Summer care guaranteed by local health service

In response to recent criticism about the lack of a summer plan to handle the surge in patients, the Torrevieja Health Department has unveiled its comprehensive care coverage plan. The management has assured the public that they will reinforce their sta to ensure 100% care coverage in critical services such as emergencies, primary care, and hospitalization. Even external consultations will see a signi cant

boost, with coverage expected to reach 60%. The oors and wards will remain fully operational, while key non-assistance support services will continue to be provided.

To make this plan a reality, the Ministry of Health has allocated a budget of €2,847,532.00 for the 2023 Vacation Plan. The department has been granted authorisation to ll vacancies since 1st June, and the process of recruiting

professionals through the employment exchange has already begun.

In addition to bolstering sta ng levels at the hospital, the number of professionals in Primary Care will also be increased. The focus of this summer’s care strategy is to promote urgent care across the department, with Continuous Care Points (PAC) in the coastal area operating 24 hours a day.

To reinforce the emergency services at coastal health centres, an additional doctor will be available in the morning and afternoon shifts. Planned vacation coverage for medical personnel has also been included in the approved plan. Furthermore, all PACs will have an additional doctor providing 12-hour coverage on weekends, and all health centres will remain open during regular hours.

With the implementation of this comprehensive care coverage plan, the Torrevieja Health Department aims to address the concerns raised by the public and provide high-quality

healthcare services to the population during the summer months.

Concern over scooter injuries

Meanwhile, emergency doctors are sounding the alarm about a surge in serious injuries resulting from the use of scooters. These personal mobility vehicles (VMP) have experienced a signi cant boom in popularity as a means of transportation in towns and cities in recent years. Unfortunately, many users are unaware of the risks associated with scooter use, leading to a rise in scooter accidents that can have severe or even fatal consequences.

Emergency doctors agree that local hospitals now treat more serious head injuries from scooter accidents than from any other type of vehicle.

The victims arriving at the Accident and Emergency Department come from various age groups. Although many are young people, a signi cant number are over 50 years old.

Scooter riders absorb the impact

themselves since their bodies act as the vehicle’s chassis, resulting in severe injuries.

The consensus is that stricter legislation is needed for scooter use. Currently, helmets are not mandatory except in areas lacking speci c regulations. A recent study published by the Mapfre Foundation and the Mapfre Centre for Experimentation and Road Safety (Cesvimap) revealed a concerning trend. In 2021, 13 individuals lost their lives in Spain due to electric scooter accidents—an increase compared to the six deaths recorded in 2020 and ve deaths in 2019.

Karen continued: “We want to know if the council can o er us a possible new site, maybe a disused sports area close by or refuse to change our current clubs use? We are hoping that looking after the older members of the community is important to the local government and the local community.

“There is a bowls club at Oasis and we have been exploring the possibility of using its facilities. However, there is a law which states that clubs cannot share if entering the leagues.”

The members are so passionate about their club that many have stated that if the club has to merge or share facilities they will give up bowling, which is worrying from a health, tness and social point of view.

This week the Costa Blanca People was contacted by La Siesta Bowling Club, which after 25 years is about to be made homeless. The majority of the 70-plus members have been members since it opened and play on a regular basis.

The club and its members have been given notice to quit the club in September as the land and property has been sold and will be ‘repurposed’ by its new owners.

Karen Kirk said: “We believe that given there is a new, €4.2 million leisure park that is currently in construction bordering the rear of our club, the prospective purchaser has decided that

they might make a killing by changing the use.”

Of course, bars and restaurants are much more pro table than a bowling club but the members are heartbroken.

The club, which is open 6 days a week, is not only for green bowling to keep us t but is also a social club for lonely widows and widowers. The more than 70 members have ages ranging from 60+ to 90 years of age and are asking “where else is there for us to go?”

All bowlers in Spain have to be licenced by the national federation in order to play and the members of La Siesta Bowling Club are federated and legally recognised by the Valencian

Determined to investigate every avenue, Karen is going to the LLB lawmakers meeting on the 20th June to clarify the laws and put the clubs case to them.

Man drowns at Cabo Roig

A bather died on Sunday at Cabo Roig beach in Orihuela Costa. At 11:45am, the Emergency Information and Coordination Center (CICU) was noti ed that a man had been pulled from the water on Cabo Roig beach. The bather was unconscious and witnesses at the scene began to perform cardiac heart massage.

LIMITED STOCK ON REDUCED PRICED DEMO CARS Record tourist numbers for April

Spain experienced a signi cant surge in international tourism during the month of April, welcoming a record-breaking gure of 7.2 million visitors from abroad. This number represents an 18.5% increase compared to the same month in 2022 and a 1.2% rise compared to April 2019, before the onset of the global pandemic. The data, released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) of Spain, reveals that not only did the arrival of tourists surpass preCovid levels, but spending also exceeded expectations.

Among the top countries contributing to Spain’s tourism boom, the United Kingdom led the way with 1.4 million visitors in April, an 8.7% increase from the same month in 2022. Hot on its heels came France and Germany with more than one million visitors each. The USA is the country with the highest increase of tourists at 75.4%.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez took to social media to celebrate the news, tweeting, “Spain has broken the record for foreign tourists in the best April in history.” He also made a veiled reference to the upcoming general election on 23rd July, stating, “This good economic news cannot be hidden by the far-right parties.”

