UNE... Oh, I have been waiting for this month for such a long time. Why? Well, firstly it is the month that I am getting married – YAY! Secondly, June marks the onset of summer; lazy afternoons spent in the sun, relaxing with a Pimms and Lemonade while the aromas of the BBQ fills the air. Just delicious. Summer is, quite frankly, my favourite time of year. With this in mind, we felt it rather fitting for us to embrace a ‘Summer Lovin’ feature (page 80). We have pages of wedding inspiration and key suppliers for all you brides and grooms-to-be, who will be perfect for your day. We even have a step-by-step bridal hair tutorial (page 86) by Cotswolds bridal hair & make-up stylist extraordinaire, Heidi Sykes. At Style, we are delighted to offer you an exclusive competition with Photography By Stefanie. You can win a photography package worth £1500. All you have to do is email us with your proposal story to be in with a chance of winning. Take a look at the competition next to me Editor’s foreward for more details. Gorgeous Gardens is our area of focus in our interiors section. Read Rachel Vincent’s feature (page 45) that shows us how by simply adding a range of accessories, our outdoor areas can be transformed into seriously stylish living spaces. I particularly like the silver moon garden lanterns – so very pretty! Do take a look at Rachel Tozza’s article (page 52), which takes us through the keyhole of celebrity supermodel, Elle McPherson’s lakeside home. Why not take a stroll around The Suffolks in Cheltenham, especially on a Saturday afternoon where you can potter around a range of boutique shops and perhaps meet with friends for brunch. Join us as we take a closer look at The Suffolks (page 36) and find out about the independent boutiques and cafes that fill this glorious quarter of Cheltenham. Have a glorious June, filled with sunshine (well, hopefully...) and see you in July.

YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY! Courtesy of www.photography bystefanie.co.uk Simply email editor@stylemagazines.co.uk and the winner will be the couple who the Cotswold Style team and Stefanie feel are most deserving! Good luck and we can’t wait to hear your story!

Planned for

PERFECTION We speak to multi-award winning luxury wedding and event planner, Jane Riddell WORDS BY BETH MAHONEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIKKI KIRK PHOTOGRAPHY

Jane Riddle is one of the country’s most prestigious wedding planners. Three years ago Jane left her job in hotel management and embarked on a incredible, new career journey as a wedding and event planner; “I always loved the wedding and events element of the job and so decided to set up my own Wedding & Event Management company, Planned For Perfection.” Jane’s unique flare for weddings has meant that over the past three years she has been nominated numerous times at The Wedding Industry Awards and as one of the UK’s top wedding planners: “The awards are voted for by past Planned For Perfection couples, which reinforces that the work we do on a daily basis is loved by all of our clients, especially since they have taken time out of their busy schedules to vote for us.” Providing a professional, experienced and friendly approach to wedding planning, Planned for Perfection offers a variety of services that are specifically designed to suit each couple’s individuality. Jane offers a variety of tailored packages including: full planning and design, partial planning and on the day event management. By offering clients the opportunity to discover and develop their dream wedding day visions, Jane works alongside each couple and delivers a practical, imaginative and experienced service, ensuring that bride and groomsto-be can enjoy every second of their wedding planning experience. Couples are all given complete guidance throughout the planning, ensuring that they have a first class experience with Planned For Perfection. Jane was lucky enough to get the chance to do a spot of traveling and fly to Sydney for a wedding. Jane explained

that it has been one of the most exciting highlights of having her own business so far; “After nurturing a relationship with couples and working hard to create their perfect day, the individuality of each wedding means that every event is exciting – however, flying to Sydney last year for a wedding was rather more exciting than usual!” Although each wedding is special to her and her team, Jane says that she would love to have planned Prince William’s and Kate’s wedding, due to the timeless elegance of the event that will most probably be admired for many years. Although she may have missed out on planning the royal nuptials, Jane says, “Prince Harry is still to marry and George Clooney has just announced his engagement...” Now, that would be a fabulous wedding to plan! Jane notes that regardless of a couple’s wedding budget, their approach to the day remains the same: “I've been lucky enough to plan weddings for couples who have had a limitless budget and the approach to the day is exactly the same

as all weddings – obviously a limitless budget means that couples can generally have whatever they would like, but this doesn’t change our approach to the day.”Of course, many brides are not always fortunate to have a limitless budget, therefore Jane offers key advice:“You need to be honest with yourselves as to your budget and work out what is most important to you - if you want to use a big chunk of the budget on something specific, then be aware that this may mean you have to compromise on otherthings. Be realistic and stick to it – whatever the budget, there is no what so ever that you can’t have a beautiful and memorable day.” As a leading business for luxury weddings and events, Planned For Perfection has grown dramatically over the past three years and are now recognised both locally and nationally as one of the best wedding and events businesses in the UK. Jane notes; “A lot of my business comes from word of mouth as my reputation locally and nationally as a leading luxury wedding and event planner has grown and a majority of my couples have seen me ‘in action’ at friends or family weddings”. Jane explains how she and her team hope that the future of Planned for Perfection is bright, with the business continuing to flourish and continue to be recognised as one of the best wedding planning companies in the UK: “I hope that Planned For Perfection continues to flourish and be recognised as one of the best wedding planning companies in the UK.” www.plannedforperfection.co.uk

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS We speak to Nick Griffith, of Nick Griffith Estate Agents, about their first weeks in business… Tell us a bit of background about Nick Griffith Estate Agents; when did you open, why Cheltenham? Nick Griffith Estate Agents opened at the beginning of April this year. Previously I had been working with a well-known estate agents in Cheltenham for 15 years and it had always been my ambition to, one day, run my own estate agency in Cheltenham. What services do you offer your customers, can you assist them through the entire process of buying a home? My intention is to provide a first class service working closely with each client from the point of valuation through to handing over the keys on completion. Clients will be treated as individuals with their own unique set of requests and requirements, as such I have the flexibility and experience to tailor the service I provide to suit accordingly. How many houses do you currently have on your portfolio? We currently have 18 properties, £595,000 4 bedroom period townhouse, Hewlett Road, Cheltenham

£475,000, 2 bedroom apartment, The Broadwalk, Cheltenham

either on the market or under offer, with more in the pipeline. This far exceeds our expectations after 6 weeks in business. Have you noticed a particular demand for specific properties? With current market conditions we have experienced high demand across the breadth of the market, with 4 of our sales agreed at the full asking price to the first viewer!

How can you make the process of selling a property that bit less daunting? Constant communication, honesty and simplicity are all key to ensuring expectations are managed and everyone understands what’s happening at each stage of the process. I will be there every step of the way, using my knowledge and experience to keep everything on track and remain calm in those nail biting moments. How can those looking to buy or sell houses get in touch with you? We can be contacted is the usual ways, phone, email and via our website (please see below for details). Also, we will soon be on twitter with property updates and other snippets we think you might find interesting. 27/05/2014

Page 36

A Personal Approach Beth Mahoney catches up with ESTAS Award winner, Michelle Cook of Cook Residential, Cheltenham Q: When did Cook Residential first open? A: Initially Cook Residential was registered in June 2012, but we did not start trading until three months later in September 2012.

Q: What was the inspiration behind opening your own property business? A: It’s a very sad story but when my father passed away I was left some inheritance. He always wanted me to set up my own estate agency and as he and my mother were both very focused on business and driving it forward, I decided to use the money to open Cook Residential. For me the business is very sentimental; and I’ve been lucky enough to receive a lot of support and input from my mother. Along with my father inspiring me, I have also used over 13 years of property experience. Q: As one of many Cheltenham based property businesses, what do you think sets your business apart from others that are similar? A: At Cook Residential we use many marketing strategies and our approach is very different to that of our competition. All estate agents offer a service but we like to deal with people as people, rather than as a transactional number, we always use the personal

gardening service. We also offer a unique out of hours service where each of our team members has their own personal mobile phone number so they can be contacted on at any time.

approach. We also offer help and support as well as the end goal of selling their house, we like to reduce stress where possible.

Q: Can you tell us about the other services aside from property sales that you offer? A: As well as offering property sales, we also offer solicitor referrals, financial service referrals and removal referrals with many more helpful services coming very soon. We also offer a range of stress relieving services for moving, including a packing service, professional cleaning service, and a

Q: Congratulations on your recent award can you tell us more about it and how this has contributed to your development? A: At Cook Residential we pride ourselves on providing our customers with top quality customer service, which has, and always will be, one of our top priorities. The ESTAS Award is all about customer service, with a selection of questionnaires completed online by our buyers and sellers and was completely anonymous until after the awards. The ESTAS Award is a true representation of our company standards that are on offer, and thus has had a huge impact on the business, enabling us to be able to give the public the truth about how good our customer service really is. Q: Can you tell us where the award ceremony was held and who it was hosted by? A: The award ceremony was held on the 9th May in London’s beautiful Hilton Park Hotel and was hosted by Channel 4’s Phil Spencer. It really was a fantastic event, with over 700 estate agents from across the country in attendance and a range of professional talks and speeches giving inspiration and motivation.

