Costa Blanca Drug Ring: Guardia

Civil arrest 35 in Operation Primoto

In a significant crackdown on organised crime, the Guardia Civil has dismantled a drug trafficking network operating across the Costa Blanca region of

Spain. Led by a prominent figure who flaunted a lavish lifestyle funded by illegal proceeds, the operation, dubbed “Primoto,” resulted in the arrest of 35

individuals.

The investigation, which started in late 2022, targeted a group peddling narcotics from residences and street corners in Torrevieja and in Murcia. Customers could conveniently request personal deliveries via phone calls, using instant messaging apps for communication.

To expand their clientele, the criminals employed marketing tactics such as a ‘Happy Hour’ promotion, offering discounted prices and bulk deals on drugs. Guaranteeing round-the-clock service, they frequently changed locations every three months to evade law enforcement detection.

The mastermind behind the operation, initially based in Torrevieja before relocating to a posh neighbourhood in Moncada, Valencia province, orchestrated the network’s expansion into Bigastro and Callosa de Segura. His flamboyant lifestyle, marked by extravagant purchases and boasts of wealth, drew attention from authorities.

One notable acquisition was a Ferrari sports car, purchased for €250,000 in cash, though later sold. The Guardia Civil began the first phase of the operation was carried out last October due to the suspicion that the gang planned to hire hitmen to

threaten one of their distributors who did not send them 14 kilos of cocaine that they had purchased. This action led to the apprehension of the primary suspects and the discovery of another criminal outfit in Beniel, Murcia.

In a subsequent raid conducted in February, authorities uncovered five indoor marijuana farms in Orihuela’s Arneva district, San Miguel de Salinas, and Beniel. The Arneva facility, located within a warehouse, featured specially adapted rooms for cultivating marijuana.

In this second phase another 17 people were arrested and eleven searches were carried out, where the investigators

had the support of Torrevieja’s Citizen Security Unit. Between the two phases, 35 people have been arrested - 26 men and 9 women - between 22 and 64 years old and of Spanish, Colombian, Venezuelan and Romanian nationalities.

Secrecy

Details of the Guardia Civil’s operations were initially subject to a court secrecy order in Torrevieja, which was lifted recently, allowing for public disclosure. Among the 35 arrested individuals, 24 were denied bail, including the leaders of both criminal enterprises. Operation Primoto was supervised by the Court of Instruction number 2 of Torrevieja and has included house searches in Torrevieja, Bigastro, Callosa de Segura, Orihuela, San Miguel de Salinas, Moncada (Valencia) and Beniel (Murcia). The arrests stand testament to law enforcement’s commitment to combatting organised crime and ensuring the safety of communities in the Costa Blanca region.

Food price in ation in Spain is settling down, with the rate of price rises having halved since 2022 – but remains well above the European Union average, according to the latest gures.

Only Malta, at 6.8%, Greece at 6.7% and Croatia at 5.6% are reporting higher in ation for groceries than Spain, whose 5.3% is the fourthhighest in the EU.

At present, the Eurozone average food price in ation sits at 2.6%, based upon numbers for February, the most recent full month.

Eurostat data for the Harmonised Consumer Prices Index (HCPI) reveal that Italy and France are also above average at rates of 3.9% and 3.5%, although Spain is one of just four countries that more than double the typical 2.6%. And Germany’s foodprice in ation has fallen to 2.1%.

But it’s not all negative: At the start of the global in ation crisis, Spain’s

consumer price index showed rises of above 10% in the cost of groceries; also, Spain took longer than many of the EU’s other large economies to register in ation rates of concern.

Spain has also avoided the dramatic uctuations seen elsewhere in the Eurozone, where absolute in ation in some countries rose to over 10% or even over 12%, compared with between 3% and 5% for Spain.

Whilst the sharpest Eurozone interest rate rise in history has brought in ation down dramatically in most large economies, Spain’s started to increase at around this time, meaning the e ects had apparently come later.

The country’s self-reliance in terms of gas supplies, with almost no dependency on Russian pipelines and its above-averagely high use of renewable energies – speci cally solar - have meant domestic fuel price in ation and its knock-on e ects have been less pronounced since the

con ict in Ukraine began.

Vegetarians and vegans have been sheltered from Spain’s food-price in ation the most: Greatest hikes are seen in meat and sh. Pork and ham show price in ation of 11%, the second-highest in the EU, whilst fresh sh registers 7.5%, the fth-highest level of in ation in the bloc.

But many other basic foodstu s have gone up in price at a higher rate than elsewhere in the EU, including milk, cheese, eggs, fruit, vegetables and juices.

In the past year, olive oil has rocketed in price by an astounding 67% in Spain – the greatest rise in the EU. Overall, olive oil has risen in price by an average of 50% across the bloc since February 2021, but Spain has seen hikes of 191% in that time, compared with the countries with the second- and third-highest increases – Greece (138.5%) and Portugal (135.3%).

cers reco nised for savin four lives

The Mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, led a tribute to two Local Police o cers whose swift actions recently saved the lives of four struggling bathers. Joined by Manuel Mestre, the Councillor for Beaches, and the Commissioner of the Local Police, Vegara expressed the city’s profound pride in its law enforcement, highlighting their unwavering commitment to ensuring community safety.

The Mayor said: “All Orihuela residents are very proud of the Local Police because they are always ready to act. They ensure

that we are able to live safely throughout the municipality. In this particular incident, the o cers acted in a situation that could have ended in tragedy, but fortunately, the bathers were rescued in time.”