Foreign tourism plays a crucial

role in the Spanish economy, typically contributing around 12.3% to the country’s GDP and supporting over 2.6 million jobs.

In 2019, Spain was the second most visited country globally, attracting 83.7 million tourists throughout the year. However, the outbreak of Covid-19 led to a drastic decline in visitor numbers in 2020, with just 19 million tourists, the lowest gure since 1969, representing a decrease of over 80%.

During 2021, Spain experienced a partial recovery, with 31.1 million international tourists visiting the country.

The Spanish government had set a target of 45 million foreign visitors for that year, roughly half of the pre-pandemic level.

In 2022, the number of foreign visitors reached approximately 70 million, still 15% lower than the 2019 gure.

Rebound

The latest data released for April 2023 indicates that Spain’s tourism sector has nally rebounded after more than three years of lower visitor gures compared to the preCovid era. “This extraordinary data demonstrates, once again, that Spain is at the forefront of world tourism, that tourism recovery is complete, and that the government’s policies work,”

declared Héctor Gómez, the Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism.

Projections for May to October 2023 suggest that Spain will receive between 52.3 and 54.8 million foreign tourists, slightly more than the gures for the same months in 2019. In the rst four months of 2023 alone, Spain has already welcomed nearly 21 million international tourists, representing an impressive growth rate of 32.4% compared to the previous year.

Notably, April 2023 also witnessed record-breaking tourist spending, reaching a total of €8.48 billion. This gure represents a signi cant 22.7% increase compared to 2022 and a remarkable 20.2% increase compared to the best prepandemic data. According to the INE, the average spending per tourist in April stood at €1,172, marking a 3.6% annual increase. Daily average spending also rose by 11.6% to €173.

The rise in tourist spending can be attributed in part to substantial price increases that have occurred over the past 18 months. Accommodation prices in Spain have surged by an average of 24%, while tourist packages and restaurant prices have risen by 17% and 15%, respectively, compared to prepandemic levels.

Air-Taxis are about to become a reality in Spain and are predicted to slash travel times and emissions. NextNorth says the blueprint for a dronepowered ‘cab’ it unveiled during the Qatar World Cup will allow the public to get to local or regional destinations 80 percent faster than usual.

The eVTOL will be rolled out in the Balearic Islands, which residents usually travel between via passenger ferry, and will even be suitable for moving around each island.

Their name stands for Electric Vertical Take-O and Landing, and customers can either book an entire eVTOL to themselves, or just a seat in one that is already covering a certain

route. ‘Ridesharing’ means airtravel across the Balearics will be cheaper but does not cut emissions – because there are none.

Given that they are operated by drones and on electricity, they are environmentally-friendly, and practically net-zero in terms of their carbon footprint if they are recharged with electrical power from renewable sources.

NextNorth is now planning to spend time in Balearic skies, identifying key transport routes from helicopters, and working out where and how to create the infrastructure needed for their airborne vehicles.

They will need to construct ‘verti-ports’ and ‘logistics lockers’ that connect these ight

paths with existing land-based transport. Once locations have been earmarked and planning permission obtained, NextNorth will put the job of building these facilities in the hands of Bluenest.

As yet, no idea has been given of cost, so it is not clear whether people will continue to use ferries, cars or road-taxis if they work out cheaper, even if they are slower. The interior design has not been revealed beyond the blueprint shown in Qatar, although NextNorth assures their vehicles are ‘very comfortable’ for passengers.

If the Balearic Island trial goes well there are plans to roll out the service into other areas of Spain.

Man jailed for brutal stabbing of partner in Guardamar

A shocking incident unfolded in broad daylight in Guardamar, as a 42-year-old man of Columbian nationality, stabbed his partner ve times in a violent assault. The victim, a 32-year-old woman, also Colombian, survived the attack and is currently recovering in Torrevieja hospital.

The terrifying incident occurred at approximately 6 o’clock in the evening at the intersection of Jorge Juan Avenue and Cervantes, near the beach in Guardamar town centre. The attacker confronted his former partner at the entrance to her home and unleashed a brutal assault, using extreme violence. The gruesome attack left a pool of blood on the street and even splattered the window of a nearby commercial establishment.

Witnesses rushed to the victim’s aid, including the sta of a nearby pharmacy and a neighbour who happened to be a nurse. They provided initial medical assistance before the woman was transported to Torrevieja hospital for further treatment. Fortunately, her injuries, including a pierced lung and other minor wounds, are no longer life-threatening.

The alleged attacker attempted to ee the scene on foot but was hit by a taxi at a roundabout on the Santa Ana industrial estate in Guardamar.

The collision left him injured, but he continued trying to make his escape until he was arrested by Guardia Civil o cers. Shortly after receiving medical attention at Torrevieja hospital, the man was presented before the Court

of Instruction Number 1 and Violence against Women, where the presiding judge ordered his immediate imprisonment.

Investigations have revealed that the assailant had travelled from Elche to Guardamar with the intention of discussing their breakup with his former partner. However, the encounter quickly turned violent, culminating in the brutal stabbing. The weapon used in the attack, a bladed knife with a 16-centimeter blade, and it is believed that the attack only stopped because the knife broke – probably saving the victims life.

