Thirteen dead in Murcia nightclub fire

At least thirteen people have died during a re in two nightclubs - Teatre and Fonda - in Atalayas, Murcia with the blaze spreading to neighbouring premises. 112 began receiving calls around 6am reporting the re and re ghters rushed to the scene at dawn to put out the ames. Once the re was extinguished, they began searching for the victims and at time of going to print it is suspected that there could be more deaths.

It is believed some of those who

lost their lives were celebrating a 30th birthday in the VIP area, which was located above the main club and dance oor. Those on the lower level were able to escape the blaze, but those in the booths upstairs were trapped.

In addition to the deceased, four people were injured, all due to smoke inhalation, two women aged 22 and 25 and two men aged 41 and 45. Medical and transport ambulances were dispatched and two of those a ected were taken to hospital.

Fire ghters and experts from the Rescue Consortium battled to extinguish the ames and a total of 12 re vehicles and 40 personnel continued working after putting out the re to secure the area.

There are specialised units from the Murcia Police Headquarters investigating the res at the scene in order to determine the origin and determine a timeline of events. Members

of the murder squad have also joined the investigation. According to reports in the regional daily newspaper Informacion an investigation is being carried out to see if the re could have started due to a short circuit in one of the lights in the nightclub. It also quotes sources claiming that the ames spread quickly and that the roof collapsed an hour after the re ghters arrived on scene. According to these sources the victims

were on the upper oor and were taken by surprise by the ames and could not get out due to the layout of the club.

Murcia City Council has set up an area in the Palacio de los Deportes for families and those a ected by the deaths, where they will receive psychological support and access to the specialised emergency services working the investigation. The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, travelled to the area and already declared three days of o cial mourning for the victims. The General Director of Security and Emergencies, Ricardo Villalba, was on site coordinating with the Murcia City Council and providing the necessary means to manage the tragedy. The Vice President and Minister of the Interior, Emergencies and Territorial Planning, Jose Ángel Antelo, also travelled to the scene.

Debate continues over local Health Centre

In a decision impacting over 30,000 residents of Orihuela Costa, plans for the expansion of the Medical Centre have been scrapped. The project, originally conceived under the previous PSOE administration, has taken a backseat in the PP-Vox coalition’s agenda.

Irene Celdrán, the Health Councillor, clari ed that the current council’s focus lies in the construction of an entirely new health centre, set to be located away from the existing facility which is nestled between Cabo Roig and Campoamor at Aguamarina.

During a recent plenary session, Councillor Celdrán addressed a

motion proposed by the PSOE, to transfer a plot of land adjacent to the current Medical Centre. The wasteland is currently used a car park by locals and those visiting the health centre. However, the Councillor voiced strong reservations about the proposed expansion, citing concerns over its suitability and potential parking issues in the vicinity come next summer. While acknowledging the inadequacy of the current facility, she emphasised unanimous agreement on the need for a bolstered coastal healthcare system.

Cambiemos echoed the call for a

second centre, contending that the Department of Health’s criteria did not align with Orihuela Costa’s actual needs. Councillor Leticia Pertegal argued that a signi cant portion of the resident population is still unregistered, not to mention the substantial seasonal in ux.

The PSOE councillor, previously in charge of health warned that if the planning for the extension is not pushed through then another legislature will pass without any improvements to healthcare in Orihuela Costa and there will be no extension, nor a second health centre.

Feijoo loses investiture vote

In a signi cant blow to Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s aspirations, the Spanish Congress of Deputies delivered a de nitive rejection on Friday (29th September) with 172 votes in favour from the parties of PP, Vox, UPN, and CC, while 177 votes against came from PSOE, Sumar, Junts, ERC, Bildu, PNV, BNG, and one null vote cast by Eduard Pujol.

The concluding day of Feijóo’s bid for investiture was foreshadowed by a preceding agreement between Junts and ERC in the Catalan Parliament. This pact hinged on a commitment from Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to facilitate conditions for a referendum, prompting an unconventional response from PSOE and PSC. While the referendum was not explicitly

mentioned, the ambiguous language signalled their resistance to proposals leading to “rupture and discord.”

