Twelve-year-old rescued after falling down ravine

A dramatic rescue operation was put into practice on Sunday after the emergency services received a report that a minor had fallen into a ravine. The 12-year-old had to be rescued by re ghters after slipping whilst descending the Sanes Ravine in the Orihuela district of La Aparecida.

The child is believed to have been canyoning from a height of about 5 meters when she fell and, as a consequence su ered a number of traumatic injuries. However, medics at the scene reported that luckily there were no open fractures to her arms or legs.

The Provincial Fire Consortium activated its rescue protocol and a helicopter with the mountain rescue group (GER) was sent immediately to the scene of the accident. It was decided that although there is a path leading to the area, it was not accessible to ambulance

crews. Once there, the GER descended with a rescue doctor to give emergency medical attention to the little girl.

The rescuers and medics were able to stabilise the child and take her back to the helicopter. She was then moved to a nearby area in La Aparecida where the helicopter was able to land safely with professionals on board ready to continue her care at the Alpha 09 medical facility. From that point, the helicopter landed at the Alicante Fire ghters heliport at 6:20pm, where an ambulance was waiting for the girl be taken to hospital.

In total, a senior command unit, a heavy rural truck from the Orihuela re station, a rescue helicopter plus the mountain rescue group were all mobilised. Thanks to the speedy response and the expert care the child was given, it is believed she will make a full recovery.

Rubbish collection investment for Orihuela Costa

The Department of Urban Solid Waste and Street Cleaning in the Orihuela City Council is investing 2,555,000 euros of an ‘extraordinary credit’ from treasury reserves for the renewal and improvement of the street cleaning and rubbish collection service. This represents the largest investment made in this department since direct management was agreed in 2012.

The amount will be submitted for discussion at the Information Commission and raised for debate and vote in the next Plenary Session (council meeting) on 28th September. The councillor for the department, Rocío Ortuño, has asked for unanimous votes in favour from all political groups, given the dire need for service improvement.

Councillor Ortuño explained: “We have been su ering from a signi cant

lack of machinery, containers and personnel for eleven years. Orihuela Clean is the commitment of this government team. We have already brought almost 7 million credit modi cations to the plenary sessions of July and August to meet the payment of the Consortium, unpaid invoices and provision for expenses until the end of the year, among other things.”

“We are talking about a necessary investment demanded by the residents of Orihuela Costa and, especially, by the workers in the area who are going to improve their quality and safety in the development of their work.”

The councillor announced that

6 collection trucks will be acquired, adding to the 19 currently in the eet. In addition, 6 open-box 3,500kg dump trucks of 3,500 kg will be added for the collection of furniture and belongings, which is much-needed, especially on the coast. The department estimates that with this investment, around 2,000 side and rear loading containers can be purchased, for which 800,000 euros will

be allocated. “In this way we can renew half of the allocation since we currently have 3,800 containers, which will mean an important reinforcement in the coastal area and in selective collection at origin.”

On the other hand, the council has announced the acquisition of a hydrocleaner since the one currently in use dates back to 1998 and is at the end of its useful life. Around 80,000 euros will be allocated to its purchase. In addition, 55,000 euros will be for new electric blowers to bolster those already in use.

Mandatory dog insurance delayed

The anticipated enforcement of compulsory pet dog insurance, a key provision within Spain’s newly established animal welfare law, has been postponed from its initial target date of 29th September. This delay comes as a response to the evolving political landscape in Spain.

The Directorate General for Animal Rights, a division operating under the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2023, has issued a directive con rming that the obligatory civil liability insurance for pet dogs will be deferred until a comprehensive regulatory framework is endorsed to accompany the law. This insurance policy is designed to cover potential damages caused by canines to third parties, encompassing property, other animals, or individuals. Once enacted, it will apply to the owners of an estimated nine million pet dogs in Spain, according to data from the Afaac association.

The new animal welfare legislation is designed to advance the cause of animal protection and curtail instances of abandonment. Among its provisions is the mandate for liability insurance for all pet breeds, a requirement previously limited to breeds categorised as potentially dangerous and applicable only in speci c regions.

Additionally, the new regulation calls for dog handlers of certain breeds to undergo a “responsible ownership” course.

Third lane for A-7

Spain’s Ministry of Transport has unveiled an ambitious plan to construct an additional tra c lane on the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo road in Alicante, speci cally within the vicinity bordering the Region of Murcia.

The General Directorate of Roads o cially released the project details for the expansion of the Autovía del Mediterráneo roadway, focusing on the section spanning from Crevillente to Orihuela. With a budget exceeding 94 million euros, the initiative is poised to enhance the infrastructure and tra c ow along this vital corridor. The announcement was published in the O cial State Gazette (BOE) on Tuesday, 19th September.

Despite the longstanding demand for road widening in numerous parts of Murcia, the current initiative is con ned to a 17-kilometer segment of the A-7. Many areas within Murcia have awaited the expansion of this dual carriageway, as it traverses major metropolitan zones including the capital city of Murcia and Lorca.

In close proximity to Murcia city, where tra c is most concentrated, the new lane will integrate with the construction of the Arco Norte. This strategic move aims to relocate the connection point between the A-7 and the A-30, diverting it away from the shopping centres junction.

