Successful summer for Spain

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) has unveiled its latest statistics showing a tourism boom in Spain, with August 2023 seeing an unprecedented 10.1 million international tourists gracing the country’s shores. This marks a remarkable surge of 13.9 percent compared to the same period in 2022.

In terms of spending, August showcased a substantial improvement, culminating in a total expenditure of

€13,529 million, signifying an impressive growth of 19.9 percent in contrast to the previous year. The INE report further highlighted that over the initial eight months of 2023, Spain welcomed a total of 57.7 million visitors, re ecting a signi cant uptick of 19.6 percent from the preceding year.

During this period, tourists collectively spent €73,393 million, demonstrating an increase of 24.3 percent compared

to the same period in the previous year and a substantial growth of 14.9 percent compared to 2019.

INE’s data emphasised the noteworthy in ux of tourists from markets with high purchasing power, particularly the United States and Switzerland. These nationals are in pursuit of distinctive experiences in a ercely competitive and innovative landscape, where Spain holds a prominent position as a global leader.

In August, the average expenditure per tourist in Spain reached €1343, marking a year-on-year increase of 5.3 percent.

UK Remains Spain’s Top Source of Tourists

The United Kingdom maintained its status as the primary source of tourists for Spain during this period, accounting for a formidable two million tourists, or 20.1 percent of the total, and registering an impressive 10 percent surge compared to August of the preceding year.

Following the UK, France and Germany emerged as prominent contributors to Spain’s tourist in ux. France furnished 1.9 million tourists, re ecting a

substantial annual rise of 17.9 percent, while Germany sent 1.2 million tourists, marking an increase of 5.8 percent from the previous year.

Among other countries of origin, there was a notable year-on-year surge in tourist arrivals from the United States, soaring to an impressive 29.5 percent compared to the previous August. Switzerland also experienced a surge of 24.1 percent, while Ireland’s numbers

grew by 22.4 percent. Additional statistics disclosed that Spain has played host to 2.5 million American and 1.3 million Swiss tourists this year.

Top Spanish Destinations in 2023

Catalonia claimed the top spot among Spanish communities designated as prime tourist destinations in the initial months of 2023, hosting a staggering 12.3 million tourists. The Balearic Islands closely followed with 10.5 million visitors, while the Canary Islands welcomed more than 8.9 million.

In August alone, the Balearic Islands accounted for 23.3 percent of the total arrivals. Catalonia closely trailed with 21.1 percent of tourist arrivals in August, with Andalucia coming in third at 14.3 percent.

Furthermore, INE highlighted that Andalusia, as the third most popular destination community in August, welcomed over 1.4 million tourists, signifying an annual growth of 11.2 percent. The UK was the leading country of origin for Andalusian tourists, constituting 20.8 percent of the total, followed by France with 14 percent.

This record-breaking surge in tourism is poised to have signi cant economic implications for Spain, solidifying its position as a global travel hotspot. With a diverse range of attractions and a vibrant cultural scene, the country continues to be a magnet for international visitors seeking unique experiences.

Residency fraud arrests

Authorities in Alicante province have apprehended a total of 14 individuals suspected of orchestrating an elaborate scheme involving forged documents to secure residency in Spain and claim bene ts. Shockingly, among those taken into custody are two civil servants implicated in the operation.

The investigation was set into motion after law enforcement noticed an unusual surge in registrations on the municipal register, commonly known as the padron, all emanating from a handful of addresses. This discovery prompted the National Police to launch an investigation.

Upon further scrutiny, it was uncovered that the suspects had utilised a series of fabricated documents at local councils in the municipalities of Pinoso and

La Algueña to falsely assert their residency at these locations.

Once successfully enrolled in the municipality, they then proceeded to apply for health cards, allowing them access to public medical services.

Additionally, the forged documents were instrumental in obtaining residency permits, a move aimed at facilitating the entry of family members from abroad onto Spanish soil.

According to reports a public employee in Pinoso was allegedly responsible for handling the fraudulent applications, while a counterpart in La Algueña purportedly fabricated documents to aid the suspects in obtaining residency permits. Both of these civil servants were arrested during the operation.

While the other 12 individuals

involved face accusations of employing these false documents, the masterminds have thus far managed to evade capture after eeing to Morocco in July.

