ES La villa de Crevillent se halla emplazada al pie de la sierra del mismo nombre de 835 mts. de altitud, que pertenece al extremo oriental de las subbéticas y en las que se encuentran los picos de San Cayetano, San Juri, la Vella y el Puntal. Sierra y llanura son los elementos que conforman su relieve, surcado por varias ramblas.

El clima es de tipo semiárido y la temperatura media es de 18º, con mínimas en invierno de 3º y máximas en verano cercanas a 40º.

La pluviometría es baja con valores en torno a 298 l. En la llanura aluvial se halla la laguna de El Hondo, declarada paraje natural. Desde siempre ha destacado por su industria alfombrera.

Sus inicios datan del paleolítico superior, hace unos 30.000 años, pero es a partir del calcolítico en el poblado de Les Moreres donde se encuentran vestigios de forma constante. De la época romana abundan las villas situadas en los llanos del término municipal. El origen del casco urbano es islámico, Qirbilyan, conforme era conocido en lengua árabe, fue conquistada por los cristianos en 1243 y hasta 1318 el poder lo ostentó un caudillo o ra´is. Bajo el posterior control del Duque de Maqueda, Crevillent fue creciendo al amparo de una agricultura de secano muy pobre, buscando con afán agua en el interior de su sierra mediante perforaciones por medio de minas. Tras la expulsión morisca en 1609, la población se redujo a un tercio. En el siglo XVIII se le concedió el título de villa por su fidelidad a la causa borbónica en la guerra de sucesión. El devenir histórico en los siglos XIX y XX tiene su razón en la evolución de aquella artesanía del esparto y del junco que evolucionó a una potente industria alfombrera en Crevillent.

EN The town of Crevillent is situated at the foot of the sierra of the same name, which is 835 m high, has four peaks: San Cayetano, San Juri, Vella and el Puntal, and belongs to the eastern point of the ‘Subbaetic System’. The terrain of its municipal area is made up of two elements: the Sierra and the plain, marked by the several ravines that cross it.

The climate is semi-arid and the average temperature is 18º, with minimal temperatures of 3º in winter and maximum temperatures close to 40º in summer. It has a low rainfall of around 298 l. On the flood plain there is a natural lagoon “El Hondo” which is a Natural Park.

It has always stood out by its carpet industry. The origins of the town date back to the Upper Paleolithic period, about 30.0000 years ago. However, relics from the Chalcolithic period are constantly found in the village of “Les Moreres”. There are many villages from the Roman period on the plains in this municipal area. The origins of the town centre are Islamic; Qirbilyan, as it was known in Arabic, was conquered by the Christians in 1243, and until 1318 power was in the hands of the “caudillo”(political/military leader) or the rais (arab leader). Under the later control of the Duke of Maqueda, Crevillent began to grow; it was sustained by very poor irrigated-agriculture and avid searches for water were made within the sierra through perforations by means of mines. After the expulsion of the moors in 1609, the town was reduced by a third. In the 18th century it was given the title of municipal town because of its loyalty to the Bourbon cause in the war of succession.

The historic developments in the 19th and 20th century brought about the evolution of artisan skills in esparto and cane which developed into a strong carpet industry in Crevillent.

ES En el aspecto cultural Crevillent destaca por sus manifestaciones artístico musicales y sus museos. Esta localidad cuenta con numerosas agrupaciones musicales, la tradición musical se completa con el canto coral, cuyos cantos ya están testimoniados en el año 1891 contando en la actualidad con más de 9 agrupaciones corales.

En el apartado de los museos destaca el Museo Municipal Mariano Benlliure (1862-1947), que cuenta con una selección de obras en unas instalaciones museísticas reformadas y ampliadas con cerca de 1.000 m². También destaca el Museo Arqueológico Municipal situado en la casa municipal del parque, en la colección expuesta destacan 3 conjuntos: los moldes de fundición para hachas y espadas del Bronce final del Bosch; los bronces fenicios del camí de Catral y la Canyada Joana y el tesorillo de denarios de Cachapets. Además el citado edificio de la casa del parque alberga en su planta baja el despacho-laboratorio del famoso médico crevillentino Dr. Mas Magro (1879-1953), considerado uno de los padres de la hematología española. También nombrar el museo Julio Quesada, creado por la Cooperativa Eléctrica Benéfica “San Francisco de Asís”.

