Walk for Life returns

Maria and the Pink Ladies held it’s rst “Walk for Life” since the pandemic on Sunday at the Flamenca Beach Commercial Centre and hundreds joined in the fun and fundraising. The walk raises money for the AACC anti-cancer charity and there was a sea of pink as more than 230 local residents showed their support by completing the walk and may more came along to enjoy the

day.

Luckily the weather was ne and helped encourage a good turnout. The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums were on hand to pipe out the walkers and pipe them back in again on their return.

Simon Morton of Sunshine FM made sure there was a great atmosphere with some top tunes and this year the event was lmed by Chanel 5’s Bargain Loving

Brits in the Sun for an episode that will be aired next January.

The walkers completed a 5k circuit around Playa Flamenca, Orihuela Costa with a police escort. Men, women, children and pets all took to the streets. There were some wonderful costumes and friends, family and colleagues joined forces to raise as much money as possible

and the amount raised will be publicised once all the sponsorship money has been paid in. Since its inception, the charity has raised 542,506.61 all of which has been donated to ght cancer in the local community.

Maria Wilson, charity founder and President of the AACC, Orihuela Costa said: “I am overwhelmed once again by

the generosity of the people of Orihuela Costa; their kindness and generosity inspires me and all my volunteers to carry on raising funds to help in the ght against cancer. All monies raised will be donated to the AACC cancer charity and used locally to help people with cancer and their families.”

The AACC provides a range of support services including an early detection programme which screens for several types of cancer such as: breast, cervical, prostate, skin and bowel.

Alicante and Murcia experience record rainfall in May

In an unprecedented weather event, the Murcia region and Alicante province have witnessed a deluge of rain, shattering rainfall records for the month of May. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has con rmed that this May has been the wettest in Murcia since 1941, while Alicante province experienced its highest recorded rainfall for May since 1982.

Aemet predicts that the region will continue to experience a mix of sun, showers, and storms until mid-June, indicating that the unusual weather patterns are not yet subsiding. Juan Esteban Palenzuela, the director of Aemet in Murcia, revealed that the average May rainfall in the region reached 115 litres per square meter, surpassing the previous highest records of 98 litres in 1976 and 103 litres in 1959.

In Alicante province, rainfall levels varied across di erent municipalities. Alicante City observed the highest rainfall since 1980, with 95.4 litres per square meter. However, the El Comtat region in the north experienced the heaviest downpours, with l’Orxa recording an astounding 333.6 litres per square meter.

The southern city of Torrevieja

experienced an unusual phenomenon as it saw nine consecutive days of rainfall. This marks the rst time in the city’s history, since records began in 1927, that such prolonged rainfall has occurred in any month.

Professor Jorge Olcina from Alicante University’s climatology department explained that this exceptional rainy month was caused by the interaction of high pressure over northern France and the British Isles with low pressure and cold air in southern Europe, particularly the western Mediterranean basin. These atmospheric conditions generated instability and the formation of storms.

Despite the challenging weather, there is a silver lining for the regions of Alicante and Murcia. The recent rainfall has alleviated concerns about drought restrictions later in the summer, as the Segura basin reservoirs have witnessed a rise of 15 hectometres in the past week. Marrio Urrea, the president of the basin organization (CHS), stated that without this unusually wet period, the Murcia region would have entered a drought alert situation by July. However, farmers have been urged to use water prudently, as the area still grapples with a prolonged period of drought, despite the recent rains.

Eleven new officers for Orihuela Local Police

Eleven new o cers have joined the Local Police, after having passed the mandatory course at the Valencian Institute of Public Safety and Emergencies (IVASPE). The troops have already started active service. These new additions are added to the restructuring of the workforce as a result of the inauguration of 14 Local Police o cers, which took place recently. The policemen accessed the new jobs after also passing the IVASPE course that allowed them to be awarded the title of O cer.

In a bid to strengthen mental health support services and improve primary care centres, the Spanish Government has announced substantial nancial investments. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez revealed two funding packages which include 38.9 million euros dedicated to mental health services and 579.1 million euros intended for enhancing primary care infrastructure and acquiring new clinical equipment for healthcare centres.

The funding will be distributed among the di erent regions of Spain, as healthcare policy is primarily delegated to regional governments. Prime Minister Sánchez stressed the importance of addressing mental health and reducing the associated stigma. He highlighted a recent meeting at Moncloa, where he gathered associations and groups working in the eld of mental health and recognised the need to make mental health visible and openly discuss it without stigmatisation. Sánchez emphasised that experiencing depression or psychological di culties is common and can be overcome.

The 38.9 million euros allocated to mental health services will support various aspects, including nancing community mental health teams for both adults and young individuals. The funding will also

contribute to prevention and early detection e orts, including improvements to the 024 suicide helpline, launched last year.

Spain currently holds the highest rate of anti-anxiety medication consumption globally and is the largest consumer of psychiatric or psychotropic medication in the European Union. To address this issue, the funding aims to enhance service accessibility, strengthen existing mental health care, and establish new units in areas that lack them.

Andalucia, the most populous region, will receive 7 million euros from the mental health funding package, followed by Catalonia with 6.5 million euros, Madrid with 5.6 million euros, and the Valencian Community with 4.3 million euros.

This funding initiative builds upon the national Mental Health Plan implemented last year, which allocated 100 million euros annually for 2022, 2023, and 2024. Additionally, the government had already provided 24 million euros to autonomous communities last year.

