Welcome, fellow survivors; we made it through and

Costume College is back in person! I am so excited that you are

going to celebrate the end of the apocalypse costuming our new

world with me!

I would like to begin by thanking: my predecessor Geri Rex who led us

through the craziness of the last three years with so much grace, the

Leadership Team without whom I would have been lost, and the entire Costume College Committee who have been flexible and worked so hard to plan an amazing weekend. I would also like to thank my Assistant Dean Christienne Palmieri who will be taking us from our New World to “Traveling the Silk Road,” our bonus track this year. She has kept me on track planning this event!

I know that this year’s theme “Costuming Post Apocalypse, Creating a New World ‘’ was just one more thing to adapt to when you were expecting “The 20’s”. The theme of the 20’s made sense for 2020 following Geri’s planned theme of the Teens, but to be honest it just didn’t feel like the 20’s were starting out all that well. I wanted to take a moment and acknowledge that we have all been through a rough period that at times felt like the apocalypse, and give us a chance to reset and celebrate the new world we are creating. In our new world there are no zombies, but I can now talk to my family members who live from Alaska to New Orleans on a regular basis, and I can stitch and bitch with friends from all over the world. Amazing! New worlds come with changes, and there have been changes to Costume College, in the interest of health and safety but also to make it better! I have also made an effort to keep things simple this year because my volunteer planning team has had a two-year hiatus and we are all out of practice with large social gatherings.

PLEASE, TAKE THE TIME TO READ EVERYTHING IN THIS BOOK PRIOR TO COMING TO COSTUME COLLEGE. Even if you have been coming for years, you don’t want to miss the new (and ever changing) information about what we have planned for you for this year.

After you check in for Costume College Thursday night, please join us at the Poolside Welcome Party “Apocalypse WOW: What Are You Wearing?” I am pretty sure I will be wearing a costume on the top, comfy pants on the bottom! After a full day of amazing classes, we will be exchanging the Friday Night Showcase with a progressive event of games and fun in “Passport to the End of the World.” Saturday’s Gala will be a night to remember, voyaging on the Titanic. Sunday our History Bounding Breakfast is sure to fuel your day and in the afternoon nibble on sandwiches and scones at our Pride, Prejudice and Zombies Tea. Please dress for our new world in whatever makes you feel your best, be it your comfy clothes, dressed to theme, or a costume from your favorite era. We are all here to learn, socialize and have a great time!

If you are new to Costume College, please join me and our Hotel Liaison, Maegen Hensley at Freshman Orientation Friday morning before classes start. You will hear entertaining stories and receive lots of tips to get the most out of your weekend.

It is also our priority to make sure that everyone, those new to the halls and those returning, not only have an amazing weekend, but feels safe and welcome. For those that are new to Costume College and looking to join the horde but a little bit nervous, we will be passing out cockades to let the zombies know they should talk to you rather than take a bite out of you.

Please pick one up at the Information Desk or from me or my Leadership Team. If you see anyone wearing one, please be an ambassador for our new world and make them feel welcome; ask them to join your group for a chat!

Registration for Costume College Opens Saturday, April 2, 2022 at 9am PDT

Tickets for Saturday’s Gala and Sunday’s Tea go on sale April 2, 2022!

Early Registration (and tickets for Saturday’s Gala and Sunday’s Tea) for this year’s Costume College Teachers, Committee Members and CGW Board Members begins Monday, March 28, 2022 at 9am PDT. Registration and ticket sales close June 15, 2022 — however, space is limited and may sell out prior to this date.

How To Register for Costume College and purchase tickets to the Gala and Tea Step 1: Log in to your Costumer’s Guild West account, either by clicking on the “Register Here” link or going to costumersguild.org and clicking the “Member Login’’ button.

Costumer’s Guild West changed its event registration system in May 2021. The new system is linked to CGW’s website. All those wishing to attend Costume College will need an account/profile with CGW to register for Costume College. You do not need to join CGW to create an account/profile.

If you are not a CGW member and have not attended one of CGW’s virtual events you will need to create an account (this will not make you a CGW member – or require you to pay for membership – this just makes the Registration form personalized to you). This can be done when filling out a CGW event registration form or before registering for a CGW event by selecting the “Create a Guest Account” option on CGW’s website.

Step 2: Fill out the Registration form.

Step 3: If registering to attend classes, select “Student Registration,” otherwise select none. After clicking, several additional questions will appear, including information for your name badge.

Pricing is automatically generated, based on your CGW Membership status. If you are a current CGW Member and do not see CGW Member price options, please contact the Costume College Registrar at cocoregistrar@ yahoo.com).

Sister Guilds - Due to changes made to CGW’s Bylaws and Standing Rules in September 2021, Costume College no longer offers a Sister Guild member rate.

Step 4: If purchasing Gala and/or Tea ticket(s), select ticket option, otherwise select none. Once you have selected to purchase a Gala ticket, you will be given the option to request a vegetarian meal.

Due to the limited number of tickets available to the Gala and Tea, once you have selected to purchase a ticket, the system will give you 10 minutes to complete the form, including entering payment information.

If you are a CGW Member or have attended a CGW event since June 2021, then you should have an account/ profile. If you do not remember your log-in information, you can use the retrieve username and/or reset password functions on CGW’s website.

There is a limit of one ticket to each event per person. To purchase additional tickets you will need to ‘register’ the person you are purchasing the ticket(s) for by clicking the ‘Register Guest” at the bottom of the page.

Step 5: Click “Next” or, if registering another person, click “Register Guest” or “Register Household Member” (for those with Household memberships).

Step 6: Enter your payment information and submit your registration form.

That’s it! You’re done. You will be emailed an invoice and welcome/confirmation letter automatically.

Health and Safety Requirements CGW and the Costume College Committee are committed to providing a safe environment for all of our teachers, students, vendors, and committee members. As such we will be following all current masking, vaccine and/or testing requirements, per local laws and hotel policies. We greatly appreciate everyone’s commitment to helping us provide a safe environment for all of our attendees.

All Costume College 2022 attendees are expected to follow all state laws, regulations, and ordinances, local laws, regulations, and ordinances, hotel policies, and CGW policies. Specific and up-to-date regulations will be provided to all attendees closer to the event date. As of March 10, 2022 the following policies are in effect:

Properly fitting face masks (no bandanas or face shields, please) must be worn in all classrooms, tours, the Marketplace, and the Bargain Basement. The CDC recommends wearing surgical masks or higher-level respirators (e.g., N95s, KN95s, KF94s) with good fit.

Proof of vaccination(s) (series completed by Thursday, July 14th, 2022) or recent negative PCR COVID test (within 72 hours) will be required at event check-in per Hotel policy for events with 500 or more attendees.

Antigen or other rapid tests will not be accepted.

•

Saturday Gala and Sunday Afternoon Tea ticket holders - Proof of vaccination(s) (series completed by Thursday, July 14th, 2022) or recent negative PCR COVID test (within 72 hours) will be required per CGW policy at the door for the Saturday Gala and the Sunday Afternoon Tea. This is due to that large number of people eating in an enclosed space at these events. Antigen or other rapid tests will not be accepted.

•

In spaces where a face mask is required — If you are asked by anyone (including, but not limited to, hotel staff, fellow teachers, attendees, Costume College Committee Members, or other hotel guests), to adjust your mask or put your mask on, please comply immediately. Failure to do so is considered harassment, and will not be tolerated.

•

In spaces where the wearing of a mask is optional (the Costume Exhibit room, Lounge, Hotel hallways, lobby and restaurant) please treat others with consideration and respect as everyone navigates their own masking preferences.

•

Yelling, berating, and/or verbal abuse of any kind is considered harassment, and will not be tolerated.

•

If any participant at Costume College 2022, including all teachers, students, vendors, and volunteers who violates any of these health policies, will be asked to leave the event (including the Gala and the Tea) and will not be refunded for the event cost.

