Welcome It’s the beginning of the summer season in The Cotswolds and we have so much to look forward to. Cricket is a vast summer sport in our region and there will be many of you already planning your weekends at the County ground in Bristol to support Gloucestershire, or looking ahead to the prestigious Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival in July. This month we have been checking out what is happening on the Club scene for adult, youth, junior and girls cricket. There are many initiatives in place to encourage participation in this sport regardless of ability or if you are new to the game. Otherwise, if you have some spare time or would like to meet friendly, new people, why not volunteer your services to our local clubs – they are all looking for help with a variety of things from fundraising, mowing the wicket or even a bit of help with traditional match teas. In this May’s edition, we focus on the prestigious Badminton Horse Trials, which will see Olympic team selection influenced by the outcome. With the Polo season close at hand, Cotswold Style’s Fashion Photographer, Stef Calleja-Gera, has put together a fabulous shoot from the SS16 Lauren and Polo Ralph Lauren collections. Stef has featured looks that can transit straight from the office to the polo field and from the bistros of Montpellier to the beaches of Salcombe. With much aplomb, music festival season is hitting the Cotswolds in a big way. This month’s competition (P.108) is for a family of four to win a weekend camping pass to the Cornbury Festival and we have met with a number of artists who will be performing at one of our best summer events. Culture writer, Susan Blanchfield is showcasing the many operas that will be performing throughout the county and this month’s Real Life, Cal McCrystal, is the mastermind Director behind the Cotswold institution, Gifford Circus, which will be soon be on a village green near you! It’s time to re-look at your hair and make-up routine for the summer. Our Beauty Editor, Claire Hanson from MACH Management is hosting her unique make-up workshops at her beautiful studios near Lechlade. So if you are getting married, off to Ascot, the Polo, a fabulous party or just need your make-up bag revamping, please read her column this month to find out how to book on one of her exceptional courses. I hope you enjoy the season of May. Best wishes,

CS

REAL LIFE

CAL MCCRYSTAL Giffords Circus Director Ellie Mainwaring spends time clowning around with Cal ritain’s funniest director”, Cal McCrystal has directed countless critically acclaimed productions across both stage and screen. Each spring Cal returns to Gloucestershire to direct original productions for the Cotswold institution of Giffords Circus. Cal’s portfolio of work reads as a roll call of the finest examples in theatre and film. His work includes comedy direction of the Royal National Theatre’s West End and Broadway smash hit, One Man, Two Guvnors, the clown routines in Cirque du Soleil and the original Mighty Boosh, winner of the Perrier Award for Best New Comedy. Cal has also worked as comedy consultant on major movies including Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator, Paddington Bear, The Amazing Spiderman 2, in which he also appeared as Principal Conway, and of course Giffords Circus. Cal said: “My first visit to Giffords was during my time working on One Man, Two Guvnors. I was instantly drawn in by its magical charm and got talking with Nell who offered me a job in that first meeting. Although traditional in appearance, what we do in the ring is anything but yet we do try to be true to a circus narrative.” Nell and Toti Gifford established Giffords Circus in the year of the millennium and haven’t looked back since. The circus is renowned for its eclectic fusion style that blends theatre

and the circus form of which recently Cal has played an integral part. His input into the show has contributed to the unique fusion of bohemian artisan entertainment that Giffords is today. Shows combine dance, comedy, acrobatics, juggling, live music and farmyard animals. Cal adds: “Nell and I love each other’s ideas. She often has a theme for a show and then we talk through how it would work.” Over the last 15 years, Giffords Circus has amassed a loyal following, performing to over 800,000 people. Their signature burgundy and gold showman’s wagons and billowing tent have become a summer staple of village greens, market towns and cities across the Cotswolds, South West and London. 2016 sees Cal return to Giffords Circus for his fifth year as director as he brings to life The Painted Wagon, a whip-crackin’ horse-wranglin’ hell-raisin’ Wild West extravaganza. This all-new original show invites audiences to a spectacle of eye-catching acrobatics and aerialists from far and distant lands, dancing horses, bounty hunting and gold panning, all to the beat of the “Dodge City” Giffords Circus saloon band. Aside from Giffords Circus, Cal’s most recent projects include Don Quixote with the Royal Shakespeare Company, which opened this spring to rave reviews. Widely regarded as one of the foundation stones of modern fiction, the play follows Don Quixote’s quest to become a wandering >>>

knight, defending the helpless and vanquishing the wicked. This new adaptation by James Fenton marks the 400th anniversary of Cervanteś death. Cal joined the company as comedy director. He said: “Directing an existing text is much easier than devising from scratch. I do take the liberty of changing things I don’t like. Naughty I know!” Cal was also welcomed into the company of Broadway musical the School of Rock, written by Julian Fellowes of Downton Abbey fame with music by musical legend Andrew Lloyd Webber. Premiering at the Winter Garden Theatre, this new musical is based on the popular 2003 film and was the first Lloyd Webber musical to open across the pond before coming to the West End since Jesus Christ Superstar in 1971.

Son of veteran journalist of the same name, writing and the arts are in Cal’s blood. He was born in Belfast, the eldest of three boys. On moving to London in 1964 it was here his father took up a post as Chief Reporter for the Sunday Times. A “charming but disinterested” schoolboy, Cal’s drama teacher Helen Woodhouse nurtured Cal’s spark for the stage. Cal said: “I was always an excitable young person and always wanted to have

fun all the time and hated being bored. I think that’s why some of my teachers found me annoying at Drama School but on the other hand my very short attention span means my shows move very fast and I never linger on things for too long.” From school, Cal went on to study Drama at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music. It was here that Cal lived with still best friend Kristine Langdon-Smith, now award-winning director of the Tamasha Theatre Company. Despite being considered by many of the academy staff to be “a pain in the arse”, Cal nevertheless graduated and was immediately given a contract by Yorkshire TV where he spent the best part of two years presenting young peoples programmes for the ITV network including What’s Up Doc? and Motormouth. 10 years of being an in and out of work actor followed. Then along with a friend Cal answered an ad in Time Out magazine to ‘Find Your Own Clown’.

Style Interview

The workshop was being given by Pierre Byland, co-founder of the Centre National des Arts du Cirque and inventor of the FAC: the Formation for Actors of Circus and the Art of Clown. Cal said: “It was a tough two weeks but a huge learning curve. Pierre was planning a production and asked me to join the cast. I was unable to do so as I had signed a contract with ITV to present a live Saturday morning series, Motormouth. Pierre had suggested that I would enjoy working with Philippe Gaulier. Fearful of his reputation I joined his first London summer school for ‘Le Jeu’. This point marks the beginning of a watershed in my career. I found a very like-minded soul in my new mentor and enjoyed the work profoundly.” Philippe invited Cal to perform in his clown show, ‘The End of The Tunnel’. Cal said: “The show had some painful memories for cast and audience alike. We opened to huge hype at the Assembly Rooms for the 1991 Edinburgh Festival. The show was panned and we had many walkouts each night – a painfully high profile flop! We would sneak down the fire escape after the show to avoid audience members loitering in the foyer. This was to become the equivalent of the stand-up

comic’s year of dying in northern clubs.” Despite adversity Cal and the company continued to work on the show with Philippe and by the time the tour began the show was in good shape. Cal said: “I am proud of the work we did then, and I am sure I could not be a director now if not for that experience.” In 2011 Cal was invited by Nicholas Hytner to work alongside him as Associate Director on the National Theatre’s production of Richard Bean’s One Man, Two Guvnors, a reworking of Carlo Goldoni’s 18th century Commedia dell’arte play The Servant Of Two Masters. Cal’s influence included staging the renowned slapstick dinner scene at the end of Act One. Cal said: “I am very proud of the dinner scene. It is 20 minutes of sheer hilarity. The audience doesn’t just laugh. They scream and laugh at the same time. This is my favourite sound.” This iconic scene has been noted as a major contributor to the show’s success. Nicholas commented: “Much of what is funniest in One Man, Two Guvnors was created by Cal, who is a great master of physical comedy.” Following sell out runs, standing ovations, five Olivier Award Nominations including one for Best New Play and seven Tony

Award nominations, the play transferred to Broadway where it was welcomed with open arms. Cal finishes: “I think of myself as an actor who directs, though my performing work has very much taken a back seat over the last five years as my directing, writing and devising career has taken off. I am a director specialising in comedy. Basically, my job is about looking for laughs.” Giffords Circus’ highly anticipated 2016 tour The Painted Wagon will entertain audiences from May until September 2016. New artists and firm favourites form the critically acclaimed company. Newcomers include gunslinging, rope spinning teenage Cowgirl Lilian Konyot, along with Duo Lyrical Lyra, two beautiful aerialists. Giffords Circus stalwarts Madame Nancy Trotter-Landry, Lone Ranger Dan Fortt, jugglers Bibi and Bichu, El Gifford and funny man Tweedy the Clown all make a welcome return. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from www.giffordscircus.com or the Box Office on 0845 459 7469. Tickets are priced from £15 for adults and from £10 for children. Children’s tickets are valid for those aged 3-14 years. Children under 3 go free if sitting on a lap.

Style Business

Ethical Green Cleaning Cotswold Style talks to Lucinda Farrelle about her company botaniclean Hi Lucinda, it’s lovely to meet you. So can you tell us about your company botaniclean? botaniclean is an ethical, green cleaning company based in Gloucestershire and Bristol. We use 100% natural cleaning products which we make ourselves using pure essential oils and other natural cleaning ingredients. We provide a high-end service at a reasonable cost.

What inspired you to set up botaniclean? I’ve worked in recruitment for 10 years but my passion for it was wavering and I wanted to start a business in which I could be creative. I am bit of stickler for natural, ethical products and brands; whether it be food, cosmetic products and obviously cleaning products. I started making my own cleaning products around a year ago (thanks to my Aunty) and enjoyed cleaning with ingredients that I knew weren’t full of seriously harmful chemicals... not only that, but I can’t stand the smell of bleach. I’d much rather my home smelled of essential oils. I thought it would make a great business and felt passionate enough about the idea to drop everything and start it up. The competition among cleaning companies must be tough, what makes botaniclean stand out? Well firstly as I mentioned, we make our own natural, environmentally friendly cleaning products. These products are antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antimicrobial- there really isn’t a need for harsh chemicals. Secondly, being ethical is very important to me. When I set up this company, I wanted it to deliver on all the things that are important to me when choosing a brand; honesty, integrity, loyalty, customer care and environmental awareness. Staff are the engines that keep the business running, so ensuring that they are happy and rewarded for their hard work is vital. I ensure that the housekeepers are paid a living wage and

Lucinda Farelle

that bonuses are in place for continuous good work. I also understand that work isn’t everything, people have families and other commitments and so allowing some freedom to tend to those things is important too. And thirdly, the service we provide is of a very high standard. All staff are trained, trustworthy and all-round fab humans. They all understand that cleaning is a very personal service; it takes a lot of trust to allow a stranger into your home, so we try to do all we can to make our clients feel comfortable and to prove how important it is that they are happy with our service.

What kind of cleaning services do you provide? We clean residential and commercial properties. We undertake regular aroma cleans, spring cleans, one-off cleans, after builder’s cleans, end of tenancy cleans and special occasion cleans. What are special occasion cleans? Special occasion cleans are part of a package. They are perfect for launch parties, birthday parties, moving in parties or a romantic evening at home. The packages consist of a regular aroma clean, rental of burners for our homemade soy wax scented melts, homemade natural candles and vases and

flower arrangements. We aren’t party planners, but if there is anything else our customers require to make their home or office look ready for a special occasion, we will always try to deliver.

Fantastic. So which essential oils are your favourite? There are so many amazing, healing essential oils but I use the ones considered safe for everyone to use and which have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. However, I will always check if our customers are allergic to any of the oils we use, just in case. I personally love Geranium, Lavender and Orange oil. Pure essential oils have many health benefits, physically and emotionally but they must be therapeutic grade. I am studying for my Diploma in Aromatherapy as we speak. This sounds like a great business, so what are the plans for the future? To continue to build my client base in Bristol and across Gloucestershire and when the time is right, expand the business. We’ve got some great online reviews, so the most important thing for me right now is to ensure the standard of service remains high. www.botaniclean.org.uk

FOCUS ON: BURFORD urford is considered the southern gateway to the Cotswolds and is one of England's prettiest small medieval towns. A beautiful old Cotswold town, its High Street sloping from the high Wolds, where you have beautiful views over the open countryside, down to the willow fringed River Windrush in the pretty Windrush valley. A fine three-arched medieval bridge crosses the river at the foot of the hill. The river Windrush was the site of a fortified ford in Anglo-Saxon times. The town grew to be an important crossroads and wealthy

wool town and is today very popular with visitors. The broad main street slopes gently down to the river and is lined with dignified old houses and ancient cottages and many shops all of which appear little changed since Tudor times as witnessed by the precarious angles the buildings have come to rest at. There are wonderful little side streets to explore, old pubs, tea and antique shops aplenty. The 15th century parish church of St. John Baptist is magnificent and is another sign of bygone riches based on wool. Burford makes a perfect place to visit and stay. Carpet Emporium is truly a family business run by Don D’Ambrosio along with his wife Mary and cousin John who have successfully built up a carpet business with a ‘difference’. We are not your normal carpet business with just lots of pattern books or samples to choose from, we actually probably stock more carpet rolls and large room sized remnants than other carpet business in Gloucestershire. When people think of a carpet remnant they think of a small piece suitable for a small bedroom, but the remnants we stock are big enough to carpet several rooms.

the difference is...

