Time running out for UK licence holders

Time is running out for UK driving licence holders who only have until 15th September to exchange their licence for a Spanish one. From that date it will no longer be legal to drive on Spanish roads with a UK licence.

On 15 March 2023, the UK and Spain reached an agreement on a driving licence exchange, which enabled UK licence holders living in Spain to swap their UK licence for a Spanish one without needing to take a practical or theory test.

The agreement gave existing residents who had not yet exchanged their UK licences for a Spanish one six months (until 15th September) to

do so, during which time they could continue to drive on their UK licences.

For newly arrived residents, the agreement gave them six months from the date they acquired their residency documents to exchange their UK licence. Licences can be exchanged after the six month period but will no longer be considered valid for driving in Spain.

The British Embassy has been urging UK licence holders to make the exchange by 15th September.

In March the Ambassador hosted a ‘Facebook Live’ to address frequently asked questions, whilst the Embassy has advised that anyone struggling

to get an appointment at their local Dirección General de Trá co O ce to go to a neighbouring one instead.

Last week, the British Embassy

announced a resolution had been found to an issue which some holders of expired UK licences (typically those over 70) had been experiencing when

trying to exchange their licences. Those a ected should follow the established process for exchange, requesting their check code via gov.uk.

His Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott said: “It is very important that UK licence holders who lived in Spain prior to 15th March 2023 and want to drive here exchange their licences on or before the 15th September. We want this message to reach as many UK licence holders as possible, so please spread the word and refer to our Facebook page and the Living in Spain Guide on gov.uk for more information.”

UK licence holders who moved to Spain before 16th March 2023 and fail to make the exchange by 15th September will no longer be able to drive on their UK licence. If they wish to continue driving in Spain, they will need to go through the licence exchange process.

The process for completing the exchange is run by Spain’s Dirección General de Trá co (see their website for more information.)

Rental increases see US CPI in ation climb for the rst time in 13 months.

The return to increasing in ation in the US was primarily seen as a technicality yesterday, as in ation peaked in June last year, and its acceleration began to slow in July.

That being said, the data shows the cost of services in the US is still rising, including rent, car repairs and insurance, and haircuts. However, there was also a signi cant decline in the prices of some goods, thanks in large part to the resolution of pandemic-related supply chain issues.

The dollar dipped slightly in the immediate aftermath and some analysts were quick to predict an immediate end to the Fed’s hiking cycle.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

UK GDP grows 0.2% – as expected.

GDP growth data con rmed that the UK economy grew the expected 0.2% on the second quarter of this year, keeping the UK out of arms reach of a recession.

The results are indicative of sluggish growth, low productivity, and the continuing impact of the cost-of-living crisis on businesses and individuals. However, while the cumulative 0.75bps worth of hikes over the last quarter will have done little to improve GDP or the national mood, in ationary pressures are easing, and investors seem to share a collective hope that the UK will now avoid a recession altogether.

This could be down to how businesses are seen to be handling higher interest rates, demonstrating resilience in the current economic climate.

The Department of Culture of San Fulgencio presents the Summer Comedy Series

The municipal swimming pool will host every Friday the performances of four comedians, from August 11 to September 1

Last week, The mayor of San Fulgencio, José María Ballester, and the Councillor for Culture, Sara Nolasco, presented the I Cycle of Summer Comedy in the municipality. An activity that will take place every Friday from 10:30 pm, from next August 11 until September 1, on the grounds of the municipal pool. In this way “we will have the performances of four impressive comedians who will have a good time with their monologues to all attendees, and that, through laughter and humor, will make us more bearable the hot August nights,” said the councillor.

The I Cycle of Comedy of San Fulgencio will begin on Friday, August 11 with the performance of comedian and monologuist Marco Antonio, who is part of the Comedy Central factory and is host of the show ‘Alicante Comedy Club’. On August 18 will be the turn of Eden Serrano, screenwriter and stand-up comedian, with almost a decade dedicated to live comedy. For his part, on August 25 we will enjoy the performance of comedian Ismael Galletero, with a great career in the world of comedy, having participated in several

theatrical shows such as ‘Che apellidos valencianos’, ‘Aquellos maravillosos 90’ and ‘Murcianos

2’. The comedian Chely Capitán, a permanent member of ‘Las noches del Club de la Comedia’ and a regular contributor to radio programs on national radio stations, will put the nishing touch to this series of humor, the night of September 1.

The Councillor for Culture recalled that “the entrance to

all monologues is “completely free until is full, which has a large capacity being outdoors”. For his part, the mayor of San Fulgencio, José María Ballester, wanted to invite “all the people from San Fulgencio, and also to all those who visit us at this time, to participate and enjoy this new initiative, that we hope will become a regular thing and can be repeated in the coming years”.

Fake goods seized in Benidorm

In a major crackdown on intellectual property infringement, Spanish authorities have successfully dismantled a signi cant counterfeit goods operation, resulting in the arrest of twelve people and the con scation of 3,470 items of fake clothing and accessories. The operation was conducted by the Guardia Civil, which executed raids on several businesses in the popular tourist destinations of Benidorm and Moraira.

