Recreational Cottage Ownership with Great Blue Resorts

Many people dream about owning a family cottage, yet these days this unfortunately has to remain just a dream for some. Rising prices mean it's just not an affordable reality. Thankfully there is a much less costly alternative cottage resort living. by Tracey Allison

So what exactly is a recreational cottage? It is maintenance-free cottage ownership that includes all of the amenities of being at a resort. You’ll still have your own private little cottage where you can

enjoy all of the traditional cottage things to do but you’ll also enjoy the all-inclusive extras like full family entertainment, a heated salt water pool, multi-sports court, playground, recreational pavilion, daily kids club activities, special event nights, splash pads, paddle boards, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, boating, swimming and more. Outright recreational cottage ownership is a much more desirable option for many compared to having timeshare or fractional ownership. This way you don’t have to share your cottage and can still manage affordable monthly payments. Another bonus, you’ll be free from the never-ending list of outdoor chores you get with traditional cottages. You have a maintenance crew, included in your resort management fee, that will cut your grass and maintain the rest of the grounds while you’re off doing the things you love most and spending quality time with your family. All your running costs - water, hydro, grounds-keeping, security, an on-site management team and unlimited guest passes are included in the annual fee. Start your family traditions and choose a resort in cottage country

from eight Southern Ontario locations, managed by Great Blue Resorts. These quality built recreational cottages start as low as $59,900 for pre-owned or from $81,900 for brand new, plus HST and resort management fees. Financing is available OAC with affordable low monthly payments. These beautiful and spacious recreational cottages have several open concept floor plans and decor packages to choose from so you can customize your space. All models come with shingled roof tops, airconditioning, low-maintenance vinyl siding and windows and all furniture, appliances, lighting and window treatments are included in the floor plan price. One of Great Blue Resorts’ awesome locations is Cherry Beach Resort in Prince Edward County. Just steps away from Sandbanks Provincial Park, it sits on over 45 acres of beautiful waterfront, including a 1200 foot long sandy beach on East Lake. Buyers can usually be in their Cherry Beach Resort cottage as soon as three or four weeks, so you’ll be ready to enjoy resort living in no time.

Since 1994

Another great resort in cottage country is Great Blue Resorts’ Bellmere Winds Resort. There you will enjoy recreational cottage ownership only 20 minutes south east of Peterborough in the village of Keene. This resort features an 18 hole golf course with beautiful views of Rice Lake. So when you see all that’s included, you can ask yourself, where can you spend

less money while having the time of your life creating family memories that will last forever? Recreational cottage ownership is an option that can make your dreams come true. To learn more go to: www.greatblueresorts.com or call 1-866-680-7730 Advertisement

Award Winning

By Jonathan Hiltz

Modular Homes

Are All the Rage It doesn't take a financial guru to see that housing prices in Ontario have sharply increased over the last five years. This isn’t just primary residences either. Cottages and investment properties in many areas have also seen a dramatic rise. By Jonathan Hiltz

Enter the idea of modular or manufactured homes. These are dwellings that were built indoors, in a factory setting, and then transported to the new location where builders assemble the property. This idea is not new but it is certainly gaining momentum. Ritchie James is one of the owners of Total Manufactured Homes out of Bowmanville, Ontario. They are a distributor of modular homes and have been getting quite busy. In an interview with Cottage Country Connection, James explained who buys their product and its increase in popularity. “[The main] people buying are from the city. They’re buying as a secondary home, retirement home or cottage”, James said.

“The benefit to a manufactured home is that it’s manufactured indoors. It doesn’t see any weather and the house comes 95 percent finished”. Another great benefit to a manufactured home is, of course, the price. “At the end of the day, a custom home can vary from $250$500+ per square foot. You can get into a 1400 square foot manufactured home for under $200,000”. James added that customers are taking advantage of modular homes for both cottages and their main dwellings as well. “They are doing it for both. I’ve had my website going now for nine weeks and I’ve had close to 42,000 hits on the site”. James attributes the popularity of his homes to the increasing sales price of traditional housing in the GTA, and other busy pockets of Ontario. So if the spike in housing prices has given you heart palpitations like the rest of us, fear not. An alternative exists in modular homes if you can keep an open mind. They certainly aren’t the norm, but they are a great way to have the property you want, without paying your life savings to have it.

Taking Your Roof to the Next Level Lifestyle Metal Roofing

What if you could replace your existing asphalt roof shingles with beautiful, premium, shingles without removing the old shingles that are there now? And, what if, by doing so, you could add to the value of your home or cottage with a roof that lasts a lifetime? Brothers Bill and Keith Carroll, owners of Lifestyle Home Products, are taking quality metal roofing to the next level. Before Lifestyle Home Products began installing steel roofing shingles, the company installed conventional asphalt shingles. Keith found that manufacturers would find reasons not to back their warranties. In 2013, Lifestyle Home Products started installing Wakefield Bridge steel shingles and Junior Heritage metal roofing. The Wakefield Bridge metal shingles have a solid, 50-year warranty. They match the look of a traditional shingled roof, but are made of durable steel to withstand the elements of a Canadian climate. The Wakefield Bridge shingles cost about twice as much as regular shingles, but last much longer than the 12 to 14 year lifespan of many conventional shingles. Over the lifetime of a metal roof, the waste reduction is significant. Also, you don't need to pay to dispose of your old asphalt shingles, the new steel shingles are installed over top. This environmentally-friendly construction method can add up to a third layer to an existing roof system. The steel roofing shingles installed by Lifestyle Home Products are available in a wide variety of colours to complement any style of home or cottage. In addition, a Lifestyle metal roof will deter squirrels and other small animals from getting inside your house structure. There's an interlocking strip installed around the entire perimeter of a Lifestyle roof. All Lifestyle metal roofs come with a 50-year transferable lifetime warranty so your roof is covered, even if you sell your home. “Once you discover a Lifestyle metal roof, you’ll never look back,” says Keith. “You’ll also discover real peace of mind."

Docking Systems Summertime is here and for a lot of people this means putting in their docks and preparing their boats for the season. Because of busy schedules and trying to get the most out of summer the typical docking system has changed dramatically. What started out with all-wood floating and pipe docks have evolved into lighter aluminum framed docks with removable decking panels. With the panels removed you only have to lift out the much lighter framework. Aluminum framed lift docks that can be easily raised and lowered every spring and fall have become a popular option. These docks can be made in various configurations and in lengths up to 48’. When the cold weather arrives simply remove the decking

22

panels in small sections exposing your gantry and cabling, connect the cable to your winch and crank it up. Whether you are looking for a simple walkway out to your boat, a system to accommodate a couple of boats, or a place to entertain family and friends, a system can be designed for you. Your docking system shouldn’t require a lot of maintenance. In the spring, if your decking is cedar, simply restore the decking colour with a cedar cleaner and either apply a fresh coat of water based stain or leave the wood to age naturally. Also, put a little dab of grease on your connection pins and leg bolts if it is a standard pipe dock. If you have had enough of staining your dock,

June 2017 ~ Cottage Country Connection

you could replace your decking panels with a PVC decking material. PVC decking panels offer a rot resistant option that will protect your feet from slivers, and do not require staining. Pick a PVC material that does not contain fibres that will absorb moisture causing your decking panels to warp. Ask your dock supplier or local building supplier if the decking can be used in the water. As with anything you buy sometimes the item with the best price is not always the best choice. If you follow the above guidelines when choosing your dock you should have many years of enjoyment from your docking system. By Katie Peet R&J Machine, www.rjmachine.ca

