HOT TAKES

WHILE EDITING THE “FANTASY KITCHENS & BATHS” CHAPTER OF THIS YEAR’S Hamptons Design Guide, I think I laughed out loud when I read designer Roric Tobin’s hot take that subway tile can “look like a cheap subdivision,” while “bold, trendy tile looks like a spec house based on HGTV.” Then in his response, decorator Scott Sanders says he is a “huge fan” of subway tile for a traditional look. (Flip to page 92 to see how Sanders recommends making them more interesting.)

Similarly, I was surprised by our designers’ “Tips for a Classic Hamptons Look/Style” in Chapter 5 “Ready, Set, Decorate!” (page 132). Spoiler alert, there’s no slipcovered sofa plus sisal rug plus hydrangea blue equals East End–chic formula. Inside and out, this diverse community is embracing an array of home styles and landscapes. For example, our panel of landscape architects is shying away from perfectly manicured gardens and rolling lawns in favor of native plants and natural meadows.

So, if you had an idea of what your Hamptons home should be, you might be surprised that our guide is not a compendium of hard-and-fast rules. Rather, it’s a conversation of (often differing) opinions from the East End’s most influential design professionals. Like browsing the boutiques of East Hampton and selecting your favorite home accessories (we can help you there, too, on page 154), you must follow the advice that resonates with your tastes and family’s specific needs. Interior designer Philip Gorrivan perhaps said it best: “The beauty of the Hamptons is that there’s not just one look. Each home is very personal.” Welcome to the conversation.

CHECKING IT TWICE

WELCOME TO THE SEVENTH EDITION OF THE HAMPTONS DESIGN GUIDE, which serves as a glorious introduction to the design professionals and manufacturers in the Hamptons. Sized to fit into a tote bag, it can accompany you for the next year as you search for all things design. Eagerly awaited inside is “The C&G List” which appears first in The Hamptons Design Guide on page 161. (To see the digital edition of this guide or to buy a print edition, visit cottagesgardens.com.)

“The C&G List” is a curated showcase of architects, interior designers, garden designers and builders whose work has been featured in HC&G over the past year. It is a testament to the talent, vision and hard work of the professionals who shape the aesthetic of the Hamptons.

For architects, being part of this compilation underlines their ability to blend innovation with the sensibilities of the Hamptons lifestyle. Interior designers are celebrated for creating spaces that resonate with comfort, beauty and a sense of place. Garden designers and builders, too, are recognized for their skill in harmonizing the natural with the constructed, crafting landscapes and structures that enhance the storied tapestry of this area.

Crucially, “The C&G List” is not determined by editorial preference nor can it be influenced by advertiser or commercial interests. It is earned purely through merit—a reflection of the magazine’s commitment to the highest standards of design excellence. This ensures that each name featured is there because of their contribution to the Hamptons design scene, making it a genuine honor and a mark of distinction in the industry.

Moreover, “The C&G List” serves as a trusted guide for anyone looking to commission work that is of the highest caliber, underscored by a magazine dubbed the Gold Standard, that has chronicled the region’s design for 22 years.

Our experts agree: The Hamptons real estate market is unlike any other. If you’re looking to buy, rent or sell on the East End and need some guidance navigating this complex dynamic, look no further.

CHAPTER ONE
33 COTTAGESGARDENS.COM
FROM “FAMILY AFFAIR,” SEPTEMBER 2023. PHOTOGRAPH BY CHRIS COE.

WHAT ARE THE CURRENT TRENDS IN HOME DESIGN?

“Some trends have changed from when everyone wanted a completely open layout and communal living. COVID changed that. Now people want more private rooms, which would include a separate place to work.”

—Jack Pearson
“I think very modern and very traditional are sort of merged together for a Hamptons house: open spaces, living areas to entertain, really cool backyards, and places people can bring friends and family together.”
—Jennifer Wilson

“Color! Gone are the days of white walls and a few blue accents. Homes are now dedicated to truly living, integrating technology into spaces that make us feel good about ourselves, the planet and being together. Incorporating wellness into our homes has also become ultra-important. Cold plunge, sauna, thoughtful outdoor spaces, even vitamin-C infused showers are now being requested for savvy home buyers. Multi-generational spaces are also another huge consideration for people buying today.” —Ali Graham

“Various architectural styles prevail in the Hamptons today. Village life tends to favor a cozy, warm, beach-inspired design. Large Shingle-style homes, reminiscent of timeless architecture, add a touch of grandeur with scaled accents. Considering new flood elevations in coastal areas, ultra-modern designs maximize square footage while adhering to pyramid laws and height restrictions. These modern structures often incorporate diverse textures, such as cement, stucco, metal and warm woods. The prevailing color palettes are neutrals, marking a departure from the gray tones popularized a decade ago.”

“People are still looking for waterfront properties. With increased car traffic, quiet properties are in demand.”

IS A FIXER-UPPER WORTH THE INVESTMENT?

“AFFIRMATIVE, IF ONE CAN BE LOCATED. IN THIS VAST MARKET, THERE ARE INVESTORS AND BUILDERS IN SEARCH OF TEAR-DOWNS AND FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYERS COMPETING. FOR THOSE SEEKING THE POSSIBILITY OF CREATING A STREAM OF RENTAL INCOME, A PROPERTY TO FLIP, OR FOCUSING ON LAND VALUE, INVESTORS NEED TO BE MINDFUL OF CONSTRUCTION COSTS AND/OR POTENTIAL RENTAL RETURNS.”

“Yes! It is all relative. Buying for investment is so rewarding and tangible. Buying to fix up an old place that you really love is the ultimate reward—you get to live in a place that you truly made your own.”

“Ultimately,

clients should navigate the market to get exactly what they love, and for some, the only way they’ll be able to get what they love is by customizing it.” —Tal Alexander

“Yes, for sure. If you bought a fixer-upper, you will have much more equity in your home than if you buy a home completely done.”
—Jennifer Wilson
OPPOSITE: TIM LENZ (JULY 1, 2023) 35 COTTAGESGARDENS.COM

WHAT ARE DEAL-BREAKERS FOR CLIENTS NOW?

“Some hurdles include buried oil tanks, outdated certificates of occupancy, excessive clearing, mortgage contingencies, unexpected inspection findings, or the contingent sale of their current home. Skilled local attorneys often prove effective in resolving these issues.”

“Any time a client is being misguided and they think a house is priced more than it’s worth, a deal is not going to happen.”

“People are trying to avoid bidding wars. Often one party will wait it out; they’re not in that competitive spirit anymore.” —Jack Pearson

“I BELIEVE CLIENTS WANT MOVE-IN READY HOMES. IF THEY ARE TAKING ON A PROJECT, ALL THE CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY ISSUES AND BUILDING PERMITS HAVE TO BE READY TO GO.”

YOUR HAMPTONS DREAM HOME 36 THE HAMPTONS DESIGN GUIDE 2024

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR NEW HOMEOWNERS?

“With homes purchased for vacation or weekend use, consider hiring a caretaker with flexibility to meet your needs. Caretakers often have reliable subcontractors, manage maintenance issues, and efficiently organize the day-to-day running of the house and outdoor space.” —Jane Babcock

“Keep your home current and marketable for rent.”
—Jennifer Wilson

“DON’T WAIT TO TRY AND TIME THE MARKET! IN THE SIX MONTHS YOU WAITED TRYING TO GET A BETTER INTEREST RATE, YOU COULD HAVE HAD $50,000 IN EQUITY BUILT UP IN YOUR HOME (YOU CAN ALWAYS REFINANCE YOUR MORTGAGE).”