The raids, conducted in partnership with copyright experts, uncovered a web of illegal activity centred around the sale of counterfeit football shirts, along with other bogus-branded items. A total of three simultaneous inspections were carried out in Benidorm, targeting shops suspected of selling illicit merchandise. One particularly audacious operation involved a business that had ingeniously concealed a substantial portion of their

counterfeit stock within the walls of the establishment. These clandestine storage areas were camou aged with identical materials to the rest of the walls, rendering them almost indistinguishable to the untrained eye. Additionally, nine stalls on Moraira market were subjected to surprise visits by law enforcement o cers and experts in intellectual property and 1,698 items of counterfeit clothing and accessories were seized, all bearing the names of premium brands renowned for their high retail value. None of the stall holders were able to provide any evidence demonstrating the legitimacy of the goods. The seized items were found to be expertly crafted, emulating the design and appearance

of authentic articles. However, upon closer inspection, it became evident that the materials used fell far short of the quality standards set by the original brands.

The arrests send a clear message that the Spanish authorities are committed to safeguarding intellectual property rights and ensuring that businesses and consumers are protected from the scourge of counterfeit goods.

Valencia looks to decentralise emergency call centre

The Valencian government is working on the decentralisation of the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) but it still has no date or location. The Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, visited Alicante on Friday and announced that he is already working to have sub-o ces again in the provincial capital and in Castellón. The CICU “is going to return to Alicante in better condition”, he said, and ensured that they are modifying the regulatory framework of the decree that centralised the CICU in order to manage the relocation of the service in Alicante and Castellón in a more e cient and innovative way.

According to Radio Alicante a study of the personnel will also be carried out and twelve doctors, six nurses and fteen operators will be integrated in the Alicante capital. The minister asks for help from health institutions and unions to nd the best personnel and a rms that they will work in synergy with other CICUs to avoid competition problems.

Unions have welcomed the announcement made by the new regional government, which came out of the elections on 28th May, of the decentralisation of the CICU. They also o ered to collaborate with sta as much as possible because they believe it is the

emergency workers themselves who are ‘most aware of the needs of the service’.

Benjamín Lara, the person in charge of emergencies in the province from Comisiones Obreras, values the commitment of the Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, who visited Alicante and Almoraid on Friday and is already working on modifying the decree to decentralize the CICU and seeking a new location for its headquarters in Alicante.

Of course, although he did not o er speci c dates, Snr Lara considers that it is a very important step forward and he is satis ed with the increase in personnel promised by the minister.

He pointed out that the unions have

always defended having more doctors and, above all, nurses, which was never the case in the pervious service in Alicante.

Benjamin Lara added that the new coordination between the provincial CICUs, announced by the minister to avoid competition problems in events that occur in border areas, is important.

‘But what is really fundamental is that, with decentralisation, CICU resources can be managed better and more e ciently depending on the di erent emergencies’.

Orihuela removes graffiti from signs against gender violence

The Department of Equality has eliminated the gra ti sprayed on the signs that declare Orihuela as a municipality committed against gender violence. The councillor for the department Agustina Rodríguez, said that the acts of vandalism “demonstrate the lack of sensitivity of their authors with this scourge that a ects us all and against which we have to ght, such as gender violence”.

She was referring to the appearance of gra ti in which the expression “gender” had been crossed out with paint last week. In addition, she explained that the Local Police will routinely monitor the signs in order to detect any vandalism.

“The City Council will not

In Orihuela, in addition, these acts of vandalism that seek to make this social scourge, such as gender violence, invisible, will not succeed, “said Rodríguez, who recalled that “three women

Gang sold drugs from two houses in Torrevieja

The Guard Civil has dismantled two drug sales points established in two houses in the centre of Torrevieja, run by four members of the same gang. The operation culminated in the arrest of the four alleged perpetrators of the crimes of drug tra cking and membership of a criminal organisation. The Investigating Court No. 3 of Torrevieja has ordered the immediate entry into prison of all four detainees.

At the beginning of this year, thanks to the continuous investigative work carried out by the Civil Guard to combat drug tra cking, o cers from

Torrevieja became aware of the possible establishment of a criminal group dedicated to drug tra cking in the heart of the city, and so began Operation Nipol. After some initial inquiries, the o cers managed to locate two possible retail drug sales points from two houses that were in close proximity to each other.

Once the alleged perpetrators had been identi ed and su cient information had been collected, with the collaboration of the Torrevieja Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) and the Canine unit for drug detection, raids were carried out. Two simultaneous searches

were carried out at the Torrevieja homes. The four people arrested are all men, between the ages of 30 and 46 years and born in Morocco, residents of the town, and who have a history of similar crimes.

O cers seized 300 acorns of hashish, 7 and a half tablets of pressed hashish, weighing 750 grams, in addition to cash.

The detainees, who are charged with the crimes of drug tra cking and belonging to a criminal group, were placed at the disposal of the Investigating Court No. 3 of Torrevieja, which ordered their admission to prison.

The Orihuela City Council has presented its objections to the installation of a photovoltaic plant in the Orihuela district of Torremendo, on the edges of urban land. The Department of Rural Development, directed by Víctor Valverde, has coordinated the presentation of the document that has been signed by the Mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara and sent to the Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Commerce and Tourism recently.

On 12th July, the O cial Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana published the announcement for the phot6ovoltaic power plant and its infrastructure with power to install 9,990 kW, located in the municipality of Orihuela, subject to ordinary environmental impact assessment.

Valverde explained that this plant is adjacent to various homes and buildings located on the Hurchillo road, such as the Molino neighbourhood, the Virgen neighbourhood and even the cemetery.

