Driving licence negotiations ‘progressing’ the negotiations between the British and spanish governments about the validity of uK driving licences for residents in spain continue to proceed but are as yet, unresolved. the Foreign office reached out to Britons in spain this week saying, “We know there are lots of questions and concerns about the ongoing negotiations on driving licence exchange. We’ve rounded up the

most common questions you’re sending in to provide you with more information, as well as an update on what’s happened this week.

We also know that all you want is to be back on the roads - and we want this too. We hope the below is helpful in providing transparency and understanding around the process.” the Q&A issued by the FCo on Friday is as follows:

When are we going to be able to drive again?

We don’t know for sure because it is a live negotiation, but the uK’s ambition is to reach a deal as soon as possible. We genuinely are making progress each week. For example, this week we have agreed the main text, which means there are only the annexes outstanding. We recognise it has been frustratingly slow though.

Will it be before the end of July?

Will talks be paused over August? it remains our aspiration to agree the remaining parts as soon as possible. the important paperwork from spain, which the Ambassador mentioned as outstanding last Friday, arrived this morning (*22/07) and the uK team is now reviewing it as quickly as they can. once everything is finalised, the agreement will then need legal and political approvals.

We are committed to get this through the uK and spanish systems quickly, however, as we’ve said before, we cannot make any guarantees.

We have sought assurances from the spanish government that we can continue negotiating in August if needs be. on the uK side, we have a full team available to cover this negotiation over the summer because it is a top priority for us.

Why has it taken so long?

Creating an international treaty is always complex. in this instance, the spanish government also asked for data provision to form part of the driving licence exchange process, something which no other eu Member state asked for, and which requires careful legal and operational considerations. Urgent measures demanded for Torrevieja Emergency Department Political party Ciudadanos has requested action from Minister of health, Miguel Mínguez, in the face of what it describes as absolute chaos.

Ciudadanos spokesperson for health, Fernando llopis, has requested the appearance in the Valencian Parliament of Mínguez to report on the measures that the Ministry is adopting in the face of “the terrible situation in which the patients of the torrevieja hospital find themselves”, and has criticized “the absolute chaos that has become” what was “a reference centre for the Vega Baja area after its reversal, purely sectarian and ideological.” llopis has denounced the “regrettable situation faced by patients”, who have seen how “the hours they have to wait to be treated have doubled”. he demanded that measures must be taken, and “this involves changing those responsible who do not know how to manage a hospital, in addition to putting in place adequate means so that the patients of the torrevieja hospital are treated in the same conditions as the rest of the Valencians”, added llopis. the politician has also asked for explanations about the situation surrounding sAMu ambulances in the Valencian Community. “in recent weeks we have learned that it is estimated

that 400 ambulances still lack an assigned doctor due to lack of personnel,” stressed llopis, who has reproached Mínguez for “the terrible conditions that our sAMus have.” For this reason, the regional deputy has asked the minister to report on “how he intends to improve the situation of a basic and necessary public health service.” llopis’ comments come just days after the health department issued its own statement about improvements made to torrevieja hospital’s emergency department. it claimed that it has improved facilities to offer greater accessibility and safety in the provision of care. in the statement, health officials said, “the emergency service of the university hospital of torrevieja has begun the

undertaking of a construction project that will improve the facilities to guarantee greater safety in the provision of care. substantial improvement in the accessibility of the service is a priority, framed in the shock Plan launched by the department of health to improve care in the emergency service.” the objective of the project, said officials, is to create a more open space where professionals can communicate more easily. it described a central area which would allow patients to be monitored more closely. the only reference to staffing was to say that the plan “is accompanied by a reinforcement of the structure and services, in addition to the extension of hours and the provision of specialists.”

Flamingo chicks thrive on Torrevieja salt lake Around a thousand young flamingos, hatched recently on torrvieja’s pink salt lake, are thriving in the nesting area thanks to a dam that traverses the lake. the species, which nested for the first time during lockdown in 2020, has adapted well to human activity on the wetland with salt harvesting back up to pre pandemic levels. thousands of flamingos chose the pink lake of torrevieja to nest. this was the third consecutive year that the pink birds have nested here and it seems to have been a success. the reproduction of this species had never been documented in the torrevieja and la Mata lagoons natural park, according to Federico Kenzelmann Area, a salt worker and nature photographer who has followed the progress of the birds almost daily since the first nesting in 2020.

At the beginning of February, colourful displays of the courtships began to be observed. At the end of March, more than a thousand flamingos were spotted in the neighbouring lake of la Mata and another thousand in

torrevieja and in mid-April it was confirmed: there were 400 nesting couples perched on the dam that divides the lagoon in torrevieja. While the first 30 chicks were hatched at the end of May, more and more breeding pairs arrived to the nesting area.