WHY CARPET REMNANTS? We also stock full rolls which will carpet a complete house. Many of these offer our customers a discount of up to 50% off normal retail prices. All remnants are perfect we do not sell factory seconds. We offer budget priced remnants to top quality 80% Wool Twist and 100% Wool Berbers, we also have many wool carpets that are now mothproof. If you cannot find what you are looking for in our extensive stock selection of over 250 rolls, we also have over 500 samples of carpets and rugs from all leading carpet manufactures in the UK and Europe. RUGS We also carry a huge range of rugs all from stock from bargain priced polypropylenes to 100% Wool Natural, plains and patterned. Many of the rugs stocked are discontinued lines which represent a big saving on normal prices. VINYLS Over 250 designs and styles of top quality vinyls available, from marble, wood, tile effect and many contemporary designs. DIVAN BEDS & MATTRESSES We have a large selection of different quality mattresses from budget priced open coil, to high quality 3000 pocket sprung, and also superb quality natural latex options. MIX IT UP This month Clive Burling mixes things up a bit.... here can be few words in the English language that have quite as many meanings and uses as the word mix. We have mixed feelings, we get mixed up, mix together and then mix it! (But that's another story.) Mary Berry has made a good living doing it, Rev. Spooner had a word named after him because of it and Dixon makes it possible to dance to it. Mix can mean create, combine, add, socialise, confuse, unite and fight. That's some word. Probably a good definition for Interior Design (or a perfect Friday night!). OK Clive, I hear you say, where's this leading? I had a call a couple of weeks ago from a client who said he had found a chest of drawers on eBay for me to paint. Nothing unusual in that really, except with this particular client I have learned to expect the unexpected. I was, therefore, not too surprised when I first saw it. Sixteen drawers, two metres wide and over a metre tall. A monster. It sat in the workshop for a couple of days. I kept looking at it. It didn't get any smaller. I had been asked to paint it to 'go with' a dresser base I finished last year which is now in a gorgeous new kitchen in the house my clients have almost

T

finished restoring. I knew I had to do something different with this, but what? I went to have another look. Yep, still a monster! Inspiration came the following morning with a text from the client. “Hi Clive. When will the chest be ready?” When I first saw this piece it looked very bland and dark. That was it. I hadn't really taken much notice of its age or construction, except that it was extremely heavy. Now prompted into action I discovered that far from being what I suspected - a recent import from the East (no, not Norfolk), it was an English country made piece and entirely constructed from walnut. Inspiration struck… a plan was made, presented to client and the finished piece produced a few days later. I have always noticed how well the painted look mixes in. A well-painted piece can fit in with contemporary, retro or antique surroundings. I have also noticed recently the revival of the bare timber look. Here was my opportunity to mix it up and make this piece stand out from the crowd. It was far too big to remain one colour and no amount of paint effects would help either.

By stripping and sanding some of the drawers back to the bare, beautiful, walnut, leaving some polished and painting a few, the desired result was achieved and the client more than happy. It fits in well in the contemporary kitchen and is now a unique and extremely useful piece of furniture. So my advice this month is...get mixing! Clive undertakes furniture painting and interior design commissions large and small and teaches a limited number of furniture painting courses each year. Through the Garden Gate This month our media horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith mixes some greasepaint and compost for a plant performance worthy of an encore ainswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire is famed for its galanthus but this May it’s a drop in the ocean as the snow-white carpets of earlier in the year give way to the bells of blue. I’ve always loved the Italianate theatrical style of this garden, from visits over the years to taking part in a performance of Peter Pan in the grounds. You meander your way down from the entrance and like Pan, re-visit your childhood, as you are calmly confronted by a series of follies and winding pathways. The old pigeon house is a delight, perched on high like a giant bird surveying corn-like people dots below. Find the narrow staircase and you’ve got a secret hideaway for the forever young. Woodland paths snake around offering a dappled dilemma as to whether

continue on or pause to inhale the iridescent air. It was this clean pure air that attracted asthma sufferer Charles Hyett to move here away from the smog filled Gloucester in the 1730s, where he set about building Painswick House. His son, Benjamin was responsible for creating the gregarious gardens and also thankfully for commissioning a local artist to paint what he saw, enabling generations later to garden in the style of the original plan. Rococo followed baroque (can’t resist the “if it aint’ baroque, don’t fix it,” joke here!). It was a time in the 1700s of fabulous flamboyance where the garden gates were flung open wide for a botanical bash of the grandest fashion. Centuries later in the 1980s, after the garden had faded into disrepair rather like a stage late Saturday night after a week’s run, the ground’s restoration

“The old pigeon house is a delight, perched on high like a giant bird surveying corn-like people dots below” began. Now a charitable trust, your money ensures the future of this Stroud Valley stalwart. Now where was I? Oh yes, pausing to take in the air. To my left, a log is happily re-incarnated as a giant see-saw – providing hours of fun for passing youngsters and me too! However, if you thought this was wonder wood, then wait until you take the next bend – carved into an old beech tree trunk is the most magical of fairy tale castles – this really is Neverland. As May surrounds us, tiptoeing tentatively into summer, head to the bluebell walk, another bulb to illuminate the extravagant surroundings, where over 4000 were planted last year. Garden staff and volunteers joined together digging in the graceful common English varieties – no Spanish takeover here. Dominic Hamilton (Garden Director) is looking forward to welcoming visitors to their latest botanical attraction, “Our

bluebell woods were newly opened up last year with new paths and benches and we are excited to see what the display will look like. Amongst the ancient beech trees, high above the heart of the historic garden, the bluebell display is a welcome addition to our spectacular hidden valley." Water features heavily in this garden from the fish pond to the plunge pool, recently given a spring clean – all reflecting their surroundings rather like an appreciative audience following the horticultural performance they observe. You can almost hear the gleaming white stone busts surrounding the Exedra applaud, so dramatic is this space. Meanwhile, heritage roses lie in wait, rather like understudies anticipating their chance to shine from late May onwards. In the kitchen garden, which is huge, shoots tantalise tendrils like a horticultural sat-nav encouraging them to take off in every direction. For an

alternative route, follow the maze, planted in the 1990s to celebrate the garden’s 250th birthday and planted out to numerically represent this quarter century achievement. “Turn right at the next hedge, follow to the left... turn around when possible. Go straight ahead... turn around when possible, next left... turn around when possible”. Oh well, if ever there was a place to lose yourself! Painswick Rococo Garden is open every day until the end of October 10.30am-5.00pm.

There are some beautiful indigo colours around this spring which combine beautifully with heavy woven linens and ceramics. The textures all play off one another and are very good set against a neutral palette such as very pale grey or cool whites. You can then afford to bring in a little gleam of nickel or silver to make the room sparkle.

Style Camping

Glamping in Style Sara Chardin will be getting under canvas with Cotswold Bells ow summer is well and truly on its way with warm days and long, light evenings, the idea of a night or two under canvas seems even more enticing. If you’re new to camping or love the great outdoors, tempered with a little luxury, a glamping weekend could be just the ticket. For a getaway-from-it-all weekend in the countryside, without the hassle of wrestling with tent pegs and guy ropes, Cotswold Bells will arrive at the location of your choice to pitch one of their spacious, canvas bell tents. The five-metre bell tents comfortably sleep up to six people in each, with plenty of room to spare. They are furnished with comfy queen-sized airbeds, cosy rugs and cushions, colourful bunting, tea-light chandeliers, fairy lights and lanterns. All you have to do is arrive and enjoy your stress-free stay. Afterwards, Cotswold Bells will return to pack it all away, leaving you with amazing memories. This year, Cotswold Bells has partnered with Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park, to offer a two, three, or seven-night bell tent experience in the Farm Park’s campsite, which opens all the way through to the beginning of September. To check availability, visit www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk/camping

N

Prices start from just £17 per person per night (based on six people sharing) and include the furnished bell tent, pitch fee, complimentary entrance to the Farm Park for the duration of your stay, as well as a cooking kit including gas stove, pots, pans and crockery. Edward from Cotswold Bells says, “We’re delighted to be able to offer our bell tent experience at one of the best family attractions in the whole of the Cotswolds. Families will not only love having the farm animals and play activities on their doorstep, but they can also use the Farm Park campsite as a great base for exploring further afield.” Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park is home to a collection of rare breed sheep, cows, pigs and goats. You can take the weight off your feet and enjoy a guided tour on a tractor-safari, get hands-on with seasonal activities in the Demonstration Barn, make friends with cute chicks and rabbits in the Touch Barn and enjoy all sorts of play areas. Jenni Powner-Jones from Cotswold Farm Park says, “The bell tents bring a touch of glamour to a rural camping experience and we’re delighted to partner up with Cotswold Bells. We’ve had some lovely feedback from our glampers so far and we’re looking forward to welcoming

many more of them this year.” Alongside the Farm Park camping experience, Cotswold Bells will still be pitching tents in different locations throughout the Cotswolds for hen parties, birthday celebrations, weddings and fun get-togethers. They can even organise a stay in a picturesque microbrewery. While the company can recommend campsites or private fields for parties or corporate events, they also get enquiries from people arranging celebrations in their own gardens. “We’ve been arranging some fun activities for our hen parties this year already,” says Edward. “Bollywood dancing lessons, pizza-making, craft parties and yoga sessions seem to be the activities of choice.” For added indulgence, the company can also arrange for a welcoming Cotswold cream tea hamper or a delicious breakfast hamper to be delivered straight to your tent, not to mention the obligatory bottle of fizz. Edward says, “It’s shaping up to be a busy summer, but at the moment we still have mid-week availability and there are a few weekends available too.” Keep an eye on www.cotswoldbells.co.uk or contact mail@cotswoldbells.co.uk for more details. Page 49

Style Arts

ASK THE EXPERT... Cotswold Style asked Don Bryson, owner of Artysan in Moreton-in-Marsh for his specialist advice in Art Don, please tell us a bit more about your gallery and your background? I didn’t exactly take the conventional route to ownership of a gallery. I have always loved art and interior design and when much younger, enjoyed sketching and painting in watercolours. I took a different career route, however and became a solicitor practising in litigation for over ten years. I never lost my enthusiasm for art and design though and the beauty and drama that a great piece of art can bring to a room never ceases to amaze me. Artysan is the result of my "mid-life re-think" and is very much the sort of gallery I, as a customer for many years, would like to think I would enjoy buying from. It feels more like a comfortable country home; warm and welcoming, with a variety of spaces, nooks and crannies filled with eclectic and beautiful contemporary pieces exhibited amongst my own antique and vintage furniture. Which artists are you currently exhibiting and why did you choose their work? Amongst a host of well respected regulars, I am delighted to be showing the stunning work of Claire Carroll, an award winning photographer from Stow on the Wold. Her unique studies of ospreys are beautiful in their simplicity and her digitally manipulated “charcoal” images of horses and jockeys out on the gallops at Guiting Power are fresh and original. The window display of her work has drawn a lot of interest. I love Harry Brioche’s landscapes for their incredible serenity. He is a master of the "Big Sky", his perspective almost lifting the viewer up into the clouds themselves. Harry originally came from the Seychelles and he is fascinated by the changing English weather, so he has a lot to work with!

Please give us some details of a new artist you have recently discovered? I’m particularly passionate about the work of Derbyshire artist Michael Cook. His

work is very contemporary but at the same time has a particularly English pastoral feel with echoes of William Morris and William Blake and print makers of the 30s and 40s such as Eric Ravilious.

enjoy slowly revealing a fresh work from under years of grime and sympathetically cleaning and repairing the original frames, which are just as important in creating the overall appeal of the painting.

Don Bryson

What advice would you give to people who are buying art for investment purposes? My advice to customers is always to buy the art you love - not what you are told you should love. So many people are persuaded that art is good merely because it has a hefty price tag. Buy what you can live with comfortably and what will bring you pleasure. If it appreciates in value, then that’s a bonus. What do you suggest for people who are on a budget to cover their bare walls? Limited edition prints are a less expensive way to acquire a favourite artist’s work for a fraction of the cost of an original. Prints are often produced on a smaller scale, which helps when you have limited wall space. Artist embellished prints are enhanced by the artist individually over-painting details, so that each numbered edition is unique; again, for the fraction of the cost of an original. From a DIY perspective, the incredible quality of photographic images now available using smartphones means that you can edit and enlarge favourite pieces of your own, for framing. If someone were to find a piece of art in ‘Granny’s’ attic are you able to research and discover more details about the painting and evaluate it? Absolutely. Either in house or via a number of genre specialists to whom I have access. What restoration and refurbishment services of artwork do you offer? I am sometimes asked by customers to clean aged oil paintings. I particularly

Bespoke picture framing is an intricate art in itself. Please tell us more about the procedure involved? It’s very important to choose a moulding, which will not only compliment the picture but which will also harmonise with other framed pictures and furniture in your chosen room. If a customer comes in with no preconceived idea, I’ll spend a lot of time ascertaining their tastes, decor and whether any particular colour, wood or texture predominates in the room where the picture is to be hung. I then consider the colours within the artwork and suggest mouldings, which will pick up a particular tone and either emphasise or harmonise, depending upon the strength of the image and the colours within the work. I particularly enjoy this process of striving to find a frame, which will create the perfect balance between the artwork and its surroundings.

What exhibitions will you be hosting over the next coming months at Artysan? Artysan’s next exhibition will be entitled “Go wild in the country” and will preview on 6 June.

Cotswolds Culture The Great British Outdoors Susan Blanchfield looks ahead to the magnificent Cotswolds Opera Season There was a time, not so long ago, when the opera cognoscenti became a little pained whenever the subject of classical summer festivals was raised. There was a faint whiff of a suggestion that such events encouraged socially exclusive antics, such as parading one’s Prada during the intervals rather than concentrating on the Aria at hand. In recent years however, that view has changed. The savage cuts in Arts Council grants, coupled with the fact that 80% of private giving heads down the M4 to London, has crippled many Arts organizations throughout the ‘Shire and the country, causing some to simply dissolve. But it’s not all bad news. Festivals, run by small scale operators, are springing up in response to the lamentable lack of government support for the Arts and these organisations are vital champions of neglected repertory, as well as enthusiastic employers of the talented superstars of the future. Often relying on committed volunteers, festivals can be ambitious and innovative. Crucially, they lack the complex, political structures of public funded institutions, enabling them to react quickly to a culture infatuated with social media, the urban and the digital. Opera and classical festival development shows no sign of slowing down and this summer provides ample opportunity for us to explore and celebrate the magnificent range of productions throughout Gloucestershire and her surrounding counties. Whoever thought that a converted cattle-barn near Morten-in-Marsh would prove the perfect necessary, intimate staging, to attract world class performances and foster emerging talent, without drawing on the public purse? The genius that is Longborough Festival has achieved a formidable reputation for professionalism, without compromising its relaxed, intimate atmosphere, which, it turns out, rather suits opera. As well as Wagner’s Tannhauser, the 2016 programme, www.lfo.org.uk will include