“In addition, it is highlighted that it is seriously a ecting the possibilities of expanding

urban land in the district and its essential elements,” said the councillor, who recalled that Torremendo’s future expansion due to the Reservoir is already quite limited.

The presented project does

not take into account that among the a ected plots there are currently three semiconsolidated PERIs, together with the serious damage to the landscape that the installation will cause in the municipality.

Clampdown on cabin bag fees

The Spanish Ministry of Consumer A airs has initiated disciplinary proceedings against a group of low-cost airlines, accusing them of imposing unjusti ed fees on passengers for carrying hand luggage aboard ights.

Under the supervision of the General Directorate of Consumer A airs, this investigation goes beyond looking into the supplementary charges for cabin baggage. It delves into a range of additional fees levied on services that were historically included within the ticket fare. Such services include options like pre-reserving seats for minors or individuals requiring assistance.

These budget airlines have adopted a concerted practice of ‘unbundling’ services that were once part of the standard ticket price. Subsequently, passengers are now subjected to an additional fee for choosing these services, enabling low-cost carriers to present seemingly competitive ticket prices.

This shrewd manoeuvre has not only positioned these airlines favourably in terms of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) rankings but also gives advantage over rivals who uphold an all-inclusive pricing model.

Unfortunately for the consumer, the initial advertised prices di er hugely from

the ultimate cost borne by passengers, owing to these tactics. These airlines have also reportedly refused to accept cash payments for supplementary services at airport facilities, which is a violation of established regulatory mandates.

These practices, which allegedly contravene Article 47 of the Consolidated Text of the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users, have led the Ministry of Consumer A airs to take proactive measures in addressing these perceived transgressions, as outlined in Article 52bis, Section 5.

The consequences for these alleged infringements vary in severity, ranging from signi cant to exceptionally grave. Airlines found guilty of serious violations could incur nes ranging

between €10,001 and €100,000, while those committing very serious violations may face penalties spanning from €100,001 to €1,000,000.

In cases where the pro ts generated through these unjust practices exceed prescribed thresholds, the penalties will increase. For serious violations, penalties could increase to between four and six times the illicit gains, while for very serious o enses, penalties might reach to six to eight times the illicit gains.

In light of these developments, passengers are advised to check an airline’s baggage policy before booking ights, so they understand exactly what the allowable dimensions and weight of cabin luggage are on board.

No summer school for local children

The children of Orihuela Costa have been left without a municipal summer school. After a prolonged and contentious struggle, the anticipated Orihuela summer school program has been postponed until next year, leaving families in a state of disappointment. The delay has triggered a war of words between the Popular Party (PP) and the Socialist Party, each accusing the other of mismanagement, ultimately resulting in an unfavourable outcome for families.

The saga began in June when the then Mayor of Education, María García, unveiled plans for the 2023 summer school tender. Following a lengthy administrative process, on 18th July, the contract was awarded to private individual Paloma Ferrer Muñoz, with a total value of €96,850.

The o cial document outlined the scope of the “service provision of the summer school 2023,” stipulating a one-year contract duration. A total of 650 slots were to be made available, with a per-child fee of €149.

However, the story didn’t end with the award announcement.

A fteen-day period was

subsequently opened for objections and appeals. Yet, even after this period, enrolment of children into the program would still require at least an additional week.

Facing this logistical challenge, the Consistory announced plans to meet with the winning company to discuss the next steps. However, o cials expressed scepticism about the feasibility of opening a school for such a short duration, especially considering that registration in August typically amounts to a mere ten percent of capacity, translating to just twenty or thirty students.

The Socialist Party has laid blame on the PP, alleging that insu cient preparations were made during their tenure. According to sources within the Socialist Party, in January 2023, during their time in the Education Department, e orts were initiated to launch a long-term tender spanning four years. However, by March, complications had arisen, leading to delays due to bureaucratic requirements and potential time constraints.

Former Education Councillor María García expressed her

frustration, stating, “We opted for a solution that would at least ensure the service this year. It’s regrettable that the new PP government failed to take necessary actions to kickstart the school in August.” She accused the current administration of evading responsibility and criticized their approach to governance.

In response, Vicente Pina, the current Councillor for Education, placed the blame on the previous government’s legacy.

He stressed that the timeline of any initiative is dictated by its starting point, emphasising that the delays in initiation led to corresponding delays in completion.

Pina outlined future plans, indicating that they are already working on a fresh contract proposal that spans the next four years, aimed at providing families with a sense of stability and assurance for upcoming summers.

While the blame game continues, families in Orihuela are left with dashed hopes for this year’s summer school, eagerly awaiting a more promising solution for future opportunities.

Landscaping and development work on the new Siesta Park is progressing well

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, along with the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Concha, have visited the landscaping and management of the new Park of La Siesta, which are at a very good pace, so they can be fully completed before the deadline, since the company URDECON has pledged that in half the time established in the contract may be completed this great park. The works of this municipal park (located between the streets Henri Matisse, Ravel and Guridi) began at the end of January 2023 and will become one of the most important and complete of the city of Torrevieja, as it has a total area of 44,000 square meters, with an investment of 4.2 million euros, and will generate a large multisport area for the enjoyment of citizens. It should be noted that this large municipal park will be perimeter fenced. Eduardo Dolón has expressed his satisfaction with the high level of execution of these works, which began six months ago.

A park much demanded by the residents of La Siesta and San Luis, which will bring together a large number of sports courts, as well as green and landscaped areas, and a large Pump Track, which is already nished, for skateboards and BMX bikes, very popular with young people. A Pump Track that has three distinct areas: Pump Track Advanced, Pump Track Medium Level and Pump Track Children.