Disability Accomodation It is the policy of the Costumer’s Guild West to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”). We will not discriminate against any attendee of Costume College. We will also reasonably accommodate all attendees with disabilities unless the accommodations would cause undue hardship to the Costumer’s Guild West or the Marriott Warner Center in Woodland Hills.

If you require an accommodation for special needs covered under the ADA, you must notify the Costumer’s Guild West and/or the Marriott Warner Center within a reasonable time before the beginning of Costume College. The person you need to notify of your special needs is the Hotel Liaison of Costume College, Maegen Hensley by e-mail at cocohotelliaison@yahoo.com.

Additionally, we will keep the information regarding your condition and special needs confidential. Only those members of the Costumer’s Guild West and the Marriott Warner Center who are in a “need to know” position will be informed of your situation.

COVID-19 Risk and Release of Liability

By participating in the activities described above, I hereby acknowledge and agree to the following: I, on behalf of myself, my personal representatives and my heirs, hereby voluntarily agree to release, waive, discharge, hold harmless, defend and indemnify the Costumer’s Guild West, Inc and it’s officers, agents, and volunteers from any and all claims, actions for losses of bodily injury, property damage, wrongful death, loss of services or otherwise which may arise out of my participation in the activities listed above.

I specifically understand that I am releasing, discharging and waiving any claims or actions that I may have presently or in the future for the negligent acts or other conduct by the officers and agents of the Costumer’s Guild West, Inc. Costumer’s Guild West, Inc. reserves the right to make any and all changes to Costume College, at any time and without notice, including changes that are imposed by local, state and federal requirements.

Proof of Vaccination or Negative Test Results Proof of vaccination(s) (series completed by Thursday, July 14th, 2022) or recent negative PCR COVID test (within 72 hours) will be required at event check-in, as well as at the door for both the Saturday Gala and Sunday Afternoon Tea. To prove that you have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, you may present a digital vaccination record, vaccination record card, a photocopy of the card, or a photo of the card on a phone.

To prove that you had a recent negative test, you will be asked for a photo ID and a negative COVID-19 PCR test result (administered within the prior 72 hours).

There is an inherent and elevated risk of exposure to COVID-19 in any public place or place where people are present and there is no guarantee, express or implied, that those attending Costume College 2022 will not be exposed to COVID-19. By registering for Costume College 2022 and/or purchasing tickets to the Saturday Gala and/or the Sunday Tea I do hereby acknowledge that I have been fully informed of the risk of exposure to COVID-19.

Warner Center Marriott Woodland Hills As most veterans to Costume College will tell you, it is absolutely worth it to stay at the hotel for the weekend. Much of your College Experience comes from the impromptu discussions that occur in the hallways, over breakfast and during late night visits. Staying at the hotel lets you relax and enjoy the weekend without driving home LATE or getting up extra early to make it to a class on time. Warner Center Marriott has had the pleasure of hosting Costume College since 2010 and their entire staff is always prepared and excited to make it an extra special weekend. We’ve heard several times that Costume College is their favorite weekend, and some employees specifically request to work just to see us.

Costume College has a discounted rate of $147 plus tax per room/pre night. Our special room rate varies depending on availability, and are single/quadruple occupancy. Rollaways are available at an additional cost of $20 per night, for king bedded rooms only (not double bedded rooms). Parking is $16.00 per night, per car.

All rooms include irons, ironing boards, hairdryer, and coffeemakers – with mini-refrigerators upon request (first come – first serve). The rooms are large enough to accommodate up to four people.

Staying at the hotel allows you to: •

Have a convenient place to change before the Gala and/or Tea;

Have a convenient place to store all the stuff you bring to Costume College and all the purchases you make from the Marketplace;

•

Have a Discounted Breakfast Buffet on Sunday;

•

Be in walking distance of an abundance of restaurants (see Getting Food article for details);

•

Enjoy the hotel’s pool, Jacuzzis, work-out room, cocktail lounge and restaurant.

For those of you planning on hosting guests in your rooms during the evening and into the late night, please try and book a room on the higher floors. This is to ensure that we are not disturbing any other guests in the hotel, as we will not have an “Entertainment Floor” officially designated.

Parking at the Hotel Costume College Members Staying at the Marriott Warner Center: If you are staying at the hotel and parking on-site, you will need to let the Hotel Registration desk know that you have a vehicle upon check-in and you will receive a parking pass. The hotel will charge your room bill $16.00 per car per day for every night you are registered as a guest. The parking pass will allow you in and out privileges.

Costume College Members Not Staying at the hotel: Daily visitors may purchase parking at the Valet desk in front of the hotel for their day-stay. There are no in and out privileges for the day pass. However, as an alternative, there is some parking behind the hotel next to the park and across the street in the mall parking lot. Please note the parking hour signage for each location.

Costume College or the Marriott Warner Center is not responsible for any parking tickets you may receive for disregarding outside parking signage.

How to make Hotel Reservations Hotel reservations are being conducted differently this year. Due to the need to try to maximize our room block, we will be taking reservations through our own program, creating a rooming list, and confirming everyone on the list closer to the date of the convention. This will allow us ease of cancellations, room night changes, and exchanges. In June, the rooming list will be sent to the hotel for booking. You will then be notified when it is time for you to make an official reservation with the hotel using your credit card.

To request a hotel room please complete the Hotel Room Reservation Request form. The link to this form will be sent to registered attendees in the Welcome Letter. (The form will also be available on CGW’s website to all students, teachers, committee/board members, and vendors once they have logged into their CGW profile.)

When filling out the form you will need: •

Type of attendee – Student, Teacher, Committee/Board Member/Ops, Vendor

The dates of your stay

•

The type of room (1 king bed, 2 double beds or 1 king bed plus sleeper sofa) needed

•

The names of your roommate(s) if you plan on having any

Filling out the Hotel Room Reservation Request Form is not a guarantee for a room under the Costume College hotel block as requests are accepted on a first come basis. We have allocated rooms for each type of attendee, so please check all that apply in the first question asked (and for roommates as well). Those requests with 3 or 4 roommates will have priority for rooms with double beds.

Once the room requests have filled up you will be placed on a waiting list until we can verify the entries and check for duplication. As duplicate and invalid entries are removed, and as allotted room nights are calculated, we will notify the next person on the waiting list.

Please note special requests for rooms will not be taken at this time other than what is listed on the request form. Requests such as connecting rooms, high floor or low floor requests, early check in requests, extra towels, are things the hotel needs to know. You will have an opportunity to enter those requests when you make your official reservation with the hotel.

Transportation **Face coverings are required at all times while in all SoCal Airports, and on all shuttles and ground transportation.** Please check individual airlines for their masking requirements.

General Directions to the Hotel: The Marriott Warner Center is located at 21850 Oxnard Street, Woodland Hills, California 91367. Take whichever freeway connects you to the US 101 West, and exit at Topanga Canyon Blvd, North. Proceed 0.6 miles to Oxnard Street and turn right. Proceed 0.1 miles. The hotel will be on your right.

Bringing Your Own Food •

Your hotel room may not come with a mini-fridge. 90% of the rooms come with a fridge. If the room does not, you’ll need to request one if you have perishables. Be sure to call the hotel and request a mini-fridge ahead of time. They are not guaranteed, but at least the request is there and they will keep it in mind when assigning your room.

It’s easy to over-book yourself and wind up taking classes the whole day through, or being sidelined by friends on your way to a quick meal. It’s always a good idea to carry a few baggies of snacks or an energy bar or two.

Starbucks is always there and is open long hours, but at peak times the line can be exasperating. Have a backup plan.

•

Carry a bottle of water with you. Stay hydrated.

If you are a gold or platinum Marriott Rewards Member, you will gain access to the Executive Lounge which has complimentary snacks and beverages all day. Plus the buffet breakfast is free! Be sure to mention your status upon hotel check-in.

What to Wear Costume College is designed to offer endless opportunities to learn about, create, and show off costumes.

However, there is no requirement to wear a costume to any event. You can spend the entire weekend in your everyday clothes and you will be perfectly acceptable. Most students spend their classroom time this way anyway. If you want to dress up a bit for the events, please feel free but don’t feel pressured.