Links to lockdown

The objective of these nancial commitments is to establish a comprehensive mental health care system across Spain. Mental health issues,

particularly among children and young people, have seen a rise in recent years. Experts attribute this trend to factors such as the lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic, which a ected crucial developmental years, as well as the high rates of social media and technology usage among children.

Distress calls from children under 18 in Spain have shown a signi cant increase in suicidal thoughts, with a thirty- vefold rise over the past decade. Selfharm, anxiety, depression, and eating disorders have also experienced a substantial increase, with a 291 percent rise.

In addition to mental health funding, 579.1 million euros will be allocated to autonomous communities to enhance primary care infrastructure and acquire necessary equipment. Spain’s Minister of Health, José Miñones, described this funding as the largest investment in primary care in history. He emphasized that the funds would come from the national budget, showcasing the government’s commitment to healthcare. With these funding initiatives, the government of Spain aims to provide better mental health support services, reduce stigma, and strengthen primary care centres, ultimately improving the overall well-being of its citizens.

The Department of Tourism has created a programme of guided tours for the month of June. The Councillor for Tourism, María García, highlighted a route that will take place on Wednesday, 21st June 21, at 7:00pm through the “Symbols of Orihuela” with a stop at the facade of the church of Santiago, where, every time the summer solstice occurs, a sunbeam illuminates an owl carved in stone.

On Saturday 10th June, at 10 am, there will be a route through the convents of the city and on Sunday 11th June “History and curiosities of Holy Week” is scheduled to take place. During the walk, participants will visit the Loreto chapel, the place of origin of this tradition, and the Holy Week Museum, where most of the steps that go out in procession remain.

“We will be able to learn about the artistic details and the curiosities of the brotherhoods”, said the councillor, who explained that “during Easter, this route is di cult to do because many of the steps are outside the museum”. In addition, she has considered that “it is important to value this festival, declared of International Tourist Interest, not only during Lent and Easter.”

On Saturday 17th June, there will be a guided tour of the Santo Domingo school and the

S.I. Cathedral from 10am and, at 6:30pm, another around the gure of Miguel Hernández, that will start in his House-Museum.

On Sunday, 18th June, at 10am, there will be a guided tour in Punta de la Glea and on Sunday, 25th June, at the same time, in the coves of Orihuela. “With the arrival of good weather,

we have transferred some of the activities to the coast, in order to learn more about its natural environment and its contribution to the landscape of the municipality,” said García. The tourist routes are free, although it is necessary to reserve a place at: www. orihuelaturistica.es

Potential breakthrough in detecting driver fatigue

Driver fatigue, responsible for a signi cant percentage of tra c accidents, has prompted a closer examination of its causes and potential solutions. Various countries are taking the issue of driver fatigue seriously and seeking e ective measures to combat it. In Australia, researchers at Monash University in Melbourne have made signi cant progress in developing a solution to easily determine a driver’s level of fatigue through a blood analysis. By analysing speci c biomarkers in the blood, authorities can identify if a driver surpasses the permissible fatigue threshold, making them liable to nes.

According to statistics released by the Directorate General of Tra c (DGT), between 20% and 30% of tra c accidents are attributed to driver fatigue, often resulting from inadequate breaks and extended periods of continuous driving without rest.

Fatigue severely impairs a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely, impacting their vision, hearing, body sensations, movements, and decision-making capabilities. Recognizing the symptoms of fatigue and taking prompt action is crucial to prevent accidents.

The study conducted

by Monash University demonstrates that the blood analysis can accurately determine whether a driver has been awake for 24 consecutive hours with a 99% success rate.

The researchers identi ed ve biomarkers that re ect the level of fatigue in the human body.

Australian authorities envision using this test in a manner similar to alcohol and drug screenings to detect drivers un t to continue driving due to fatigue.

Although still in the development phase, this innovative blood analysis could potentially be available within the next two years, initially for post-accident analysis purposes. The study’s tests were

conducted on a closed circuit, revealing a striking nding: drivers who had only slept for three hours were ten times more likely to be involved in accidents.

The potential implementation of this breakthrough blood test could revolutionize e orts to address driver fatigue and reduce the number of fatiguerelated accidents on the roads. By e ectively identifying tired drivers, authorities can take appropriate measures to ensure road safety and prevent potential tragedies. As research and development continue, the hope is that this technology will be utilized to its full potential, safeguarding drivers and passengers alike from the dangers of driver fatigue.

La Zenia cannabis club closed

Elche space rocket launch postponed

Elche-based company PLD Space’s much-anticipated launch of the rst Spanish space rocket, the Miura 1, has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

Orihuela Local Police o cers have seized 1.5 kilos of marijuana and 400 grams of hashish, as well as other cannabis-derived drugs after they raided a cannabis club in Orihuela Costa. In addition, 759 euros in cash were seized and two people were arrested for an alleged crime against Public Health, since they were supposedly in charge of the premises. In addition, a complaint has been led against the establishment for lacking a license.

The operation was carried out after o cers, who were carrying out surveillance work at the Vía Park I shopping centre, saw that the cannabis club was open, since people were going in and out. Upon entering the premises, they veri ed that there were several people grouped at di erent tables consuming marijuana and hashish cigarettes, for which reason the documentation of the association was requested from the person in charge of the

premises. There were also two other members of sta present, who worked behind the bar.

The Local Police proceeded to identify the eight people who were inside the premises and informed them that the Government Sub-delegation would be given their names for the alleged possession of illegal substances. The establishment was closed, sealed and the seized material was brought before the courts at the Civil Guard barracks in Torre de la Horadada.