In addition, the park features a redistribution of spaces both for sporting activities and for the enjoyment of walks for people and families who want to spend the

day in nature, with several picnic areas for relaxation and rest, as well as a small amphitheatre with steps for various performances.

La Siesta Park has an Agility for large dogs and another for small dogs, a large central area that divides the park with two circular squares, skating circuits, playgrounds, bio-healthy areas, skating rink, hockey rink, football, basketball and indoor football, petanque courts, calisthenics area, bike path and three paddle tennis courts, so this park will become the rst in Torrevieja that will have courts to enjoy this sport so fashionable.

Have you lost contact with £9,500?

With the number of lost pots on the rise, now is the time to pay your forgotten pension pot some attention.

My personal nancial admin is often a Sunday task that is almost always deferred for other mundane tasks, such as laundry or bathroom cleaning, and I work in nance.

This nancial procrastination, or unawareness, is evidenced by the new lost pots gures published by Pensions Policy Institute.

The value of lost pension pots now stands at £26.6bn. What’s even worse is the increase in the number of lost pots, which is nearly 75% higher than in 2018.

• Who are losing their pots? Primarily

those under 55, which accounts for 65% of the total number of pots lost, but over half a million are still lost in the crucial pre-retirement period of 55-65.

• Why are pots being lost? Contact is typically lost because people move home and do not tell their provider they’ve moved. People have moved jobs and home more frequently since 2018, which has predominantly led to this increase. Recent research found that only 4% of people instinctively think to contact their pension provider about a change in address; in comparison 66% tell their bank.

• How much are they losing contact with? You would assume that a lost pot would be a smaller one, because surely

any materially-sized pot would have been, if not cherished, at least tracked by their owner. But these pots are not insubstantial. The average size pot which is lost amongst the 55–75-year-old range, is £16,004. The average across all ages, is £9,474.

If you worked in the UK and now reside here in Spain, there is every possibility that your money is waiting for you to make a claim.

I urge you to think about your past jobs and contact us to see if your retirement could be made that much more comfortable.

The Orihuela City Council requests the CHS to clean the riverbed, boulevards and ravines

Peter, the musical comes to Torrevieja

The Orihuela City Council has requested that the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) clean up the reeds, mud and vegetation found in the river bed and in the boulevards and ravines. of the municipal term. The situation in which the banks are found would hinder the ow of the waters in the event that a large ood occurs on these dates in which the weather has shown, over the years, that heavy rainfall can occur with risk cold drop.

The Councilor for the Environment, Noelia Grao,

explained that as a result of this, “a problem of mosquito proliferation is being created that is highly detrimental to the health of residents who have their homes next to the riverbed.” Grao considers that the local administration carries out, within the distribution of powers in terms of waste and urban channels, the tasks of maintenance and cleaning of the river in terms of oating elements that run through the urban nucleus of the city, “at great cost to the co ers municipal, but the competences

in the matter on which the request is made correspond to that body”.

Regarding the channels of boulevards and ravines in the municipality of Orihuela, the Councilor for the Environment considers that their cleaning is urgent, which should be done as soon as possible to avoid damage and that “the neighbors can be calm.” She ends by stating that the Orihuela City Council is willing, within its possibilities, to collaborate with that body in carrying out the actions that are necessary to prevent ood risks.

Peter, the Musical lands in the Municipal Theatre of Torrevieja on 14 and 15 October, in 4 unique sessions. Premiered in 6 countries and with more than 5,000 performances on stages such as the Garrick Thearte in London, this is a super-production of Theatre Properties and Eventix Group and has been applauded by more than 5 million spectators.

San Isidro men arrested for smuggling

The Civil Guard and the National Police, within the framework of the operation “Semi-trailer 23”, have arrested two residents of the municipalities of San Isidro (Alicante) and Torre Pacheco (Murcia), for an alleged crime of smuggling.

The joint action began after the investigation point of both Corps converged in the Zafra industrial estate, in Badajoz, where ships that drug tra ckers usually use to transport drugs were supposedly hiding.

In view of this, a discreet service device was established in the area, where this past Monday, August 7, the presence of two people was detected

on board the tractor unit of a truck, who after hooking up a semi-trailer began the march along the N- highway. 432 in the direction of Córdoba.

Devices established in communication routes were intercepted as they passed through the Badajoz municipality of Ahillones.

After the identi cation of its two occupants, residents of San Isidro (Alicante) and Torre Pacheco (Murcia), the interior of the semi-trailer was inspected, where the agents found a “narcolancha” semirigid boat of approximately 12 meters in length, of which they usually used by drug tra ckers

to transport the drug. This class of vessels is included as a prohibited genre for the purposes of the Organic Law on Contraband Suppression.

At the request by the agents of the transport documentation, these people do not present or justify it at any time, refusing to reveal the identity of the supposed owner and person in charge.

With the incriminating evidence and seized material, they were arrested and proceedings were taken as alleged perpetrators of a crime of smuggling, which are made available to the Investigating Courts of Llerena.

Rainwater drainage network installed in Lago Jardin to eliminate flooding issues

Aguas del Arco Mediterráneo S.A. (AGAMED), the mixed company for the management of the integral water cycle services, has executed within the 2023 Investment Plan, the rainwater evacuation network in Avenida San Miguel and Calle Ercina, in the Lago Jardín Urbanisation, with an investment amounting to 172,220 euros (VAT included).