—Ali Graham

“Make sure you have a great property manager!” —Tal Alexander

5 TOP 5 WHAT CLIENTS WANT NOW

1 “Lower-level amenities (cinema, gym, wine storage, guest bedrooms).”

—Ali Graham

2 “Location, location, location.”

—Jane Babcock

3

“Prime real estate in the Hamptons: easy off the highway and close to the ocean.”

—Tal Alexander

4 “New construction or something that’s been gut renovated.”

—Jack Pearson

5 “Being able to walk or bike to a village and beaches; it’s all about lifestyle.”

—Jennifer Wilson

IS IT CURRENTLY A BUYER’S MARKET OR A SELLER’S MARKET?

“One could argue that it is still a seller’s market, as inventory remains low.”

“IT’S A COMBINATION OF BOTH. THE SELLER’S MARKET HAS EXPERIENCED A SHIFT SINCE COVID, BUT PRICES HAVE NOT SEEN A SIGNIFICANT DROP DUE TO HISTORICALLY LOW INVENTORY. HOWEVER, POTENTIAL BUYERS ARE NOT AS AGGRESSIVE, OBSERVING THAT PROPERTIES ON THE MARKET ARE LINGERING LONGER. AS INTEREST DECREASES, MORE BUYERS ARE EXPECTED TO RETURN. MY ADVICE IS, IF YOU FIND A PROPERTY YOU LIKE, CONSIDER MOVING ON IT, AND YOU CAN EXPLORE REFINANCING DOWN THE ROAD.”

“I would say it’s somewhat of an even level playing field. Coming out of the last peak, we had a recordbreaking year in 2021. In the Hamptons, so much of quality inventory was absorbed. Heading into the future, inventory will remain tight, so many trades are happening off the market.”

YOUR HAMPTONS DREAM HOME 38 THE HAMPTONS DESIGN GUIDE 2024

HOW IS REAL ESTATE IN THE HAMPTONS DIFFERENT FROM ANYWHERE ELSE?

“It’s predominantly a second-home market, situated in one of the most expensive zip codes in the country. Sale prices are unparalleled compared to most parts of the country. I consider myself fortunate to have been in this business for over 25 years, witnessing its constant evolution.” —Jane Babcock

“YOU CAN NEVER OVER IMPROVE YOUR PROPERTY IN THE HAMPTONS. THERE IS SUCH A LIMITED SUPPLY OF HOMES FOR SALE, GEOGRAPHY AND SPACE. IF YOU IMPROVE AND RENOVATE AND LANDSCAPE, YOU’LL ALWAYS GET YOUR MONEY BACK.”

“If you look at our towns, they’re so beautiful, the villages are so beautiful. I don’t know where you can find beaches like we have with the New England feel of our villages.” —Jennifer Wilson

“Oh wow, where do I begin? The rich history of the homes in the Hamptons is legendary: the parties that have been hosted, the movies that have been made, the culinary excellence, the world-class beaches and social scene, it is impossible to recreate. We really do help people turn their dreams into reality.”

OPPOSITE: READ MCKENDREE (JULY 1, 2023); THIS PAGE (TOP TO BOTTOM): MICHAEL STAVARIDIS (AUGUST 15, 2023), READ MCKENDREE (AUGUST 1, 2023) 39 COTTAGESGARDENS.COM

WHAT MAKES THE HAMPTONS SUCH AN UNUSUAL AND INTERESTING REAL ESTATE MARKET?

“The Hamptons real estate market is one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world. There’s only a handful of unique properties south of the highway. Given its proximity to New York City, the Hamptons will always be a destination for the wealthy. There’s a really special charm to the Hamptons, from the landscape to the beaches, and architecture.” —Tal Alexander

“Living within 90 miles of New York City, the people who come out here are so interesting—you have artists and tops of every industry. I think that is an asset to the community and market.” —Jennifer Wilson

“One of the reasons I love this market is the people it attracts. When I think of some of the artists who have occupied homes in the Hamptons, it really inspires me. Architecturally, there is a lot of diversity in the Hamptons—there really is a house for everyone. I grew up in Australia, so proximity to the beach is everything.” —Ali Graham

“THE HAMPTONS HAVE BEEN THE SUMMER PLAYGROUND FOR GENERATIONS, OFFERING A HAVEN FOR SOCIAL EVENTS, FAMILY GATHERINGS, FISHING, SURFING, SAILING, EQUESTRIAN EVENTS, ANTIQUING, GALLERIES AND GARDEN SHOWS.”

YOUR HAMPTONS DREAM HOME 40 THE HAMPTONS DESIGN GUIDE 2024

HOW IS THE MARKET CURRENTLY IMPACTING SALES IN THE HAMPTONS?

“The interest rates have topped out, and there will probably be a big decline in interest rates in 2024. We’ve seen some big trades as supply is limited and demand is still there. There will be a stronger market in 2024 than 2023.” —Tal Alexander

“The median sale price in the Hamptons has increased from this time a year ago, showing continued growth in a slow market. Low inventory has affected the number of homes sold, but we saw a reduction in the number of days it took to sell a home, so that is encouraging news overall.”

“Starting out in 2024, it has been very busy with buyers, interest rates are coming down and people who have been sitting on the sidelines feel more comfortable entering into the market. Prices in 2023 went up even though transactions went down.”

“The year 2023 marked a reset post-COVID. Sales experienced a downturn, with January historically being a slow month. Our primary buyers are cash buyers, and although interest rates don’t directly impact them, they remain aware of the financial market.” —Jane Babcock

“The challenges and nuances that each project brings. The different types of people, heritage, landscape, neighborhoods—all encompassed by the natural scenic beauty of the local coastal vernacular. It’s very gratifying to design and build a successful project that both you and your clients love.”

—Matthew Miller

“DESIGNING AND BUILDING PROJECTS IN THE HAMPTONS HOLDS A UNIQUE ALLURE. THE COMMUNITY’S SOCIAL VIBRANCY SHAPES OUR APPROACH, WITH A FOCUS ON SEAMLESSLY INTEGRATING PRIVATE AND GUEST EXPERIENCES INTO OUR DESIGNS. EACH HAMPTONS PROJECT SERVES AS A CANVAS TO STRETCH OUR CREATIVE BOUNDARIES, OFFERING SOLUTIONS THAT ENHANCE FAMILY LIVING AND CATER TO THE ENTERTAINMENT NEEDS OF BOTH RESIDENTS AND THEIR FRIENDS. THIS SOCIALLY DRIVEN ENVIRONMENT EXTENDS BEYOND RESIDENTIAL SPACES TO THE HOTELS WE DESIGN, MAINTAINING A CONSISTENT THEME. WHAT SETS THE HAMPTONS APART IS THE INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR OF THE COMMUNITY, DEMANDING A HEIGHTENED AWARENESS AND ADHERENCE TO GLOBAL DESIGN STANDARDS.” —Tommy Zung

“Discerning clients, and the ability to practice in a small geographical area and know it well.”—Nilay Oza

“This area benefits from the beauty of the natural landscape combined with a history of innovation when it comes to design and construction. Both trajectories have set up the opportunity to create and explore design in a way that’s not possible in many other places. Alongside having had the good fortune of working with great clients, who respect the design process and are as excited about what we do as we are, we are lucky to work with builders who are proactive, capable and are willing to figure out how to execute the vision.” —Viola Rouhani

WHAT KIND OF BUILDS/ HOME TYPES

ARE NOW TRENDING IN THE HAMPTONS?