The company was forced to abort last week’s take-o just moments before the countdown due to strong gusts of wind, which posed a potential threat to the mission’s safety.

During a live YouTube screening at 8:29am it was announced that the takeo would be aborted due to the “unfavourable weather conditions.” Wind gusts at altitudes between kilometres 8 and 12 were reported to be exceeding safe limits, prompting the decision to postpone the launch at Huelva.

Sara Poveda, an employee of PLD Space, revealed that the rescheduled launch would now take place in a few days’ time, according to the systems engineer of Miura 5, Roberto Palacios.

Earlier measurements taken by PLD Space using a wind measurement balloon indicated gusts of over 30 meters per second, surpassing the predetermined safety threshold. Nonetheless, the launch ramp and the rocket itself are reported to be in perfect condition, and

the team remains determined to proceed with the mission in the coming days, as stated by the team in an o cial announcement.

PLD Space had a speci c launch window authorized by the National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA), which was scheduled to close on 31st May. With the postponement, the company now needs to request new launch windows in order to successfully send the rst Spanish rocket into space.

Originally planned for 6:30am, the launch faced a setback due to abnormal behaviour in the main liquid oxygen reservoir of the launch platform. Raúl Torres, a representative from PLD Space, explained that the process was proceeding abnormally slow but was resolved before the weather

conditions forced the delay two hours later.

The Miura 1 launch represents a signi cant milestone for both PLD Space and the Spanish space industry. The rocket is designed to provide coste ective access to space for small satellites and payloads. Once launched, it will pave the way for further advancements and collaborations in the country’s space exploration e orts.

Despite the setback, the PLD Space team remains optimistic and committed to successfully launching the Miura 1 rocket in the near future. The rescheduled launch will be eagerly anticipated by space enthusiasts and industry professionals alike, as Spain takes its rst steps towards becoming a prominent player in the global space race.

Rojales town hall publishes 2,500 copies of the book of fiestas in honour of San Pedro Apostle and Moors and Christians

The councillor for Fiestas, Jesús Martinez Pascual, and the graphic designer and illustrator, Marta Ruiz Hernández, presented last Thursday the book and poster for the patron saint estas in honour of San Pedro Apóstol and the Moors and Christians which will take place from 10 June to 3 July.

The image of the patron saint of Rojales which illustrates the poster and the cover of the book accompanied by Moors and Christians symbols is the work of Marta Ruiz, who won the competition held for this purpose. “In my work the protagonist is San Pedro Apostle with an old, epic design, almost without colours but with small touches of colour to give more solemnity to our patron

saint,” says the designer. “I hope everyone likes it and feels proud of the poster”, she adds.

On the other hand, the councillor of Fiestas explained page by page the content of the book of estas of which a total of 2500 copies have been published and which are already available to all those interested in the di erent municipal o ces.

Over almost 100 pages, the publication contains information and photographs of the new queens of the estas, the new esta o cials representing the di erent Moors and Christians groups, the script of events, the speech given by the town’s town crier, Manuel Navarro on the 19th of May and a photographic album of the activities carried

out over the last year. There are also three literary contributions written by Augusto Viudes, Miguel Manuel Barberá and Carmelo González.

Jesús Martínez highlighted that this festive edition coincides with two very important and signi cant events for the municipality, the 250th anniversary of the declaration as Villa Real de Rojales and its subsequent segregation from Guardamar del Segura and the 45th anniversary of the arrival of the Moors and Christians festivities.

The councillor pointed out that during the festive agenda there will be about 50 events of all kinds and aimed at all audiences.

Are you a rst-time investor tempted to dip your toe into investing?

This may seem a daunting prospect, particularly in the current period of market volatility and economic uncertainty, but it doesn’t need to be.

Recent research reveals savers have been deterred from investing by their perceived lack of knowledge, and the belief they don’t have enough money to invest.

Below is a list of the top investing myths:

Myth 1 - I need to be an expert

Unless it’s your day job, you’re not going to be spending hours of your day researching nancial markets, nor should you.

Myth 2 - I need to have a lot of money

This is one of the biggest myths when it comes

to investing. It might have been true in the past, but you can start investing with less than you think. An investment with Pru International starts from as little as £20,000

Myth 3 - It’s time-consuming

After the pandemic boom, investing became exciting. But it’s not supposed to be. Once you’ve worked out your investment strategy, you don’t need to check it daily or frequently.

Myth 4 - I can get rich quick

Plenty of beginner investors fall into the trap of thinking that they can make lots of money very quickly by betting on risky investments.

It has not been helped by some of the mega gains some investors made during the pandemic, amid the tech stock boom.

Don’t be fooled, though. The recent rout shows just how volatile markets can be and how important it is to keep a cool head.

Probably the biggest thing to be wary of as a rst time investor is get rich quick strategies.

Getting rich slowly is very much the order of the day, and while taking risk is part and parcel of investing, just make sure it’s proportionate to your capacity to sustain losses.

Terra Natura welcomes its first tree ocelot

The Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park has welcomed the arrival, for the rst time, of a Margay (tree ocelot) to its facilities. It is one of only two species of feline in the world with the ability to rotate its ankle, as does the clouded panther. This curious characteristic allows this feline to descend from trees with its head downwards, as squirrels do.

This new female, named Lecia, comes from the Liberec Zoo in the Czech Republic. She is just over a year old and weighs about 2.5 kilos. This species is classi ed as near threatened, according to IUCN data, due to the fact that its populations are in clear decline. On the other hand, its trade is regulated by CITES.