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the councillor for Urban Services, Sandra Sanchez, the manager of AGAMED, Jorge Ballesta, and the deputy manager, Gemma Cruz, has visited the state in which the execution of this network

of evacuation of rainwater has been once the works have been completed.

It should be noted that the drainage system in Lago Jardín was generally made up of old networks with small diameters, which had become obsolete over time and therefore needed to be extended. For all these reasons, a network has been installed that collects rainwater from Avenida San Miguel and carries it to Calle Ercina, thus eliminating ooding problems and improving the current drainage system.

Avenida San Miguel receives water from upstream of the CV-

95. This area, as it did not have su cient rainwater networks, was ooding, causing problems for the residents who live there.

It was therefore necessary to build this rainwater network, which captures the water from upstream and transports it to its discharge point, guaranteeing adequate transport of ows and eliminating existing de ciencies.

For its execution, 105 metres of 400mm PVC PN6 DN pipes and 115 metres of 500mm PVC PN6 DN pipes have been installed, in addition to having re-asphalted a total of 1,641 linear metres once the work was completed.

The energy crisis in Europe reached record levels in the price of electricity in 2022, which, combined with governmental incentives and subsidies, has facilitated a clear path towards energy transition. This new ‘go solar’ pattern is extended through Spain at a national level.

Spain’s huge solar power potential

With an average of 2,500 hours of sunshine per year and 9.7 million roofs available, Spain is one of the countries with the highest potential for residential solar energy. The reason

Since solar panels became commercially available in the 1980s, the price has fallen by 99%. Technological breakthroughs have transformed solar energy into one of the most e cient and a ordable in the renewable sector.

Experts from the Institute for

Climate Energy and Disaster Solutions have a rmed that “Solar is going to completely dominate energy supply in the future,”. “If you look at the new electricity capacity that is being installed around the world, the largest single component is solar.”

Now is the perfect time to bene t from residential solar power. In addition to saving up to 70% on the electricity bill, solar energy o ers independence from electricity price uctuations and increases the value of the houses. Not to forget, its contribution to mitigating climate change.

Rojales Town Council earmarks

150,000

euros for citizen participation

Councillor Tatiana de Gea calls on residents to present their proposals

The councillor for the Environment, Health, the Elderly and Citizen Participation, Tatiana de Gea, has announced a new edition of the Participatory Budgets with a budget of 150,000 euros. This collaborative process allows citizens to decide the spending priorities of a part of the municipal budgets that establishes the process of citizen participation in the management of the council. “It is a working system in which our neighbours contribute to deciding the destination of part of the council’s economic resources,” says the councillor.

The initiative is open to all adults registered in the municipality as well as to local associations. The deadline for submitting suggestions will begin on Tuesday 8th and will end in a month’s time, on 8th September. The proposals must be presented at the general registry of the town hall. At the end of this rst phase, each citizen will establish a score for each of the proposals received. She explains that the main objective of this project is to in uence participatory

democracy by creating a line of work whose fundamental pillars are: democracy, transparency, participation and citizen involvement.

Councillor Tatiana de Gea calls

on all the inhabitants of Rojales to participate in this initiative, “unthinkable a few years ago” and which brings the local administration even closer to its citizens.

I wasn’t sure at first, but now I see that my mum is doing everything she can to get me to break up with my boyfriend. It was my 21st two weeks ago and mum and dad gave me two tickets to Paris. However, the tickets were in the name of me and my sister. She will do things like organising family meals, but exclude my boyfriend; the last BBQ we had she said it was family only; this included practically the whole of our extended family, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and their partners. I brought my boyfriend

along without telling her. She flew at me, saying it was family only; I simply said that ‘I assumed she regarded my boyfriend as family didn’t she?’. She stormed off and didn’t talk to me for days. Goodness knows what she will do when she finds out we are getting engaged. How do I proceed? You tell me that you have cancelled the holiday to France. Your Dad doesn’t appear to object to your relationship, but keeps his mouth shut for a quiet life. Your longer email tells me that your mum has made life very unhappy for the whole

family for years. You are an adult and you can make your own decisions. You now need to tell your parents that you and your boyfriend are serious and planning a future together, and your mum must accept the situation; sit both parents down for this announcement. Stand your ground and be strong, but remain calm. You will presumably be moving out soon, which will help you. If your mum gets angry - get up and leave, saying you will talk again when she is calm. Your mum is playing a dangerous game by alienating your future partner; in doing so she risks alienating her daughter too.

“What is the Paste Bu er?“

TThe Paste Bu er or clipboard is a bu er for short-term storage and transfer within and between application programs. The clipboard is temporary and unnamed, and its contents reside in the computer or mobile device’s RAM. Remember the Paste Bu er is stored in RAM (Random Access Memory) which is volatile. i.e., when the device is powered o the data is lost.

The cut command removes the selected data from its original position, while the copy command creates a duplicate; in both cases, the selected data is kept in temporary storage (the clipboard or Paste Bu er). The data from the clipboard is later inserted wherever a paste command is issued.

If you use Copy to copy the text, you can then Paste it to another location. When you Paste you take a copy of the Paste Bu er and paste it to a new location. On a mobile phone or tablet. Highlight the text you want to copy.

Select Copy (that text is now in the Paste Bu er). Move to where you want the copied text. Press and hold on to a free space. Select Paste. That text is now in the new location.