“Homes in the Hamptons now trend toward designs that prioritize integrity and legacy. Homeowners seek to create a lasting impact, a legacy that reflects their values and aspirations.”

—Tommy Zung

“I see a resurgence of previous historical styles, with more sustainable and green building techniques. Modern ‘glass box’ oceanfront homes, farmhouse revivals, Dutch colonial estates and a blend of everything in between, but definitely with more consideration to embrace open spaces, natural light and indooroutdoor living.” —Matthew Miller

MATT KISIDAY (AUGUST 1, 2023) 47 COTTAGESGARDENS.COM

WHAT HOMEWORK SHOULD CLIENTS DO BEFORE MEETING WITH AN ARCHITECT?

“It’s always a great idea for the clients to discuss their hopes and wishes for the project internally before meeting an architect. The best projects are the ones where the clients are on the same page with each other and have a shared sensibility that can easily be communicated to the architect. Then, look at the work of various architects to understand the breadth and width of what they are capable of. It does not hurt to have conversations with past clients, if possible. Inspirational images are often helpful with the understanding that they are just that, inspirational.” —Viola Rouhani

“Before meeting with an architect, it's crucial for clients to delve deeply into the architect's body of work. Identify the distinctive elements that resonate with you and are exclusive to that architect. Look for specifics that embody the unique essence of their creations.” —Tommy Zung

“Clients should explore the portfolio, design style and approach of an architect and reach out to those who align with their vision. Have a basic program (desires and goals for the project), general budget and timeline to discuss during the first meeting.” —Matthew Miller

“Clients are typically couples. I advise sitting down as a couple and discussing the house. Really talk about it. What do you want it to be? If you build it, who will come? How long do you intend to dwell in this chapter of your life? Conveying this to your architect gets you to a better place for sure. And on a more practical level, a survey” —Nilay Oza

“Good design: customdesigned elements that add unique character and elevate the project to make it unique and tasteful. High quality, durable materials that fit into the local vernacular. Good workmanship. Energy-efficient features and smart-home technology that can lead to long-term savings and enhance convenience.” —Matthew Miller

“RENEWABLE ENERGY IS ALWAYS A LARGE UPFRONT COST, BUT WORTH ITS VALUE IN MORE WAYS THAN MONETARY ONCE IMPLEMENTED. SOLAR PANELS, GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS, TREES AND ANY OTHER MEASURES TO IMPROVE OUR ENVIRONMENT ARE SO IMPORTANT.” —Viola Rouhani

“Invest in quality materials and embrace elegant details. Channel your resources into essential areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms. These spaces are the core of a home’s seamless experience and deserve the attention to detail that ensures lasting beauty and functionality.” —Tommy Zung

“This really has to be determined case by case. Some buildings have great ‘bones.’ The structure or foundations may be intact enough to use. In other cases, even old historical buildings, once opened up, turn out to be incredibly poorly built, to the point of being hazardous, or more costly to retrofit than to replace. Certain iconic buildings may not be salvageable at all because of the wear and tear of our environment and the realities of wood construction, yet they are important historically. These may benefit from being rebuilt in kind, thereby preserving the importance of time and place, rather than any physical part of the structure.” —Viola Rouhani

“SALVAGE ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS THAT ARE INTEGRAL AND IRREPLACEABLE. IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT PRESERVING A THING BUT CAPTURING A MOMENT, A KEY ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT THAT HOLDS THE ESSENCE OF THE STRUCTURE. BUILD AROUND IT TO WEAVE A NARRATIVE THAT TRANSCENDS TIME.” —Tommy Zung

“It really depends on the project and its overall goals. Any items that can hold their worth at the completion of a project could potentially be salvaged in a rebuild. For example, a structurally sound, dry, well-laid-out foundation could be reused and even expanded on if it functionally and economically made sense to keep it.” —Matthew Miller

“Something old that is hard to reproduce. Foundations are glorified holes in the ground but are unsustainably produced. See if you can reuse/ add to them. It’s not easy, but doing good rarely ever is.” —Nilay Oza

YOU’RE NEARING A PROJECT’S END. WHAT’S THE LAST STEP?

“MAKE

“Since we are both an architecture and interior design firm, the last step may be anything from a final walk-through with the builder, to making sure every piece of art is hung properly and the fridge is stocked.”

“Handing over a fully completed, meticulously inspected final product that exceeds client expectations. Plus, providing comprehensive documentation and maintenance guidelines to maintain the project in the future.” —Matthew Miller

WHAT’S THE OPTIMAL CLIENTARCHITECT RELATIONSHIP?

“Cultivate and preserve trust in your architect, the very reason you sought them out. The optimal interaction is one where the client entrusts the architect with creative freedom, allowing them to shape and guide the vision—a collaborative relationship grounded in mutual respect.” —Tommy Zung

“An open and collaborative relationship with clear communication and respect. A team-focused approach to problem solving and flexibility of design. Consistent and regular communication/site visits to ensure alignment with the evolving design.”
—Matthew Miller

“The optimal client-architect interaction is one of mutual respect. Architecture, especially residential architecture, is a tricky field. Most people have knowledge of living in a house, or in some cases, have had the opportunity to live in many. That makes everyone have some opinions about it. Architects go through years of training, and by the time they’ve been practicing for a decade or two or more, are well versed in the pitfalls and opportunities that design construction brings. Ideally, the client brings their experiences and their hopes or vision for the building at hand to the architect in such a way that allows them to apply their professional abilities to the project and finetune the ideas into a reality that will last a lifetime.” —Viola Rouhani

“I designed an unforgettable house with you, and you pay me. Works every time.” —Nilay Oza

HOW HAS ARCHITECTURE IN THE HAMPTONS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?

“Over the years, the Hamptons have embraced modernism alongside traditional architecture. This shift excites us, as it reflects an evolving architectural conversation in the region.” —Tommy Zung

“It has become bigger. Much Bigger.”
—Nilay Oza

“The Hamptons evolved from its historical farm roots to a heavy influence of Dutch colonial, to the Modernist movement of the late 20th century. The area is currently progressing to more sustainable and green building with a revival of past styles.” —Matthew

KITCHENS 101:

PLAIN WHITE OR BRIGHT AND BOLD?

“I gravitate to a mix of soft white or cream paint-grade cabinets with oak accents in the island or upper cabinets.” —Tara Kantor

“Natural wood.”
“Bright

and bold, why not?

People

spend a lot of time in the kitchen, it should reflect the personality of the homeowner.”

—Scott Sanders

“I’M GOING TO GO PLAIN WHITE HERE. NOTHING CAN DATE A KITCHEN MORE QUICKLY THAN A BOLD AU COURANT STATEMENT. WHEN YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT A PAINT COLOR OR ACCENT WALL IN A LIVING ROOM OR BEDROOM, I SAY GO FOR IT. THOSE ARE EASY TO CHANGE IN A FEW YEARS WHEN YOU’RE READY FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT. BUT NOTHING IS MORE DISRUPTIVE AND COSTLY THAN GUTTING AND REPLACING A KITCHEN, SO YOU WANT YOURS TO BE AS TIMELESS AS POSSIBLE.”