It has been discovered that the victim had recently relocated to Guardamar to work as a carer for an elderly person, merely a week prior to the tragic incident.

Pet holidays promoted across Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca Tourist Board has organised a special program to demonstrate the range of pet-friendly options available to tourists visiting the area with their beloved pets. The initiative aimed to highlight the diverse holiday experiences that pet owners can enjoy while ensuring the comfort and enjoyment of their animal companions.

Under the guidance of the Board’s director, Jose Mancebo, two prominent social media in uencers from Belgium and France, boasting a combined following of nearly two million people, were invited to stay in the region for several days. The in uencers embarked on a tour of various towns and cities, including Altea, Benidorm, Denia, El Campello, and Santa Pola, to personally witness and showcase the pet-friendly o erings available.

Throughout their stay, the in uencers participated in an array of activities designed to accommodate pets, such as kayaking, cycling and trekking. By experiencing these activities rst-hand, the in uencers could provide their followers with an authentic glimpse into the kind of pet-friendly experiences that await them in the Costa Blanca region.

Jose Mancebo expressed

his enthusiasm for the initiative, saying: “The pet-friendly trips cater to a niche market whose growth warrants the development of specialized infrastructure, resources, and spaces that are adapted to accommodate pets.” He further revealed plans to launch a dedicated campaign targeting visitors who wish to bring their pets along during their vacation.

This latest e ort builds upon last year’s call by the Costa Blanca Tourist Board to establish a recognisable emblem or logo that identi es tourist attractions and establishments open to hosting animals. By creating this distinctive symbol, the Board aims to make it easier for pet owners to identify places that are welcoming to their furry friends, thereby promoting greater inclusivity and convenience for tourists with pets.

The Costa Blanca region is renowned for its stunning beaches, picturesque landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. By actively promoting pet-friendly experiences, the Tourist Board hopes to attract an even wider range of travellers

Hottest spring on record for Spain

In a recent report, Spain’s state meteorological agency, AEMET, has revealed that this year’s spring season has broken records, becoming the hottest and second driest in the country’s history. The data provided by AEMET highlighted a continuation of the extreme heat that plagued Spain in 2022, a year that marked the hottest in the nation’s recorded history since 1961. Additionally, April 2023 registered the highest temperatures and lowest rainfall ever documented.

their capacity, continuing a downward trend as reported by Spain’s Ecological Transition Ministry.

who wish to explore these beautiful surroundings without leaving their pets behind. The initiative not only bene ts tourists but also stimulates the local economy by encouraging the growth of a specialized petfriendly tourism sector.

As the social media in uencers from Belgium and France prepare to share their experiences with their substantial online followings, it is expected that the positive coverage will generate increased interest in pet-friendly holidays in the Costa Blanca.

According to Rubén Del Campo, spokesperson for AEMET, the average temperature during this year’s spring reached 14.2 degrees Celsius, surpassing the reference period average from 1991 to 2020 by 1.8 degrees Celsius. It also exceeded the previous warmest spring, which occurred in 1997, by 0.3 degrees Celsius.

The scorching heat was accompanied by a signi cant lack of rainfall, exacerbating Spain’s ongoing drought crisis. Despite some precipitation in the past month, the country’s reservoirs are currently at a concerning 47.4% of

Del Campo raised alarm bells over the ecological consequences of this heatwave, particularly on the marine life and its reproductive capabilities. He pointed out that surface water temperatures in 2022 were the highest on record since at least 1940. The rising temperatures endanger the marine ecosystem and pose a threat to the reproduction of various species.

The impact of the weather conditions extended beyond marine life. Del Campo emphasised that the high temperatures had severe implications for human health and ecosystems, increasing the likelihood of forest res. These adverse e ects were observed both on coastal regions and inland areas of Spain.

Looking ahead, Del Campo predicted an “extremely hot” summer with a possibility of sporadic rainstorms. However, he noted that the contribution of the El Niño weather phenomenon to the expected

high temperatures remained unclear. El Niño is a cyclical warming of the world’s oceans and weather patterns, which experts anticipate will occur later this year.

In response to the dire situation, the Spanish government announced measures worth 2.2 billion euros last month to combat the drought crisis. The funding includes support for urban water reuse initiatives and additional aid for struggling farmers, as Spain is Europe’s leading producer and exporter of fresh fruits and vegetables. In April, the country requested emergency funds from the European Union due to the alarming prospects for this year’s crops.

As Spain grapples with scorching temperatures, water scarcity, and the looming threat to its agriculture, e orts are underway to mitigate the impact on both the environment and the economy. The government’s emergency measures seek to alleviate the immediate challenges while paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.

Should you keep hold of UK investments in Spain?

However well we have settled into our new lives in Spain, most UK nationals living here maintain some British habits. Whether it is a Sunday roast or watching British soaps, there are some ties we do not want to lose.

The same often applies for UK savings and investments. While many expats prefer to stick with what’s familiar, just how suitable are these arrangements for Spain?

Premium Bonds and ISAs

Launched 65 years ago, around 23 million Britons have over £100 billion in Premium Bonds today. Even though they do not provide any interest earnings or capital growth – which means their value will be eroded over time by in ation – the possibility of winning a large prize continues to appeal.