Y nuestro Museo de la Semana Santa, en el que permanecen expuestos 24 de los 32 grupos escultóricos, que procesionan en Semana Santa en Crevillent. La peculiaridad de este museo, es que la distribución de los grupos escultóricos en las 4 plantas que posee junto a los espacios abiertos y abalconados, ofrecen al visitante la posibilidad de contemplar varias de las obras desde diferentes perspectivas.

Estos se hallan incluidos en la red de museos de la Generalitat Valenciana.

EN The cultural profile of Crevillent stands out for its artistic and musical events, and museums. The town has numerous musical groups, and its musical tradition would not be complete without the choirs, whose songs date back to 1891; there are now more than 9 choirs.

Among the several museums in the town, Mariano Benlliure (1862-1947) Local Museum, which has a selection of works in the reformed and extended museum installations of about 1,000m2. Another important museum is the Municipal Archeological Museum which is housed in the municipal centre in the park; the collection includes 3 exhibitions: casting moulds for bronze axes and swords from the late bronze age (El Bosch), the Phoenician bronzes from the road to Catral and the Canyada Joana, and the “Cachapets denari”. On the ground floor of this municipal centre you will also find the surgery-laboratory of the famous Crevillent doctor, Dr. Mas Magro (1879-1953), who is considered one of the fathers of Spanish haematology. We should also mention the Julio Quesada museum, created by the “Cooperativa Eléctrica Benéfica” ‘Saint Francis of Asisi’.

There is also our Holy Week Museum, included in the Valencian museum network, where there is a permanent exhibition of 24 of the 32 series of sculptures which take part in the Holy Week processions in Crevillent. The unusualness of this museum is that the sculptures are distributed on the four floors next to the open balcony areas, which means the visitor is able to contemplate the works from different perspectives. There are included in the retwork of museums belonging to Generalitat Valenciana.

ES Durante la primavera, tiene lugar la celebración de la Semana Santa, declarada en Noviembre de 2011 de Interés Turístico Internacional, cuyos orígenes se remontan al siglo XVII. Arte, tradición, religión y sentir popular son los elementos que definen a esta celebración de una belleza extrema. Su pórtico es el septenario en honor a la Virgen de los Dolores, que se conmemora durante toda la semana anterior a los actos pasionales.

La magia del Miércoles Santo comienza con el tradicional arreglo de pasos; pasos que posteriormente desde todos los puntos cardinales, concurren en la tradicional “entrada de pasos” en la Iglesia de Belén.

En la madrugada del Viernes Santo, al amanecer “La Morquera” es tomada por los vecinos para presenciar con fervor un acto sentido para Crevillent: el abrazo entre la madre y el hijo durante la procesión de camino del Calvario. Tras ello, siguiendo la tradición, los participantes reponen fuerzas en un almuerzo a base de “pa torrat” que acompañado de bacalao, ajos y habas conforman el genuino “almuerzo de Viernes Santo”. Con el atardecer la solemnidad cubre las calles de Crevillent, con la procesión de la Muerte de Cristo, una de las procesiones más bonitas, donde los pasos del escultor Mariano Benlliure jalonan tramo a tramo las calles del centro de la villa. Seis son los grupos escultóricos que participan en la procesión del Sábado Santo denominada “procesión del santo entierro de Cristo”. Los pasos van acompañados de los diferentes coros de la localidad interpretando motetes. Finalmente el Domingo de Resurrección de Jesucristo, Crevillent lo conmemora, en la plaza de la Constitución.

EN In spring, The Holy Week celebrations, which date back to the 17th century, take place. In November 2011 they were declared to be of International Tourist Interest. Art, tradition, religion and popular sentiment are the elements which define these extremely beautiful celebrations. They make their entrance with the “septenario” in honour of the “Virgen de los Dolores”, which is commemorated throughout the week prior to the acts for “The Passion”.