The Ministry stated, “The objective

of this action is to increase the capacity from two to three lanes on each side of the dual carriageway,” spanning from Crevillente to the Orihuela junction with Benferri. They further emphasised that this development builds upon the previous section, which has featured three lanes on each carriageway since 2008, between Elche and Crevillente. While the project had been included in past General State Budgets, it had not yet progressed to the tendering stage until now. This signi cant step forward underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering the region’s transportation infrastructure, ultimately bene ting residents and commuters alike.

Spanish motorways remain toll-free

Championed by the Minister for Social Rights, Ione Belarra, the law received approval in March from the Congress of Deputies. It also stipulates stringent conditions for animal euthanasia, reserving it for highly speci c situations aimed at preventing undue su ering. The law further introduces oversight in animal breeding practices and fosters responsible adoption.

Notably, hunting dogs will not be subject to the provisions of the new regulations. The deferment of pet dog insurance implementation re ects a conscientious approach to ensure that the law is e ectively enacted and aligned with broader animal welfare objectives in Spain.

In a relief for drivers across Spain, the European Commission has rejected the initial proposal to impose toll charges on the country’s motorways in 2024. Following extensive negotiations with the Spanish Government, the European Commission has accepted Spain’s alternative plan, e ectively averting the transformation of autovías into paid toll roads.

The Commission has given its nod to the Spanish Government’s decision to “remove from the Recovery Plan the initial idea of introducing payment for the use of highways.” This decision marks the ful lment of promises made by Spanish authorities, with the European Union agreeing to waive the requirement for funds to nance Spanish motorways. Instead, the

Spanish Government has committed to implementing a series of alternative measures focused on environmental conservation and energy e ciency.

One pivotal initiative in this endeavour is the introduction of a Sustainable Mobility Law, aimed at enhancing the planning, coordination, and e cacy of public transportation policies. This legislation will incorporate speci c provisions to bolster rail freight transport, with the ultimate goal of reducing emissions from land transport.

Outlined within the proposed measures are mandates for the implementation of a rail highway development program, discounts on rail charges for freight tra c, and the establishment of a support program

for the rail transport of goods.

The new strategy seeks to discourage road haulage and actively encourage the transport of goods via rail, aligning with broader European objectives to decarbonize land transportation.

These measures align with existing European environmental and transportation policies, prioritizing investments in ecological and digital transitions, as well as sustainable transport. Notably, there is an ongoing e ort to revamp the rail network along the Mediterranean, stretching from France to Andalucía, through the development of the ‘Mediterranean Corridor’. This initiative aims to not only expedite train transport but also render it more sustainable in the long run.

La Hoya underway

In a bold move that has stirred controversy, and at time of going to print, construction was set to yesterday (Monday 25th) on the La Hoya urbanisation project, a sprawling development destined to house an additional 7,500 properties in Torrevieja. Eduardo Dolón, Mayor of Torrevieja, was expected to preside over the groundbreaking ceremony, bearing responsibility for this ambitious urban development. This initiative comes in spite of the city’s existing surplus of vacant dwellings, primarily attributed to a dwindling population.

Spanning an impressive 1.8 million square meters, the La Hoya estate is strategically positioned adjacent to the CV-road, nestled between the established Jardin Del Mar

and La Siesta urbanisations.

Anticipating a potential in ux of 18,000 new residents, or an equivalent number of vacancies, the project also encompasses a commercial precinct spanning an expansive 100,000 square meters.

The development is anticipated to take a staggering 25 years to complete, and its development has been entrusted to the Temporary Union of Companies, an entity comprised of Grupo TM Torrevieja, Grupo Corpic de Elche, Eurovillas del Mar, and Urbanizadora S-14.

Notably, Grupo TM and Grupo Corpic, recognized for their expertise in tourism-residential ventures, hold the largest stake in the land ownership.

A budget of 57 million euros has been allocated

for crucial infrastructure, encompassing roads, utilities, lighting, sanitation networks, water supply, green spaces, and stormwater management. This last component assumes particular signi cance, as the region is susceptible to ooding, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. The construction of buildings in this area could exacerbate an already strained drainage system, leaving existing property owners struggling to sell homes a ected by persistent ooding.

While the land was once classi ed as undevelopable, in 2009, the land was reclassi ed, paving the way for the construction of both the International Auditorium and the San Jaime Hospital, now known as Quironsalud.

Alicante is hub for British TIE Card holders

In a recent report released by the Ministry for Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, it has been revealed that a signi cant quarter of all British TIE card holders in Spain are concentrated in the province of Alicante.

This revelation comes as part of a broader analysis, which also highlights that approximately one-third of the total 208,000 British nationals possessing TIE cards fall within the over 65 age bracket.

The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) card has become a prized possession for British expatriates residing in Spain, a ording them access to a host of rights that were previously enjoyed by EU citizens. However, postBrexit, these privileges are no longer automatically extended to the majority of Britons, who are now considered citizens of “third countries,” on par with nationals from countries such as the United States or Japan.

Eligibility for a TIE card is limited to British nationals who can furnish evidence of their legal residency in Spain prior to 1st January, 2021, and have continuously maintained this

Alicante-Elche Airport scoops

‘Best Airport in Europe’

Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport has been crowned as the ‘Best Airport in Europe’. The esteemed accolade was bestowed upon the airport at the start of September by the Airports Council International (ACI) during a grand Gala Dinner held in Incheon, South Korea.

Laura Navarro, the Director of Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport, had the honour of receiving the award in the category catering to airports handling 15 to 25 million passengers.

status.

One notable concern raised in the report is that approximately 211,000 Britons and their family members, who were previously registered as EU citizens, have yet to complete the transition from the traditional green paper certi cate to the coveted TIE card.