In Spain, investment income is added to your general income for the year and taxed at the scale rates of tax of up to 54% in the Valencian community.

ISAs too are fully taxable in Spain in the hands of Spanish residents at the corresponding savings income tax rates up to 26%. This applies to income and gains from cash and share ISAs. Some expats mistakenly think that since they are UK investments they do not need to be declared in Spain, but if you are tax resident here they need to be declared and taxed.

Bank interest

Similarly, although bank interest in the UK is tax-free under a certain threshold for UK residents, it is taxable for Spanish residents at the savings rates between 19% and 26%.

With interest rates for savings still very low and while the cost of living creeps up, many UK savings accounts are failing to outpace in ation, so it is worth exploring alternative structures for your money.

Alternative investment structures for Spain

Highly tax-e cient opportunities are available to residents of Spain. At Seagate we have a range of tax e cient products designed for Spanish residents, from household names such as Prudential International.

Rojales Town Council becomes a partner in the European ERASMUS+ project

Rojales Town Council announces its participation as a partner in the European ERASMUS+ project entitled “Drivers Seat: Time to Take the Wheel Again”. This exciting project aims to promote the exchange of experiences, challenges and possible solutions between young people aged 18 to 25 from ve di erent countries, according to the Councillor for Culture, Inmaculada Chazarra.

Through this project, participants are encouraged to support each other in the pursuit of their personal goals and discover new strategies to achieve self-realisation. Therefore the knowledge and experiences gained during the project will enable participants to encourage and motivate other young people to rediscover their perspectives and pursue their passions in life.

The meeting will take place in Appingedam, the Netherlands, from 12 to 21 August, a strategic location near Amsterdam. In this sense, the Rojales Town Council is looking for eight young participants

from the municipality to enjoy this enriching experience. It is important to note that participation in the project is completely free for the selected young people, explains the councillor.

In this regard, it should be noted that next Tuesday 13 June, at 1 p.m. there will be a presentation on the project in the multipurpose room of the IES, presenting, explaining and answering questions to attendees.

“Drivers Seat: Time to Take the Wheel Again” aims to have a signi cant impact on all the organisations involved. Among the main expected results are: developing the capacity to manage Erasmus+ projects by working with young people from disadvantaged communities or isolated groups, learning from their experience; strengthening the capacity of organisations to involve young people in future programmes; motivating young people to nd solutions to their problems and to actively participate in their communities, encouraging greater civic participation or

increasing the inclusion of young people through their active participation in current and future actions.

It also aims to improve cooperation on an international scale; provide participants with the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences with other participants and organisations; enable young people to initiate and lead public events that promote intercultural dialogue; and enhance the organisation’s standing in the local community.

The initiative represents a unique opportunity for young people in Rojales to broaden their horizons, share experiences with people from di erent cultures and acquire valuable skills for their personal and professional development, says Inmaculada Chazarra.

GBP

It has been a fairly thin news week in the UK, with only limited economic data releases to drive change among key sterling crosses. Perhaps the most signi cant update came in the shape of the latest S&P Global/CIPS Services PMI, which bucked a broader weaker trend elsewhere by increasing to 55.2 over the past month, having been expected to have remained steady at 55.1. A steep increase in prices for rms, as well as rising wage costs will no doubt be adding to the pressure on the BoE to maintain ongoing rate hikes.

Having declined over the previous month, UK House Prices atlined during May, according to the Halifax in their latest report. However, on an annual basis prices have now decreased by 1%, which represents the rst year-on-year decline since the Halifax report began life back in 2012. At the time of writing, the pound has also experienced a fairly solid week. Having declined from its recent high of over 1.2600 in early May, GBP/USD found worthy support below 1.2400, and has remained comfortably above that level for most of the week, with the pair moving back over 1.2550 on Friday morning. GBP/EUR has been even more rewarding for sterling bulls, with the pair rising from below 1.1300 at the end of April, to mark a yearly high at over 1.1660 last week. However, the pound has so far been unable to consolidate those gains. GBP/CAD is perhaps the one outlier, slipping from above 1.7000 to around 1.6650, with that stronger Loonie dominating proceedings of late (see CAD).

Next week is dominated by key growth and employment data, as we edge ever-closer to the next BoE meeting. Much the same as

GBP / EUR UPDATE

most developed nations, unemployment has remained impressively low in the UK, with the key ILO unemployment rate below 4%. Overall growth has also beat previous dire predictions, and there is evidence that this trend might continue.

EURO

It was not a great week for Europe again, with con rmation yesterday (Thursday) that the region has now slipped into a technical recession during Q1, according to data released by Eurostat, with the economy shrinking by 0.1% over the period. That followed a revised 0.1% decline during Q4, having previously been forecast to atline. A technical recession is widely accepted as two consecutive quarters of negative growth, so assuming that Eurostat do not revise Q1’s numbers higher, the region has now fallen into a recession, albeit by the smallest of small margins. The move was perhaps not completely surprising, given that Germany, the region’s largest economy and Europe’s engine, said last month that it had already slipped into a recession.