The investigation is ongoing, with approximately two dozen individuals still under scrutiny due to their alleged involvement in the case. Authorities remain committed to unravelling the full extent of this fraudulent operation and bringing all perpetrators to justice.

This operation underscores the diligent e orts of law enforcement in Alicante province to combat fraudulent activities and safeguard the integrity of residency processes in Spain. The apprehension of the two civil servants highlights the commitment to holding individuals in positions of trust accountable for their actions.

Flu jabs available at 60

In a sweeping e ort to safeguard public health this Autumn and Winter, the Ministry of Health is set to kick o the most extensive vaccination campaign against both u and COVID-19 to date. The initiative will encompass approximately 900,000 individuals in the province of Alicante, marking a signi cant expansion of the ‘at-risk groups.’

A groundbreaking change in policy is the reduction of the age for double immunisation to 60 years, a departure from the previous threshold of 65 years. Moreover, healthy children aged between 6 months and 5 years, totalling around 80,000 minors in the province, will now receive protection against

the u. This decision stems from the notable impact of u on this age group, which, after the elderly, experiences the highest rate of hospital admissions due to the virus. Previously, u shots were reserved for children with underlying risk factors in this age range. Notably, for those aged between 2 and 4 years, the vaccine will be administered intranasally, a method involving inhalation through the nose.

While the communities of Galicia and Murcia implemented this approach last year, the upcoming winter will mark the rst nationwide inclusion of healthy children without ‘at-risk’ conditions in the vaccination campaign.

In a strategic move, public health

experts have introduced a new risk group for dual immunisation against both u and COVID-19: smokers. This designation encompasses an additional 316,000 individuals in a province ranking fth in smoking prevalence behind Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville.

Health authorities have secured a substantial 1.3 million vaccine doses for the entire community, with the aim of reaching the maximum number of eligible individuals who wish to receive the vaccine.

Starting from 16th October, individuals belonging to the recommended risk groups for both COVID-19 and u vaccination can

schedule appointments through the GVA +Salut APP and the Ministry of Health website as the campaign gets underway.

This ambitious vaccination campaign signals a proactive approach to protect the population of Alicante province against the dual threat of u and COVID-19. By including healthy children and introducing immunisation for smokers, authorities are taking decisive steps to bolster public health in the face of these viruses.

Elderly woman receives €450,000 after botched op at Torrevieja Hospital

An elderly woman has been awarded a substantial €450,000 settlement after a shoulder operation at Torrevieja Hospital went wrong, ultimately leading to the amputation of her left arm. This compensation was granted following an “out of court” resolution reached in the wake of the awed procedure, which took place in January 2021.

The patient, who was 65 years old at the time, sought medical attention in January, 2021, after sustaining a shoulder fracture.

Five days later, she underwent an operation in an attempt to rectify the issue. However, during the procedure, an artery began to hemorrhage. Despite this critical development, the surgical team deemed the bleed to be consistent with a vein and opted to address the source of the bleeding.

Tragically, post-operation, the woman experienced arterial ischemia, which subsequently progressed into a perilous thrombosis. Shockingly, it was revealed that treatment for this life-threatening condition was not administered until 48 hours later, ultimately culminating in the inevitable amputation of her left limb, as reported by the Patients Advocate group.

Subsequently, the patient pursued a claim for damages against the Valencian Health Department. The investigation saw the involvement of two comprehensive reports, one from the Health Services inspectorate

Breast Cancer event smaller but successful

Unfortunately, the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month event advertised in the Costa Blanca People last week had to be ‘cancelled’ by the management team at Zenia Boulevard. This was due to the on-going redevelopment work being carried out in the main forecourt and stage area.

However, despite the lack of entertainment Maria and the Pink Ladies still attended, knowing local people could still turn up and deciding that although smaller than usual the most important thing was to mark the occasion for all those a ected by breast cancer. During the afternoon a €500 donation by the Boulevard and more than €1000 was raised and will be donated to the AACC to help in the ght against cancer.

All monies raised will be donated to the AACC anti-cancer charity, which works speci cally within the local communities to support those diagnosed with cancer and their families.

