La Marina narcoboat chase nets 1.5 tons of drugs

In a daring escape, a ‘narcoboat’ managed to evade the clutches of the Guardia Civil after successfully transporting a staggering 1.5 tons of hashish to a beach in La Marina. The dramatic incident unfolded when the vessel was spotted approaching the La Marina area of Elche, eventually landing at El Pinet beach. With lightning-fast precision, the crew swiftly unloaded bales of hashish, each weighing a substantial 35 kilos.

Promptly responding to the illicit operation, the Guardia Civil, accompanied by local police from Elche and Santa Pola, swiftly converged on the scene. However, two individuals managed to elude the authorities on foot before being captured. In their hasty escape, the criminals abandoned two cars on the seaside, leaving behind fty drums of gasoline, adding an air of intrigue to the already high-stakes situation.

Undeterred, the Guardia Civil immediately set o in pursuit of the narcoboat, which reportedly carried up to ten people. In a desperate bid for increased speed, the crew resorted to throwing bales of hashish into the water, lightening the boat’s load. Equipped with four powerful outboard motors, the craft managed to outmanoeuvre the authorities, successfully shaking o the pursuing Guardia Civil after a tense two-hour chase.

The incident happened mid-June

with details just being released by police after the two individuals apprehended during the initial encounter at El Pinet appeared before the court. Following their appearance both were promptly incarcerated, their fate sealed by the evidence against them.

In an unrelated operation conducted a day prior, the Elche Policia Local made a signi cant drug seizure in the Valverde district. Acting on timely intelligence, law enforcement authorities managed to intercept two vans transporting a

staggering 3.5 tons of hashish. Five Spanish nationals in their twenties were detained in connection with the operation, and subsequently, four of them were handed prison sentences, underscoring the gravity of their involvement in the illegal drug trade.

These recent incidents highlight the ongoing battle between law enforcement agencies and criminal organisations involved in drug tra cking. Despite the authorities’ tireless e orts to curb such activities, the audacious escape of the narcoboat serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in tackling this illicit trade. The authorities remain resolute in their commitment to protecting public safety and eradicating the in uence of organised crime within the region.

Torrevieja solar farm blocked

Valencia’s Ministry for Ecological Transition has put a halt to the construction of a 12,000-panel solar farm in the region. The proposed site, situated between Los Montesinos and Torrevieja, was denied permission due to its close proximity to a natural park.

The solar farm, which would have been developed on eight hectares near the Los Montesinos roundabout on the CV-95, faced opposition from the conservation group called the Friends of

the South Alicante Wetlands. The group expressed concerns that the project would encroach upon the environmental impact bu er zone for the La Mata and Torrevieja Natural Park lakes. Had it been approved, the solar farm would have been the rst of its kind in the Torrevieja municipality. However, the land in question falls under the Natural Resources Management Plan (PORN) for the protected natural area. The General Directorate of Environmen-

tal Quality stated that the solar plant project failed to meet the necessary environmental criteria for development.

O cials from the natural park also warned that the plant could cause environmental damage and hinder certain permitted activities, such as agriculture.

The company behind the project initiated the application process in November 2020, but the site only held permission for agricultural use. The Valencian government repeatedly requested

the unnamed company to resubmit the application due to the lack of speci city regarding the exact location of the solar farm.

Currently, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition is evaluating proposals for a solar macro-plant that would provide energy to Torrevieja’s desalination plant. However, the choice of location poses challenges due to its proximity to the natural park and potential future urbanisation.

Irish gangster to return for Torrevieja trial

In a dramatic turn of events during a recent extradition hearing, notorious Irish gangster Darren Gilligan, son of renowned drug tra cker John Gilligan, revealed his consent to surrender to Spain. The 47-year-old Gilligan is set to face trial alongside his father and seven others in Torrevieja on multiple charges, including drug tra cking. If convicted, he could be sentenced to four years in prison.

During the hearing at the Dublin court, Gilligan unequivocally con rmed his understanding that by consenting to his return to Spain, he would be subjected to trial, potentially resulting in conviction and imprisonment. Seeking clarity, he asked Mr. Justice Naidoo when he would be sent back to Spain. The judge informed him that his return could not take place for at least another 10 days, and then he would be returned within the following 10 days.

The Gilligan gang, notorious for their criminal activities, stands accused of smuggling cannabis into Ireland cleverly concealed among ip- ops. They are also implicated in the illegal exportation of potent sleeping pills and face various charges related to rearms.

The gang’s initial trial in Torrevieja last October came to an abrupt halt after Darren Gilligan ed the country and returned to Ireland, where he assumed the role of an Amazon delivery driver to avoid capture. However, his evasive manoeuvres were short-lived. A new trial date scheduled for April had to be

postponed due to his absence, leading to an international arrest warrant being issued against him and his prompt detention.

Among the defendants in the Torrevieja case, following an exhaustive investigation, are John Gilligan’s British girlfriend, known only as Sharon, and his wealthy associate, ‘Fat’ Tony Armstrong, a well-known playboy gure.

Notably, John Gilligan himself stood trial in Dublin back in 1996 for the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin, but was subsequently acquitted.

During a search of Gilligan’s villa in the Torrevieja area in October 2020, authorities uncovered a buried revolver

Flood protection for Vega Baja Hospital

In a bid to safeguard Orihuela’s Vega Baja Hospital from potential ooding, the Valencian Government has allocated €2.5 million for necessary protective measures. This decision comes after the hospital’s services faced near collapse during the devastating storms of September 2019.

The proposed solution to mitigate ooding risks involves constructing a 1.25-meter-high perimeter wall around the hospital premises. Additionally, a water storage area will be established in close proximity to the facility. The hospital has already started a €70 million expansion project in March, adding to the urgency of protecting it from potential ood damage.

oor and even into some operating rooms. Consequently, routine medical procedures had to be postponed.