During the plenary session, Republicans replaced their spokesperson, choosing the more assertive Teresa Jordá over Gabriel Ru án. Jordá, a former minister of the Generalitat, emphasised the need for negotiations once amnesty was secured, stressing the importance of setting the stage for Catalonia’s voting process. Junts’ spokesperson, Míriam Nogueras, highlighted that voting is a path to consensus, dispelling concerns that a referendum might fracture coexistence.

Feijóo seized the moment to remind the assembly of Sánchez’s previous stance against amnesty or a referendum. He challenged the Prime

Minister to reiterate this position clearly and decisively, urging him to address the potential consequences for Spain if he were to lead the government.

Sánchez, notably, did not address Feijóo’s challenges personally, instead delegating his response to Óscar Puente, a prominent socialist deputy. Puente criticised Feijóo for what he deemed a futile debate and accused him of eroding the institution of the Crown.

Following the vote, President of the Congress Francina Armengol conveyed the outcome to the King at the Zarzuela Palace. During the plenary session, the ERC spokeswoman criticized the King for allegedly taking sides in the process.

It is anticipated that next week, Felipe VI will initiate a new round of consultations

with political groups, excluding Republicans, Bildu, Junts, and BNG, who declined to attend similar meetings in August.

Sánchez’s investiture now hinges on securing additional support in the coming months. If unsuccessful by 27th November, the constitution mandates that a second general election be called, potentially setting the stage for a vote on 14th January. The political landscape remains uncertain as Spain awaits the next chapter in its governmental journey.

Man stabbed flatmate and lived with corpse

In a shocking and gruesome confession, a 52-year-old man living in Alicante has confessed to the brutal murder of his female atmate, and then, unbelievably, he continued to stay in the property with her lifeless body for more than a month.

The murder was committed on 29th August and was allegedly driven by a series of tensions and disputes stemming from their living arrangement.

Local authorities swiftly responded to a distress call and on arrival at the address the man confessed to the

crime nearly a month after it took place.

Upon reaching the crime scene, o cers were confronted with the grim sight of a 66-year-old woman’s lifeless body. Tragically, the victim was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition, her remains shrouded in plastic bags and concealed beneath a duvet.

The alleged perpetrator repeatedly told police that there was no romantic involvement between him and the victim, despite their cohabitation. That the arrangement was platonic, and

they were atmates only.

A thorough search of the home, situated on San Vicente Street in Alicante, revealed a profoundly unsanitary environment, with waste and refuse strewn throughout the property. Additionally, investigators came across several items of interest, including a knife believed to have been the murder weapon.

The Violent Crime Unit of the Provincial Police Judicial Brigade is currently spearheading the investigation into this deeply disturbing case.

Fourteen-year-old arrested after school stabbings

In a tragedy that has shocked the comminuty, a 14-yearold student at a high school in Jérez de la Frontera, a town in southern Spain, was apprehended after wielding a knife, resulting in injuries to three teachers and two fellow students.

The distressing incident happened at 8:25am last Thursday, prompting a swift response from the National Police after receiving an urgent call reporting an armed individual targeting people within the school premises.

According to a classmate who witnessed the ordeal, the assailant entered the classroom visibly agitated, taking out knives from his backpack before launching the attacks. The weapons in question were identi ed as two kitchen knives. The victims sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity, with one teacher facing a critical surgery due to an eye injury. Another student, who su ered minor wounds, has been discharged from the hospital.

Accounts from witnesses claim that the attacker approached one of his classmates from behind, brandishing both knives while uttering threats. A panicked response from the rest of the

class led to a biology teacher present at the time attempting to intervene, pleading with the assailant to stop and put down the knives. Unfortunately, she then fell victim to an attack, resulting in the eye injury.

Subsequently, the attacker left the classroom, proceeding to another room. Reports suggest that a teacher and several students managed to subdue him. Additional information from the EFE news agency, given by a student at the school, reveals that the attacker was not known to exhibit problematic behaviour but often kept to himself, leading some to speculate about possible mental health issues.