Q: What has been the most satisfying sale you have made? A: Every sale is satisfying simply because we are helping the public through what can be, an incredibly stressful time. Sometimes we have excited first time buyers and other times we have much sadder situations where it is a deceased sale, which is always an emotional and incredibly hard time for family members involved. 36 JUNE 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

Interview

“The Esther’s Award is a true representation of our company standards that are on offer, and thus has had a huge impact on the business, enabling us to be able to give the public the truth about how good our customer service really is.” Q: Have you found that the use of social media as digital marketing has helped with your presence in the market? A: We have found social media to be incredibly helpful, we have had situations where properties have sold through our Facebook page, and what with social media being such a huge feature in society these days, it is something we have a large focus on. Especially as over 80 per cent (based on April’s figures) of our business is generated via recommendation which is becoming huge via social media. Q: You have flexible opening hours, have you found this to prove invaluable to the service you offer? A: To us, having flexible hours really has proved invaluable as at Cook Residential we are trying to be more adaptable to the public needs and when the majority of people are working from 8.30am until 6pm, it is sometimes hard for them to pop in and see us or view properties. It’s

incredible how much business we generate from being open outside the generic opening hours of the working day, as well as being open all weekend – Saturdays and Sundays. It also enables us to contact clients at a time that is suitable for them, for things such as generating feedback, which is incredibly important.

Q: You have a wide range of properties available; why did you decide not to focus on a certain aspect of the market? i.e. £million plus homes, especially in Cheltenham... A: Although we work with a wide range of properties, taking on anything from a garage at 10,000 GBP to a beautiful, opulent property that is currently on sale a 3 million GBP, we are selective in terms of what we will take to the market. We only work with a maximum amount of stock so we can ensure that we are focusing on each individual property, having a wide client base also

allows us to ensure that no opportunity is missed for a potential buyer.

Q: What is the future for Cook Residential? A: There are currently many things bubbling in the background of Cook Residential at the moment, and as mentioned previously, customer service is one of our top priorities. What we are aiming to do is to continue to grow our market share and to potentially look at other opportunities within the industry. As a company we also feel that we have grown very quickly, from in January 2013 having just one team member, to the current time having seven team members, and we are always looking at ways to move forward, with the potential to expand again in the near future, allowing us to grow our market share. GLAMOUR

So you’re sitting comfortably and you’re nice and warm, however, the one element that you’re not sure you have got just right is the lighting. How can you create the perfect ambiance, like you can inside your home? You are not alone, this happens to even the most organised of us. Let’s be honest, who wants to sit in the glare of a security light which casts a bizarre orange hue over the faces of your guests; so work on getting atmospheric lighting sources in place. I adore lanterns for a touch of instant garden glamour and there is such a wide variety available on the high street and online, see a selection from www.notonthehighstreet.com. A range of fabulous lanterns and outdoor lights, including these enormously fun and funky solar powered balls that can be placed around the garden or simply in a large glass bowl on the table are sure to be a talking point. So, whether you’re simply jazzing up your outside space or doing a complete re-design try and satisfy your physical needs – somewhere to sit comfortably, feel peaceful and relaxed and hopefully nature will take care of the rest. Enjoy your summer…

PASSIONATE ABOUT PEONIES! Our Cheltenham horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith is currently working as Assistant Producer on the BBC’s Great British Garden Revival. Here she takes a break from the modernity of TV production to celebrate an old fashioned favourite……. Anyone who has experienced the sheer beauty of the Somerset based Kelways stand at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show will have no doubt that the peony is certainly a summer VIP (very important plant). With thousands of years of rich history, this is one elderly lady who is the epitome of old fashioned border elegance. Much celebrated in China and Japan, this plant was even noted to be placed under Imperial protection on occasion and it’s not hard to see why. Who wouldn’t want to wrap those huge powder puffs of perfection in virtual cotton wool? Herbaceous peonies which die down over winter are probably the most wellknown amongst gardeners, although tree peonies with woody stems are also available. Spetchley Park in nearby Worcestershire holds a collection of around 350 named forms of peony and is well worth a visit. The lady of the house, Rose Berkeley, was a keen collector and some peonies in the gardens date back to the early 1900s, including one of the oldest in the collection, the tree peony: Paeonia x suffruticosa. ‘Avant Guard’ is another beautiful old specimen on display, this one a herbaceous example with flowers of shell pink. The Berkeley family continue the collection to this day with John and son Henry both being passionate about peonies! Often perceived to be somewhat tricky to grow, the menu of choice for your herbaceous peony is full sun, good drainage and an occasional snack of mulch around the crown of the plant.

Don’t plant too deeply and if possible try not to disturb them as they can be a little resistant to change. If you must move established plants, best to wait until autumn and treat with care! I don’t think I’m alone in my love of ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ – bred in 1906 by Victor Lemoine and one of many of the romantic French lactiflora hybrids of that period. Double petal explosions of innocence, so pretty, so perfect and fantastic in a vase. For a stronger stemin the garden though and particularly long lasting blooms, ‘Dinner plate’ is a more recent introduction which may appeal. For a burst of crimson, you can’t go wrong with the traditional old fashioned red cottage peony: officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ – one I remember well from my childhood. You can get single forms of peony, but I’ve always preferred double Gloucester to single cheese and the same with my peonies!

In ancient times many parts of the flowers were used in medicine and its name is said to come from a physician to the Gods, Paeon, who angered the God of medicine and healing. To save him from a jealousy enraged ordered death, Zeus stepped in and changed him into the beautiful peony flower. (Better than death obviously but still somewhat limiting and life changing)! Peonies are pretty romantic and in addition to representing the 12th wedding anniversary, they are now a popular wedding flower. The array of pastels from the lightest blush of pink to delicious sorbet lemons shouts (or rather politely comments) delicate sophistication for your perfect day. June is the peak month in the UK for the herbaceous types that lend themselves so well to the bouquet formation. For later blooms, growers in Alaska are offering the chance to enjoy these flowers throughout the summer. So popular is the demand, that the Alaskan peony industry is growing by the minute, they even have their own Peony Growers Association. Locals are planting up roots by the hundreds with the aim of bringing fortune their way. Who needs a pension when you have peonies?! I think you'll find it hard to grow a more glamorous, showstopper of a flower this summer. A performance that Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn would be proud of. COTSWOLD STYLE JUNE 2014 51

The Industrial Home Interior designer, Kelly James, tells us how industrial style can work in our homes... PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOWPLAY MEDIA

The industrial style has become very popular in bars, restaurants and coffee shops over recent years. There is no reason why we can’t apply this look to our homes. Using industrial surfaces such as concrete, metal and brick can look stunning in the home. The key is to get the right balance! We don’t want our homes to be too stark and cold but more welcoming and comfortable. By adding fabrics, a pop of colour or a collection of family photographs these can soften the assumption of a bare and practical space to a room you enjoy.

• Use natural materials such as scaffold planks • Have open shelves to display crockery

Simple ways to add industrial touches are to:

Think raw, think exposed, think industrial…

• Add industrial style lighting by exposing conduit, looping coloured flex or choosing over sized metal pendants

To discuss your interior design project contact Kelly James at Shadowplay Design on 01242 253700

This look is great to blend with other styles such as vintage, ethnic or classic pieces of furniture. It’s also a style that can evolve over time. Keep your eyes peeled for industrial finds at car boot sales or in skips if you are working on a budget or buy from companies that sell reclaimed products like original gymnasium flooring or salvage lighting. There are also lots of companies that sell new industrial style products.

A MODEL HOME Imagine combining the creative forces of award winning luxury developers The Raven Group, a world class team of leading designers headed by Philippe Starck, and the top international model, designer & entrepreneur Elle Macpherson... WORDS BY RACHEL TOZZA PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEL YATES

Welcome to 'Dock House'. The property is owned by Elle Macpherson and with 5 bedrooms spread across 3 storeys, the waterfront family hide-away (complete with a jetty, may I add!) is positioned at 'The Lakes By You'; the 650 acre estate in rural Gloucestershire. Elle says, “I have always loved the Cotswolds. The beautiful towns, countryside and intimate setting,”she muses. So what was it, when pitched against the idyllic aesthetic of the pretty stone Cotswold cottages, so abundant in the area that finally drew Elle to set up home in this ultra contemporary abode? “The Dock House won me round with the architecture and provision for environmental sustainability” explains Macpherson. Each home on the estate is built to be energy & water efficient, plus the ‘green credentials’ include Biomass heating, eco-cooling and rainwater harvesting. The flat roofed, Russian larch clad, what are essentially architectural ‘cubes’ are then each built & finished to the owner’s specification and therefore despite the somewhat uniform exteriors, the interiors are actually far from formulaic. With the majestic water views from her home, it is impossible not to be inspired by the natural surroundings. “When contemplating my home at the lakes” says Elle, “I sought to express my style whilst respecting the environment. Texture and tone are important to me and this combination of natural materials and the pure architecture of the house inspired me in design.” As a showcase for Elle’s interior design skills, she decided to take a playful approach to the look of her new home. 54 JUNE 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