To address these critical issues, the General Directorate of Water has recommended the construction of a 1.25-meter-high perimeter wall. Given that the expansion works began in March and a fence is already in place, minor modi cations can be made to minimise ood risks. Additionally, the plan includes the implementation of a sustainable drainage system, capable of storing rainwater for subsequent removal from the area.

that bore similarities to the weapon used in Guerin’s murder. However, no further evidence linking Gilligan to the crime could be established.

Meanwhile, Brian Meehan, a member of Gilligan’s gang, remains incarcerated after receiving a life sentence for his involvement in Guerin’s execution.

Darren Gilligan’s consent to extradition signals a signi cant development in the high-pro le case, which has garnered substantial media attention in Ireland and Spain. As the trial approaches, anticipation builds regarding the outcome of this legal battle involving one of Ireland’s most notorious criminal families.

Situated just a few meters away from the Segura River, between Jacarilla and Benejuzar, the Vega Baja Hospital faced a signi cant threat of river over ow during the 2019 storms. While the river did not breach its banks at that location, nearby areas such as Almoradi experienced severe ooding.

However, the hospital still faced challenges as the ooding of the CV91 in various sections and other access routes to Orihuela City left the facility cut o by road. The deluge overwhelmed the sewage network, resulting in water surging out of toilets and sinks on the hospital’s ground

Once the new drainage system is established, the project also envisions the creation of a storage pond by the hospital. This pond will serve as an additional safeguard against potential ooding in the future.

It is anticipated that a tender will be announced later this summer to seek proposals for the execution and construction of the ood defences. The project will also involve the potential expropriation of any required land. With the allocation of €2.5 million and the planned ood mitigation measures, the Valencian Government aims to protect the Vega Baja Hospital from future ooding events. These crucial initiatives will ensure the continued provision of medical services to the community while minimising the risk of disruptions caused by natural disasters.

Spam calls to be banned

In a move welcomed by residents across the country, Spain has taken decisive action against the relentless barrage of spam calls that have plagued phone users for years. With the implementation of a new law on 29th June the country aims to put an end to these pesky and unwanted phone solicitations once and for all.

The Telecommunications Law of Spain, which was passed in 2022, has paved the way for legal action against companies involved in spam calls, regardless of their location. The law grants the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) the authority to impose nes on o ending companies, although speci c penalty amounts have not been speci ed in the legislation.

Following its publication in the

O cial State Gazette (BOE) the General Telecommunications Law underwent a one-year process to become enforceable. Now, under Article 66 of the law, end users have the right to refuse unsolicited sales calls, unless they have provided prior consent or the call can be justi ed under legitimate grounds outlined in the EU’s data protection regulation.

Leading telecommunications company Telefónica, which operates Movistar, a prominent mobile and internet service provider, has expressed support for the new law. Telefónica stated that their sales calls to non-clients are already minimal, aligning with the legislation’s objectives.

In addition to the ban on spam calls, Spain had previously introduced regulations in 2022

that prohibited cold calling before 9 am and after 9 pm, as well as on weekends and public holidays. Furthermore, major phone and internet providers in the country have voluntarily committed to refraining from calling customers during the traditional “siesta time” from 3 pm to 4 pm.

While Spain had already o ered the Robinson list, an opt-out registry for individuals wishing to avoid spam calls, the new law aims to signi cantly reduce the overall volume of unwanted sales calls for all residents in the country. With this comprehensive approach, Spain is ushering in a new era of peace and quiet, shielding its citizens from the constant interruption and annoyance caused by spam calls.

Duty-free booze banned on UK Ryanair ights to Spain

Ryanair, one of Europe’s leading low-cost airlines, has recently announced a prohibition on duty-free alcohol for ights originating from the UK and destined for popular Spanish airports. The decision comes as a response to concerns surrounding disruptive behaviour onboard and aims to prioritize passenger safety and comfort.

E ective immediately, the ban applies exclusively to alcoholic beverages purchased in duty-free shops prior to boarding and will be enforced on ights departing from the UK to Spanish airports frequently visited by holidaymakers. The move addresses the escalating incidents of disruptive behaviour resulting from excessive alcohol consumption during ights.

Ryanair’s decision aligns with their ongoing commitment to passenger well-being and their endeavour to provide a pleasant travel experience. By disallowing the consumption of duty-free alcohol during ights, the airline seeks to discourage unruly behaviour and maintain a peaceful atmosphere onboard.

Passengers who have purchased duty-free alcohol will be required to either store it in their checked baggage or

dispose of it before boarding the aircraft. Ryanair urges passengers to adhere to these regulations and cooperate with cabin crew members to ensure a seamless and safe journey.

The ban on duty-free alcohol introduced by Ryanair is part of a broader industry-wide initiative to address disruptive behaviour onboard ights. Airlines have been actively implementing various measures, including raising awareness, providing crew member training, and collaborating with industry partners and authorities to curb incidents related to alcohol consumption.

Passengers planning to y from the UK to popular Spanish destinations with Ryanair are advised to review the updated regulations and plan their travel accordingly. Staying informed, adhering to guidelines, and contributing to a positive and enjoyable travel experience for everyone is strongly encouraged.

Jail time

In a recent incident, an intoxicated passenger aboard a Ryanair ight was sentenced to jail for attempting to smuggle alcohol onboard. This event sheds light on the ongoing issue of disruptive behaviour

Monetary boost for savers

Spanish Economy Minister

and illegal activities that airlines and authorities are actively combating.

The identity of the individual involved has not been disclosed. However, they were found guilty of attempting to smuggle alcohol onto a Ryanair ight.

The incident occurred during the aircraft’s pre-departure phase, prompting immediate intervention from cabin crew and authorities. The passenger’s disruptive behaviour and disregard for airline regulations led to their arrest and subsequent legal repercussions.

This incident serves as a reminder of the severe consequences individuals face when engaging in unlawful activities during ights. Smuggling alcohol or any other prohibited items poses a threat to the safety and security of passengers and crew members, potentially resulting in disruptions and potential harm. Airlines continuously work to ensure a safe and pleasant journey for all travellers by implementing measures such as crew training, heightened awareness campaigns, and cooperation with law enforcement agencies. These e orts aim to prevent disruptive incidents and maintain a secure environment onboard.