Mozart’s crowd-pleasing, ‘Le Nozze Di Figaro’ and Janáček's great opera, ‘Jenůfa’. Meanwhile, over in Shipton Moyne, ‘Opera a La Carte’ is returning on June 16 and 17. Puccini’s beautiful ‘La Boehme’, will be performed under a marque and like Longborough, as well as enjoying what will undoubtedly be a fine performance, you can bring your own picnic or book a sit down supper in the barn. In the spirit of the community ‘feel’ of the event, part of the proceeds will be donated by the voluntary committee, to a local charity. www.operaalacarte.com. Opera is not the only Festival on the summer agenda; Gloucestershire is also home to the oldest non-competitive classical music festival in the world; The Three Choirs, which hosts a variety of large-scale evening concerts featuring the Philharmonia orchestra, as well as a week long programme of choral and orchestral concerts, chamber music recitals, masterclasses, talks, theatre, exhibitions and walks, rotating each summer between the beautiful cathedral cities of Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester; 22-30 July; www.3choirs.org Venturing deep into the Cotswolds, the gardens of a village deanery in Bampton, Oxfordshire, host an informal ‘bring your own picnic and chair style’, al fresco opera atmosphere; July 19-20; www.bamptonopera.org. For an entirely different experience, Garsington is still a grand affair at Mark Getty’s magnificent estate, where the operas are played inside an elegantly designed Japanese-style pavilion. June 7-July 11 www.garsingtonopera.org. Finally, tucked away in the rolling Cotswold hills, the Guiting Music Festival, 22-31 July; www.guiting.org, has been a highlight of the Cotswolds’ summer calendar for fifty years, bringing an exciting variety of talented performances of Classical, Jazz and folk as well as showcasing local bands. The thing about the Classical Festival is the experience. You might sit, looking

REVIEW OF MOZART’S DON GIOVANNI EVERYMAN THEATRE The English Touring Opera performances, sung in English, to parts of the country that the larger companies never reach are generally excellent and their production of Mozart’s popular tragicomedy ‘Don Giovanni’ was no exception. The potent combination of class and sex as the sensualist Don searches the city in pursuit of conquests, accompanied by his long suffering servant Leporello, was well acted and finely sung. Von Bergen as Don Giovanni was elegant and engaging at first and in the later scenes suitably nasty and bullying. The saucy double entendres throughout kept the pace lively, and the time flew by all too quickly. The lovely Frank Matcham designed Everyman Theatre excels at attracting high quality touring productions and its wonderfully intimate atmosphere makes it a real pleasure to visit. My companion for the evening was an opera aficionado and she pronounced the ETO adaptation a deftly crafted performance which proves once again, what a treasure The Everyman really is.

around the garden, opera house, or marquee - maybe even getting a little sleepy after your pre performance picnic supper, or even thinking of something else and then it hits you; the sheer delight of this unique experience; from the opening notes, to the collective applause; the atmosphere will take you by surprise. Let’s hope the reward for sacrificing your Prada pumps for a pair of flats, is being bathed in glorious, British evening sunshine. Style Cotswoldia

Cotswoldia Angela Chancellor will be spending May pickling her shins s part of their successful bid for the London 2012 Games, the British Olympic Association kindly paid homage to our beloved Cotswoldia: “An Olympic Games held in London in 2012 will mark a unique anniversary - it will be exactly 400 years from the moment that the first stirrings of Britain’s Olympic beginnings can be identified.” They were referring to Robert Dover’s Cotswold Olimpicks, the first of which is presumed to have been held in 1612. Now, most of us at Cotswold Style Towers do not generally lay great claim to being particularly sporty but even we recognise that the events being contested at this annual event in Chipping Camden are not quite what we have come to expect from an athletic competition but more like a re-run of good old family favourite from before the dawn of political correctness and good taste ‘It’s a Knockout’. I trust not many readers will be too surprised that beneath the British veneer of good manners and gentlemanly sportsmanship there lurks a keen desire for some larks with a healthy dose of Schadenfreude. Foreign film crews in particular seem to delight in this display of eccentricity and can regularly be seen marvelling from the sidelines. Mostly astonishing is that this delightfully boysie prank-fest was dreamt up by a lawyer,

A

entirely unimaginable in today’s age of litigation fearing do-gooders, always with a keen eye on the gods of ‘health & safety’. A fairly steady attraction is ‘Champion of the Hill’, a somewhat antecedent of modern events like the pentathlon, involving participation in 4 separate events; static jump, spurning the barre, hammer throw and putting the shot. Not to be confused with the similarly titled ‘Championship of the Hill’, which generally involves lots of water and slippery surfaces, coupled with deployment of hitech apparatus’ such as dustbins and wheelbarrows. Entering teams are often comprised from the local pubs in the surrounding area. Hmm, wonder what fuels their enthusiasm. Apart from the local pub teams, who even in the sober light of day might know what they are letting themselves in for, you might reckon that if the misleadingly similar names are designed to lead novices astray into serving the general mirth of devotees. There is a ‘Five Mile Run’ for regular folk and there is also a junior circuit for kids aged 3-13, a comparatively gentle ½ mile cross country run around the base of Dover’s hill. There are no shenanigans, any entertaining mud will depend on the weather but there are badges on completion for the juniors. No event worth it’s salt would be complete without a good old fashioned

‘Tug O’ War’, a rural sports staple and former Olympic sport up until 1920, yes really. Even sedately competitive types will probably get into the spirit with this one. As an Olympic discipline, groups called clubs originally entered the competition. This system meant that it was possible for one country to enter more than one ‘club’ into the competition, cunningly upping the medal earning potential of any given country. The United States managed to thus garner three medals in 1904. Not wanting to be outdone I imagine, the British teams upped their game and occupied the podium in 1908. As I said... the very essence of competitive. Now I can finally finish off with the event that is the piece de resistance, the cherry on the cake, an event that in the school playground would truly throw the cat amongst the pigeons, would probably earn you an ASBO if performed almost anywhere else and a media darling funnily enough, as well as clearly being my excuse for highlighting this event in these, here pages. We are talking about the joyous art of ‘Shin Kicking’ popular since 1612 it has miraculously managed to survive to this day. A little safer of course in this day and age, steel toecaps are now frowned upon and the use of straw to pad shins (not available in the school playground) has been introduced for softies. By the 1750’s the steel toecaps were common and all manner of potions were devised and applied to pickle shins and rumours of gall being applied to boots to make wounds more painful were rife. Twitter had not been invented yet and if you wanted to harm or insult your frenemies or completely random people you had to face them head on in gladiatorial combat. The Cotswold Olimpicks takes place on 3rd June this year, so you have all of May to prepare and pickle those shins and practice your underplay. If you feel ready and you have survived its equally bonkers cousin, the Cheese Rolling at Cooper’s Hill on the 30th May I look forward to sharing the joy.

MUSIC FOR CHANGE Words by Eileen Walmsley and Emma Letcher. Photography courtesy of Malaika and Remy Whiting This year, Gloucestershire is going to change the lives of girls in Africa. In order to raise awareness of Malaika and its work in the Democratic Republic of Congo, local resident Andrew Marshall has arranged two concerts at Gloucester Cathedral that will benefit the non-profit foundation. The amazing folk duo Show of Hands, along with Miranda Sykes, perform on 4th June and Emmy Awardwinning singer, Vonda Shepard (of Ally McBeal fame) on 12th October. You may be asking what is Malaika? Malaika is a movement. A foundation devoted to creating a generation of agents of change. Malaika was formed in 2007 by Noella Coursaris Musunka, an international model and humanitarian of Congolese/Cypriot/Swiss heritage. She was born in Lubumbashi, in the Southeastern region of DRC. At the age of five, Noella was separated from both of her parents when her father died and her mother could not support her anymore. She was sent to live with relatives in Europe, with hopes for a brighter future. Noella reconnected with her mother 13 years later, upon her first trip back to the DRC. She was shocked to learn of the education crisis in her birth country, where 7 million children are not attending school. She promised herself that one day she would have an impact on the beautiful nation, filled with untapped potential. After completing her schooling and receiving a degree in business management, Noella was discovered and embarked on a career as a model, finding success in front of a camera. She has been featured in fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair and even Cotswold Style. Noella still remembered that first trip back to the DRC as a young adult, and in 2007 she decided to create a foundation that would craft the future leaders of the country. She named it “Malaika”, Swahili for “angel”. Malaika’s mission is to empower Congolese girls and their communities through education and health programmes. The non-profit operates in Kalebuka, a village 30mins away from Noella’s hometown of Lubumbashi. Malaika’s largest programme is the 54 MAY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

Malaika School. It is a free, accredited school that provides a comprehensive and high quality education to 230 girls. The curriculum is structured around daily classes in French and English, on subjects including math, science, information technology, health, and civic education. Art, music, theatre and sport are also a key part of the robust educational programming. Each girl receives two healthy meals a day - often her only ones. Great care is taken to cultivate the leadership potential of the students, from involvement in Girl Guides, to field trips and community service projects, such as planting trees. The newest addition is an e-library, with both print and eBooks in English and French. The library was inaugurated in March by Eve, the Grammy Award-winning artist. Eve is a Goodwill Ambassador for Malaika and lives in London. Malaika wanted to extend its impact beyond the girls school, as it knew that change must be felt in all sectors. In partnership with FIFA, a Community Centre was built three years ago. It offers classes and workshops on a myriad of topics, such as literacy, health, sewing and IT. The centre serves approximately 7,000 youth and adults in Kalebuka. Malaika has also built five fresh-water wells to ensure the school, community centre, and village

have access to clean water. 10,000 people use these wells to get water for drinking, bathing and washing. They have had a marked impact on improving health and hygiene for the villagers. Malaika has grown enormously in its nearly ten years of existence. The school and community centre have grown from ideas to safe havens for 230 girls and their entire community. Yet, there is more to be done. Most pressing is the need for a student health centre. Malaika lost one of its angels over the Christmas break last year. Myriam, a Grade 1 student, passed away suddenly due to illness. To ensure a tragedy like this never happens again, Malaika is placing the student health centre at the forefront of its fundraising projects. Noella now lives in Cheltenham with her husband, James, and their two children, JJ (5) and Cara (2). Her work with Malaika has made Noella one of the most sought-after speakers on the subject of girls’ education. She has spoken at countless venues as far-ranging as UNICEF and Cambridge University, and she has appeared several times alongside President Bill Clinton on Clinton Global Initiative panels. Show of Hands and Miranda Sykes perform on 4th June at Gloucester Cathedral at 19.00. Vonda Shepard will sing on 12th October at 19.30. All proceeds of these events will go toward Malaika’s student health centre. To learn more about Malaika and to contribute to their community programmes, visit www.malaika.org. JORDAN THE JEWEL IN

Gulf of Aqaba boasts some of the world’s best scuba diving with magical gardens of colourful corals and a huge variety of fish

THE MIDDLE EAST Self-professed adventuress and Travel Writer Lucy Garbutt explores the desert landscapes of Jordan – a land of beauty, wonder, relaxation and adventure. ordan is one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most compelling destinations. The country is steeped in history of biblical proportions; from the spot on the Jordan River where Jesus was baptised to Mount Nebo where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land. Jordan’s cultural gems are plentiful with Byzantine-era mosaics, palaces, churches, temples; early Islamic fortresses and mosques; Roman amphitheatres, citadels and crusader castles. Jordan is a land of mesmerising beauty and extreme contrasts from extraordinary rock formations, desert scenery to the crystal clear waters of the Red Sea. Having marvelled at Amman’s fascinating sights our adventures began

as we headed into the shimmering mirage of Wadi Rum with its flittering desert sands. This natural landscape of changing colours and orange dunes the size of Cotswold hills, is an adventure playground extraordinaire. First up was a 4WD off-road desert drive with instruction. It was a thrilling experience throwing jeeps Top Gear style through the challenging dunescapes - enormous fun too! At the opposite end of the spectrum our next desert adventure awaited, courtesy of a collection of Bedouin camel-wranglers. A train of camels knelt patiently masticating in the vast desert valley as we approached with much dust flying. After a pit stop of delicious baklava and mint tea, we were soon Petra is a sixth-century city hewn straight into the surrounding sandstone cliffs

mounted up following in Lawrence of Arabia’s illustrious footsteps, silently padding across rolling ochre dunes through towering canyons completely in awe of the ethereal solitude – with not a motor to be heard. Having bid farewell to our ‘ships of the desert’, yet another desert thrill greeted us at the top of a plateau. Travelling by mountain bike had seemed like the perfect way to soak up the ever changing, spectacular views. However, bow-legged and saddle-sore, I was now grimacing at the thought. I was soon hurtling at top speed down the rocky, rutted track. Any concerns about my nether-region were immediately forgotten as full focus was required on keeping the wheels on the narrow track and avoiding the sheer drop ‘off-piste’ to the valley below! I plummeted off the mountain gripping the handlebars and concentrating so hard didn’t allow for soaking up our spectacular surroundings but I was left bursting with adrenalin. It was a huge relief to get back into a vehicle. The next day found us travelling The mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea

through the Holy Land on the ancient King’s Highway on our way to fabled Petra. It is a most memorable journey through picturesque landscapes stopping en route at various historic sites. Visiting Petra is one of my most unforgettable and awe-inspiring travel experiences. Petra is a sixth-century city hewn straight into the surrounding sandstone cliffs. The rose-red city is a breath taking collection of temples, tombs and amphitheatre and is particularly magical at night when it is

illuminated by thousands of candles that twinkle under a star studded sky. Arriving at Aqaba was a wonderful tonic and complete contrast. The Gulf of Aqaba boasts some of the world’s best scuba diving and is renowned for its excellent water sports. We only had time for snorkelling, but this was magical with gardens of colourful corals and a huge variety of fish. The grand finale to this truly spectacular trip was a visit to the ultimate natural spa – The Dead Sea.