Globally, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held in October every year, aims to promote screening and prevention of the disease, which a ects one in eight women in the United States every year and 2.3 million women worldwide. Residents demand railing repairs on Costa promenade

The Cabo Roig and Lomas Residents Association has voiced its utter disgust and dissatisfaction regarding the deterioration of the railings along Playa Flamenca promenades, one of the main beaches in the area. The railing, subjected to years of corrosive elements from storms and high humidity, now requires immediate and urgent attention.

Temporary fencing has been hastily installed by Orihuela council in areas where sections of the railing are completely missing, aiming to prevent potential accidents serious injury should anyone stumble over the exposed edges

While the problem has been escalating over the past two years, successive

council administrations have made little e ort to rectify the situation. The Partido PopularVox coalition currently in power has asserted that they are actively seeking funding to address the damage wrought by high oxidation.

Former infrastructure councillor, Angel Noguera, explained that budgetary constraints coupled with soaring energy costs were the primary hindrances to the necessary repairs. Prior to these cutbacks, he said that trial works were conducted on the railings between Calle Violeta and Cala Estaca. This involved meticulously sanding down the railing, removing any rust, and applying a fresh coat of paint.

Noguera emphasised that, if not for the nancial limitations, the undertaking

would have extended to cover the entire railing along Playa Flamenca and Cala Mosca. The makeshift measures applied so far have proved insu cient, with the iron pillars supporting the stainless-steel bars now so corroded that they need replacing with more resilient materials capable of withstanding the harsh elements.

Residents are increasingly vocal about their concerns, urging prompt action from the council to safeguard the safety and aesthetics of this cherished coastal promenade. As the debate continues, the fate of Playa Flamenca’s railing remains uncertain, leaving residents and visitors alike anxiously awaiting a de nitive solution to this long-standing issue.

Carer arrested for €50,000 jewellery theft from elderly Elche woman

A caregiver has been apprehended for pilfering more than €50,000 worth of jewellery from an elderly woman in Elche who had entrusted her with care. The victim, a 94-year-old, saw her cherished belongings vanish, prompting her vigilant daughter to report the matter to the Policia Nacional.

The daughter expressed her suspicions that the carer was involved in the disappearance of the items, which were surreptitiously taken over a period of time from a jewellery box.

Following thorough investigations, authorities

con rmed that the 52-yearold Portuguese caregiver had discreetly pawned o items valued at €25,452 during nine separate visits to three pawn shops over a span of three months.

The carer’s son also played a role in facilitating the sale of the stolen goods, even as the police probe was underway. Among the items that vanished was a luxury watch with an appraised value exceeding €20,000.

Both the mother and her 21-year-old son were apprehended, yet regrettably, a signi cant portion of the stolen jewellery could not be

retrieved, having been already melted down by unscrupulous retailers.

The lost items held immeasurable sentimental value for the elderly victim, and the proceeds received for their recycling were a mere fraction of their original worth.

This disheartening incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of some elderly individuals, even in the care of those they should be able to trust. The investigation and subsequent arrests highlight the commitment of law enforcement to bring justice to victims of such callous acts.

Improvements planned for postal services

In a signi cant move to streamline mail delivery services, individual properties in Entrenaranjos have recently started to receive their letters directly in private mailboxes at their homes, bypassing the communal boxes. Now, it appears that parts of the Orihuela Costa region may also adopt this more personal and e cient approach.

The National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has greenlit the proposal, stipulating that more than 2,000 residences and commercial establishments

in the area, with a registered population exceeding 1,800, will soon enjoy door-to-door mail service. This shift aims to alleviate the inconvenience of retrieving mail from shared multi-home mailboxes.

In response to the CNMC’s directive, the Orihuela Council has received a noti cation outlining the initiation and processing of procedures to implement this improved delivery method. The designated areas set to bene t from this potential upgrade include Dehesa de Campoamor, Cabo Roig, La Zenia, La Zenia II,

La Regia, and Mil Palmeras. Pending o cial con rmation, this development, if approved by the CNMC following their investigation, would no longer classify these locales as special environments. Instead, it would establish that ordinary postal items must be directly delivered to the home or mailbox of single-family residences.

This prospective transition represents a substantial step towards modernising mail delivery services in Orihuela Costa, promising residents a more convenient and e cient postal experience.

New mobile radar for San Fulgencio

San Fulgencio Local Police have acquired a ‘Velolaser’ mobile radar to improve road safety. O cers have been trained in using the device which will be used to control the maximum speed of vehicles driving through and around the town.