The data underscores the importance of timely action for those a ected by these changes in residency status, as failing to obtain a TIE card may impact their access to various rights and privileges in Spain. The province of Alicante, in particular, has emerged as a key hub for British residents taking advantage of this essential documentation.

As the situation continues to evolve, it remains crucial for a ected individuals to remain informed about the latest developments in residency requirements and to take appropriate steps to secure their legal status in Spain.

This recognition was initially unveiled in March of this year during the ACI Customer Experience Global Summit, an event that brought together over 500 distinguished airport executives, all with a keen focus on enhancing customer experience. What lends considerable weight to these awards is that they are determined based on feedback gathered from passengers through ASQ surveys (Airport Service Quality program), meticulously conducted by ACI.

The airport boasts state-of-the-art amenities, featuring an array of shops, restaurants, and duty-free outlets. With its two well-maintained runways, the airport accommodates a diverse range of both domestic and international ights, solidifying its position as a crucial transportation hub and providing seamless connectivity to the Costa Blanca region.

Beyond its role in passenger services, the airport also plays a pivotal part in cargo operations, further contributing to the tourism and overall economic development of the area.

This latest recognition solidi es Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport’s commitment to excellence in service, underlining its pivotal role in the region’s aviation landscape. The award is not only a testament to the airport’s dedication but also a testament to the satisfaction and trust of the millions of passengers it serves.

How to create an investment plan that can help you build an income, retire early or just get richer

Do you invest? The fact that you are reading this article greatly increases the chance that you do.

What’s less likely is that you have an investment plan.

And by that I mean a clearly de ned plan of what you are investing for and how you plan to do it.

So how do you come up with an investment plan? Well, if you follow these 4 steps you will be well on your way to having a plan.

Know what you want from investing

The question of what you are investing for is an important one to answer when creating your investment plan.

If you are investing in retirement or to increase your income, look at how much you want that income to be - and be realistic about the number.

Work out how much you have to invest

As much as possible isn’t really the best answer here.

If you don’t work out how much that is each month or year – and how that ts into the rest of your nances, be that everyday life, savings, home or debts - then you aren’t setting yourself up properly.

Consider how much risk you are willing to take

Risk is a di cult concept to get your head round when investing. Yet, in reality, we take and calculate risks all the time and so are capable of weighing them up.

Work out your investing strategy

Working out your strategy involves combining what you want, how much you have, and the risk you are willing to take to come up with a coherent plan.

Even if you have put in the legwork on the other bits of the investment plan, this is likely to be where you come unstuck.

If all this sounds daunting, then help is at hand as the Seagate team has a wealth of experience and have several options with international companies to help manage the risks and diversify your portfolio.

GBP

The Bank of England (BoE) surprised some (but not all) with their decision to maintain UK rates at 5.25% this week. The move marked the rst pause in rate hikes from the BoE after 14-straight increases and came after recent gures con rmed an unexpected faster slowdown in in ation during August, which had encouraged several analysts to change their predicted outcome to a pause for this meeting. The decision was a very close call, with ve MPC members voting for a pause, against four voting for a 25bps rate hike.

During his post-meeting press conference, BoE Governor Andrew Bailey said; ‘in ation has fallen a lot in recent months, and we think it will continue to do so.’ Despite the good news for UK borrowers, Bailey warned against a ’premature celebration’, given that there is still a long way to go before in ation reaches the BoE’s longstanding target level of 2%.

Furthermore, with the recent rises in energy prices expected to increase headline in ation over the coming months, a cautious welcome to the news seems sensible. Much the same as the Fed, the BoE warned that moving to a pause should not mean that the chances of any imminent rate cuts have materially increased.

The news will also be good news for the government, who have been burdened with existing debt interest payments. The government will have also welcomed con rmation on the same day that the latest government borrowing requirements came in under the OBR’s March expectations.

The pound slipped to a multi-month low on the BoE news, with GBP/USD moving under 1.2300 for the rst occasion since April, and

GBP/EUR slipping to a two-month low under 1.1530. GBP/USD has been under intense selling pressures of late, consistent with other major currencies against the resurgent dollar.

EUR

Last week’s decision by the ECB to raise Euro area interest rates by another 25bps has done little to halt the decline for the single currency. During that time, ECB o cials have continued to highlight the prospect for further rate hikes in the region, given that in ation is not falling ‘at the desired pace.’ Markets have focused on the outlook for the region’s growth, which is likely to remain constricted, as incoming economic data signals the potential for further weakness.

Market-implied prospects for further ECB rate hikes in this environment have therefore diminished signi cantly, even if the ECB are still suggesting otherwise. EUR/USD yesterday (Thursday) hit a cycle low of 1.0616, a level not tested since March. The pair is now heading towards a tenth-straight week of declines, its worst weekly run since 2014. Perhaps the best chance of a reversal in EUR/USD might currently be the dollar reaching exhaustion point, after such a long and powerful rally (see USD).

Regional in ation data will be the major highlight among incoming economic data for next week. With energy prices rising sharply, headline CPI could be vulnerable to an upside surprise, when September’s preliminary gures are released. Germany release their latest in ation updates a day beforehand. Today’s (Friday) PMI updates are likely to re ect softness across the region, with the ongoing softness among manufacturing morphing into a previously-resistant service sector.

Neighbours of San Miguel de Salinas request the reopening of the Padre Jesús park

Juan de Dios Fresneda, mayor of the municipality, commits to activating its reopening.