Nadia Calvino has called on banks to begin passing the recent increase in interest rates to their customers, emphasising the need to bene t Spanish citizens. Her remarks came during an event sponsored by Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA in Santander, northern Spain.

The European Central Bank’s tightening of monetary policy and the rise in the deposit rate to 3.5% have resulted in improved margins for Spanish banks. However, most lenders have chosen not to pass on a signi cant portion of these bene ts to retail customers in the form of higher interest rates for deposits.

Carlos Torres, Chairman of BBVA, explained that excess

liquidity in the nancial system is the primary reason behind banks’ reluctance to o er higher rates for deposits. He suggested that this situation may change as liquidity levels decrease. Instead of raising deposit rates, banks are exploring alternative options such as xed-income mutual funds or savings accounts.

Bankinter CFO Jacobo

Diaz Garcia expressed his expectations for a shift in deposit remuneration during the bank’s full-year 2022 earnings call, saying, “We do expect, across the year, more attention to the remuneration of deposits.”

While major Spanish banks like Banco Santander SA, BBVA, and CaixaBank SA have yet to launch signi cant campaigns o ering higher rates for client

deposits, smaller competitors are already taking the lead in order to gain market share. ING Groep NV, for instance, recently introduced a three-month deposit in Spain with an annual remuneration of 2.5% for new savings up to €100,000.

In summary, Spanish Economy Minister Nadia Calvino has stressed the importance of Spanish banks passing on the bene ts of higher interest rates to their customers and the wider population. While some banks attribute their reluctance to excess liquidity, smaller competitors are already o ering higher rates to attract customers and increase their market presence. The situation may evolve as liquidity levels decrease in the future.

What is the NLV residence certi cate that I have heard about?

The NLV is a Non-Lucrative Visa that is available to UK passport holders who wish to move to Spain. Other options include the Golden Visa and now the new Digital-Nomad visa. For many people moving to Spain now, the NLV is the easiest route to go and especially useful for people who have sold a house in the UK to fund their dream of living in a warmer climate.

You will need to prove that you have su cient nancial means to support yourself without working in your new country. The minimum monthly income requirement for this type of visa is currently €2,259.60 for the main applicant, plus €564.90 for each dependent. The money (at least two years’ worth) can also be kept in savings of some form. This equates to €35,991.88 per couple per year.

Therefore, it is essential to have a solid nancial plan and investment strategy before applying for the visa. You should consider taking professional advice from a nancial advisor who understands the laws and regulations of both Spain and the UK.

Do I need to keep the money in a Spanish bank account?

No. Spanish bank accounts do not pay much interest and therefore your money will not be working for you.

We recommend considering alternative investments like:

•A Spanish-compliant investment bond

•Rental income from a property

•Deposits in other countries

It is essential to research and compare di erent investment products, their risks, fees, and tax implications before making any decisions. It is also a good idea to look for diversi cation within a portfolio and to keep the money available for renewals within the rst ve years.

Finally, you should keep accurate records of your investments, income and expenses to comply with the visa renewal requirements and tax obligations in Spain. A Spanish-compliant bond will assist you with all the above.

GBP

GBP / EUR UPDATE

The decision by the BoE to hike UK interest rates by 50bps to 5% yesterday surprised many in markets and beyond.

Markets had priced in a 25bps hike, and the fact that the BoE had given no forward guidance on a potentially larger hike, had many analysts settling on the 25bps move. However, the BoE decided to go bold now given evidence of persistent in ation, news of which had been con rmed just a day before. In fairness to the BoE, they hardly had much of a window to ag a larger hike. Understandably, the BoE also said that they are likely to hike rates further moving forward. The BoE’s terminal rate is now expected to move over 6%. Tough times ahead.

Whilst the likes of the EU and especially the US, have seen much bigger declines among in ation of late, the latest data con rmed that UK headline in ation remained stuck at 8.7% during May, the same level as last month and considerably higher than the 8.4% that had been expected among analysts. Worse still, Core in ation (which removes food and energy prices) rose from 6.8% in April to 7.1% last month.

Prior to the in ation report, markets had already been primed and somewhat rattled by the sudden growth in wages highlighted in the latest unemployment report last week. Higher wages feed through to higher in ation as consumers spend more (see the bottom of the GBP section for evidence), with wage growth in particular being further impacted from the impact of Brexit on labour shortages, as companies have been forced to pay more for workers.

Even before Thursday’s big BoE move, interest rates had already been having a materially damaging impact on the UK property market. With this in mind, Jeremy Hunt called for a meeting with major lenders today (Friday), to assess the state of the mortgage market, after a recent surge in borrowing costs. His move came after the average two-year rate climbed above 6% on Monday. However, Hunt ruled out government help on mortgages and suggested that ‘we won’t do anything that will prolong the in ationary agony that people are going through,’ given that pumping more money into the system would likely just help to accelerate in ation. Therefore, it seems unlikely that Hunt will be unable/unwilling to o er any form of assistance as it stands. Ordinarily, higher interest rates also feed into higher

Neonatal unit opens its doors

currencies, but the pound wobbled after the big 50bps move, with markets seriously questioning whether the newly aggressive stance from the BoE will send the UK economy into a tailspin and a potentially damaging recession. GBP/USD had traded as high as 1.2840 as the news broke from the BoE, but quickly slipped back to below 1.2750. Likewise, GBP/EUR slipped further away from the 1.1700 region, a move further impacted by the surge in EUR/USD beyond 1.1000 (see EUR).

Whilst the data had clearly been obtained before the BoE hike, the latest GfK Consumer Con dence survey (up from -27 to -24) and Retail Sales data highlight a more robust consumer. Retail Sales increased by 0.3% during May, following on from a 0.5% rise during the previous month, and well ahead of a -0.2% decline.

EURO

EUR/USD rallied over 1.1000 earlier in the week, albeit temporarily, for the rst time in roughly a month and a half. Aside from the US side of the pair, helping to drive Euro gains have been the constantly hawkish outlook on rates among key ECB members. Christine Lagarde suggested that a July hike is likely, and although in ation has declined to Around 6% in the region of late, the ECB are still a country mile away from their 2% target level, hence the ECB’s commitment.