The latest German factory orders continued the weakening data trend this week, declining by a further 0.4% through April, bringing the yearly total down to -9.9% in the process. German Industrial Production actually beat estimates, rising by 1.6% on an annual basis during April, having been projected to have risen by 1.2% over the period. However, the monthly gain of 0.3% fell short of expectations at 0.6%. There was also further evidence of weakening consumer activity, with Regional Retail Sales atlining over the past month, having been expected to have increased by 0.2%. The ECB’s latest consumer expectations survey also reported households predict annual in ation to fall from 5%, to 4.1% during April.

Elche – a city created in an oasis of palm trees

Elche traces its origins back to the rst settlements that were located near the Vinalopó River, taking advantage of both its water bene ts and the geographical situation, enabling them to connect with the sea and the inlands. The Iberian World was a notable contributor in creating some of the splendour in the Iberian Peninsula, developing customs and culture which absorbed many Mediterranean in uences, and contributed to building its own identity. In the 10th century, after a period of occupation through scattered farmhouse settlements, the origins of the current city of Elche began to emerge in the Islamic medina of Ils. This gave way to the magni cence of a medieval city that built an irrigation system and made great use of the local environment, which has given us a World

Heritage Site: The Elche Palm Grove. The melting pot of cultures made up of Jews, Muslims and Christians contributed notably to the development of the walled city of Elche, still visible in some of the monuments that are part of its historic core. The granting of city status in 1871 by the monarch Amadeo I of Savoy, meant the transition from town to city for a population of barely 20,000 inhabitants. This started to show signs of the beginning process of industrialization, in which the footwear industry became the highlight.

Students from “Vides de La Mata” employment workshop and Apanee close Natural History Museum visitor season

The last day of the guided tours in the Museum of Natural History that the Department of Culture has organized for schools this opening season, between April and June, will be next Friday, June 23, and will visit students of the employment workshop Vides de la Mata II of the City of Torrevieja in the shift of 10:00 hours, and students of the Association of Parents of Students with Special Educational Needs (APANEE), in the shift of 11:30 hours.

The last guided tours of this season in English and Spanish

for the general public and families will be on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June, respectively.

All the groups have been full for some days now, but there is still some space left for these last two days, for which we remind you that you can register through the link http:// turismodetorrevieja.com/ web/?page_id=18911.

If you have not been able to register, we also remind you that the Museum is open from Friday to Sunday until Friday, 30th June, for free visits during the hours indicated.

The Natural History Museum of Torrevieja is the only one of its kind in the whole province of Alicante and contains a large representation of the biodiversity of species that surround us, both marine and terrestrial, such as skeletons of turtles, bottlenose and striped dolphins, n whales, collections of original nests (abandoned after the breeding period), specimens donated by individuals of special relevance and others so singular and unique that they have been claimed by museums in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Paris.

After getting divorced from my husband; I am no better off and no further forward. After the final decree, he has not moved out. The divorce took two years, and he was still living at home but had moved into the spare bedroom. I am not sure why I put up with this, but he said he didn’t have much work coming in (he’s a builder and works for himself), and then Covid, and I just went along with things for a quiet life. He also said he was not able to pay towards the housekeeping, which was one of the reasons why I wanted to split up in the first place; he did not contribute much to any part of our lives together and would go off down to the local bar every night rather than spend time with me. It’s six months now and he’s still not making any noise about moving out. He has work now so I don’t see what the problem is. And, I think he might be seeing a woman because he is making an effort with his clothes lately, and has bought a new motorbike which I know cost a few thousand euros. Our grown children keep telling me that he is making a fool

out of me all over again. What can I do to get him to leave?

Point blank tell him to go. Your mistake, as I am sure you know, was allowing him to stay after you had decided on separating. If you find having a conversation difficult, then ask your Solicitor to write a letter giving him two weeks to move out, and place some boxes and a suitcase in his room. Perhaps

your children can be present when he is confronted with what he has to do, so that things don’t escalate if you feel nervous in making the push. He hasn’t paid you any housekeeping for years, you’ve fed and watered him, but he can find the money to go out drinking - and, you also suspect he is seeing a woman; this situation cannot continue. You need to move on from the divorce, and so does he, but right now he has it very cushy doesn’t he.

WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@ COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

Third CDT meeting of Sicted held in Torrevieja

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, the Councillor for Tourism and Deputy Mayor of the City Council, Rosario Martinez, and the president of AMFA Torrevieja, Mari Carmen Mora, attended this III Solidarity Meeting SICTED Companies, which have been able to share the experiences of all participants.

Firstly, the Improvement Group took place, whose objective is to generate collective initiatives for the integral improvement of the destination. The SICTED model o ers the possibility of creating discussion and debate groups (improvement groups) in which the di erent agents involved in tourism activity and in the SICTED model participate in order to identify, propose and implement improvements in the destination.

Afterwards, the Torrevieja Tourism Centre (CdT) o ered a rice tasting to all the companies participating in the SICTED project, which is promoted by the Secretary of State for Tourism with the support of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP). Its main objective is to achieve a homogeneous level of quality of tourist services, both of those tourist services themselves and those which, without being

tourist services, contribute to the formation of the tourist experience of the destination.