With the call and celebration of a protest rally at the entrance gate of the Padre Jesús park in San Miguel de Salinas, the ‘San Miguel Arcángel’ Neighbourhood Association echoes the citizen’s unrest due to the prolonged stoppage of the remodeling works. of the park and is o ered as a channel for the resolution of this con ict.

The municipal plenary session on December 18, 2020 agreed to remodel the park and to do so, the Alicante Provincial Council’s Plan + Cerca was adopted. The contract was awarded on July 7, 2022, but only for the rst phase of the works for an amount of €128,000 with an execution period of two months. A year later, on July 25, 2023, a new contract was awarded for the purchase and installation of the park’s games and furniture for an amount of €236,733 and a completion period of three months, of which two have been consumed.

The Neighbourhood Association describes the behavior of the municipal government as laziness and

neglect since it has spent almost three years remodeling the park, depriving children of the use and enjoyment of the main green and recreational space in the urban area. Padre Jesús Park is located a few meters from the Gloria Fuertes preschool and primary school and in one of the most densely populated areas of the municipality.

The association denounces that, fourteen months later, the debris from the park remodeling works remains in a lot on the outskirts of the municipality instead of being taken to an authorized manager, as stated in the contract speci cations. In addition to contaminating the soil and spoiling the landscape, the municipal government has opened an illegal land ll. They regret that the city council, instead of combating illegal land lls, generates them and ask for the immediate removal and subsequent recycling of construction debris.

The mayor of the municipality, Juan de Dios Fresneda , conveys that the government team is aware of the existing concern about the Padre Jesús park. Therefore, they have explained the situation and the solutions

in a short space of time.

Firstly, it has been agreed with the company that obtained the tender that the park will be open in four or six weeks at most, although some of the planned children’s games will be incorporated later.

The rst phase , subsidized by the Provincial Council, was completed but once nished and with plans to begin the second phase, it was when the council did not have the necessary technicians to carry out the tender.

At this time , the second phase is being tendered and awarded to a company that has informed the council of its readiness to begin work on it. For this reason, the City Council has activated the reopening of Padre Jesús Park.

Fresneda understands the neighbors’ concern and adopts the commitment that the park will be open, even without completely completing the second phase, and appreciates the patience on the part of the neighbours who “will be rewarded with the facilities at the level of what they deserve.” the population of San Miguel de Salinas.

Traffic playground reopens its doors completely remodelled

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, along with the councilman of Safety and Emergencies, Federico Alarcón, the mayor of Education, Ricardo Recuero, the quartermaster of the Local Police, Alejandro Morer, local police and professor of Driver Education courses, Antonio Alarcón, and the managing director of AkraSeñal, Salvador Girona, have attended this morning at the reopening of the Children’s Tra c Park of Torrevieja, which has been completely remodeled, with an investment of 110. 110,000 euros, and which has been closed to the public since the beginning of the pandemic. Primary school pupils from the Inmaculada public school took part in the reopening of the park.

The Children’s Tra c Park, which opened in 1996, has been visited every year by around 5,000 infant and primary pupils from schools in Torrevieja and other towns in the Vega Baja area.

In addition, the kerbs and tra c islands have been repainted after resurfacing, new LED tra c lights have been installed, and new vertical signage made entirely of aluminium. Finally, a total of 10 pedal go-karts have been purchased for use in the Children’s Park.

On the occasion of the European Mobility Week, during this week, from 17:00 to 19:00 hours, there will be open days for all those who wish to visit it. In

addition, road safety education courses for primary and secondary school pupils from all the local schools will begin shortly.

I am a woman of 62; my youthful and vibrant years are behind me; however, I have always looked after myself. I do yoga five times a week, and my body is good for someone of my age - I am slim and have kept my looks (without sounding too boastful); although I am aging of course - there’s no stopping that, but I am doing so gracefully and with dignity. I hoped that my partner of 7 years would appreciate all this, but over the years he has lost all interest. Before we moved in together, he would complement me, make a fuss of me, buy me lingerie etc. I felt special and loved. It felt awkward trying to bring the matter up for discussion, so I kept on hoping it was a temporary thing and tried everything I could think of, to try and restore former relations. The other day I asked him to give me a massage as my shoulder was aching. I had hoped it might lead somewhere: he went out and bought me an electric massager so I could massage my shoulder myself. Why has everything changed? And why am I made to feel unattractive and blame myself? I am on the edge of telling him our relationship is over; I have sunk so low with depression over it all.

You have tried everything, but nothing has changed, and won’t unless you take drastic action and sit him down for an honest conversation. Men can experience a decrease in their level of testosterone at this age. If your partner has withdrawn from you, he will most likely feel embarrassed, and his last thoughts will be the impact this will have on your self-esteem. Of course, you will take it personally - what does he expect? However, most women will understand, and be relieved to know, ‘it is not them’. If only men would stop shutting down their emotions and just talk.

Repair work begins on the pedestrian path in La Mata

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, along with the Councillor for Infrastructure and Urban Management, Sandra Sanchez, the Councillor for Beaches, Antonio Vidal, and representatives of the company awarded ORTHEM-ABALA TORREVIEJA, has visited the repair works of the pedestrian path of La Mata, which began yesterday, and has an award amount of 3,929,612.38 € (VAT included), having applied a 10% drop in the bid price. The works are expected to take one year to complete and will cover a total area of 1,317 linear metres.