The heroic o cers recounted the harrowing events, describing how they sprang into action upon witnessing two distressed girls struggling in the water, accompanied by two surfers attempting a rescue. Without hesitation, the o cers coordinated volunteers to form a

human chain, ultimately saving all four individuals.

In recognition of their valour, the Orihuela Town Hall has commended both o cers for their exceptional service during the crisis.

The o cers were on routine patrol when an emergency call alerted them to a drowning incident at Cala Bosque beach in La Zenia. Arriving at the scene, they found two surfers aiding the bathers, who had been struggling against the sea’s currents.

Despite the surfers’ valiant e orts, the o cers recognised the urgency of the situation and swiftly deployed a life buoy to aid in the rescue. With limited resources available, they rallied beachgoers to form a human chain, successfully rescuing the victims from danger and bringing them safely ashore.

One of the rescued individuals exhibited signs of distress, prompting emergency medical assistance to provide on-site treatment. Thanks to the quick thinking and decisive actions of the o cers, what could have been a tragedy was averted, underscoring the invaluable role of law enforcement in safeguarding community welfare.

Population boost for Benidorm

Benidorm is celebrating a historic milestone as it surpasses its previous population record, now boasting 74,588 residents according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This signi cant surge in population places the iconic coastal city on the cusp of a major milestone, edging closer to the coveted 75,000 mark that would elevate its status to that of a “big city” and potentially unlock increased government funding.

The INE report reveals a notable increase of 2,250 individuals registered on the municipal padron last year alone, marking an 820-person uptick from the city’s previous population zenith recorded 11 years ago. However, it’s worth noting that the actual population is likely higher, with a portion of residents, particularly foreigners, opting not to register or renew their registration on the padron.

The push to boost padron numbers isn’t uncommon among Spanish municipalities, with local councils actively pursuing strategies to bolster their populations in order to qualify for increased state aid. Perez emphasized that the nal tally may yet uctuate pending any potential challenges from the council, especially considering that local padron registrations often exceed INE gures.

“Benidorm is an engine for job creation and an improving economy, which is re ected in residency gures,” Perez asserted. “It is a slow but solid and sustained growth over time and that has made us go from just over 66,000 inhabitants to more than 74,500 in just over a few years.” As Benidorm continues its trajectory of expansion and development, the city’s burgeoning population stands as a testament to its enduring appeal and economic vitality.

Benidorm’s Mayor, Toni Perez, expressed pride in the city’s growing allure as both a residential destination and a hub for public services enhancement. He remarked, “These gures con rm there’s a growing interest not only in living in Benidorm, but also in registering in our city, something which allows us to improve public services.”

In a case dating back to 2019, the Prosecutor’s O ce in section 11 of Elche is set to request six years and two months in prison for each of three men accused of a string of robberies targeting 14 businesses in Orihuela. The robberies, occurring between October and November of that year, involved the forcible entry into cafes, bars, and fruit shops, where the perpetrators made o

In a shocking incident at an Elche hospital, a 37-year-old man allegedly slit his partner’s throat just moments after she gave birth and informed him she was ending their relationship. The victim, a 28-year-old woman, was swiftly transferred to Vinalopo Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with severe stab wounds, while her attacker was promptly apprehended by the Policia Nacional.

The distressing ordeal unfolded around 4:00 am last Thursday within the hospital’s postpartum unit, where the new mother was recuperating after childbirth. Medical personnel were alerted by screams emanating from the room, leading them to discover a scene of horror with blood spattered across the room.

The woman sustained multiple stab wounds, including a deep laceration to her throat, necessitating urgent medical intervention. Meanwhile, the man reportedly su ered up to 12

Amid the chaos, the assailant attempted to assault at least two members of the medical team with a knife before being subdued by hospital security personnel. Fortunately, the newborn baby remained unharmed, as he was not present during the violent

altercation.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the man ew into a rage upon learning of his partner’s desire to end their relationship, precipitating the horri c attack. Authorities in Elche have launched a comprehensive inquiry into the incident as they seek to unravel the circumstances surrounding the harrowing assault.

Particularly notable is the repetition of targeting the same fruit shop and candy store up to three times, with only a few days between each

incident. Alongside the three primary suspects, a fourth individual faces accusations of involvement in one of the assaults. For this, the Prosecutor’s O ce is seeking a 10-month prison sentence.

The trial underscores the serious nature of the crimes committed and the legal rami cations awaiting the accused.

Cruise ship passengers deported

Spain has completed the deportation of 65 Bolivian nationals who were discovered to possess fake visas upon their arrival in Barcelona aboard a cruise ship earlier this month, causing upheaval among fellow passengers.

Following scrutiny, only four out of the 69 Bolivian passengers aboard the MSC cruise ship, which docked in Barcelona on April 2, were permitted to remain in Spain. These individuals, identi ed as three siblings and the daughter of one of them, were granted permission due to their familial ties to Girona residents, one of whom holds Spanish nationality.

The remaining Bolivian passengers, however, were escorted by bus from the port last Thursday, where they had been detained since the MSC Armonia’s arrival, and subsequently own to Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s secondlargest city. The expenses for the repatriation ight were covered by MSC.

Carlos Prieto Gómez, the Spanish government’s delegate in Catalonia, con rmed the successful repatriation and expressed gratitude to the Bolivian ambassador, Nardi Suxo, and the Catalan security forces for their collaborative e orts.