The Mayor and Councillor for Safety, José María Ballester, said that this initiative “will allow us to carry out a more exhaustive surveillance of tra c and reduce the risk of accidents”.

As pointed out by the chief inspector of the Local Police,

Cristóbal Rodríguez, the main advantage of this ‘Veloláser’ equipment is that it is “a very versatile device, as it can be installed on a motorbike, in the patrol car, or on a tripod at street level, which makes them fully mobile for use by o cers for

speed control in di erent parts of the town, both in the town centre and in the urbanisation area of La Marina”.

The use of these devices is a response to the requests of some residents “who have observed infractions at speci c points where vehicles exceeded the maximum speed limit,” said Rodríguez. Local police o cers have received the necessary training over the last few days to start using them very soon, which “will make San Fulgencio a safer town in terms of road safety”, said José María Ballester.

The prospect of expanding the European Union is taking centre stage at consecutive summits in Granada, Spain, where leaders from across the continent are convening this week. This renewed focus on enlargement comes in the wake of Russia’s con ict with Ukraine, rekindling discussions around integration. However, before welcoming new members, the bloc faces the formidable challenge of overhauling its budget, institutions, and decisionmaking processes.

The European Political Community, a novel platform established in response to Russia’s aggression last year, is now serving as a forum for comprehensive discussions on Europe’s future, including the incorporation of new EU members. The 47 heads of state and government attending the summit will tackle critical issues such as migration, security, environmental concerns, energy policies, and the role of arti cial intelligence.

Pressure from ve Western Balkan countries, which have long awaited EU accession, alongside Ukraine and Moldova, has urged Brussels to accelerate the membership process in light of Russia’s actions. However, for the EU to grow beyond its current 27 members to potentially over

30, signi cant reforms are imperative.

A recent report, jointly sponsored by France and Germany, underscores the necessity of adopting quali ed majority voting for decisions on foreign and security policies, thereby guarding against individual vetoes. The report also advocates for a nuanced approach with four tiers of political alignment, ranging from full EU membership to a broader coalition within the European Political Community.

In anticipation of the Granada summit, European Council President Charles Michel reasserted his stance that the EU should be prepared for enlargement by 2030. Michel will preside over an informal meeting of EU leaders where he will elaborate on his proposal.

Explaining his position, Michel has made it clear he believes the issue can’t be

‘put o any longer’. However, Michel’s 2030 target faces opposition from the European Commission, responsible for evaluating the progress of each candidate country in meeting the necessary criteria and implementing essential economic and judicial reforms for EU membership. The Commission contends that setting a xed date is counterproductive, as it assumes all potential members are at the same stage and will therefore progress simultaneously.

A Commission spokesperson said: “We don’t understand the need for this date; this risks undermining the con dence of many stakeholders in a fair, transparent, and meritbased accession process. The (EU) treaties give the European institutions a clear role as a neutral and objective intermediate in a clear and de ned process.”

BBC upgrade advice from Go Satellite

Are you living in Spain, have a satellite TV system to receive UK TV channels and recently the following message has started to appear on your screen whilst viewing the BBC channels:

“BBC TV and Radio services on satellite will soon only be available on HD-Capable receivers. You need to upgrade. If you have a Freesat receiver, visit www.hdsatelliteupgrade.co.uk for more information or call 0330 123 1876.

Sky TV customer should visit www. sky.com/help/bbcupgrade”

The BBC is switching o its SD (Standard-de nition) channels on satellite, in Q1 2024 and is replacing them with HD (High-de nition) versions of those channels.

How do I upgrade to BBC HD?

There are two main factors that will determine how to proceed with upgrading your Satellite TV system to receive the new BBC TV and Radio channels in HD:

Satellite Dish Size – In the southern Costa Blanca area (Gran Alacant, Santa Pola, Catral, Dolores, Almoradí, Rojales, Benijofar, Quesada, Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, etc…) we have been able to enjoy viewing our favourite UK channels via a 1.4m dish. Unfortunately, the frequencies that the BBC HD channels have

been launched on are too weak to be received (all year round) on a 1.35/1.4m dish. Even the strongest frequencies o ering the HD versions (10818 V and 11024 H) are too weak to guarantee optimal signal strength all year round.