Flamingos lay a single egg it is estimated that there is now up to a thousand hatchlings on the salt lake. Flamingos are

very sensitive to any alteration in their breeding habitat so the figure is incredible for a nesting site with such a large volume of industrial activity from one of the most active salt mines in europe. the birds seem to have become accustomed to the “harvester” coming and going through the lake, which they no longer seem to identify as a danger.

Kenzelmann is the only photographer who has been able to get close to the nesting area. he has achieved his unique insight into the daily lives of the flamingo families by swimming across the lake and camouflaging himself to capture his stunning imagery. heavy and persistent rains in spring provided an abundance of food for the birds because the water lost some of its salinity and allowed the brine shrimp to hatch in abundance. the big key to the success of the nesting activity is the existence of the dam which traverses the lake. it was built in the 90s to preserve the salt production in the eastern sector of the lagoon, and is giving shelter to the flamingos’ nesting area.

Why can’t the temporary measures be reinstated now?

We have asked for this but spain have not agreed to the request.

Who are the key players in negotiations? the negotiations are being led by the department of transport (dft) on the uK side and the interior Ministry’s dVlA equivalent agency, dirección general de tráfico (dgt), on the spanish side, in collaboration with the British embassy in spain and the spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Beaches continue to go smoke free 25% of the Alicante province’s beaches have been declared non-smoking spaces. A new regional law allows individual town halls to issue fines for consuming tobacco on the beach.

Pulmonologists support the measure for respiratory health as well as environmental hygiene since cigarette butts take many years to decompose. it is estimated that 15% of cigarette butts smoked on the beach end up buried in the sand and that 2,500 cigarettes are collected daily on the beaches of the municipality of Alicante alone. until now it was what is described as an ‘informative and non-penalty measure’, but the town halls that wish to do so can issue fines for smoking in on beaches by applying a new regional law.

According to estimates, the cleaning services of coastal towns throughout

the province remove around 200 kilos of cigarette butts daily. Cigarette butt are highly polluting because they are made of cellulose acetate, a thermoplastic material that takes between 5 and 10 years to degrade and containing toxic substances such as cadmium, arsenic, nickel, tar or toluene. eusebi Chiner, head of Pulmonology at hospital de sant Joan said ,”it is a measure that all pulmonologists support, on the one hand for the concept of hygiene or respiratory health, but above all in the Valencian Community, where the beaches are very crowded” For this reason, the new law is fully supported by the spanish society of Pulmonology and thoracic surgery. “second-hand smoke causes respiratory problems, apart from the impact that (smoking on the beach) can have on children,” Chiner said.

At present the charity is arranging about 60 early detection screening tests for a variety of cancers every month as well as its continued fundraising for cancer charity AACC.

Fleet of drones to monitor beaches

the government unveiled a fleet of eight state of the art drones which will monitor the beaches of the Alicante province this summer. the unmanned aircraft were presented in Playa Flamenca this week where they were used as part of an emergency rescue drill to demonstrate their effectiveness. the drones will patrol the beaches of orihuela Costa, guardamar, Altea, Benidorm, dénia, santa Pola, Xàbia and el Campello. the aim of the use of drones is to reinforce public safety in terms of rescue and first aid.

Minister of Justice, interior and Public Administration, gabriela Bravo, was in Playa Flamenca for the first deployment of the drones. she explained that the devices will be put to work this summer to reinforce surveillance and prevention work on the beaches of the province of Alicante.

After the success of the rescue drone project last year, when six lives were saved, for this seaso the number of municipalities to be monitored throughout the Valencian Community has doubled, from 10 to 20.

Bravo remarked that the drones will provide an additional element of ‘prevention’ to bolster the town halls’ own resources, given that through the state of the art devices, the entire coastline can be viewed, and time can be saved during an emergency response. Bravo indicated that the drones are capable of taking off in five seconds and fly at a speed of 85

kilometers per hour, so “in just a few seconds they can be over the water where a potential drowning is taking place.”

Bravo recalled that last summer the drones of the Valencian Agency for security and emergency Response saved six lives in direct rescue actions, thanks to the fact that they also have the capacity to launch a lifebuoy to swimmers who are in danger.