As we have highlighted on many occasions beforehand, the regional economy looks to be struggling against higher rates, with Germany and the region as a whole recently slipping into a recession. Whilst a little on the thin side this week, incoming data has hardly helped to change that dynamic, as Construction Output declined (once again) over the past month, although there was a slight beat in Regional Consumer Con dence, which improved from -17.4 to -16.1 on a preliminary basis during June.

Today’s (Friday) PMI surveys among the region should give evidence of ongoing manufacturing weakness. Next week sees the release of the in ation data throughout the region, as well as key German Retail Sales and the latest IFO survey. As always, in ation is the big one to watch.

Back to the single currency, and further attempts at a more sustainable break over 1.1000 could be forthcoming if the ECB maintain their hawkish narrative and we see evidence of improving European data combined with the possibility of a broadly weakening dollar.

The neonatal unit of the Torrevieja hospital has opened its doors 24 hours a day for parents and extended opening hours for accompanying persons.

The neonatology unit of the university hospital of Torrevieja has resumed its open door policy for mothers and fathers, with access to the unit 24 hours a day. In addition, it has incorporated two extra shifts to facilitate access to relatives and companions.

The visiting hours for relatives and companions will be from 20:30 to 20:50 hours, with a maximum of two relatives per baby. Only two people may stay with the patient during the visit, one of whom must be the father or mother, and the second, the companion or relative.

The neonatology unit of the University Hospital of Torrevieja has a programme that contributes, to a great extent, to the recovery and growth of the newborn, allowing parents to access the neonatology unit at any time, maintaining the hygiene and safety conditions that are essential for dealing with these minors.

The possibility of being with the newborns is completed by the application of care through the kangaroo method, suitable for all babies, healthy or sick. It basically consists of providing skin-to-skin contact between the baby and the parents, the possibility of breastfeeding on demand and providing the care needed by mother and child.

The World Health Organisation states that open

doors in neonatal units and the kangaroo method constitute a modern system of care in any care setting. It has been shown that the Mother Kangaroo Method has an e ective impact on temperature control, breastfeeding and bonding for all newborns, regardless of their environment, weight, gestational age and clinical situation.

The unit also has a protocol for minimal handling of premature or underweight infants, respecting rest times and facilitating contact with their parents in a relaxed atmosphere, enabling parents and guardians to familiarise themselves with the care of the newborn, becoming involved in the care of their children from the rst hours of life.

Orihuela pyrotechnics expert delights Alicante crowds

The pyrotechnics of the Oriolan Hermanos Ferrández, based in Beniel (Murcia) digitized the rst part of the ‘mascletà’ at the Hogueras de Alicante festivities, before giving way to a central part in which “classicism” predominated.

The ring of the fth session of the 34th Mascletaes Contest , which is held in the Plaza de los Luceros, lasted six minutes and 23 seconds, with 149.87 kilos of gunpowder, according to the Alicante City Council in a statement.

The digitization of the shot began to be appreciated in the initial four phases, each one accompanied by di erent e ects. Speci cally, streamers with coloured thunder were launched in the rst, buzzers in the second, whistles and thunder in the third, and smoke details with crackers in the fourth. A succession of simultaneous terrestrial thunder brought this rst part to an end.

The corps, of classic cut, was made up of six retentions

that were ‘in crescendo’, accompanied by aerial re. All this gave way to a “powerful” earthquake, characterized by its long duration, which moved and made the thousands of people gathered on the perimeter vibrate.

The nal phase combined ground and aerial shots that went from less to more power, with a series of digital thunder to cap it o . The Hermanos Ferrández pyrotechnics won this contest in 2019, in what is their last presence in Alicante.

not be your cup of tea; however, is it possible that the gifts were considered thoughtfully, and made with the best of intentions? By giving her a box of the unwanted items, you may have upset her. The donation to a charity may have been done out of frustration; she not knowing how to please you.

If you want a better relationship with your son and his wife, I think, for you, this needs to be aired. I urge you and your husband to sit down and have a talk with your son and daughter in law, but please refrain from making it a slanging match; if it is your intention to build bridges, please don’t take along torpedoes.

My son’s wife has always annoyed me, and particularly when it comes to gift giving. She took the responsibility of gift buying from my son, and started deliberately buying inappropriate gifts. One Christmas she bought Chanel perfume and a silk scarf for me; and for my husband a husband a bottle of Hugo Boss and a cashmere scarf. Then followed similar gifts for my birthday, a rose pink Lancome lipstick; I don’t use those brands. Then a weekend away at a Spa. We didn’t go; it was a waste. My feelings have been boiling up for years. I gave her back a box of the collected items. The next year she sent me a card with a receipt for a donation made on my behalf to a charity; I am astounded. You might be astounded, but I, and a lot of readers might not see why you were so upset. Of course, I do not know the ins and outs of your relationship with your daughterin-law, and your feelings may be justified. But it seems to me that she has done some very nice things. Albatera student gets best exam results across the province

He got a 13.84 and will study Biotechnology at the Polytechnic University of Valencia

The student with the best grade in the EvAu in the entire province of Alicante is from Albatera . His name is Alejandro Fuentes, 18 years old and a former student of IES Antonio Serna. Not only that, Fuentes, with his 13.84 out of 14 in the EvAU, also becomes the second best student in the entire Valencian Community .

This young man from Albatería took the exam at the Campus de Desamparados of the Miguel Hernández de Elche University (UMH) and, according to Vega Baja Digital obtained a 9.94 (out of 10) between the average of the Baccalaureate and the EvAu note with compulsory subjects. Now he will have to decide what he wants to study and everything indicates that he will enroll in Biotechnology at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

What do people say in Albatera?

Everyone is congratulating my mother this week. The Albatera City Council has also congratulated me and the media are calling me to interview me. I’m very happy. How did you feel in the rst EvAu exam?