As an advocate of sourcing local materials wherever possible, Elle made carefully considered statements when it came to decorating The Dock House. Rough reclaimed barn timbers & refined textured linen wallpaper line the interior walls. The palette is earthy and muted throughout - blues, greys and pistachio greens echo the colours reflected in the serene lake views. Floorto-ceiling windows allow light to flood into every space. The snug is dominated by a stunning modular sofa by Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois, which anchors the colour scheme for Elle’s home. She finished this cosy space with a huge sumptuous, grey sheepskin rug that simply beckons bare feet! Soaking up the spectacular vista is an open plan kitchen, dining and sitting area. Elle describes this as ‘the heart of her home’ and she adores the large wood-burning stove that warms the entire space during the cooler months. The expanse of glazing opens onto a large decked area that extends out over

the lake connecting her home to the breathtaking outdoor surroundings. The Master Suite runs the length and breadth of the house and occupies the whole of the top floor. Elle admits this is her favourite part of the house. It includes a private bathroom, complete with freestanding bathtub and ‘His’ & ‘Hers’ vanity, a walk-in dressing room and even a steam room - for the ultimate in luxury. Again, floor-to-ceiling windows open up to access the timber decked terrace, where lounging on the 4 poster day bed, is the perfect way to take in the incredible views! Elle concludes: “I believe the house reflects my tastes, lifestyle and most importantly compliments the surrounding nature. Design is a huge part of my life, and I have really enjoyed channelling my spirit into this home.” When Elle Mcpherson isn’t at home at The Dock House, she makes it available for rent. Interview

“I ignored all advice not to work with animals...

I’M SO GLAD I DID” Natalie Letch finds out more about The Good Life when meeting with Mandy Hall... Mandy Hall and Natalie Letch

Mandy to take time out with Lola. They would frequent Cotswold Farm Park and Mandy soon fell in love with it. Smiling as she recounts her first experience of the farm she says; “I felt immediately at home here, there’s a real connection that I have with the farm. I soon spotted an advert for a job at the park. Having owned horses, I’ve always had a love for the countryside and always wanted to get back to it, but never really knew how – I never thought it could be my job”. What seemed like fate, Mandy applied for the job. Arriving for the interview, the manager instantly recognised her and said, “Oh, it’s you, well I don’t really need to tell you anything, do I?”. As you can probably sumise, Mandy was offered the job right there on the spot as he knew how passionate she was about the farm; an obvious and essential aspect of the job. The flexibility and lifestyle with the farm has meant that Mandy is doing what we would all hope for; following and embracing her vocation. Mandy fondly recounts, “The farm has been so supportive – it’s just like my home, a part

PHOTO: ROB WHEATMAN

Sometimes you get the opportunity to revert back to childhood. I did just this when I was invited to Cotswold Farm Park to meet with Mandy Hall and of course, its furry residents! What I did underestimate was just how much I would enjoy my afternoon with Mandy and that it would be love at first sight with a special someone; Herbert, the baby goat who you were introduced to in our last issue. I will get back to him shortly... So, why am I writing Mandy’s article this month? Well, we thought it would be a good opportunity to get to know Mandy on another level; find out what her background is and how she came to fall into her dream job. After embarking on a grand tour of the farm, which was wonderful; I fed goats, donkeys, held baby ducklings and rabbits and most exciting of all, I had a cuddle with the baby goat, Herbert! If you may think this is only fun for children, then you are mistaken. We agreed that he is not your average goat, he would be quite happy cuddling on your sofa to a movie - you don’t believe me? Go and meet him and you will see what I mean. I could easily have ‘kid’-napped him (see what I did there?) Ok, moving on... Mandy has a sucessful background in property but once she became a mother, things were quite different; “I did 10 years in property; my ex-fiancé was a property developer and I started running over 40 student houses and then moved into residential. When I was doing it full-time, I absolutely loved it; I knew all of the properties and could match it all really well. After Lola was born I returned to work and it just seemed different and very stressful. Now I had a child, things had changed and what I wanted from life was different”. Reaching this crossroads in her life led

of my family – my farm family, if you like”. The work/life balance is perfect and has extended into all aspects of her life; “I’ve turned this job into my career and I make the most of any opportunity given; with animals, radio, the show. I love it so much and I just want to tell everybody about it. It’s amazing”. Mandy has a thirst for knowledge and has fully embraced the lifestyle associated with her role at the farm; “I’d love to move out here one day, increase my days, do more shows, The Feastival, school visits. What is lucky is that I can develop my role as much as I want too – there’s so much more I want to know.” What would Mandy’s advice be to anyone reaching a crossroads in their career? “You have to do what you love and what makes you happy. I know how lucky I am being here; there’s nothing else in the world that I would rather do. That’s how it’s should be”. The Cotswold Farm Park is open every day from 10.30am. MAKE UP You’ll want to keep your make up easy to maintain and fuss free. Start off with a tinted moisturiser with added SPF, add a flick of eyeliner and enhance that pout with a moisturising lipbalm. Maybelline Baby Lips (£2.99) offer 8 hours of hydration and come in a variety of pretty shades and yummy scents.

Festival fun also means that you’re going to be up late. But shhh, no one needs to know with this new secret weapon. The NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (£22) is one of my favourites, as its brightening effect is sure to disguise any signs of the night before. Gently pat it on the dark areas of the under eye and you’re ready to start the day. And how to ensure all your hard work doesn’t budge? A spritz of Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray (£9) should do the trick. It even comes in a handy travel size bottle so won’t take up much of your precious luggage space. HAIRCARE Dry shampoo is sure to become your new best friend during a weekend of dancing and stuffy tents. When showers aren’t so readily available, use some Batiste Dry Shampoo (£2.99) to instantly revive the hair, banish oil and boost body. And they even come in a lovely floral scent so you can feel perfectly refreshed. To apply, massage the product into the roots of the hair to give extra lift and volume. Rock the festival look and make a statement with some vibrant hair chalks from The Body Shop (£5).

These bright colours are right on trend, and super easy to use. Simply run the chalks towards the end of the hair for that dip dye effect. And the great thing is they’re only temporary so if you’re back in the office on the Monday, no one will know after you’ve washed it out.

Sexy Summer Hair Here are some top tips to transform you into a summer goddess from the experts at Laura Leigh hairdressing The Spring / Summer catwalks were a hub of hot new hair trends. Working tirelessly to bring you the coolest of the cool new looks, the Laura Leigh team collaborated with Loreal professionnel to identify the key hair trends for the upcoming season straight from the catwalk. This summer the key trend is all about soft, sexy and dishevelled looks. Laura Leigh hairdressing has a unique range of styling products designed to unleash your wilder side. Imagine tousled, undisciplined, dishevelled texture & body. The Laura Leigh team will be offering soft wearable looks that will be easy to maintain.

Laura recommends the best summer suitcase essentials to take away Bain Apres Soleil, £17 • Eliminates build-up of protection products, sand, salt and chlorine present on the scalp and hair. • Reconstitutes fibre structure and surface. • Hair has longlasting softness, suppleness and smoothness. • Long-lasting colour radiance.

The hottest colour trend this summer will be bronde... (Brown + blonde) Traditionally, they have always existed in two very separate camps. On the one side, women who favour rich, sophisticated brunette tones in their hair and on the other, blondes who prefer a lighter, brighter colour result. Indeed, both can be beautiful and throughout their lifetime, many women will find themselves switching shades. But this summer’s trend for “bronde” means that you are no longer forced to choose between the two. The clue is in the name: a fusion of brown and blonde, to create a flattering, sun-kissed colour result. “Bronde” is in fact a complete beauty trend that goes beyond hair

colour since it reduces the contrast between hair and skin tone, to create shade harmony. As a result, this colour effect is best suited to warmer, darker skin types to enhance their natural colouring and it can be very complimentary on more mature women too. With “bronde”, blondes can enjoy an elegant colour result with added depth, while brunettes have their look lifted and illuminated without going platinum!

