot water at the sink, a Viking tower freezer and a tower refrigerator. Between these is another beautiful work counter with nine drawers. From here enjoy views of the side entrance covered porch and the garage courtyard. There is also a walk-in pantry. The breakfast room overlooks the backyard and pool. Again, you find those great arched doors that take you to the covered porch.

MASTER SUITE

Far removed is the romantic master retreat — a “room with a view” that stretches past the pool and its groomed back yard, to the woods. Unique custom panels for the French doors offer privacy from the porch. The two exquisite baths are separated by the exercise room and laundry closet. Her bath is bathed in soft colors to complement its Carrera marble. Her Jacuzzi bubble tub sits in front of windows — an evergreen screen creates privacy. Both baths have tremendous walk-in custom closets. His bath is also done in timeless marble and has a tall counter and a marble steam shower. Notice its four niches for bathing products, the whole body shower and deep and long bench.

SECOND LEVEL

From the landing, the barrel vault ceiling is carried to the billiard room, accentuated by soft cove lighting. Huge arched windows overlook the copper roof on the porch and there is a deep game closet. Double doors to the second bonus/media room that is also used as an over-flow bedroom during the holidays. The half bath across the hall can easily add a shower.

The other secondary bedrooms have baths finished in Carrera marble and chrome, and all have walk-in closets. The rear right bedroom has a long walk-in closet and an access door to one of the many attics.

The laundry room has a long folding counter with hidden outlets and a deep sink. Here you find access to the sizable walk-up attic.

The back hallway makes a fun art gallery that leads to the stepdown attic, available for future finished space. The rear stairwell is naturally lit by two windows.

OUTDOOR LIVING

With the help of Joyner/Benfield and the late John Byrd, the owner preserved the natural landscape with its matured thickets, bushes and trees surrounding the house’s more formal gardens. The symmetry of the house is reflected by its balanced placement of the pool, centered on the axis of the home. The pool is the focal point. Its cast concrete decking has an intentional simplicity and there is plenty of room for sunning, dining, or relaxing around the fireplace. Steppingstones seeded with miniature Mondo grass break up the strong concrete and provide transition to the covered terrace. Formal gardens lined with boxwood on both sides of the porch. Artful lighting and six fountains, three on each side of the pool create a magical image at night. Step down to the cottage vegetable garden — deer-proofed by its whimsical enclosure.

GARAGE COURT

The garage court has a scored concrete pattern and provides ample turnaround space and additional parking between the two over-sized 2-car garages. Steppingstones lead to the kitchen garden found on the edge of the woods.

Everything is just enough and not too much. This special residence looks like it has been here for a long time, a rare find and a special opportunity in the New South.