Torrevieja joined this system in 2014, in which Turisme Comunitat Valenciana nances the training, assessment and evaluation services involved in the implementation of this system, so it does not involve any cost for tourist services; all this through the collaboration agreement that the regional administration maintains with the Chambers of Commerce of Alicante.

Currently in Torrevieja there are 75 distinguished companies and another 17 new ones have begun training and advice for the December committee.

It is a project to improve the quality of tourist destinations promoted by the Secretary of State for Tourism (SETUR), with

the support of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), which works with tourist services of up to 37 di erent trades, with the ultimate goal of improving the experience and satisfaction of tourists.

SICTE Destinos-SICTED is a methodology that provides a comprehensive and permanent quality management system in a tourist destination. In the two solidarity meetings that took place prior to the pandemic, a donation was made to Alimentos Solidarios Torrevieja and the second meeting served to raise funds for the Alzheimer Association of Relatives and Friends of Torrevieja, and thanks to a large part of the contribution of Amigo 24, it was possible to donate a crane to the association.

Ronqueo at WOW Beach: an innovative experience

A great start to the WOW Beach season with a fascinating event: the live cutting of a blue n tuna weighing around 300 kilograms

WOW Beach by Las Colinas successfully celebrated its opening of the summer season with a spectacular event that surprised and fascinated those who had the opportunity to experience it live: the ronqueo or cutting of a blue n tuna weighing around 300 kilograms.

Two experienced cutters were in charge of cutting up the blue n tuna in front of the audience, who enjoyed the show while sipping a sparkling wine and enjoying an ‘Amélie’ oyster with views overlooking the Mediterranean. An unforgettable multi-sensory experience which was followed by a tasting of various dishes made with blue n tuna, using di erent culinary techniques, created by Fonsi Lillo, chef at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club. Several of them belong to the umawa restaurant menu which, together with WOW Beach, il Palco and unik, integrates the rich and varied gastronomic o er at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club.

Ronqueo is the traditional handcutting of blue n tuna. It is an ageold technique that dates back to Phoenician times and is particularly popular in the shing villages of Cadiz, where this blue sh is caught every spring using the ancestral almadraba (tuna trap) technique. The experts in this technique cut up the blue n tuna step by step, from which 24 pieces are obtained for consumption. The word ronqueo comes from the particular sound that the knife makes when it

touches the spine of this magni cent sh. WOW Beach, the beach club open to the public at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club was in charge of hosting this show, considered of cultural interest, for the rst time on the beach of La Glea, in Dehesa de Campoamor.

According to the Operations Director at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club, Javier Rodríguez, “with this event we aimed to position WOW Beach as a place to experience unique gastronomic events. Holding a ronqueo in such a marine environment becomes a sensory experience destined to captivate all foodies. We will repeat this experience in the years to come.”

WOW Beach opens its doors today  WOW Beach by Las Colinas opened its doors for the summer season last friday. This free access beach club is located in a privileged setting, on the seafront of La Glea beach, in Dehesa de Campoamor (Orihuela). The swimming area has an in nity pool with views overlooking the Mediterranean, sunbeds and Balinese beds, as well as a massage service. The restaurant area has been expanded and improved this year and, as a novelty, from July it will serve dinners from the menu of the famous Italian restaurant il Palco, located at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club.

In June, WOW Beach will open from Friday to Sunday. The swimming pool will be open from 10am to 6pm and the restaurant from 12pm to 4pm.

Why your health matters now more than ever

In today’s world, the importance of maintaining good health cannot be overstated. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it has become even more critical to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. Many people are struggling with their health due to the pandemic’s impact, including mental health challenges, isolation, and lifestyle changes.

At this time, it is crucial to prioritise our health and well-being, and we can start by understanding the importance of a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle is not just about eating nutritious foods or exercising regularly; it encompasses all aspects of our lives, including our physical, mental, and emotional health.

Physical Health

Physical health is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. It includes engaging in regular physical activity, getting enough sleep, and eating a balanced diet. Engaging in physical activity has many bene ts, including weight management, reduced risk of chronic diseases, and improved mental health.

Getting enough sleep is also essential for maintaining good health. Lack of sleep can lead to fatigue, decreased productivity, and increased risk of developing chronic diseases. Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night to function at their best.

Eating a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is also crucial for good physical health. A

well-balanced diet provides essential nutrients, reduces the risk of chronic diseases, and promotes overall wellbeing.

Mental Health

Mental health is equally important as physical health. Mental health is about our emotional and psychological wellbeing and a ects how we think, feel, and behave. Good mental health enables us to handle life’s challenges, cope with stress, and build healthy relationships.

With the pandemic’s impact, many people are experiencing stress, anxiety, and depression. It is essential to take care of our mental health by engaging in activities that promote relaxation, such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises. It is also important to seek professional help if we are struggling with our mental health.

Emotional Health

Emotional health is about our ability to express and manage our emotions e ectively. Emotions play a vital role in our overall well-being, and it is essential to have healthy emotional responses to life’s challenges.

One way to promote emotional health is to develop healthy coping mechanisms, such as journaling, talking to a friend, or engaging in a hobby.

It is also essential to have healthy relationships and to surround ourselves with positive people who support our emotional well-being.

As we navigate through this pandemic, it is essential to remember that our health is not just about us; it

a ects those around us as well. When we take care of ourselves, we can protect those we care about and contribute positively to our communities.