SUMMER IS HERE! Ah summer, the season we all long for. We wait months, 9 of them in fact, for this time of year to come back around and, we may all have our reasons, surely there is only one thing that makes the laborious wait bearable? The style! THE MALDIVES THE ULTIMATE ROMANTIC ISLAND HIDEAWAY

What is more thrilling and romantic than the sun, sea and sand of one ofthe world’s most remote and extraordinary natural aquariums. The sparkling jewels of the Maldives are the ultimate destination for rejuvenating the soul and celebrating something very special. Perfect white sand beaches are lapped by the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. With a lifelong love of the ocean I have been blessed to experience many an exotic island hideaway with beautiful beaches. However, I was yet to discover the perfect tropical island of my childhood drawings of high white sand beaches with palms atop – until my visit to the Maldives. Close to Mother Nature with sun, sea and sand to play in, fruit and fish galore to eat and sparkling people to meet. The cherry on the top is that each isolated island sanctuary is bejewelled by exquisite coral reefs and the most exotic of marine life. Each island hideaway is luxurious, unique and enchanting in its own style and boasts turquoise wavelets lapping the white sand beaches. Each has a ‘House Reef ’ with every imaginable colour of tropical fish waiting to be marvelled at, tropical skies, the harmonious rustle of palms and the most delicious gourmet Maldivian food. However, the degrees of luxury and atmosphere are very different on each paradise island! Our first atoll visit was to Kuredu Island Resort and Spa, a 40 minute float plane transfer North from Male, the ‘Island Kingdom’ gateway, to the Lhaviyani Atoll famed for its exquisite marine life. We were welcomed aboard our sea plane by a bare-foot Captain and his crew! After an exciting skate across the waves the plane nimbly took to the air and offered fabulous views over the Indian Ocean, submerged ring reefs (faroes), islands and lagoons all winking at us like a tie-die patterned piece of fabric in every blue describable billowing 82 JUNE 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

Self-professed adventuress Lucy Garbutt is left longing to return to paradise following a recent trip to the pristine Maldives with its gin clear turquoise water, azure skies, caster-sugar white sand of the softest talcum powder and palm trees stretching proudly atop each perfect tropical island

in the breeze. The Maldives have been described as a ‘garland of islands’ and you can understand why as you see some of them from the sea plane. In total there are twenty six coral atolls in a double chain that reach down and touch the equator. Kuredu came into view perched atop Lhaviyani Atoll with the far reaching ocean to the North and the tranquillity of the inner atoll ocean in the South. Our delightful hosts encouraged us to remove our shoes to feel the fine white sand beneath our feet – welcome to barefoot luxury! Kuredu boasts stupendously luxurious villas on the beach surrounded by swaying palms, kani trees and exotic tropical

vegetation and the very finest pure white sand and crystal clear warm lagoon. We enjoyed the adventure of a snorkelling excursion by speedboat to a reef known as ‘The Wall’ a 20 minute journey further north. Our expert guide kept us safe in the strong current and we enjoyed a thrilling drift snorkel marvelling at the incredible coral and marine life below. Either lots, or absolutely nothing to do! Utter heaven. Our first experience of Baros was one of luxury as soon as we boarded the ‘house’ speedboat and its fine taupe coloured livery and matching Boat Butlers! We sped across the ocean for a 20 minute transfer to Baros – a perfect tiny island paradise of high white sand beaches and dense tropical rainforest surrounded by an immaculately planted tropical paradise. Contemporary, chic and incredibly luxurious, we experienced the uniqueness of staying in a Water Villa. The thrill and joy of being surrounded by ocean were sensational Baros has a resident Marine Biologist with a commitment to replanting coral. Children can join in with this activity and track the success of their coral once home. The house-reef at Baros has superb corals – it is healthy and colourful with a vibrant fish population. The resident turtle was quite happy for us to join him on a hunting trip around the corals and a shoal of ten or more Eagle Rays circled for almost half an hour feeding in one area of the reef while we hovered overhead in wonderment. On several occasions we passed them gliding up and down the coral wall. Numerous black-tipped reef shark continuously cruised the reef ignoring our presence entirely. A sea plane transfer, South this time to Filitheyo, again with spectacular views over mesmerisingly beautiful atolls. The plane touched down skimming the ocean as we chased scores of frolicking dolphins. We were seemingly in the middle of the open ocean with barely

an island in view, and only the two of us off-loaded onto a tiny bobbing jetty with a small wooden sign announcing ‘Filitheyo International Airport’. The island beyond looked uninhabited – from this distance all that could be seen were high white beaches and tropical canopy – not a building in sight! The gentle buzz of a Dhoni’s engine announced our rescue, heralding the essence of this island – relaxed & laid-back. No pomp, ceremony or pretentions – simple rustic charms and the pure natural beauty of the Maldives in all its glory. Setting foot on the island we were ushered off at an amble through the ancient palms and a tropical paradise along winding sandy paths, past a tiny Maldivian lady gently sweeping the sand with a handful of sticks and to our enchanting villa with the lapping ocean waves a few paces away. Barefoot rustic! Dress code: bikini and sarong! Filitheyo attracts many divers due to the superior reef in this part of the archipelago. Filitheyo’s ‘House Reef ’ wraps around the island like a bejewelled cape and is extensive, spectacular & pristine with a plethora of fish of every shape, colour and size. Snorkelling makes for an exciting adventure as different species present themselves on each outing. Chilling under palms outside our villa it is high-tide and the sand spit beyond the reef has disappeared from view.

Thousands of tiny glittering fish shimmer across the surface like a fan of diamonds chased by larger dark fish skimming the surface. Wavelets of shining, peaked, whipped egg whites chase the caster sugar sand glittering in the sunlight and then spills up sinking our loungers deep into the sand and sending the scuttling hermit crabs into their shells. The coconut man is doing his rounds bringing fresh coconut milk to sunbathers, his strong rough hands working his machete as he deftly chops top and bottom for guests to drink straight from the husk. Like all Maldivian food Filitheyo’s is top notch. The chef combines fresh ingredients from Sri Lanka and locally caught fish to create some delicious local cuisine such as exquisite curries, exotic salads, delicious sea-food – all freshly prepared and mostly cooked to your exact taste before your eyes. This is a definite must experience, several times in a lifetime destination and as they say ‘life’s no dress rehearsal’! BOHO BRIDAL BRAID Create a relaxed bridal summer side braid with a tutorial by Heidi Vince 1. Firstly make sure all your hair is thoroughly brushed.

2. Make your parting on the side your hair naturally falls. 3. Start on the side with the least hair and take a triangle section from the parting to the top of the ear and split into 3 equal sections.

4. Now take the section which is closest to the back of your head and pass it over the middle section and under the section next to your face, now take the section next to your face and pass it under section 2 and over section 3, When passing hair from the back add a small section to the hair and continue to braid, now take a small section from the bottom of your head and add to the

next section of hair. Continue adding hair from both top and bottom following your head shape. (The bigger the section of hair your adding the quicker you will get to the bottom so your arms won’t ache for as long). Once at the side drop your arms down slightly so the hair starts to fall downwards. Once all the hair has been added continue to plait until you have no more hair to plait and tie a band around the ends. 5. This is a great relaxed summer style, now to take it to a more dressy style roll the ends around your fingers and coil the hair back up towards your ear, once happy with the position pin your hair into place add hairspray to secure and enjoy the evening.

Food&Drink

Summer Loving This month food writer, Shelle Duffin, tantilises our tastebuds with the fruit of the summer...

Recipe file

June has to be one of my favourite months of the year for many reasons: it means Christmas is only another six months away, it’s my birthday, so I get some lovely presents to keep me going until Santa makes his next debut, but most importantly of all, (being a food lover), there are some delicious ingredients back in season. This month, we see the return of

the strawberry – one of my favourite fruits. As children, on visits to our grandparents, in order to avoid the tedious grown-up chit-chat, my sisters and I would often hide away in Grandpa’s strawberry patch, only to be discovered hours later redder than red and bellies filled to the brim with these delicious fruits. One of my cherished childhood memories involves spending many glorious afternoons during the

summer holidays out strawberry picking at the local ‘pick your own’. As a result, my recipe this month, for me, represents the taste of summer. An elegant showstopper dessert at an alfresco themed dinner party or an act of pure indulgence following a sumptuous barbecue with family and friends, this vibrant centrepiece will always go down a treat.

Strawberry & Elderflower Cheesecake Serves 8 INGREDIENTS For the base 300g digestive biscuits 100g unsalted butter, melted For the filling 300g full-fat soft cheese 300ml double cream 100g golden caster sugar 300g strawberries (extra for decoration), stalks removed 3 sheets of gelatine 4tbsp elderflower cordial 25cm/10inch cake tin with removable bottom METHOD To make the base… • Put the biscuits into a sealed plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin to achieve a breadcrumb consistency. Tip them into a bowl and stir in the melted butter so all the crumbs are coated. Pour the mixture into the cake tin and press down using the back of a spoon

to produce an even surface. Chill the base in the fridge for an hour to firm up whilst you make the filling. To make the filling… • Soak the gelatine leaves in a bowl of cold water for 5 minutes to allow them to soften. Pour half of the cream into a saucepan and gently bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and stir in the gelatine leaves, one at a time, shaking off any excess water beforehand. Stir until all the gelatine has dissolved and set to one side to cool.

• Combine the cream cheese and sugar together in a bowl and beat until you reach a smooth and creamy consistency. Chop the strawberries into chunky pieces and stir them into the cream cheese mixture along with the cream and gelatine. • In a separate bowl, gently whip together the remaining cream with the elderflower cordial to form soft peaks. Gently fold this into the strawberry mixture. Pour the filling into the cake tin and smooth over the surface to create a clean, even finish. Return the cake tin to the fridge and chill for at least 3 hours. To serve… • Dip a knife into water and run it around the edge, between the tin and the cheesecake to loosen it. Remove it from the tin and gently remove the base using either a palette knife or a cake slice. Place on a serving plate and decorate with strawberries. Serve with a strawberry coulis and cream, accompanied with an iced cold elderflower pressé.