Hotel & Local Business Information

While there are a lot of places to eat in the hotel and adjoining areas, we realize that eating out three meals a day can be expensive and time consuming, not to mention that it’s impossible with many diets and food allergies. You are more than welcome to bring your own food. We suggest keeping the following in mind:

At major events: Thursday Night Welcome Party, Friday Night Event, Sunday Breakfast, Fantasy Tea, and especially at the Time Traveler’s Ball & Gala costumes are a wonderful way to enhance the event. Remember that at each event you will be walking, maneuvering around tables and chairs, sitting, talking, and often eating and drinking. Test your costume at home if you’re not sure it will work in any of these situations.

In the hallways and classrooms: If you want to dress up the rest of the time, feel free to do so. But above all, be comfortable and be cognizant of the comfort of others. Costume College classes, workshops and demos are learning experiences, so make sure that your costume — should you choose to wear one — won’t detract from another student’s experience. You don’t want your costume to obstruct the view of the person behind you or cause you to take up three seats in a packed lecture room. Plus, we want YOU to be comfortable. Costumes that are similar to regular street clothes in bulk and agility usually work well. Remember that you may be rushing to eat or get to a class on time, so, when in doubt, wear street clothes.

Also, no matter what you are wearing, be sure to layer. The hotel can run very warm and very cold, sometimes just between one room and the next. Make sure you have a sweater or wrap that you can wear. The hotel can only do so much with the amount of rooms and students we have.

Reminder: Costume College Memberships, Workshop Classes and Tours may NOT be sold or transferred during College.

One of our most important services is that we have the capability to contact the Dean and Hotel Liaison and other key Costume College people.

Sewing Machine Rentals - yes we have them!

If you are unable to bring your own sewing machine, but you need one for class, or you have last minute touches to finish on your gala costume; there will be sewing machines available to rent at the Information Desk.

Please reserve in advance, so that we may coordinate schedules, and have an adequate number of machines.

You may want a little extra time before class to unpack the machine, try a few sample stitches, look through the instruction manual, etc. You may want to consider picking up 30 minutes earlier than your class, and you may need some time after class to get everything in order.

INSPIRATIONS: FROM START TO FINISH! Costume Exhibits

The theme for the 2022 Costume Exhibit will be “Inspirations: From Start to Finish”. We’ll be taking submissions (whole costumes or accessories) of your creations inspired by a movie/TV series, a book, painting, fashion plates, or extant clothing. Show how your costume started from a single thought or idea and grew into a finished outfit! The more detailed and fabulous, the better!

Your submission form will require: •

A written description of how your inspiration started

•

A written description of your process of converting inspiration to final product (a few paragraphs)

•

A photo of your inspiration (which will be displayed with your submission)

•

A photo of the costume(s) and/or accessor(ies) you will be submitting

•

An itemized list of all costume item(s) (i.e. corset, underthings, hats, shoes, gloves, jewelry, etc.)

Exhibitors will bring their costume(s) and/or accessor(ies) to Costume College, and dress the dress form themselves on Thursday, between 7pm-9pm. Our grand opening takes place on Friday at 9am. The dress forms have no heads. Accessory submissions will be displayed on tables. The Exhibit closes on Sunday at 3pm. All submissions must be picked up between 3pm-5pm, no exceptions.

About Costume College Scholarships If you’re a student or traveling by air or just going through a rough time, it can bard to scrape together enough funds to come to Costume College. The Costume Scholarship Fund is here to help with tuition or tuition and one of your hotel nights.

There are several ways to earn a scholarship. You can be a volunteer, win a competition or write an essay.

Service to CGW: CGW awards scholarships to members or volunteers in recognition of outstanding service to the guild. In addition, the Costume College Volunteer with the most volunteer hours during the event is awarded a scholarship. (Costume College Committee Members are not eligible for this award.)

Outreach: CGW awards scholarships at conventions, fairs and other events the hold masquerades or other costume competitions.

Open to the Public

Written Essays: Essay scholarships are awarded by the CGW Scholarship Committee so that the individual may be rewarded for their service to the organization; OR be assisted due to hardship; OR be exposed to resources, gain experience and be encouraged in their costuming life. Scholarships may be awarded based on a combination of these criteria or on a single one (so you don’t need to have financial hardship to win a scholarship, but you could win one based on that). You do not need to be a U.S. resident to apply for a Costume College Scholarship. You must be at least 18 years old when you use an awarded scholarship. Please visit CGW’s website at costumerguild.org for details on when and how to apply for an Essay Scholarship.

Please note that all Costume College 2022 Scholarships have been awarded. Written essay scholarships for future Costume College sessions will be accepted starting on July 1st!

Marketplace I am very excited about the wonderful shopping experience awaiting you this year. Many old favorites will be returning, along with a few new surprises.

Once again, the Marketplace will be hosting the popular Early Bird Shopping Event on Friday afternoon. For a $7 donation benefiting the Costume College Scholarship Fund, eager shoppers can get a head start in The Marketplace from 3:30pm to 6:00pm on Friday. Costume College Check-In If you are returning to Costume College, you will notice several changes to Check-In. In the interest of space, CheckIn will no longer be in the lobby in front of the Information Desk, it will be held in Salon F for students and the Lounge in Hidden Hills for teachers. Masks are required at Check -In, You will be able to choose which swag you want to pick-up along with your The 2022 check-in hours are: registration materials. Mobile App Costume College has an app available for attendees. The app is accessible on both Apple and Android stores.

It is called “CrowdCompass Events” and should be searchable under that name. Once you install the app, run it and search for our event. It’s hidden but should show up when you search using the event password, which is “CostumeCollege2022.” No spaces and capitalization matters. Once you find the event, download it and it should become the default event on the app. The app should have all the event data, including event, classes and teacher information. We will also be updating the app over the weekend as information changes.

Portrait Studio We are pleased to announce a new photographer, Mark Edwards, will be joining us this year as our Studio Photographer. Mark is a full-time photographer specializing in event, portrait, and company rebranding photography, and in his free time he enjoys working on personal projects including classic noir photography and cosplay photographs.

Do It Yourself Photo Booth Should you wish to have a simple backdrop to catch a few camera pics or try out your new fancy camera, our DIY Photo Booth will be up in its usual place outside of Salon D (Costume Exhibits). There will be lights and a backdrop available for anyone to use just outside Salon D in the Hallway. Good for selfies and group shots! This area is not associated with the professional photographer. Ribbons are not required, but please watch out for the electrical cords and hot lights.

The 2022 Lounge hours are: Friday 9am - 5pm, also open during the Friday Night Social Saturday 9am - 11pm Sunday 9am - 11:30am and 5pm - 9pm Hidden Hills

This is a new place for you to sit back, relax, have a glass of lemonade or ice tea, and spread out your sewing or spread out the project from your last class. No need to worry about time lost waiting for an elevator to get to class as all classes are either on the same floor, or up a nearby set of stairs. (Elevators are also close by for those whom stairs are not an option) (The Lounge will be a dedicated place where everyone can remove their masks while actively eating or drinking, and will be gathering in groups. If you are concerned about being in a space where people are not masked, we recommend not visiting the Lounge this year.)

Aside from a place to gather, sew, and snack, what else is happening in the Lounge?

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning, the Lounge will become a Teacher’s Lounge, with coffee, tea and snacks for all Costume College Teachers!

The Lounge will be open to all Costume College attendees from 9am-5pm Friday, 9am-11pm Saturday, and 9am-11:30am and 5pm-9pm on Sunday.

Need a place to put up your feet for a minute?

During this time, the Lounge will also be host to the Portrait Studio! Come, show off your wonders, and have your portrait taken by our photographer (see more details under “Portrait Studio”).