Ancient shoe unearthed in Spanish cave

Scientists have identi ed Europe’s oldest known footwear - a pair of sandals intricately woven from grass, estimated to be approximately 6,000 years old. These ancient artifacts, along with a cache of other objects, were unearthed in a bat cave in Spain that had been plundered by miners during the 19th Century. The remarkable preservation of these items can be attributed to the cave’s low humidity levels and consistent cool winds.

Classmates of the attacker have since come forward, suggesting he may su er from Asperger’s syndrome and that he may have been subjected to bullying. Incidents of laughter and water being thrown at him in the schoolyard have been cited as potential factors contributing to his distress.

In the aftermath of the incident, all students were safely evacuated from the school premises, while police authorities began their investigation into the incident. This harrowing event serves as a grim reminder of the importance of fostering a safe and supportive environment within educational institutions.

The ndings have emerged from a recent comprehensive analysis of the items, shedding new light on prehistoric communities and their technological prowess. María Herrero Otal, co-author of the study, said that these objects constitute the “oldest and bestpreserved set of plant bre materials in southern Europe so far known.” She further explained that the diverse array of technologies and materials used underscores the exceptional skill of these ancient societies.

Cutting-edge dating techniques were instrumental in pushing back the estimated age of the collection by nearly 2,000 years, revealing that some of the objects in the

nd date back an astounding 9,000 years. Among the items, the meticulously crafted grass sandals take centre stage, showcasing a blend of various grasses intertwined with elements of leather and lime. These exquisite artifacts hail from the Neolithic era, predating the 5,500-year-old leather shoes discovered in an Armenian cave in 2008.

The discovery site, known as the Cueva de los Murciélagos or the Cave of the Bats, is nestled in Andalusia. The cave’s history is as fascinating as its contents, having rst been explored in 1831 by a landowner seeking bat guano, a valuable fertilizer component. Not long after, miners delving into the cave stumbled upon a hidden chamber containing a trove

of astonishing artifacts. These included partially mummi ed remains, baskets, wooden tools, wild boar teeth, and a one-of-a-kind golden diadem. The unearthing of these ancient shoes and accompanying objects o ers a unique window into the lives and ingenuity of prehistoric societies that once inhabited this region. The revelation prompts a re-evaluation of our understanding of their technological capabilities and provides invaluable insights into their resourcefulness in utilizing natural materials. This extraordinary nd stands as a testament to the enduring human quest for innovation and adaptation in the face of diverse environmental challenges.

Torrevieja renovates six multi-sportcourts

The ‘blue’ A+D sports courts in Torrevieja have undergone a complete transformation thanks to the comprehensive renovation and improvement works that have been carried out in recent months and have involved a municipal investment of 761,000 euros. These actions, in charge of Abala Infraestructuras, have as main objective to improve safety and provide the best possible conditions for sports practice in these emblematic facilities.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillor for Sports, Diana Box, the director of Sports Facilities, José Antonio Carmona, and the Planning Technician of Sports Activities of the City Council, Daniel Plaza, have visited this morning the two sports courts of the urbanization Torreta III to check in situ the state in which they have been these renovated urban infrastructure.

One of the highlights of this renovation is the replacement of all lighting with energy-e cient LED lights. This improvement will not only contribute to signi cant energy savings, but will also provide more uniform and brighter lighting on the courts, thus improving visibility and safety during sports practice.

The works have also included

the renovation of all perimeter walls and fencing, as well as the repair and repainting of the oors. In addition, the existing sports equipment, such as basketball goals, goals and nets, has been replaced to ensure their optimal functioning. New features of the new courts include the goal nets, which are made of galvanized steel to make them last longer, as well as the lighting of all the courts, which will be controlled by the Sports Department itself to turn them on and o . GBP

It has been a particularly di cult month for the pound, with sterling su ering its most extensive declines since this time last year, after the ill-fated Truss/Kwarteng ‘mini budget’ had in icted heavy losses for the pound and broader UK asset prices. GBP/USD has seen particularly extended declines as a result of the strong dollar, at one point slipping roughly 4% during September from over 1.2700, to a six-month low of just above 1.2100.

Only a sudden reversal in risk sentiment helped to send the pound back over 1.2200 on Thursday afternoon (against USD). Elsewhere, GBP/JPY has also moved notably lower over the period, despite the BoJ maintaining their ultralow interest rate policy throughout this period, which has weighed heavily on the yen. GBP/EUR has perhaps been the one outlier, rising back over 1.1550 toward the end of the week.