Tips on Hiking in Cottage Country

By Michelle McGuire

One of the best ways to get out to see our beautiful cottage country is to go for a hike on any of the numerous hiking and walking trails in the area. In addition to being a great physical work out, hiking can be a perfect stress reliever, and can recharge the spirit as well. See the new growth in the spring, appreciate the trilliums that grow by the hundreds in May, or gaze at the leaves as they change their colours in the fall. Here in the Kawarthas, you can find easier, more groomed trails to more rugged, backcountry hiking and everything in between. To find the perfect trail for you, http://www.ontariotrails.on.ca is an excellent resource. You can search the area and type of activity you would like to do, including hiking and walking. When you select a trail from the map, you will see an overview of the trail, as well as detailed information on the length and difficulty of the trail. As with most activities, there are a few safety considerations that will improve your hiking experience! Wearing good footwear that suits the terrain is a must! Consider having a small backpack packed with some of the following items: ✓ Water and a few protein bars to refuel ✓ Bug spray ✓ A small first aid kit in case of emergency ✓ A cell phone with GPS ✓ A trail map or map of the area, in case the cell service is less than reliable ✓ A whistle and a can of bear spray, especially in the spring time If you are bringing any furry friends, be sure to have enough water for them as well. It never hurts to let someone know where you are headed and when you expect to be back, especially if you are planning some backcountry hiking. With the nicer weather upon us, consider grabbing a friend or partner, and explore some of the many outstanding hiking trails that cottage country has to offer!

Centuries of Character at Burleigh Falls

Nature can create marvels that introduce a dreamy feeling of wonder for some and leave others in complete awe. There is a magnificent and powerful geological feature in cottage country: Burleigh Falls. Known for its picturesque views Burleigh Falls is visited by thousands of motorists every year to admire the impressive scene and take photos. Formerly known as ‘The Chute’ the waters narrow as they descend from Lovesick Lake to Stoney Lake, creating a cascade which was used as a log chute in the 1800s. Many experienced kayakers still use the falls as training area for white water; though extra caution should be used as the Log Irons are still embedded along the water course. There is another amazing site to see at Burleigh Falls, the beautiful Burleigh Falls Inn. The Inn was built in 1857 by Mr. Holmes and served to welcome tired lumber men who would have been driving logs through the local lakes and rivers southward, on their way to lumber mills in Lakefield and Peterborough. In 1899 The Inn succumbed to a debilitating fire. A Mr. Darcy rebuilt the Inn with the vision of it becoming a summer destination, a fisherman’s paradise. Previous owners also included the Fyfes and Wilsons who played an integral role in creating the presentday destination. In the late 50s the Inn expanded to create additional motel rooms, cottages and swimming pool. Evolving through the years the Inn was an integral part of the area, not only for visitors seeking lodging, but for the local population offering employment opportunities, information about the surrounding area, and the trading post (now the Market) for essential supplies. It is said that The Burleigh Falls in is haunted by spirits of the past; souls who fell in love with the area and couldn’t leave. Currently the Burleigh Falls Inn & Suites offers accommodations on scenic Stoney Lake. With convenient amenities, and packages to suit every personality, it truly is a must-visit destination. With 160 years of history the Inn is full of character; if the walls of Burleigh Falls Inn could talk, oh the stories they could tell. Safe on the Water

with Jay Poole

It's the beginning of the water sports season and you want to start on the right foot. Have the most fun and have a season filled with laughs and learning. Here are a few tips to make sure that you maximize your time on the water. Equipment Check.

At the beginning of the year your equipment has undoubtably spent its entire winter in gear purgatory, sitting waiting for you to get it out put it on and shred the lake. Before you start your season its important to give all of your gear a thorough examination. With wakeboards and skis it is important to check for chips or gouges and fill them with a watertight epoxy to keep the water from absorbing to the core and extending the life of your equipment. Give an especially focused inspection to ensure that the bindings are tightly fastened to the board or skis, and that the material, straps or laces are all in good condition and working properly. Because the bindings are where you meet the board or ski they are a crucial component to keeping you from injuring yourself and performing to your best potential. Similar to bindings make sure that on all your boards and skis including wake surfers that your fins are tight and in the proper position. Once you have ensured that your boards and skis are in tip top condition its time to move on to your ropes. The rope is literally your lifeline to the boat. It is crucial that you inspect your rope and handle for weak spots, knots and that the handle is in good order. Knots create weaknesses in the rope

Since 1994

and if they go unnoticed with the extra force you put on them they can suddenly release which could result in injury. If there are knots in your rope that can’t be worked out it might be time to invest in a new rope. Perhaps your most important piece of equipment is your PFD if your life vest has any rips or tears it is no longer a legal life saving device and you have to replace it. Unfortunately repairs or alterations are not allowed by law and so if your vest is in disrepair its time to look for a new one. Fortunately every year Canadian Lifeguard approved vests get lighter, more flexible and there is no time like the present for a awesome new vest. Lifejackets only work if you wear them so make sure you invest in something that fits well in and out of the water to test how it will fit in the water have a friend pull up on the shoulder straps and make sure that the vest stays with you and doesn’t go over your head.

Stretch it out.

Before you hit the water be sure to get limber. Its been a long winter and you are going to be reworking old muscles so it is important that before you go out on the water you focus on getting warmed up and stretched out. The best type of stretching

you can do before getting in the water is kinaesthetic stretches or muscle movement that promotes stretching. In the case of water sports shoulder circles, squats, lunges, jumping jacks, torso twists and hip rotations are great ways to limber up and get the blood pumping so that when you do inevitably fall you are substantially less prone to injury.

Take it Easy.

Everyone who gets back on the water wants to start off exactly where they left off last season and most injuries are caused by going too hard too soon. Use the early part of the season to build up the intensity slowly. Go out have fun cross the wakes ride behind the boat enjoy being back on the water. Then slowly start to work towards where you left off last season one ride at a time until you are back into full swing. If you focus on these simple tricks you will recover faster, have a more enjoyable time on the water and have your most successful season yet! The Grand Finale to a Perfect Summer Day At the end of the day, when the canoes have been pulled up onto shore, the wet towels have been hung on the makeshift clothes line, the water toys have been carried up from the dock and the supper dishes are almost cleared… we commence the art of building the campfire. We make teepees out of kindling, and bunch balls of newspaper to create that small flame that will start the blaze that provides warmth to our cold bare feet, toasts fluffy marshmallows and fills the night air with the charred smell of roasted hot dogs. The campfire is where we gather. A place that provides fellowship. It’s where we share our adventures from the day. Where legends are created and remembered, in stories of trails that have been conquered and fish that have been wrangled. It’s the place where laughter is plentiful, where snuggles are sacred, where bedtime stories are told and shooting stars are wished upon. It’s the place where the mysteries of summer unravel as we watch the sparks that dance from the fire float upwards in the twilight. When we gather around the glow of the campfire, we become part of something bigger. We become part of a tradition. We pass down stories about our families. We sing songs our grandparents once did and share secrets about where the best fish are hiding or where the best portage can be found. Like generations before us, the campfire is community. It’s where we eat, where we rest, it’s where we connect with each other. It’s the grand finale to a perfect summer day. Landscapes & Waterways “Hey, you’re that canoeing guy, with the sign over on Highway 36” the man says as he recognizes me from my billboard north of Buckhorn. “What’s that all about?” Canoeing has been a passion of mine since I first dipped a paddle in the water as a child and I have been canoeing the waters north of Peterborough for over 25 years. I came up with the concept as a way to connect to the thousands of local residents who share my passion for being on the water. Being a paddler is not what sets me apart from the other realtors in the area who specialize in waterfront and rural property, but it is a great way to start a conversation. So if it’s not the paddling, then what is it that sets me apart? I spent nearly 15 years in waterfront development and have been involved in hundreds, if not thousands of projects throughout the cottage country north of Kingston, the Thousand Islands, and of course the Kawartha Lakes. When it comes to waterfront development and rural property, there aren’t many scenarios I haven’t seen or managed. Two things have been consistent throughout my career, both before real estate and today, they are integrity and commitment.