Bravo underlined that this is the only community in spain and, she claimed, the only territory in the world that has these technological resources. “We are committed to everyone’s safety,” she added, also taking into account that “our beaches are a tourist attraction.” the Minister also confirmed that up to the month of June there

were 24 drownings in the Valencian Community. of these, 17 people lost their lives in the Alicante the province, “unaffordable” figures that “in most cases could have been avoided,” she said. in 2021, the rescue drones carried out 2,101 flights over a total of 3,593 kilometers of coastline. however, the minister was keen to stress that human awareness is as important as the technical side and that the human teams that participate in the generalitat Platges segures campaign and the awareness of the public in general are vital. “We put all the resources at our disposal, we have the will and we have the means, but the determining factor in reducing the numbers of people who lose their lives every summer on the

beaches has a lot to do with personal responsibility,” she said.

For this reason, she has insisted that it is important to act responsibly, so that “the collective effort adds to ending the losses that we have to regret every year”. thus, she has reminded the population of the basic advice, including respecting the flags, swimming only when in full physical health, avoiding alcohol consumption, not going into the sea without a lifeguard and maintaining extra supervision of minors.

Before carrying out the drill of the rescue drone service in Playa Flamenca, Bravo, in her capacity as Minister for Justice, visited the Coastal emergency Center, being the first official from regional government

to visit the facility, as although it has been open since May 31, the official opening ceremony has not yet taken place. the building was opened with a 24-hour citizen service including guardia Civil, local Police and national Police. she concluded her visit with the promise that services would be added to its 4,700 square meters designed to house Firefighters, Civil Protection and forestry brigades. the project, which began in 2010 and was stopped in 2012, was taken up a decade later by the town hall, which awarded the works to the doalco company for more than 2 million euro, financed by the generalitat. the completion of the first floor, which has been left unfinished, requires another 600,000 euros.

300,000 people in the province cannot afford to have their home at an adequate temperature energy poverty has increased in the last year, driven by the increase in the price of electricity and in the cost of living. experts recommend that interior temperatures should be maintained at around 23 degrees in order that it is comfortable and healthy. however, with the price of electricity skyrocketing in recent months and a prolonged heatwave, many families in the Alicante province simply cannot afford air conditioning. this so called ‘energy poverty’ is a situation that affects more and more people, given that the prices of electricity, together with the cost of living, do not stop rising. some 300,000 people in the province of Alicante have difficulty keeping their homes at a suitable temperature, according to the latest survey on living conditions published by the national institute of statistics. Compared to the previous survey, the figure has increased by almost 47,000 people.

Many people who are in the lower wage bracket earn just too much to apply for any help with their electricity bills while others, who would qualify, are stuck because landlords want to keep utility bills in their own names so, although their tenants must keep paying the bills, they cannot apply for

the government’s current help scheme. electricity bills in the Alicante province are up by 10.4% compared to last year. grocery shopping is 14% more than last year. Combined, these rises are having an impact on many people, but in particular, on low income families.

Woman dies after choking on cupcake wrapper

A woman who was living at Alicante’s santa Faz Care Center for People with Mental disabilities died after she choked on a cupcake (‘magdalena’) wrapper.

According to Julián Castells, president of the parents’ association, the victim was 50 years old and resided permanently in at the home as she suffered from what he described as ‘a profound mental disability’.

Reports indicate that during breakfast the

woman hid a magdalena in her pocket.

After breakfast, she went to the bathroom and secretly ate the cake with the wrapper, which caused her to choke.

Careworkers found her on the floor of the toilet and tried several times to resuscitate her including by CPR and using a defibrillator, however nothing could be done to save her life. the coroner has since determined that the cause of death was

accidental. the parents’ association is considering filing a complaint, since they consider that there was negligence in terms of monitoring the patients of the centre. this is also not the first time that this particular centre has been criticised by parents and relatives, who on numerous occasions have reported irregularities and lack of personnel.

Rojales looks to the future

Rojales City Council has started the process to prepare the urban Agenda Rojales 2030 , which will design the municipal strategy including the city model for the next decade and that will align municipal policies and projects with the 17 goals of sustainable development of the un. this future strategy is based on the work carried out in recent years where the Rojales government team has implemented sustainable development measures across the board in all municipal areas. the presentation of the project was made in the Plenary hall with the town’s Mayor Antonio Pérez garcía explaining that it “will be the roadmap that turns Rojales into the municipality that all the residents help to design through a consensus. this strategic Plan aims to encourage equality between people, protect the planet and ensure prosperity. the 2030 urban Agenda will identify and prioritise the needs of the residents of the municipality. in order to achieve this, it will promote citizen participation in the city’s social, economic and educational realms, seeking people’s opinion and involving them in the process and decisionmaking regarding the challenges facing town in the coming years. the Plan’s steering Committee has begun to define several strategic axes, based on which the work groups will be developed. the Administration, the key agents, the associations and finally, all citizens will be integrated into them.