The MSC cruise ship embarked from Brazil in mid-March with plans to traverse the Mediterranean enroute to its nal destination in Venice, Italy. However, upon docking in Barcelona, the entire

cohort of 1,500 passengers was barred from disembarking due to the discovery of fake visas among the Bolivian contingent.

The counterfeit documentation initially evaded detection by MSC, even post-boarding and sailing. It wasn’t until the documentation was scrutinized by Spanish authorities prior to the vessel’s arrival that concerns were raised.

After a delay, the cruise ship was eventually permitted to depart from the port last Wednesday with its remaining passengers, while the Bolivian nationals were con ned aboard an MSC ferry until their deportation was formalized.

Requests for asylum lodged by some members of the group were rebu ed by Spanish authorities.

Relatives of the deported Bolivians, present at the port upon the ship’s arrival, disclosed to reporters that their kin had fallen victim to a fraudulent scheme. They claimed that a travel agent had sold them tickets with the false promise of valid visas for residency and employment in Spain.

Progress over Gibraltar

In a pivotal meeting held in Brussels, Spain and the UK took strides towards bridging longstanding disputes concerning Gibraltar’s status post-Brexit, heralding what both nations termed as “signi cant progress” in talks aimed at facilitating the seamless circulation of goods and people between the contested territory and Spain.

The joint statement issued after the discussions underscored the constructive tone permeating the negotiations, noting that substantial headway had been made in delineating general political parameters, particularly concerning airport operations, trade, and mobility. Emphasizing the ongoing commitment to dialogue, both parties a rmed their intent to continue deliberations in the ensuing weeks to nalise the accord.

Bringing together key stakeholders, including British Foreign Minister David Cameron, his Spanish counterpart José Manuel Albares, European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic, and Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, the meeting epitomized a concerted e ort to resolve the intricate status of the British enclave in the wake of Brexit.

Picardo’s upbeat assessment, asserting that the parties were “within spitting distance” of a resolution, mirrored Albares’s determination to swiftly conclude negotiations, re ecting the shared urgency in reaching a de nitive agreement.

The backdrop of historical contention loomed large, with Gibraltar’s sovereignty long disputed between Spain and Britain since the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht. While

a provisional accord in 2020 laid the groundwork for post-Brexit arrangements, a nal consensus remained elusive.

Past proposals, including the 2022 initiative for a “shared prosperity zone,” aimed at fostering cooperation between Spain, the EU, and Britain, spotlighted the intricate geopolitical dynamics surrounding Gibraltar’s future. However, Spain’s insistence on retaining control over Gibraltar’s external frontiers underscored the enduring complexities impeding a comprehensive resolution.

Against the backdrop of the Northern Ireland protocol, which saw London and Brussels reaching an accord last year, Gibraltar stands as the nal British territory awaiting clarity on its future relationship with the EU, emblematic of the lingering uncertainties amidst Brexit’s aftershocks.

As the mercury climbed in Spain, heralding an unseasonably scorching start to the year, the country grappled with its inaugural wildfire of 2024.

Officials reported that the inferno, which ignited near Tárbena in the Valencia region’s Alicante province, ravaged more than 500 hectares of land near Spain’s renowned Costa Blanca, forcing more than 180 residents to flee their homes.

The blaze, sparked amid temperatures surpassing 30°C, gained momentum propelled by a trifecta of heat, wind, and parched air. Speculation arose that the blaze may have originated from an agricultural burn, although investigations are ongoing.

Even as the flames continued their relentless advance, incinerating swathes of countryside, firefighters endured a gruelling night battling the inferno. The region’s emergency services, in a dispatch reminiscent of the urgency permeating the crisis, confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that the blaze remained “active,” underscoring the arduous nature of the firefighting campaign.

Pilar Bernabé, the central government’s representative in Valencia, explained the sobering reality on public television, stating that approximately 180 individuals had been evacuated from the worst-affected zones. To bolster

containment efforts, eight air units swooped into action alongside ground forces, including troops from the UME military emergency unit, summoned to confront the escalating threat.

The catastrophe unfolded against a backdrop of soaring temperatures across Spain, with the AEMET national weather service recording mercury levels exceeding 30°C in more than 65 areas on Saturday alone. Such alarming climatic conditions extended even to regions as distant as the Pyrenees, Galicia, and Castilla y León, underscoring the pervasive impact of the heatwave gripping the nation.

La Vega Baja is left out of the Grand Prix

La Vega Baja is left out of the Grand Prix for this summer’s edition. And the options were not few, since up to three of the 27 municipalities in the region presented their candidacy to participate in this famous contest that returned last year and where the presence of Los Montesinos awakened the fever for the Grand Prix in the Vega Baja.

With the intention of repeating the promotion of Vega Baja in the Grand Prix, Benejúzar , Bigastro and Redován were preselected and sent their videos, one of the requirements in the first phases of the casting to opt to be one of the 14

towns that manage to enter to the television contest. In this video they had to present the main and most outstanding characteristics of the municipality with the help of the neighbors.

Finally, all three have been discarded and

Vega Baja will not have a presence this time in the public television contest. The only municipality selected in the Valencian Community is Ondara, in the province of Alicante. This year, a total of 490 aspiring locations from all over Spain had applied.

The municipality of Almoradí inaugurates a new outdoor space for the enjoyment of its neighbors, especially for the little ones. From the Department of Parks and Gardens, headed by councilor Carmen Berná, the renovations of the Plaza Ciudad de Elche have been carried out through a subsidy from the Provincial Council of Alicante for an amount of 242,677.92 euros.