Since 1994

When working with buyers and sellers integrity is the one thing that guides everything I do. From the listing of your property right through the negotiations, into the settlement and beyond, I will provide you with guidance, peace of mind, and creative marketing strategies. But my commitment extends beyond my business into the community. I am involved in several initiatives in Peterborough, including working on the Executive of the largest minor hockey tournament in town, and I also donate 1% of my personal gross revenues to Camp Kawartha each year to help that award winning facility provide hundreds of children with confidence building outdoor education opportunities. But back to the paddling, I love this part of Ontario, I have lived all over the province and in Australia, but have never felt as strong a connection to a landscape, the waterways, pine trees, and rock outcrops as I do to this area. And being in a canoe is the best way to experience it. If you’re looking for a realtor who not only understands the land, but feels connected to the landscape as well, give me a call, I’d be happy to help you. Got Pests? Ants, bats, and rodents oh my! There are so many common pests in Ontario and no one likes a pesky critter ruining their cottage or home. When these creatures invade your space and cause damage to your property, it is time to call in an expert to take care of your problem and get your space back. In Ontario, common pests include raccoons, skunks, bats, squirrels, mice, rats, and insects- including ants, spiders, bed bugs and wasps, just to name a few.

Some people may think critters are just harmless, but for example with rodents like mice and squirrels, they can cause fire hazards by chewing into electrical wires and water damage by chewing into pipes. Hiring a professional for the job is important. Take wood boring ants for instance, leaving them to bore into a wood structure can cause considerable damage and be very costly to the home or cottage owner. Getting help from a professional is the right choice as many control techniques require specialized equipment, insecticides and skill with the application of the pesticide. You’ll want to identify your pest and then get the best prevention and pest control extermination that you can. Locally owned and operated, Miller Pest Control, are just who you need for the job. With over 30 years’ experience, this professional pest control service can help in many areas, including pest control, extermination, bed bug removal, cottage guard, repair and

Since 1994

proofing, as well as noxious weed control including poison ivy. They service the Kawarthas, Peterborough, Haliburton, and Bancroft areas and are fully licensed with the Ministry of the Environment. Working with Miller Pest Control is easy, as they listen to their customer’s worries and perform a thorough on-site inspection to give a clear breakdown of the type of pest infestation occurring. They have seven licensed and trained technicians, with two Ecologists on staff, that clearly outline and communicate the appropriate steps that need to be taken in order to get rid of the unwanted pests before applying treatments. They service commercial, agricultural, industrial and residential properties. As Miller Pest Control says, it’s your home, not theirs. Get rid of your pest problem. History & Adventure on Pigeon Lake

Pigeon Lake is on the Trent Severn Waterway, right in the heart of Cottage Country, within the City of Kawartha Lakes and just west of the County of Peterborough. A large lake, covering 13,200 acres, Pigeon Lake is known for excellent bass, walleye and muskellunge fishing. Pigeon Lake is quite shallow with an average depth of 3 meters with its deepest point reaching 15 meters. Pigeon is a popular lake with a number of cottages and permanent residences, together with many resorts. Egan Marine uses Pigeon Lake as its base for the rental of houseboats, which provide exciting vacations on the Trent Severn Waterway. Before World War I large estate cottages were built in an area now knows as Trent Lakes on Pigeon Lake. These include “Missisquoi on Sandy Point, built in 1913 by businessman and politician Sir Edward Kemp. For modern-day cottagers the lake offers access to many day-trip destinations, excellent fishing and play. If an estate property is not in your budget there are many less costly alternatives for a place to call home on Pigeon Lake. Emily Provincial Park is also located on Pigeon Lake. The park has great facilities and over 150 campsites that make it an ideal

place for families who wish to vacation on the lake. The park offers natural heritage programs, two sandy beaches and easy access to beautiful Pigeon Lake. Fed by the Pigeon River located near Omemee, Pigeon Lake is long and narrow extending north from Omemee to Bobcaygeon where you will find Lock 32 on the Trent Severn Waterway. At Bobcaygeon, Pigeon Lake meets Sturgeon Lake to the west at the northern top of the chain of large lakes. These access points make it a great lake to spend the entire day exploring. In the 1800s lumber was King in the Kawarthas with large lumber mills built in the 1820s and 1830s. In 1832 Thomas Need built the biggest lumber mill at Bobcaygeon on the Sturgeon Pigeon narrows. The mill proved to be very busy due to its strategic location. It continued to operate until the early 1900s long after other mills in the Kawartha Lakes had closed. Need turned the mill over to Mossom Boyd to manage it in the 1840s as he continued on to other businesses. These men played a key role in development of the area including steps towards building the famous Trent Severn Waterway.

When folks visit us at Griffin’s Greenhouses, the talk is often of weather. The conversation turns, usually, to the Summer of 2016 and its crazy hot temperatures and lack of rain. Almost everyone wishes vehemently that the weather we experienced last year not happen again this year. Although, in that conversation, at least one proud plant moment emerges. Phones with saved photographs are whipped out and pictures of an amazing deck box or hanging basket are shared. We often hear, “Last year my flowers were amazing, despite the weather...” How could this be? It was an unprecedented summer of temperatures above 40-degree humidity for weeks on end and a record-setting seventy-eight days without significant rainfall. We were trying to grow Ontario plants in Floridian weather; there is a reason you don’t see begonias and geraniums growing in Florida in the summer – they just can’t do it. So, how did we do it? How did our patio planters thrive while we

Since 1994

were all puddles of perspiration sequestered in our air conditioned homes? It is our conclusion that the lack of rain forced us to WATER each and every day, without fail, and that was the key! So, with no rain last summer, we had to water our plants daily, sometimes even twice daily. It didn’t rain, so we couldn’t use that as the excuse to not do it. And see what thorough, daily watering can do? Many lessons can be learned from 2016: watering daily is needed, plant choices can make or break a planter (the sun was harsh, did you have the right plant in the right place?) and tropical plants, such as hibiscus (pictured), mandevillia, diplodenia, and succulents thrive in the heat. Talk to a professional at a good Garden Centre to learn more. And cheers to a more temperate, but sunshine-filled, Summer of 2017! Well Drilling & More with G. Hart & Sons One of the first things my husband and I got done before building our home was get a well witched. It was a fun afternoon, watching that stick point to where our well would be, was kind of spooky and cool all at once. I certainly could not make the stick work, but my mother-in-law could. It is certainly a science and good news well witching is just one of the many services G. Hart & Sons offer. George Hart started the business back in 1936 and G. Understanding Current

Real Estate Trends Should I sell? Where do I go if I do sell? Will my children ever be able to buy a home? Where is all the money coming from for all these “over list” multiple offers? Has the market gone nuts? These are just some of the questions I’m hearing every day.