For this reason, this species has an EAZA Ex Situ Programme, created to control and manage the population of this species in captivity and thus ensure its future. Terra Natura Benidorm is part of the EEP for this species. Within this project of conservation and management of animal populations, the nature park hopes to incorporate a male Margay soon with the aim of achieving the reproduction of this species together with Lecia.

On arrival at Terra Natura

Benidorm, the team of vets carried out a visual check-up to check its general condition and avoid causing stress to the animal. During the observation, it has been checked that it has a good coat, good colour, that it has no wounds and that its behaviour is normal. In the next few days, the animal will be kept under observation to see if it is eating properly.

The public will be able to visit Lecia in her installation in the area set in the American continent of Terra Natura Benidorm. Margays are small, spotted felines that resemble ocelots. This species stands out for its climbing skills and its fondness for trees.

They are active during the day

and night, and are usually solitary animals that form temporary pair bonds, which are formed during the breeding season. They feed on a wide range of prey, including terrestrial and arboreal mammals, birds and their eggs, amphibians, reptiles, as well as arthropods and sometimes even fruit.

Poaching pressure on this species has decreased considerably thanks to international protection, although poaching still occurs. The almost exclusive use of forest habitat may make the Margay more vulnerable than other cats, such as ocelots, due to the negative e ects of habitat destruction and fragmentation.

GBP

Having bucked the broader trend and surprisingly increased during the previous month, Nationwide House Prices declined by the fastest pace in 13 years last month, highlighting the negative impact to the market from the plethora of BoE interest rate hikes over the past year and a half. House Prices decreased by a whopping 3.4% during May, with the annual fall accelerating from 2.7% during April. The Nationwide also believe that higher interest rates will weigh heavily on the sector, which sounds like a sensible comment, given the backdrop.

In separate news, the BoE also con rmed that overall mortgage debt of £1.4Bn was repaid during April, representing the largest net repayment since record began in 1993, as consumers scramble to reduce their overall interest burden. The UK also bucked the trend on weakening Manufacturing PMI’s, with the latest data increasing from 46.9, to 47.1. Markets had been expecting a weaker report, in-line with recent weaker manufacturing data elsewhere. However, the data still remains well below the key 50 threshold.

The pound has also seen a fairly strong week, with GBP/EUR surging comfortably beyond 1.1650 for the rst time since the end of last year. Having declined from over 1.2600 to 1.2300, GBP/USD is also nishing this week on a strong footing, with the pair moving back over 1.2530, further highlighting the recent strength in the pound.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

EURO

Weaker economic data continues to dominate the European agenda, with evidence this week that in ation has fallen at a faster pace than had been expected. Regional Harmonised CPI declined from 5.6% to 5.3% on an annual basis during May, having been expected to have fallen only marginally to 5.5%. Headline in ation, which includes the volatile groups such as Food and energy, slipped from 7% to 6.1% over the same period. There were also substantial decreases among German and French in ation data. French annual CPI dropped to 6% during May on a preliminary basis, data highlighted on Wednesday, with Germany’s in ation slipping a whopping 1.3% from 7.6% to 6.3% over the same period, to its lowest level in more than a year.

Despite the declines, ECB Chief Christine Lagarde, suggested that there was ‘no clear evidence’ that in ation had peaked, pledging to increase European interest rates further at the next ECB meeting, and highlighting that it is still too early for the ECB to lower its guard. In other economic news, Germany continues to su er from weaker global manufacturing demand, which recently helped to push the country into a recession.

Having declined from over 1.1000, to under 1.0650, EUR/USD is currently attempting to nd support and had moved back over 1.0750 as of yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. Looking ahead, next week’s Regional Retail Sales are expected to recover on an annual basis somewhat, after the 3.8% decline during March, with Regional GDP expected to remain at (or near) 0.1% during Q1.

Installation of 30 underground containers begins in Torrevieja

The 30 units being installed (each with 4 underground containers) operate with mechanical horizontal platform lifting systems, known as “scissor” type, which are the most e ective and reliable on the market.

Torrevieja (05-06-2023). The Councillor for Urban Waste Management of the City Council of Torrevieja, Diana Box Alonso, reports that Acciona, the company awarded the waste collection service, transport to land ll, street cleaning and cleaning and maintenance of the coast, has already begun the implementation of new teams of underground containers to house the rest fraction.

Box Alonso indicates that the 30 units being installed (each with 4 underground containers) operate with

mechanical lifting systems on horizontal platforms, known as “scissor” type, which are the most e ective and reliable on the market. This equipment has been tested in the worst weather conditions, areas with high salinity, water, cold or heat, prevailing the good condition in this working environment; at the same time they are the most competitive from the point of view of manufacturing and maintenance costs.

The purpose of this underground equipment is:

1. The rubbish is out of sight. The accumulation of bags and waste in a container a ects the city in several ways. Aesthetics is one of the most damaged parts of the city. But not only that: it can cause bad smells and make tra c on the road more di cult.

With underground containers,

all these problems are avoided, as they are underground, making it di cult for odours and waste to reach the surface.

2. It does not a ect the environment. One of the most interesting bene ts of underground containers is that they are elements that hardly modify the urban space. They adapt perfectly to the area in which they are installed and, furthermore, they do not damage the street furniture or the pavement. Of course, they take up much less space than above-ground containers.

3. It reduces architectural barriers. In general, traditional bins are not adapted to people with reduced mobility. Underground bins, on the other hand, are perfect for removing obstacles when carrying out such a simple task.