Want to meet our Board Members? During select times Friday-Sunday, our Board Members will host the Lounge, so you can sit, chat, discuss what’s on your mind, or just hang out! Titanic — A Night to Remember Time Traveler’s Gala

The Titanic and its sister ships were known for their immense size and extreme opulence designed for the upper echelon of the wealthy and well-to-do guests aboard this luxury liner. This year at Costume College 2022, with our much anticipated return to an in-person event, we will be getting a glimpse of what these guests might have seen and felt upon entering the First Class dining rooms of the Titanic.

Fine dining, live music, and opportunities to have your photograph taken in front of the Grand Staircase await you! This is the place where your evening finery will help set the scene for an evening in which the feats of mankind’s ingenuity will be celebrated.

We all know that the First Class were not the only passengers on board. This magnificent ship “that not even God himself could sink,” was supposed to be a new beginning for many of the lower deck passengers. Each table will be graced with informational cards about the Titanic and its passengers.

I couldn’t sew all this in my lifetime!” If that describes you and you’re looking for someplace to get rid of some of those boxes of fabric, notions, and costumes that don’t fit anymore, then the Bargain Basement at Costume College 2022 is that place!

The proceeds from our Bargain Basement go to create new scholarships for the following year’s Costume College.

These scholarships help students attend Costume College who otherwise would not be able to come. And because it’s all going for a good cause, you can get donation receipts for tax purposes. However, once an item is donated, it cannot be reclaimed by the donor (unless you come to our sale and buy it, of course!).

Unfortunately, except in rare circumstances, we cannot take anything from anyone before Costume College starts. If you wish to donate but won’t be attending, you can send items with a friend who’s coming. You can also mail packages to Carolyn Richardson, c/o of the Warner Center Marriott Hotel where Costume College is being held, timed to arrive a day or two before the start of the sale on Sunday. Donation receipts can be mailed back. If you have any questions or are looking for a “pony express” for your items, please let us know and we’ll see if we can help with arrangements.

Shopping Procedures on Sunday: Masks are required to be worn while in the Bargain Basement. Because of space constrictions, we must limit the number of people shopping in the Bargain Basement from 7:30am to 10:30am.

Because of complaints of queue jumping from prior years, we will hand out pre-numbered tickets at 6:30am to those waiting in line, one number per person. You must be in line to receive a number to enter, and you must show proof of CoCo attendance to receive a number (i.e., your badge). This will allow shoppers to leave the line to visit the bathroom or Starbucks without losing their place in line. Please line up by number starting at 7:15am to prepare to enter the room. Only CoCo students, teachers, and volunteers will be admitted before 11:00am.

Wheeled carts or rolling luggage cannot be brought into the room. We will hand out large shopping bags to monitor how many people are in the room at any time — personal bags are not allowed. Once your bag is full, you must check out. Stacking items in the room or at the checkout desk is not permitted. You are welcome to join any remaining line and re-enter when the people ahead of you have had their chance. Cash, checks, or credit cards are accepted for payment. Please be courteous of the people still waiting in line and try to do your shopping quickly. It helps if you visit the Bargain Basement ahead of time to see what items are for sale in advance, and where they are located (although we reserve the right to move items around in the room to pack as much into the space as we can).

At 11am, we will start selling large trash-style bags for $5. You may then fill up that bag with ANY remaining item(s).

Volunteer! Don’t forget to volunteer! It’s an enormous job to organize donations for the Bargain Basement, control the crowd during the sale, and we can use all the help we can get. Get a first look at the wonderful items donated by helping us sort and organize!

She doesn’t like him, but they still hunt zombies together despite their differences. For high tea, you can throw on your best afternoon frock, saber, or dagger and join in the hunt to exterminate zombies. Perhaps one or two of our tea guests are here as gentle-people, but are actually zombies in disguise?

Often our Costumer’s Guild West members select to enjoy Costume College as attendees and instructors rather than as vendors since that is their “day or weekend job.” In addition, many of our attendees travel a great distance to attend Costume College, and with current airline regulations are unable to bring enough products to sell at a full weekend marketplace. On the other hand, our attendees wish to have the opportunity to view these goods along with supporting their fellow attendees’ ventures by purchasing items. As it is against Marriott Hotel policy to conduct sales in hotel “bedrooms,” we are hoping that this continued endeavor will make it a win-win scenario for all of our attendees. I mean really, who doesn’t want another opportunity to shop?

At posting time of this Registration Book, the list of Trunk Show sellers has not been finalized. Tours LA Fabric Tour Monday, August 1, 2022, 9am - 4pm Once again, Costume College will be offering a tour of the Fabric District in Downtown Los Angeles. For those of you who have never been, it is an experience equaled only by Aladdin’s bazaar. There is hardly a fabric, trim or tool you can imagine that you can’t find there (and you don’t even need a magic lamp!)

An air-conditioned bus will transport you from and back to the hotel on Monday, Aug. 1. The bus leaves the hotel promptly at 9 AM and will leave town to go back to the hotel promptly at 4 PM. As it is an over the road bus, there will be plenty of room for all of your purchases (or your luggage if you are planning to head straight to the airport on your own from downtown.) The bus parks all day in a centrally located place so that you can store your purchases while you continue shopping or if you would just like a comfortable place to sit down and take a break. Light snacks and water are provided on the bus.

Prior to the tour, you will receive a Native Guide Book listing the names, addresses, and variety of items sold in most of the larger stores.The book will also contain the names and addresses for some of the local eateries.

Classes! A Student’s Guide All classes require that masks be worn at all times. If you need to remove your mask for any reason, please step into the hallways or outside to do so.

The schedule in your conference mini-guide is as accurate as we can make it. Any programming changes from this book will be noted in the Program Book (which you will get at Costume College), mini-guide, at the Information Desk, and will be reflected in the Costume College app.

All classes end 15 minutes prior to scheduled end time, to allow for class change over. So, if a class is scheduled to be an hour, it’s actually 45 minutes.

Students sign up for Workshops in advance on a first-come first-serve basis, about a month after Registration opens. You will be able to sign up for Workshop classes through a form in the Costumer’s Guild West website, like your Costume College Registration Form. Registered students will be emailed a link to the form before the form goes live. Only registered Costume College students will be able to sign up for Workshop classes.

These classes fill up fast, but students do drop classes, and so some seats will be available at Late Registration (onsite at Costume College).

Any registered student of Costume College can attend as many of these classes as they can fit into the weekend!

Class Formats: Lecture- The teacher “talks” to the students and may illustrate with PowerPoint presentation, slides, props, charts, or actual items.

Workshop- The students experience “hands-on” learning by performing the techniques being instructed.

These have a class size limit, and a fee for materials.

Panel- With a panel, a group of “panelists” sits at the head of the class and provides information and a free exchange of ideas amongst themselves with feedback from the students on a specific topic.

The moderator of the panels controls the discussion by keeping the panelists on the topic and should the discussion become too heated, the moderator will control this as well. Panels are open to all registered students, but are limited by room capacity.

As a student, please keep comments, personal stories, and/or experiences to a minimum, unless requested by the teacher. We are all here because we love costuming, and all things costume related. While sometimes as a student we have information or knowledge we feel is pertinent to a class, it is most respectful to both the teachers and your fellow students to wait until the class is over and speak one-on-one with the teacher.

This Circular Regency Purse Kit will include an embroidered medallion digitized by TheVictorianRomanian based on an extant purse. The pattern and instructions are by Black Orchid Atelier.

These three types of ribbon flowers were a tool in every 19th century milliner’s business. They are simple to make, but give really impressive results.

These types of ribbon flowers can adorn shoes, garments, hats, accessories, and decor.

Huck Lace: An Interesting Surface Embellishment Priscilla Atwell 1:30:00 PM- 4:30:00 PM 3hr Class Type: Workshop Patio Huck lace is a surface embellishment that is only sewn on the surface of the fabric, unlike most embroidery that goes through the fabric. Learn the secret! You will take home a ‘kitchen towel’ decorated with huck lace. The type we are talking about is best known as Huck Embroidery or Swedish Weaving, for the specialty fabric, Huck, which it is stitched on.

Swedish Weaving was at its height of popularity in the 1930s and 1940s in the United States.