The action, which is part of the 2023/2027 legislative program,

has consisted of the rehabilitation and renewal of street furniture; the replacement and reorganization of the children’s play space and the rehabilitation and renewal of the pavement.

From the Almoradí City Council, they have explained that one of the main objectives of the government team is “the improvement of all the squares and parks of the municipality, such as, in this case, the Ciudad de Elche square.”

GBP

The latest GDP growth data for the UK was released on Friday. It shows that the UK economy grew 0.1% in February and 0.3% in January (revised up from the 0.2% reported previously), which could indicate the UK economy is rebounding from its technical recession.

While the data aligned with forecasts, it’s worth noting that both the manufacturing and services industries reported growth that exceeded expectations. This positive performance has led some economists to speculate that the UK’s growth for the rst quarter of this year could surpass the 0.1% initially projected by the Bank of England.

The positive growth data could also give the Bank of England more exibility and time on its path towards rate cuts this year.

Following the volatility at the back end of last week, GBP/USD appears to have not yet found a resistance level and continues to fall. Markets might have expected a market re-correction when the pairing touched 1.25 but it has pushed through this barrier to 1.2432, which is the most favourable level for the pair’s pound buyers since November last year.

The majority of any further Sterling-based market movement will likely occur midweek as Andrew Bailey holds two talks: the rst on Tuesday evening, following the UK’s latest unemployment gures, and the second after the CPI release on Wednesday afternoon.

News reported that a panel of top economists have suggested that if the Fed delays interest rate cuts, that could have a knock-on e ect in the UK. If the Bank of England cuts rates before the Fed, there is a risk of its devaluing the pound, which could fuel further in ation.

The next UK interest rate decision is not until May and will likely keep markets hanging in

GBP / EUR UPDATE

anticipation over the next few weeks. Unless UK GDP takes a more signi cant turn for the worse, the signs seem to indicate that we are looking well into H2 before cuts begin.

EUR

Last Thursday, the European Central Bank maintained its rates for the fth consecutive meeting but appeared to hint at a potential rate cut in June. The ECB President, Christine Lagarde, stated, “It would be appropriate to reduce the current level of monetary policy restriction” if in ation continues to move toward its 2% target. She also nodded to the higher-than-expected CPI in ation data released in the US earlier in the week, saying, “We are not assuming that what happens in the euro area will be the mirror of what happens in the United States.” Her comments followed markets pushing back their forecasts for the rst Fed interest rate cut after CPI data showed consumer prices increased by 3.5% from the previous year, ahead of the 3.4% expected. There aren’t too many signi cant data releases this week in Europe, which won’t help support the single currency, which is currently at its lowest level this year. Its currency index has now dropped to 107 despite being at 110 earlier in the month.

The ECB is in a similar position to the Bank of England, and as such, it seems likely to keep GBP/ EUR in rangebound territory. The pairing saw a ¾ cent improvement from 1.1650 to a peak of 1.1725 on Friday, which marks the best time to buy euros since 10th March.

La Siesta padels court privatised

The Torrevieja City Council has greenlit the initiation of the concession process for managing and operating a kiosk and paddle tennis courts within the newly established La Siesta park.

This entails a comprehensive concession of public land enabling the use and enjoyment of the space occupied by the kiosk/bar (30 m²) and the area for tables and chairs (140 m²) for operating the kiosk/bar in La Siesta park. Additionally, it includes the space taken up by the three paddle tennis courts (618 m²) for managing and exploiting said courts. The annual fee set for the acquiring company for both facilities amounts to €13,000 per year, totaling

€68,500 for the ve-year concession period, with the possibility for bidders to enhance this reference price.

The technicians have not speci ed the rate for court users due to the absence of a tax ordinance for sports facilities in Torrevieja. However, they estimate that the concessionaire can generate a minimum of €8,677 per year for management. Nonetheless, the technical speci cations of the concession now incorporate the public price of the municipal ordinance for sports facilities.

The paddle tennis courts require vigilant management to ensure orderly use and proper maintenance, which

the City Council lacks the means to execute directly. Therefore, the Council seeks a dedicated individual or entity to oversee these tasks, ensuring the longevity of the facilities while also exploring revenue-generating opportunities.

In addition to sports amenities, a small catering service has been established to provide park users with a pleasant outdoor dining experience, complementing the park’s diverse o erings, including a climbing wall, playground, pumptrack, and various sports courts. These facilities will not be managed through concession to preserve their upkeep.

Body of missing young man found after 4 years in El Campello

The body of Félix Esquerdo, the young man who disappeared in the northern area of the municipality of El Campello in 2020, was found on the morning of Saturday, April 20, while an exhaustive search was being carried out in a location of 140 hectares of steep terrain.

The body has been discovered a few meters from the place where his motorcycle was found in Pueblo Acantilado thanks to a raid coordinated by the Solidarity Civil Guards collective , which has had the collaboration of the Adonay Platform, the Andalusian Sports Detection Federation (Fadd ), family and friends, re ghters , volunteers

with some experience in mountaineering and individuals who wanted to participate, to whom I was assigning various roles according to their abilities. The remains of the young man were inside a sleeping bag and the body showed signs of decomposition due to the four years that have passed since the incident, since his disappearance was reported on October 3, 2020, when he was 34 years old. In all these years, according to sources close to the case, an inspector from the Civil Guard had been in charge of carrying out this search, without any success.