Following in Lawrence of Arabia’s illustrious footsteps, silently padding across rolling ochre dunes through towering canyons of Wadi Rum with its flittering desert sands

I had found heaven! I spent hours luxuriating in the Sea’s mineral-rich waters and stimulating mud. Alternating between floating in the Dead Sea and luxuriating in our sumptuous spa hotel was the most relaxing experience of my life. The hotel’s brand new spa boasted opulence beyond imagination, with flowing fountains, aromatic oils wafting, bathing and massage therapies galore and plates of plump dates to graze on…I was in heaven. We spent hours rejuvenating ourselves in the Hamman enjoying Rasul treatments, soaked up the enriching minerals of the Dead Sea in cool and hot pools, scrubbing with loafers, resting in steam rooms, socialising in therapeutic Jacuzzis and sleeping in the sun. When I reluctantly peeled myself away I felt ‘Born Again’. Jordan is a travel friendly destination full of intrigue, with a long track record of peace and stability…I can’t wait to go back – with my children taking the lead this time! r M & Mrs Jones

Somewhere for the Weekend? Our very own Cotswoldia couple, Mrs and Mr Jones, hosts our travel section. They thoroughly investigate destinations ideal for a little trip away revealing vital tips on a glamorous getaway and also provide the inside track to ensure the destination caters for a range of tastes and wallets. From the slickest city hangouts to peaceful boltholes, you won’t waste a moment planning your travels. This month we visit Jersey in the Channel Islands ‘Are we abroad?’ they thought as they touched down on the island of Jersey, a mere 50 minute hop on a plane from ‘Brum’. With palm trees waving in the breeze, it certainly felt refreshing to travel somewhere far and warm and though positioned off the French coast, the Bailiwick of Jersey has been a crown dependency of La Grande Bretagne since 1204. Mr Jones was in his element; he could visit an island where they spoke English, everyone drives on the left, you pay in pounds (green pound notes actually – remember them?) and being a bit of a tax haven, he knew he wouldn’t be spending squiffy amounts of money on the fizz Mrs Jones would be consuming at the high-speed rate of the mega yachts adorning the harbours around the island. Jersey is a somewhat mystical place to the English. We think of it as the residence to zillionaires that are hiding out, squirreling away their cash and whilst this is often the case, Jersey also consists of many families who have resided there for hundreds of years. It is also the only part of Britain, along with the neighbouring isles of Guernsey and Sark that were captured and occupied by the Germans for five years during WW2. Medieval castles, historical ship wrecks, military museums, superb surfing and sailing, fantastic fresh seafood, cycling and hiking adventures, the world class Durrell Wildlife Park, the island’s own vineyard and of course the home to the 58 MAY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

and windy and Chelsea tractors are totally impractical (Tip: take a Sat Nav with you as most of the roads names are in French and it can get confusing).

Things To Do

Jersey Cow and Jersey Royal potato – this is an island living in a micro climate that offers even the most fastidious people (Mrs Jones being the prime example), the perfect break. Mrs Jones’ initial research of ‘what to do’ focused on the Visit Jersey website (www.jersey.com), from which you will find a wealth of information and where one recommends you purchase a Jersey Heritage Pass giving you unlimited access to the historical sites.

Getting Around It is essential to hire a car to give you the opportunity to see the entire island and with Jersey only being nine miles by five, you will be able to do just that - but give yourself time, as every nook and cranny should be explored. Mr Jones was delighted with the small car that he hired from Hertz (www.hertz.co.uk/Jersey) as he had been pre-warned that the B roads are narrow

Leaving the airport, Mrs & Mr Jones headed off to the capital of Jersey, St. Helier and within 15 minutes arrived at the fabulous Club Hotel & Spa where they were basing themselves for the duration. St. Helier is a vibrant town, which by day is a mini version of ‘The City’ with some of the world’s leading offshore financial institutions having offices there managing all that vast wealth. The architecture is a mix of Brit meets Brittany and a French influence is certainly imposed through many of the buildings. The Club Hotel & Spa boasts a truly unrivalled location as it’s minutes walk to the centre of St. Helier and a breathtaking beach, where at low tide you are able to walk across to reach Elizabeth Castle or catch the amphibious Castle Ferry at high tide. The battlements date back to the 1590’s before Sir Walter Raleigh was governor of Jersey and one must uncover the bunkers, which were re-fortified to command the sea approaches during WW2. After the historical introduction Mrs Jones concluded on walking back to the hotel, it would be remiss not to pop in

for a little sundowner at The Royal Yacht. Being 5pm she was impressed to see it was just like her London days of the 90s going for post-work drinks with the bar crowded with suits chortling over their ‘hedgie’ deal of the day. The following day the Jones’ headed straight to the Jersey War Tunnels in St. Lawrence (www.jerseywartunnels.com). This is a must do attraction where one explores over 1km of tunnels built by POWs under the control of the Germans during the war. Intended as an underground hospital, which was never actually completed, the tunnels today are a museum of the entire occupation story giving great detail from the German invasion to liberation and one ascertains an understanding of the conditions that the islanders had to live with during this time. With radios being banned (and the risk of imprisonment or being sent to POW camps as punishment if found), Jersey’s residents were completely cut-off from the rest of Britain during the fiveyear period. Feeling very humbled after the tour, Mr Jones drove north to Plemont Bay and recovered with a coffee at the Plemont Beach Café. Situated high on a cliff, with steep steps down to a white beach, adorned by an impressive escarpment, this is a fabulous area to spend a number of hours and enjoy a good hike along the coast, taking in the many shipwreck points. The west coast of the island couldn’t be more different – this is surfers paradise and all very cool with miles of white sandy beaches, surf shops and beach shack eateries (Mrs J thought definitely more California cantina than hillbilly shack), where one must stop for lunch and enjoy mussels and crab, washed down with a perfectly chilled

glass of wine whilst watching the waves crash down directly in front of you. Ambling back into the car, Mr Jones was astounded to see all around, fields growing the famous Jersey Royals. The potatoes distinctive taste comes from the angle that the sloping fields lie, being naturally seasoned with the salty air that blows in over them. There are plenty of roadside places to stop and purchase the local delicacy leaving your money in an honesty box. Another few miles on you hit the town of St. Aubin’s Bay and with a reality check you could now be in Bournemouth or somewhere very English south coast with a long sweep of unbroken sandy beach all the way back to St. Helier Harbour. That evening the Jones’ decided to head east and there they discovered Gorey, definitely one of their favourite places. The landscape that greeted them was more like a Cornish fishing village with coloured cottages dotted around the harbour against the backdrop of the magnificent Mont Orgueil Castle, boasting incredible views to the French coast, where for over 600 years the castle protected Jersey against French invasion. Situated on the end of Gorey Pier, Mr Jones was craving yet more seafood so they dined at a restaurant called feast (www.feast.je), which specialises in what they say is ‘simple, modern and fresh food’. They may say ‘simple’ but the Jones’ thought it was one of the best dinners they have enjoyed in months; from a double cheese soufflé to locally dived scallops with a slow-roast pork belly for starters and the best fish pie Mrs Jones has ever tucked into, this restaurant is a port-of-call you mustn’t miss and the décor is fabulous, with sheepskin rugs draped over chairs, funky

lighting and a very buzzy atmosphere – the locals were all there which is a sign of how good it is. The final day in Jersey proved to be a dilemma. Mr Jones being a petrol-head would have liked to have visited the former F1 World Champion, Nigel Mansell’s car collection near St. Helier, (www.themansellcollection.co.uk) Mrs Jones is as you may have guessed, a connoisseur of the grape variety and wanted to sample the wines of La Mare Wine Estate (www.lamarewineestate.com) which is situated in a grade one Jersey farmhouse and surrounded by stunning gardens but they had to compromise and instead, completed the coastal path of the island and drove from north east to west; from St Catherine’s Bay across the cliff headlands. There are endless coves and bays where you will find cafes, pubs and restaurants all along the way. This is also an excellent route if you are keen on cycling or walking and if you happen to be in Jersey with the Little Jones’, then there are plenty of activities for them too including visiting The Ecrehous with Jersey Sea Safaris (www.jerseyseafaris.com) where you are assured to see dolphins and seals or the Durrell Wildlife Park (www.durrell.org) which hosts some of the world’s most threatened animals. For botanical lovers, the gardens at Samares Manor (www.samaresmanor.com) are spectacular as is the Eric Young Orchid Foundation (www.ericyoungorchidfoundation.co.uk) housing one of the world’s finest collections of orchids, naturally. >>> COTSWOLD STYLE MAY 2016 59

Spotlight on... The Club Hotel & Spa, Jersey

This fabulous hotel oozes style and Mrs Jones was most impressed with the abstract touches such as modern art adorning the neutral walls and unique sculptures keeping the decor chic and sophisticated throughout. Particularly in the hotel’s favour is the Champagne Bar situated on the Roof Terrace, an outdoor, heated swimming pool and of course the luxurious Club Spa. The piece de resistance though for Mrs & Mr Jones had to be the Michelin Star Bohemia Restaurant & Bar - funky, sophisticated and of course very, very good food! All the Deluxe Double Rooms offer everything one now comes to expect from a hotel of this quality. The hugely comfortable beds are adorned with crisp white Frette bedding and there are all the modern comforts including LCD flat screen TV, en-suite bathroom with luxury Elemis toiletries and soft bathrobes being staple features in all the rooms. The outstanding Bohemia Bar &

Restaurant has put The Club Hotel & Spa firmly on the gastronomic map as a food-lovers destination. The restaurant has been Jersey’s finest dining establishment since opening its doors in 2004 and serves Michelin Star cuisine created by Head Chef Steve Smith, while the bar area provides a less-formal setting for lunch, dinner, drinks and the very best afternoon tea. Warning: Do not have tea if you are planning dinner in the restaurant – you will be too full! Mrs & Mr Jones greedily managed to devour a selection of perfect sandwiches, exquisite dainty cakes and concurred the soft scones were the best - one must try the Jersey Black Butter which accompanies them – it’s actually a form of jam made from cider apples and makes a great alternative to the standard strawberry variety. In her research Mrs Jones had nodded approvingly when she noted that Bohemia has been named as one of the top 50 best restaurants in the UK by The Sunday Times and is also the only eatery in the Channel Islands to do so. Its chef, Steve Smith, creates a truly outstanding dining experience using a variety of local, fresh produce in all of his dishes. The majority of ingredients such as the famous Jersey Royal potato and fresh scallops are locally sourced while other ingredients are gathered a mere 16 miles away, such as the oysters coming from local French fishermen and from Normandy, the capital of Oyster farming. A feast was anointed upon the Jones’ which included many delicacies: Crab Custard & Tart with Mango & Coriander; Seared Foie Gras,

After a hard day exploring Jersey, one really needs to chill-out in the luxurious Club Spa boasting a number of indulgent treatment rooms and an indoor salt water pool and Thermal Suite (which comprises a Salt Cabin, Herbal Steam Room, Sauna and Experience Shower). Mrs Jones thought her Reflexology treatment absolutely top-notch and Mr Jones’ stress busting massage was the perfect antidote to cure his somewhat crotchety behaviour of the previous week… Rooms start from £99 for a standard double and £245 for a suite inclusive of breakfast. Claire in the County AN EGGS-TRA-ORDINARY MONTH Claire Thayers has been gallivanting all around the county aaarling, can you nip up to Gatcombe, to meet our Cotswold Style competition winner?’ message on my answerphone on a wet Monday… well, you don’t have to ask me twice. Does Dolly Parton sleep on her back … OF COURSE – I would love to. So on Good Friday, my daughter Luci and I packed up the car… Barbours, Hunters, shooting sticks and picnic basket and off we went with our two dear friends, roof down, singing our hearts out all the way. It was the most perfect spring day – it was actually warm. Driving in without getting stuck in the mud, I had a quick look at the scoreboard, a 2 minute whizz round the shops, tempted by a beautiful bag, seduced by paintings, then went out to see some dressage before hurrying into the marquee to meet our competition winner and her ‘plus one’ and what a delight Nikki was… she made me feel I had known for her years. We were told off for sitting down before the Princess Royal so we felt like naughty schoolgirls but I think we got away with it – no one seemed to notice. I reacquainted myself with the two lovely undercover policemen that I met last year and also met another lovely lady who explained she was an animal psychiatrist and that it had changed her life, as she now had to ‘scatter her cat crunchies’ and that she met a crazy lady with hair like ‘my little pony’ who had an unhealthy interest in studying rats… and that was just over the main course! So after a bit of a banter, we were invited to a tour of the course, in a top of the range ‘Rangey’ which Nikki described as beige but was quickly corrected and told it was Kaikora Stone…either way, it was lovely, although the cream leather seats were not the best for dogs and wellies if I am honest!

‘D

64 MAY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

We piled into the back and stuck Luci in the front – who was looking particularly cool with her hair up, white jeans, navy poncho and sunglasses…and we did giggle as we were driven round, as she instructed the driver exactly where she wanted to go. She was quickly named ‘Princess Luci’ and we joked that she may well be wearing a crown the following day as a finalist in Miss Cheltenham. We enjoyed an amazing cream tea, watched the prize giving, ambled over to the water jump to sit on the bank watch the last few horses and downed a bottle of champers with our friends, Sarah and Shannon – the perfect end for a perfect day. Friday proved to be a great distraction, and helped to subdue Luci’s nerves, as the following day – was the big day, the final of Miss Cheltenham! Luci overslept and I had to dash out to get eyebrows tidied, hair trimmed, and squeezed in time for a manicure and pedicure at the amazing new Margaret Dabbs clinic in Cheltenham, knowing that I had to scrub up well. I couldn’t let my daughter down – Luci gives me hell if the eyebrows are even slightly out of control. We now had to pack her car up with a massive tick list – makeup, shoes x 3, racing outfit, eco dress (made out of stapled Christmas cards, which was a worry as the wind was whipping up), hatbox lid made into an actual hat to match the eco dress (that took the whole of the front seat) and her lovely long dress… and off she went with a pack of hot cross buns, for her rehearsal. I thought she was so brave, driving into the unknown, game for anything and struggling with her nerves. Arriving at 7pm, I gulped down a glass of fizz to settle my nerves and my gaggle of mates and I seated ourselves at the back of the aptly named and very beautiful ‘Princess Hall’ at the Ladies College, ready for the proceedings to begin. The finalists were such lovely girls, all smiling, and bubbling with enthusiasm, enough to lighten anyone’s heart but for me I am truly amazed at how much

beauty pageants had changed since my ‘Bruce Forsyth’ days – not a bikini in sight! These girls not only have to look lovely but also have to show how they are supporting charities and recycling outfits. These days they are all independent workingwomen with brains AND beauty! So to cut a long story short, we met the judges, we saw the girls in their eco outfits, we saw them in their racing clothes and finally in their evening gowns with inspiring stories shared. But the result – not what we were expecting – none of us thought for one minute that ‘Princess Lucinda’ would be announced the winner… but she was! I own up – we were screaming like fish wives and to see her in tears as the crown was placed on her head, was to say the least…emotional. So in the space of 24 hours, muddy boots and Barbours to sparkly stilettos and ball gown, you could say it was an egg-strodinary Easter, with an eggsemplary performance by Luci, an egg-cellent result, and she vows to continue Sophie Lydia Smith’s amazing egg-sample and fly the flag for Cheltenham! As for me… I’m egg-hausted! Claire Thayers & Associates, Corporate Social Responsibility, South West www.clairethayers.co.uk

Mind, Body & Soul We discover some of the new, sensational treatments or products available in the Cotswolds and surrounding areas to recuperate your mind, body and soul SKIN PERFECTION WITH CLINIQUE AT CAVENDISH HOUSE by Emma Logan Most women of a certain age will have used Clinique skincare products at some point in their life but they have been off my radar for the past few years with the ever-increasing contemporary brands that have sprung onto the market. (Saying that I have been using more and more of Clinique’s makeup which I believe is fantastic, such as their Beyond Perfecting Foundation & Concealer and Powerlash mascara which literally does not budge.) Mandy Finnigan is the new Clinique Counter Manager at Cavendish House in Cheltenham and invited me to rediscover the brand’s skincare and test many of their latest products including the miraculous Clinique System Sonic Cleansing Brush. But back to basics; Clinique was the first to introduce the 3-Step system; Cleanse: Non-drying formulas leave all skins feeling fresh, clean and comfortable. Exfoliate: Sweeps away pollution, excess oil, dulling flakes to reveal fresher skin. Moisturise: Gives the skin the "drink" it needs to maintain optimal moisture balance. After a computerized analysis by one of the consultant’s Jo, she ascertained my skin type and I was taken to Clinique’s treatment room situated on the ground floor at Cavendish House for some privacy while exploring the products. After a thorough cleanse, Jo then showed me the many facets to the Sonic Brush – this is a 30-second, clean sweep, wonder product and unlike its competitors, Clinique’s brush can be used by the whole family as a skin-changer with its array of attachment heads. From the deep cleansing brush to a head designed for blemish-prone skin with specialised bristles (ideal for teenagers too) and for men, a firm bristle to use in preparation for close shaves. My personal favourite is the Massaging Treatment applicator head,

70 MAY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

which is ideal to use in conjunction with their Sculptwear Contouring Mask. This has radically reduced the appearance of fine lines around my eyes and is effective in sculpting jowls and the neckline – that facelift can be put off for a few more years at this rate! Clinique has devised some excellent skincare that is used in conjunction with the 3-Step system. After using their bestselling Dramatically Different Moisturiser, now is the time to start applying whatever has been prescripted for your skin. For me, it was the Sculptwear Lift and Contour

Serum for face and neck, followed by a second moisturiser the Repairwear Laserfocus Line Smoothing Cream. I haven’t ever tried the ‘double moisturising’ system before but it has certainly made a huge difference to my face and neck - and combined with the thorough 30-second Sonic Cleansing brush, I cannot endorse enough how much this is working. We will be testing more products from the Clinique brand over the coming months. For further information, visit the Clinique counter at Cavendish House in Cheltenham.