If however, you have a larger 1.8 / 1.9m dish, in this area, you will be able to receive a vast majority of the di erent regional BBC HD channels all year round, as long as your receiver is HD-Capable

HD-Capable Receiver – Do you have a n o cial satellite receiver (Sky, Humax, Freesat, etc…) or a non o cial satellite receiver (GI, Amiko, Ferguson, GT Media, etc…). If you have either type of these receivers and it is less than 10 years old, then its most likely it is a HD compatible receiver.

If you have an o cial Sky receiver and not sure if it is SD or HD then the easiest way to check is to go to channel number 105. If you see “Channel 5 HD”, then you’re good to go and there’s nothing else you need to do. However, if you see “Channel 5” without HD at the end then you’ll be impacted and need to upgrade.

If you have an o cial Freesat device, the quickest way to check on this type of device as to whether you’re going to be impacted or not, is by going to channel 799 on your satellite box.

You’ll see one of the following messages:

GBP / EUR UPDATE

GBP

Incoming UK economic data has broadly surpassed estimates of late. Growth exceeded expectations, with quarterly GDP rising by 0.6% during Q2 on an annual basis. Furthermore, the latest ISM services and manufacturing PMI surveys also re ected worthy improvements, with services rising from 47.2 to a more respectable 49.3 throughout September, moving closer to the key 50 threshold.

UK retail in ation also declined to a yearly low last month, fuelled by a steep decline in food price growth, with shop prices rising by 6.2% last month.

The data released by the British Retail Consortium re ected the lowest increase since September last year. The annual gure declined to 9.9%, slipping into single digits for the rst time since August 2022.

The news will be a welcome boost to those struggling against the huge increases to their cost of living as we approach winter, with rising energy bills set to make a further dent into household budgets.

Despite the recent declines, UK food price in ation remains higher than both the US and EU, with the long-term impacts of Brexit a clear drag on the UK economy.

In other news, con rmation nally came from the UK government this week that they have shelved plans for the HS2 railway extension from Birmingham to Manchester amid a urry of ‘radical’ decisions at the Tory party conference. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak thinks that the move could save the government around £36bn, putting those savings into smaller, more local projects.

As of Friday morning, GBP/USD is still on course to post another negative week, with the pair currently trading around 0.2% lower overall, having reached a new cycle low of 1.2037 earlier in the week. However, the pair is witnessing a modest rebound, rallying to back over 1.22. GBP/USD has been su ering from both the surging dollar and changing dynamics on UK interest rates, given the BoE’s surprising decision to pause rate hikes last month after a welcome drop in in ation. That powerful combination has resulted

in a total decline of over 7% after reaching a cycle high of over 1.3100 earlier in the summer.

GBP/EUR has remained in a holding pattern within a tight range between 1.15 and 1.1580 for the past fortnight, indicating that the pound and single currency remain fairly well-synched, at least for now.

EUR

At the time of writing, EUR/USD looks set to achieve a fairly unprecedented twelfth straight week of declines, with the pair slipping around 0.3% by Friday morning. Earlier in the week, EUR/ USD also dipped to 1.0450 for the rst occasion since December last year. The decline from the July high of 1.1275 has now surpassed the 7% mark. Of course, today’s US Nonfarm Payrolls still have the potential to ip everything around by the weekly close, but regardless, consistent declines such as these are fairly rare events without some form of correction.

Most of the movement is considered to be down to dollar strength instead of Euro weakness. However, markets remain sceptical of the ECB’s ability to raise interest rates beyond the current level of 4.25% after last month’s 0.25% hike, given the broad economic slowdown throughout the region.

This week has witnessed a more mixed outcome among key economic data, with an improved set of Services and Manufacturing PMI surveys released throughout the region, albeit from a particularly low base. Only German manufacturing was the standout underperformer, slipping to 39.6 over the past month. However, regional data still points toward a more cautious consumer, with Retail Sales declining by a further 2.1% on a monthly basis during August. Looking ahead, the minutes of the previous ECB meeting will be released next week, with a further update on German in ation. However, given the importance and strength of the recent USD move, this could point to EUR/USD continuing to take the bulk of its directional bias from the dollar side of the pair.

Local Police in Albatera recover 600 kilos of pomegranates stolen from the rural area of the municipality

The Albatera Local Police report that, thanks to one of their joint control devices with the Dolores Civil Guard patrol, they have managed to recover 600 kilos of pomegranates stolen from an agricultural eld.