Aside from that strong dollar, the broader declines for the pound have been fuelled by the BoE’s decision to maintain its key interest rate at 5.25% last week after such a long period of rate hikes, and with market-implied expectations for further BoE hikes subsequently diminishing and clearly feeding into the weaker sterling narrative.

Incoming data has been fairly limited throughout this week; however, the UK housing market continues to wobble under the impact of those cumulative BoE rate hikes, with Zoopla suggesting London sellers are having to accept discounts of greater than 5% in a bid to secure sales. That represents the highest average discount since early 2019. The Halifax will be releasing their latest update on the UK house market next week. There was some better news on the growth front, with the latest GDP update

Structural repairs at Torrevieja school underway

slightly beating analyst estimates and increasing by a respectable 0.6% during Q2 on an annual basis, having been expected to have increased by 0.4% over the period.

GBP PMI surveys are due for release next week.

EUR

There was some good news from Germany this week, with con rmation that in ation has now dropped to its lowest level for two-years. The German harmonized index of CPI fell from 6.4% in August to a healthier 4.3% during September, coming in under the 4.5% market expectation. Whilst Spanish in ation may have increased for the second month in a row, it remains at 3.2% overall. Regional in ation was released this morning (Friday) and con rmed in ation has dropped from 5.3% to 4.5% - its lowest level in 2 years. In other news, the latest German IFO survey also beat expectations across the board, with the overall Business Climate, Current Assessment and (future) Expectations all surpassing estimates.

It’s possible that the positive news on in ation will increase the prospects that the ECB will pause Euro area rate hikes at their next meeting, despite the recent rises in energy prices potentially impacting headline in ation.

EUR/USD has now fallen by around 4% throughout the past two months, with the pair reaching a low of 1.0500, a level last tested back in March. However, the sudden increase in risk appetite yesterday (Thursday) afternoon may have helped to put a short-term line in the sand for the single currency. The latest regional Retail Sales data is the main highlight among incoming economic data next week.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by Councillor for Education, Ricardo recuero, and the director of the school, Julio C. Jimenez, has visited the structural repair works of IES No. 1 Libertas, which have an investment of 274,649.73 euros (VAT included).

The works, which began in mid-September, will be completed after the Christmas holidays, so that in this way the school community enters the center in January 2024 operating normally.

These structural repair works of the IES Libertas are intended to solve the problems

that existed in this classroom as the lack of ventilation and rainwater collection, which caused the destruction of its pillars structure. In addition, the execution works include the enlargement of this school module. The rapid solution of these problems is also related to a better educational o er to meet the existing schooling needs.

Also, the actions that are being executed also means the tranquility of the members of the educational community to be in a safe center, without having to be alert (more than in other centers) to the slightest

seismic tremor.

Finally, it should be recalled that the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of the Generalitat delegated to the City Council of Torrevieja this action of structural repair and expansion of aulario in execution of the provisions of Decree Law 5/2017, of October 20 of the Consell, which establishes the legal regime of cooperation between the Generalitat and the local administrations of the Valencian Community for the construction, expansion, adaptation, reform and equipment of public centers of the Generalitat.

I lost my sister just over a year ago. Her husband, my brotherin-law was, and is devastated. Their three girls also - they are in their teens and 20s. Before I left their house after flying back for the funeral; I said to him that my sister told me that she did not intend him to be alone for the rest of his life; he indicated that she had said as much to him. At the time he said he could not replace her, ever. Now, the girls have contacted me and had a go at me, saying that their Dad has met someone in the bereavement group he was attending; and that it was all my fault because I had encouraged it. I am completely at a loss as to how this has become my fault. Although I did not suggest he join a bereavement group, I did say that I thought it a good idea; the man was beside himself with loneliness. WRITE

It does seem that to alleviate some of the blame, your brotherin-law may have told the girls of your conversation after the Service, and they have directed their anger at you rather than blame their Dad. If your brother in law has found a little happiness in his life, it would make the older relatives feel better for him, but not apparently, his children. They may see it as being too soon; or indeed not want to entertain the idea at all. It’s very difficult when they see it as replacing their mum. But, no one knows what it’s like to lose a partner; until they too are in the same situation. Explain that you only told their Dad something their mum had wished for him. Then, you must leave it with them. Hopefully, in time, they will see their Dad is a little happier for it.