Guest Teachers: Quincy R. Lehr & Madame Askew Quincy R. Lehr earned his Ph.D. In history from Columbia University in 2006 and has taught at the secondary and tertiary level in the U.S. and Ireland. He is also the author of four books of poetry and has been published as both a historian and poet in Europe, North America, and Australia.

Madame Askew is a time traveling tea aficionado, obsessed with tea, fashion & the proper uses for headgear. When Madame is not preoccupied with tea, she operates a small atelier where she creates fanciful and charming bespoke garments, underpinnings, and hats for discerning time travelers.

She is also quite delighted to teach sewing workshops and to host regular live sewing teatorials and sew-alongs in her virtual tea parlour. Whilst Madame has lost all sense of time spent within her workshop between time traveling adventures, she is most certain that it has been less than a century but more than a minute.

Yosa Addiss Yosa Addiss became a historic costumer after pursuing a degree in costume design. She created one of the first websites for custom-made costume gowns in the late 1990s.

Yosa is a lifelong fan of historical costume. She finds something wonderful in every era, especially if the garments have pockets! Her preferred mediums are sewing, machine embroidery, and hand-crafted embellishments.

Priscilla Atwell Priscilla Atwell has an AS in Fashion Design. She has been involved in textiles for over 60 years. She costumed stage productions for 15 years and worked the Renaissance Pleasure Faire for over 40 years demonstrating fiber production, spinning, weaving, lace making and knitting. She has expanded into Victorian Fashion, finishing over 10 ensembles and all the underpinnings from the Civil War thru the Bustle Era. She has taught classes on undersleeves, frogs and knots, and hardanger and bobbin lace at past Costume Colleges. She says that someday she will organize her textile items, but until then she’ll teach.

Sara Bacon Sara Bacon works as a Motion Picture Costumers Local 705 Draper/ Stitcher in the film and TV industry on shows such as Star Trek Picard, Star Wars Mandalorian, Marvel’s Antman and the Wasp, Raising Hope, America’s Next Top Model, and more. She made custom ballet costumes for ten years prior to that.

For her, Costume College is summer camp for people who love to sew!

Lilli Barrett Lilli Barrett’s mom taught her to sew and knit at 5. She began designing and making doll clothes and proceeded to baby layettes. At 12, she began making clothes for her mom, sister and herself. She costumed high school plays while a student and later for Community Theatre. She has a degree in History/ Fine Arts-Theatre and did her graduate work in Women’s Studies/History. She has worked professionally as a costumer for several of the smaller contemporary dance companies and experimental theaters.

Elisa Bechtel Elisa Bechtel is a self-taught historical costumer and a member of the SCA, where she is a costuming and period construction apprentice. She is a historian by training, but also spent time working in a costume shop for a living history program, making 18th-19th century style clothing.

Elisa is also a partner of Thimble & Plume, a historical patterning company, costubers, and haberdashers.

Kyla Benson Kyla Benson is the Department Chair of the Fashion Program at Santa Ana College (sac.edu/fashion).

She has recently revamped SAC’s fashion program with her industry connections from her tenure as a designer in L.A. and Orange County’s apparel industry. Kyla has designed for large companies including Hurley, O’Neill, and Fox Racing. She has also started small businesses where her work has been seen in magazines including InStyle and US Weekly and worn by celebrities such as Drew Barrymore and Alicia Keys’ baby son.

Bridget Bradley-Scaife Bridget Bradley-Scaife started costuming at age 12 when she got involved in Renaissance Faires.

Since then, she has expanded her love of costuming to all time periods, but currently her focus is on the Victorian and Colonial eras.

She is an active member of the Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild, a fabric enthusiast and buyer for Renaissance Fabrics, and the owner of North & South Emporium (NorthSouthEmporium.com), which specializes in mid-Victorian jewelry and accessories.

Amy Carpenter Amy Carpenter has worked in the collectibles market creating fine art prototypes and samples for domestic and overseas manufacturing for 12 years. Her main focus over 15 years as a leather crafter has been manufacturing high end leather costume accessories, pop-culture fashion items, and leather project kits.

She is currently creating one-of-a-kind pieces for the entertainment industry for such companies as HBO and Disney.

Brayton Carpenter Brayton Carpenter has been creating costumes for over 34 years. He has worked in a variety of textiles, leather, metal, and synthetics.

His portfolio showcases a range of genres and his work has been featured on stage, screen, film, in print media, and at museums. He has created prototypes for collectible companies. These days his main focus is on leathercraft; designing and manufacturing high end leather costume accessories, pop-culture fashion items, and leather project kits and tools.

Francis Classe Francis Classe has been costuming and making shoes for over fifteen years. He has intensely studied raised heels and is the author of “Chopine, Zoccolo, and Other Raised Heel Construction” (www. raisedheels.com). Although he specializes in the second half of the 16th century, he is interested in all manner of costuming and shoemaking, both historical and fantasy. He was the designer for “Stratford,” the Renaissance high heel offering

by American Duchess.

Sahrye Cohen Sahrye Cohen is a costumer, maker and cosplayer who specializes in projects that combine traditional techniques, like sewing, with electronics, microcontrollers, laser cutting, and 3D printing. She is a co-author of the book “Make It, Wear It: Wearable Electronics for Makers, Crafters and Cosplayers”. Sahrye teaches workshops in cosplay and electronics at DragonCon, Maker Media, Maker Faires, Costume College, and at many other conventions and makerspaces. Her couture Fashion Tech with Amped Atelier (www.ampedatelier.com) can be seen on the runways in San Francisco, California, Calgary, Canada, and Shenzhen, China.

Olivia Competente Olivia Competente is a jeweler (Jewels By Olivia) and a native of San Francisco. With a love of all things jewelry she is versed in metal smithing and, her first love, fused dichroic glass. Olivia now teaches all things jewelry with her mother, Dina Competente, at her own studio in San Francisco. She loves imparting her knowledge to all her students.

Gigi Coulson Gigi Coulson is a retired sociologist/ biologist, living historian, historical costumer, storyteller, traveler, and dabblist. She has been researching the lives of historical women of the Italies and teaching/reenacting pre-18thcentury Italy (Veneto, Tuscany, and Emilia-Romagna) for the past 12 years.

She shares her research on her blog (labelladonna.net) and provides public education via her @reenactorsofcolor and @labelladonnhistory Instagram accounts. In addition to historical costuming she loves wine, sharing her research, dressing up in silk gamurre, and RV adventures with her husband and cane corso dogs, Titan and Zoe. Her book, Caterina Sforza’s Gli Experimenti: A Translation, a translation of 15th-century medicinal and beauty recipes, is available on Amazon.

Rory Cunningham A professional costumer working in Hollywood for over 30 years, Rory Cunningham is the owner of Bill Hargate Costumes Inc., a Union Custom Costume house specializing in Film and Television costumes from the distant past to the far off future.

Many costumes created by his company have also been featured in museum exhibits.

Kristen Darville-Foggie As a Former History teacher and history lover, Kristen DarvilleFoggie has been sewing for over 20 years. She has been sewing for others for many years via her sewing business, Black Orchid Atelier (www.blackorchidatelier. com). Over the past year she has embarked on a virtual costuming and sewing program, she wanted to share her knowledge and help others learn and connect with other talented costumers and makers. Heather Dill-Tullo Heather Dill-Tullo has been sewing and crafting since she was a kid, but her costuming journey started in college with her first Renaissance faire costume. What started as a necessity has grown into a branching, twenty year passion ranging from historical and screen recreations, to leather craft and prop fabrication, to cosplay and incorporating electronics into her creations. She loves sharing her skills and knowledge with others as much as learning something new.

Sandra Durbin Sandra Durbin has been teaching for 50 years and sewing for 65 years. She is an award winning fiber artist and costumer. She has taught at Costume College, San Diego County Fair, WonderCon, Wild West Steampunk Con, San Diego Steampunk Expo, and San Diego Creative Stitchery Guild.