Computer Highlight the text you want to copy.

Right-mouse click and select Copy or use the Ctrl and C keys simultaneously. Move to the new location. Select where you want the text to go.

Right-mouse click and select Paste or use Ctrl and V keys simultaneously. In either case (Mobile device or computer) the contents of the Paste Bu er remain until you copy something else to it or until you switch o the device. You can paste the contents of the Paste Bu er to as many places as you want..

“What is streaming?”

Streaming is a method of transmitting or receiving data (especially video and audio material) over a computer network as a steady, continuous ow, allowing playback to start while the rest of the data is still being received. Internet access is required for the entire length of the stream. The content is not downloaded to the device you use to access the stream.

Terra Natura Benidorm warns of the conservation threat to the Asian elephant on World Elephant Day

The park will organise talks, educational games and workshops to raise awareness of the pressure on elephant populations.

The Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park has warned of the conservation risk that the Asian elephant is currently su ering. The warning coincides with the upcoming celebration of World Elephant Day, which will take place on August 12th. To raise awareness of the real threat to the survival of these animals, the park will be organising talks, exhibitions, educational games and workshops related to this species until 18 August.

The Education department of Terra Natura Benidorm will set up an information stand in the area set in Asia so that visitors can ask any questions about these animals to the park’s

educators and learn about the work that is carried out daily in this area to conserve them. A temporary exhibition will also be set up with biological materials and infographics on the anatomy, threats, behaviour and other curiosities about elephants.

For the youngest children, educational and thematic games will be organised. Children will be able to have fun with the ‘True and False’ game, the ‘Find the Di erences’ game or with a panel of cards to learn to di erentiate the di erent species of elephants.

There will also be a clay workshop, in which participants will be able to make a gure in the shape of an Asian or African elephant. An environmental educator will guide them in making the gure according to the characteristics of each species.

These actions will be complemented with an educational talk as part of the Zooexperience initiative, and with an environmental enrichment activity, where the public will be able to observe how the Asian elephants that live in the park feed themselves, which will take place at the elephant pond viewpoint.

Conservation of the species

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers elephants to be endangered. The species is listed in Appendix I of CITES. Elephant populations are under high pressure, especially Asian elephants. In fact, it is estimated that there are only 40,000 Asian elephants in the wild compared to 400,000 African elephants living in the wild.

The main threats are the loss of habitat caused by humans, the fragmentation of their territories and the illegal ivory trade. One of the main objectives of Terra Natura Benidorm is to raise awareness of current biodiversity conservation problems in order to promote social awareness of them.

The team of veterinarians and carers at Terra Natura Benidorm look after the welfare of the Asian elephants that live in its facilities through hygienic-health care, the preparation of diets according to each annual season, the study of their behaviour, the implementation of environmental enrichment strategies and the design of facilities to promote their maximum welfare.

James Martin’s ‘new TV series will still be broadcast by ITV,’ according to a new report, despite allegations of bullying.

The TV chef, 51, swore 42 times as he launched a foul-mouthed rant at his TV crew in 2018 shortly after his shock cancer diagnosis, with an extraordinary recording of the moment recently being leaked.

Last week, The Daily Mail exclusively revealed he could face being axed by ITV after senior bosses were left furious at his behaviour.

It has now been claimed that his show, James Martin’s Spanish

Adventure, will still air this autumn.

The Sun reports that ‘ lm crew were reduced to tears’ during the series’ production, however its broadcast will go ahead.

Mark Wright gives his followers an update on his huge garden and almost complete swimming pool at his and wife Michelle Keegan’s £3.5m Essex mansion

Mark Wright gave his followers an update on his £3.5m Essex mansion on Friday by revealing his huge garden and almost complete swimming pool.

The mansion, which Mark, 36, shares with his wife Michelle Keegan, 36, has undergone a huge amount of work over the last year as they built their dream home from scratch.

The former TOWIE star took to his Instagram stories on his home account to show o the progress.

Whilst he lmed the garden work being done, Mark explained to his fans the recent bad weather put a pause on the pool being completed.

He explained: ‘Cause of the constant rain, the grass is doing exceptionally well, but it means the pool had to come to a halt because we couldn’t obviously tile - they wouldn’t stick while it was full up on water. There was like two inches of water. we have drained it all out today.’

AGAMED introduces new customer services program

This initiative is adapted to the needs of di erent types of customers, with special attention to people in vulnerable situations.

It identi es digital, comprehension, accessibility and economic barriers and o ers solutions.

Aguas del Arco Mediterráneo (AGAMED) is highlighting the value of multi-channel customer service at its Torrevieja o ces. An initiative that, under the name ‘CONTIGO’, aims to make it easier for customers to carry out all procedures through an inclusive, agile and professional service through any of the available channels. This action, which combines personalised service with digital transformation, has been implemented in AGAMED’s o ces since the beginning of 2023. The aim of the ‘CONTIGO’ programme is to identify and provide solutions to digital, comprehension, accessibility and economic barriers.

It adapts to the needs of di erent types of clients, with special attention to people in a situation of economic vulnerability, and makes social assistance available to those who may require it. In this sense, they make them known so that they can apply for them in a simple and agile way.

To this end, it works hand in hand with di erent local social organisations, such as the Red Cross, Caritas, COCEMFE and ONCE.