Can you remember the thrill of your first time? Does it make your heart beat faster, your pupils dilate or is it something you hide, feeling shameful and dirty when you confront it. Yes my friends, I’m talking about your Waitrose habit and the day you realise you’ve got a problem. It takes hold of you gradually, bit by bit increasing your dependence. Those wide alleys, subtle lighting and Le Creuset oven to tableware – as soon as you walk through those doors, you’re a hooked, and before you know it, you’re at the till point paying £250 for a selection of seafood and artisan ceramics you didn’t know you needed. At a local WA meeting (Waitrose Anonymous) Candice* described the moment she realised she’d hit rock

Nice problems to have and why you should to to work on a (goose) egg… bottom “It was Christmas Eve, I had so much food in my trolley, yet I wanted more.” She whispered. “I was like a mad woman screaming at the innocent staff. As soon as I uttered the words: ‘Just how is it even possible to run out of fresh lemongrass at Christmas’ I knew I needed help.” The thing is, everyone who goes to Waitrose knows they’re paying over the odds; no matter how many price match posters they stick up, you always end up spending more than at Tesco. No, the reason PLUs (people like us) go is because it’s a safe environment; No BOGOFs from the big W; it’s their keen desire to bring their customers brioche

burger buns which makes shopping there such a delight. Even the Heston Blumenthal recipes look manageable! Waitrose is to grocery shopping what Boden is to clothes shopping; When I flick through Boden’s glossy pages, I want to be on that holiday in La Rochelle and look exactly like Pandora (cos that’s usually their name) wearing a Breton top, shopping for baguettes in the market. The fact that the models are a size 6, about 22 years old, party in Miami, and wouldn’t be seen dead in anything from Boden doesn’t change a thing). It’s the feeling that you’re part of a club that counts. Of course there are still times when I don’t want to be part of the club, when I want to be in a Viz column instead, especially when I overhear comments like these: “The recession is still hitting us hard; I’m packing fresh apple slices for Lucy, because the dried ones are so expensive.” Or... “You leave the country for one week and the builder puts the cornicing upside down. I really don’t know what the world’s coming to.” But I simply have to accept that a shop whose “essentials” range includes cambazola, profiteroles and chamomile scented ironing water is not really posh; it’s just for PLUs, darling. And this chippy Northerner loves nothing more than feeling like a PLU. Now, pass my goose egg , I think I deserve it...

I would love to hear from you! Please write to me, Amanda Toner (maiden name Surtees!) via editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

Education Feature Education, schools, catchment area; I’m sure that if you’re a parent these are just three of many words that have been mentioned countless times in your household. Choosing a school for your children is one of the most difficult decisions you can make for your little ones; this will be the foundation of their education, the school listed on their future CV, where they will form friendships, be inspired and hopefully gain a passion for lifelong learning and bonds that could span a lifetime. Not much to think about then...

THE OUTSTANDING AIRTHRIE SCHOOL

When a school is graded as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, the government body responsible for standards in education, in all of its five judgements: • Overall effectiveness – Outstanding – 1 • Achievement of pupils – Outstanding – 1 • Quality of teaching – Outstanding – 1 • Behaviour and safety of pupils – Outstanding – 1 • Leadership and management – Outstanding – 1

It is fair to say that you and your children will not be disappointed. The teachers are dedicated to providing an environment in which pupils can thrive from the continual nurture and encouragement. Children are treated as individuals and teaching focus is on the needs and strengths of each of them, due to the small teaching groups that are in place. The school principal, Beth Sullivan, highlights the ethos of the school when discussing their mission statement: “Our first aim at Airthrie is that all pupils and staff are happy; relaxed, but wellmotivated, and therefore keen to work

hard and achieve their full potential,” Mrs Sullivan continued, “We hope to instil confidence and self-esteem in our children. We unashamedly offer a very friendly and homely environment, where every child is given a feeling of personal achievement and value, whatever their ability.” Pupils exceed national expectations by the time they leave Airthrie and this can be said for both academic and extracurricular activities; the quality of being a kind, respectful and polite person is of great importance to Mrs Sullivan and something that was noted by Ofsted: “The behaviour of pupils around the school, in the playground and in lessons is outstanding. This means pupils’ learning is not disrupted and they are highly motivated to learn. There is a very positive feeling of shared enthusiasm for, and love of, learning across all ages at the school, including the children in the Early Years Foundation Stage.” This

is obviously paramount to a child’s development and their relationship with education. One Ofsted inspector even stated that they had never experienced such positive praise from both parents and pupils, “Pupils enjoy coming to School as they confirmed through discussions. They are motivated to learn and take pride in presenting their work to very high standards... They are very enthusiastic about the school, making comments such as “learning is fun here”. It may sound too good to be true but it reinforces what Principal, Mrs Sullivan, states “We are so delighted that the continual hard work of both pupils and teachers has resulted in such a glowing Ofsted report and confirms that we are achieving our greatest aims: happy children, working positively in a productive environment”. Airthrie is based in the heart of Cheltenham. The school is a thriving independent day school and nursery for boys and girls aged 3 to 11 years. Airthrie prides itself on the excellence of the sports, music, drama, dance and art teaching offered. They also have daily access to the Cheltenham Ladies’ College, state-of-the-art sports facilities. Expectations! Recruitment Services on top form after bumper six months For local recruitment agency Expectations! Recruitment Services the last six months have been jam-packed with lots of positive moves for the company Starting the year by expanding out of Gloucestershire with the opening of a new branch in Leamington Spa, the company has significantly exceeded its predicted growth targets. Leamington is the third office in the group and is headed up by Warwickshire recruitment expert Dawn Walker; an award-winning recruitment manager who has 15 years’ experience in the industry. Dawn is supported by three highly qualified staff. Speaking about the move, Director, Victoria Maddock says “Demand for our services from our national clients who have offices in and around Coventry and Warwickshire is one of the reasons for our move into Leamington. I couldn’t be more delighted because not only does it mark the growth of our brand, but personally, it will also bring me back to where I started my recruitment career! Leamington is a great place to begin our expansion; but no matter what, Gloucestershire will always remain our home and we will continue to offer great recruitment to local businesses”. To support their expansion and reward key staff member Abi Howell, Directors Jo Long and Victoria Maddock asked Abi to join them on the Board. Abi, Manager of the Cheltenham Branch, has been with the company since 2009 when she joined to establish the temporaries division, and she is proud to be appointed Director. She says “I was over the moon to be asked as Expectations! is a fantastic company with a really great atmosphere. It’s also an exciting time for the company and I couldn’t be happier!” Speaking of the appointment, Director Jo Long says “It is Victoria's and my intention to recognise key staff who make a

significant contribution to the development and success of the company. To achieve Expectations' aims and objectives we need a committed, resourceful and responsible Management team, and Abi 'ticks all the boxes'. She has and continues to lead from the front as Manager of the company's first office and is 100% committed to the wellbeing and growth of the company. As well as directing our flagship office, she also makes a huge contribution to the company by helping to design and implement some of the infrastructure improvements which take place as our business grows. For all these reasons we had no hesitation in asking Abi to join us on the Board.” Joining the teams this year are two new Apprentices Becki Hume and Lucy Bull in the Gloucester and Cheltenham branches respectively. Following first Apprentice Kirsten Ball who joined the company in 2012, the two have taken administrative roles, supporting the recruitment consultants and helping with

Front of House service. Former Apprentice Kirsten, has taken a full-time role within the temporaries division and has already been promoted due to her commitment to Expectations! and her high calibre performance. Looking locally the labour market itself is becoming more buoyant which presents significant opportunity for Gloucestershire Business. What’s more, changes being introduced as a result of the Budget in March mean that SMEs in particular will benefit from NI relief which will prove beneficial. The Expectations! team is looking forward to the next six months which promise to be just as successful as the first six and are on hand to help Gloucestershire and Warwickshire businesses with their recruitment needs and staffing strategy.