The magic of Holy Wednesday begins with the traditional adorning of the “thrones”; afterwards they all take part in the entrance of the “thrones” at the Belén church. At dawn on Good Friday, the people come out to follow “La Morquera” as fervent witnesses to this act which is of such sentimental value to Crevillent: the embrace between mother and son during the procession to Calvary. Afterwards, following tradition, the participants enjoy a lunch of “pa torrat”, which is accompanied by cod, garlic, broad beans and onions making it an authentic ‘Good Friday lunch’. When night falls the atmosphere in the streets of Crevillent becomes very solemn, with the procession of the death of Christ, one of the most beautiful processions, where the “thrones” by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure are carried through the streets of the town centre. There are six series of sculptures that participate in the Easter Saturday procession called “the entombment of Christ”. The Thrones are acompanied by the local choir performing “motetes” (typical local religions songs). Finally, the Sunday of Christ’s Resurrection is commemorated in the “plaza de la Constitución”.

ES La Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos de Crevillent se configura como una de las más importantes y vistosas entre las localidades donde tienen lugar este tipo de celebraciones.

Son doce las comparsas, seis moras y seis cristianas, las que forman la fiesta crevillentina, canalizada a través de la Asociación de Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos. Unas fiestas donde la mujer está plenamente integrada desde sus orígenes, realizando sugestivos ballets y coreografías.

Hay que destacar las dos entradas, cristiana y mora. Todas las comparsas lucen sus elegantes y bonitos trajes, urdidos con los tejidos de la fantasía y de la historia, destacando el lujo y la belleza de reinas y sultanas exhibiéndose en sus carrozas.

Y para terminar, un tercer elemento que nos gustaría destacar de nuestras fiestas son las Embajadas, declaradas Bien de Interés Cultural, piezas teatrales con contenido histórico que nos trasladan hasta el siglo XIII y que nos hablan de esas luchas entre moros y cristianos con la peculiaridad de que en nuestra población no hay ni vencedores ni vencidos.

Hay que remarcar que nuestras fiestas están dedicadas a nuestro patrón San Francisco de Asís, fiestas de Interés Turístico Nacional.

EN The Moors and Christians Fiesta in Crevillent is seen as one of the most important and colourful of all the towns that hold this type of celebration.

Twelve “comparsas” (groups) take part in this Crevillent fiesta; six are moors and six are Christian, which are organized through the “Association of Moors and Christian Fiestas”. From the very start, the women are fully involved in these fiestas, creating attractive dances and choreography.

The two entrances by the moors and Christians are particularly striking. All the members of the “comparsas” dress up in beautiful costumes, sewn with the same ornate materials from history, highlighting the luxury and beauty of the queens and sultans parading with their floats.

And finally a third aspect that we would like to highlight about our fiestas is the ‘Embajadas’, declared as Arset of Cultural Interest, historical theatrical performances which take us back to the 18th century and tell us about the battles between the moors and Christians with the unusualness that in our town there are neither victors nor losers.

We should also emphasize that our fiestas are dedicated to our patron saint Saint Francis of Asisi and have the distinction of being fiestas of National Tourist Interest.

caves used as dwellings ES En el siglo XVIII, cuando la población experimentó un crecimiento importante pasando a la cifra de 8.100 habitantes en 1794, se desbordó la capacidad del casco urbano y la población comenzó a ocupar las laderas de los barrancos, con lo que se crearon las cuevas artificiales utilizadas como vivienda, que con el tiempo se ha convertido en un tipo de hábitat muy popular. Las cuevas se localizan en los barrancos de la parte alta del casco urbano, ocupan una superficie de 365.000 m2, previamente a su excavación recortan la pendiente de la ladera dejándola vertical para que después sirva de terraza.

La organización es casi urbana, pero si la pendiente es acusada se disponen conformando un paisaje típico. En la actualidad las transformaciones urbanas han originado notables cambios en estos barrios. El casco urbano, poco a poco, va ganándoles terreno, utilizando en este último caso la cueva como una vivienda complementaria. Entre las calles más típicas se encuentran Sendra, El Ángel, La Salud, Llorens y Carretas.