She teaches embroidery, millinery, ribbon work, leather flowers, sewing, fusing fabrics with a soldering iron, and up-cycling fabrics, clothing, embroidery threads, from thrift stores, into something new. Her motto is “Reuse, recycle, and repurpose creatively” Phillippe Jose Felix-Del Olmo Phillippe Jose Felix-Del Olmo is a native of Spain. He is a Culinary Institute of America accredited Chef and Cordon Bleu accredited saucier. A lover of all things historical and food, Phillippe loves to spread the deliciousness of Northern Iberian Cuisine and history.

Danelle Garrison Danelle Garrison is the Volunteer and Education Program Manager at Heritage Square Museum, a living history museum in Los Angeles, an avid costume enthusiast, and lover of animals. Her favorite eras to costume are Late Victorian through the 1950s -- especially the 1930s. She has been a part of CGW for 4 years and is currently serving on the board as Vice President. She enjoys bourbon, long walks on the beach, and Addams Family TV Show reruns.

Liz Gerds Liz Gerds has been fascinated by costumes and dress-up since childhood and made her first costumes during her high school years. She has created costumes for stage, historical recreationists, equestrian competition, and weddings. Her professional portfolio includes working for UCLA, Loyola Marymount University, AlterYears, FarthingalesLA, Boss Wench, Real Pirates, and others.

Liz is a Past President of the CGW and has been involved with Costume College from the beginning, as a committee member, teacher, and volunteer.

Mary Gobet Mary Gobet has enjoyed teaching at costume & non-costume events through the years including Costume College 2021. As a lifelong collector & restorer of antique clothing & purses, she has a special focus on beadwork & embellishments. Being a past president of the Portland Bead Society, as well as other historical organizations, has allowed Mary to share her extensive antique purse & clothing collection on many diverse venues and events. Tracey Gorin Tracey Gorin has been beading and crafting since she was a young girl, but didn’t begin costuming until 2003.

Lia Hansen Lia Hansen has been costuming since 1977 and teaching the craft since 2000. She loves the research and craft sides of costuming. She has done work at the Old Globe and is a founding member of American Coast Theater Company and has been teaching the craft at Vanguard University since 2000.

Emily Henry Emily Hery is a long time costumer with over a decade of sewing experience.

Mostly in the realm of cosplay and lolita fashion, they are starting to explore historical costuming more and are excited to meet everyone at Costume College this year.

Oh, and she is currently the Director of Asset Management for Prop Store of London located in the Los Angeles area, was Costume College Dean in 2009 and 2019, and has been on the CoCo committee longer than her daughter has been alive.

Christopher Hoage Christopher Hoage is a longtime amateur costumer and historian (specializing in 20th century military and steampunk for the most part), and recipient of a scholarship to the 2013 Costume College. Mela Hoyt-Heydon Mela Hoyt-Heydon is a union costume designer, retired Professor/ Chairman of the Theatre Arts Department at Fullerton College, founding member of CGW and Costume College, two-time Dean of Costume College, past President of CGW, and a member of Costume Society of America, USITT, and the Smithsonian’s Copp Family Textiles Research Team. She owns Atelier Mela (ateliermela.net) which creates millinery and costumes for the entertainment industry. In 2020, her team’s hats and “shop dressing” were featured in the opening of Tokyo Disneyland’s New Fantasyland. Mela received her MFA in design from the University of California, Irvine, studied art history at King’s College, London, and trained under Rose Corey, milliner to the Queen Mum in London.

Lalena Hutton Lalena Hutton currently works as a theater costume technician as a cutter/draper, but she also is active as a historical costumer and a reenactor. Mia Jackson Mia Jackson does all kinds of creative stuff. Organizing shows, she co-leads Underground Renaissance where they recreate a 1920’s jazz club. Besides working on costumes, she runs Authentik Afrikan (www. authentikafrikan.com), designing with bold African prints.

Shelly Jackson Shelly Jackson is a buckram and wire milliner from Reno, Nevada. She has been sewing her whole life, and sewing hats for nearly a decade.

Laura Katz Laura Katz started sewing originally to be able to have fun swishy skirts to dance in. Since then she’s made historical costumes, cosplay, embroidery projects, and quilts. Loving challenges means that Laura has delved into custom dye work, customizing embroidery fibers to hand stitch the perfect applique, and painting premade appliques to suit a project. She follows the mantra of “because it’s pretty and I like it,” as a motivation for creating new things and is excited to both share her acquired skills and knowledge, as well as learn from others.

Erika Kawaguchi Erika Kawaguchi is a designer, cosplayer, vintage kimono collector, and all around goblin. She comes from generations of tailors and textile vendors in Hawai’i. Though she learned to sew as a toddler, she found her passion for sewing when she began cosplaying and realized she could sew preposterous things and fulfill childhood dreams of impractical gowns and capes. Erika also holds degrees in human rights, political science, and psychology, and has experience in anti-human trafficking legislative advocacy, inclusion and diversity, and human rights education. Becca Konieczny Becca Konieczny’s passions in life are 19th Century jewelry, needlework of all kinds, and dogs. Becca especially loves jewelry from the 1870s. She has studied needlework at the Royal School of Needlework, the American Needlepoint Guild, and the Embroiderers’ Guild of America.

Val LaBore Valarie LaBore has been attending Costume College since 2003, when she was new to historical sewing techniques. She loved finding that there were other people just as crazy as she was. She began teaching and loves to share what she learns on her blog, Time Traveling in Costume (timetravelingincostume.blogspot. com). She runs the Facebook group, Historical Pattern Reviews 1700-1919, is a member of CGW and the Orange County Costume Guild, was Dean of Costume College in 2018, is a past-President of the San Diego Costume Guild, is an honorary member of SITU, and is a representative of the San Diego History Center.

Regina Lawson Regina Lawson came up costuming high school theater productions and rock bands. She found her heart in Historical Clothing, making English, German, and especially, researching and trying to reproduce Irish and Highland Scots clothing from the 16th century. She has been doing THAT since 1986.

Lana Lily Lana Lily is a lover of history with a passion for detailed research of historical clothing. She received a degree in Fashion Design from FIDM and has more than 20 years experience as a historical reenactor.

Rebecca Maiten Rebecca Maiten is an actor and costumer living in the Seattle area, and has been fascinated with historical fashions for as long as she can remember. She started sewing in high school, and has been creating historical costumes for over 10 years. Rebecca loves sewing costumes of any era, from the 17th century through Edwardian, and has also dabbled in cosplay. Rebecca runs the Youtube channel, Lady Rebecca Fashions (youtube.com/ ladyrebeccafashions), and is also one of the founders of the Puget Sound Historical Costumers Guild. Sandy Manning Sandy Manning has been involved in costuming for a very long time. She began by making costumes for her dolls when she was young and graduated to making her own costumes when she was involved with theater. She enjoys learning more about all aspects of historical and modern costuming. She lives in Alaska and works in the Bush away from most cities.

Sue McDonald Sue McDonald is a long-time seamstress and has been making and wearing period costumes for over 30 years. She has a special interest in Victorian and Edwardian attire and makes many costumes for the reenactment community in Prescott, Arizona where she lives. Sue has taught a variety of classes at Costume College, and is excited to share her costuming tips and techniques again in 2022.

Natalie Meyer Natalie Meyer has been attending Costume College since 1994. She has been Dean twice and has been teaching since 2001. She learned the basics of hand sewing when she was 5, was making her own clothes by the time she was 12, and began serious costuming when she became a docent at Heritage Square Museum in Los Angeles in 1993.

Jess Miller Jess Miller has been involved with costuming since discovering the SCA, the Renaissance Faire, and the science fiction fandom all in the same year. She holds a degree in art with an emphasis on textiles and did further course work in Anthropology, which serves only to make her more confused. She is a past Dean of Costume College, and loves to have long conversations about her hobby.

Ed Morlan Ed Morlan started costuming without realizing it by designing and sewing his own gear for military trainings and finding his way to an occasional movie set where he met a group of guys who managed to get him to a real reenactment. Ever since he has been very involved in costuming.