In addition to the pandemic, there are many other reasons why our health matters now more than ever. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer continue to be leading causes of death worldwide. Many of these diseases are preventable with healthy lifestyle choices.

By prioritising our health and making healthy choices, we can reduce our risk of developing chronic diseases and improve our overall quality of life. Making small changes to our daily routine can have a signi cant impact on our health, such as taking a walk after dinner, practicing portion control, or taking time to unwind after a long day.

It is also important to take care of our mental health, which has a signi cant impact on our physical health. Stress, anxiety, and depression can a ect our immune system, making us more susceptible to illness. By practicing healthy coping mechanisms and seeking professional help when needed, we can maintain good mental health and protect our overall well-being.

One of the keys to maintaining good health is to make it a priority in our lives. It can be challenging to prioritise our health when we have busy schedules and competing demands, but it is essential to make time for our wellbeing.

We can start by setting small, achievable goals for ourselves, such as drinking more water, taking a 10-minute

walk each day, or scheduling regular check-ups with our healthcare provider. By incorporating healthy habits into our daily routine, we can make them a permanent part of our lifestyle and reap the bene ts of good health.

In conclusion, our health and wellbeing have never been more critical than they are now. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of prioritising our physical, mental, and emotional health. By making healthy choices and taking care of ourselves, we can protect those

we care about and contribute positively to our communities.

Let’s make our health a priority and take steps to improve our overall wellbeing. By doing so, we can live happier, healthier lives and create a brighter future for ourselves and those around us.

The park has donated 10 shelter-boxes to the Valencian Ornithological Society so that the bats can breed in them.

The pilot experience of bat conservation, promoted by the Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park, is going to be implemented in the wild ecosystems of the Marina Baixa region. The project began six years ago with the installation of the rst wooden boxes-shelters so that the bats could occupy them and breed in the park’s facilities.

Now this conservation project has gone beyond the gates of Terra Natura Benidorm thanks to the collaboration of the Valencian Ornithological Society, through its Las Marinas delegation, to work in the wild ecosystems of the area. In this latest phase of the

initiative, 10 new refuge boxes have been created and donated to the Valencian Ornithological Society.

The Conservation department of Terra Natura Benidorm, through a workshop held with the families who visit the park, has built these 10 shelterboxes to provide shelter for the wild bats that live in the area and thus help the conservation of this species. The park carries out two checks a year on the boxes installed in its enclosure and sends the data to specialised websites.

Of the 27 di erent species of bats that inhabit Spain, there are 3 types of bats: ssuriform bats that take refuge in cracks, forest bats and cave bats. This type of arti cial roosts are occupied by the ssurid and forest species, which

are the ones that tend to frequent urban areas.

The shelters are made of wood, a more e cient material for thermal insulation, and in the form of at, narrow boxes, which mimic the ssures or cracks that often occur in trees. These shelters will serve for the summer season, which is the breeding season for this animal. However, in the winter season, bats seek more climatically isolated enclaves for hibernation and do not usually use them.

As explained by Terra Natura Benidorm’s conservation biologist, Elisa Gozalbes, this initiative has two objectives. On the one hand, “it seeks to spread the importance of

conserving the natural habitats of these species, which bring so much bene t to natural ecosystems as pest controllers”, and on the other hand it aims to “raise awareness of the role that bats play in the balance of ecosystems, thus ending the bad and unjusti ed reputation they have”.

The team of experts at Terra Natura Benidorm reminds us that these animals are protected in the Valencian Community and nationally. Therefore, if they occupy the refuge, they cannot be handled and it is necessary to obtain a permit from the Generalitat to be able to interact with the refugebox.

Conservation threats

One of the most serious

conservation problems a ecting wild bat populations is the loss of their habitat, due to the transformation of the landscape and the overexploitation of forests. In addition, the widespread use of agricultural pesticides reduces the number of potential prey and leads to poisoning through ingestion of contaminated insects.

Bats all over the planet, as Elisa Gozalbes stresses, “provide numerous environmental bene ts, as some of them act as pollinators and/or dispersers by spreading ower seeds, which facilitates plant reproduction and the natural conservation of ecosystems”. In addition to this, they are also important for their intrinsic value, as species that share the planet with us.

Spinach is rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that help protect the eyes from age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Chickpeas are also a good source of zinc, which supports eye health.

3. Boquerones en vinagre: These provide a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce in ammation and support healthy retinal function.

4. Gazpacho and Salmorejo: Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that may help protect the eyes from oxidative stress and reduce the risk of developing agerelated eye diseases.

Andalusian Gazpacho

Here is a recipe for a classic tapas dish that includes a variety of eye-

healthy foods and is easy to make at home. This dish is packed with vitamins and antioxidants that can bene t eye health, and of course, it’s delicious too!

This recipe combines tomatoes which are a great source of the antioxidant lycopene. Studies have shown that this helps protect against age-related macular degeneration and cucumber, which is rich in vitamin C and ca eic acid. This can help reduce in ammation and promote eye health. The peppers, garlic, olive oil, wholewheat bread, parsley and coriander all contain vitamins and minerals which are essential to good

vision, so why don’t you give it a try?