A uniquely designed outdoor kitchen to resemble a spaceship completes the look. Using recycled and

everyday items to decorate it, this is a work of art in itself and a must see!

The gastronomic event “Torrevieja and the Sea” 2023 presented

Dolly, it’s so nice to have you back

Once again, the talented company that is Studio32 took over the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio last week to put on their much anticipated enactment of ‘Hello Dolly’ a turn of the century tale that centres around Dolly Levi, a New York City matchmaker, and as I write this review, three days after attending I am still in absolute awe.

talent in a role she could have been born to play.

The President of the Association of Hospitality Businesses of Torrevieja and Region, José Ignacio Pastor, accompanied by the Councillor for Hospitality and Tourism, Rosario Martinez, Vice President and Secretary of the Association, Jorge La Laguna and Joaquin Guillamó, and representatives of the four participating restaurants, has presented this morning the Gastronomic Days “Torrevieja and the Sea”, to be held from 13 to 16 June, with the participation of 4 partner restaurants, where you can enjoy their menus at lunchtime at a single price of 60 euros.

The participants in these days are the following:

Tuesday 13th June: Mesón Las Jarras

Wednesday 14th June: Restaurant La Galería de la Mirada

Thursday 15th June: Luz de Mar Restaurant

Friday 16th June: Las Columnas Restaurant

The president of the Association commented that the menus presented by the participating restaurants are of a great variety, always taking into account the raw materials that identify our days.

The menus are a perfect

combination of local, modern and designer cuisine, one of the characteristics of this gastronomic event, which leads to an attendance of the public as if it were a gastronomic route.

On the other hand, the Councillor for Hospitality and Tourism of the City Council of Torrevieja, has positively valued the kick-o of the summer with this important gastronomic event. She also stressed the quality of the menus and the importance of the 0 km product. Finally, he thanked the participants and the catering industry in general for the great work they have been doing.

I thoroughly loved the production. The music, the humour, the timing, the energy, the choreography, the colours, all made for a night of pure enjoyment. Such a pity that the opening night was played to a half empty theatre although I’m delighted to say that subsequent performances were much better supported, culminating on Saturday with a complete ‘sell out’. And so it should have been. This was Studio32’s best yet.

And what an accomplishment by Maxine McAleenon in the role of Dolly Levi. Given how many great actresses have played Dolly, she absolutely nailed the role. Her exquisite voice, her timing, and seasoned presence made her such a lovable character; such an exuberant

Surrounding Dolly was a cast of characters with a multitude of problems, particularly in the love department where they sought Dolly’s sage advice. She helps them win their heart’s desires and in turn, helps herself to the biggest catch of all, Horace Vandergelder, played superbly by Andy Kirkwood, the tightest millionaire in all of Yonkers.

All the main actors are solid and Richie Lucy is especially delightful, taking the opportunity to show o his many talents in the role of store clerk “Cornelius Hackl” where he was able to demonstrate his impressive comedic and dancing chops. In his Studio32 debut, Jude Houghton as “Barnaby Tucker” was equally worthy as his partner in crime.

I was delighted to see Lydia Kay propelled from her normal ‘bit part’ role to that of “Irene Molloy.” She has a beautiful voice that resonates with sadness and hope. Bodil Holberg was hysterical as “Minnie Fay” and had the audience in stitches with her antics, while Paige Leigh Charlton in the role of cry baby Ermengarde, the young

niece of Horace Vandergelder, had me chuckling every time she appeared on stage.

The supporting cast are very talented. I can’t imagine how much work went into producing the wonderful costumes and the scenery, and the show was a treat from beginning to end. The staging was simple and e ective, and it didn’t distract from the wonderful songs and choreography. Even though I’ve loved the score for decades, I felt like I was hearing some of the songs for the rst time.

Andy Kirkwood, who played the part of Horace said “this is the best set of principals and ensemble that I have ever worked with. It was all down to the three magicians, our Director Kevin Spicer, Musical Director Nicole Casey and Choreographer Lindsey Walker”.

For my part I feel that everybody involved in the production should be heartily congratulated. It really was a ‘stand out’ show, a classic with a big C. It was a night of colour, song and laughter, radiating joy from start to nish.

Preperations are now under way for their Winter show which will be ‘The Pajama Game’.

The Councillor for Education of the City of Torrevieja, Ricardo Recuero, the mayor of Culture, Antonio Quesada, the Artistic Director of the association and responsible for the project, Maria Ortigosa and nephews of the teacher Ricardo Lafuente, Francisco and Ricardo, presented this morning the Scholarships for Development of Musical Talent “Ricardo Lafuente Aguado” for children and young people.

A total of 60 scholarships for the 2023/2024 school year are available in this second call to cover the total amount of tuition, as well as a batch of books for the study of the subject of Musical Language. The books will be on loan as the Association aims to create the “Ricardo Lafuente Aguado” book bank to continue helping children and young people who want to learn music.

The deadlines to apply for

these grants will begin today, Thursday 1 June, until 15 September. The resolution will begin on 22 September until 28 September, with the awarding of the grants to be published on 2 October. The evaluation committee of the grants for the Development of Musical Talent will be made up of representatives of the 3MAP Musical Association, representatives of the family of Maestro Ricardo Lafuente, a representative of the School Council of the “Francisco Casanovas” Professional Conservatory of Music and a tax advisor.

As for the award criteria, María Ortigosa explained that they will take into account the applicant’s siblings studying at the Conservatory, whether it is a large and/or single-parent family, whether the student has a disability of more than 33%

and will also take into account economic criteria.