MODERN MOTHERHOOD LEAVES LAW BEHIND The law continues to reveal that it is indeed an ass when it comes to keeping up with modern life, this month, with a case concerning a surrogate mother. It is also of note that these cases seem to come up where the people directing proceedings on behalf of the employer are not spending their own money! (Or so it would appear). The case in question concerned a woman, who worked in a hospital, who was unable to have children of her own. She and her partner wanted children and so the couple commissioned a surrogate mother to have the child. Therefore at no point was the employee actually pregnant. The pregnancy went ahead as planned and when the child was born, the employee in question was present. Through the wonders of modern science she was in fact breastfeeding the child within an hour of the birth. The employee was then given parental responsibility. For all intents and purposes, she was mothering the new born. This, you would hope, is the happy ending, or indeed the happy beginning we would want to the story. The employee in question, let’s call her the mother, then went off work to care for the new born. Something most families take for granted, and presumably experienced the energy sapping fatigue that accompanies the endless sleepless nights, rash induced panic and relatives popping around at inconvenient times to ogle the blissfully ignorant child. All is as well as it could be, until the employer then refuses the mother maternity leave on the basis that she is not technically the mother. One can only wonder as to the frame of mind of the hard nose,

Darren Sherborne

presumably friendless, individual that thought this was the right thing to do. The case promptly went to the tribunal, where the judge decided that this was clearly “too difficult” and referred the matter to the European Court. You could say that “the buck” did not even slow down at the tribunal. At the European Court, the usual practice is to refer the matter to the Advocate General (AG), whose opinion on the matter is usually followed. However, true to the spirit of this case the court did not follow the AG’s opinion, and decided that the mother should have no right to maternity leave. They reasoned that if a man were to have a baby commissioned by surrogacy, then he would not get maternity leave and therefore there was no sex discrimination. I hesitate to disagree with the learned

judges in this case (and coincidently agree with the Advocate General) but if a man did this, wouldn’t he be the “Father”? Not the mother? As such, he wouldn’t get maternity leave anyway! (The clue is in its name). The thing I note most however is this. In view of the cost of ordinary maternity leave, what jobsworth decided that it would be cheaper to fight this in the European Court than just let the mother have the leave that everyone else gets if they have a baby, even by adoption? If I may venture an opinion, had this been a private company where the decision maker was playing with their own money, this would have settled long before the English employment judge dodged the issue. Given that this mother worked in a hospital, I wonder what treatment could have been purchased for the cost of this litigation. I can see that there may be a point of principle here, but does surrogacy really happen so often as to present an ongoing cumulative cost risk? C2S Business Update BUSINESS LEADERS LOOK TO RECRUIT MILITARY PERSONNEL AND GILLMAN’S WIN NATIONAL AWARD Words by Suzanne Hall-Gibbins, Director of Circle2Success Recruitment challenges seem to be a recurring theme in meetings with local businesses. One obvious group of potential new employees would seem to be exmilitary staff, those already out of the armed forces and those coming out over the next 18 months or so. And with the counties military tradition this seems to be a match well made. Following a Leaders Forum where Hire A Hero presented to C2S members, BPE Solicitors hosted a dedicated session on military recruitment. A number of leading businesses attended and discussed the opportunities they had for recruitment and the challenges they were facing. The group heard from Hire a Hero; Recruit for Spouses and a number of businesses that have successfully recruited through these channels. The job opportunities from just those in the room was quite substantial. Following the meeting companies like Allcooper have already tapped into this resource to hire new staff.

Your questions answered by Mathew Waddington at Jordans Solicitors

Q A

My ex husband tells me that my Residence Order no longer exists and that he can take my children from me at any time. Is this true?

The law has indeed changed as of the 22nd April 2014. The Children and Families Act 2014 came into force. Whilst it is true to say that Residence and Contact Orders have now been abolished, they are automatically replaced by a new type of order called a Child Arrangements Order. At first glance it would look as if Residence Orders no longer exist, however if you look a little deeper into the Act you can find that a Child Arrangement Order can specify with whom the child is to live and how much time the other parent shall spend with the children concerned. Therefore, although your Residence Order is no longer called a Residence Order, it is now just as enforceable as it was beforehand but it is now called a Child Arrangements Order.

If parents cannot agree on with whom a child should live or how much time the child should spend with the other parent, then the court now says that the parties should attend mediation.

There is a very good Mediator in Cheltenham, Cheltenham Family Mediation, and they should be utilised first if there is a disagreement. If agreement cannot be reached or somebody refuses to attend mediation, then and only then should the court be asked to decide what is right for a child.

The court will look at what is in a child's best interests with particular reference to what a child wants (the older the child, the greater the weight is given to the child's views) what their needs are, how capable is everyone of meeting those needs, if there is any risk of harm and most importantly for younger children, what the children are used to. If someone is a main carer for young children the presumption is they should continue to be the main carer. I hope this sets your mind at ease and if you require any further information please don't hesitate to contact Mathew Waddington on 01242 268026 or by emailing mwaddington@hcrlaw.com .

The Importance of

Annual Vaccinations for Pets Dogs, cats and rabbits require annual vaccinations to remain healthy. Every month we send our clients reminder cards and several days later the phones will be red hot with owners diligently booking their pets in for boosters, however many people ask us the same question “What am I vaccinating against?” Dogs are routinely vaccinated against three viral diseases called parvovirus, hepatitis and distemper plus two bacterial diseases leptospirosis and infectious tracheobronchitis (also known as kennel cough). Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, this means owners can get the disease themselves directly from their dogs. In humans we call it Weil’s disease. Vets on the Park were one of the very first practices in the country to upgrade our leptospirosis vaccine to the newly launched L4 vaccine. This new vaccine targets recent wild bacterial strains that have emerged since the introduction of the vaccine over 50 years ago. Both leptospirosis and kennel

cough vaccines only last 12 month and so annual vaccination is essential. The other vaccines are given every 3 years. Cats are vaccinated against four viral diseases. Feline calici virus and feline herpes virus that cause cat ‘flu, infectious enteritis that causes vomiting and diarrhoea plus feline leukaemia virus. Many cat owners ask us if their pets still need annual boosters if they live indoors and the answer is always a

resounding ‘yes’. This is because owners can bring live ‘flu virus home on their hands or clothes from visiting friends and family with cats. We also advise that pet rabbits are vaccinated against the viral diseases myxomatosis and VHD. This is now a single combined annual vaccination. If you want to take your pet abroad using the Pet Travel Scheme then you will also need to make sure your pet is vaccinated against rabies. At Vets on the Park we are aware that many people have allowed their pets’ annual vaccines to lapse and for complete protection they may need a full course again at an additional cost. To help with this we will be running a Vaccine Amnesty for the month of June, whereby your pet will receive the full course for just the cost of a booster. We are also offering reduced price microchipping. So if your pet is not up to date with their vaccinations then give us a call today for some free advice on what we recommend.

Review

Natalie Letch spends a day recuperating at Cowley Manor’s C-Side... Amazing. I could end this review of my day at C-Side at the stunning Cowley Manor with that one word, yet that would not do my experience at C-Side any justice – it’s simply too good not to share. I have been to C-Side once before, and I had a wonderful time but I didn’t take advantage of the high-end gym and outdoor pool; the latter primarily due to it raining but not this time, the sun shone down upon C-Side and I was keen to embrace all it had to offer. The glass fronted spa exudes style and is the epitome of luxury. The timing of my spa day was absolutely perfect; sat neatly in between wedding planning, buying and moving into a house and meeting deadlines – that makes me feel exhausted just writing that! I opted for one of the new treatment on the C-Side Menu: Repair & Restore Massage - to be translated of 60 minutes of complete and indulgent bliss. I will not lie, I adore massages and relish any opportunity to have any tension eased from my weary muscles (a task usually forced upon by me to my dear fiancé). The Repair & Restore Massage is in conjunction with the range of Repair & Restore products from Cowley Manor’s own product line, Green & Spring (see above). Having read the description of the massage, I knew that I had chosen the ideal treatment; “A restorative body massage to nourish and repair the body whilst restoring needed energy” - just what was needed.

Following a trip to the gymnasium, a blissful swim in the outdoor pool , which I must add, could easily have been mistaken for the South of France I headed towards the Sauna, had a dip in the indoor pool. After such an exhausting morning, it was almost time for my treatment. I relaxed in my complimentary robe and it wasn’t long until it was time for my treatment to begin. The treatment rooms are also rather special. Tranquility washes over you as you step through into the rooms. My therapist offered me a music menu - yes, you even get to choose what music you wish to listen to while being pampered. I

opted for the Ministry of Sound, Chillout CD – the perfect accompaniment to any event that requires relaxation. Nothing is forced upon you at C-Side, everything is tailored to the individual. The massage began first by inhaling a range of aromatic, herbal oils, which filled the air and where to be used as the massage oil. Scents of lavender instantly transported me to that distant, serene place reserved for moments like this; any stresses soon faded away. I suffer from tension in my muscles; from my neck and all the way down to my toes! I can often tense up during massages but the strokes and kneading techniques erased any knots that I had. Both the hand and foot massage seemed to focus on various pressure points, which alleviated any remaining tension. Time passed far too quickly during my treatment, I think I may have even dozed for a short while... I can honestly say that it was all it claimed to be and more; restorative, relaxing and ever so luxurious. I soon made my way back to have my complimentary herbal tea by the pool, oh and the arrival of my 2 course lunch; Mackerel Nicoise followed by Eton Mess... Well, it would have been rude not too, wouldn’t it? Treat yourself to a ‘Repair & Restore’ spa day at Cowley Manor’s C-Side spa and you will be left feeling as though you are walking on air... www.cowleymanor.com