Style Health REFLEXOLOGY AT MARGARET DABBS CLINIC, CHELTENHAM by Sandra Paul (the female perspective) Reflexology has never really appealed to me in the past and I viewed it as a type of new-age ‘mumbo jumbo’ foot rub. Seriously, I thought, how could poking at the balls of my feet have a beneficial impact on my stress levels or arthritic back? For those who are not familiar with the treatment, Reflexology focuses on applying pressure to specific parts of the feet to rebalance the mind, body and soul – exactly what this column is about. Reflexology is used to aid the body’s natural healing process, helping it to function more efficiently and effectively. It is claimed that it can treat a wide range of conditions including tension, stress and anxiety, migraine and insomnia. Although sceptical, I was persuaded to visit the Margaret Dabbs clinic that has recently opened in Cheltenham and try Reflexology for the first time. Margaret Dabbs is a fully trained Podiatrist who has pioneered the now renowned “Medical Pedicure“. Situated at 1 Queen’s Circus, in the vibrant Montpellier area, the new clinic is the first outside of London and showcases the range of expertly crafted treatments and products which have seen Margaret Dabbs London set the benchmark within the luxury foot and hand care market. Fusing the podiatry-side of treatment with beauty products and techniques, she created a range of foot balms and creams after feeling let down by products that were either treatment remedies which

smelt gross and were unpleasant to use, or beauty products for feet which, while pleasant smelling, were ineffective on a treatment level. Victoria was my therapist and has been trained by Margaret personally in London. Victoria began cleansing the feet with their gentle antibacterial Hand Sanitiser, before using the foot hygiene cream containing Emu oil. I was surprised that I didn’t wrestle my feet away – I am extremely ticklish but I found the treatment soothing, relaxing, and blissful. The cream smells delicious and requires warming in the hands before application. The whole treatment takes around an hour and is a full ‘spa-like’ experience. I found the cream so effective I bought some to use on my son who, as a keen sportsman, has permanently injured feet. Victoria explained that the cream works on eliminating hard skin, verrucae, corns and

other smaller ailments, if used on a regular basis. Victoria then spent some time at the end discussing her ‘analysis’, which included her discovery of my aching shoulders and neck. I left floating on air and feeling remarkably lighter, less stressed and refreshed.

REFLEXOLOGY AT MARGARET DABBS CLINIC, CHELTENHAM by Nigel Beaton (the male perspective) I had heard of Reflexology but had never experienced the treatment before. As a keen cyclist, I would be more inclined to have a sports massage than a treatment, which works internally on your body. Victoria from Margaret Dabbs talked me through the treatment process before gently massaging the signature products onto my feet, whilst explaining the full procedure. I was given a foot map to review while she worked and l found this to be informative and fascinating at the same time. It’s hard to believe that your toes and feet can influence so many organs within ones body and I found the treatment so effective in alleviating the muscle tenderness in my back and shoulders in particular. It was quite intense with a level of firmness similar to a good massage and I concluded, for me its a definite, a ‘must do again’ treatment. l loved it. autical stripes, floaty macs, effortless elegance and plenty preppy; that’s what immediately comes to mind when I think of Ralph Lauren and this season’s wardrobe doesn’t disappoint. With summer around the corner and Polo season close at hand, we thought we’d take a look at the SS16 Lauren & Polo Ralph Lauren collections to see what’s hot for the coming months. We’ve put together four looks that can transition from lazy sunny days exploring the backstreets & many bistros of Montmartre, and from yacht culture and celeb spotting on the Boulevard de la

Croisette in Cannes to being incredibly versatile everyday wear that just adds a splash of “je ne sais quoi” to any wardrobe. Our first look is on-point for 2016; our female model sports a bold mix of colours in a bright orange tee, baby pink jumper & taupe trousers, hat & belt, creating a vibrant and elegant look, with our male model also in hot pink. Neither of these would look out of place on your summer mini break or sun-drenched afternoon stroll, but equally could be a great sunny work look, with the option to put that cosy cable-knit on if the good old British wear turns a tad chilly. beach for the day, look two offers the perfect solution. The oversize orange shirt can be tied up (as our model has) for catching a few rays, or it can be buttoned, tucked in and accompanied by the pretty floral jersey to smarten the look. The white men’s shorts also double as swimming trunks, so if you get a bit hot under the collar it’s fine to dive in – just remember to remove the wallet & mobile first! Smart casual office meetings, summer evening meals or girl about town; look three offers casual sophistication with refined taste – something assuredly synonymous with the Ralph Lauren brand. Finally, look four gives way to a new step in the Lauren lineage, combining a contemporary jumpsuit and use of black as a summer colour with the classic lines and stylings of the quintessential Lauren look – my personal favourite and one that can take you from daytime festival to evening catwalk without breaking a sweat. We’re more in love with Lauren than ever and suggest a trip to town to go and check out the full collection for yourself. All of these items are available at the Lauren & Polo Ralph Lauren men & women’s concessions in House of Fraser, with thanks to the superb & knowledgeable staff at Cavendish House in Cheltenham. >>>

WESTMINSTER IN THE COTSWOLDS Emma Logan has asked the county’s MPs to inform Cotswold Style readers what they have be doing to represent their constituencies both locally and from Westminster

Neil Carmichael

NEIL CARMICHAEL, MP FOR STROUD All forms of government need to be occasionally updated or reformed and local government is no exception. Indeed, since 2010, a number of reforms have been introduced, notably in planning. With local elections looming, it is worth exploring the impact of these measures in terms of local accountability. Planning has often been controversial in the Stroud Valleys and Vale. The obvious need for more housing conflicts with the equally strong desire to protect the integrity of our strikingly beautiful milieu. To make sure local people are involved in often-contestable decisions in local planning, the last Government put the responsibility of formulating and agreeing a local plan firmly in the hands of local councillors. Unfortunately, the existing Labour-led administration based in Ebley Mill failed to produce a plan in a timely manner. This left many communities exposed to the machinations of unscrupulous developers, chiefly because, without a plan, the ultimate recourse was to rely on the appeal process rather than local community decision making. Labour’s failure has contributed to 90 MAY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

many unsatisfactory planning decisions but thankfully, a local plan is now in place. It is noticeable that planning decisions are now being made within a more rational and reasonable framework. For this to work, we need councillors with a capacity to plan strategically, behave transparently and properly prioritise local interests. The local elections in May provide an opportunity to introduce improved decision-making. It is an opportunity we should not duck. Neil Carmichael is the Member of Parliament for Stroud and Chair of the Education Select Committee. Contact Neil at neil.carmichael.mp @parliament.uk or his constituency office on 01453 751 572. GEOFFREY CLIFTON-BROWN, MP FOR COTSWOLDS This month there have been a wide variety of concerns up and down the constituency. A big issue that I have been working on recently has centred on a school in The Cotswolds. Earlier this month I published an independent report I commissioned, into proposals by the governors of St James’ and Ebrington (Federated) Primary School to close the Ebrington School site and amalgamate both schools on to the St James’ School site in Chipping Campden. The review, which was prepared by a team of highly distinguished educationalists and led by Dr Ian H Jones, reveals serious failings and inconsistencies in the approach of

Geoffrey Clifton-Brown

the Federation’s governing body, both in how the pre-consultation process has been managed and in their reasoning for proposing to close the school. Following a packed public meeting I intervened to commission this report in November 2015, after relations between the local community and the school leadership broke down due to a lack of transparency over the process. The report has been published on my website at: www.cliftonbrown.co.uk/ ebrington Since the publication of this report the pre-consultation process initiated by the governors has been dropped and I had the privilege of attending the Ebrington PTFA Spring Fair on Saturday the 23rd of April and I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of parents in attendance to show their support for their school and for their community. We now have some wounds to heal as

Style Politics the school and the community in Ebrington starts to recover from this saga. I will be working with the school, parents, the Local Authority and the Diocese to ensure that this healing is able to take place and the school can go from strength to strength. I will continue to fight for small schools that are doing a good job and are backed by their communities. I would like to end by pointing out that we have some important elections coming up. Although in The Cotswolds we only have local elections in those parts of my constituency covered by Stroud District Council, which are Wotton-Under-Edge and Kingswood, we all have the opportunity to vote in the Police and Crime Commissioner election on Thursday 5th May. This is a great opportunity for you to have your say on the future of policing in The Cotswolds and I urge you all to go out and vote. www.geoffreycliftonbrown.co.uk

Alex Chalk

ALEX CHALK, MP FOR CHELTENHAM STALKING - It’s time to do the right thing for victims and their families. Last month I launched my report on Stalking, which I co-wrote with Richard Graham, MP for Gloucester. In it we pointed out that the maximum sentence the courts can impose for this serious offence is less than you can get for stealing a Mars Bar. That’s simply not sufficient to protect victims and their families. It’s time for the law to be strengthened. Stalking is a horrible, violating, crime. It can rip relationships apart, destroy careers, and can cause serious mental harm. A staggering 40% of domestic homicides are preceded by an episode of stalking. I decided to champion this issue on

Laurence Robertson

hearing about the harrowing case of my constituent, a Cheltenham GP named Dr Eleanor Aston. Her seven year ordeal included her stalker turning up at her surgery over a hundred times, following her on patient visits, sending threatening mail, slashing her tyres and appearing at a party her child was attending. Dr Aston developed PTSD and was forced to stop working for a time. In May 2015, Dr Aston’s stalker was sentenced to the five-year maximum for his second offence of stalking. When passing sentence at Gloucester Crown Court the judge said he was frustrated that the law would not permit him to impose a longer jail term. That’s wrong. It is vital we give the courts the tools they need to keep victims safe. Where the defendant in the most serious stalking case pleads guilty, the fact is he can expect to serve no more than 20 months in custody. That’s just not enough to protect victims. It’s also out of kilter with other offences: the maximum sentence for domestic burglary is fourteen years. We also think that strengthening sentencing powers would allow sufficient opportunity, in appropriate cases, for proper mental health assessment and treatment in custody. I am delighted that our campaign is also supported by Nick Gazzard (the father of Hollie Gazzard) as well as so many stalking charities. With more campaigning planned, I am hopeful we can persuade the Government to introduce these changes. It’s time victims got justice. www.alexchalk.com

LAURENCE ROBERTSON, MP FOR TEWKESBURY At the time of writing, thousands of people up and down the country are submitting their names as council candidates. On 5th May, we decide which people we would elect as councillors. We were also electing people as Police & Crime Commissioners. Both are important roles, though they are often undervalued. They are particularly important roles under a government such as this one, which tries to devolve powers to the regions, towns and cities of the country and also to local people. Often, local decisions – as ones taken nationally – can be unpopular but at least they are taken by local people. I’d therefore like to thank everyone who stood for election – without you, there would be no exercising of democracy - and to congratulate those who were successful. Normally, when the local elections are over politicians leave voters in peace – but not this year! We are now looking towards the most important vote that any of us have had in our lifetimes and that’s the referendum on our membership of the EU. I’ll be writing more about this but, for now, I’m pleased and proud to be one of the MPs who forced this issue and helped bring about the referendum in the first place. It’s the first say people my age and younger have had on our membership of the EU and the first say for 40 years that anyone has had. It is, therefore, very important. Personally, I’ll be voting and campaigning to leave, so that we can control our own borders make all our own laws, save billions of pounds a year and make our own trade arrangements. I only have one vote though, the same as everyone else, so I hope that everyone uses it! As ever, if constituents would like to contact me about anything they can reach me on laurence.robertson.mp @parliament.uk or at the House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA. COTSWOLD STYLE MAY 2016 91

EXPLA N THE MARKET The Luxury Brand Market Guy Shone looks at how prestigious brands are adapting to long-term growth The whole business of luxury is changing. The London Stock Exchange is brimming with luxury brands and many firms once famous for extravagance are now busy adjusting to newer more targeted, digital ways of making money. After a bumpy few months with brands like Burberry struggling to find financial success -– there are signs that the luxury sector maybe bouncing back. Shares in Burberry have had a bumpy ride but did receive a boost in April. City analysts have also praised the Burberry management team for smarter and more efficient ways of working leading to better-cost control. Meanwhile, its rival Mulberry, famed for its handbags and leather accessories, is expecting to report profits ahead of expectations in June thanks to strong demand and better control of costs. Leaders of our favourite luxury brands are hard at work managing major changes to how they run their businesses but as business practices develop – our shopping behaviour seems to be changing too. According to top personal shopper Liz Richardson, “The way people buy luxury seems to be changing, they are much more discerning regarding luxury products and services, tending to buy fewer but higher quality items that will stand the test of time.” So at a time where pure status shopping has gone out of fashion and the most prestigious brands are available to all via a smart phone – how are business leaders in the luxury sector planning to do things differently? This month I met the bosses of two of the planet’s most prestigious luxury brands to find out. Said Cyrus is the Co-founder and Creative Director of the design house Catherine Walker & Co. He explained, “People still want the pure luxury of beautifully crafted garments, individually made just for them. However the Internet

About Guy...

has encouraged the growing pattern of buying on-line. The solution to this paradox is for clients on another continent to have a local tailor/ dressmaker who can make final adjustments to a garment, which is still essentially a Catherine Walker piece made just for them. We call it e-couture. It’s a growing part of our business.” Bentley's Global Marketing Director Christophe Georges also talked to me about how he believes the future of luxury means blending the best of the old with the best of the new. “Digital technology is changing how we connect with people. It is high-tech but actually demands more authenticity than before. Customer interaction is now 24/7. Customers now look for experiences rather than just products. It is no longer just about selling a Bentley. Our research tells us that while all of our owners are different they all want to enjoy those special moments in their life. That is why we have started reaching more people through our partners like Bentley Golf and the Bentley Collection. Some people are passionate about fine craftsmanship, some love performance and design. Increasingly customers want to be independent and enjoy a sense of uniqueness while also feeling part of a community. This means we need to be constantly in tune with new ways of giving them positive emotional experiences.”