The grants for the Development of Musical Talent have the support of the Councils of Education and Culture, as well as the joint venture Agamed, Cultura Torrevieja, La Caixa Foundation and Toloal Ingenieria de Seguridad. The aim of the 3MAP Musical Association is to promote the work of Maestro Ricardo Lafuente Aguado.

In the year 2021 they carried out two concerts, one of them included in the 67th International Contest of Habaneras and Polyphony held in the month of July 2021. For this year 2023/2024 the Association continues to work on various projects, including the dissemination of the gure and work of Ricardo Lafuente in the educational centres of Torrevieja.

“I have seen copying and pasting text into a new Facebook post will remove ads and give users access to more content from friends. Is this true?“

The copy-and-paste posts, claim that posting the text on Facebook would “upgrade the system” and help “to regain friends in your news feed and get rid of ads.” However, this is a hoax.

When you copy and paste an item, you’re really creating a new post that can be seen by all your friends and beyond. In other words, it gets wider circulation.

So, you’re being used to help amplify a message. That may or may not be a good thing depending on its content.

But that’s not all. By copying and pasting, you’re e ectively enabling the original poster to track everyone else who is repeating it.

The original poster inserts some text with a couple of spelling mistakes in the message. Then they do a search using the misspelt phrase. This returns a list of everyone who has copied and pasted the message.

Now, let’s say the message is about animal abuse or another contentious subject. The original poster will now have a list of people who seem to support his/her cause and they can go about trying to contact them via Facebook with “friend” requests and other messages. Furthermore, the original poster

That’s not what happens with a shared message. If you delete something you shared, all the forward-shared versions of it disappear as well.

The same tracking tactic works for any message. You know, the type that says something like, “If you agree, comment ‘Amen’.” Again, by doing a search, the original poster will be able to identify all his/her supporters. The original poster’s intentions may have been perfectly honourable. Or maybe they’re not. And you may not nd out until it’s too late.

“I have deleted a le from Google Drive which was a copy of a le stored on my laptop. I have just noticed that the original le is now missing. Why?”

Important - Deleting a le or folder from Cloud Storage on one device is deleted from all your other devices. If you need the original le you can restore it from the Recycle Bin if you deleted it on a computer.

The sun shines for Campoverde open garden day

The annual Campoverde Open Garden Day de ed the recent unsettled weather to have a perfect day of bright sunshine between the bouts of extreme bad weather that plagued the rest of the Costa Blanca. There were ve gardens open to the public this year with each o ering di erent aspects of gardening to suit all tastes.

No matter whether you have a small terrace with a few pots or a large lawned paradise there was a something for everyone to enjoy. Over 200 people visited the various gardens and took the opportunity to quiz the gardeners whilst at the same time swopping tips and garden remedies.

The organiser James McAllister from Campoverde Church in the Community explained that the event which is now in its 6th year, is aimed at o ering gardeners from the Costa Blanca an opportunity to have a day out whilst visiting some of the interesting gardens in Campoverde.

James continued, “As a Church that is very much focussed on our community, we not only see Open Garden as a fun event for local people, but also as a means towards raising funds for our annual Kids Summer Club as visitors to the gardens very kindly make small voluntary

donations.”

The annual Kids Summer Club which takes place in August each year, even has its own little link to Open Garden as James always includes the kids in a small gardening project.

We say a HUGE thank you to all those who opened up their beautiful gardens and welcomed people from Campoverde and beyond into them; to all those who visited our gardens and brought delight to the gardeners and their helpers; to all those who made donations towards our Kids Summer Club. Most of all we o er a humble and heartfelt thanks to God who created all of nature and gave the world and everything in it for us humans to nurture and enjoy.

Antiques Roadshow guest stunned at whopping value of racing driver Lewis Hamilton’s old helmet and overalls gifted to him after he was own by helicopter to meet sports star

An Antiques Roadshow guest was stunned to learn the value of some of Lewis Hamilton’s old gear during Sunday’s episode of the show.

The man brought a helmet and overalls worn and signed by the racing driver, as well as a VIP pass for a corporate event.

He explained how in 2008 he’d spotted a competition to enter to meet sportsman Lewis, now 38, but the guest’s father entered for him as he was too young to meet the age requirements at the time.

His father won and the prize involved joining a group of other winners at television show Top Gear’s race track

Eamonn Holmes blasts Phillip Scho eld’s ‘lies, lies, lies’ as he calls for ‘anyone who’s kissed’ the axed ITV star to come forward

Eamonn Holmes has blasted Phillip Scho eld, insisting he doesn’t believe the former ITV star’s claims that he has made ‘one mistake’ in his forty year career.

In his bombshell interview last week Phillip said he believed his career was ‘over’ and he had ‘lost everything’ after admitting he had lied about his

relationship with a man on the show.

Speaking on his GB News programme on Monday morning Phil’s former This Morning colleague Eamonn called for ‘anyone watching today who has kissed Phillip Scho eld, let us know.’

‘He said in is forty odd years of broadcasting that he’s made one mistake, he had one kiss that he shouldn’t have had.’

‘I put it to anyone watching today that if you have kissed Phillip Scho eld let us know. Let us see if that gure of one grows to the gure that I believe it is probably at.’

Earlier while discussing Phillip’s interviews with his co-anchor Isabel Webster and showbiz reporter Ellie Phillips, Eamonn said ‘we’re not supposed to criticise him in case he

harms himself but he still thinks he can go on and say lies, lies, lies.’

‘He’s admitted he is a liar. You should see the emails, the texts and the messages I’ve been sent over the past week. I think he’s getting o very very lucky.’