He runs his own sutler store at reenactments, hand-making both wood and leather products. He’s honed his leather skills and enjoys teaching CoCo. Ed is a civil war reenactor, 13th century longbow archer, Rev War Longhunter, and dabbles in Roman, Greek, WW2 Navy, Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Jenn Mulvey Jennifer Mulvey has been a part of the costuming hobby for over 10 years, where she has served on both the Costume College Committee and the CGW, Inc. Board of Directors. She enjoys all aspects of costuming from historical Civil War reenacting to sci-fi / fantasy. Jennifer is a “certified” friend maker and loves to welcome new people in the costuming world, so she has previously hosted the Freshman Orientation. Never claiming to be an expert, she is always glad to lend a hand whenever a costume is in need!

Carolyn Richardson Carolyn Richardson has been costuming for herself for about 40 years, originally sewing costumes for the SCA and then later branching out into other periods. She has taught numerous times at Costume College in the past and is a self-described “organizer-aholic”. When she’s not making costumes or indulging in other hobbies, she docents at the Getty Center. Carolyn has been working in the income tax field since 1984.

Francesca Romito Francesca Romito is a librarian who studies historical dress and customs.

She is also trained in archives and preservation for paper and textiles. She was born in the United States, but is also a native Polish speaker and has been studying and researching the history of Polish folk clothing for the past year. Before, she spent a lot of her time finishing her Masters degree, and using any spare time she could manage studying Victorian and Edwardian dress along with Scottish 17th century dress.

Donna Scarfe Donna Scarfe has attended CoCo since 1996 and has taught since 1998. She specializes in millinery of the Renaissance, but works with all periods including contemporary fashion hats. She took two short courses in England to hone her skills and believes you can never have too many feathers! She travels the Midwest Faires vending as Fyne Hats By Felicity (www.fynehatsbyfelicity.com) and also sells through her Etsy shop. Donna is also a professional actress and ASL interpreter.

Caroline Smeby Caroline Smeby has been costuming since the early 2000s and enjoys competing at events such as Costume-Con and San Diego Comic-Con. This is her second Costume College and she looks forward to learning and sharing at this year’s event.

Crystal Taggart Crystal Taggart has been designing since her Barbies needed Victorian gowns. She paid her way to a Biology degree with her sewing skills, working at a ballroom dance costume manufacturer. Years after she graduated, she was still finding glitter in strange places. For the past fourteen years she has owned her own costume creation company, Crystal’s Idyll (crystalsidyll.com), specializing in historically inspired fantasy accents and accessories. Her work has been seen on big and small screens, theaters, Sci-Fi Conventions, and anywhere fabulous people gather around the world. Her first love in the costume world is hats, the bigger the better.

Lady Toxie Born in NY but meant to exist in Los Angeles, Lady Toxie creates things she wishes to see or experience in the world. In addition to costuming, she also has a background in fine art, sculpture, art history, & animation that lends its interests to costuming. Much of her work is about reconnecting with her Egyptian heritage while in diaspora & other times it is to experience history/ story in someone’s shoes. Her work has been showcased in short films, competitions, and publications. About Costume College® Costume College is an annual three-day costuming arts conference created and produced by Costumer’s Guild West, Inc. Costume College is a welcoming and non-competitive environment where attendees share and disseminate information/skills.

We offer lectures, workshops and demos on all things costuming: from general sewing (pattern grading, setting sleeves, etc.) to historical construction methods (corsetry, petticoats, etc.) to time period overview classes to science fiction/fantasy costume construction.

All of our classes are taught by volunteers who enjoying sharing their knowledge on a particular topic. Teacher volunteers come from our membership, local costumers and costume designers, industry personnel, costume related business owners, craftspeople specializing in costume related crafts, cosplayers, costume researchers, dress historians and sewing specialists. Invited guest teachers are usually experts in their field and are usually selected based upon their expertise tying in with the theme or bonus track for that particular year.

Along with the opportunity to learn new skills, we offer our attendees several social gatherings to show off their creations! We host a Pool Party, a Friday Social, a Gala Dinner & Dance, and an Afternoon Tea (the Gala and the Tea each have a separate admission).

We also have a Marketplace filled with fabulous vendors who cater to costumers and an Exhibit Room filled with costumes created by our attendees. Both the Marketplace and Exhibit Room are open to the public and do not require a separate admission.

Costume College is the perfect opportunity to meet people who share a love of costuming!

About Costumers Guild West Costumer’s Guild West, Inc. (CGW) is a 501c3, non-profit, volunteer-operated, educational organization dedicated to the art of costuming. We welcome all levels and styles of costumers, whether professional or hobbyist; novice, or master. We are here to encourage, nurture, and educate those who are creating and researching costuming arts including but not exclusive to historical dress, cosplay, and entertainment costuming, encompassed in a safe and supportive environment.

Located in sunny Southern California, our vision is to fill an educational void and encourage hands-on learning in all aspects of the art of costuming. We host lectures and workshops throughout the year; along with tours of costume exhibits and various costumed social events. In addition, we help encourage learning about the costuming arts by working with local museums to sponsor fashion shows and exhibits.

We are the host organization for Costume College®, an annual three-day costuming arts conference. Costume College is a welcoming and non-competitive environment where attendees share and disseminate information/ skills. We maintain a Costume College Scholarship program to assist beginning costumers or those in financial need or those who have served CGW. Costume College scholarships may also be awarded during masquerades at local conventions and the costume contest at the Los Angeles County Fair.

CGW is governed by our Board of Directors. The 9-member Board of Directors is comprised of volunteers from our membership who are elected annually at our Annual Membership Meeting. Our Board of Directors meets bimonthly to oversee the planning of events and the general operations of the organization.

All of our events are planned and organized by volunteers, the smaller of which generally require only couple of volunteers to put together. However, our annual conference, Costume College is planned and organized by a dedicated committee of 30+ volunteers, headed by the Dean and Assistant Dean. If you are interested in volunteering, we will be happy to hear from you.

Costume College Policies Conferences bring a large group of diverse people together. Even though we all have a love of costumes in common, we come from varying backgrounds. Remember that someone that you see only once or twice a year or have only just met, may have a different comfort level – verbally, visually, and physically – than you do. Please note, these policies are subject to change at any time without notice.

Safety Issues for Conventions We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time at Costume College. The world has become unpredictable as people are acting out in violent manners due to domestic and terror related issues. Large venues can be targets of these events. Your leadership wanted to share ideas with you in case an event like this happens at Costume College or any gathering you may be attending.

If you are in a situation: RUN: Know where the exits are at the event and have several different escape routes in mind in case your 1st choice is blocked.

Once you have reached a safe place away from the incident, call “911” and give Law Enforcement any information that could help First Responders (location, number of suspect(s), suspect(s) description, weapons, any injuries).

HIDE & BARRICADE: If you are unable to exit safely, find a room that can be locked from the inside. Put furniture/items blocking the door. Turn off the lights. Turn off cell phones. Be quiet. Wait till Law Enforcement arrives to escort you to safety.

FIGHT: If confronted with a person trying to harm you, you need to fight for your life. Use anything available to defend/ protect yourself (chairs, books, lamps). Control the hand with the weapon. Work as a team to control the suspect. We have not received any threats against our group and do not anticipate you needing to use these tactics but they are good safety precautions to keep in mind. Have a great time at Costume College.

Minor Policy All Costume College attendees under the age of 18 must present a signed permission form from a parent or guardian to attend. If under the age of 16, the attendee must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is a registered Costume College attendee to all classes.

Minors who are 16 or 17 do not need to have a parent or guardian attend all the same classes with them, but a parent or guardian must be at the hotel at all times while the minor is in the hotel.

Any attendee under 18 who wishes to attend a Tour must be accompanied by an adult (additional fees will apply).

Weapons Policy Costumes sometimes come in the form of characters with weapons, and in many cases, these weapons look quite real.