Rojales Local Police increase rural presence during harvesting

The agreement to increase police presence during periods of crop harvesting was agreed at a meeting held at the town hall.

To protect the crops and goods of the farmers of the orchard and the countryside of our Municipality. This is the objective of the working meeting held in the plenary hall of the Town Hall of Rojales, chaired by the mayor, Antonio Perez.

Members of the State Security Forces, councilors, responsible for the Local Police of Rojales and representatives of the Water Court and the association Huergur were also present.

Among others, it was decided to further increase collaboration between the various actors involved in agricultural areas, to reduce theft of fruit and vegetable products, machinery, tools and reduce assaults on rural homes. “We have set wills, which revolve around coordination between all parties involved and the establishment of schedules for

the collection of the di erent crops, to increase vigilance as a preventive measure” indicates the councilman of Security, Antonio Lopez.

As the councilman himself indicates in his words, surveillance will be reinforced on key dates with respect to the collection of the di erent cultivated products as happens in other areas of the province in harvesting periods (pomegranate or grapes from Vinalopó).

In the case of the agricultural areas of Rojales, the pumpkin or sweet potato, immediately, and citrus or artichokes next. Other crops such as broccoli and other horticultural products will follow at the beginning of the year.

Another aspect that was emphasized at the meeting was that “immediately”, farmers should notify the Local Police as soon as they detect any strange movement of people or vehicles in rural areas. In this way, the identi cation work can

be done more e ciently.

Special emphasis was placed on the ling of reports in the event of theft. For it the Local Police will make a direct support to the a ected ones to improve the channels of communication to realize this step since “everything what is not denounced does not exist”, at level of legal procedure, as it was exposed in the meeting.

In this regard Antonio Lopez says that with these initiatives promoted from the Department of Public Safety with the collaboration of the Local Police and other security forces “we want to put at the service of our citizens everything necessary to increase their safety and tranquility in our countryside and orchards. And thanked the direct involvement to solve the problem related to the theft of fruit and vegetable products of the Chief Inspector of the Police of the Generalitat based in Elche, Fernando Gomez.

Palliative care conference at Torrevieja Hospital

The Torrevieja Health Department will hold a conference on palliative care on 5th October to promote awareness of palliative care among healthcare personnel and the general public. Under the slogan, “Compassionate communities: together for palliative care”, will provide an overview of the situation and development of palliative care in the health department of Torrevieja.

In addition, a space will

be created to publicize the palliative care program and the actions that health professionals perform in the care of patients with this need from the di erent levels of care, among others.

The conference is aimed at the general population of legal age, as well as at any interested professional, regardless of their professional category.

Palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life of patients with serious advanced disease. It considers the patient

and family/caregivers as a unit of care. They understand that a patient’s su ering is not exclusively physical and accept the reality of su ering as an essential part of the human experience.

Those caregivers, citizens, patients and professionals who wish to participate in this day, can do so by registering for free at the following link: bit.ly/3LdmN9b This same information is also available on the department’s social networks.

Brian and Paul – their Ataxia story!

The 27th September is World Ataxia Awareness Day although, as it is so rare, most people will never have heard of it. Ataxia – in the UK (population 67 million) only 10,000 people are a ected and 15-20,000 people in the USA (population 330 million). There are similar patterns in the rest of the world.

Walking, talking, eating, dressing, even pulling your pants up, and carrying a cuppa are all things most people do without thinking. For someone with this very rare condition it’s a totally di erent matter.

Ataxia is the ‘umbrella’ term for a rare degenerative life limiting neurological condition a ecting amongst other things mobility, co-ordination, balance and speech. People with Ataxia are often wrongly perceived to be drunk due to their awkward gait and slurred speech. Comments like “you want to take more water with it mate” or “have you had one too many then” are commonplace.

The cause of Ataxia is still largely unknown, there is no e ective treatment or cure in sight. From rst diagnosis only one thing is certain - it gets worse!