FANTASY KITCHENS & BATHS

“Location, location, location. I think it’s critical that everything in a kitchen should be where you instinctively reach for it. Nothing more frustrating than opening a dozen drawers and cupboards trying to find a plate. If possible, I would tape the layout of the kitchen for your client and have them come and use it during the phase where you’re determining the interior fit-outs with the cabinetmaker.” —Roric Robin

“Hidden storage beneath island seating area, and a separate pantry.”
—Damon Liss

“Slide-out pantries are fantastic if you have tight space. I’m a huge fan of putting cabinets in an island so you can get to them, even if it’s in front of stools.” —Scott Sanders

“I look for unused space to maximize storage capacity wherever possible. If I feel like storage is lacking, and we can’t create more cabinet space, we look internally in the cabinets and add pull-outs and drawer dividers to make the space more useful.”

WHAT ARE SMART WAYS TO INCORPORATE STORAGE? OPEN CONCEPT OR CLOSED?

“I go for an in between option here. I absolutely hate walking into some of these new mega spec houses and seeing living, kitchen and dining in one space. It feels cavernous and strange. That being said, the way most people entertain today, cooking is a communal activity. Even if they’re just there for moral support, it’s nice to have them in the same space.”

—Roric Tobin

“OPEN CONCEPT WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT WHEN YOU ARE COOKING, EVERYONE WILL SEE YOUR BIG MESS…BUT ALSO BE ABLE TO KEEP YOU COMPANY.”

—Tara Kantor

“Both!”
—Damon Liss

“My ideal is a big kitchen, open to a family room and then a separate dining room. The preparation keeps everyone together, but when you go to sit down, you’re focused at the table and each other, not a dirty kitchen.”

—Roric Tobin

“Open concept, everyone ends up in the kitchen, keep it friendly and inviting.”

WHAT ELEMENTS WILL ELEVATE A KITCHEN TO A-PLUS?

“The combination of marble and textured lime wash is one of my favorites. We have been adding lime wash to wall treatments and hoods for many years now to elevate the kitchen space and warm it up.” —Tara Kantor

“STONE-WRAPPED HOOD ENCLOSURE, NATURAL STONE COUNTERTOPS AND BACKSPLASH, CUSTOM MILLWORK DETAILS AND CUSTOM-INTEGRATED STONE SINK.” —Damon Liss

“Really special hardware elevates a nice kitchen. Think leather-wrapped hardware or hammered knobs.” —Scott Sanders

“Lighting and appliances. It’s not just about brand recognition. Someone who cooks (or hires someone to cook for them) needs chef-worthy appliances. Lighting needs to be carefully thoughtout and very adjustable. You need to make sure surfaces are lit and don’t create shadows of someone standing there. When you’re working in the kitchen, you want bright light. When you’re sneaking in for a midnight snack, you don’t want to turn on the lights and feel like you’re ready to perform surgery. Under-cabinet or accent lighting is a great option.” —Roric Tobin

HOW DO YOU ADD PERSONALITY TO A KITCHEN?

“Stone is a perfect way to add personality to a kitchen. A beautiful marble countertop and backsplash is so elegant. Yes, there is more upkeep with marble, but it’s not overwhelming.” —Roric Tobin

“Light fixtures, client’s artwork and open shelving with decorative dinnerware and accessories.” —Damon LIss

“I THINK THE ISLAND IS THE FOCAL POINT OF THE KITCHEN, SO WE TRY TO MAKE SURE THERE IS SOME EXTRA INTEREST THERE, WHETHER IT’S A STATEMENT STONE, FLUTED WOOD DETAILS OR A CURVED RADIUS EDGE.” —Tara Kantor

“I think of it as another room to decorate. You can do it with wallpaper, drapes, fun fabrics and interesting lighting—especially if it’s part of the breakfast room.”

—Scott Sanders

HOW CAN YOU MAKE COOKING A JOY, RATHER THAN A CHORE?

“A thoughtful layout. You will often have multiple things going on in the kitchen at the same time. While someone is whisking away, creating the perfect roux, you don’t want to stop them to pull the roast from the oven. Prep areas should be close enough to bring things easily to the cooktop, but enough away that you have space to work.”

—Roric Tobin

“I LOVE TO ENTERTAIN, SO IT’S ALWAYS A JOY TO COOK IN THE KITCHEN. THAT BEING SAID, I DO LOVE TO LISTEN TO AN UPBEAT PLAYLIST WHILE PREPPING FOR BIG MEALS LIKE THANKSGIVING AND OTHER HOLIDAYS.”

—Tara Kantor “DECORATE SO THE KITCHEN IS A FUN ROOM TO BE IN WITH A LOT OF PERSONALITY. MAKE YOUR KITCHEN SUPER ORGANIZED, SO EVERYTHING YOU USE IS EASY TO GET TO AND IN THE RIGHT SPOT.”

—Scott Sanders

“Beautiful cookware and clever kitchen storage. For cookware appliances and everyday items, it has to be easy-to-clean materials.” —Damon Liss

BACKSPLASH BASICS

“I prefer to carry it up the backsplash for a cohesive look. If you go with a tile, choose carefully. Subway tile makes it look like a cheap subdivision. Bold, trendy tile looks like a spec house based on HGTV. Pick a tile that is timeless. In a super sleek contemporary kitchen, I love reverse painted glass.” —Roric Tobin

“Continuity of countertop material.” —Damon Liss

“In a more traditional kitchen, I’m a huge fan of subway tile. I like them slightly tumbled so they have a patina and feel more interesting. I like having backsplashes that are different from the countertops; it adds detail to the kitchen.” —Scott Sanders

FLOORING FORUM

“Natural wood.” —Damon Liss

COUNTER OPINIONS

“I always let clients know that marble requires maintenance, and even with the new protective treatments, there will be etching. If you are ok with that, I always prefer marble! If not marble, Dekton makes great stain-resistant options for countertops.” —Tara Kantor

“AGAIN, I THINK MARBLE IS A GREAT OPTION. IF YOU DON’T EVER WANT TO WORRY ABOUT IT, THEN QUARTZ IS A GREAT ROUTE. HERE I GO WITH THE ONES THAT LOOK MORE LIKE NATURAL STONE AND NOTHING WITH TOO MUCH SPARKLE.”

—Roric Tobin

“For a reasonably priced countertop, Lapitec is a man-made product. In highgloss white, it’s super clean, very durable and goes with everything. For the higher end, I’m a huge fan of Calacatta marble with a lot of veining.” —Scott Sanders

“QUARTZITE, AND OTHER NATURAL STONE.” —Damon Liss

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO ACCESSORIZE A KITCHEN?

“Large islands and high shelves are a perfect place for this. If you’re a minimalist, perhaps perfectly matched Japanese urns. If you’re more bohemian, maybe a set of colorful and quirky ceramics from the Amalfi coast. For the island, a large bowl, functional or not. Or you could do a live or dried floral arrangement.” —Roric Tobin

“FRESH PRODUCE AND FLOWERS, BEAUTIFUL VESSELS, SMALL APPLIANCES, CUTTING BOARDS AND DECORATIVE STORAGE BOWLS.” —Damon Liss

“I love bowls for fruit, cookbooks and pitchers to help give a kitchen a collected, lived-in look.” —Tara Kantor

“Marble!” —Tara Kantor

“There is nothing more luxurious than bookmatched marble slabs in a bathroom.” —Roric Tobin

“Natural stone like marble, terrazzo, travertine.” —Damon Liss

OUTDOOR SHOWERS:

ARE THEY WORTH THE EXPENSE AND EFFORT?