On Tuesday, June 6, I took the rst exam. He was the one from History and he was very nervous. In fact, he had a hard time sleeping the night before. That same morning I also took the Biology and Chemistry exams and I did quite well, so the following days I was calmer. What carreer are you going to study?

Well, I studied high school in Biological Sciences. When I got a high grade in the EvAU I had the itch to choose Medicine but what I really like is Biotechnology. I will study it at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. It is a relatively “new” career and has many opportunities such as medicine, for the development of therapies, medicines, agriculture, forensic medicine... and many that are yet to be discovered. I am more interested in medical outings with topics such as in vitro fertilization, for example. The bad thing is that in Spain it is more di cult to nd those job opportunities and it is more recognized in countries like Germany. We’ll see. Have you always been an exemplary student?

Yes, as a child I have always had an average of outstanding. Obviously there are always subjects that you are worse at. Language, for example, got an 8 or so, a little less than usual. In ESO, some years were a little more complicated because you don’t give it so much importance, but when it came to studying for Bachelor’s degree I got up to speed because I knew that it had a direct in uence on my future. Once everything has happened, was it as di cult as you expected?

Now I’m pretty calm. For me the most important thing is knowing how to control my nerves. For example, in high school I studied Physics but I didn’t prepare for the PAU. I took the Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics exams because they weighed me more. I went to the Physics exam without studying because I had already

taken it throughout the year and I did it very calmly. I had 20 minutes left but, on the other hand, people who were risking it in that exam were very nervous and at that moment you can forget things or you don’t see it clearly. In the optional phase exams I was a little more nervous but the compulsory phase seemed quite a ordable to me

How and when did you nd out that you got a 13.84?

Before knowing the note, I knew that I had already entered the race. They had turned out pretty well. Those days I was traveling in Poland and he caught me right on the bus going to Auschwitz. I was updating the notes all the time and when I nally saw the note I was happy. The rector of the UMH called my mother to congratulate me and told her that it was the second best grade in the entire Valencian Community. I did not expect it, I knew that it had turned out very well but not that much. No way.

What advice would you give future students who are going to take the EVAU exam?

I would advise you to calm your nerves. You have given the content throughout the year. When preparing for the EvAU, you have to prepare it intelligently. That is to say, if I want to study a career in which Biology and Chemistry or Latin and Greek weigh me more, it is theirs to prepare them more than other subjects that weigh less. And then distribute the study time well between the subjects. You have to set a goal, a note or a race if you are clear about it.

The Terra Natura Benidorm family grows with the birth of two new cotton-top tamarins

The Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park has welcomed the birth of two cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) in its facilities. With both births, the park strengthens the conservation of these animals that are in danger of extinction. Due to the delicate conservation status of this species, the cotton-top tamarins are listed in the CITES Annex, which is reserved for the most critically endangered species.

The cubs are in the care of their parents, so the veterinarians have not yet carried out any kind of physical examination so as not to interfere with the breeding process and avoid the risk of rejection. However, they do keep a close watch on the mother and cubs, through the observation method, to check that the behaviour between them is

completely normal and that there is social stability within the group.

Until the cubs begin to separate from the adults, they will not be sexed or examined by the vets. The experts at Terra Natura Benidorm estimate that at birth the hatchlings weighed approximately 50 grams and measured about ve centimetres.

The parents, named Martina and Basel, formed a family group in 2022 with the birth of the rst two cubs, which now joins this new birth with two new cotton-top tamarins.

Both parents are exemplary in their behaviour towards their o spring. Most of the time, the mother carries them on her body so that they can suckle on demand and feed on the mother’s milk. The rest of the time she shares the care with the father to establish and strengthen the social bond. Normally, at around

four months of age, they become independent from parental control and integrate into the rest of the group without di erences.

When the o spring are somewhat older, their older siblings will also participate in their care with the fundamental objective of establishing and creating the group and family bond, since these animals relate to each other within groups in which the family polarises the intragroup relationship. Female cottontop tamarins have a gestation period of ve to six months.

Cotton-top tamarins are considered to be one of the species of marmosets with the strongest family bonds. They can form groups of up to 20 individuals, together with brothers and sisters of di erent generations. The vocal communication of this animal

includes a speci c sound emitted when one of them nds its favourite food to warn the rest of the group and share it with them.

About Terra Natura Benidorm

Terra Natura Benidorm is a nature and animal park dedicated to the care of animal species, with more than 1,500 animals of 200 di erent species (98 of which are protected or in danger of extinction), 30 conservation projects and 19 breeding programmes. Its surface area is divided into four areas representing the continents of America, Asia and Europe, and the Pangea area, inspired by the origin of the Earth. The tour of its facilities immerses visitors in the concept of zoo-immersion and otherness, and they can enjoy a wide range of entertainment activities.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LAKES

The Torrevieja pink lake and the green lagoon of La Mata have been used for centuries, in the production of salt. After the Christian Conquest in the 13th Century the city of Torrevieja had not yet been founded, and the salt ats were known as Salinas Mayores.

On at least two occasions an attempt was made to create a sh pond, though without success. At rst, the salt was exported from the small jetty located in front of the Torre de la Mata. In the 19th Century it was decided to build a new pier in front of the Old Tower, which would be the origin of the current port and city of Torrevieja. At present, and since 1973 surprising as it may seem, the salt produced in the Salinas de

Torrevieja comes from the Cabezo de la Sal of Pinoso (Alicante). Between 1970 and 1972, a 50km pipeline was built to transport brine to Torrevieja because the concentration of salt in Pinoso is greater than that of seawater, thus increasing the production of salt. The tale of two friends who both became slim

Jacqui Wilkinson, whose life changing transformation is revealed below, looked so incredible during her Slim4Life weight loss journey and was such an inspiration to her friend Jackie Carter, that Jackie - desperate to lose weight - also started her Slim4Life journey.

After only a few weeks on the programme, which also changed Jackie´s life, Jackie decided to become a full time consultant to enable her to help people with weight problems. Jackie is currently undergoing a full Weight Loss Coaching Certi cation course and is just dying to get started on her new business.