The scope of the works to be undertaken includes the discontinuous area of occupation of the promenade between the boundary of the municipalities of Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura, up to the boundary between the Molino del Agua Park and Sector P-4, Molino Blanco.

The project is not continuous and is divided into three sections:

*NORTHERN STREET, between the northern boundary of the municipal area and Plaza Encarnación Puchol, having a length of 306.25 linear metres.

*CENTRE STREET, between the south of the Plaza de Encarnación Puchol and the Avenida de Los Europeos, and has a length of 658.85 linear metres.

*SOUTH STREET, located entirely in the Molino del Agua Park, with a length of 352 linear metres.

The councillor for Infrastructures and Town Planning Management has reported that with the execution of these works, the intention is to

carry out the complete repair of the pedestrian path in the northern and central sections, originally built with wooden decking, and the punctual and super cial repair of the pavement in the southern area. It is also intended to carry out the renovation of the street lighting in the three sections for models with LED technology.

After numerous meetings and di erent proposals addressed to Costas, the Torrevieja Town Hall has obtained the de nitive authorisation to maintain practically the existing route, except in four points expressly indicated in the reports of the Provincial Coastal Service, where part of the original path and also drinking water and sanitation services need to be moved to a transit easement area, as they are currently occupying the Maritime Terrestrial Public Domain (DPMT).

As for the constructive solution, the current path will be renovated with another ecological and dismountable “wooden” appearance, thus reducing maintenance and achieving greater durability. The pavement will be made of technological wood with three structural typologies, the rst with a distance between the axes of the piles of 2.20 metres, the second with a distance between axes of 1.90 metres and the third typology is a horizontal structure supported directly on the sand. The solution in all three cases consists of creating a rigid platform made up of 3 metre wide and 2.90 metre long modules.

The solution adopted in the work guarantees sustainability and recycling, given that raw materials are used in the production and supply of the

material, combining 70% recycled pine wood products with 30% high-density polyethylene, which contributes to reducing the felling of forests and CO2 emissions.

Another singular action contained in the works is the demolition of a footbridge originally built in printed concrete in the southern section, which is being replaced by a wooden footbridge of approximately 120 metres in length, to better adapt to the

environment of the Natural Park.

The works started yesterday in the central section, speci cally in Avenida de Los Europeos, and will progress in the direction of Plaza Encarnación Puchol, so as not to a ect the shops with terraces which are still taking advantage of the good weather at this time of year.

Finally, the deadline for the execution of all the works is one year, although the mayor of Torrevieja

has reported that the City Council is considering the option of carrying out partial receptions of the works, to be opening to citizens the sections to be executed. In addition, Eduardo Dolon has indicated that he hopes that before the beginning of next summer the main actions will be completely executed, in order to o er an optimal quality service to the thousands of tourists and residents who enjoy this promenade of the beach of La Mata.

• Using the same password on more than one site

• Downloading software from the Internet

• Clicking on links in email messages

2-Step Veri cation can help keep bad guys out, even if they have your password. Signing into your account will work a little di erently.

• You’ll enter your password.

• Whenever you sign into Google, you’ll enter your password as usual.

• You’ll be asked for something else

• Then, a code will be sent to your phone via text, voice call, or our mobile app. Or, if you have a Security Key, you can insert it into your computer’s USB port. It’s an extra layer of security. Take the picturesque water route of Bolulla

This hidden gem is located inland of the Costa Blanca about an hour drive from Benidorm, Altea or Calpe. The Bolulla water route has enhanced the small village it surrounds, and includes, beautiful walkways, cascades, and an old mill. The walk takes about an hour at a slow pace, which makes it suitable for families with children, and ideal for dog walking. There are some uneven pathways which are not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Parking can be found at the start of the route (Ruta del Agua de Bolulla 03518 Bolulla, Alicante), indicated by signposts. The

rst cascade you come across is the Font dels Xorros, which is particularly spectacular to see straight after a rainfall. As you follow the path, you pass a small aqueduct that diverts the waters of the Azud to the orchards on the other side of the river.

The Bolulla Mill

The path continues along a dirt track and you will cross a small stream that sometimes carries a small amount of water. After this, you will see the remains of the old Bolulla Mill, which was in operation until the 20th century.

It is a our mill that was used by both the farmers of Bolulla and those of Tárbena, the next closest town. This mill was supplied with water from the Bolulla River that was diverted through an irrigation ditch from the Assut del Molí. The water fell forcefully from this source towards the wheels that drove the millstones to grind the wheat and corn. A system that was used in numerous places in the province such as the Molí del Salt in Benilloba or the Molinar in Alcoy. Today, this water ends up in a large pond located just above the mill, which always has water. The

route ends here, at the road, and from this point you can turn around and enjoy the same walk back. One of the good things about linear routes is that, even when you pass through the same place twice, the landscape is always di erent. Also, it allows you to enjoy places that you have already visited from another perspective. Ruta del Agua de Bolulla 03518 Bolulla, Alicante.

ATG Starting rehearsals and charity donations

Anyone who has indulged in amateur dramatics knows that one of the biggest challenges is getting everyone together in the same place at the same time! Fortunately we hit the jackpot at our rst rehearsal of Ali Baba and the Four and a Half Thieves with nearly all the actors present and looking forward to getting started. The rst job is an initial run-through so that actors get the sense, not only of their own parts, but of what is going on around them at any given time. Some of our actors this year already had their lines learnt which was a great boost and really helped things ow. As the Adapt Theatre Group pantos are bilingual as we like to perform for our Spanish neighbours, another big challenge is learning some of the Spanish lines. In order to do that each actor is sent an audio

le to help with pronunciation. Our Spanish audiences always seem to enjoy our e orts so we must be doing something right!