“100% WORTH IT. AND THEY’RE NOT THAT EXPENSIVE OR IMPRACTICAL. WHETHER YOU’RE RINSING OFF AFTER THE BEACH OR INDULGING A BIT, YOU NEED TO HAVE AN OUTDOOR SHOWER. BUT DO NOT LET THEM BE A CLAUSTROPHOBIC AFTERTHOUGHT. MAKE SURE THEY ARE LARGE— ESPECIALLY IF YOU OR YOUR GUESTS HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN THAT NEED ASSISTANCE RINSING OFF. MAKE SURE THEY GET ENOUGH AIR CIRCULATION, AND LIGHT. THEY CAN MILDEW QUICKLY IF NOT AND THAT IS BEYOND GROSS.” —Roric Tobin

“It depends on the location. If you’re near the water, or somewhere taking a hike, going to the beach and coming back, rinsing off outside instead of walking in the house and tracking sand is very special.” —Scott Sanders

“No… people really don’t wind up using them unless they have a dog.”—Tara Kantor

WALLPAPER OR PAINT?

“If we can do wallpaper, I love wallpaper. It adds another level of detail and personality.” —Scott Sanders

“LIME

WASH PAINT IS ALWAYS MY FAVORITE!” —Tara

Kantor

“I love both options. There are so many fantastic wallpapers today, from gorgeous subtle textures, to bold patterns and murals. Removing wallcovering isn’t as difficult as people think, so it’s not a huge commitment. That being said, if you have a room that has a lot of architectural detailing, I would lean to paint. You don’t want to overexert the eye or cloud beautiful detailing.” —Roric Tobin

“Paint, unless it’s a powder, then wallpaper.” —Damon Liss

WHICH COLORS WORK BEST?

“Part of the bathroom should have white. It feels very clean and fresh. All blues look good; French blue and turquoise work very nicely with white.”

—Scott Sanders
“Neutrals, pale blues.”
—Damon Liss

“It depends on the client, the age of the client and the look of the house. Most people like their bathrooms light and bright, but I am seeing a trend toward more moody spaces that I really like.”

HOW CAN YOU MAKE A PRIMARY BATHROOM FEEL GRANDER?

“Here I am going to say something that may seem counterintuitive. Bigger is not always better. I walk into some primary baths today and there is just a ton of cavernous, unusable space. Instead, make sure there is a ton of natural light.”

—Roric Tobin

“FRAMELESS GLASS SHOWER ENCLOSURE, FLOATING VANITY, DECORATIVE LIGHTING.”

—Damon Liss

“Marble is the best way to make a primary bathroom look more hotellike.” —Tara Kantor

“A grand design I have loved forever and love for client to request are large, spa-like wet rooms with many shower heads and tub in one glass space. Ultra-luxurious.”

—Roric Tobin

“Certainly mirrors and glass. If it’s a bathroom that has a shower, just a single sheet of glass and no door can really open it up. Choosing a walk-in shower with no curb really helps, as your eye won’t stop at the curb. Pick shiny materials, shiny marble and porcelain with some sheen to reflect light.” —Scott Sanders

“ONE THING I STEER CLEAR OF ARE HALF-PANEL SHOWERS. IT’S VERY SLEEK AND CONTEMPORARY TO HAVE ALL ONE FLOOR AND JUST ONE PANEL OF GLASS AND THE REST OPEN. BUT IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO SHOWER THERE, YOU NEED SOME ENCLOSURE. I WANT TO BE IMMERSED IN WATER AND STEAM, NOT A DRAFT!”

—Roric Tobin

FAVORITE WAYS TO USE A MIRROR/ MIRRORS?

“I HATE MEDICINE CABINETS! SOMEONE NEEDS TO DESIGN SOME COOLER ONES. BUT IN THE ABSENCE OF THAT NICHE BEING FILLED, I PREFER A SIMPLE MINIMAL MEDICINE CABINET AND SAVE THE COOL MIRRORS FOR OTHER PLACES IN THE HOUSE.”

“Decorative vintage mirror, hung from the ceiling or in front of a window.” —Damon Liss

“I love a medicine cabinet that’s mirrored.”

—Scott Sanders

LEADING TRENDS?

“Continuing wood flooring, moody powder bath, natural materials.” —Damon Liss

“I HAVE A CLIENT WHO IS FOCUSED ON A SPECIFIC TYPE OF TUB, A THERAPEUTIC TUB THAT’S ALSO A STATEMENT TUB. YOU CAN’T RE-INVENT BATHROOMS, BUT YOU CAN TAKE WHAT’S THERE AND DO IT BETTER.” —Scott Sanders

BATHROOMS:

BRIGHT AND BOLD OR NEUTRAL?

“NEUTRAL.” —Tara Kantor

“Primary and guest baths should be neutral. Powder rooms, pool baths or bathrooms off of media rooms and libraries should absolutely be statement making.” —Roric Tobin

“If it’s a powder room, bright and bold. If it’s a bathroom they’re using that’s attached to the bedroom, keep it more neutral with a little pop of color since they’re using it every day. Neutral is calming.” —Scott Sanders

“Neutral!”

THE GREAT OUTDOORS THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Landscape architects and garden designers on the East End are turning away from perfectly manicured yards in favor of native grasses, shade gardens and fruits and vegetables that thrive in our climate. The result is lowmaintenance, good for the earth and of course, gorgeous.

Perfect Earth Project

“There are so many wonderful plants native to the East End, and they will all thrive here because they evolved here, if you pick the right plant for the right place—dry, wet, sun, shade, deer, and so on. Pick the ones that will thrive without extra irrigation, pruning, watering, fertilizing or spraying. And do try to be a bit more imaginative than just adding mophead hydrangeas and crepe myrtles. They offer no pleasant surprises for you and next to nothing for wildlife.”

—Edwina von Gal

“Native plants have become increasingly popular among clients seeking landscapes that are not only beautiful but also ecologically beneficial. Native plants are well-adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, requiring less water and maintenance compared to non-native species.”

“For trees, I love East red cedar, American holly and Sweet Bay magnolia. They all thrive on the East End. Native grasses like little bluestem and switchgrass thrive and don’t get eaten by deer. They can add so much interest to the landscape in the winter.” —Geoffrey Nimmer

“The East End has porous, free draining soils –for the most part, so plants and trees thrive. To name a few: Sea-beach sedge, beach plum and northern bayberry.”
—Janice Parker

104 THE HAMPTONS DESIGN GUIDE 2024

“AS A FLORAL DESIGNER FIRST AND A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT SECOND, I LEARNED EARLY ON THAT THERE ARE NO RULES ABOUT COLOR THAT CAN’T BE BROKEN. I BELIEVE, ‘GO BIG OR GO HOME,’ IS APPLICABLE TO THE USE OF COLOR IN THE GARDEN. BE BOLD! DEEPER YELLOWS AND PURPLE BLUES WILL ATTRACT POLLINATORS AND SATISFY YOUR EYE. THINK: JEWEL TONES (REDS, ORANGES), ACCENTED BY CHARTREUSE. GIVE YOUR GARDEN THE FREEDOM TO TELL A COLOR STORY!” —Janice Parker

HOW MUCH COLOR SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE GARDEN?