ES In the 18th century, when the town experienced a sharp growth, rising to 8,100 inhabitants in 1794, the capacity of the urban area was saturated and the people began to occupy the slopes of the ravines, and artificial caves were created and used as homes, which over time have become a very popular habitat. The caves can be found in the ravines at the highest part of the urban area, they cover an area of 365.000 m2; prior to their excavation the gradient of the slope is cut making it vertical so it can be used as a terrace.

The organization is almost urban, but where the gradient is sharp the lay out is adapted to fit in with the landscape. At present, urban developments have brought about important changes in these neighbourhoods. The urban centre has gradually taken them over, with the cave becoming a complementary home. The most typical streets are Sendra, El Ángel, La Salud, Llorens and Carretas.

ES Crevillent ha tenido un amplio desarrollo urbanístico y de infraestructuras. Entre las más importantes se encuentra el Parc Nou, el pulmón más importante de la villa con 29.000 m2, creado en 1976. Entrando a Crevillent, frente al cuartel de la guardia civil, se halla un pequeño parque de 1.900 m2, el Parquet, frecuentado por vecinos mayores de la población. En la zona de Ronda sur, se encuentra otro parque del mismo nombre de aprox. 5.800 m2, que fue inaugurado en 1991. El Calvario situado al oeste es el paseo más antiguo de la villa, seguramente del siglo XVIII, tanto en su origen como ahora está estrechamente vinculado a la Semana Santa, constituyendo un lugar de encuentro durante el Viernes Santo.

Uno de los paseos más importantes es el de Fontenay, une las partes norte y sur de la población, mediante una prolongación del mismo, llamado Paseo Donantes de Sangre que fue construido en 1998. Entre las más recientes zonas habilitadas, destacan, la nueva plaza del ayuntamiento, situada frente al mismo, inaugurada en 2003, en un lateral se sitúa la escultura de bronce del “Xiquet Menaó”.

La plaza de la Comunidad Valenciana, inaugurada en septiembre de 2006 se trata de una actuación importante dentro del proyecto de urbanización de la rambla, en ella encontramos una figura ecuestre del Rey Jaime II “El Justo”. La urbanización de la Rambla, finalizada en mayo de 2007 es calificada como la obra urbanística más importante de la localidad. Atraviesa Crevillent de norte a sur, constituyendo una superficie de 62.600 m2 y 1330 m. lineales de la antigua Rambla de Castelar.

EN Crevillent has an extensive urban development and infrastructure. The most important is the “Parc Nou”, which was created in1976 and is the most important green area of the town, covering 29,000 m2. As you go into Crevillent, opposite the “Guardia Civil” barracks, there is a small park of about 1,900 m2, “el Parquet”, which is often visited by the older members of the population. On the south by-pass, there is another park with the same name of about 5,800 m2, which was opened in 1991. The “Calvario”, which is situated to the west of the oldest promenade in the town, dating from the 18th century, is now closely linked to Holy Week, as it was in its beginnings, and represents a meeting place on Good Friday.

One of the most important promenades is “Fontenay”, which joins the northern and southern areas of the town, via an extension called “Paseo Donantes de Sangre”, which was built in 1998. Among the most recent areas to be habilitated is the new town hall square, situated opposite the town hall and opened in 2003, where the bronze sculpture of “Xiquet Menaó” can be found. The “plaza de la Comunidad Valenciana”, which opened in September 2006, is an important development within the urbanization project of the ravine, where the horse mounted figure of King James II ‘the Just’ can be found. The urbanization of the ravine completed in May 2007 is qualified as the most important urban work of the town. It crosses Crevillent from north to south, and covers an area of 62,600 m2 and 1330 linear metres of the old “Rambla de Castelar”.

el hondo ES En Crevillent se emplaza uno de los humedales más importantes de España, el Parque Natural de El Hondo, que ostenta reconocimiento internacional al ser declarado zona ZEPA, LIC y estar además incluido en la lista Ramsar y en el Catálogo Valenciano de Zonas Húmedas. El paraje está constituido por dos embalses reguladores de riego, Poniente y Levante, rodeados a su vez de otras pequeñas charcas de propiedad privada y campos de saladar.