Guy Shone is an economist & business expert who appears regularly on BBC News, BBC Breakfast, BBC World, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 5 Live. He has also appeared on BBC Radio 4’s today programme, Reuters TV, Sky News and ITV News. Guy is the former City & Business columnist for the Metro newspaper and now runs the international research business ExplaintheMarket. Guy spent most of his 17 year career in the City. His previous jobs were the Head of Research for global investment group Old Mutual plc and Research Director for the government backed Money Advice Service. In 2012, he was commissioned by the UK government to produce the largest study ever done into the financial behaviour of UK families.

Conspicuous consumption is a dying consumer trend and the luxury sector, as a whole does need to find new ways of generating long-term growth. However, our biggest luxury brands do not lack innovation and neither have they been slow to act and embrace all things digital. The economic data also tells a reassuring story. Global sales of luxury goods have risen 5% in the last 2 years. In fact delving a bit deeper into the data reveals that the global luxury goods market has only fallen twice in the last 20 years – 2003 and after the big crisis in 2008 – on both occasions it immediately rebounded. So the economic picture in the luxury sector is changing but the folks running the biggest businesses are by and large coping – and many are adapting in some style. Style Interview

Meeting Rock Legend

BRYAN FERRY Cornbury Music Festival will welcome an enviable line up of chart toppers to the Cotswolds this July. A pedigree of the music world will headline along with housewife heartthrob Bryan Ferry. Arguably one of the most iconic and innovative singers and lyricists to emerge from the charts, Bryan boasts vocal brilliance that “merges the poise of Sinatra, the charisma of Gainsbourg and the intensity of Johnnie Ray”. Cotswold Style Celebrity Columnist Ellie Mainwaring interviews the Roxy Music Romeo ahead of the festival. What are you most looking forward to about Cornbury? The festival has a fantastic reputation and I’ve heard great things. I love the laid-back atmosphere and stunning setting in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside.

What can we expect from your 2016 appearance? The band and I will be performing a selection of songs from our Avonmore tour – we’re currently on the road as I speak. This will be an eclectic mix of songs from my back catalogue of albums, both from my Roxy Music days and solo career, with some old friends in there too. What do you love most about a festival? It’s a fresh audience of people who may not usually follow your music, together with firm fans – I love the mix and the interesting challenge it provides. Each

festival has its own unique feel. Over the last few year’s we’ve played Glastonbury, Coachella, Bestival and many more, each with their own atmosphere, ethos and crowd of people. Are you a festival fan yourself ? Festivals have come a long way in my time. The sound quality has

enormously improved and the facilities are not quite as rustic! It always helps if you have the weather on your side too.

Who are you most excited to be joining at Cornbury? The ever-talented Booker T is a firm favourite of mine and I will certainly be joining the audience to watch him perform. He’s one of the key players from the original Stax record label, a well-stocked area of my music collection. Where else can fans catch you on the festival circuit this summer? Cornbury is our only UK festival this summer! We will be stopping by two other festivals in Canada and America. Bryan Ferry headlines Cornbury Festival on Saturday 9th July, supported by All Saints, Corinne Bailey Rae and Booker T. www.cornburyfestival.com

Style Education

Time for a holiday? Paddy Moss, the Head of Dean Close Prep School, discusses the importance of learning out of the classroom As the lengthy summer holidays approach there is bound to be repeated concerns from some quarters that a ‘learning dip’ is also on the horizon. Whilst some evidence might show that children can suffer from a ‘summer learning loss’, I would argue that learning certainly doesn’t have to stop in the holidays and a well-earned rest is equally as important. Research shows, that in some of the highest performing education systems, the length of summer holidays has no adverse effect on pupil achievement. In Finland, for example, the summer break is often 10 to 11 weeks long and they still obtain top rankings in international education studies. Furthermore, exam results in independent schools, which usually have a longer summer break than state schools, do not seem to be adversely affected by the summer learning lull. A change of routine and a time of rest is important for both children and their teachers. It is important that the busyness of school life is compensated for by an extended period of recuperation and time to re-charge. In a school environment, which is often heralded by the school bell and a firm timetable, I believe it is healthy

for children to enjoy more fluid periods of time. Here they can experience unstructured play and develop greater self-reliance by entertaining themselves, rather than relying on the routines of school life. Of course, for many families, matters of childcare during holidays can be of considerable expense and can cause organisational headaches. However, periods of time together enjoying new experiences, either at home or abroad, can help build relationships, which might have been sidelined during the hectic routines of the term-time schedule. I would agree with those educationalists that propose that some of the most valuable learning experiences take place out of the classroom. Holidays allow opportunities to enrich learning and to carry on the fabulous work undertaken in the classroom. Whilst forays to local sites of historical interest or activity camps might be desired, many children’s activities do not have to cost the earth. There is usually plenty going on locally and many free opportunities to broaden horizons. Those students approaching more formal examinations later in their school careers may find the holidays offer opportunities for reflection, revision and wider reading. Further investigations

around an interesting topic, building on the enthusiasm ignited in the classroom and using time more readily available in the holidays, can be hugely rewarding. In fact, any reading, at any age is to be encouraged. Building in a block of time to simply enjoy a book is a worthwhile pastime, although it is clearly a habit that is more readily adopted by some children more than others. Holidays certainly have more benefits than might first appear to be the case. If well thought-through and full of rest, reflection and enrichment; they are as valuable a learning experience as any. www.deanclose.org.uk

Page 97

Style Views

Unbelievable! Sandra Paul addresses the latest backlash facing Gloucestershire Police o you ever feel as though you pay your income tax, council tax, car tax, and capital gains tax (the list seems never-ending) but you have absolutely no control over how or where it is used? That even though we have elected representatives for all of these cash-spending bodies, once in power, all accountability flies out of the window? We are constantly told that if we do not like something, or someone, we have the power to change it by using our vote and electing an alternative. But once elected, how accountable are they? I started thinking about all of this as campaigning for the next Gloucestershire Police and Crime Commissioner continues. The present incumbent, Martin Surl, provoked furore when he authorized the spend by Gloucestershire police of around £200,000 on two police horses. Typically, we see mounted police used in riots, protests, and mass crowd situations, none of which are particularly prevalent in the Gloucestershire region. Both the Labour candidate, Barry Kirby, and the Conservative candidate for Commissioner, Will Windsor Clive, have disagreed with this use of public money, pointing out that the general public wants more police on the streets. Instinctively, I assumed this was a PR exercise for the police, trotting out ‘General’ and ‘Boris’ for ‘important’ photo opportunities. Readers of this column will know that I am a huge supporter of the security services including the police and I think they do a magnificent job on the whole. Indeed, within the past few weeks, two of my friends in two separate incidents and in different parts of Gloucestershire, had reason to call the police because their homes were being attacked. The police response was impeccable – immediate, reassuring, protective. However, readers will also know that I am disappointed with bureaucrats employed at your and

D

my expense, protected in their ivory towers and spending our money as though it was ‘Monopoly’ paper money. Gloucestershire constabulary announced the new ‘mascots’ with a fanfare, possibly not expecting the backlash from locals, including some anonymous, serving police: “It's an absolutely ludicrous decision,” said one. The force has had to make cuts of around £20million since 2011 and in light of this, it seems strange to invest in something that appears ornamental as opposed to effective, operational frontline officers. The police assert that as the organisation continues to shrink, “using resources in a way that resonates with the public is particularly important.” I actually think this is to be commended. We cannot continue doing things as we always have a) we just do not have the money and b) our region’s social structure has changed enormously in recent years. Policing has to evolve just as our communities do. Before committing to the spend, the police used extensive research by the University of Oxford and RAND Institute which shows that using mounted police for high visibility patrols and community engagement can have a positive impact - if the public know their local officers by name or sight; feel as informed as they need to be about policing in their neighbourhood and feel that the police understand and are tackling the issues that matter, then in turn the public will be inspired to feel confidence in their local police service. The public is, apparently, six times more likely to engage with a mounted officer than one on foot patrol. It follows that improved public confidence leads to better public cooperation and confidence to disclose information and report crimes. “Ultimately, improved police legitimacy,”

according to the police. With increasing polarization in our society between the ‘haves’ and the ‘havenots’, plus increasing tension in our community through limp, cultural integration, I think it is crucial the police have a better handle on what is happening at street level. If mounted police contribute effectively to this, then I am in support of them. However, the point is, if you do not agree with the way the Commissioner is controlling your money on policing our region, make him accountable, and get rid of him. Use your vote instead of grumbling about the situation. I’ve listened to the police response and I have changed my opinion about the mounted police. I hope the follow-up research they undertake will prove the investment a valuable one. And, I look forward to voting for the Police and Crime Commissioner and am thankful that we have an accountable system in place, here at least. PS – Quick word about Vodafone. As a business customer of Vodafone you would think I could make phone calls and send texts. Well, I can’t. Why? Don’t know? I have to drive two miles down the road to get a service; then I have to speak to several different ‘customer service’ staff who pass me amongst them like ping pong, demanding I answer security questions at each stage; then I discover they still can’t help because according to them, there is nothing wrong; and unless they receive a host of similar calls from my neighbours, they can’t commit to sending a technician to look into it. Because that’s not in their process. After over 48 hours of not being able to make or take calls, I had a hissy fit (nicely) at one of their staff. The Royal Oak has had a rich and varied history since it’s initial construction in 1628. From our very first viewing we could immediately see the potential and decided that this beautiful, historic pub deserved more. My family and I purchased the freehold in 2015 with a vision to breathe new life into an otherwise neglected public house. We aim to create space for exquisite dining, an ale to suit every palate and a warm, welcoming atmosphere for both locals and visitors alike. Our son is an extremely accomplished chef who has trained at some of the most established hotels up and down the country. He is now bringing his 3 rosette knowledge to the table and along with his brigade, has put together a menu fit for both fine dining connoisseurs and classic pub food lovers.

Castaway COLLECTION

The Hummingbirds will this July make their Cornbury Music Festival debut. Joining a line up featuring the latest and greatest music icons of the last 20 years including All Saints, Corinne Bailey Rae, SEAL, Newton Faulkner, Tunde of The Lighthouse Family, Gabrielle Aplin and more, the born and bred Liverpudlian lads will perform tracks from their debut album ‘Pieces Of You’ including their new single ‘Knocking On My Door’. Cotswold Style Columnist Ellie Mainwaring interviews lead guitarist Mic Kountis, just one of the five industrious working class chaps. Where in the world would you choose to be castaway to and why?

The idyllic blue waters and long sandy white beaches of Hawaii – the islands really do have it all. I’ve always wanted to go but never had the reason. Being castaway there would kill two birds with one stone. What item of jewellery or accessory would you take and why

A pair of sunglasses to protect my eyes from the glaring UV rays I’ll be catching while sunning myself on the beach.

You can take the entire works of one musician to your Castaway destination.

The Beatles. Their back catalogue is enormous, meaning I’d have plenty of material to wile away the hours. It would also remind me of home back in Liverpool. Mans best friend to help me hunt. It will be lonely without a companion so it would be a wonderful comfort to have a four-legged friend by my side to keep me company. What pet would you take?

Name one possession you would take and one to leave behind for a loved one?

100% without doubt this would be my acoustic guitar. I’d go crazy not playing for so long and I could

sing to my dog to keep morale up. I would leave behind my electric guitar so my family could sell it when they realise I’m not coming home. Golf clubs with plenty of balls. I’m really bad at golf but would love to learn. No doubt I’d have plenty of time to master my handicap. What would be your luxury item?

Castaway. Not only is Tom Hanks the best actor in the world, the film would help me figure out how to find food and build shelter. What movie would you take?

Biggest memory item and what’s the story behind it?

I once met American singer, songwriter and producer John Mayer in Wolverhampton. I’d

been a big fan of his guitar playing for as long as I can remember. I didn’t have anything for him to sign, so he signed my wrist. The next day I went and got his marker pen autograph tattooed. The tattoo is a great reminder of that fond memory. You can take one celebrity companion, dead or alive. Who will it be?

Paul McCartney so we could jam together all day long. I would feel bad dragging him onto the island, especially as he doesn’t know me but I’m sure he would come around to the idea soon enough. If you had a superpower, what would it be and why?

On this island it would be the ability to survive from salt water. I’d also love to be able to teleport. Being in the band we spend a great many hours travelling. Teleporting would save us so much time and would mean I never have to book a flight again. SUPER SALADS

or those regular visitors to Gusto, you will know that salads are top of my food agenda. We constantly hear from customers who say, ‘I wish I could create that at home, if only I had the time’ or ‘how do you manage to make such interesting salads every day’. Fortunately, the days of iceberg lettuce, cucumber and chopped tomato with no dressing are far behind us. My mother still insists she prefers her salad without dressing but keeps various oils

Cotswold Style’s Food Writer, Rachel Cappuccini creates a healthy supper for the summer salad season and vinegars handy for my visits. I try to make salads all year round. My eldest son prefers Winter salads as “they are the least salad-like”. But, if they’re interesting enough, the whole family can enjoy them, and all you need to add is some grilled meat, fish or goat’s cheese if you wish. Be brave with ingredients. I love adding fruit - sliced

apple, a handful of raspberries or blueberries, or the sour taste of ruby grapefruit or rhubarb work really well. We use a lot of picked herbs tossed through our salads too. There are so many delicious ingredients ready prepared for you which you can add, chickpeas, nuts, seeds, ready prepared quinoas and so on.