Jackie Carter will be operating in the Rojales, Quesada and La Marquesa areas.

Jacqui Wilkinson

Start weight: 99.30 End weight: 73.30

Weight-loss: 26kg

“I’m so happy now and feel great when I go out. It’s fantastic to be able to just pull something out the wardrobe and not spend ages judging how I look and constantly asking my husband “does my bum look big in this” but, most importantly my health has improved! ”

Q: What made you decide to lose weight?

A: My weight reached an all-time high for me and I couldn’t bear to look at myself in the mirror. I also felt lethargic and knew that if I didn’t do something my health would deteriorate.

Q: What made you choose Slim4Life

A: I have struggled all my life with yo yo dieting, I’ve tried every diet, including extreme dieting in the 90’s lost weight then put it all back on . I never seemed to be able to maintain the weight loss. Then I read about Slim4Life and it seemed like there was a good support plan in place. I have also seen the fantastic results that others on the plan had achieved so in September 2022 decided to give it ago.

Q: What Slim4Life plan did you follow?

A: Total Solution

Q: What were your favourite Slim4LIfe products?

A: Chocolate Caramel Muesli and the Burger mix, also love the snacks for that special treat.

Q: What did you learn on the plan?

A: I am much more aware of what I eat and why in the past I made such bad food choices. Now if I go out anywhere special, I choose sensibly protein and vegetables.

Q: How did you plan t into your lifestyle?

A: I did not nd it too much of a problem at all. It’s so easy to follow, Muesli for breakfast, Shake for lunch, then one of the meals for dinner, if I’m out for exercise I just pack a snack bar which also boosts my energy levels. The meals are easy to prepare and ll you up and remarkably tasty.

Q: What kept you motivated?

A: My weekly consultations and weigh ins, seeing the scales drop every week was so amazing and the support from Shirley my consultant was fantastic. Seeing my clothes suddenly becoming far too big for me was also fabulous for motivation. I still keep a pair of shorts I had when I started and cannot believe the di erence.

Q: What exercise did you do?

A: I do Pilates once a week and a Latin dance class for an hour and a half each week. I nd

that my stamina has improved dramatically since starting the plan.

Q: When did you rst notice a di erence?

A: Probably after the rst month, my clothes were loose and I started to receive positive comments about my appearance from friends and neighbours who said I was looking years younger.

Q: How has your life changed?

A: My health has improved, my skin looks great, I am so much happier in myself, do

not mind putting a bikini on for the beach anymore. My con dence has soared. I just feel good about myself now.

Q: What is your next goal?

A: I still have a little way to go to get to my perfect BMI but can see I am on the last lap for that, then my goal is to maintain for the rest of my life.

Q: Would you recommend Slim4LIfe to a friend?

A: Most de nitely, every time anyone asks how I have done it, I tell them about Slim4Life.

RBL suspends Orihuela Costa senior members

Over nine months have now passed since members of the 140 strong Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion rst complained about what they allege to be the ‘bullyboy conduct’ of the Chairman of the District Committee in Spain (North). A former committee member explained that ‘in all that time, the only action taken has been closure of the branch, the dismissal of it’s committee and the suspension of 3 of the Orihuela Costa complainants, a former Army Major, a retired Royal Navy Commander and the long serving Honorary Branch Secretary’.

In the meantime, it is claimed that the subject of the complaint, Spain North Chairman has been completely untouched, allowed by the Legion Complaints Committee in London, to continue with his duties, and is now, rather bizarrely, about to chair the meeting that will decide on the future of the Orihuela Costa branch.

The former committee member is concerned that ‘all the time that the situation has been going on, since September 2022, the needs of the 140 paid up members have been largely ignored, as the branch has been prevented from meeting, despite petitions to the RBL President, Lieutenant General James Bashall, the RBL Chairman, Jason Coward and the RBL hierarchy in Haigh House,

London’.

In it’s National Charter ‘A Duty of Care to members’ is just one of the principles that the RBL claims to regard, above all others, and yet the 140 Orihuela Costa members, with many hundreds of years of loyal service between them, have allegedly, been “thrown to the wolves”, all because the Branch Chairman, Kevin Reardon, with temperatures in the high eighties, allowed his 79-year old Standard Bearer to wear ‘shirt sleeve order’ during a memorial service to the late Queen Elizabeth II, held outdoors by the Orihuela City Council, in the September in scorching mid-day sun.

Mr Reardon was removed from the Branch Chair by the District Chairman for ‘disobeying a directive’, despite this being a regular occurrence, one that is replicated in hot cclimates around the world.

At a second memorial service the following week, it is claimed that the District Chairman was verbally abusive to both Mr Reardon, a retired major with over 30 years military service, and the branch Standard bearer, Mr Eddie Coleman.

Complaint

It is claimed that he shouted and screamed at both, and in the words of Mr Reardon, “He towered over me, just, inches from my face. I was covered in his spittle as he yelled at me in front of a large

retiring congregation. Even young recruits don’t get such treatment!”

Both Reardon and Coleman submitted written complaints about the disgraceful display of aggression by the Spain North Chairman, to the Overseas Secretary, Bob Chambers, the Legion Complaints Committee and the highest RBL body, it’s Membership Council.

Sent separately were a number of witness statements from observers, including at least one senior RBL o cial and yet, other than the suspension of Mr Reardon, which has resulted in the closure of the Orihuela Costa Branch, no action has been taken. Unfortunately, the branch has remained closed for almost 9 months, during which time members have been unable to meet, the branch assets have been frozen and despite having raised almost half a million euros toward the poppy appeal in recent years, the branch has been unable to carry out any further fund-raising activities.

Mr Reardon said: “So as the authorities continue to ‘sit on their hands’ in London, dozens of branch members have now either left the RBL or indicated that they will not be renewing their membership because of their ‘shoddy’ treatment. This would appear to be the ‘Duty of Care’ currently being applied to Orihuela Costa members in Spain by the hierarchy of the RBL.”