The events occurred last morning, when the agents stopped a vehicle, which ed through various streets in the municipality of Albatera, being nally intercepted by the patrols. Said vehicle was fully loaded

with pomegranates, which, as it was discovered after the appropriate investigations, had been stolen from an orchard in the rural area of the municipality.

In total they carried about 600 kilos of this fruit.

The detainees were charged with theft, the vehicle was placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authority and the recovered pomegranate was delivered to its legitimate owner.

The head of the Local Police of

Albatera, Pedro Serna, explained that “thanks to this increase in surveillance by the Rural Patrol before the season, in this case, of the pomegranate, it has been possible to recover this large amount of fruit and return it to its owner, who, after hard work, deserves to be rewarded. With these actions we value the fruits of our land and, of course, our farmers, who thanks to them we can enjoy this delicacy such as the pomegranate.”

Presentation of the “Local Commerce Month” program

The Councillor for Commerce, Hospitality and Tourism of the City of Torrevieja, Rosario Martinez; Jorge Almarcha, president of APYMECO; Elvira Geurts, representative of the Association for the Improvement of Commercial Crafts (AMATA); Amadú Sow, head of DANRA events, and Arturo Cerdá, representative of the company YAMUVE, have presented the extensive program of activities to be carried out within the “Month of Local Commerce”, organized by the City of Torrevieja and will run from 10 to 31 October in di erent parts of the town.

Seafood market in the Paseo Vista Alegre, craft market in La Mata, food street market in the Park of Nations, commercial revitalization, sports activities, ra es, gifts, etc.. are some of the activities aimed at boosting local trade in di erent parts of Torrevieja.

In addition to all the activities, in the Month of Local Commerce, a draw will be held to encourage the purchase in local commerce of 10 vouchers for 100 euros, for the purchase of more than 25 euros, in more than 100 stores participating in this campaign. The resolution of the 10 winners will be on November 3, through the o cial Facebook page of Commerce. In the same trade will provide the card in which you have to ll in your details and go to the o ce

of Commerce to enter it in the urn and thus already enters the draw, which will be held on November 3 and the winners will fail. Also, on

Saturday, November 4, to close the Month of Local Commerce will be held the Gala of Local Commerce in the Casino of Torrevieja.

My daughter announced she was getting married for a fourth time. This will be her thirteenth relationship. Against my wishes, her mother insisted we pay for her lavish ‘weddings’ each time she got married. I lost my wife two years ago. Now, my entitled daughter is expecting me to cough up for wedding number four. She’s 48 for goodness’ sake! I should not be handing over money for the umpteenth time. I should add that her mother was always bailing her out. I would tell my wife that she is enabling her, and not teaching her how to stand on her own two feet; but my opinion did not count. Now, I am a pensioner and retired, I am on a fixed income. In Spain I would have to fund a large part of my own care in my older age; if god forbid, I needed to go into a care home or bring in carers - my health is not good. My daughter calls me cheap, and says it’s not what mum would have wanted; now she isn’t

talking to me.

Your daughter is not thinking about your needs for your old age whatsoever, is she? Stick to your guns. Your longer email tells me that over the years she would constantly ask you for cash for ‘petrol money’, ‘rent money’, or to lend her some cash until pay day; never paying it back. She drove fancy cars, which were always being repossessed, and for which she could not afford the insurance; she even got banned from driving and spent a night in cells for driving whilst being disqualified, for the second time. Her siblings no longer talk to her and have accused her of ‘bleeding her parents dry over the years’, and when you did give her money, you have not seen her for months and months until you cough up again. This is emotional blackmail, and elder abuse.

Almost 200 people took part in guided tours and workshops at the Natural History Museum on European researchers’ evening

Nearly 200 people have made visits and neuroscience workshops organized by the Cultural Association Ars Creatio in the Museum of Natural History on the occasion of the European Night of Researchers, and has enjoyed the collaboration of the Department of Culture of the City of Torrevieja.

Multiple families, students in 4th grade primary CEIP Habaneras and adult workshop “La Bella Lola” were those who enjoyed the various activities held on Friday 22 and September 29, and Sundays September 24 and October 1.