‘Like everybody else he lied to me, I was happy to stand by him until I found out that he was lying... This isn’t about him being gay, not in the slightest.

Eamonn also criticised Jeremy Clarkson for defending Phillip over the weekend, insisting ‘Clarkson didn’t work there what does he know?’

In last week’s interviews, Scho eld, who was dropped by both ITV and his talent agency YMU after his admission to the Mail about the ‘unwise but not illegal relationship’, said he was ‘utterly broken and ashamed’.

Scho eld told the BBC that the young man, who worked as a runner for a short period on This Morning, was 20 when he rst had any kind of sexual contact with him.

He told The Sun they had become friends but in 2017 – three years before he came out as gay and separated from wife Stephanie Lowe after 27 years – ‘something happened that just changed it’.

Holidaymakers urged to protect themselves fully when in the Sun

Europe-wide travel insurance provider, Europesure Travel Insurance (www. europesuretravelinsurance.com), which provides comprehensive insurance protection for residents of the EU, EEA, Monaco, Gibraltar and UK, is urging travellers to stay safe in the sun, even if used to life in sunnier climes.

The warning comes after Europesure Travel Insurance commissioned a consumer research survey, which highlighted worrying sun-safety behaviours, despite also agging up many skin cancer concerns amongst Brits.

In Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month (May 2023), Europesure found 27% of Brits saying they worry about skin cancer. The worry is markedly more prevalent amongst women (36%) than men (17%).

Yet, despite this concern, more than one-in-twenty people (5.5%) declared they never wear any sun protection when on holiday, with this rising to 8% of the 18-24 age group.

A further 7% said they only ever wear a low SPF-factor sun cream or lotion, because they want to get a tan. In the 18-24s age group, this rose to 13% of those interviewed.

Adding to concern is the fact 11% of interviewees said they would not wear any sun

protection if there were clouds overhead.

Whilst the worry about skin cancer does not translate into good sun-safety practice in many cases, it is also clear Brits are not learning from past mistakes. 27% of interviewees said they had su ered painful sunburn whilst on a foreign holiday, which rose to a third of women.

Poor sun-safety is also attitudinal in part, with 9% of interviewees (as high as 17% in some cities) believing sunburn is just part of the holiday experience.

Europesure Travel Insurance’s sales and marketing director, Paul O’Sullivan, says, “Our survey highlighted worrying attitudes towards sun safety, particularly amongst men and younger generations. Although we surveyed British travellers, we are sure that the same behaviours are exhibited by travellers from other countries too, so want to extend the warning across Europe.

“As a travel insurance provider, we see holidaymakers hospitalised due to sunburn every year, with the pain being immense for some.

“However, more serious still is the fact that melanoma cases are rising so rapidly across the globe. Experts suggest they will have

risen 27% between 2020 and 2030, totalling 413,000 by 2030. Deaths from melanoma are also predicted to rise, by 31%, in this decade, with the total mortality gure projected to be 74,750 by 2030.

“It’s time for all European travellers to take much better care of themselves and their families, when out in the sun, and to appreciate that a tan can come at a huge health price.”

Sunburn is known to increase the risk of melanoma and the more times you su er sunburn, the greater the risk of su ering from melanoma.

It is also something that underpins a variety of horror stories on social media. Furthermore, some su erers have not just paid the price for avoiding sun lotion, but for also not having packed travel insurance. Their sunburn has caught them out and left them having to cover the costs of their hospital treatment themselves.

Europesure Travel Insurance urges holidaymakers to pack both the suntan cream and a good travel insurance policy, to ensure they have the best possible all-round protection when enjoying time in the sun. How to release negative thoughts: A comprehensive guide

At some point in our lives, we all experience negative thoughts. It can be challenging to deal with them, and they can take a toll on our mental and emotional well-being. Negative thoughts can be triggered by various situations, such as stress, anxiety, or depression. However, it is essential to remember that negative thoughts are just that – thoughts. They do not de ne who we are or what we can achieve.

In this guide, we will explore various techniques to help you release negative thoughts and live a happier, more ful lled life.

1. Identify and Challenge Negative Thoughts

The rst step in releasing negative thoughts is to identify them. Sometimes negative thoughts can be subtle, and we might not even realize we are having them. Pay attention to your inner dialogue and note down any negative thoughts you have.

Once you have identi ed negative thoughts, challenge them. Ask yourself if they are rational or based on facts. Often, negative thoughts are not based on reality, but rather on our perceptions and assumptions. Challenge your negative thoughts by asking yourself if

there is evidence to support them.

2. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware of your thoughts and emotions. It can be an e ective way to release negative thoughts and calm your mind. Mindfulness can help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions and allow you to let them go without judgment.

There are many ways to practice mindfulness, such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga. Find a mindfulness practice that works for you and make it a part of your daily routine.

3. Reframe Negative Thoughts

Reframing negative thoughts is a technique that involves changing the way you perceive a situation. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of a situation, try to nd the positive. For example, if you are feeling anxious about a presentation at work, instead of focusing on the negative aspects, such as the fear of failure, focus on the opportunity to showcase your skills and knowledge.

4. Express Gratitude

Expressing gratitude can be a powerful way to release negative

thoughts and cultivate a positive mindset. When we focus on the good things in our lives, it can help shift our perspective and reduce negative thinking.

Make it a habit to write down three things you are grateful for each day. They can be as simple as having a roof over your head, a warm cup of co ee, or the love of family and friends.