The appearance of new evidence motivated the launch

of a search operation that had been scheduled for this weekend and would last from Saturday, April 20 to Sunday, April 21. This operation included the mobilization of police o cers, drones , metal detectors, dogs and mountaineering and climbing experts.

For its part, the El Campello City Council had joined in, giving up the space on the BMX track located next to the El Vincle Sports Center so that the teams could set up their camp there and spend the night, but the early discovery of the remains of Félix Esquerdo has meant that it has not been necessary to lift the command post.

Correos in Orihuela denounced for backlog of letters

More than 3,000 notifications and more than 1,000 accumulated letters are pending delivery in the municipality of Orihuela, due to the limited human resources that Correos has in the town, as reported by the CSIF union.

The CSIF has denounced the “serious situation in which the Orihuela Post Office delivery unit finds itself, in which only half of the staff is operational, thereby causing an obvious deterioration in the service provided daily to citizens. ”.

The union points out in a statement that “despite the effort and professionalism of the staff, there is a

deficient public postal service, since today it is impossible to handle the amount of work that arrives at this center, which leads to workers to feel helpless when they cannot provide quality service to their neighbors.” In fact, as of today there are notifications pending to be issued that exceed 3,000 and some 1,000 accumulated letters, many of them important, says the CSIF. But this work overload is also “seriously harming the health of workers, increasing the risk of injuries and work-related stress” and as a consequence, “unpaid sick leave is

For CSIF, the solution is to cover all these vacancies through the public employment pool. “Citizens deserve an efficient postal service and staff must be able to carry out decent and safe work. The Post Office, as a public servant, must respond to this serious situation,” concludes the union.

inistr ill assess e ce tions in agricultural burning

The Department of Justice and Interior has issued an informative note regarding the resolution of April 15 that modi es the period for burning crop margins or eliminating agricultural or forestry waste through the use of re. The resolution contemplates the possibility of authorizing burning for speci c reasons 500 meters away from forest land.

The decision of the Generalitat to prohibit in general and without nuances agricultural burning until October 15 given the special risk conditions of forest res that are a ecting the Valencian Community, agricultural organizations such as AVA-ASAJA and La Unió described as “ counterproductive”, because “leaving the pruning remains drying for six months is a tinderbox, the remedy can be worse than the disease by generating more res.” These organizations, without knowing the modi cation that occurred on the same day, asked the Valencian Government to consider introducing measures according to the agricultural realities of the various areas and the existing meteorological risks.

After the modi cation, the

Ministry will study exceptions in certain areas and periods . Furthermore, it states that the ban has been adopted in coordination with the Department of Agriculture.

He has also indicated that since the beginning of the legislature they have been working to nd alternatives to these burnings, “but there is no solution at the moment.” In any case, burning may be authorized exceptionally if it is justi ed that there is no risk to the forest mass and the Generalitat could revoke the order if the climatic conditions and the situation of the forest change.

At the moment, burning of crop margins or plant residues is exceptionally prohibited in those plots located on forest land, adjacent to or located in the Forest In uence Zone. Therefore, in plots located more than 500 meters away from forest lands, burning activity may continue under the same conditions that existed prior to the publication of the resolution.

In the cartographic viewer of the Institut Cartogrà c Valencià there is the layer “Forest In uence Zone (ZIF) 500 m” that

indicates the areas that are less than 500 meters from forest land and, therefore, on which forestry land has been prohibited. the burning

In the fth point of the Resolution, speci c exceptions to the application are established, always of an extraordinary nature.

The following situations and procedures are established to request these exceptions:

• Plots in which there are agricultural residues that must be eliminated for phytosanitary reasons through the use of re: The owners will send a request to the Plant Health Service of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, accompanied by a technical report prepared by a registered professional with skills in plant health and who justi es the need for burning and the impossibility of using alternative methods. Once the report has been validated by Plant Health, if applicable, the General Director of Forest Fire Prevention will issue a resolution favorable to burning.

• Plots in which woody crops have been uprooted prior to the publication of the resolution

and are pending burning for replanting or transformation: The owners will send a request to the Plant Health Service of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. Once the need has been veri ed by the personnel of the aforementioned Department, the General Director of Forest Fire Prevention will issue a resolution favorable to the burning.

In both cases, applications may be submitted in any

o cial registry, preferably in the Regional Agrarian O ce to which the farm belongs, or through the generic electronic procedure: procedure

Finally, it is important to note that these measures are exceptional in nature and, as indicated in point six of the resolution, if the circumstances that led to their publication changed, another resolution could be published that would authorize the burning again.

Springtime Serenade at La Siesta!

“It´s a grand night for singing” on Wednesday 15th May at 1930 at La Siesta Church, Calle Granados, Urb La Siesta in Torrevieja as locally renowned and popular vocal group “Lyrical” present the second of their spring two concerts called “Springtime Serenade” – a brand new programme for Spring 2024 including much loved classic show tunes from smash hit musicals such as ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘State Fair’ and ‘Carousel’ with everything from Mozart to Manilow.

Ss Peter and Paul, Torrevieja, which is hosting the concert, will welcome back their friends from Lyrical to give another of their enjoyable programmes.

Father Richard A. Seabrook SSC, the Priest at the church, said: “Lyrical gave their rst concert at La Siesta a number of years ago and we have had a close a nity with them since. They have been generous in their support for our church over the years and we love their music!” Lyrical began singing together in January 2019 and was the brainchild of Trent Harris and Philip Mitchell who between them decided to create a

small group of local talented singers, musicians and friends who just love singing together in 4-part harmony.