Ingredients:

• 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped (about 500g)

1 cucumber, peeled and chopped (about 250g)

2. Add the olive oil, red wine vinegar, sea salt, black pepper, cumin, smoked paprika, and water to the blender. Blend again until all ingredients are well combined.

3. Add the toasted bread to the blender and blend until the soup becomes thick and creamy.

Torrevieja hospital addresses suicide behaviour and prevention

The University Hospital of Torrevieja brings together a hundred professionals to address suicidal behaviour and the importance of its prevention.

The University Hospital of Torrevieja has held a day of clinical update on suicidal behaviour, a meeting that has concentrated the interests and e orts of professionals who, in one way or another, are dedicated in Spain to the study and prevention of suicidal behaviour.

The meeting brought together around one hundred professionals interested in the subject. Suicide prevention is a

shared responsibility of all health professionals. From doctors to nurses, psychologists and social workers, among others, each has a role to play in identifying and preventing suicide.

The meeting, endorsed by the Spanish Society of Suicidology and the Spanish Foundation for Suicide Prevention, featured speakers who are specialists in the eld, psychiatrists, psychologists and specialists in family and community medicine.

“Suicide prevention is more important than ever, and all healthcare professionals must be prepared to help identify people who are at risk,” says Jesús

Mesones, head of the mental health service of the Torrevieja health department.

“Health professionals must be trained to recognise the risk factors and warning signs of suicide. This includes changes in behaviour, the appearance of mood disorders, changes in sleep patterns and other symptoms. They should also be willing to discuss the issue with their patients and provide resources and support,” he adds.

Suicide is reported to be the second leading cause of death worldwide among young people aged 15-29, and one of the 20 leading causes of death overall.

The Department of Traffic delivers 60 bicycles to the “Bikes For Life”

The City Council of Torrevieja, through the Department of Tra c, Federico Alarcón, has delivered 60 bicycles that had been removed for renovation in the Children’s Tra c Park, to the Association

“Bikes for Life by Skoda”, which has the potential to generate a transformative impact on society. The delivery of these bicycles, carried out by the Councillor for Tra c, Federico

Alarcón, gives vulnerable groups the opportunity to access an economical and sustainable means of transport. Many people in disadvantaged situations do not have the resources to acquire their own vehicle or to cover the costs associated with public transport.

Alarcón stressed that it also has an important transformative social impact, allowing vulnerable groups to have access to mobility, opening up new opportunities for them. Bicycles can facilitate access to jobs, education and basic services, helping to break the cycle of poverty and promote equal opportunities for social inclusion.

Floyd Mayweather’s latest exhibition fight descends into chaos

Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition bout descended into a farce on Sunday night as his opponent John Gotti III sparked a mass brawl by continuing to throw punches after the referee had called it o .

Mayweather’s professional career ended in 2017 when he took his record to 50-0 with a TKO win over Conor McGregor, but the 46-year-old has since taken part in a series of highpro le exhibition bouts in the years since.

The most recent of which took place in Florida on Sunday night, but it turned into more of a WWE Royal Rumble than a boxing match when the arena descended into violence midway through the sixth round.

In the early stages of the ght, Mayweather had made light work of his opponent Gotti III - who is the grandson of infamous mob boss from the Gambino crime family.

He continuously mocked him and landed a urry of blows, with the 30-year-old giving little back, even being described by one journalist as ‘helpless’.

Between rounds, the referee had spoken to Gotti III’s corner in a bid to quell their trash talk, and then

eventually - midway through the sixth - the o cial then called a halt to the bout, handing Mayweather the victory.

Unfortunately for the man in the middle, that sparked an almighty ruckus, with Gotti III initially breaking past referee Kenny Bayless to continue swinging punches at Mayweather.

The boxing legend initially blocked and threw some sts back at his opponent, appearing to catch Gotti III on the top of the head with a left hook that forced him back across the ring.

At this point, members of both teams climbed into the ring and a mass brawl occurred.

Mayweather then went and sat atop the ropes to take in the scene as close to 50 people pushed and shoved their way around.

The ghting was not just restricted to the ring either, with a number of scraps breaking out around the arena.

Puerto Rican reality TV personality Joseline Hernandez, also known as ‘The Puerto Rican Princess’, was lmed putting another woman into a headlock.

She eventually released the pressure after keeping her in the headlock for a lengthy period, before continuing to argue with the other woman.

Torrevieja u3a

Saturday 10th June looked to be the long awaited start of Summer in Spain as temperatures hit the high 20’s and also proved to be a bit trying for some of the members of the Torrevieja u3a Walk and Talk Group.

34 members of the group, formerly known as the Strollers Group, met for their last wander of the season before the weather becomes too hot for walking, and set o from near the Punta Prima restaurant on the Punta Prima promenade wandering along the shoreline through to the start of Torrevieja just by the bars and restaurants

backing onto the old Dialprix at Mar Azul. They spent time relaxing and chatting over a co ee before setting o to return, but this time along the streets to check out some stunning properties set one row back from the promenade.

A great couple of hours with plenty of chat, banter and views along the way. Check out our website at www.Torreviejau3a.org where details of this, and all of the other groups available to Torrevieja u3a members can be found, along with information on how to join the association.