‘What the hell is going on with them?!’ Glastonbury fans left YAWNING during ‘mediocre’ and ‘boring’ Arctic Monkeys headline set as they slam the band for SLOWING DOWN their smash hits

Glastonbury festivalgoers were left disappointed by the Arctic Monkeys headline set as they heaped criticism on the band for slowing down their smash hits.

The Arctic Monkeys played the hotlyanticipated 90-minute headlining slot on Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage, but fans were left underwhelmed by the show, with one person even seen yawning in the audience.

La Nucía goes back to the Middle Ages

On 7th, 8th and 9th July a medieval market is set up in the village centre of La Nucía to commemorate that on the 9th of July 1705 the town charter was signed. This market has been held since 2005 and this year includes a medieval camp, fencing, bally dancing, medieval characters, troubadours, re shows, workshops for children and craft demonstrations.

More than forty authentic artisans have reserved a space to sell what they have made with their own hands. The Plaza Mayor and the streets surrounding the Town Hall will be lled with stalls with a wide variety of authentic crafts: ceramics and pottery, glass, designer and costume jewelry, carved wood and marquetry, handmade soaps and perfumes, wooden toys, patchwork and much more. Some artisans demonstrate their skills at the stall: you can watch the blacksmith working in his forge, or see how horn combs, pumpkin lamps, wooden sculptures or macramé jewelry are made, and two potters invite the public to make their own bowl. on the potter’s wheel.

In the gastronomic corner you

will nd food stalls: cheeses and sausages, nuts, jams and sweets, as well as a medieval tavern, a pulpería serving plates of octopus, and a jaima with Arab food. And while parents recover their strength there, children can participate in craft workshops, play board games or have a ride on the the mythological carousel.

A mecieval military camp is set up again in the Plaza de San José that o ers ample space for demonstrations of medieval combat, archery and fencing workshops. To complete the medieval atmosphere, troubadours, knights, a belly dancer, bu oons, beggars and other medieval characters will tour the streets and corners of the market and close the market every night with a great re show.

This year Amata, the craft associaition that organizes the market, exists 25 years and to celebrate its anniversary a contest will be held for unique pieces made by the participants: more than half of the participating artisans will exhibit a special piece at their stand and the public can vote for the piece that they think is

the most beautiful or the most original

The Market is set up in the oldest part of the village, around the Town Hall, and opens to the public on Friday the 7th, Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of July from 6 pm to midnight (or later...). There is ample parking (free) in the Auditorio de les Nits car park, 100 meters from the market and in a large open-air car park, just behind the old town. The complete market programme can be found at https://www. puebloartesano.es/lanucia.

Lead singer Alex Turner belted out a whole host of the Arctic Monkeys smash hits, including Mardy Bum and R U Mine, but the crowds were left confused and wondering what the ‘hell was going on’ with the band.

For many of the band’s big hitters, Alex - who has recently recovered from acute laryngitis, sang the tracks at a much slower tempo than the upbeat originals, with fans complaining that it made it di cult to sing along.

The rock band took to the stage hours after a surprise show from The Foo Fighters, who put on an incredible performance for the festival’s hour-long ‘secret’ slot, with several claiming that they should have headlined Friday’s show.

They used her for their own gains’: Katie Price’s mum slams her daughter’s ‘utterly toxic’ former lovers and brands

Peter Andre ‘controlling’ in scathing put down

Katie Price’s mum Amy has slammed her daughter’s former lovers, branding them ‘utterly toxic’.

Amy, 70, has candidly spoken about her famous daughter’s life in her new book The Last Word and she didn’t hold back when sharing her opinion when it came to Katie’s ex-husbands.

Meanwhile, in a new interview, the mum also went on to brand Katie’s rst husband Peter Andre as ‘controlling’, while also giving scathing comments about second husband Alex Reid, third husband Kieran Hayler and on/o ancé Carl Woods.

Speaking to The Sun about the 45-year-old ex-model’s spouses, Amy shared: ‘While thinking and writing about them, patterns began to emerge and I realised that so many of Kate’s husbands had similar character traits.

‘For example, I think it’s fair to say from my point of view that Dane Bowers and Peter Andre were men who liked to be in control and prioritised furthering their own careers.’

She added that Dane and Peter used their relationship with Katie for ‘their own gains’, before ‘quitting’ while they were ahead.

She continued: ‘Alex Reid and Kieran Hayler were complex exhibitionists who came along when Kate was at her lowest ebb and her most recent suitor is of a similar ilk. I always remember Alex referring to himself as Mrs Katie Price and that says it all.’

Amy went on to say that Kieran and Carl ‘craved fame’ and used her daughter as a ‘springboard’ for their ‘social media feeds’.

Manchester United goalkeeper

David de Gea is reportedly set to marry his singer girlfriend next weekend following the expiry of his current £375,000 contract with the club.

No extension has yet been signed with the Red Devils’ starting goalie of the last 12 seasons and United are said to be looking into Inter Milan shotstopper Andre Onana to replace him.

But de Gea’s mind is going to be focused more on his bride-to-be Edurne

Garcia and his wedding guests than his footballing career this time next week, the Spanish reports suggest.

What can I do to reduce my risk of skin cancer?

The Dermatology specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital warn of the increase in this type of tumour among the population, the incidence of which has tripled since the nineties. There are more than 100 types of skin cancer. “Of these,” explains Dr José Carlos Pascual, dermatologist at Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “we could say that basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma are the most common, in that order. Among these tumours, melanoma is the one associated with the highest mortality. “However,” warns the dermatologist, “most deaths from skin cancer are due to squamous cell carcinoma, which, although less aggressive, is much more common than melanoma.

The fundamental treatment for this type of tumour is its removal with adequate surrounding tissue margins. “This surgery has a very good prognosis and few complications. For more aggressive cases, although infrequent, we have radiotherapy, chemotherapy and, more recently, immunotherapy,” Dr Pascual points out.