Father Seabrook said: “The concert is an opportunity for a delightful evening of music at La Siesta and then refreshments outside with – you´ve guessed it – a ra e. Lyrical are giving of their time and talents generously to raise money for church funds as we have to be self-supporting. I am really grateful for this.”

Tickets for “Springtime Serenade” are 10 euros and are available from Sue Maude on 693 530 935 or by emailing her at: wardenlasiesta@gmail.com. “We look forward to a really great evening – it is open to everyone,” said Father Seabrook, “Bring your family and friends. All are welcome.”

convenience and familiarity of your PC. Using the Your Phone app, you can send texts, see recent photos, triage noti cations, and use any of your favourite mobile apps - all without ever having to take your phone out of your pocket.

First, make sure that both your mobile device and the computer are logged in to the same Microsoft account.

Phone Link, previously Your Phone, is a syncing software developed by Microsoft to connect Windows PCs to Android and iOS mobile devices to view noti cations, make phone calls, use mobile apps amongst others, via the PC. It is a native component of Windows 10 (since version 1809) and Windows 11, where it is a UWP app and consists of a driver that communicates with the mobile device, where it is named the Link to Windows app. Phone Link makes use of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth for voice calls, or mobile data; it syncs via Microsoft servers, meaning that an internet connection is required.

Features

Phone Link enables a PC to send (and receive) text messaging, including both SMS and MMS.

It can also access the 2000 most recent photos on the connected phone.

Audio that is played on the phone can also be controlled on the Phone Link interface, so long as the playing apps have media controls in the Android noti cation area.

Phone Link can also be used to mirror the screen of an Android device; however, this feature is currently only available on select devices with the Link to Windows service pre-installed. The app also has a cross-device copyand-paste feature allowing users to send copied text and images between devices using the same copy-and-paste shortcuts on each device.

“How do I look at an App on my phone during a phone call”?

Put the “Speaker” on. Then select the home page (middle) icon at the bottom of the screen. From the home page select the App you require. You will still be “in the call”. When nished with the App select the “Square’ or 3 “Vertical Lines” icon to go back to the “call”.

Can beer brewing waste be turned into snacks?

Before beer becomes a beloved alcoholic beverage, it starts as cereal, undergoing a brewing process that generates bagasse, the dry brous residue left after extracting juice from sugarcane or sorghum stalks. In Europe, over seven million tonnes of bagasse are produced annually, as per calculations from the European Life Brewery project.

Now, a collaboration between Blendhub and Hijos de Rivera, the Spanish company behind Estrella Galicia, seeks innovative food ideas through ImpacTaste, a platform open to nal year university students and PhD candidates. Their task? To conceive new drinks or snacks that breathe fresh life into bagasse, limited only by the bounds of their imagination.

But bagasse doesn’t end up in the trash anymore. Sagrario Sáez, Heineken’s sustainability director, refrains from calling it waste; instead, she sees it as a valuable by-product. Both Heineken and Hijos de Rivera have been utilizing bagasse for decades, recognizing its nutritional value — rich in ber or protein, it’s deemed “gold for the food industry.”

Hijos de Rivera repurposes bagasse to feed their cattle, ensuring equitable distribution among cooperatives. The process, from beer fermentation to cattle feed, is streamlined, with the goal of maximizing waste utilization. Bagasse constitutes the majority of brewery waste, but e orts are made to repurpose other components as well, such as yeast and alcohol.

The ultimate aim is to achieve a full circular economy, maximizing resource utilization. Research endeavors explore innovative applications for waste materials like

bagasse, envisioning highprotein animal feed or even substitutes for plastic. This commitment to innovation is integral to sustainability e orts, ensuring e cient factories that bene t both the environment and society.

In this pursuit, collaboration with university students fosters a culture of innovation, potentially yielding unexpected solutions. As Sáez emphasizes, there’s always room for improvement, perpetuating a cycle of innovation and environmental stewardship in the quest for more e cient and eco-friendly practices.

Limited edition 40 euro coins to mark anniversary of King’s Proclamation

Later this year, Spain will release one million limited-edition 40-euro coins featuring King Felipe VI, commemorating the tenth anniversary of his proclamation. Crafted by the country’s Royal Mint, Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda, these collector’s coins showcase the monarch’s portrait on one side, accompanied by “Felipe VI King of Spain” in capital letters. The reverse side displays a colored rendition of the royal crown from Madrid’s Royal Palace, along with the coin’s face value and the CECA mark, symbolizing the 10th anniversary of Felipe VI’s proclamation from 2014 to 2024.

Scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2024, these coins will be initially priced at 40 euros each and will become available to the public after the Royal Mint distributes them to the Bank of Spain. Notably, a previous issue of 40 euro coins, commemorating Princess Leonor’s coming of age, garnered significant interest, prompting the suspension of online sales due to high demand. Interested collectors can now purchase these coins, among others, from the FNMT website.

Spanish banks gear up for a mortgage showdown ahead of summer

Spanish banks are determined to reverse the signi cant decline in mortgage activity caused by the rising Euribor rates. INE data reveals a staggering 18% decrease in mortgage registrations in 2023, as many homebuyers opted to utilize their savings. Recognizing the urgency to revitalize the mortgage sector, banks are now extending favorable terms to a broader market segment, including those with limited nancial means. The early months of 2024 have shown promising signs of recovery, with banks striving to bolster their portfolios before the anticipated

summer slowdown. While January saw a 10% decline in mortgage uptake compared to the annual rate, it marked a notable 33% increase from December 2023. Banks are adjusting pricing strategies, particularly in xed rates, with February witnessing a 0.3% average decrease, followed by more signi cant drops in March and April.