The reasons for this real estate boom? The Toronto fever has migrated to the Kawarthas. The increase in foreign investment in Toronto has escalated the market price of homes and real estate in general. Canada is one of the least expensive countries in the world to buy property. The European and Asian investors are flocking to Canada to take advantage of prices in a politically stable country. As prices rise, Torontonians, especially baby boomers, are selling their properties and moving east and north. Accustomed to higher prices, they are bidding their way into Kawartha properties. Purchasing at substantially less than what they have just sold, they bank a tidy sum for their early retirement. It’s great news for Kawartha sellers but not for buyers. My best advice is to relax. The market changes weekly. Now that we are in the spring market and the hysteria has generated an increase in supply, we will return to a more balanced market. Normal offering process will return shortly. Do I sell now? You should sell based on “your” life situation. What do you want to do? Where do you want to go? Does a change make financial sense? Answering these questions make your decision much easier. As a realtor, at times I chuckle at the statement about my children’s opportunity to ever purchase a home. Forty years ago my Dad told me when I built my first home, you will never pay for it and if the economy goes bad you may lose it. I am certainly glad I didn’t need his advice. Since then the price of property has quadrupled and more. Many more people are self employed and earnings have increased. The world continues to change and people change with it. The real estate market is no exception and continues to be the greatest investment opportunity of our time. Relax and enjoy the opportunities. Candians have been canoeing and portaging for thousands of years. Canada’s native citizens used birch bark canoes to traverse this land’s lakes and rivers, and the first European explorers did the same. In this, Canada’s 150th year as a country, what would be more fitting than taking out a canoe and doing a little paddling and portaging with family and friends? Canoe construction has come a long way from birch bark or dugout canoes. These days, fiberglass or better still, Kevlar canoes are light as well as strong and durable. If you are considering doing a long portage route, Kevlar may be the way to go. A sixteen-and-a-half foot canoe can weigh as little as about fifty pounds. Though expensive to buy new, used canoes are quite reasonable on resale sites such as Kijiji. A good quality canoe can last a lifetime, so it can be a great investment! If purchasing a canoe is not up your alley, renting can be a convenient alternative.

grab your paddles and hit the lakes! There are so many great lakes in cottage country it will be hard to choose one! Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park is a hidden gem that stretches between Bobcaygeon and Buckhorn and north toward Bancroft. The park has numerous routes to paddle and portage to your heart’s content. If you are feeling adventurous, you can do a little white water canoeing down the Mississauga River in the spring. Trail maps can be purchased from the park office or online. For more details, visit www.ontarioparks.com/park/kawarthahighlands. A note to other boaters on the lake: when you see a canoe sharing the lake with you, PLEASE slow down before you pass and speed up when you are well past. This will prevent your wake from violently rocking and perhaps even swamping or tipping the canoe. Thank you for this courtesy! Now perhaps you feel inspired to take up a paddle, enjoy the sun, the wind at your back, and the haunting call of the loon!

Be sure to have life jackets on, and a boating safety kit on board,

I know, I know, we are hearing it all over cottage country “it’s a seller’s market”, but let’s not forget about common sense. Bidding wars have become the norm in recent months and if you are ready to stretch your budget, then at least go in with a safety net and be a wise buyer. The last thing that you want to do is go in at your max offer just to get the house, only to find out that it needs another 50K to fix it. A lot of agents are suggesting putting in an offer without any conditions. Quite frankly this is really risky and kind of crazy to consider doing. Getting a proper home inspection is critical. Without it you are making a major financial decision blindfolded. What if your “new to you home” has knob and tube wiring or lead pipes, not to mention asbestos or mould issues? You may not get house insurance, then what?

Home inspections are also the norm and if the seller wont let you get one, they might be hiding something and in fact, they might be doing you a favour by not accepting your offer. Most people simply don’t know enough to make that kind of in depth analysis of a home. Reputable, experienced and licensed home inspectors do. They can’t always catch everything, but what they do see will help you in your negotiations. Anyone with a checklist and a flashlight can “call themselves an inspector”, do your due diligence and make sure they are. Find an inspector that has been around a while and hopefully carries insurance, but whatever you do - find one. Don’t play Russian roulette with your largest investment! I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind. John G. Diefenbaker Under this flag may our youth find new inspiration for loyalty to Canada; for a patriotism based not on any mean or narrow nationalism, but on the deep and equal pride that all Canadians will feel for every part of this good land. Lester Pearson The Past is to be respected and acknowledged, but not to be worshiped. It is our future in which we will find our greatness. Pierre Elliott Trudeau Leave the beaten track behind occasionally and dive into the woods. Every time you do you will be certain to find something you have never seen before. Alexander Graham Bell We are here to add what we can to life, not to get what we can from life. William Osler

My name is Joe, and I Am Canadian Hey, I’m uh… not a lumberjack or a fur trader. I don’t live in an igloo, or eat blubber, or own a dog sled. And, I don’t know Jimmy, Sally or Suzie from Canada, although I’m sure they’re really really nice. I have a Prime Minister, not a President. I speak English and French, not American. And I pronounce it ‘about,’ not ‘a-boot.’ I can proudly sew my country’s flag on my backpack. I believe in peace keeping, not policing. Diversity not assimilation. And, the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal! A toque is a hat! - A chesterfield is a couch! And IT IS pronounced Zed, not Z. Zed! Happy 150 Birthday Canada! th

By Murray H. Miskin

Happy Sesquicentennial Canada! Or in plain English Happy 150th birthday to our wonderful country. July 1, 2017 is the 150th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the British North America Act which created the “Dominion of Canada” from the British colonies of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Ontario and Quebec had already been united in 1841 as the Province of Canada after Ontario had been known as Upper Canada and then Canada West and Quebec had been known as Lower Canada and then Canada East. Within a few years after 1867 the Provinces of Manitoba, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island joined Canada. They were followed early in the 20th Century by Saskatchewan, Alberta and finally Newfoundland in 1949. The British North America Act was passed by the British House of Lords and House of Commons and then proclaimed on March 29, 1867 by Queen Victoria to come into force on July 1. The day was a day of celebration repeated each year on July 1 with the Dominion Day holiday established in 1879. In 1982 the holiday officially became Canada Day and the same year Canada’s constitution was “patriated” giving all authority to the Canadian Government and away from Britain. After that Canadian patriotism and celebrations grew bigger every year.

are still regional differences but no longer fear of Quebec separation or talk of Alberta going alone. As other countries face deep crisis and turmoil Canada is in a time of stability and prosperity. There is so much to celebrate this Canada Day. H. Miskin Those of us old enough to remember 50 years agoByinMurray 1967 Canada had a great 100th birthday celebration of Canada’s Centennial year. Canada had a new flag since 1965 and there were numerous Centennial Projects across the country and Montreal hosted the World’s Fair. Plans are underway and in progress for this year’s 150th birthday celebrations. Prince Charles will attend celebrations in Ottawa on July 1. A commemorative tendollar bill is being issued along with special stamps and coins to mark the birthday of our nation. A special red and white Canada 150 tulip has been bred for the occasion. Parks Canada is giving away free passes to National Parks this year. Local celebrations are planned across the country.

Here in cottage country we look forward as always to a long weekend and lots of activities. Canada Day luckily falls on a Saturday with a Monday statutory holiday. There will be parades, a multicultural festival, aboriginal celebrations and of course lots of fireworks. If you are looking for peace and quiet on Canada Day look deep into the woods.

Canada is a proud united country on this 150th birthday. There

Standard lock dimensions are one hundred and twenty feet long by thirty-two feet wide. The two exceptions are the lock 44, the Big Chute Marine Railway at one hundred feet long by twenty-four feet wide and lock 45 at Port Severn is only eightfour feet long and twenty-three feet wide setting the limit if you wish to traverse The Trent Severn Waterway from one end to the other. Two major upgrades were at Big Chute in 1960 and combining two locks at Burleigh Falls in 1968 eliminating lock 29. The Trent Severn Waterway is Central Ontario's 387 kilometers of waterway utilizing 41 locks, a marine railway and 2 hydraulic lift locks. The highest point, Balsam Lake is 180 meters (590 feet) above Lake Ontario and 80 meters (260 feet) above Georgian Bay. TheTrentSevernWaterway.com uses 387 km instead of 386 km because that is what they get things to add up to. On their website, you will find navigation is easy, all the key data is on one page. LAST LOCKAGE - IMPORTANT

Follow these guidelines to maximize chances of being locked through at the end of the day: All vessels must arrive at the designated blue zone at least 30 minutes before closing time. At swing bridges, the last bridge swing will be 20 minutes prior to closing time.