There’s still a very long way to go, learning to really act out the characters, practising the singing and dancing and tting in all the music and sound e ects, not to mention props, costumes and make-up. It’s a complicated job but one we all really enjoy putting together as a team and know that the result will raise money for a good cause.

Throughout our 13-year history, the ADAPT Theatre Group has worked hard to raise money for local charities. Once a year we buy basic school materials for children without resources, we donate nappies to the Gota de Leche project in Cartagena and last year we starting working with

AFEMAR, a non-pro t charitable organisation that works with people with mental health problems in the Mar Menor area.

This organisation runs a day centre with professionals from many disciplines providing a whole range of projects and workshops. It also has an after-school programme and works to support families. Their centre in San Pedro has a wonderfully warm and welcoming atmosphere and we are delighted to be able to work more closely with them in the future, especially by donating our panto pro ts to such an excellent cause.

New door-to-door collection service for organic waste and glass packaging waste recycling launched

The Councillor for Urban Waste Management of the City of Torrevieja, María José Ruiz, and the president of the Association of Hospitality Businesses of Torrevieja and Region (AEHTC), José Ignacio Pastor, presented at a press conference the new service door to door collection of organic waste and recycling of glass packaging waste, which manages Ecovidrio, and that both have a grant from the European Union (EU).

DOOR-TO-DOOR ORGANIC WASTE COLLECTION SERVICE

María José Ruiz explained that, based on the census of large waste producers in Torrevieja (bars and restaurants, hotels, etc.) a campaign has been carried out to inform all of them of the new door-to-door collection service for large producers of organic waste.

After this campaign, the large producers who have wished to join have been provided with a 120 litre brown bin, which is used for the deposit of organic waste generated in their establishment, as well as a kit of biocompostable bags for the bin. In these bins they can deposit fruit and vegetable waste, meat and sh waste, eggshells, seafood, dried fruit and nuts, tea and co ee grounds, as well as other food waste.

The type of waste to be deposited in the container, the days and times of collection in your establishment, has been transmitted through the delivery of a lea et with information on this

new service that aims to make recycling increasingly e ective in the hospitality sector.

The collection will take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in the morning (from 7:00 a.m.) and the establishments that have signed up are restaurants and hotels in the city.

The councillor for Urban Waste Services also announced this morning the campaign aimed at the local hotel and catering trade which has been launched by Ecovidrio, the nonpro t organisation responsible for the management of packaging waste recycling in Spain.

From Ecovidrio HORECA actions are developed to support the premises of hospitality, provide them with means and encourage the recycling of glass containers, at no cost to the City of Torrevieja, nor for the hoteliers.

María José Ruiz recalled that the Integral Waste Plan of the Valencian Community that establishes the obligation for catering establishments to separate glass containers and deposit them in the appropriate containers.

In the rst phase, all catering establishments are visited by environmental educators and are given a letter of introduction signed by the

Town Council. In addition, during this rst visit, a questionnaire is completed to determine whether the premises are recyclers or not and whether they need the means to recycle. Once all the premises have been visited, bins for separating glass are given to the hotel and catering establishments that request them. In addition, the eet of

containers is checked and adapted for easy emptying of the glass and if there is a need for more containers in the street, they are placed with the authorisation of the City Council itself. In the second phase of the campaign, only those premises that have not been receptive in the rst phase, or that have been found not to be recyclers, are

visited again to inform them again of the need for their collaboration, and if necessary, because there are still doubtful premises or non-recyclers after two visits, they are visited again to try to get them to participate in this necessary and important campaign to encourage the recycling of glass containers in the hotel and catering sector.

The low down on prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is a disease that a ects millions of men worldwide, hence the importance of prevention and early diagnosis to preserve their health and well-being. For this reason, the specialists in Urology of Quirónsalud Torrevieja explain what prostate cancer is, what are the frequent symptoms and how to detect it in time.

Symptoms

“In most cases prostate cancer is asymptomatic, so the diagnosis can be detected after performing the test known as PSA (Prostate Speci c Antigen),” say urology specialists.

Obviously, when the disease is in a more advanced stage, it can present symptoms related to the disease, especially due to involvement of other organs outside the gland.

However, it may happen that a patient diagnosed with prostate cancer presents symptoms as a result of having a prostate that generates obstruction to the exit of urine, these symptoms do not necessarily have to correspond to prostate cancer, but are due to benign prostatic growth.

Tests

Prostate cancer is diagnosed by prostate biopsy, which consists of extracting fragments of the prostate with a ne needle in order to analyse them and establish a correct diagnosis based on each gradation of the tumour. There are other tests that the doctor may request to help in the decision of prostate biopsy such as prostate magnetic resonance, so it is important to consult with the urology specialist

so that he can assess the most correct action in each case.

Risk factors

Age:

Prostate cancer increases with age, especially after age 50-60. More than 80% of prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in men over age 65.

Race/Ethnicity:

Black men have a higher risk of prostate cancer than white men.

Family history: The relationship between prostate cancer and heredity is known due to a combination of genes and environmental or lifestyle factors.

The hereditary component should be suspected when three or more rstdegree relatives have had prostate cancer, a ecting three generations on the same side of the family.

