Conclusion 25
Each year at the HZ University of Applied Sciences (HZ), the Civil Engineering Students are required to work in teams and solve existing problems in the given study cases These projects relate to both the Netherlands and Civil Engineering. They are meant for the students to start shaping the mindset for a future job in the engineering field. This means that the teams are made of three to five students with each a role assigned as would be in the reality
In addition to the main project, sub projects are implemented in order to cover every course offered in the Bachelor of Civil Engineering.
The HZ requires the student to finish the project in one semester, hence six projects have been complete over the course of three years
Follows a description of the projects and sub projects done in educational path at HZ.
Parking Lot Building Design
Middelburg, NL University’s 1st Project
Based on the analysis of the situation and on the Multicriteria Analysis the group decided to create a new parking building in front of the University’s building. In addition, since a great criterion for this project was sustainability and innovation, an implementation of a natural and recreational park area has been designed on the roof of the parking spot.
The software ‘EPANET’ has been used to perform hydraulic and water quality simulations of drinking water distribution system in Middelburg.
A first assignment on AutoCAD has been done.
Hydraulic Structure in Canal Design Vlissingen, NL University’s 2nd Project
After analysing the solutions proposed in the past from the municipality of Vlissingen, my team and I came up with three solutions: Aeration pump Labyrinth weir Nanobubbles
The design of a temporary pedestrian bridge has been performed . This bridge was (hypothetically) located on the canal of the main project’s study case.
The design of the previous bridge required an implementation of soil to provide stability to the overall situations. The design of a retaining wall has been provided and its stability has been analysed.
The group worked on creating a ‘green, self sufficient port of the future’ , by proposing different features.
The design of a road connecting the new harbour terminal to the existing primary roads has been designed.
Since the area taken to construct the harbour was initially a space for agriculture, the design of a nearby agricultural field has been proposed. This includes the irrigation as well as the drainage system required to achieve optimal production of the different crops.
In this sub project the required calculations to build a reinforced concrete bridge for both bikes and pedestrians have been performed.
Together with the previous sub project, the study of the foundation of the bridge has been done, to provide a safe design and plan for its foundations. The conclusion of the report is that according to the Hand and Dsheet calculations the sheet pile wall won’t achieve any failure through its lifetime.
The design of an energy island has been proposed, this would act as flood defence, as positioned close by the interested coast prone to flooding. In addition, to utilize the island in the best way possible, implementations have been included:
• Renewable energy production and testing → wave energy
• A friendly environment for flora and fauna to flourish → natural parks and sanctuaries
• An income coming from the implemented third purpose facilities → surf and recreational beach
To provide a safe design of the island previously mentioned, the island itself needed to have its own safety system against flooding. The group decided to create dikes all around the island, to provide full safety. The environment and weather have been analysed to determine the most attacked location, due to waves and wind, to provide the appropriate dike design. This enabled the analysis of the other locations on the island for the appropriate dikes designs for each section of the defence system.
A steel warehouse has been designed. The different failure mechanisms of such structures have been analysed as well as the full design has been provided.
Middelburg, NL University’s 5th Project
The design and structural calculations for a flat slab floor have been performed. On the side the sketch of the reinforcement required.
Middelburg, NL University’s 6th Project
The design and probabilistic calculations for a separate sewer system have been performed. This included special artefacts such as:
Pump stations
Energy sinks
Designs and specifications for the pump station (above) and the energy sink (below).
This portfolio is the result of all my university projects, performed with passion and hard work. Not only did the learnings from my education path aid at my growth as a young professional, but also the internship period at IDOM, consulting, engineering and architecture This six month period allowed me to understand the management side of a civil engineer as well as the contact with the clients. Each of these opportunities and projects helped me shape my future as a civil engineering and I am highly grateful for it.