Nautical Charts

Nautical charts can be purchased during the navigation season at Locks 1, 18, 36, 42 and 45, or at the Peterborough Lift Lock Visitor Centre Gift Shop.

Maximum Overnight Mooring Periods

5 Nights - Locks 1 to 18 2 Nights - All other locks, Murray Canal swing bridges and bridge #50. Lock 6 offers electrical hook ups and showers (nearby); Lock 34 offers electrical and water hook ups. Note: Overnight Mooring passes include one free camp site.

Balsam Lake is the highest point in the system, not Rosedale or Kirkfield. Kirkfield is 14.9 m below Balsam and Rosedale 1.2 m below. The Kirkfield Lift Lock Chambers rise to one foot below Balsam Lake, the system works when Balsam fills this area in the chamber increasing the weight, allowing it to descend so the opposite chamber to can rise. The chamber coming down must always have more water (weight) for the design to function. There is no lock 29 as two locks were replaced by one at Burleigh Falls. Purdey's Mills aka Lindsay aka City of Kawartha Lakes, is a side branch of The Trent-Severn Waterway accessing Lake Scugog. Celebrate at Home This year Canada is celebrating it’s sesquicentennial (ph: ses·qui·cen·ten·ni·al) or it’s 150th birthday for those of you who have trouble pronouncing that. We have a lot to celebrate in this country. Free health care, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms - Hockey, Tim Hortons and the Tragically Hip. To mark the momentous occasion, the City of Peterborough has gathered volunteers from around the community to help plan a four-day spectacular, awesome and wild (maybe not so wild) celebration. The theme is, “Celebrate at Home”. This is another great opportunity for our community to #LoveLocalPtbo. Stay in the city you love, surrounded by friends and family and enjoy all the events happening. The downtown will start things off on the Thursday and Friday with live music, picnics, the Paddling Puppeteers and other great displays and shows for the kids. On Saturday, after the time-honoured and always-loved Canada Day parade, enjoy the Multicultural Celebration at Del Crary Park in the morning (run by the New Canadians Centre), rock out at MusicFest with Kim Mitchell and end the night with some fabulous fireworks display, provided by our Rotary Clubs. Sunday the Peterborough Museum & Archives and the Peterborough Liftlock will be hosting a family Heritage Celebration from 10 am to 4 pm. Why else should we celebrate at home? Because we live in one of the best cities in the world, in the best country in the world. Where else would you rather be to ring in its 150th year? Before making any purchases this year, remember the great shops in our city that make it so great, from Lansdowne Place to our downtown. Before making those travel plans, remember all those adventures in our community that you have yet to discover. Celebrate at Home. #ptbo150 on FB, Twitter and Instagram. 1967in Peterborough Ontario The year was 1967 and the country was gripped in centennial fever. Across the country, communities unveiled a wide variety of legacy projects, undertaken to celebrate our nation’s heritage. The Peterborough area saw three exciting projects constructed: in Peterborough’s Little Lake, the newly-built Centennial Fountain pumped water to a staggering 250 ft height when it began operation on July 1, 1967; Lang Century village, a living history museum, was established and began interpreting 19th century pioneer life; and the Peterborough Centennial Museum opened to the public, featuring much of the former Victoria Museum’s (est. 1897) collection of artifacts.

In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, and their own 50th anniversaries, Lang Pioneer Village and the Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA) will be joining the 150th Anniversary Celebrations Committee, Parks Canada, Canadian Canoe Museum, East City-Ashburnham Village BIA, Peterborough Historical Society, Hutchison House and the City of Peterborough to present a free, family-oriented event with a strong historical and cultural flair on Sunday, July 2, 2017 from 10am to 4pm at the Peterborough Museum & Archives and the Peterborough Lift Lock. The day will include behind-the-scenes tours of the PMA’s new 9,000 square foot storage

Since 1994

facility, where more than 99% of its 40,000+ artifacts are stored. It will all start with a free pancake breakfast, prepared by the East Peterborough Lions Club and served hot and fresh in the Museum’s Heritage Pavilion. Crafts, activities and displays will be presented by the various partners in the Heritage Pavilion and at the Peterborough Lift Lock Visitor Centre. Visitors can enjoy the exhilaration of travelling over the Lift Lock in a canoe, with guided rides offered by the Canadian Canoe Museum, throughout the afternoon.

Inside the Peterborough Museum & Archives, see the new temporary exhibition, Made in Canada – Really! This exhibition will feature dozens of artifacts that were made in Canada – mostly right here in Peterborough. Celebrate at Home this Canada Day! All July 2nd events are free. For more information, follow @PTBO150 or visit www.peterborough.ca/ptbo150

Also, on the lawns below the Lift Lock, enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of a Canadian militia encampment featuring a bell tent, flags and troops in 1860s uniforms – representing the 57th Battalion (Peterborough Rangers), Norwood Company, 41st Battalion and Fenians. Just watch out for a possible Fenian musket raid! Throughout the event, at the Museum’s Heritage Pavilion and at the Lift Lock, enjoy musical entertainment provided by: the Paddling Puppeteers, the Mayhemmingways, Dan Fewings, and Steafan and Saskia. Also enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides provided by High View Farms Commercial Horses, behind the Museum. Free parking and shuttles are available between both sites, with overflow parking also available at King George Public School (corner of Armour Road and Hunter Street, East).

Camping Memories GOOD TIMES &

By Michelle McGuire

Some of the best memories of my childhood are from family camping trips. Recollections of tent collapses, camp fire marshmallow roasts with my whole family, and playing endless badminton games on the dusty dirt roads between campsites with my brother; these memories are what have stuck with me into adulthood. Camping can take you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and transport you in a few short hours to a peaceful and renewing wonderland, where the sun rises early and the birds become your wake-up call. Indeed, camping in many of this province’s parks have given me a great appreciation and respect for nature and Ontario’s wonderful array of wildlife. One of my favourite wildlife-related camping incidents to recall is of a warm summer’s night when I was about nine or ten. The family was seated around a brightly crackling camp fire and my mother placed me in charge of the marshmallows for that night’s round of S'mores. Minutes later, an adorable furry raccoon joined us. My siblings and I thought it wonderful fun to toss a marshmallow or two to the little creature to gobble up. However, the raccoon was not satisfied with just one or two sweet treats, and that masked bandit proceeded to suddenly lunge in my direction, snatching the entire bag from my startled hands! My mom was not too impressed and the smore’s had to wait until the next night. Speaking of S'mores, it is an universally accepted fact that no camping trip is complete without them. In addition to the traditional recipe (graham cracker, Hershey’s chocolate, and a toasted marshmallow), a few other options have found their way into my family’s hearts and stomachs. Try using a chocolate covered Digestive cookie topped with a marshmallow, or even the marshmallow sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies! Try different combinations of cookies and chocolate, like using Caramilk chocolate for a caramel twist! Happy camping, and always remember to hold on to your marshmallows!

Bobcaygeon

Three Little Islands, One Big Heart By Bonnie Harris

Let's say you're strolling down the main street of a pretty little cottage-country town, enjoying a summer day. You stop here and there to get a closer look at store windows and to investigate a menu. Ahead you can see the locks where boats from far and wide are making their way through the Trent-Severn Waterway. Lots of houseboats today with their happygo-lucky passengers. Maybe you'll walk over and sit on a bench to watch for awhile before a patio lunch. Now you've got it. Your city cares are far away and Bobcaygeon starts to hum its happy music in your mind. Bobcaygeon's special ambiance is backed up by a unique history. A major claim to fame was staked when the village became the site of the first lock in the now famous Trent-Severn Waterway in 1833. Bobcaygeon is actually built on three islands, a fact that might escape you unless you're counting bridges on the way into town. The people on those three islands are united by their desire for a wonderful place to live, to raise a family, to own a business, to take a vacation, and to fondly call 'our town'.