First, attendees took a guided

tour of the museum by biologist and science popularizer Estefania Alonso, an hour long, which was made known to the biodiversity of Torrevieja and environmental education necessary to preserve it.

Next, the participants attended a neuroscience workshop given by the scientist María Luisa Molina, in which they discovered the more human side of research and the great advances being made in the study of the brain and the discovery of therapies for nervous system pathologies such as Rett syndrome. The success was such that although this workshop had an estimated

duration of about 30 minutes, the interest and questions of the attendees lengthened the workshops even up to almost 90 minutes, especially on Sundays, when there was no limited time to return to schools.

Torrevieja has joined with these activities organized by Ars Creatio to the nearly 400 European cities celebrating the European Night of Researchers. It has been an activity funded by the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, coordinated by Maria Luisa Molina and with the collaboration of the Institute of Neurosciences of Alicante and the Department of Culture of the City of Torrevieja.

New hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best kicked o the launch show on ITV, after the reality show was axed in 2018 by Channel 5, introducing a new batch of 16

contestants in front of a studio audience.

Sir David Jason, 83, still makes mammoth amount in royalties each year after his successful decades-long acting career

The star, who is perhaps best known for playing Del Boy in sitcom Only Fools and Horses, has been banking more than £1million a year.

Phillip Scho eld is ‘absolutely horri ed’ by the alleged plot to kidnap and murder Holly Willoughby as he reaches out to his former cohost to lend his support

ITV’s This Morning in May.

But Phillip Scho eld has reportedly lent his support to former co-presenter Holly Willoughby following news of an alleged plot to kidnap and murder her.

Festival, Seville

The annual shing Pilgrimage to Arcos De La Frontera took place between the 2nd and 6th of October. We once again stayed in bungalows a the Meson De La Molinera hotel situated right on the lake. Eighteen anglers took part in what turned out to be glorious sunny conditions with temperatures in the low thirties. The overall winner would be decided on weight with all four days shing to count.

Day 1

The opening day is usually pretty quite with the lake getting used to the bombardment of bait etc. We shed in three sections of six along the whole match length. Winner on the opening day was yours truly, Ian Brown. Drawn on peg 16, I shed the method feeder with double corn at 50 and 30

metres and weighed 33.48kg of carp

In second place was last years winner Bradley Cannon. Brad drawn on peg 12 shed the method feeder also with corn or the slow sinker with pellet and weighed 32.46kg.

In third place was Barry Smith, Barry is a stalwart of maggot shing and he used them to good e ect this time on the cage or slow sinking feeder and weighed 22.56kg

Day 2

The weather was pretty much the same for the second day and better shing was anticipated. This was in fact the case with the ever consistent Bradley Cannon taking the spoils. He once again used mainly the slow sinking feeder on peg 3 and weighed a much improved 51.08kg.

In second place was one of our Dutch raiders Danny Kerkhof. Drawn on the end peg 18, he used the slow sinker with pellets and weighed 35.68kg.

I took third place with 34.98kg from peg 10 catching most of my sh on the method feeder once again with double corn.

The Wednesday was a rest day in the festival and we had a lovely barbecue prepared and cooke by Justin from Hepburn’s restaurant in Villamartin.

Day 3

The day panned out to what had become the usual format with Bradley Cannon once again putting in a great performance and weighed 43.06kg. This put him in an almost uncatchable position in the overall standings.

Danny Kekhof also continued his charge and took second place on the day with 41.34kg, again on the slow sinker with pellet.

Bill Cannon, Bradleys father also got in on the act and weighed 39.26kg to take 3rd place on the day again using the slow sinking feeder.

Day 4

The nal day shed overall much more di cult. Our other dutch raider , Win ran out the eventual winner as he too perfected the slow sinking feeder to narrowly take the spoils with 32.62kg.

Win was very closely followed by Barry Smith who shed a great match with cage feeder and maggots to weigh 32.58kg.

Bradley Cannon after a slow start caught

on both method feeder and slow sinker to weigh 29.08kg.

These nal day results meant that Bradly retained his title, followed by Barry Smith and I was third.

Once again we would like to thank Dougie Hornblow and watches of wales who sponsored most of the prizes. Unfortunately dougie was called home before he had even started the competition with a family member in hospital.

I would also like to thank Danny and Win for the great prizes that they provided once again for the ra e.