The Association of Movers and Shakers look to support people a ected including local men Brian 63 (on the left), rst diagnosed in his early 20`s and Paul 65 (on the right), rst signs appearing when he was 10 years old. There are di erent variants of Ataxia, but both have familial genetic Ataxia inheriting it from someone in their family line, although quite who remains a mystery. Both say they

cannot really remember a time without Ataxia which, over the years, has taken lots from them including mobility, speech and balance impacting on their independence.

They agree that the frustration of the daily struggle to cope and realization that you cannot do what you used to, or want to, or be easily understood, a ects you mentally.

Walking is dramatically a ectedhaving progressed from managing with an awkward gait, holding hands for support and using sticks. Brian now permanently needs a walker, whilst Paul needs a mobility scooter outside. Falls are an everyday occurrence for them as are scrapes, cuts and bruises. They are great at crawling, being able to give babies a run for their money!

Brian describes himself as ‘di erently abled’ rather than ‘disabled’ explaining ‘I can still do things even if in a far di erent way to ‘normal’ people. You just have to nd a way to adapt and get on with things as best you can.

There are positives and ‘funny’ moments though; a Blue Badge means parking is free almost anywhere, free seats on planes, and queue jumping: cheap tickets at a lot of places, priority seating, tax savings and discounts.

Paul remembers the time when he fell in a hotel bathroom, grabbed the mirror pulling it o the wall where it broke into pieces. Luckily the Receptionist understood it was an accident. Another time whilst working, Paul stumbled, lost his balance sailed across the shop oor ending up head rst in an old 25 litre oil drum that was being used as a rubbish bin.

Brian was once banned from entering a restaurant before getting to their door and seeing him walk towards them they assumed he was drunk. Also, when ten pin bowling, falling and ending up following the ball down the alley, and as it was so slippery not being able to get back up.

In all seriousness you sometimes have to laugh or cry, The reality is, it gets harder every day but being positive, they both agree it could be worse. Ataxia teaches you to appreciate everyone and everything you have - think glass half full rather than half empty.

Movers and Shakers is a local charity in the Costa Blanca region o ering support to family and su erers of Ataxia, Huntington’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease. Members meet every Friday at O’Brien’s Bar, El Raso, Guadarmar del Segura. The President can be contacted by telephone +34 711 008 250.

Note:

We are seeking a volunteer with a caring disposition to work with our Liaison O cer. The role involves accompanying the Liaison O cer on all home visits to new families and registered Members of the Association. This is a new volunteer role which will develop over time in consultation with the Liaison O cer and the President. For further information please contact the President, Marion Smith, on +34 711 008 250.

Needle less threads taking over the non invasive face lift game!

New no needle PDO threadlift is the latest technology for a non-invasive alternative to threadlift/facelift/botox that is now available at Indianas Hair and Lash boutique. It uses a clinically proven TON technology to painlessly lift the face with no down time and no needles.

Many people are willing to endure pain in the name of beauty, however, there are some who do not have a high tolerance. So the latest needleless PDO threadlift is the perfect solution for those who want a lift without the pain and down time of the traditional threadlift treatment. It features a TON (transfer double nanosphere) technology to penetrate the active ingredients down the lipid through intercellular pathway without benig a ected by external factors such as temperature / ph levels ensuring stable penetration.

It promotes relaxation of the facial muscles and helps reduce wrinkles in the orbital and perioral zones, improves tissue tone and elasticity.

In seven days after the rst

treatment wrinkles are reduced by over 20%.

As we age our body slows down the production of collagen (collagen is a naturally produced protein in the body from amino acids) but you can also consume it through foods, supplements and topically (with silk threads that dissolve). This new treatment has the ability to “pad” the collagen in the skin when we combine it with micro needling and radio frequency magic happens.

Here is what happens:

Silk collagen protein is built under the skin with nano technology.

The padding of the skin can be impacted by creating micro channels rst so that

the collagen (in nano and amino form) creates a bigger cushion in the skin.

The skin looks fuller, pores are tighter, lines are smoothed and the skin feels rmer

No needle PDO threadlift is the perfect solution for those who want a lift without the pain and downtime of traditional invasive treatments.