Desde el aspecto medioambiental, este humedal constituye asimismo un nicho ecológico de enorme interés, además de por su flora y su fauna, por la gran variedad de especies que se detienen en la zona en sus migraciones del Norte de la Península y Europa hacia el continente africano, siendo las más importantes la focha común, el pato cuchara y la garza imperial.

El parque cuenta con dos itinerarios a través de los cuales el visitante podrá disfrutar de la observación de aves en un entorno natural privilegiado: el existente en el Centro de Información que permite observar dos pequeñas lagunas; y el ornitológico, de 5 kilómetros (ida y vuelta) que, gracias a sus observatorios permite observar fácilmente toda la avifauna.

EN One of the most important lakes in Spain is situated in Crevillent, the Natural Park “El Hondo”, which has achieved international recognition on being declared ZEPA zone and LIC. It is also included in the “Ramsar” list and in the Valencian Catalogue of Wetlands. The park has two separate lakes regulating eastern and western irrigation, surrounded by small private pools and salt marshes.

From the environmental aspect, this lake also represents an ecological corner of great environmental interest, not only for its flora and fauna, but also for the wide variety of species that stop over on their migrations from the North of the Peninsula and Europe towards Africa; the most important being the common coot, the shoveller and the purple heron.

The park has two itineraries for the visitor to enjoy bird-watching in a privileged environment: from the Information Centre which enables you to observe two small lagoons; and the bird-watching route, 5 kilometers (there and back), which thanks to the observatories allows you to observe all the avifauna.

ES Crevillent posee unas características geográficas muy propias, con una zona montañosa al norte, que presenta un frente casi rectilíneo atravesado por pequeños barrancos, y una llanura al sur, condicionada por los aportes de las ramblas, además de un clima semiárido.

Entre sus parajes naturales, sobresale el Parque de Montaña de San Cayetano, situado al pie del pico del mismo nombre y con una altitud de 817 m. La configuración orográfica de Crevillent favorece la práctica del senderismo, ya que abundan las laderas no muy escarpadas y suaves valles por donde transcurren pistas y caminos de herraduras.

EN Crevillent has its own particular geographical features, with a mountainous area in the North which forms an almost straight line and is furrowed by small crevices, and a plain to the south conditioned by the ravines, besides a semi-arid climate. Among its natural parks, the most important is the “Parque de Montaña de San Cayetano”, situated at the foot of the peak of the same name and with an altitude of 817m. The orography of Crevillent is shaped in a way that favours hiking, since the slopes are not very steep and the valleys are low and full of paths and trails.

ES La base de la economía crevillentina tradicionalmente ha sido la INDUSTRIA DE LA ALFOMBRA, ocupando el primer lugar en producción y exportación nacional. Esta actividad tiene sus antecedentes en la edad media; si bien las primeras referencias de interés datan del siglo XVI, donde se indica que existían cuarenta “botigues” dedicadas a su producción. Fue a principio del siglo XX con la llegada los primeros telares mecánicos, cuando se pasa a tejer alfombras de lana dando lugar al despegue de esta industria. Inicialmente se sigue el modelo de tipo familiar, comenzando a partir de los cuarenta la creación de grandes empresas, origen de las actuales, con una producción aproximada de 3.500.000 m2.

EN The basis of the Crevillent economy has traditionally been the CARPET INDUSTRY, holding first place in national production and export.

This activity goes back to medieval times, although the first references of interest date back to the 16th Century, when forty “botigues” dedicated to production are said to have existed. It was at the start of the 20th century with the arrival of the first mechanical looms when they went on to make carpets with wool, which led to a boost in this industry. Initially they were family companies, but in the forties large companies were established, the origin of today’s factories, with a production of around 3.500.000 m2.