Serves 4 Preparation time: 20 mins

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C. Cut the squash into wedges leaving the skin on, put onto a baking sheet, sprinkle with some rapeseed oil, salt and pepper and bake for 20 mins. Take out and cool. 2. In the same oven, put a handful of mixed seeds or nuts sprinkled with some ground cumin, paprika and coriander to roast for 10-15 mins. 3. Cook the quinoa or set aside ready cooked. 4. Plunge the broccoli into boiling water for 1 minute only then tip into iced water. 5. Core and slice the apple thinly, halve and slice the avocado and squeeze some lemon or lime juice on it, slice the fennel thinly. 6. Local Knowledge So pleased to see the iconic Queens Hotel is back to its glorious old form. It is such a stunning building and I love the new interior. I was treated to fabulous cocktails and dinner by Head Chef Ben Hamer, whose first menu at the helm certainly reflects the elegance and grandeur of the hotel, by focusing on quality ingredients like seafood, game and artisan cheeses. I loved Ben’s brave approach to deep fried scallops and his rich pig’s cheeks paired with local ale. If you’re going for cocktails ladies, do try the ‘Chelspa’, The Queens signature cocktail, which is the original name given to the spa water when it was bottled. A perfect blend of Cheltenham Brennen & Brown gin, smashed cucumber, elderflower cordial, lime presse. Contact Rachel Cappuccini at: rachel@gusto-deli.com; www.gusto-deli.com

Style Review

R&R A monthly column exploring the perfect location to clear your head and spend quality time with the ‘lovely one’ in your life This month Camilla Bassett-Smith reviews The White Horse Inn, Duns Tew Duns Tew in Oxfordshire, not a place I have frequented before. Undulating countryside embraced my journey and as I left the busy Stow and Chipping Norton behind, I felt a wave of springtime relaxation engulf me. The White Horse was my destination and as a carriage would have pulled up in the 17th century, my need for food and shelter was similar, albeit my means of transport was faster and quite content with just a feed of diesel to keep it happy… anyway, enough about parking up… let’s get inside! My Mother and I entered the Inn to be greeted by the awesome Alex – just the sort of country gentleman that you want to see in this setting. He was expecting us and politely showed us to our rooms – two of eight en-suites housed in an outbuilding a stone’s through from the bar. Small, but perfectly comfortable with heavenly heating and a good choice of décor with a bit of a tartan theme – we were happy that we could rest our heads in peace here. I do always like to have your own front door too as the ground floor rooms do – straight in, without having to negotiate an outer door or walk past someone else’s accommodation while they are channelling Val Doonican vocally in the shower or having a slightly heated argument that you know you shouldn’t be listening to but somehow can’t help!

Dinner time approached and we headed back to the Inn, rumbling stomachs were greeted by a roaring fire to welcome us as we were placed at our table. For a Wednesday night, it was very busy with a great atmosphere and mix of young and old. A real farming themed, country base. The menu offered a good choice from gratin of beetroot and rainbow chard to steak or salmon. My Mother went with good old-fashioned fish and chips – enough to feed five hundred and I opted for flat chicken with watercress, fries and saffron aioli, which was delicious. Our pudding choices were far from foolish with rhubarb fool – enough healthy fruit to balance the naughty but nice cream and a passion fruit cream pot with passion curd which certainly melted my heart. Following a very good night’s sleep and despite not notifying the staff of my desired breakfast time the night before (I’d only seen the request on the wall when I woke up – apologies staff) – we set off to sample Duns Tew’s finest first meal of the day. Breakfast is available up until 10am on a weekday, a really appreciated rarity – although unusually for me, we were up and over at about 8.30am.

We were honoured to be joined by HRH The Princess Royal & HRH The Prince of Wales, not in person however but in the form of royal wedding commemorative mugs out of which our ultra- strong-wake-me-up coffee was served. An unusual touch which was especially appreciated by my Mother who has a knowledge of these things but thankfully waited until drinks were consumed before turning the mugs over to assess whether Royal Doulton or Spode. No self-service but delightful Alex was again on hand to deliver our edible desires. Full English – well minus a few bits I don’t like – mushrooms/egg – so I guess a three quarter full English for me – very hot, homely and just what the doctor (or not in the case of a fry up) ordered! We could have had cereal, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, but just a couple of pieces of toast for us and some orange juice and that was ideal. No rush for check out, we packed our bag, returned the keys and set off having had a perfectly pleasing Oxfordshire outing. Pesky Parasites Animal advice from our friends at Vets on the Park Sharing your home with your beloved dog or cat is one thing, but also having to share it with their parasites is another! Every Spring we see an abundance of animals visit us with parasite problems, varying from the very common flea infestation to tapeworms and other nasty creatures. The problem for many owners is that there are simply so many different parasite preventers and treatments available these days, that it is very easy to become confused. So what should you be doing as a responsible pet owner to prevent your pet bringing these unwanted visitors into your home? The most important thing is to understand that parasite control must be year round. There really is no such thing as a flea “season”. Flea control should be regularly applied every month to both dogs and cats, remembering that it 106 MAY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

must be re-applied after shampooing or swimming. So, if your dog is in and out of the water then you may wish to consider an oral flea tablet or maybe a long-lasting prescription flea collar. Regular treatments are very important for households where dogs live with cats as the fleas can jump from one pet to another, so make sure you treat both. In Cheltenham and the surrounding countryside we have a large population of foxes and many of our dogs take great pride in covering themselves with fox poo on their daily walks. Close proximity to foxes increases the risk of our dogs developing fox mange (scabies). This can be spread to humans too. Treatment involves a spot-on which may require repeating after 2-4 weeks. Cats that hunt and eat prey can get infested with tapeworms and so monthly treatments are

advised. There is now a super convenient new product available that treats fleas, ticks and all the worms in one simple monthly application. Puppies may be infested with roundworms that they have picked up from their mother during pregnancy and lactation. Treatment of all puppies is vital before they are allowed to mix with small children due to the risk of Toxocara infestation, which can cause blindness in children. If you are confused by the huge variety of different parasite treatments available give your veterinary practice a call. Most practices will be only too pleased to give you free advice about the right products for your pet’s particular lifestyle and risks. Getting Personal Cotswold Style’s Fitness Expert, Luciano Kydd tells you about the people he works with on a daily basis It has been a little over a year now since I have been contributing to the health and fitness section of this magazine and I thought I would therefore introduce myself to our new readers, to the services I provide in your area. My company is Kydd Fitness and I am a personal trainer/coach, based in Cheltenham and London. I help individuals like you to move, look and feel great about your body. This can be through the byproduct of losing weight and fat, while building lean (tone) muscles and improving fitness. I help my clients to achieve this through the implementation of strength training (weight training in various forms) with a combination of aerobic and anaerobic training coupled with lifestyle management and nutritional coaching. I help individuals to modify old habits with something they can sustain for the long term of their health and wellness benefits, in order to bring about a positive change in their mind-set. Most of the individuals, believe it or not, are someone like you who maybe in a position of pain in some form or another and is unsure of what is needed - due to the mass of information on the internet or all the confusing information being thrown at us through the various social media channels. That is why the biggest part of my training is not to just dish out exercises (which is what is commonly believed that is all personal trainers do) but more to pass on my knowledge and education to my clients so they have the tools to continue to get results long after they have finished using my services. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing someone who seeks out my services and after 3 months or 2 years down the road, they walk away with a renewed body transformation either mentally or physically and with the mindset that they can achieve great things if they apply themselves, if they put the information to use and trust what I’m saying. Training can take the format of either indoor training (1-2-1 or semi-private 2-4 persons) or outdoor group training (12 max).

You don’t have to take my word for it here are some client success stories...

to keep progressing for years to come, along with helping to re-programming my mind-set to look at this as a lifestyle change, instead of a 12 week programme. I have lost 4 dress sizes & counting.

I am now full of energy and have been getting compliments on my new figure and been able to wear a dress that hadn’t fit me for over 10 years - it’s even getting a bit baggy now!

David

Mary I’m lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Luciano and finally learn the techniques that really work. His phrases, 'Squeeze your glutes’ and 'focus ladies' often pop into my head when I am at the gym!

Jane I have tried every diet under the sun over the past 30 plus years and have never stuck to any or seen any lasting results. Then I met Luciano - where I have not only managed to keep my weight off but have learnt the basic fundamentals of nutrition

Luciano works individually on getting techniques and body positions correct to get the most out of your exercises. Working alongside this, is all the nutritional and lifestyle information that gets you to plan and analyse what you do and eat to get the best effect on your body. My first 12 weeks are done and what a transformation, as I lost nearly 10cm off my waist and 9kg in weight, as well as running at least 3 times a week but more importantly, feeling good about myself and my appearance.

Whether your is goal to lose weight, tone up and look great, or just get some clarity on all the mud of information on the internet to achieve your goals I’m sure my services can be of help to you. Style Sport

Hats Off To Her Majesty! Nigel Aplin, Betlive Radio’s expert racing pundit, reflects on The Queen’s love of horseracing s The Queens turns 90, we look at her life enduring passion for her favourite leisure activity, horse racing. Ever since she was a child, Elizabeth II has had a passion for horses and 80 years on that passion is still as strong. Her Majesty takes a particular interest in the breeding of thoroughbreds for horse racing and in her time has owned countless racehorses under the guidance of Henry Herbert, 7th Earl of Carnarvon and John Warren, the Queen’s racing managers. Princess Elizabeth was given her first horse at the age of 4; a Shetland pony called Peggy. The pony was bought as a present for Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret, by their grandfather, King George V. It was here that Her Majesty’s lifelong love for horses began. Even though she didn’t get her first horse until the age of 4, her first riding lesson took place in January 1930 when she was just 3 years old. When Elizabeth became monarch in 1952, she inherited the royal colours: purple, gold braid, scarlet sleeves, black velvet cap with gold fringe. These colours have gone on to see great success in the last 60 years whilst she has owned them. Her first winner came just months after she inherited the colours when Choir Boy passed the winning post to claim the Wilburton Handicap at Newmarket in May 1952. The Queen currently has won over 1,600 races

A

making her one of the most successful racehorse owners in history. She has also won every one of the five British Classic Races, many multiple times, except the Epsom Derby, a race that the Queen has yet to grasp finishing agonizingly close in the year of her coronation, 1953, where Aureole finished second to Pinza. In 1954 and 1957, she was named British flat racing Champion Owner, the first reigning monarch ever to do so twice. She also recently won the Racehorse Owners Association Owner of the Year award in 2013 after her magnificent win with Estimate in the Ascot Gold Cup. There are three races named in honour of the Queen, those being the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes, the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Royal Ascot is said to be the first event that the Queen puts down on her calendar every year. The five day event begins each day with the Royal Procession – the arrival of The Queen and the Royal party in horse-drawn landaus, which parade along the track in front of the crowd. The Royal Procession dates back to the 1820s and the reign of King George IV. The Queen

takes a close personal interest in the running of Ascot and is kept informed of the order of running and the development of the racing programme at the Royal Meeting. As of yet, Her Majesty has had 22 winners at Ascot, most recently Estimate. As with her mother, the love affair will go on and her appreciation of a winner will continue to induce girl like giggles of delight as it did all those years ago. Long may it continue. This year's Royal Meeting runs between Tuesday 14th June and Saturday 18th June and will be featured in our next edition. Nigel Aplin, formally Head of Broadcast for William Hill, is founder of www.betliveradio.com, which features a daily digest of betting banter.

From BAT to BALL The smell of cut grass and the sound of leather on willow are one of the age-old signals that the summer is finally here. At Cricket Clubs across the Cotswolds there is plenty to look forward to in 2016. From Poulton’s 125th anniversary celebrations to a new under 11 league for girls we take a look at some of the positive stories at all levels of the cricketing spectrum. Charlton Kings Cricket Club

Established in 1885, Charlton Kings Cricket Club has some history. This legacy has been threatened for the past 4 years due to a widely documented and costly land dispute. However, with the court case finally over, the club now looks forward to a very bright future at the heart of the Cheltenham community. We are first and foremost a Community club and aim to be accessible to as many people as possible. Perhaps this is why we have one of the most vibrant youth sections in the county and certainly within the Cheltenham area. At the heart of the youth section are the dedicated volunteer coaches who tirelessly commit hours of their time, coaching, organising, running matches, preparing the boys and girls for representative trials and most importantly ensuring everyone has a great time! CKCC in the coming season is again providing more junior cricket than any other club in the county, with multiple boys and girls teams from U7U17 ages groups, with many of these players going on to represent the District and County teams. At senior level, we run 4 Adult men’s teams at weekends, a very successful Women’s team and several mid-week teams. What makes us different? Perhaps it’s because people can see we care about each and every child/adult in our cricketing care and that if they have an interest in the game we’ll do our best to nurture and develop that interest. Maybe it’s because we will provide a game of cricket for everyone, no matter what your level, experience or expertise, adult or child. We pride ourselves on providing an opportunity for ALL members to play matches whether they are County 112 MAY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

Chipping Camden Cricket Club

A year after starting a youth section for the first time, Chipping Camden Cricket Club is going from strength to strength. The club has launched its first hardball league team at under 13 level and is expecting its junior membership to increase to around 140. Much of the club’s intake of young players came from a Chance to Shine project in local primary schools run in partnership with the Gloucestershire Cricket Board.

