Editor’s letter Hello to all you lovely ladies and gentlemen who I know read the Anne Furbank newsletter. Actually I think, like the shop, it has grown to a little more than a newsletter today, but I can’t quite get out of the habit of calling it a newsletter, so whether you think of it as a newsletter, magazine or brochure I am for the time being going to stick with newsletter. Now I am going to slightly contradict myself here as, although it has grown, you may have noticed that this autumn newsletter is slightly thinner than the spring one. There is good reason which has largely been brought about by all your feedback. You like the newsletter, which is great, but only receiving it twice a year does limit us rather to focusing on the time of year when it goes to print. Our spring issue drops on your doorstep in February and the autumn one in August so, as we have four seasons, we have decided to make our magazine a quarterly production with a spring, summer,
autumn and winter issue. I like to keep myself busy! We’ve changed the look a little, as you can see, as it is normally Annie who welcomes you to delve into the pages. Have no fear – she is still here and will impart her wise words to you. We’ve introduced some new features including ‘Notes from the Coffee Bar’ by Helen Galer who looks after the coffee bar every week and has some great stories to tell. We will have a guest feature writer to give a broader view on the fashion world and we’ve added in a little competition for you to enter and you might win a £50 gift voucher. Anyway, enough from me and, although I am not on the shop floor all the time, it is great to see you when I am and I love the correspondence pre and post all our fashion shows.

Letter from Annie Our seasons have a habit of throwing everything at us, as this summer has proven, with June being a little on the soggy side so our feature on coats seems apt for this edition of the AF newsletter. We do, however, still have seasons and the autumn collections are looking fab. There’s colour, Prince of Wales checks and plenty of options to layer which is a great tool for the transition from summer to autumn.
I’m looking forward to our Fashion Events with a few new ones including Fashion for the Fuller Figure. I know, from the feedback that we get, you like to see a ‘real woman’ in our fashion shows. At the hotel we will be heading to the Caribbean in September and Spain in October for our theme nights which are great fun, with truly delicious food, a glass of wine and all for £19. These nights are popular so make sure you book ahead. In the shop we have wished Ann Storey a happy retirement, and Julia Fysh, who looked after your

chargecard accounts, good luck as she moved on to a full-time role with a construction company. We welcome Fiona Berry and Alexa Jones to our sales team. Fiona was introduced to the shop a number of years ago by her mother and has been a great supporter of ours. Some of you will recognise Alexa from our Newmarket shop as she was the Manager there, so do come and say hello. She will be thrilled to catch up with you. We also welcome Wendy Wallace to our accounts department. Although you might not see her that much she will be your point of contact, along with Bernadette, should you have any account queries. Personally I am still going strong, running and now cycling and swimming and hoping to do my first triathlon before the end of the year. I am lucky to love what I do and have that same sense of passion for the business that I did 35 years ago, although I do have the advantage today of having experience under my belt!

On July 19th 2016, one day after her 95th birthday, my sister Christine and I lost our beautiful mother, Barbara. She had been unwell for a little while but was still fiercely independent and lived alone at home in Godmanchester where she died with Christine and me by her side, just what she had wanted. She was a remarkable lady; kind, loving, caring, brave, elegant and so proud of her whole family. She worked in the shop until the age of 85, having modelled in our fashion shows for many years and always amazing us by wearing her iconic killer heels at every single opportunity. She had a passion for fashion and certainly passed that on to me thank you mum. Barbara, Annie’s mum

At our Fashion for the Fuller Figure Shows we will show you just how fabulous you can look. We will give you some great ideas from the new Autumn collections whether it is muted, understated looks or an outfit packed with a bit of punch with bold patterns and statement colours. ‘We all have body issues – too tall, too short, bum too big, tummy too wobbly, boobs too small, boobs too big but then we are our own harshest critic,’ said Becky Furbank. ‘How we see ourselves isn’t necessarily what other people see.Take the recent Dove adverts
as a good example;They asked a criminal sketch artist to draw a picture of someone using the description they gave of themselves and then compared it to a picture done using a description given by someone else.The results were incredible!’ ‘Body image is a lot about confidence. Being confident in your own skin shows. ROYALTY BACK IN FASHION HRH The Duchess of Cambridge was featured on the front page of the centenary edition of Vogue in April affirming her status as an influential fashion icon. 108 miles walking the spectacular South Downs Way in 6 days! I have to confess to being a little bit blasé when Richard planned a holiday walking the South Downs Way, Winchester to Eastbourne. I’m fit, I run and now cycle and swim so the thought of a six day walking holiday really didn’t phase me, even when Richard said that it was going to be 108 miles - I’d run more than that, so walking it was going to be a doddle. Oh how wrong I was! Off we set myself, Richard, and girlfriends Sheila, Sam and cousin Louise. We did have the most fabulous time and saw England at its best. Mid-May, the countryside was in full bloom and yes the sun was shining, but boy was I glad of the glass of wine at the end of each day, the ibrufen for my inflamed calves and ice wraps for my ankles.