52

And its people, of course, pulling it all together. Volunteers, mostly. This year the Chamber of Commerce's Not for Profit Achievement Award went to the volunteers of Impact 32. They're one of several very active volunteer groups, and you can see their projects all over town. Last year's screening of the Tragically Hip farewell concert was attended by thousands and captured international media attention. Aaron Shaw & City Councillor Kathleen Fagan and her Impact 32 team, were all instrumental in making that happen.

June 2017 ~ Cottage Country Connection

Jamie Henderson and his crew help keep the streets beautiful with hanging baskets, colourful banners and seasonal decorations. Impact 32's marketing team introduced Bobcaygeon's first annual Family FrostFest in February, with a popular snow sculpture contest and children's games. This summer, Carly Poole and her team brought a bike sharing program to town so tourists can travel easily and see everything. They're also erecting signposts

The Evolution of the Chamber and creating town maps with every business marked. Impact 32 folks are raising funds for more docks so more boaters can park and stay awhile, and they liaise with TrentSevern Waterway to find ideas that benefit everyone. Members have also rolled out a new one-stop-shop interactive website VisitBobcaygeon.com, and they continue to look for more ideas, more ways to benefit Bobcaygeon. Now you've found a shady bench by the locks and settled in to watch the world go by one boat at a time. What could be finer? When you want just about anything, it's not far away from where you sit. Resorts large and small, restaurants and shops, beaches and boating, fishing and swimming, skating and snowmobiling . . . everything you might want or dream of. You might wonder if one day you'll find a way to make this little town with heart your town too. Once the leaves have fallen and the 'Grand Daddy of Em All' Bobcaygeon Fair is over, the village settles into an easy pace enjoyed by more and more people every year. There's surely a place for you in this little corner of paradise called Bobcaygeon.

The Kawartha Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is celebrating 70 years in 2017. The Chamber’s history dates back to 1870 when the Lakefield Merchants Association was created. The modern roots of the Kawartha Chamber can be traced back to the founding of the Lakefield Chamber of Commerce in 1947. An excerpt from Commerce to the Kawarthas – Celebrating 50 Years, a book the Chamber put together in 1997 to celebrate its 50th Anniversary gives a glimpse of the Chamber’s early years. “While the fledging Chamber of Commerce members waited for the necessary paperwork to go through its motions to become the local chapter, several Lions Club Members took the matter into their own hands. They created an informal organization they called the Lakefield & District Tourist Board.” The excerpt goes on to say the organization informally came together in a garage. A small building, the Chamber’s first office, was erected on a family member’s property. “Here they hung their homemade sign and stuffed it full of tourist items of the area, from Buckhorn, to Burleigh Falls over to Nephton.” In 1966, the Chamber changed its name from the Lakefield Chamber of Commerce to the Lakefield & District Chamber of Commerce to better reflect its membership. Three more name changes took place over the years as the membership broadened, and members from the Apsley Chamber of Commerce were welcomed after its closure. A re-branding initiative in 2014 gave the Chamber its current name, Kawartha Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. Throughout its evolution, the Chamber has continually supported and promoted the business interests of its members to strengthen them and the communities they serve. Today, with a membership of 350, the Kawartha Chamber continues to grow, strengthening business, regional recognition and pride of place by serving members and communities. Proudly representing members in Curve Lake, Douro-Dummer, North Kawartha, Selwyn and Trent Lakes. KawarthaChamber.ca • 705-652-6963

Is it Horse Whispering or Listening? Now and then, if we are lucky, we meet someone that inspires us and makes us wonder, “How do they do that?" As an Inukshuk Farm group, we had that inspiring experience when we attended the Can Am Equine Fair this year, and watched the Bobby Kerr Mustang Act from Hico, Texas. What made this man so special was more than just watching him perform with his mustangs, and listening to his poetry (his life story in prose), but knowing that his roots are here in Ontario … he was from here, one of us! Bobby Kerr’s background was training and competing with ranch horses for almost fifty years. Then one day a friend purchased him a ticket to attend a Mustang Makeover in Fort Worth, Texas, and watching that event made him wonder? With his years of experience, perhaps he could give this competition a try. Poncho, his first mustang, purchased in 2010 changed his life forever! Poncho’s first competition in Mustang Makeover made him a fan favourite and Bobby Kerr a celebrity. Bobby’s poetry (a small excerpt below) describes his relationship with Poncho …

“He’s opened up a lot of doors, more than I’ll ever know. I take good care of him, to me he’s a star. We got us a rodeo act, He rides in a car. “ And ride in a car he does! As Poncho climbs into Bobby Kerr’s car and sits down, or as he plays a game pretending the cattle dogs are cattle … the evening performance is fascinating, inspiring and entertaining. Naturally we assume that Bobby Kerr has a special gift, but what we learned during the three days of clinics watching him work with his dogs and mustangs, was that it is not a gift. It is years of watching horses in herd situations, learning how to be their herd leader, thinking through what motivates a horse to do what we ask and finally trusting them to trust us? Bobby Kerr is exceptional but perhaps we can be too … by becoming “horse listeners”. By Janice Ecclestone Inukshuk Farm & Equestrian Centre www.inukshukfarm.com

The Simple Way to Satisfy Your

High-Energy Dog Piper loves to run. And run. And run. She loves to jump, too. Sixty pounds of Greyhound/German Shepherd mix, she leaves a wake of broken lamps and vases behind her as she bounds around the house. She also loves guests. She loves to greet them. She loves to draw them into games and races. She loves to join them on the couch and stand on their laps. Visitors depart with bandages from her rambunctious play. Her person takes her for long walks, and he has taken her to obedience school more times than he can count. But she simply has more energy than he does. And on the cold or rainy days when their walks are short, something in his house will be eaten.

Many high energy dogs are also very intelligent; they need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. Without the opportunity to concentrate while she’s working out, exercise simply makes your dog strong. A strong, bored dog is a recipe for disaster! Make her think while she moves. Concentration takes tremendous energy for a dog. Giving her tasks to focus on will help her burn far more energy than a long, boring run.

Inside

Teach and play games like Hide and Seek, training her to find specific toys (or family members) somewhere in the house. Start out with keeping her in her crate while you hide several high-stimulus toys (each bundled with a treat) throughout the house, and then moving from room to room with her to find them. Side note: while she’s learning, be sure to count and retrieve all the toys you hid!

Gemini has more energy than her owner knows how to handle. When you have a dog that has this much energy, you can run out of creative ideas pretty fast. A person can only play so much frisbee, and fitting a long drive to the dog park into a busy schedule is impossible some days.

Make her think

Is running enough? Probably not.