The ABCDE rule for suspected melanoma

Dr Pascual advises to be alert to these

risk indicators:

A. Asymmetry: one half of a mole looks di erent from the other, they are not symmetrical.

B. Irregular borders; irregular, poorly de ned or blurred borders can be a sign of melanoma.

C. Colour: particularly dark or multicoloured moles may carry risks.

D. Diameter: a spot larger than six millimetres in diameter is a sign to see a dermatologist.

E. Evolution: a mole that changes in size, shape or colour and becomes itchy, in amed or bleeds should be checked by a specialist.

“A very interesting feature in our patients’ skin check-ups,” warns Dr Pascual, “is the sign of the ugly duckling, which means that a lesion that in a panoramic view is very di erent from the rest of the moles should catch our attention and make us consult a dermatologist.

Who is most prone to skin cancer?

There are various genetic mutations that predispose to melanoma and which are present in cases of familial melanoma. We also know that the lighter the skin, hair and eyes of patients, the less able they are to defend themselves against

ultraviolet radiation and the easier it is for them to develop melanoma, with redhaired individuals being the most at risk.

“As for the behaviours that most predispose to melanoma,” warns the dermatologist at Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “sunburns in childhood and adolescence are those most associated with melanoma. Furthermore, users

of ultraviolet tanning booths have a 20 times higher risk of developing melanoma in their lifetime”.

Can we prevent skin cancer?

To avoid melanoma and other cancers, the Dermatology Service at Quirónsalud Torrevieja recommends avoiding sun exposure at peak radiation times,

especially in children, patients with very fair skin, or those with predisposing factors for melanoma. Always use sunscreen and repeat its use every two hours, and more frequently if we are going to go into the water or sweat profusely. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat or cap and properly approved sunglasses.

The importance of scrapping your vehicle legally

Having worked in the scrap business on the Costa Blanca for over a decade, the team at Bradley Breakers could tell us all a horror story or two about people who thought they had scrapped their old car only to nd that the car was still registered, and even in some instanes driving around accumulating nes, many months later.

There are car owners on the Costa Blanca who have faced large nes after the vehicle they thought they’d dealt with was still driving around. Unfortunately, as long as your name remains on the document of ownership you are legally responsible for that vehicle.

Here in Spain the system of scrapping a vehicle is much di erent from anything you are likely to be used to Ireland or the UK. If you also have the added complication of a language barrier it is even more imperative that, when considering disposing of a vehicle, you use a company in which you have complete trust.

One such company is Bradley Breakers. They are experts in the eld and they can make the whole process simple and uncomplicated. Simply make the call, they will make you a cash o er for your vehicle and if accepted they will collect the vehicle on a tow

truck from your home ensuring the minimum of disruption and fuss for you.

They will then leave you with the necessary legal documentation, indicating that they have taken ownership of your old vehicle and then, once the vehicle has been o cially ‘scrapped’, you will be issued with the o cial DGT Certi cate (Baja).

Do be aware that, if this is something that you are currently considering, you need to ensure that your vehicle is scrapped by 31 December to avoid any further SUMA bills.

Bradley Breakers said, “We can’t overemphasise the importance of doing the ‘baja’ of a vehicle properly in Spain. It saves so much hassle and heartache further along the line doing it in the correct way with a trustworthy company.”

Bradley Breakers, which employs over 40 people, now have an impressive new scrapyard consisting of a 20,000 square metre site on which they house a 3,000 sqm warehouse in which they store thousands of used parts which they have removed from cars. All parts are recorded on a computer stock system and stacked on racking within the warehouse. You can even buy parts online. So, if you are looking for a component for your car, before you buy

new, you could save time and money by going directly to Bradley Breakers. At any one time, they also have over 2000 cars on-site so they will always be able to nd that elusive part from a small wheelnut to a complete gearbox or even an engine.

Contact Bradley Breakers Central in English on (0034) 607 848 332 or drop an e-mail to bradleybreakerscatral1@ outlook.com. Facebook Bradley Karl Thompson. The new location is Poligono 18, C/Novelda 2B, Crevillente 03330.

The angling scene

Saturday the 24th of June saw 42 anglers lining the banks of the popular El Bosquet Fishery complex at San Felipe De Neri, some 4km from Catral, and I am of the belief that this is the rst time the complex has had all 42 pegs booked and with another 2 or 3 names on the waiting list.

The reason for this absolute sell out was to show our love, appreciation, and respect for a lifelong friend and a member of Abbey Angling and their sister club, Rod & Reels, who, sadly, passed away on 5th of May…. Terry “Mr Fixit” Screen….and this was his inaugural Memorial Match.

I suppose it was apt that the Memorial Winner on the day was his close friend and event organizer, who drew Peg 9 and the very proli c 8-16 section. Those with knowledge of El

Bosquet knew that the winner would come from this area, and they were correct, for Ian Brown made no mistake and took 44 carp and a couple of Mullet for a run-away winning net of 40kg 080grms.

When Marlene Hutchinson, the sole lady angler, drew Peg 17, many knew she would do well as peg 17 is a ‘method feeder peg’ and has a residential shoal of carp, but they are so di cult to get away from the reeds, but Marlen’s prowess with the feeder proved too much for them and she came a very credible Runner-up with 25kg 100 grammes.

There was much delight and quite some, errmmm “urine extraction” for her husband, Dave Hutchinson, could only manage just over 9kg from Peg 19.

Marlene was quite content with kicking her hubby’s butt AGAIN.

Neil McBirnie, the venue expert and tipped to win when he drew Peg 6 on the proli c section of the venue. He came close, but sadly, no cigar for his 23kg 060 grammes was way o the mark but good enough for 3rd place, just beating Mick Hill on Peg 2 who weighed in 22kg 300 grammes.

In 5th place was Nick ‘End peg again’ Bastock who, when drawing peg 40, was greeted with moans and expletives! Nick weighed in 19kg 700 grammes to win his section and take home a nice ‘white envelope’.

After the event, many went for a welcoming shandy – not to mention chip butties (which are always donated by Angie of Café Uno) – at Café UNO in Catral.

The photo shows Marlene with the Runners-up trophy, kindly donated by NTT Bait & Tackle of Torrevieja.