Despite the current average xed rate of around 3.2%, negotiations with banks could yield even better deals for eligible customers.

Although today’s mortgage rates are higher than precrisis levels, experts remain optimistic about securing favorable deals between

May and June. Fixed-rate mortgages are gaining popularity, comprising 58.2% of the market in January, as borrowers are wary of variable rates amid uncertain economic conditions. Banks are gearing up to capitalize on this demand, anticipating potential rate cuts by the European Central Bank. However, this surge in demand may lead to reduced exibility in housing prices, posing challenges for prospective buyers. Overall, nancial institutions are proactively adapting to market shifts, striving to attract solvent buyers while navigating the evolving economic landscape.

Man arrested in Catral for gender violence and a woman for attacking her mother

The Local Police of Catral carried out two arrests this past Thursday for different cases of violence. On the one hand, a man for gender violence and, on the other, a woman for attacking her mother.

Around 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, the agents went to a home in the town after being notified that a man was not letting his romantic partner leave

the house. The woman had been hit in the chest and in the house, the 27-year-old man was arrested as the perpetrator of an alleged crime of gender violence and was brought to justice.

In the afternoon, the agents were alerted again to another strong argument on public roads, specifically in the Plaza de España. There they arrested a 40-year-old woman as

the alleged perpetrator of a crime of abuse in the family, for attacking her mother continuously, since as this media has learned, it was not the first time this had happened. An arrest complicated by the altered state of the detainee and who showed resistance to the authorities. She was finally transferred to the Local Police Headquarters and brought to justice.

We all have hair on our bodies that we wish we didn’t have. From our legs to our faces to our underarms, we spend hours of our lives shaving, waxing, and removing that unwanted hair.

But there is a better way and here at Indiana’s hair and lash boutique we are so excited to announce this treatment will be available soon …

Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most e ective ways to remove unwanted body hair. If you’re tired of shaving and waxing but aren’t quite sure if you’re ready for laser treatment, keep reading.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a simple process, as long as it’s performed by a trained laser technician.

Here’s how it works: A trained technician applies a laser light to the area of unwanted hair.

The pulses of light emitted by the laser attack the hair and the follicle, destroying the hair at the root and preventing it from growing back.

Hair grows in three di erent phases, and for the laser to e ectively destroy the root, the hair needs to be in the growth phase.

It is for this reason that multiple treatments are required. In order to capture each hair in that growth phase, you will need to have several sessions spaced out roughly four weeks apart.

Laser hair removal is the best method for permanent hair removal. Ready to learn why?

Here are just some of the bene ts of laser hair removal treatment:

1. It’s Quick

If it’s a quick solution you’re searching for, laser hair removal is the fastest way to get rid of unwanted hair. You will have to have multiple treatment sessions, but most sessions only take a few minutes. The smaller the treatment area, the less time you’ll spend under the laser.

2. It’s Less Painful Than Other Hair Removal Methods

Laser hair removal is a lot less painful than most people think. Many people equate it to the feeling of snapping a rubber band against the skin.

Depending on your threshold for pain, you may nd it slightly uncomfortable, but the sessions are so fast that most people nd it easy to

Quirónsalud Gran Alacant aims to provide all the most effective and advanced medical care and surgical treatments for visual health care. Equipped with the latest technology for the diagnosis and treatment of multiple eye pathologies, it incorporates important innovations such as the implantation of multifocal and extended-range lenses in cataract surgery, laser therapy for glaucoma, micropulsed laser treatment for the retina, state-of-the-art laser surgery for myopia and astigmatism, and novel vision therapy for children and adults.

Quirónsalud in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia

Quirónsalud has ten centres in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia, forming a network at the forefront of private medicine where people are the epicentre.

endure.

3. It’s Precise

Laser technology is incredibly precise, making laser hair removal ideal for people looking to target and remove a few speci c hairs.

This makes it a great option, even if you’re looking to remove small areas of hair from the upper lip, nose, bikini line, or hairline.

4. It Can Remove Hair From Any Part of the Body

With the exception of the eyelashes, laser hair removal can be performed on any part of the body.

Quirónsalud is at the forefront of private healthcare in the Valencian Community and Murcia in terms of technological endowment, as well as comfort and benefits for both the patient and the professionals who provide their services in its centres.

It’s especially ideal for the back and bikini area, which can be hard to reach with razors and extremely painful to wax.

5. It Prevents Ingrown Hairs

Shaving, waxing, and other methods of hair removal can cause ingrown hairs. If you’re prone to ingrown hairs, laser hair removal is an excellent option.

By destroying the hair at the root, you’ll never have to worry about those pesky hairs growing back in or curling back into the body and becoming ingrown.

6. It Saves You From Having to Endure Regrowth

Some methods, such as waxing and plucking, require that you endure a bit of regrowth in between sessions. With laser hair removal, you can enjoy smooth, hair-free skin at all times.

7. It’s a Long-Term Solution

Most people see permanent, lasting results with laser hair removal. In some cases, you may need a touch-up a few months or years down the line, but it remains one of the best long-term solutions available.

At minimum, you will see a permanent reduction in hair growth that becomes easier to maintain over time.

Because it’s a long-term solution, it’s also cost e ective. Over the course of your lifetime, you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars, as there won’t be a need for monthly waxes or razor blade re lls.