Gemma Cruz, deputy manager of AGAMED, highlights the relevance of the ‘CONTIGO’ programme: “Having an initiative that encompasses all customer service channels allows us to be closer to citizens, providing them with the necessary tools and agility for the procedures to be carried out, without renouncing the same close attention as always”.

The solution to barriers

For comprehension barriers, it has di erent languages

to attend to its customers, guaranteeing the inclusion of migrants who do not master the language or the high demand of tourists with second homes. At the same time, for barriers linked to hearing disabilities, AGAMED has a sign language service in o ces or by video call.

Likewise, in the face of barriers linked to digitalisation, it facilitates procedures by appointment in o ces, by telephone; the ability to carry out procedures on behalf of other people; and the sending and receipt of paper documentation. In addition to the telephone service, AGAMED provides a WhatsApp chat.

elve oli e offi ers ta e u their posts in order to improve security in Rojales

Last Tuesday saw the swearing in of the twelve new members of the Rojales local police force. Eight new interim agents, three new o cers and a new inspector were sworn in at the Town Hall.

The Mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez and the Councillor for Security and Personnel, Antonio Javier López, consider the work carried out by the local police force as “vital and fundamental” for the proper functioning of the municipality. And they point out that the local police will continue to be provided with the material and human resources necessary to carry out their indispensable function in the most appropriate and safe way, without forgetting their continuous training. These new positions will allow a considerable improvement in the organisation of the force and public service.

The municipal o cials had words of thanks to the police sta for the public service they provide on a daily basis, thanks to the e ort, interest and professionalism they show.

Antonio Pérez pointed out that our local police o cers are the rst to arrive when an emergency situation arises, whatever type of emergency it may be, and without knowing exactly what they are going to nd. For this reason, he added that the training of our police o cers is essential in order to carry out their work.

In this sense, the mayor stressed that “they must know

everything to be able to deal with any situation”, from knowledge of rst aid and psychology, to law, including those related to social work.

At the same time, the councillor for Security added that, as our neighbours demand, “the o cers must be there when they are needed, as I have been able to see in the short time I have been responsible for security”.

Staying cool in summer: Top tips for how to cool in hot weather

1. Be sun smart

It’s best to avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day, but sometimes that can’t be avoided. When out in direct sunlight, wear (and regularly reapply) sunscreen, and cover your head with a hat. Remember to take regular breaks indoors or in a shady area to avoid getting heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Wearing light-colored, loosetting clothing will also help you to stay cool.

2. Wetter is better

Heat escapes through the skin, which is the largest organ in the body. So, the more skin you can cool down, the better.

Drenching a t-shirt and keeping it wet can be very e ective. If you’d rather not walk around in wet clothing, you can buy cooling spray, or having a cool shower will work just as well. You can quickly cool yourself down by putting your hands and feet in cold water. Wrists and ankles have lots of pulse points where blood vessels are close to the skin, so you will cool down more quickly.

3. Drink plenty of water

In hot weather, it’s important to avoid ca eine and make sure you’re drinking lots of water. If possible, drink isotonic sports drinks to replenish the lost salts, sugars, and uids Both cool and

hot drinks will work to keep your core temperature at the same temperature, so consuming hot drinks will not cool you down more e ectively than cold drinks. In the heat, you should avoid drinks containing ca eine, including tea and co ee. It’s typically best to stick to water.

4. Limit your alcohol The sun is high, and so are many people’s spirits. And that can lead us to the pub.

Unfortunately, mixing too much sun with a few too many drinks is not a good combination. Alcohol causes dehydration, which can hit especially hard if your body is already struggling to stay cool in the summer. Drinking alcohol can also make it harder to get a

good night’s sleep, something that’s already di cult in warmer temperatures.

5. Eat light meals to feel cooler

When it’s hot, you are far better o sticking to light, wellbalanced, regular meals. Food with a high water content like strawberries, cucumber, celery, and lettuce, will also help to keep you hydrated and cool in summer weather.

You can also try foods with high uid content like soups and stews that contribute towards hydration levels.

6. Limit physical activity to cooler parts of the day

It’s important not to disrupt your routine too much because of hot weather, but sometimes you may have to. An early morning run may feel punishing when you’re nice and sleepy in bed, but it could be dangerous to exercise in the blazing midday sun and risk dehydration, heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

7. Know the risks

The heat can have a serious e ect on your physical health, and especially during a heatwave, it’s important to look out for signs of heatstroke and heat exhaustion. Many people believe that heat exhaustion and heatstroke are the same things, but heatstroke is potentially far more serious.

Thirteen motorbikes have become part of the orrevie a fleet

The Local Police will have 8 motorbikes equipped with police equipment, and 5 motorbikes will be destined for various departments

The councilman of Local Police, Federico Alarcón, along with the Quartermaster, Alejandro Morer, Local Police O cer, Juan Antonio Valero, and accompanied by the councilors of Sports and Parks and Gardens, Concha Sala and Diana Box, have been presented at the premises of the Local Police of Torrevieja, the 13 motorbikes that have been

purchased by the City of Torrevieja to serve the various departments.

The investment was 99,087.23 euros, with a 1.218% reduction on the part of the company awarded the contract. The contract was awarded in January of this year and consists of the following vehicles: six Yamaha XMAX 300cc scooters, equipped with police equipment; two Yamaha Tracer 700cc trail motorbikes, equipped with police equipment; and ve Yamaha D’elight 125cc scooters for the sports, parks and gardens and

notifying departments. Of the latter ve, two are destined for the parks and gardens area, two for the noti ers and one for the sports department. Federico Alarcón expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition of these new vehicles “for the area of

Sports, Parks and Gardens, it means providing them with a means that they did not have, while, for the noti ers, it is a renewal of the existing means that needed to be changed.