“I am a fan of keeping color simple in the garden, using white and blue, and focusing on structure and texture. But if you are going to add color, I say go big or stay home. Start with red knockout roses, and then add in orange, yellow and purple.” —Geoffrey Nimmer

HOW TO MAKE WAVES WITH WATER FEATURES

“Habitat is food, shelter, and water. And a natural landscape is maximized for habitat. When you add a simple bird bath or a small pond with planted edges, your water feature—and garden— comes alive.” —Edwina von Gal

“In my designs, water features or fountains are more like sculptures, used often to mitigate unwanted sound. We have so many beautiful natural water features here, so for that reason I haven’t created any natural ponds.”

—Geoffrey Nimmer

“I LIKE TO PLACE SCULPTURE IN A SIMPLE DESIGN LAYOUT THAT NEEDS A ‘WOW’ FACTOR… AND THIS IS POSSIBLE IN THE SMALLEST SPACE. ONE LARGE GESTURE THAT MAKES MAGIC, THEN A SIMPLE SOFT PLANTING TO SET THE BACKGROUND.”

—Janice Parker

WHICH VEGETABLE AND HERB PLANTS PERFORM BEST ON THE EAST END?

“Potatoes, of course, lettuce, tomatoes, corn, pumpkins and more. Herbs love free-draining soils, so they love the East End. Try basil, rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano and cilantro. Parsley will never let you down.” —Janice Parker

“This is a great place for farming; just about everything grows well here. But there is a reason why most people end up with baskets of tomatoes and zucchinis; they are so reliable.” —Edwina von Gal

“Rosemary, sage, parsley, thyme and mint are all extremely easy to grow here.” —Geoffrey Nimmer

BEST FRUITS TO GROW IN THE SUMMER?

“RASPBERRIES! THEY ARE SO EASY TO GROW AND SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANY YOU CAN BUY.”

—Edwina

“Berries! What could be better than blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and more?” —Janice Parker

“Raspberries, blackberries, persimmons. The fruit is delicious, and they are not prone to pests and fungus.”

SHADE GARDENS TOP TIPS:

“Pick the right plants, shade plants for moist or dry conditions. Shade plants don’t flower much in the summer, so go for a simple mix of textures. You can hardly go wrong with native ferns and heuchera (autumn bride).”

—Edwina von Gal

“CHOOSE JUST ABOUT ANY FERN: JAPANESE FOUNTAIN GRASS, DUKE GARDENS, LEATHERLEAF MAHONIA, MONKSHOOD OR BLACK COHOSH.”

—Geoffrey Nimmer

“Do not overwater! Use ground covers, not grass, and use bright colored foliage, if possible. Some favorites are: substance hosta, astilbes and hellebores. Annual favorites for colorful leaves in the shade include caladium, canna, coleus and begonia.”

—Janice Parker

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FIGHTING INSECTS AND PESTS?

“Don’t fight them! Get to know what it is you are thinking to kill: very often they aren’t actually pests, and most often, if you wait a bit, some natural predator (ladybug or bird) will come along and eat them. Never use insecticides, including the ones called organic. They kill the good with the bad and interrupt the pest/predator natural cycle. Tick spraying is the worst! It doesn’t reduce the incidence of Lyme Disease and it is wiping out all our beloved insects, including fireflies and butterflies. Spray yourself instead.”

—Edwina von Gal

“LEAVE THE INSECTS ALONE, WE SHOULDN’T BE SPRAYING AT ALL. IT CAN BE PART OF A LANDSCAPE DESIGN TO USE PLANT MATERIAL THAT IS NOT PRONE TO PESTS AND DISEASE.” —Geoffrey Nimmer

THE GREAT OUTDOORS 108 THE HAMPTONS DESIGN GUIDE 2024

WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR GARDEN INSPIRATION?

“All styles of landscape design throughout history resonate with me, as long as there is a strong respect for the land and respect for nature. Designing landscapes is nothing new. The Romans were outside soaking in their baths in the second century BC. In India and the Middle East, there have been garden structures found 10,000 years older than that. The notion that paradise could be created on earth took root early and is still with us.” —Janice Parker

“Touring public gardens, art galleries and museums, sometimes old movies, design books and my fellow landscape designers.” —Geoffrey Nimmer

“I look to nature. She knows what will do well and look wonderful. Why else do we travel to natural places for relaxation?”

HYDRANGEAS 101

“There are a couple of native ones like hydrangea arborescens and quercifolia that have flowers with real nectar. They are beautiful in a mixed planting. But really, can we move away from masses of mophead hydrangeas and into what is happening in gardens now?” —Edwina von Gal

“I know that blue mop head hydrangeas represent the quintessential Hamptons landscape. But I find them problematic, which I attribute to our climate crisis. All the hydrangea paniculata grandiflora, tardiva and limelight—are reliable, low-maintenance and long-blooming plants.”

“I love most hydrangeas, limelight in particular. But don’t overlook Hydrangea quercifolia (oak leaf hydrangea)—they have giant flowers in varied tones in the summer, orange foliage in the fall and a lovely peeling bark in the wintertime. You will always enjoy looking at this plant. You can always add in a vertical element like Astilbe for form and interest.” —Janice Parker

WHICH FLOWERS LOOK BEST IN ARRANGEMENTS?

“MY VERY FIRST MEMORY IS OF A PEONY, IT WAS AS BIG AS MY HEAD! I HAVE BEEN IN LOVE WITH PEONIES AND FLOWERS EVER SINCE. LOOK FOR SPRING FLOWERING BULBS (TULIPS, IRIS, DAFFODILS AND CAMASSIA ARE ALL DELICIOUS IN A VASE). TRY CUTTING BRANCHES OF TREES, AS WELL.” —Janice Parker

“The classics: Roses, peonies, dahlias, zinnias. Then amsonia, echinops and echinacea, that you could pick from your meadow.”

WHEN SHOULD YOU START PREPPING YOUR SUMMER GARDEN?

“Start planning your garden in winter so that you will be ready to purchase material as soon as it is available. Get it in the ground in the spring so that it can be established for full-on summer glory.” —Geoffrey Nimmer

“MANY DECIDUOUS TREES AND SHRUBS CAN BE PRUNED IN LATE WINTER—BUT CHOOSE A WARM DAY. SEVERE CUTTING AND SHAPING SHOULD BE DONE WHILE PLANTS ARE DORMANT SINCE SUMMER PRUNING TENDS TO INHIBIT GROWTH. IT IS EASIER TO SEE BRANCHING STRUCTURES AND MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT WHERE AND HOW TO SHAPE YOUR SHRUBS AND TREES WHEN THERE IS NO FOLIAGE. SUCKERING GROWTH IS MUCH EASIER TO SPOT AND CUT OUT NOW. BUT, WAIT TO PRUNE SPRING BLOOMERS LIKE MAGNOLIA, RHODODENDRON, FORSYTHIA, QUINCE, ANDROMEDA, AZALEA AND SPIREA, TO NAME A FEW. IF THEY ARE LEGGY AND WILD, THEY CAN BE PRUNED JUST AFTER THEY BLOOM.” —Janice Parker

THE GREAT OUTDOORS 112 THE HAMPTONS DESIGN GUIDE 2024

WHAT LANDSCAPE DESIGNS ARE TRENDING IN THE HAMPTONS?

“There seem to be two main design camps: the old-fashioned boring aesthetic with ultra-uptight plants that look like they’re ‘trapped in shapewear’ or the new relaxed look, bursting with life, that’s new and different almost every day. Guess which one is better for the environment and better for you?” —Edwina von Gal

“Many clients are looking to extend their living space into the outdoors. They want areas where they can relax, entertain guests and enjoy nature’s beauty.”
—Justin Quinn

“Low maintenance, sustainable, organic landscapes, with yearround interest.”