Keep in mind that while laser hair removal works on all di erent skin tones, it is most e ective on people with light skin and dark hair. People with darker skin tones may experience temporary hyperpigmentation of the skin in the treated area.

If you’re fed up with tweezing, spending money on expensive razor blades, and making waxing appointments, it’s time to consider laser hair removal treatment. The side e ects of laser hair removal are minimal, and when the size of the area is small, treatment sessions only take a few minutes.

Why not phone or message Indiana’s Hair and Lash Boutique for more information and be hair free for summer.

I have gone on a dating Apps, but the men I meet are either in their 40s looking for a quick, no strings liaison; or otherwise they are men in their 80s looking for a carer. I am looking for a partner in his 60s, but I find the men of this age, want women in their 40s. I feel invisible since I started aging. I am so unhappy, and the men I meet do not make me feel any better when they say they want someone aged 40.

IDating Apps are just a cattle market in my opinion. You would do better turning to friendship groups. A hobby group in particular would be a better place to meet people. You tell me that you have tried this sort of thing, and there were very few single people; but it is important to get yourself out there,

and out of the negative, depressing environment of the Dating App. You may not meet anyone immediately, but making friends will lead to a better social life. Try to join a fun group, rather than a serious book club for instance. A walking club would be good, somewhere you can interact with people and get out. A music group is also a good idea. Joining a gym or dancing class would help you feel happy and positive. Look up ‘social groups in Torrevieja’; there are many.

Rojales Pantomime Group raise funds for four different charities in 2024

This year, the Rojales Pantomime Group are spreading funds raised from their 2023 Pantomime across four charities. The Torrevieja Alzheimer´s Association recently accepted €2000. Last week, a further €1000 was shared between the Rojales Caritas and Help Vega Baja. Further funds are earmarked for the San Fulgencio Caritas. Dee Braiden, last year´s Director and John Fagg, the Chairman of the Pantomime Group presented the donations to the grateful recipients.

This year´s Pantomime preparations are well underway with a full cast who are raring to go and a new Director, Alison Clough supported by her Co Director, Leigh Humphries. While the group are extremely lucky to have many members that are happy to work behind the Scenes, they still require more people to work Backstage, Front of House etc. If you think you might be able to help, contact Alison at dw2024rojalespanto@gmail. com for further details.

Lo Crispin Golf Society at Alenda

On 17th. April 32 members and guests ‘teed it up’ to compete for the Harry Wilcock (Just One More) Trophy, in memory of Harry, who sadly passed away last year. Although somewhat breezy, generally the weather for playing golf was good. It was a pity though that the course was not in good condition, as some fairways were quite patchy. This no doubt was a consequence of the general shortage of water. Davide at the Lo Crispin Tavern kindly provided food in the evening for players and their guests, as well as entertainment, from a local saxophonist/singer. Over 250 euros was raised for the Helping Hands charity in Algorfa. Prior to the food and entertainment the day’s prizes were distributed.

Barcelona fined for fans racist behaviour

Barcelona has been ned 25,000 euros (£21,400) by UEFA for the racist behavior exhibited by their fans during the Champions League quarter- nal rst-leg match against Paris St Germain. The incident, which took place at Parc des Princes on April 10, resulted in three charges against the club, including acts of damage and the lighting of reworks.

UEFA’s Appeals Body announced on Thursday that Barcelona will face sanctions for the racist behavior of their fans and will be prohibited from selling tickets to their away supporters for the Spanish club’s

next UEFA competition match. However, this ticket ban has been suspended for a probationary period of one year, beginning from the date of the present decision.

In addition to the racist behavior ne, Barcelona must pay a 2,000 euro penalty for lighting reworks and a further 5,000 euro ne for acts of damage.

Following a 3-2 victory in the rst leg in Paris, Barcelona su ered a 4-1 defeat in the second leg at home this week, leading to their elimination from the Champions League with a 6-4 aggregate score.

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 16th of April we fished the 6th round of the Abbey angling spring cup at the El Bosquet complex at Crevillent. Twenty two anglers turned out on what was a warm but windy day which made long pole fishing extinct on most pegs.

Winner on the day and I have lost count on the number of times I have said this, was Neil McBernie. Drawn on peg 40 he struggled to catch on the pole so turned to the feeder rod and caught some decent carp for 21.08kg.

In second place from the unfancied peg 8 was Gary Plant. Gary also used several tactics of pole and feeder and caught lots of small carp for 18.18kg.

In third place was the current leader of the Spring cup ,Bob Robinson. Bod did manage to fish the pole long from peg 15 and using maggots shallow caught carp for 14.84kg.

The rest of the complex fished pretty tough with a couple of dry nets. The best weight on the A1 to 7 section was Bill Cannon , who fished the feeder with maggots from peg B1 and weighed 14.84kg.

I am very sorry that I do not have the results for the Wednesday match. Meanwhile in the Spring cup things are hoting up and after Bob leading the way Nick Bastock is second and I am in third place. I would like to take this opportunity to remind anglers that there is a match at El Bosquet

on every Tuesday and Wednesday. We do book pegs with the owners and lately we have been using pegs A1 to 16 and 32 to 40 depending on numbers .Also this complex only officially opens at 8am so its no use turning up at 7 and settling down on a peg when a match has been booked.

We do whenever possible try to accommodate the pleasure anglers but with over 50 members in the club this is not always possible. I am well aware that we do not own this complex but we certainly spend a lot more on peg fees than any other club or anglers and we do have the full support of the fishery management.