Does a size cube really matter? There are many standard sizing systems around the world for clothing and they do not have to be converted to a UK standard sizing system.
T
he EU have introduced standard sizing but have been unsuccessful in getting all countries to adopt it for womenswear.
‘I have brands in the shop from all over the world and the size variation can be quite dramatic,’ said Becky. ‘When Carolyn modelled for us at the Repeat fashion show she wore everything from a size 10 to a size 16!’ So does size really matter? Forget weight and Body Mass Index, size is the latest way of measuring self-worth.
Sometimes you can be hugely flattered when you think of yourself as a size 14 and can wear a size 10, on the reverse it can cause angst when you are having to go up a size or two. Tammy Kinley, PhD associate professor of merchandising at the University of North Texas, who has studied the vanity-sizing phenomenon researched the different measurements of 1000 pairs of women’s trousers and found as much as 8 ½ inch variation in the size 4 waist. ‘Our size cubes are a guide only and you really need to listen to the advice of the girls and take their word for it when they tell you something is coming up big or small.’ ‘My advice is, if size really is an issue then cut out the label and concentrate on what looks good and fits well and not what the manufacturers are saying the size is,’ said Becky.

Notes from Helen’s coffee bar Our wonderful Saturday lady, Helen, keeps partners, husbands, mothers and children entertained at her coffee bar each Saturday while the ladies shop.
I
t is amazing what is divulged in that small space. Here is the first of her new column ‘Notes from Helen’s coffee bar’.
While serving drinks at my coffee bar, the door opens to many a conversation. While entertaining and looking after the gentlemen while their ladies shop I have spent hours with some very regular faces and we must have covered every conversation going in my 13 years. 28
This year on a Saturday in May, I was met at the coffee bar by a smiley face waving at me “Hello, I’ve brought my wife for her annual visit. We’re passing through from Hertfordshire to March. How are you?” I could not place this man immediately and needed to think quick. With one question I remembered him immediately from the previous year and years before that. He was a member of the RAF Pathfinders, Bomber Command and yes indeed he was heading to their annual gathering and memorial service in

March, Cambridgeshire. Finishing off the week-end with a lunch and a fly past in Warboys on the Sunday.
“ With one question I remembered him immediately from the previous year and years before that. He was a member of the RAF Pathfinders, Bomber Command.” Whilst his lady shopped, making the most of her annual visit. Myself and the gentleman talked and talked. Discussing the church service, the evening reunion meal at the local hotel. We talked of the significant aircraft of the Spitfires and Lancaster’s both taken part in previous years flyovers at these annual meetings.

Both of us remembering our grandparents, enjoying the moment and commenting on the aircraft by text, suddenly we were back in 2016, years on from the time when this aircraft first flew. After all the excitement we parted company with the gentleman and his wife with a “Thank you for coming. Hope to see you next year. Same time same place” Peterborough, Brampton, Wyton, March, Warboys and the various significance to these locations. When the gentleman was called to assist his lady with paying and carrying of her items we parted Company. With the shake of a hand I was invited to join the gentleman as his guest, to join him and fellow Pathfinders the following day to see the flyover of the Dakota. This year’s chosen plane. He told me where they would be and what time and off he went for the evening reunion to swap stories and join the remembrance service on the Sunday morning. On the Sunday, the sun shone, my husband was watching a day of football again, so off I went with my invitation. Following the balloons tied to the trees leading into the car park I was met with a group of people heading the recreation field many gentlemen supporting very significant lapel badges. Signifying the Pathfinder foundation. I knew I was in the right place.

Lorela’s been to Rhône France’s Rhône valley is very well established as a fantastic wine producing region – who hasn’t heard of Cotes de Rhône!

longside the big wine producers are some less well known vineyards that each year create the most delicious wines. Assitant Manager, Lorela Movileanu, was lucky enough to accompany Philip Amps, from Amps Fine Wines on a trip to three of the regions star wine producers. Chateau L’Ermitage vineyard, set in 80 hectares on the Mediterranean side of Costieres, was the first stop. Sitting on some very fine soil enables it to grow fantastic grapes for the wines. Its heritage is proof of this with traces of the vineyard dating back to the 7th Century.

Domaine Boutinot vineyard, near Carraine village in Rhône (Bin 19 on the George wine list) and Gigondas vineyards – Gigondas Haute Marone, also on the list. As always, these trips are truly fascinating. The passion that the wine growers have for perfecting their crop and their final product is inspiring. Cake of the Day Lemon, sultana and yoghurt cake There is nothing like a bit of comfort food as the days start to get shorter and there is no better comfort food than cake. Here is one of Amina’s bakes for you to try at home. Ingredients:
Method:
3 large eggs 400g caster sugar 450g plain flour 250ml natural yoghurt 150ml vegetable oil 2 teaspoons baking powder Pinch of salt 60g sultanas Zest of 1 lemon Vanilla extract
• Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F or 180 degrees C
Glaze:
To make the glaze:
Juice of 2 lemons
• Put the lemon juice and sugar into a small saucepan
200g sugar
• Stir until the sugar has dissolved
• Whisk together the eggs and sugar and vegetable oil • Add yoghurt, lemon zest and vanilla extract • Slowly whisk the flour, baking powder and salt into the wet ingredients • Add sultanas (soaked in hot water for 5 mins) • Pour cake mix into tin • Bake for 40/50 minutes until risen and golden
• When the cake is done, allow it to cool in the tin • Pour over the lemon and sugar glaze

The gin renaissance continues Gin is set to take over from Vodka as its popularity continues to rise and with the new artisan distilleries producing some truly fantastic flavours it looks like it will stay at the top for a while.
Gin used to be seen as the Vodka for grown-ups but its appeal to a younger generation has certainly helped boost the sales nationally. Its juniper base can be played with quite well, adding in different botanical flavours to create some truly unique tastes.
We aren’t quite in the trendy hotspots of the capital but at The George we do like our gins and with 3 different ones to choose from – Bombay, Hendricks and Copper House – it might even be worth booking a room so that you can sample them all!