Since 1994

Also, activities that require focus and impulse control are good for using up mental energy, tiring your dog out much quicker. Teach her patience tricks like holding a treat on her nose. Teach her complex strings of tricks requiring concentration to get right. Submitted by Kathryn Rutledge, Invisible Fence of South East Ontario 1 866 804 1250, www.seoontario.invisiblefence.com

A phone call to CAA promised a quick arrival. The four buddies relaxed in cool luxury while Christi and I fried outside. Meanwhile, Toto Bird (our Cairn Terrier) decided to help herself to the turkey sandwich on the dashboard. When CAA arrived all that remained of lunch was a wrapper, a slice of tomato and lettuce leaves. At the cottage an army of mosquitoes met us. Here's to cottage life! After an awesome weekend the rain arrived, as we were about to leave. Toto was missing in action. After searching for two hours and soaked to the bone we enjoyed soup and baked chicken nuggets hoping the magical vapours would bring Toto out of the woodwork. No luck! Peppercorn, our terrier followed her Dad for another hour long wet search that concluded in success. There lay Toto sleeping soundly, like Snow White, on a stack of insulation under the cabin. Who doesn’t love the independence of terriers? June is the time to protect your pets against mosquitoes carrying Heartworm, ticks with Lyme disease and bloodsucking fleas. Superb topical and oral meds are available at your veterinarian. Most meds require a once a month application orally or on the skin. An ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure. Happy Summer! with Animals

Imagine if we could understand what animals were thinking? What if we could communicate with them, how would that change our world? For many people this idea that humans could communicate with animals is farfetched, but after learning of the amazing story of a leopard named Spirit, more and more people might ponder the thought that just maybe it’s possible to connect with animals on a deeper and more spiritual level. Every once a while you hear a story that really strikes a chord, stops and makes you think and touches your heart long after hearing it. This is the remarkable story of a deadly black leopard, originally named Diablo, and his connection with animal communicator, Anna Breytenbach. She has dedicated her life to what she calls interspecies communication - sending detailed messages to animals through pictures and thoughts and then receives messages back from the animals. This is what happened when Breytenbach was called in to help with Diablo. You can watch the video online that shows you how this touching and unbelievable story takes place. Diablo was a vicious and dangerous cat that came from a zoo where he was abused and taken in at Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa, where the owner had a remarkable relationship with all of the cats there except for Diablo. He just remained in his night shelter at all times and snarled at anyone that came close to him. Even after being at the sanctuary for six months he never left his cage, was very aggressive and even bit the owner. They were at a loss as to what to do with him. Even though he had his doubts and did not believe that an animal could talk to a human, he thought that if Breytenbach could change the behaviors of Diablo that he would know then that she was actually in dialogue with animals, so he let her come and try.

By Tracey Allison

and why he was so upset. One of the reasons Breytenbach explained was he was concerned and wanted to know what happened to two young cubs that had lived next to him at his last home. It was at that moment the owners really believed she was communicating with the leopard, talking about something they had forgotten about until she mentioned it, and something Breytenbach did not know about. She also passed along the message that he did not like his name and the dark associations with it. Breytenbach assured Diablo that he was finally safe there and they did not expect anything from him. Later that afternoon the owner was stunned as Diablo finally went out of his cage and into his larger enclosure, roaming freely for the first time in his entire six months there. The owner then decided to change Diablo’s name and called him Spirit. He also assured Spirit that the cubs he was concerned about were now safe. That was the first time Spirit was totally relaxed and the owner felt at ease with him, and felt in fact that he understood him. In the online video it shows him moved to tears, a truly touching ending to an amazing, moving story. On the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary web site they provide an update on Spirit, saying that the sanctuary brought in both of the cubs, now grown into full size leopards, and they live with Spirit where they all roam happily together. Whether you believe in animal communication or not, there is so much to learn from this incredible story, like the importance of having respect for all creatures and learning to co-exist with all of the earth in harmony.

It was said that Breytenbach did not know any previous history or information about the leopard before she went to speak to him. From the moment he saw her Diablo immediately calmed down and allowed Breytenbach to sit outside of his cage and look at him. She began to communicate with him understanding who he was as an individual

Buying vs. Leasing in 2017 Now that you’ve decided it’s time for a new vehicle, should you buy or lease? Well, firstly, what is a lease? A lease is just another type of financing to facilitate a customer’s purchase of their vehicle. Leasing can be compared to “renting” because the customer only pays for the time the vehicle is used by them and the payments are based on the difference between the sale price and value at the end of the lease. While buying a vehicle does give you an asset, it’s one that can depreciate by up to 30 percent during the first year of ownership. “When you buy, you are using a liquid asset to buy a long-term asset, so you have lost the opportunity to use that money for something else,” says Chartered Accountant Rick Gargarella. Another important benefit of leasing is that the vehicle is usually covered by warranty for the duration of the lease, eliminating costly repairs.

the 48 month mark (on a 60 month loan) they would still owe a balance on their loan and may be restricted in trading that vehicle.

Other Benefits include lower monthly payments, because payments are based on the original price of the vehicle minus the residual or end value. You are really only paying for the usage of the vehicle, whether that is 36, 48 or 60 months. Taxes are added monthly to the lease payment so that no applicable interest is added. For example, a 2017 Kia Soul EX would sell for $22513.00 plus HST. Over 60 months, the payment, on a loan would be $446.00 HST included. On a 48-month lease, you would pay $308.83 HST included with an end value of $11767.00. At the end of the 48 months, you would have the option to keep the vehicle and finance the $11767.00, or bring it back to the dealer and get a new vehicle or give it back to the dealer and walk away from it. Although if the customer wanted to trade their vehicle at

“If you have the cash and don’t have to worry about bank financing, you should buy,” advises Gargarella.“You will own the asset and can put a lot of kilometres on it.” Consider leasing if you don’t have the cash to buy up front but can handle monthly payments. “If you want lower monthly payments, are a low-mileage driver and don’t want to worry about reselling the car, go ahead and lease,”says Chawla. Princess Diana Legacy Award Honours Local Faith Dickinson Just before we went to press we were thrilled to be able to catch up with one of Cottage Country's favourite local girls, Faith Dickinson of Lakefield, just as she was finishing off a tour of York Minster Cathedral in England. Faith, who recently made international headlines when she was presented with the 2017 Diana Legacy Award on the 18th of May, spoke to us by phone having just left what is one of the country's greatest cathedrals - in absolute awe of the beautiful architecture she had just witnessed. Faith is the founder of Cuddles for Cancer and has worked tirelessly on her blanket-making charity which she started when she was only 9 years old after her aunt fell ill with cancer. Now 14, Faith's blankets have been distributed worldwide providing comfort to cancer victims, PTSD sufferers and many others in need. Faith says, “I was freaking out and I was speechless!” Faith adds, “It is an honour to win this award because Diana was such an amazing person, so kind and compassionate, and to be named as her legacy is such an honour for me”. Faith hopes to make blankets for Prince Harry's Invictus Games in Toronto this year and is keen to make the connection with him while she is in England. She would like to promote Make a Difference Day in Canada as well, which she has been doing locally already, but would love to get Prime Minister Trudeau on board and make it a national day of community service. Tax Pros and Cons of Getting Married I had an interesting chat with a young client today. She and her partner are co-habitating, but this had escaped my attention - and CRA's - because they are a same-sex couple. So her question was, should we declare common-law to the government? You don't really get to "decide"; if you have been living together in a conjugal relationship for more than 12 months you are considered to be common law by CRA. That 12 month delay is eliminated if the two of you have a child. If CRA decides you are common-law, it's up to you to prove otherwise. The penalties can be severe because you have knowingly falsified your tax return.

That said, she was curious about the tax impact of this.

PROS: Assets like your marital home roll over to your spouse upon your untimely passing without tax implications. You will benefit from a spousal tax credit if your partner has very low income. You can transfer non-refundable tax credits like education, age, disability, and pension from one spouse to the other. Pension splitting is only allowed between spouses. Dividend income can be transferred to a spouse. Spousal RRSPs can be used to balance retirement income. Pooling both of your medical expenses and donations can result in a larger tax credit.