5. Practice Self-Care

Self-care is essential for maintaining good mental and emotional health. It involves taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and engaging in physical activity. Take time for yourself to do things you enjoy, such as reading a book, taking a bath, or going for a walk.

6. Seek Support

If negative thoughts are a ecting your daily life, it is essential to seek support. This can be from a friend, family member, or mental health professional.

Talking to someone about your feelings can be cathartic and help you

release negative thoughts. It can also provide you with a new perspective and help you develop new coping strategies.

In conclusion, negative thoughts are a natural part of the human experience, but they do not have to control our lives. By identifying and challenging negative thoughts, practicing mindfulness, reframing negative thoughts, expressing gratitude, practicing selfcare, and seeking support, you can

release negative thoughts and live a happier, more ful lled life.

Remember, releasing negative thoughts is a process that takes time and e ort. Be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress along the way.

Hybrid automotive cars and insurance: What you need to know

Hybrid and electric cars have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their fuel e ciency and environmentally friendly features. However, when it comes to insuring these vehicles, drivers may face higher premiums compared to traditional gasoline-powered cars. Insurance companies take into account the higher cost of hybrid and electric cars when determining insurance rates, as well as the potentially higher cost of repairs.

According to The Zebra, a leading insurance comparison site, hybrid and electric cars usually cost more to insure than gas-powered cars. This is because insurance is designed to cover the value of the car, and vehicles with high list prices, including many hybrid cars or EVs, bring higher insurance premiums. Additionally, the repair costs for hybrid cars are often higher, which can also impact insurance rates. It is important for drivers to research and compare insurance rates for their speci c make and model of hybrid or electric car to ensure they are getting the best coverage at the most a ordable price.

While hybrid and electric cars may have higher insurance rates, there are ways for drivers to potentially lower their premiums. For example, some insurance companies o er discounts

for drivers who own hybrid or electric cars, as these vehicles are often seen as safer and more responsible choices. Additionally, maintaining a good driving record and taking steps to improve vehicle security, such as installing an alarm system or parking in a secure garage, can also help lower insurance rates.

Hybrid Cars

What are Hybrid Cars?

Hybrid cars are vehicles that use both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to power the vehicle. These cars combine the bene ts of both gasoline and electric vehicles to provide improved fuel e ciency and reduced emissions.

How do Hybrid Cars Work?

Hybrid cars work by using a combination of gasoline and electric power. The electric motor is powered by batteries that are charged by the engine or by regenerative braking. The gasoline engine is used to power the car at higher speeds or when extra power is needed. The electric motor is used to power the car at lower speeds or when driving in tra c.

Bene ts of Hybrid Cars

Hybrid cars o er several bene ts

over traditional gasoline vehicles. These bene ts include:

Improved fuel e ciency: Hybrid cars can get signi cantly better gas mileage than traditional gasoline vehicles, which can save drivers money on fuel costs. Reduced emissions: Hybrid cars produce fewer emissions than traditional gasoline vehicles, which can

help reduce air pollution and improve air quality.

Tax incentives: Some governments o er tax incentives for purchasing hybrid cars, which can help o set the higher initial cost of these vehicles.

Regenerative braking: Hybrid cars use regenerative braking to charge their batteries, which can help extend the life of the brakes and reduce maintenance

costs.

Overall, hybrid cars are a great option for drivers who are looking for improved fuel e ciency and reduced emissions. While they may have a higher initial cost than traditional gasoline vehicles, the long-term savings on fuel costs and potential tax incentives can make them a smart investment.

Best sail for ages!

One competitors (John Down) experience of the SAMM racing on May 31st.

First race anti clockwise, wind SSW at 4.5 knots. First mark 90 degrees to left of start gate so everyone trying to get to port side of gate. Ginetta on my starboard side and Tres coming in on my port between me and the port start buoy. We crossed together very tight!

Tres took my wind and set o for the rst buoy but I caught him, overtook him on his windward side and he couldn’t round the buoy until I had. It’s called tactics.

The wind shifted to SSE and built to an average of 9 knots, perfect for my Radial and I was up on the plane several times between buoy 3 and the gate. No mistakes and at out all the way. I saw a couple of port/starboard near misses between the two Sail sh boats.

The race o cer had set 10 mins between the rst and second races, perfect.

Second race clockwise due to the wind shift during race 1. I sat back hove to about 2 meters from start line

which put me in good position to cross the line rst, and o to buoy one, with the other 6 boats hard on my heels as they had all started within 37 seconds of the gun.

Wind stronger at up to 11 knots at times and waves really got up. Being slapped hard and drenched by waves.

I led to rst buoy and decided to sail on a little before turning towards buoy 2. I didn’t go far enough and I was dropping below buoy. Others boats behind saw it and sailed on further in attempt to get a clear run to the buoy.

I had to tack up to buoy so lost ground.

On the 2nd lap at 1st buoy, Tres coming in on Starboard with me having just gone onto a port, phew 6 inches from full speed contact. Got caught out at gibe mark buoy 3 trying to switch my “sailing by the lee” over to the other side and whilst sorting it out missed gate. Had to turn back to go through the gate which cost me time.

At buoy 1 most people sailed on so to make up ground. I turned sharp up towards buoy 2 which looked like a good move until in the tack near buoy 2 I got stuck in irons costing me yet

more time! Continued to chase Tres and Dos, slowly catching up by lap 5, when Tres capsized in front of me and I had to take avoiding action. Started to close gap on Dos. Did not hear about to nish signal but support boat told me. My hull was full of water when the bung took out, need to investigate why. Best sail for ages