Eating habits:

Although there is no clear evidence that directly relates food with the development and prevention of cancer, we know that certain eating behaviours can be related to the appearance of cancer, so a healthy and varied diet is recommended.

Keys to preventing prostate cancer

“The fundamental thing, as in other diseases, is to be able to make an early diagnosis to be able to treat the disease at an early stage of its evolution,” insist experts in urology.

Therefore, in the case of prostate cancer, periodic check-ups are essential

for early diagnosis.

Revisions with prostate-speci c antigen (PSA) are recommended in men at least annually.

Regarding the prevention of prostate cancer, and taking into account that there is still no clear scienti c evidence regarding the relationship of cancer with diet, some rules of conduct that may be bene cial can be recommended:

– Control and reduce the consumption of foods rich in animal fat.

– A diet rich in vegetables, fruits and legumes.

– Ensure good hydration, drinking water regularly depending on physical activity or other recommendations of your doctor.

– Perform physical exercise according

to their general health situation.

The prevention of both this and other pathologies is to try to lead a healthy lifestyle and, in case of new voiding symptoms or doubts, it is necessary to go to the specialist.

Prostate Cancer Treatments

For the treatment of prostate cancer there are several types of treatment, the most common are:

• Expectant management: it is indicated in the patient where it is expected that the tumour is not very aggressive. The conduct would be that of active surveillance. This treatment option involves strict monitoring to control changes in the evolution of the tumour and thus take a di erent action.

• Surgical treatment by radical prostatectomy. It is done with the intention of removing the prostate and its capsule, sometimes you also have to remove the lymph nodes in the area.

• Radiotherapy. It uses high-energy rays for the destruction of tumour tissue.

• Hormone therapy. It is used to block hormones that promote the development of cancer.

Any of these treatments has its advantages and disadvantages, so the information of the specialist is essential for a good decision by the patient as to what their expectations are to face the disease and therapeutic options. Consult any questions with the specialists in Urology of Quirónsalud.

All batteries in EU to be recyclable by 2027 at Spain’s instigation

Batteries from mobile phones, laptops and even cars are among those that must be recyclable within the next four years in accordance with a new European Union regulation,

as explained by Spain’s minister for ecological transition.

Teresa Ribera says reusing the materials in batteries, particularly lithium, will mean Spain and the rest of

A car catches fire in l orad

the EU will be able to produce new ones on home soil.

“At the end of their useful life, batteries contain many valuable resources, and we should be able to use these critical primary materials again instead of depending upon third countries to supply them,” Sra Ribera explains.

The requirement, voted on in the Council of Europe – currently presided by Spain – will be enforced in all member States from the year 2027.

“These new rules will help make European industry more competitive, and will guarantee that new batteries are sustainable and contribute towards the ‘green’ transition,” says Teresa Ribera.

All batteries, and remains of incomplete batteries, will be subject to the regulation – from machinery

of all sizes from industrial to small electronics, from those sold in packs in supermarkets for household implements such as clocks and torches, and from vehicles.

This includes batteries used in conventional-fuel cars to make them start, as well as those used instead of fuel in electricallypowered vehicles.

Guidelines and requisites for collecting, dismantling and passing on used batteries are now being drawn up, and will place greater responsibility on producers of all types of industrial and consumer goods.

They will be expected to collect up and reuse material from 63% of battery waste by the year 2027, and at least 73% from the year 2033.

By the end of 2027, a minimum of

50% of lithium from discarded batteries must be reused, rising to at least 80% by the year 2031.

These targets may be amended over time according to the market, advances in technology, and availability of material, Teresa Ribera says.

Minimum recycling targets will be set from the start for di erent types of industrial battery material – 16% for cobalt, 85% for lead and 6% for lithium and nickel.

Batteries will no longer be xed or built-in parts of any product or machinery from the beginning of 2027 - they will be required to be removable by the end user or consumer, or by professional mechanics in the case of vehicles.

This means manufacturers have three-and-a-half years to amend their product designs if necessary.

From 2026, all devices must carry labels detailing their components and how much of each have been recycled, and from 2027, this information must be available to consult by scanning a QR code.

The causes of the re are unknown.

On the morning of Saturday, 23rd September, a vehicle caught re in the town centre of Almoradí.

The vehicle, which was on Avenida Príncipe de España, started to burn,

but thanks to the rapid intervention of the Almoradí Fire Station, there was no further damage other than to the car itself.

A rescue van with a heavy rural pump was mobilised to the scene of the re.

Red Bull return to winning ways

Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix witnessed a spectacular return to form for Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing as they clinched victory after a nail-biting rst lap, leaving McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri trailing in their wake. The triumph also sealed another constructors’ title for the Milton Keynes-based team. Verstappen exhibited nerves of steel as he fended o relentless attacks from Piastri and Norris at the race’s outset. Negotiating through Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car phases, he then surged ahead, claiming the coveted checkered ag for an impressive 13th time this season.

With this triumph, Red Bull have e ectively put the constructors’ championship out of reach for their competitors, solidifying their 2022 success and marking two consecutive victories. This feat underscores the team’s dominance in the latest F1 ground e ect era, a testament to their prowess following earlier team titles secured in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Meanwhile, a erce duel between the McLaren teammates ultimately favoured Norris, who seized the lead at the start, brie y dropping behind when Piastri pitted during a Virtual Safety Car period. Norris then demonstrated exceptional pace, allowing the team to make a strategic position swap.