CONS: You could be liable for your spouse's unpaid taxes. Only one principal residence allowed for the exemption of taxable capital gains. Benefits like GST, Trillium, Canada Child Benefit, and WITB will be reduced or eliminated because your incomes are added together. Paperwork! - when you get together...and if you break up. To change your marital status, you must file form RC65. (You can wait until you file your next tax return, but that can cause problems.) It is worth noting that your marital status from a tax point-of-view is not the same as from a legal one. A co-habitation agreement is always a good idea to cover all the ramifications of this important life event. Gwyneth James, Cody & James CPAs, 705-876-6011 or codyandjames.ca

Andrew Pyle, Senior Wealth Advisor and Portfolio Manager of ScotiaMcLeodŽ, a division of Scotia Capital Inc. Your cottage is both a lifestyle asset and an investment asset. We expect it to generate returns in the form of enjoyment and memories, as well as capital appreciation down the road. Like any asset, however, it is how we care for it and protect it that determines whether these returns are positive or negative. For example, a leaky roof left unrepaired will lead to even more expensive problems down the road and result in more time spent cleaning up than sitting on your dock. Speaking of docks, this is another item that will require investment over time. Replacing an old wooden dock with a new composite one might involve thousands of dollars, but could provide countless years of maintenance free enjoyment. Owners will also invest capital in protecting the shoreline from erosion, changing to more energy efficient windows, making the cottage a four-season dwelling so that the yearly winterization process can be eliminated and even raising up the cottage to add space. Let’s not forget the all-important kitchen. One of the reasons Canadians do not invest in their cottages is lack of

Since 1994

available capital or a lack of savings. For many the only way they can put money into a cottage is by borrowing. This is a hard choice these days given how indebted the country has become, yet of all the things you borrow money for, investing in the capital of your house and cottage are the smartest. The question is how best to do this. First and foremost, do not make extensive use of credit cards to finance your major projects unless you know you will pay off the balance rapidly. Over time the excessively high rate of interest will make what seemed like a reasonable expense into a costly error. Taking out a mortgage is a preferable route, though keep in mind banks use different rules for cottages versus homes. If you take out a term mortgage also be aware of prepayment penalties. Better still, I would recommend a line of credit where you can pay off the balance at any time. Whichever route you choose, always make sure you are not adding more debt to your balance sheet than you can handle. After all, this is about creating years of enjoyment, not headaches. Every parent knows that all children are born with varying degrees of ability, and by the time they've reached adulthood they have usually adapted to the world around them. What, though, if your child has additional challenges or delays which are of a physical, intellectual, social, emotional, language or behavioural nature? What then? When the time comes for your child to make the transition to adulthood and go from living at home with you to living independently it can cause some anxiety. Many questions will arise such as, “Where will they go and how will they cope with…?” and, “How will they manage without my guidance?” Knowing exactly what resources are available to assist both you and your adult child during this phase of transition can be reassuring. Throughout the coming issues, we will be exploring the different avenues that are available to assist those parents who are trying to navigate this new and challenging territory. A big consideration for many parents is the realization that once their young adult child has left home and is living on their own, they will likely be utilizing adult services which means they have become the client and are then responsible for making their own decisions. Community Living can help. Community Living Ontario is a province-wide network offering a variety of opportunities and support for families. A non-profit provincial confederation with over 12,000 members across Ontario, they not only work with families but with schools, employers and the community advocating for the rights of people who have an intellectual disability.

From Peterborough to Haliburton and from Campbellford to Fenelon Falls, Community Living provides a network of support with a goal of creating inclusive communities. In addition, throughout Peterborough County, Northumberland County, Haliburton County and the City of Kawartha Lakes there is also an opportunity for adults to connect with Developmental Services Ontario (DSO) which provides information about community services and resources as well as assisting you in connecting with additional support from the Ministry of Community and Social Services. Here at Cottage Country Connection magazine, we have a passion for attempting to make a difference in the lives of kids and young adults with special needs. Many of our valued clients and readers will be sharing their stories and advice with us in upcoming issues and we would like to continue this dialogue to include many others as well. Whether you are a professional with information that could help, or you are a parent, relative, or caregiver with advice which you would be willing to share with our readers, please contact me at connectionmoira@ gmail.com We'd love to share your story!

Nature Bingo There is nothing better than spending the day roaming around in the great outdoors. I so enjoy watching the wonder on kids’ faces as they experience the tiny miracles of nature. Sometimes when you are searching for one thing, you will discover something you weren’t looking for, and most of the time the new find is more exciting than what you were trying to find to begin with. Nature Bingo is a great starting point to get kids outside and exploring all the nooks and crannies around your yard or cottage. Fill 5 boxes in a row; whether up, down or across. Some of these things might be easy to locate while others prove to be trickier finds. Get out the magnifying glass, a stamper and get outside. The wonders of nature await! Emily Ireland

Those Were The Days

Never Too Late

I was sitting on my favourite chair in our sun room listening to the pitter patter of rain splashing against the window. The rhythmic sound had a soothing affect and when I closed my eyes my mind drifted back to all the people who influenced the paths I have taken throughout my life. Mrs. Haberlin, my grade four teacher in Marlborough Public School who made me read my stories to the entire class. She would ask us to relate in writing our activities during summer vacation, certain holidays and just ordinary everyday adventures. If my stories were not complete she would call upon me the second time to find out the endings to my tales. At the time, I felt she was picking on me but now I appreciate she saw in me a potential future as a writer. The past thirty years I have been fortunate to have written for seven major newspapers plus a published book that has been adopted into the War Amps of Canada Archival Library in Ottawa; adding my appreciation to Cliff Chadderton the late CEO of the War Amps who encouraged me to write the book. Mr. Pew, my high school coach who gave me a basketball and hoop to take home not only to hone my sporting skills but teach me the importance of team work, how to learn from winning and losing, planning and patience, knowledge I utilized throughout my working life in the years to come. Mr. Bill Rowe, General Manager of Windsor Raceway who chose me to assist an out of town business that was going under, an assignment that launched a successful twenty-five-year career in management. Of course, my father who never foisted his demands on any of us but was always there with his fairness and wisdom whenever we asked. Doctor Mike Motyer who opened his practice in the Bridgenorth Medical Centre the very month I was hit by a car. We had just moved to Ennismore and we did not have a doctor when someone mentioned this “new guy” and I became one of his very first patients many years ago. I have been through a lot since locating to this area and quite frankly I have no idea where I would have ended up if it were not for Dr. Mike and his receptionist Sara’s utmost caring and compassion. Finally, but by no means least, the owner/pharmacist of the Ennismore Pharmacy Mel Pathak, one of Ennismore’s finest assets. I have considered both the aforementioned close and trusted friends but more so professional men and their capable staff who have guided me and my family physically and mentally throughout the past thirty years of my journey. Try it. Get a cup of coffee, put your head back and reflect on all those who have influenced your life, those to whom you would like to reach out your hand just one more time to say, thanks. With warm summer days here, the first thing that many people think of is the array of fresh produce that accompanies the season of long days and backyard barbecues. In recent years shopping at a local Farmers Market has become a popular and common trend to stock up on local fresh produce. This boom in local Markets – though not a new idea - offers residents and visitors alike the opportunity to support local vendors and connect with Farmers and producers from the region.

vegetables, herbs, root crops and mushrooms; meat, fish, dairy, cheese and eggs; honey, maple syrup and baking; prepared foods, crafts and textiles; natural health products, for you and your pets, and of course buskers. There are offerings of organic produce, hormone and antibiotic- free meat and a range of other selectively grown and cared- for food. By far, most food is grown and prepared locally in the wider Peterborough region. Some comes from elsewhere in Ontario, like some soft fruits from Niagara. A few vendors offer produce from farther afield which, especially in the winter months, helps maintain a variety of fresh produce while still stressing freshness, quality and value as core principles. One longtime patron comments that “More than the food, what I love about the market is the people. I love that our market includes a broad swath of our larger community.”

Strolling down rows of sun kissed fruit, soaking in the smells of fresh baking, admiring the rainbow of beautiful vegetables; listening to the buzz of local commerce mixing with buskers and perhaps running into an old friend.