“People are aware now more than ever that their homes are also a sanctuary. There is a great desire and need for extended season outdoor living. Outdoor pavilions with heaters, plush furniture and fireplaces are in demand. Fire bowls are a beautiful all-in-one addition to the landscape that work perfectly in smaller settings.”

“It’s always a good idea to splurge on quality upholstered furniture. A well-loved sofa can last forever and can be reupholstered any number of times. Another great place is the key focal piece. Spend on a buffet, for example, or a stunning chest or table, and create the heirlooms of the future. —Katie Lyndon

“There is so much out there at every price point nowadays. It’s really amazing, and some of these retail outlets have come a long way. However, I do believe you should not sacrifice and not skimp out on a sofa. Your sofa is the star of your sitting room and you want it to be inviting, comfortable and long lasting. I also love to add some sort of vintage element to homes we design. They add interest and usually have great lines. This is another place to splurge!”

WHAT DO CLIENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GETTING PROJECTS FINISHED IN THE HAMPTONS?

“Everyone needs to keep this top of mind: summer houses are made in the winter. You need to get organized and make all decisions so contractors can execute. As you get closer to summer, everyone gets overwhelmed with pending deadlines and it’s harder to pull off. Take advantage of the offseason as much as possible!” —Alicia Murphy

“Time is of the essence! For a summer move-in, a houseful of furniture must be ordered no later than end of February to ensure a June delivery (sometimes January in custom cases). For our summer projects, we make weekly shopping appointments with our clients starting in September. We suggest shipping all merchandise to a receiving warehouse (who will catalog and inspect all pieces), and once the home is complete we will do one large move-in right before summer starts.” —Melanie Calder Russo

“BE REALISTIC ABOUT LEAD TIMES. PLAN FOR THE PROJECT WITH PLENTY OF TIME TO MAKE THE SPACE EVERYTHING YOU DREAM OF. IF YOU’VE GOT A QUICK TURNAROUND, STICK WITH A CONCEPT AND PURCHASE INSHOP ITEMS WHILE AVOIDING CUSTOM ORDERS, WHICH CAN EXTEND YOUR TIMELINE GREATLY.” —Michael Del Piero

“Like any project, it’s important to know that it’s a process. Anything with stunning results takes time, especially in a community like the Hamptons where there is so much building going on. Beautiful things just take time!” —Philip

GIEVES ANDERSON (NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023) 135 COTTAGESGARDENS.COM

HOW DO YOU PUT ‘SUMMER’ INTO A HAMPTONS HOME?

“Natural elements. Summer is about lightness and the outdoors, so bring those elements into your house through cerused woods and natural stones in the colors of the Hamptons: sand, bluestone, crisp whites. Just say no to overtly ‘beachy’ things—it seems so obvious.” —Alicia Murphy

“It’s important to make your home feel like it’s your own personal space. This can be done by adding objects, layers and furnishings, making it feel like an escape. Stay away from seaside references. You don’t have to use literal references to have it be a beach house, have fun instead and fill it with things you love.” —Philip Gorrivan

“A great way to add that summer feeling is with light and natural fibers like linen, cotton and sisal. They will always feel appropriate in a Hamptons home and will provide that relaxed and beachy feel. Color can be a great way, too, obviously blue but also happy prints and stripes.” —Katie Lydon

“So many are living in the Hamptons year-round. Putting summer into the home comes easily by switching out throws and pillows and rotating your art collections.”

—Michael Del Piero

“SUMMER DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN EVERYTHING HAS TO BE WHITE OR TAN. IT’S MORE ABOUT THE TEXTURE OF THE FABRICS (LINENS OVER CASHMERE, FOR EXAMPLE). DON’T BE AFRAID TO ADD BLACK INTO A LIGHTER SPACE. NOT ONLY DOES IT HELP GROUND THE ROOM, IT ALSO ADDS A SENSE OF REALISM. AND, BRING IN SOME NATURAL MATERIALS FOR A SUMMERY FEEL: RATTAN, FLUTED WOODS, ORGANIC TEXTURES.”

HOW TO DECK OUT YOUR

HOME BAR?

“I love a good-looking bar! Beautiful decanters, interesting drinking glasses, sleek barware, linen cocktail napkins and a fabulous tray are all wonderful additions. I love to see fantastic liquor bottles and sometimes those designs and labels add a lot of glamor. It is also a great idea to create a bar area, and you can do this with stylish wallpaper, sculptural sconces and built-ins with glass shelving and great lighting. All of these elements can really raise the bar, pun intended.”

—Katie Lydon

“First, don’t clutter your bar with too many bottles. If you display the star players on a beautiful tray and add in an interesting ice bucket, you have a home run. For a little something extra, get some large ice molds to make extra large square or round ice. They add a fun touch.”

—Melanie Calder Russo

“Every

house needs a bar. It represents happy and fun times! One of the things I enjoy doing to personalize the space is using monogrammed bar décor. It’s also nice to use vintage barware that references different periods.”

—Philip Gorrivan

“STYLING IS EVERYTHING! TOP-SHELF BOTTLES OF LIQUOR MIX WELL WITH SLEEK, MODERN BLOWN GLASS DECANTERS AND PATINATED BRASS VASES FOR SEASONAL FLOWERS, ANTIQUE CORKSCREWS AND STIRRERS.” —Michael Del Piero

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE WHITES AND NEUTRALS?

“BENJAMIN MOORE CHANTILLY LACE AND FOR WALLS, DUNN EDWARDS PRECIOUS PEARLS.”

—Alicia Murphy

“My favorite white paint colors are Farrow & Ball Wimborne White and Benjamin Moore Simply White. Both are very fresh whites with just a tinge of warmth and glow that look good just about anywhere.” —Katie Lydon

“Perennials is always our go-to outlet for great whites. And Kravet has expanded its outdoor white/neutral collection and has a ton of options.”

—Melanie Calder Russo

“My go-to’s are White Dove, Light Pewter and Sand Dollar from Benjamin Moore. It is important to remember that the light at the beach favors softer whites and paler grays.”

—Philip Gorrivan

“Farrow & Ball’s Shaded White is a soft and approachable white. It works especially well in classic spaces, while Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee lends itself to a modern style home. Favorite neutral shade of the moment: Sherwin Williams’ Anonymous, a dark, muted, complex color that can stand the test of time.” —Michael Del Piero

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BOLD PAINT COLOR?

“Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball”
—Alicia Murphy

“Farrow & Ball Hague Blue and Brinjal” —Katie Lydon

“I prefer deep saturated colors that are less bold and more moody, creating a sexy backdrop for furnishings and art. Benjamin Moore Narragansett Green is a go-to.”

—Michael Del Piero

“My favorite color is Wenge by Benjamin Moore. It’s reminiscent of the Coca-Cola brown Billy Baldwin used in his interiors.” —Philip Gorrivan

138 THE HAMPTONS DESIGN GUIDE 2024 READY, SET DECORATE!

“One of my favorite clients is not afraid to incorporate many bold fabric choices in close proximity to one another. Stripes, lush florals and pictorial scenes are all layered together in pillows, curtains and upholstery. Finding the balance can be tricky, but it’s very rich and warm when you get it right, and sometimes the rule is more is more. Two competing fabrics might look off by themselves, but pair them with three others and suddenly each fabric can shine in their own spotlight.”