To help them cater for their burgeoning junior ranks the club recently hosted its own Coach Support Workers course in order to get more people to help at training nights. Youngsters also have the perfect role model in the form of 16-year-old Sam Groves who won a place on Gloucestershire’s Academy after impressing for the county under 15s. Youth practice takes place on Friday nights. For more information email: juniors@camdencricket.co.uk

From their ever-growing junior section through to their improving senior sides there is plenty of cause for optimism at one of Gloucestershire’s most picturesque grounds, Dumbleton ahead of the new season.2016 will see the club field a league 3rd XI for the first time, with plans afoot to create a home for them in the field next door to the current pitch. Dumbleton’s impressive foundations have been built on a team of volunteers that includes 26 trained coaches and 12 teenagers who recently took a cricket leadership course. As part of the “Cricket Activators course each of the participants will give 10 hours of their time to help the club with everything from coaching to fundraising. The

growing number of helpers has proved crucial with expansion of the junior section from 109 to 190 junior members in the last three years. Dumbleton now run eight age group teams from Under 9 to Under 16 including three girls teams playing in competitive leagues. In recent years the club has also seen a huge increase in the number of players picked for Gloucestershire county and district age group squads. Bourton Vale Cricket Club

Situated at Rissington Rd Bourton on the Water, this is a well established Cricket Club with history dating as far back as 1883. We now have a number of Junior Teams, a Ladies Team and 3 Senior Teams. Almost every day through the summer there will be a match taking place at our beautiful traditional ground just along the road past Birdland . We have many component parts of the club all working in harmony. In

order to keep the club functioning we have a loyal group of volunteers to assist in coaching, managing or providing transport for Junior Teams. Additionally our Ground requires regular maintenance and upgrading to keep the excellent standards that are well renowned in local sporting circles. We host a number of various age group Representative Matches and proudly host MCC during our annual Cricket Festival in the first week of July. On many occasions our high quality batting wicket and fast outfield have received significant praise. Great credit goes justifiably to our team looking after the ground. Whilst our Clubhouse is now very much in need of redevelopment this the focus of attention for our current Committee and we are engaged in raising funds in order to fund an upgrade to the standard merited by our club. Our Senior Teams are maintaining their position in the West of England Premier League, our Ladies Team is reaching the highest local standards with Caroline Ardron being voted League Bowler of the Year and our Junior sections are producing County Standard Age Group players. >>> COTSWOLD STYLE MAY 2016 113

This year our Committee almost entirely consists of new and enthusiastic people who wish to create a more diverse and inclusive club. We genuinely wish to be more a part of the local community and to invite more of our friends and neighbours in or around Bourton to be a part of our club. For any information about Junior Membership, Adult Players and opportunities to join us, do take a look at www.Bourtoncricket.co.uk. All news fixtures and results will be posted there through the year. We already have a good number of volunteers giving their time in all of these areas but we are seeking to offer more opportunities for local people who would enjoy being part of a team and have some available time. Making teas, mowing grass, tending gardens, helping in the Bar or just doing a little washing up. Any task may seem a little mundane but acting in conjunction with others and participating towards the combined aim of keeping our Club up to its traditional excellence really is hugely rewarding. As the new season approaches we would like to hear from you if you can spare any small amount of time. So what’s in it for you? Friendship, pride, a sense of achievement and being part of a very ambitious and successful traditional English Cricket Club. Whatever age you may be, young or mature, whatever capabilities you

officer Lisa Pagett. She said: “It is fantastic to see girls’ cricket continue to flourish in the Cotswolds. Thanks to David the Cotswold District Cricket Association (CDCA), and the successful Cotswold Women’s League, the clubs in this area are leading the way for women and girls cricket in Gloucestershire.”

Girls Under 11 League

Two competitions designed to replicate the razzmatazz of professional T20 tournaments are reinvigorating clubs in the Cotswolds. Seven teams from the area will compete in the second Gloucestershire Under 19 T20 Cup with a further seven taking part in the inaugural Under 16 T20. Both competitions – which feature coloured clothing, pink balls and music – have had a positive impact on keeping teenagers in the game and getting them to take a leading role at their clubs. Winchcombe Warriors are one of five new teams to enter the expanded Under 19 cup – which will have its final at the Brightside Ground, Bristol, home of Gloucestershire Cricket. Club secretary Ann Willemstein said the tournament had enthused the whole

Girls’ cricket continues to thrive in the Cotswolds with the formation of the county’s first ever Under 11 league. Fairford, Bourton Vale, Great Rissington, Charlton Kings, Slaughters United and Cirencester are all entering teams for the softball competition which gets underway on May 16. The league has been set-up by Fairford’s David Taylor, who has also overseen the national award-winning Chance to Shine schools coaching programme in the area. He also helped set up at the successful Cotswold Women’s League and the Under 13 Girls competition. playing membership, with the young players taking the lead. She said: “Usually in April when competing with rugby and football and dark evenings and chilly nights we are lucky to get six adult players turn up but this evening we had 17. “The main reason is the U19 T20 - it has set our youngsters on fire! They have their own Facebook page, are planning their coloured outfit and music themes. My own son was made captain and as a result cleaned the whole bar, freezers and restocked without being asked! “I know it is early days but as an exercise in regenerating the youth of the club it is already paying dividends.” And it has been a similar story at other clubs. As well as bringing players back to competitive cricket, the competitions have had the knock-on effect of getting clubs youngsters to join committees and take a leading role in organising and running fundraising events. Other Cotswold clubs taking part in the U19 tournament include last year’s beaten finalists Cotswold Chargers (North Cotswold Young Cricketers), Poulton Panthers and Cirencester Cavaliers. Teams for the Under 16 competition include the Malmesbury Mishaps and the Vale Vikings (Bourton Vale). COTSWOLD STYLE MAY 2016 115

The Cotswold Gent Looking ahead to a summer of sporting events on the social calendar… fter the bizarre snowfalls of April, thoughts chez Cotswold Gent have turned once again somewhat hopefully to summer sports and the pursuit thereof. Despite grey leaden skies and a good deal too much moisture for most of us, except perhaps the farming fraternity, the change to the summer clock and with the summer term at schools (my own used to call this term Cricket Quarter), a note of optimism for the lazy, hazy, days of summer has firmly inserted itself into my consciousness. Just writing about it delivers an almost perceptible sense of warmth to ones winter weary bones! I am sure that it will come as no surprise to my faithful readers that cricket is greatly beloved by me although I confess that relatively few opportunities emerge to actually spend some time watching it these days. A carefully snatched couple of hours in the company of Aggers and Blowers on the wireless are often the most I can hope for! I am afraid as a sport it receives rather harsh treatment by my dear family who, as they are largely women (in fact since the passing of my beloved dog last summer - exclusively women) and almost exclusively addicted to all things equestrian - are deeply suspicious of a game that has been developed to last up to five days, is punctuated by lunch and tea and played almost exclusively by men - although I did point out that our

A

Women’s Cricket team did rather well in the recent T20 World Cup (as did our chaps by coincidence) and were both only defeated in the final by our old foe from the West Indies. This still did not cut the mustard however and I was most forcefully reminded that there were far more important and relevant sporting events to focus upon. Equestrianism and the Cotswolds are inevitably inextricably linked whether it is racing, eventing, hunting or polo. For some weeks now my dear neighbour Riccardo has been exercising his polo ponies by apparently taking them for long walks in an effort to bring them to a state of fitness for the upcoming season. As they gently clatter past my house every day, it is difficult to avoid the exhortations of my dear wife suggesting that I might well benefit from the same. We are spoilt for choice in Gloucestershire with polo being played from now on until late August in Cirencester Park, Longdole, Edgeworth and the Beaufort being just a few of the clubs where one can go and see really entertaining polo being played almost every weekend. It is a sport that my dear wife used to play with considerable style and panache (she has retired now, luckily with all her teeth and bones intact), as well as a good deal of courage - and despite its rather depleting effect on the old bank account - it is a fantastic way to while away a lazy summer afternoon. In

fact it has recently been taken up by my youngest daughter, with great enthusiasm (she is only twelve) and so is a sport that appeals across all age groups. However before the polo begins in earnest we have the most exciting threeday event in the entire sporting calendar to enjoy. The first week of May brings with it the festival of British eventing that is Badminton. Hosted every year by the Duke of Beaufort on his fabulous estate, it is without question (and with the greatest respect to Gatcombe and other fine events) the most prestigious event in the UK eventing calendar. Sponsored as it has been by Mitsubishi for the past twenty years or so, it is a showcase for the finest event riders from all over the world. Made more exciting by the fact that this is an Olympic year and so team selection will be influenced by the outcome. It will be a truly fabulous three days of sporting endeavour and bravery. Now the largest event of its type in Europe, more than two hundred and fifty thousand people will visit over the course of the entire event. If you decide to go to any equestrian event in the coming months - then this one would be the one not to miss. As I write this I am reminded that my middle daughter is almost beside herself with excitement at the prospect of three days of glorious competition ahead. If you are able to, dear reader and have a spare day in the second weekend of May – then this is my sporting choice for families to attend - at least for this week at any rate! Redefining its SUV Sector – New Volkswagen Tiguan is open for order he first versions of the dynamic new Tiguan SUV have opened for order at Volkswagen UK Retailers nationwide. Designed and engineered to redefine the compact SUV segment, the new Tiguan introduces class-leading levels of interior space, practicality and safety while also debuting cutting-edge technology and connectivity. New from the ground up, today’s Tiguan brings previously unseen levels of quality and refinement to its sector with a premium look and feel that belie its price. The first new Volkswagen SUV to sit on the innovative and flexible MQB platform – which also underpins the class-leading Volkswagen Golf – the new car signals the start of a comprehensive SUV offensive which will see the brand represented in all core SUV segments over time. By virtue of its cutting edge MQB underpinnings, the new Tiguan debuts exceptional levels of safety and connectivity. Standard from entry will be a raft of valuable safety features such as Front Assist; City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, while hi-tech features available for the first time in a Tiguan include Active Info Display; Head-Up Display; Area View and Trailer Assist. With a 33mm reduction in height versus the outgoing car to 1,632mm, and a 30mm growth in width to 1,839mm, new Tiguan exhibits an even more sleek, confident shape. At 4,486mm in length it is also 60mm longer than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been significantly extended to 2,681mm – a gain of 77 mm. At the front, in particular, the unit formed by the radiator grille and optional LED projection headlights reinforces the car’s powerful impression and upright stance. The SUV design language is taken up consistently inside new Tiguan, too. The cockpit, for example, is now aligned towards the driver for better comfort and without constricting the airy impression of the interior. At the same time, the wider centre console typical of SUVs is paired with the new 4MOTION Active Control rotary switch to create a defining

interior element with a premium feel. Ambient lighting generates a sophisticated overall impression, completed by the optional panoramic roof – standard from SEL trim upwards – and details such as the elegant door handles and smart trim strips. This generously-proportioned interior offers more head room and knee room than previously – up by 29mm in the case of knee room – and when the rear bench is folded the cargo space, at 1,655 litres, is 145 litres larger than before. The car also offers a sliding rear bench seat that has been optimised to permit up to 180 mm of adjustment. When the rear bench is slid forwards, the boot provides 615 litres of space – a gain of 145 litres. Highlighting the new Volkswagen’s practicality is a towing capacity of up to 2,500kg (depending on model and drivetrain) which is unique in this class of compact SUVs. The extended engine range of the new Tiguan gives customers the greatest possible range of choices for power, style and comfort. In the UK the car will over time be offered with up to three new petrol engines, with power outputs from 125 PS to 180 PS, and four new diesel engines ranging from 115 PS to 240 PS. All EU6-compliant, they are more powerful and more fuel-efficient than the comparable EU5 engines of the previous model. The diesel engines feature SCR catalytic converter technology, using the now familiar AdBlue additive. As order books open, the high-volume diesel will be available as a 2.0 TDI 150 PS with 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG)

or six-speed manual transmission; or with front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox. In addition the 2.0 TSI with 180 PS, 4MOTION and DSG is also on offer from now. Extended engine, drive and gearbox options will be available in two further order waves, which open in the UK on 5 May and 2 June. The first wave of engines in the UK offer 0-62 mph times of between 7.7 seconds (2.0 TSI 180 PS) to 9.3 seconds (2.0 TDI 150 PS), with top speeds ranging from 129mph to 124mph. For the first wave of engines, CO2 emissions are calculated at between 125g/km (2.0 TDI 150 PS front-wheel drive with sixspeed manual gearbox), to 170g/km (2.0 TSI 180 PS 4MOTION with sevenspeed DSG). The safety equipment roster also includes a network of seven airbags – including a knee airbag on the driver’s side. The new Tiguan, like all Volkswagen cars based on the MQB platform, also comes with the automatic post-collision braking system which helps to avoid dangerous secondary collisions. This Month with Kate Justice

Cross Country To ‘Badders’ In equestrian sport, says Kate Justice, the month of May sees one of the most important and famous competitions in the world. And it’s right here – in the middle of the Cotswolds The Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials (#MMBHT)

Even if you’ve never even seen a horse, you’ve probably heard of it. Most experts consider the Mitsubishi Trophy to be the most prestigious prize in Three Day Eventing... and the cross country course at The Duke of Beaufort’s Estate, one of the toughest there is. Without question, only the most elite athletes – both equine and human – will qualify... and only the very best of them will make it round. When people from all over the world come to Gloucestershire to compete – and to spectate – we have every right to feel a little smug about being practically able to walk there. Sport aside, the shopping and catering are also, for many, reason enough on their own, to attend. The ‘village’ that springs up from nowhere (the location is pretty much, simply a field for the rest of the year) is a spectacle – and if you like horses, or country life, or... well... shopping / eating / drinking... then you we will be WELL catered for. 2016 is particularly poignant for more than one reason. An Olympic year, always manages to add another layer of excitement to any sport that is also an Olympic Discipline. But one thing that stands out for all the competitors, organisers and volunteers, perhaps more than anything else is the loyal and gratifyingly beneficial relationship with Mitsubishi. Also a Gloucestershire based company, the car manufacturer that has a particularly large fan base in the equestrian world has now been in partnership with Badminton Horse Trials for 25 years. This sort of milestone will be celebrated in various different ways, but the one I love the most is Fence 25 on the cross country course. This year, it’s at the lake – which as is traditional, features two Mitsubishi L200 Pick Ups. For many years, this obstacle has been near the halfway point and the pick ups have been red. 122 MAY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

Appropriately, in this 25th year, they are silver... and – being fence 25 – nearer the end of the cross-country test. The Italian course designer, Giuseppe della Chiesa and his team, were faced with an interesting conundrum to put this in place but as you will see, they did it; with some careful numbering and a slight re-route. Another nail biting element to Badminton is the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing. Three Equestrian Majors; Kentucky USA, Badminton UK and Burghley UK, which if won back to back by the same rider, carry a £250,000 prize. It has only ever been achieved once before, by Pippa Funnell in 2003. This year, it could well be done again... we may get to see sporting history unfold in Gloucestershire. At the time of writing, Germany’s

Michael Jung, the current Olympic Champion, is the ‘Live Contender’ for the Rolex Grand Slam, having won Burghley last September. Kentucky is the next stage – only a week before Badminton and he is one of the favourites to win that. If he does, all eyes will be on him at ‘Badders’. And if he wins that too, it will, I feel, be drinks on him! The Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials runs at the Duke of Beaufort’s Estate, Gloucestershire from Wednesday 4th May to Sunday 8th May 2016.