Put a little Sparkle into Summer Nick Stephens offers his tips on how to pair our cuisine with the perfect bottle of sparkling wine... As a nation we love sparkling wine and we have been savouring the bubbles for over 300 years here in the UK. With summer upon us and the promise of balmy days and BBQs fixed firmly in mind an ice cold glass of sparkling wine fits the bill perfectly. Instantly refreshing on a hot sunny day and brilliant with food, sparkling wine sales boom over the summer months. There are a wide range to choose from and I've discovered two little corkers – a dry and a medium sweet from Duc de Berieu. They are both refreshing, light and elegant in style; and are top quality wines made by the specialist team at Grand Vins de Gironde, owners of several renowned chateaux. If you enjoy a good Cava or Prosecco these two new discoveries will certainly impress your tastebuds. Duc de Berieu is available at www.bordeaux-undiscovered.co.uk for £7.99 a bottle. Duc de Berieu is made with the Ugni Blanc grape, which is the French name for Trebbiano. The name Ugni Blanc holds the key to this grape, it's derived from the old French name 'Unia' which comes from the Latin 'Eugenia, meaning 'noble' and the grape is an unsung hero when it comes to sparkling wines. Especially if they are well crafted by experts such as Grand Vins de Gironde. The dry Duc de Berieu Brut is a lovely light bodied sparkling wine with subtle flavours of apricot, ripe peach and fresh cut lime lifted by heady floral notes of orange and almond blossom. It has beautifully balanced acidity and a soft exuberant mousse of fine bubbles. A gorgeous glassful at parties and get togethers, Duc de Berieu is clean, crisp and full of charm. It's great with seafood and starters, salty foods such as salami, prosciutto and feta cheese, creamy pastas, poultry, fragrant Chinese cuisine and sweet pastries.

THAI CHICKEN SATAY 1 inch piece of fresh ginger root 3 cloves garlic 1 tbsp Thai Curry Paste 1 tbsp ground turmeric 2 tbsp whipping cream flavoured with 4 drops coconut extract 2lb chicken breasts, sliced into thick ribbons Pound the ginger root and garlic into a paste using a pestle and mortar. Add the Thai Curry Paste, turmeric and whipping cream and stir. Place the chicken pieces on a plate and rub the paste into the chicken. Marinate at room temperature for 2 hours.

The medium sweet Duc de Berieu Demi Sec has delicious delicate flavours of ripe peach, pear and almonds with lovely floral notes of acacia flowers and subtle sweet anise. It's very moreish with its fizzy foam of soft bubbles and is also a fabulous food wine. It's fantastic with nibbles – antipasto and tapas and Indian food. Try it with sushi, rich oily fish such as smoked salmon and mackerel, creamy pastas and soups, poultry and pâté. Being versatile, Duc de Berieu pairs wonderfully well with spicy foods so why not try them with Thai Chicken Satay? Satay makes a fantastic BBQ meal – you can offer different dips with it, the most common being a thick peanut based sauce. However you can have satay with soy based sauces and some are even flavoured with turmeric, curry spices and coconut milk. You can

Preheat the barbeque! Thread each chicken slice onto a skewer and cook for a couple of minutes on each side. Serve with Thai Peanut Sauce. Enjoy!

serve satay with platters of fresh exotic fruits like mangoes, papayas, bananas and pineapples. Side bowls of finely sliced cucumber and onion or tomatoes and sweet green peppers are good as well. THE CRAVEN ARMS

BEER FESTIVAL

It’s time to prepare for the 8th annual beer festival at The Craven Arms... Preparations to host The Craven Arms, 8th annual beer festival are well underway. On the 11th – 13th July, cider will be flowing and the ales will tapped once again and the bands will be playing to a marquee full of locals and first timers alike. What began as a small affair eight years ago has seen the beer festival grown by the barrel year by year and continues to attract a range of visitors of all ages. The marquee that hosts the selection of ales and ciders means that come rain or shine, Mother and Son duo, Barbara and Sam, ensure there is fun to be had. Sam is the pubs chef and is in charge of the cider and beer that include an eclectic range of ales and ciders that will certainly liven up the party. Our renowned BBQ and pig roast, together with the bun, stuffing and, of course, apple sauce will be bound to go down a treat. Don’t fancy a BBQ? No problem. Our pub will continue to run normally alongside the festival, where you can indulge in a sit down meal. Saturday will see the return of the Farmers & Craft Market which last year attracted a variety of stores from

“What makes our beer festival so different, is that you can make of it what you want; whether it’s sampling new beers or if you fancy a fun festival experience with live music and dancing – our priority is for you to have a wonderful time” delicate cakes to locally produced arts and crafts. The skittle alley was another popular addition, which was not only a hit with the children but the adults, too. This was also perfect entertainment for the little ones, while parents relaxed in the sun. Sunday afternoon will provide the perfect opportunity to relax and listen to the smooth sounds of Jazz by Liquid Sounds. In 2013 The Craven Arms launched its own ale; ‘Legless Bob’.This has proved to be very popular with the locals and is now a regular on the taps. Barbara’s husband, Bob, sadly lost his leg through ill health a few

years ago. This has been hard on the family and particularly on Bob who continues to struggle with Diabetes. ‘Legless Bob’ is a tribute to him and also a way in which the pub raises money for Diabetes UK, as 20p of every pint goes to the charity. Since being launched on 5th May 2013 the pints sold have raised over £2,000. Brockhampton is a real Cotswolds community and the beer festival reflects this community spirit. If you fancy a stopover, the local farmer Robert, offers camping for £5 per tent in his field, with portaloos provided, that is only a short walk away. The site has such beautiful views and will be the perfect camping venue for the weekend. What makes our beer festival so different, is that you can make of it what you want; whether it’s sampling new beers or if you fancy a fun festival experience with live music and dancing – our priority is for you to have a wonderful time. We hope to see you this year! For more details please visit our website: www.thecravenarms.co.uk or phone: 01242 820 410 Email: cravenarms@live.co.uk

LONGLEVENS ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS After missing out on a promotion by 1 point Longlevens RFC finished the season in style at the home of rugby, Twickenham and were crowned the RFU Junior Vase Champions after beating the Rugby Lions 23 – 12 in a tightly contested final Longlevens lift the RFU Junior Vase after an impressive 23-12 victory over previously unbeaten Rugby Lions. Rugby Lions held a weight advantage over the younger side of Longlevens, but this proved useless as the pace was too much for the Lions to compete. Three first half tries from Longlevens proved to be the deciding factor as the game slowed in the second period. Longlevens captain Jed HolmanJones said: “This is the happiest day of my life. It was pretty tense out there but we’re all ecstatic now.” We’re quite a young side and we will only get better. We missed out on promotion by just one point so next season we want to go and sort that out, and hopefully get back here again as well.” The win for Longlevens was made sweeter with knowing that the starting line-up contained 12 players that have come through the junior section. Longlevens have always boasted a

“Longlevens starting line-up contained 12 players that have come through the junior section” strong junior section but players have often drifted away and into the hands of local rivals. Richard Rudge the Chairman and Head Coach of Longlevens, has set out a four-year plan to develop the club’s facilities. He said: “We’ve always had a really successful junior section, with over 350 players, and the seniors have always been roughly in the same league “But we have so many players who have gone onto Gloucester and even become internationals – now we want to start building on the senior section. “The majority of boys on Sunday have come up from just seven-yearsold winning at Twickenham.

IN A CYCLING

SUPERNOVA

As summer steadily approaches, the likelihood of us getting outdoors on our bikes increases tenfold, and with it so does our need for cycling inspiration and comfortable shorts! BY LUCY DENVER Before the summer hit, I headed up to the British Cycling Centre in Manchester to check out the new Adidas Supernova range, and to meet two young, fearless riders who take on the adrenalineinducing velodrome every day as part of their Team GB training. They are Becky James, 2013 World Champion for both Track Sprint and Keirin, and Lizzie Armistead, who took home Silver in the 2012 Olympics Road Race, and they make cycling a pretty cool sport to get into. I’ve always been a bit wary of cycling gear, mainly because a lot of the shorts make your bum look twice its size and because so much of the clothing is pretty uninspiring. Because Adidas work with the Team GB squad so closely, they get the kit spot on. Their Supernova range features lightweight fabric to wick sweat away from the skin and an electric blue colour scheme which, cleverly, makes even me look as though I’ve just come back from two weeks in the sun. Nice work, Adidas! To test it out even further, I teamed up with Rhianon Taylor, fabulous spin instructor at Fitness First in Cheltenham, to put the kit through its paces. Although the shorts do make you feel like you’re wearing a nappy (and walking as though you’ve just stepped

off a horse) no one else is any the wiser. Most importantly, they make a big difference to sitting on a bike for an hour: “That was the most comfortable class I’ve ever done!” says Rhianon afterwards. “I’m definitely wearing them for the next one!” So, what about Becky and Lizzie? Do they like the kit, and how do they manage their hectic training schedules? Becky’s whole family is into cycling: ‘They’re amazing,’ she says, ‘especially my mum. She’s really something on a bike. It’s great that it’s something we can all enjoy together – though it can get a bit competitive sometimes!’ I also ask Becky about her nerves before a competition. How does someone so young cope with so much pressure? ‘I used to get really nervous, but now I just enjoy it. I’m very lucky to be able to do what I love every day, so now I focus on doing my absolute best and living in the moment rather than worrying about every detail.’ Becky and Lizzie’s training differs hugely – Becky loves the gym, for starters, whereas Lizzie admits she’d much rather stick to her bike - but they