Fatal accidents and deaths on Spanish roads - Summer 2023

Two hundred and thirty four people have died in road accidents on Spanish roads during the months of July and August, 7 more fatalities than in 2022,

a rise that has also been re ected in the number of road accidents and the number of people hospitalized, as re ected in the following table:

The acting Minister of the Interior, Fernando-Grande Marlaska, presented this Monday the provisional balance of fatal accidents that occurred during the months of July and August on Spanish roads in a press conference held at the headquarters of the General Directorate of Tra c. in which he has been accompanied by the undersecretary of the department, Isabel Goicoechea and by the general director of Tra c, Pere Navarro.

“In terms of road safety, we are not willing to take even a step back

in our commitment to reduce fatal and serious accidents by fty percent between now and 2030,” said GrandeMarlaska, who recalled that “that is the objective of our Road Safety Strategy, and I am convinced that this objective must also be a country project” because “consolidating a culture of safe mobility that allows us to move forward until we reach that objective is a responsibility that concerns all of us.”

Record of road traveling

During the months of July and August there were 93.6 million longdistance road trips, 0.3% more than last summer, a gure that is the highest recorded in the historical series.

In July there were 45.8 million, 1.07% more than in July 2022, and in August, 47.9 million, that is, 0.46% less than those registered in August of last year.

The day with the highest number of trips was Friday, August 11, with 1.8 million trips, coinciding with the long weekend on August 15, and the day with the least mobility was Saturday, July 11, with 1.3 million.

Furthermore, within the framework of Operation Crossing the Strait, 693,486 vehicles have crossed our country, 11% more than in 2022, an operation that ends on September 15. In addition, another 263,361 vehicles crossed Spain bound for Portugal.

In terms of surveillance and control, the Tra c Group of the Civil Guard has carried out 1.2 million alcohol tests and 18 thousand illegal drug tests.

How to carry pets in your vehicle

Animals that are not properly carried in the vehicle pose a signi cant risk of injury to all occupants, whether they are two-legged or four-legged. Animal welfare and road safety join forces in this case to nd the ideal formula for transporting pets, regardless of their species – although, purely statistically, dogs dominate – and size.

The presence of pets in Spanish homes skyrocketed after the pandemic. According to the National Association of Pet Food Manufacturers (Anfaac), the number of dogs increased by 38% in three years to 9 million in 2021. Six million cats, eight million sh and another ve million birds paint a panorama domestic marked by the increasing relevance of animals in our lives.

Beyond the gures, simple observation gives ample clues to this: tourist destinations and “dog-friendly” attractions are multiplying, the supply of products related to them is growing exponentially and more and more public places allow the presence of dogs. The consequence is inevitable: the greater the integration of the animal, the greater the need to have regulations, standards, means and solutions that facilitate the daily lives of owners and pets.

David Ordóñez, coordinator of the Master in Assisted Intervention with Animals at the University of Jaén and director of Perruneando, a dog training and training company, states that we have reached “a 3.0 version of our relationship with pets, particularly with dogs: in 1.0 the animal provided help in work, hunting, etc.; In 2.0 we had it at home in exchange for a series of bene ts; but now it is part

of people’s lives, it becomes another citizen and another member of the family.”

As a result, mobility with the animal has not been a problem “until people decide that going with their dog to the mall or a restaurant is a good idea.”

The next question is automatic: am I carrying it in the safest way possible?

WHAT THE STANDARD SAYS

The recently approved Law on the Protection, Rights and Welfare of Animals establishes that when traveling, the owner must attend to “the physiological and ethological needs of the animals” and ensure that the means of transport has space and guarantees “road safety and “safety” of

the pet during the journey, but does not detail how to apply it.

For its part, article 13 of the Law on Tra c, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety establishes that the driver must guarantee that nothing hinders or hinders his visibility. For this, he must ensure “the proper placement of transported objects or animals so that there is no interference between the driver and any of them.” Francisco de las Alas-Pumariño, head of the DGT Regulatory Unit, points out that “in an upcoming modi cation of the General Tra c Regulations, the way in which domestic animals should be transported in vehicles will be addressed in greater detail.”