Charles Leclerc spearheaded Ferrari’s campaign, clinching fourth place with a bold, late manoeuvre against Mercedes rival George Russell. Russell, opting for a daring one-stop strategy unlike the other front-runners, faced intense pressure from teammate Lewis Hamilton in the closing laps. Eventually, Russell yielded as per team instructions, after a heart-stopping wheel-to-wheel duel earlier in the race.

Carlos Sainz capitalised on Russell’s aging tires, seizing sixth place behind

Hamilton. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and the Alpines of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly secured the nal points of the day, despite an early hiccup for Alonso.

AlphaTauri initially showed promise, with their cars starting in the top ten. However, as various strategies unfolded, their challenge faded. F1 newcomer Liam Lawson edged out home favourite Yuki Tsunoda, claiming 11th and 12th positions respectively.

Zhou Guanyu rebounded admirably from rst lap chaos, nishing in 13th place, the sole Alfa Romeo driver to cross the line after his teammate Valtteri Bottas was sent into the gravel by Williams’ Logan Sargeant.

The Haas duo of Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen rounded o the nishers in 14th and 15th positions, continuing their 2023 season trend marked by tire degradation struggles. Several cars behind them retired at

di erent stages.

Williams su ered a double disappointment, with Sargeant returning to the garage after a collision with Bottas, following prerace penalties and a pit lane start due to extensive car changes stemming from a qualifying crash. Albon, entangled in his own Lap 1 incident with the Alfa Romeo, retired with damage.

The race saw early clashes, including Red Bull’s Sergio Perez tangling with Hamilton, and later with Magnussen, leading to Perez’s second pit stop for a new front wing, ultimately resulting in his retirement. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll joined the list of retirees, facing a rear wing issue.

In a race marked by stunning displays of skill and relentless battles, Verstappen’s triumphant return to the top of the podium will surely be etched in the annals of F1 history as a standout moment of the 2023 season.

On arrival at Alicante, we received the usual friendly greeting from the caddy master and his team with everything ready and waiting, the course was in great condition but the bunkers were shy of sand due to the thunder storms the previous two days. The weather was blue skies, sunny with a temperature of 35 degrees.

SAMM Racing had no surprises

The second race day of the SAMM autumn season on Sunday September 17th went well with no surprises. The rst race was delayed due to lack of wind and did not start until 12:00, with only 2.8 knots, but, as none of the Balaton Sail sh were competing, it was decided to go ahead. Excellent start with all 5 dinghies over the line within 30 seconds. Despite the conditions all boats managed to complete 4 laps. By the start of the second race the wind direction had changed so it was decided to reverse the course. Due to error by the Race O cer the start was slightly chaotic and a total recall had to be made! Within 5 minutes race was under way again with all dinghies crossing the line together. The wind had increased to 6 knots which helped the competitors have a classic race with four boats completing 7 laps and one 6 laps.

followed at + 20 seconds with Gineta way behind the line not being able to make any headway.

The wind speed dropped to 3 or 4 knots as Dos lead at the rst mark, followed by Tres and Cuatro 2 minutes behind. Gineta had still not started.

At the end of the rst lap, Tres had managed to catch Dos and they completed the lap neck and neck. The wind by this time was very light and variable. Gineta managed to cross the start line, then stopped with sail problems and drifted backwards across the line. Later she had to be rescued from the race by the support boat and retired.

Everyone had a good day, despite the changing wind directions and the average lap times in seconds after applying handicaps were. First race, Cuatro 509, Uno 530, Dos 541, Tres 565, Laser Radial 572. Second race, Cuatro 367, Dos 384, Laser Radial 412, Tres 419, Uno 439.

The next race day was Wednesday September 20th and 4 boats signed on to race. Dos, Tres, Cuatro, Gineta. Race 1 again being delayed waiting for enough wind, starting with 5 knots south westerly at 11:15. Dos was rst over the line at only +1 second, closely followed by Tres at +5 seconds. Cuatro

At the end of the second lap both Dos and Tres tried di erent tracks to nd the breeze, the wind now down to 3 knots variable south easterly. Tres rounded the rst mark ahead of Dos, who then caught up and passed Tres at the second mark. Cuatro was still behind by one mark. The 2 leading boats changed places yet again, with Tres crossing the nishing line ahead of Dos, followed by Cuatro some minutes later.

Cuatro retired to the shore, leaving only 2 boats to race. The skippers both agreed that the wind was too light and variable to continue to race. The second race was then abandoned. The wind remained light until we left, after 2:30 pm.

Rather a disappointing day, but we tried. Result after handicaps were Dos 1090, Tres 1140, Cuatro 1407.

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 17th of September we shed the El Bosquet complex at Crevillent. Seventeen anglers attended and we shed pegs B1 to 7 and 26 to 40 on what was a lovely sunny day after the recent storms.

Winner on the day was the man with the golden drawing arm Steve Higgins. Drawn once again on the very fancied peg B1 he shed pellets and maggots and weighed 19.42kg. He was closely followed by Neil McBernie on peg 2 who used similar tactics for 25,42kg. to take second place.

In Third place drawn on yet another fancied peg , peg 26 was Russell Davidson with 24.62kg. Russell shed the pole long to take some decent carp. The bottom section shed very pooly and was won by John Havercoft on peg 38 with 3.47kg.

The following day the match should have been on the Rio Segura at Murcia town centre , This match was canceeld after the recent rains which made the river un shable a picture attached shows the river in full ood.