Convention operations prefers that these items be peace bonded. A peace bond is a very visible lock or tie on a realistic looking weapon to make clear to security and to police that it is not intended to be used for violent purposes. The peace bond will usually come in the form of a zip tie over the trigger such that it couldn’t be pulled or holding a bladed weapon in the sheath. If you have a costume with a realistic-looking weapon, please stop into Ops to have them check it.

• All weapons must conform to state and federal law.

• All weapons must be non-functional.

• Weapons may not be pointed at another person except in a non-threatening manner for the purposes of exhibition or photographs.

• Weapons or Costumes that are deemed by Ops to be a safety hazard for any reason will be banned.

• Use of a weapon in an inappropriate, negligent, or threatening manner is forbidden and may result in suspension of membership.

Dress Code When you are in classes, you don’t need to wear a costume, as they can be a distraction to other students and keep you from getting the most out of your class. Dress for comfort. It is always recommended that you have a sweater, jacket, or wrap.

Hotels can get very cold.

When donning a costume or deciding what to wear to an event, in the hallways, and public spaces, try to think of Costume College as a PG-13 event. There will be guests in the hotel who are not a part of our event.

Anti-harassment Any action or behavior that causes significant interference with convention operations, excessive discomfort to other attendees, or adversely affects the convention’s relationship with its guests, its venues or the public is strictly forbidden and may result in permanent suspension of membership.

What is harassment?

Harassment is generally any behavior that causes discomfort or alarms or threatens another person or group. Here are some examples of harassment: • Offensive verbal comments about: 9 Race 9 Color 9 Religion (includes religious dress and grooming practices) 9 Sex/gender (includes pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and/ or related medical conditions) 9 Gender identity, gender expression 9 Sexual orientation 9 Marital status 9 Medical Condition 9 Military or veteran status 9 National origin 9 Ancestry 9 Disability (mental and physical including HIV/AIDS, cancer, and genetic characteristics) 9 Genetic information 9 Physical appearance or body size • Sustained disruption of classes, talks or other events • Leering, staring or suggestive gestures • Stalking or following someone around a public area without their consent • Repeated requests for dates or requests for sexual favors • Showing sexual images or carrying out sexual activities in public spaces • Epithets, slurs, negative stereotyping, offensive jokes or offensive visual materials related to a protected characteristic • Any written, visual, or graphic material that denigrates or shows hostility or aversion to an individual or group because of a protected characteristic • Photographing or recording someone when you have been asked not to • Uninvited physical contact, including touching, grabbing, patting, pinching, hugging, kissing • Threatening to physically attack someone • Sexual assault • Graphic verbal commentaries about an individual’s body, sexually degrading words used to describe an individual, or obscene letters, notes, or invitations • Harassing communications via letters, phone calls, e-mails, text messaging or social media • Prohibited harassment includes gender-based harassment of an individual of the same sex as the harasser • Not wearing your mask properly in places where you are required to do so. Refusing to wear a mask while in spaces where you are required to do so.

What do I do if I am being harassed?

In some cases you may find the harassment stops if you clearly say ‘no’ or ‘please leave me alone’, or simply walk away. We would appreciate it if a Costume College Committee or CGW Board member was informed right away to help us identify any repeat offenders. If you continue to be harassed, don’t hesitate to ask for the Dean or the President. We will mediate the situation, help you contact venue security or law enforcement, or otherwise assist you to feel safe during the conference. Costume College will not retaliate against an individual for coming forward with a complaint of harassment.

What should I do if I see someone else being harassed?

Ask the person being harassed if they are okay. Offer to help them find an appropriate board or committee member to report the problem to, or stay with them while someone else finds help. During the registration process on site, look for the photos of board and committee members, so you will know who can help in case such a need arises.

What can I do if someone accuses me of harassment?

Participants asked to stop harassing behavior must comply immediately. If someone makes a complaint against you, listen, and be aware that your actions may not have come off as you intended them. If this has occurred, be prepared to apologize, sincerely and without qualifiers. Please understand that, in such a situation, the safety of guests is the highest priority.

Costume College Policies, continued Photography Costume College engages one or more professional photographers who act in an official capacity for the convention. Official Roving Photographers take candid pictures at events, classes, and in public spaces. Official Event Photographers take posed portraits of attendees in a designated area. Candid photos are available after the convention and digital copies are included as part of your registration fee. Posed portrait prints are available on demand at the event for a small fee.

As at any public event, photographs of participants and their guests are taken and posted online. There are so many people taking photos that there is a real possibility that your photograph may be taken by Costume College photographers or attendees and thereafter posted on the Web. By attending Costume College, you give your consent to the posting of such photographs by us or others and waive all rights and claims with respect to the posting of such photographs.

While we have no control over other peoples’ websites, Costumer’s Guild West, Inc. does not list names with the photos on our website. If you would like a photo posted on the Costume College or CGW website removed, please contact the Web Team at costumecollegeweb@gmail.com and it will be taken down.

It is harassment to continue to photograph someone who specifically asks you not to take photographs of them or their belongings. If someone asks you not to take such a photo, please comply with their request. For more information regarding our harassment policies see our harassment policy.

Unofficial photographers (that is, photographers not officially engaged by Costume College, who may or may not be registered attendees) are allowed at the event. Unofficial photography is limited to the public areas of the convention with the exception of the marketplace. No unofficial/professional photography is allowed in the marketplace due to space/crowd flow issues.

Unofficial photography may not disrupt events or impede the flow of foot traffic. Unofficial photographers may not monopolize areas intended to be used as photo ops by all attendees.

Unofficial photographers are not required to purchase registration to Costume College, although they are welcome to do so. An unofficial photographer who has paid registration is welcome to enjoy the event but must follow our general event policies. Unofficial photographers with paid registration may take pictures inside classrooms for personal use only, and then only with the express permission of the individual teacher. An unofficial photographer without paid registration may operate in Costume College’s public spaces only.

Unofficial photographers may not use any equipment other than their camera such as tripods, stand lights, free standing light rings, etc. while taking photographs at Costume College.

Unofficial photographers may not charge money at Costume College or in the hotel for their pictures, though they may hand out business cards to attendees. No financial transactions for goods or services may take place between attendees (whether registered or not) onsite.

Unofficial photographers may be asked to cease taking photos or to leave at any time.

Disability Accommodation It is the policy of Costumer’s Guild West, Inc. to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We will not discriminate against any attendee of Costume College®. We will also reasonably accommodate all attendees with disabilities unless the accommodations would cause an undue hardship to Costumer’s Guild West or the Marriott Warner Center in Woodland Hills.

If you require an accommodation for special needs covered under the ADA, you must notify Costumer’s Guild West and/ or the Marriott Warner Center no later than six (6) weeks before Costume College. The person you need to notify of your special needs is the Hotel Liaison of Costume College by email at cocohotelliaison@yahoo.com.

Additionally, we will keep the information regarding your condition and special needs confidential. Only those members of the Costumer’s Guild West and the Marriott Warner Center who are in a “need to know” position will be informed of your situation.

Service Animals Accommodation Dogs are the only service animals allowed at Costume College. If you are bringing a service dog, please notify our Hotel Liaison at cocohotelliaison@yahoo.com, and the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills no later than six (6) weeks before Costume College.

Your dog will be allowed to be with you in most areas of the hotel, and Costume College, including classrooms, restrooms, the restaurant, lobby, Marketplace, Exhibits, and pool area, etc. However, due to health and safety laws you cannot bring the dog into the pools, or in the gym area.

The handler must maintain control over the dog at all times, either physically by leash, harness or tether, or by voice, signal, or other means. If the dog becomes uncontrollable (including repeated barking), or is not housebroken, the dog must leave the event.

The dog must always be with the handler and cannot be left behind in the hotel room.

If you do bring a support dog, please be considerate and understanding of others’ allergies to your dog, or not liking or being afraid of dogs.

Emotional support, therapy, comfort and companion dogs are not considered service animals, and will not be allowed at Costume College. No other animals of any kind will be allowed at Costume College at any time.

Please contact the Warner Center Marriott at Woodland Hills to discuss their policy regarding service dogs.