both love the Adidas kit they get to wear. Becky says ‘it’s all really comfortable, which is great because we spend so much time in it. I really like the cut of the tops – the longer length in the back is perfect when you’re leaning over your handlebars for hours!’ As for Lizzie, she loves the sleeveless jersey “because the cut is so feminine and flattering It also helps avoid the classic cycling tan lines in the summer!” Cycling is known for being heavy-handed on the lycra front, but if you get the fit right so your kit is comfortable, then, as Lizzie says “the tighter the better! When I’m not training I tend to wear my Adidas track pants and a pair of Boost trainers. They’re basically like wearing slippers but with the added bonus of being able to wear them in public.” Finally, I asked the girls what advice they’d give to anyone thinking of competing in a local triathlon or getting into competitive cycling. “If you’re considering it already, the only thing holding you back is having the confidence to do it. Everyone has to start somewhere: we were both so nervous for our first races, but we loved it and look at us now! We get to do this for a living – how cool is that?” Cool indeed. Check out your local triathlon club or Fitness First Cheltenham for some great spin classes with Rhianon. Tweet me @denvertronix or vist my Facebook page to get in touch: Lucy Denver Coaching

Nutrition&Fitness Reaching a plateau with your weight loss? Read Jodie’s advice on how to kick start your regime for the summer... If you feel like you are putting in 100% effort with your exercise and still feeling like your just not hitting your weight loss goals it may be time to have a look at your nutrition before and after you exercise. There is no doubt about it, having the discipline to stay on track with your nutrition and stay focused is tough. Do you know what you should be eating and drinking? Can you stick at it? Do you need more help and guidance to keep you on track? If the answer is yes, then get in touch. I can help you to develop a plan that will suit you and your lifestyle, keep you motivated and give you the support you need to hit your goals. HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED...

Tip 1: Eat smaller meals more often If you’ve been following the typical nutritional advice of cutting back on calories and consuming no more than “three square meals” a day in the hope of shifting your fat-burning efforts into high gear, you may actually be throwing the whole process into reverse. Active people who skimp on calories and eat infrequently (only three times a day) may be training their bodies to get by on less energy and therefore more readily storing unburned calories as bodyfat. It is better to eat smaller portions more frequently (about every three hours) to accelerate metabolism and maintain steady energy levels throughout the day. Tip 2: Carbs and proteins The simple fact is, our bodies work better with a balance of carbohydrates and protein. The carbohydrates will provide some energy during exercise and the protein is essential for building healthy muscle and maintaining a strong immune system. Protein has also been shown to reduce your appetite and help you feel fuller.

Here are some examples:

Pre workout foods (3-4 hours before exercise) • Small jacket potato with baked beans, cottage cheese or tuna • Porridge with a banana and a teaspoon of sugar • Wholemeal rice with vegetables and lean meat • Grilled chicken breast with salad wholemeal sandwich • Chicken wrap or tuna wholemeal sandwich homemade • Wholemeal pita with mackerel Pre workout snacks (1-2 hours before exercise) • A piece of fruit • Oatcake • 4 celery sticks hummus • 1 carrot with hummus • 10 Nuts; almonds, walnuts, pine nuts. pumpkin seeds but NO PEANUTS • Smoothie

Tip 3: Choose “appropriate” portion sizes Portion size is important to weight management. Employ a common sense

approach, such as using the palm of your hand or your clenched fist for judging the portion sizes of food.

Tip 4: Get containers to store your food Purchase plastic storage containers, sports bottles, a water jug and a cooler to store and carry your food. Having nutritious meals and snacks within reach during a hectic day can keep you on track. Tip 5: Drink plenty of water every day It’s especially important to stay well hydrated, especially after exercising. Drink at least one glass of water with every meal, and more throughout the day. If you have an occasional diet soda, coffee or tea, you’ll need to drink an additional glass to compensate for the diuretic. I hope this has helped you. If you would like some further support, then contact me at Jodie@hartfitnesss.co.uk or call me on 07787 561 303.

SUMMER SPORTS Shane Duff considers how the summer months welcome a change in sporting events and morale

‘‘

“All ages can get involved, paint their faces and sing a song for their nation. A pub full of people all rooting for the same team is quite a nice atmosphere to be in”

’’

Where the onset of summer often indicates a break in the football calendar, this year it will be in full swing as the World Cup kicks off in Brazil. I am reallylooking forward to this event, especially since public expectation is lower than it normally is, so the pressure will be less intense. Yet, I say this now at the time of writing but we are a good few weeks away from kick off, so there is plenty of time for the newspapers to raise hopes and set all the players up for an inevitable fall, and subsequent trial by media. One thing I do like about the World Cup is the lack of rivalry between clubs. Instead there is a real sense of patriotism and community spirit; people come together and have street parties, barbeques or head down to the local pub for a gathering whether they like football or not. I know many people that have good memories from World Cup matches, but have no recollection of the actual game. All ages can get involved, paint their faces and sing a song for their nation. A pub full of people all rooting for the same team is a great atmosphere to be in. Of course, June is not only for football. Many other sports are ticking over in their normal schedule. This

summer, I’m heading to Amsterdam on a charity bike ride in aid of Prostate Cancer, along with representatives of all of the Football League clubs. I really can’t wait and I have been clocking up the training miles in preparation...I just pray for sunshine! Cycling is much more fun in the sun. Another summer passion of mine is Cricket. This summer sees England taking on Sri Lanka this June in a Test Series and I am lucky enough to be heading to Lords, the home of Cricket, to take in one of the days. Again it’s a nice place to go if the sun shines. I am starting to realise that a lot of my summer plans are reliant on the weather. Fingers crossed that things go well... Since retiring from Professional Football I am enjoying things that I have never done before. The simple act of going to sporting venues other than football and watching elite athletes is a lot of fun and really inspirational. I would recommend any armchair fan to get out there and experience many sports from a different close up view. @duffo16

Time for a massage? Where do you stand on the subject of ‘massage’. Have you ever had one? I have once and I hated it. It was a bit painful and required too much lying down and keeping still. This opinion though, puts me in the minority Most people I’ve spoken to, say the thought of being kneaded by strong, expert hands in a warm, pleasantly scented room with relaxing music, while in theory receiving actual therapy, is a very welcome thought indeed. Maybe I had the wrong masseuse . Perhaps I was just too busy to properly relax that day but for some reason, the prospect of a spa style rub down makes me want to grit my teeth and arch my back while backing out of the room, pronto. But of course, spa style isn’t the only type of massage you can get. Let me introduce Tim: He is a Chartered Veterinary Physiotherapist. Before you get too hung up on the animal side of his title; vet physios have to qualify to do humans first and the progression onto our pets is as an additional skill not a replacement one. Basically this is Sports Massage – cancel the fragranced oils and plinky plonky music... and add a slightly more workmanlike approach and possibly a gym. I am a horse owner and almost embarrassed to admit that my equine athletes regularly see Tim for a tune up, but he’s never once had a look at me. This, he says, is very typical – horselovers have a tendency to spend all their money and energy on their animals. TWO new pairs of shoes every few weeks, regular dentist visits, chiropractic, physiotheraputic, and sometimes even psychological assessments are often part of the monthly routine on the yard, while we limp and hobble our way through various injuries and ailments and can often be seen in the same shoes year after year after year. Well, this – for me at least – is all set to change. I’ll be brief, but will outline some of the things, from a sporting

point of view that are wrong with my body: Two years ago, I broke my back and squashed a disc. Before that I fell off, landed on my neck and couldn’t turn my head for over a month. Since then, I’ve badly twisted my knee, dislocated my right shoulder twice, rupturing the cartilage (this will never heal) and torn three ligaments in my right ankle. As a result, I’m now a bit lop-sided and in permanent (but manageable) pain. Tim has convinced me to get on his table. Obviously this treatment will differ enormously from the last time I put a towel over my bum and lay face down on a white plastic cushion, but I’m still anxious. Tim did NOT fall out of the ugly tree – what if I get giggly and flustered when he puts his hands on me instead of my animals? And I’m UBER ticklish. Goodness, I’m gritting my teeth and backing away already! However, I’m so crooked, I’m actually

transferring it to the horses and making them crooked too. There has been no sudden development of self preservation – I’ve not booked myself in for an indulgent (and required) treatment because it would do me good. I’m going because it will benefit the fourlegged creatures I spend most of my time sitting on.... so I’ve simply got to go through with it, gritted teeth or not. Perhaps this could work. I could possibly be transformed from a wonky, slightly lame, fearing the approaching 40th birthday...to feeling better and more agile than I’ve done in years. (Maybe Tim is a magician!) Watch this space, I’ll let you know. If you would like to share your stories about your pets with Kate Justice, please email the Editor at editor@stylemagazines.co.uk