—Katie Lydon

HOW TO HAVE FUN WITH FABRICS!

“Texture, texture, texture! Layered textures can be so much more interesting than pattern.”
—Michael Del Piero

“Choosing a bold fabric color or print can be scary for a client to commit to. But adding a pop of a pattern or bright color in a throw pillow, ottoman or even a chair will add so much interest to a room. A lot of clients fear they will get sick of a pattern or color in time…I say, that’s when we recover! Nothing has to be forever. And most clients are very happy with the end result.” —Melanie Calder Russo

“FOR ME EVERY PROJECT STARTS WITH TEXTILES. THIS IS WHERE I GET MY INSPIRATION FOR THE COLOR AND DESIGN DIRECTION FOR A SPACE. THE MORE FABRIC IN A SPACE THE BETTER—ONE MY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO WITH FABRIC IS A TENTED ROOM; IT IS LUXURIOUS AND TRANSFORMATIVE.” —Philip Gorrivan

“I love to use sheers from Larsen Fabrics, furniture pieces from Bonacina and rattan pieces from Serena and Lily. Natural wall coverings are also especially useful in creating a light and airy space.”

—Philip Gorrivan

“Less is more. Using shades of white is a no-brainer for creating airy spaces. Lightweight fabrics and layers of glass objects in the space lend an airy vibe.” —Michael Del Piero

“Declutter your surfaces. Having a lot of objects and tchotchkes around will make a room feel weighed down. Less is more. Lightweight window treatments, simply sheers, are always a way to give your home an easy, breezy feel. I love an arrangement of fresh flowers on the table.”

—Melanie Calder Russo

WHAT SIMPLE DECORATING TRICKS MAKE A SPACE FEEL LIGHT AND AIRY?

“LAYERING LIGHT TO MEDIUM COLORS THROUGHOUT THE ROOM, WHILE RELYING MORE ON TEXTURE THAN ON DEPTH OF COLOR FOR INTEREST, CAN HELP A ROOM TO FEEL LIGHT AND AIRY. MAXIMIZE THE LIGHT COMING THROUGH THE WINDOWS, AND UTILIZE MIRRORS TO CREATE A SENSE OF MORE SPACE AND LIGHT.”

BESIDES A STACK OF OVERSIZE BOOKS, WHAT LOOKS NICE ON A COFFEE TABLE?

“I love this question because you can really go to town here. I recommend thinking about ways to reflect who you are and what travels you have been on. I recently bought a brass American football object for a football fan; it looks great on top of a few books. A tray and/or decorative box to corral remote controls is always nice. A candle with a beautiful scent, which you can light anytime. An arrangement of fresh flowers or branches. A unique sculptural object.” —Katie Lydon

“Depending on the size of the table, a pair of sculptural vases or an interesting artsy object. You also can’t go wrong with a simple box paired with cool bowl. I would say not to use more than two or three items. Again, less is more.” —Melanie Calder Russo

WHAT’S AN IDEAL ACCENT CHAIR FOR A HAMPTONS LIVING ROOM?

“I think a strong sculptural chair is really nice, because often in the Hamptons we want very casual sofas, so that can be a good way to add some wood or character to the room.” —Katie Lydon

“THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF AN ACCENT CHAIR IS THE CONTINUUM CHAIR DESIGNED BY GIO PONTI AND FOUND ON BONACINA.”—Philip Gorrivan

“A STACK OF BOOKS WORKS WELL AS A PLATFORM FOR A SMALL SCULPTURE. ANTIQUE POTTERY AND A GLASS VASE FOR FLOWERS ARE PLENTY TO CREATE AN INTERESTING MOMENT.”

—Michael Del Piero

“Unique additions to any coffee table can be found in ceramic bowls and unique pottery. I love midcentury pottery and have an obsession with groupings of malachite as well (found on Wunderkammer). Malachite is the perfect pop of green in any space.” —Philip Gorrivan

“Paired with comfortable upholstered chairs, a weathered antique wooden chair is the right accent chair for the space. This reads as casual (beach, not fussy) and plays well with others.”

—Michael Del Piero

“Something comfortable, cozy and on a swivel. It’s always nice to be able to swivel to look out a door or window to appreciate the view, weather it be a bay or ocean view or lush greenery.” —Melanie Calder Russo

HOW CAN YOU ADD GRANDEUR TO A FOYER:

“THERE’S A REASON YOU SEE MIRRORS IN FOYERS. THEY ADD GRANDEUR. ESPECIALLY IF OVER-SCALED AND DRAMATIC. A FIXTURE WITH SOME OOMPH CAN ADD TO THE DRAMA OF THE SPACE.” —Michael Del Piero

“While I am a die-hard fan of beautiful neutrals, a bold paint color in an entrance foyer can be so striking and set the tone for the rest of the home. You can get away with saturated color, as it’s a small space and a transitional space. Other essentials include a beautiful mirror, a resting spot for keys and maybe a dramatic console if you have the space.” —Alicia Murphy

“Foyers are my favorite. It’s the first and last impression within a house. Since the foyer is a passthrough space, it’s the one opportunity to do something bold. Whether it is cream-colored leather panels or rich peacock lacquer. You should always change the flooring in the entryway, whether it’s a stone flooring or wood paneling.” —Philip Gorrivan

“A stunning floor is a great start. A fabulous polished mosaic tile floor gives a wow-factor to an entryway and adds a lot of sophistication as well as durability for such a high-traffic area of the home.” —Katie Lydon

“A LARGE MIRROR OVER A CONSOLE TABLE WITH A GORGEOUS LAMP IS ONE WAY TO GO. IF THE FOYER IS LARGE ENOUGH, A ROUND TABLE WITH A LARGE VASE FILLED WITH FLOWERS IS ALWAYS STUNNING.”—Melanie Calder Russo

AND DON’TS

“DO CHECK IF THE WALLPAPER WILL SHOW SEAMS. A LOT OF CLIENTS HAVE AN AVERSION TO SEAMS (AS DO I ON CERTAIN PATTERNS), SO IT’S BETTER NOT TO BE DISAPPOINTED AFTER IT’S INSTALLED.” —Melanie Calder Russo

“Texture over pattern.” —Michael Del Piero

“MAKE YOUR WALLPAPER SELECTION PERSONAL. SHOWCASE COLORS, PATTERNS, TEXTURES OR IMAGES THAT ARE UNIQUE TO YOU AND YOUR SPACE.” —Katie Lydon

“Dos: Wallpaper an entire space including the ceiling. Don’ts: A feature wall.” —Philip Gorrivan

TIPS FOR A CLASSIC HAMPTONS LOOK/STYLE

“Black is not the devil. Don’t be afraid of color/pattern. Add a touch of vintage. Bring the outside in. There are no rules.”

—Melanie Calder Russo

“The Hamptons should feel like a luxurious escape in the finest hotel, with every room exuding casual comfort. Your hospitality will really sing in the details. Invest in ultra-soft towels, crisp white bed linens, and always make space for fresh botanicals. Choose a light and floral home fragrance from Diptyque to greet your guests the moment they walk in the door.” —Katie Lydon

“The beauty of the Hamptons is that there’s not just one look. Each home is very personal, for me, I like to incorporate natural textured Somerselle wallpaper. For the outdoors, one can never have enough hydrangeas!” —Philip Gorrivan