As for the Local Police, we are once again recovering a service that was

not available and which now has the means to start up again. All of this for the bene t of the citizens”. In this sense, Alarcón has indicated that, in the next two weeks, these new motorbikes attached to the police department will be operational.

The importance of scrapping your vehicle legally

Having worked in the scrap business on the Costa Blanca for over a decade, the team at Bradley Breakers could tell us all a horror story or two about people who thought they had scrapped their old car only to nd that the car was still registered, and even in some instanes driving around accumulating nes, many months later.

There are car owners on the Costa Blanca who have faced large nes after the vehicle they thought they’d dealt with was still driving around. Unfortunately, as long as your name remains on the document of ownership you are legally responsible for that vehicle.

Here in Spain the system of scrapping a vehicle is much di erent from anything you are likely to be used to Ireland or the UK. If you also have the added complication of a language barrier it is even more imperative that, when considering disposing of a vehicle, you use a company in which you have complete trust.

One such company is Bradley Breakers. They are experts in the eld and they can make the whole process simple and uncomplicated. Simply make the call, they will make you a cash o er for your vehicle and if accepted they will collect the

vehicle on a tow truck from your home ensuring the minimum of disruption and fuss for you.

They will then leave you with the necessary legal documentation, indicating that they have taken ownership of your old vehicle and then, once the vehicle has been o cially ‘scrapped’, you will be issued with the o cial DGT Certi cate (Baja).

Do be aware that, if this is something that you are currently considering, you need to ensure that your vehicle is scrapped by 31 December to avoid any further SUMA bills.

Bradley Breakers said, “We can’t overemphasise the importance of doing the ‘baja’ of a vehicle properly in Spain. It saves so much hassle and heartache further along the line doing it in the correct way with a trustworthy company.”

Bradley Breakers, which employs over 40 people, now have an impressive new scrapyard consisting of a 20,000 square metre site on which they house a 3,000 sqm warehouse in which they store thousands of used parts which they have removed from cars. All parts are recorded on a computer stock system and stacked on racking within the warehouse. You can even buy parts online. So, if you are looking for a component for your car, before you buy new, you could save time and money by going directly to Bradley Breakers.

Contact Bradley Breakers Central in English on (0034) 607 848 332 or drop an e-mail to bradleybreakerscatral1@outlook. com. Facebook Bradley Karl Thompson. The new location is Poligono 18, C/Novelda 2B, Crevillente 03330.

Imanyo Golf Society Plane Parking Trophy at La Finca

First of all, we would like to thank Plane Parking for sponsoring our golf day for the last 9 years. Plane Parking are a large company in the region who take care of your vehicles whilst you are out of the country and have secure parking at Alicante and the new Corvera Murcia airport.

We started with a full English breakfast in Imanyo’s and the format for the day was singles full handicap Stableford played in two groups.

On arriving at La Finca, we received a friendly and organised greeting from Salva and his sta . The course was in fantastic condition considering we haven’t had rain since May and the weather was a very hot 40 degrees!

This was one of the closest competitions we have had for a long time. The overall winner of the Plane Parking Trophy eventually came from group “A” winning with 39 points was John Bolt, runner up with 33 points was Steve Gain and third place went to Lee George with 32 points. Winner from group B was Steve Hopkins

with 38 points, runner up was Steve Mathers with 34 points and third place was “Fish Called Wanda” Mo Chaplin with 30 points. Winners of nearest the pins were group A hole

6 Michale O: Kee e, hole 11 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, hole 15 Steve Gain, group B hole 4 “Tricky” Rik Wood, hole

9 Steve Gain and hole 16 “Fish Called Wanda” Mo Chaplin, best front nine with 17 points was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness and best back nine went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 15 points, the two’s pot was not won so €15 carried over to our next game.

The singles knockout semi- nals winners were Sean McGuinness beating Peter Kelly 3 & 2 and Steve Gain beating John Fairbrass 6 & 5.

Thank you to Plane Parking Directors Nick and Marianne Baker for providing and presenting all the prizes, also thank you to Antonio and sta at Imanyo’s for the great hospitality.

The football card was won by Steve Mathers with Leeds winning €40 and

raising €40 for our charities 2023. Photo shows Plane Parking Director Nick Baker presenting the trophy to

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 8th of August we shed the rst round of the Autumn series at the El Bosquet complex at Crevillent.

Sixteen anglers attended and unusually it was decided to sh peg A1 to 16 and 26 to 30. The match was shed in very hot conditions but the weights were very good.

Winner on the day from peg 12 was Bob Robinson , Bob shed the pole with maggots or pellets and weighed a very respectable 42.76kg of decent size carp.

In second place was Russell Davidson who used similar tactics for 28.90kg from peg 30

In third place was the ever consistent, Willy Moons who from peg 11 had 28.14kg using the method feeder with chickpeas or corn.

The other section was won by our Belgium visitor Eric Denis with 19.72kg from peg 7.

Lots of changes are currently taking place at the complex with the widening of pegs 17 to 25 and the clubs would like to thank all that took part in the recent bank clearing to page a1 to 7.

Rods N Reels do not hold any matches during August so I have no o cial match report.