Brother Andres, the Charity steward from White River lodge 153, recently visited Amigos de la Calle following a donation of one thousand euros to assist them with purchasing food and clothing for their invaluable work in helping the homeless of the City. starting as a group of friends to feed 70

Fin whales spotted off Torrevieja on sunday morning a group of large fin whales, the second largest whale species, was sighted off the coast of torrevieja, on their regular migration to the Atlantic ocean.

As described by weather watch Facebook page, Proyecto Mastral, the sighting occurred just three miles from the coast, and the whales even performed some spectacular jumps, which were been recorded by

delighted onlookers from a nearby sailboat.

Biologist Juan Antonio Pujol explained that the presence of fin whales in the Mediterranean is common, since it is part of their migratory corridor towards the strait of gibraltar. the route they follow, he points out, “goes from the ligurian sea, passing between the Balearic islands and the iberian Peninsula, reaching Cabo de la nao

Elche man hits child and drags officer along road A 75 year-old elche man wreaked havoc after hitting a child and driving away with a police officer hanging onto the driver’s door. the man was reversing when he hit a child who was on a pedestrian crossing in Avenida novelda. luckily, the child only had minor injuries, but onlookers were amazed when the man then drove into a parked car, getting his vehicle stuck on the cars bumper.

Police arrived to a chaotic scene and gave the man instructions so they could free the cars. however, the man refused to release the handbrake and put the car in neutral gear. instead, he started the car and drove away. A quick thinking police officer tried to stop him but before he was able to do anything he was dragged for around 10 metres down the road, clinging to the door. the officer was able to grab hold of the steering wheel as he struggled with the driver, trying to get him to stop the car. during the struggle, the car ploughed into several other parked vehicles, before finally coming to a halt. the driver was arrested at the scene and the child was checked by a medical crew.

Fin whale specimens can reach 25 meters in length and 45 tons in weight. they are the second largest type of whale on earth, after the blue whale.

CCTV in Callosa

A spate of robberies in Callosa de segura has led to the town Council installing eight 24-hour CCtV cameras at all access points to the Cueva Ahumada recreational area. the space is part of the larger municipal natural park and is a popular place for hikers and nature lovers. however, there have been several thefts, robberies and instances of car crimes carried out in the area in recent weeks.

Authorities hope the cameras will deter the criminals or lead to arrests if further crimes are caught on camera.

Brit rescued by helicopter

A British man, suffering from dementia, has been rescued by helicopter after going missing near Benidorm. Richard Morris, aged 76, disappeared whilst on a trip to the Aqualandia Water Park.

Although being found just 500m away in the sierra gelda natural park, he had a number of injuries, having walked bare foot and was dehydrated. the emergency services launched the rescue helicopter as the terrain was too rough for road vehicles to get through. his grateful family explained that his condition means that he can often get confused as to his surroundings.

Puig names Elche woman as new cyber security chief President of the Valencian Community, Ximo Puig has named Carolina Pascual as the new commissioner for digitization and cyber security.

Former Minister Carolina Pascual was named as Commissioner of the Presidency of the generalitat for digitization and Cyber security of the Valencian Community earlier this week at a meeting with Puig and Arcadi españa, Minister for Finance and economics. the appointment comes as Pascual, from elche, steps away from her position as Minister of innovation and universities.

Puig held a meeting with Pascual in which he informed her of her decision to appoint her as head of the Community’s analysis of digital policies.

Pascual is a professor at the university of Alicante in the department of Physics, systems engineering and signal theory, and, in addition, has vast experience in the study and development of technology, science and digital policies, which is why she has been appointed as a commissioner.

Both the creation of the position and the appointment of a commissioner will be formalised by a new decree. the creation of a cyber security and digitization commissioner

reflects the“need to have a global vision of the situation in terms of information security, in order to carry out a coherent strategy in the planning, coordination and control of digital policies, information technologies, telecommunications and corporate communications and the teleadministration of the generalitat, which allow the continuation of the digital transformation of the Valencian Community and the administration of the generalitat”.

New Indian rhino arrives in Benidorm Summer carnival parade returns to Torrevieja A new indian rhinoceros has arrived on the Costa Blanca as terra natura in Benidorm continues to promote the conservation of the vulnerable species.

Jaffna is a 27 year old male indian rhinoceros that has arrived from Basel zoo in switerland. Keepers at terra natura hope to engage Jaffna in the park’s breeding programme to help conserve the species which is currently under threat.

Jaffna weighs 2,100kg and is 180cm tall. he was born in the san diego Zoo (usA) and later lived in Basel. thanks to his good character and ability as a breeder, he has travelled several times to other institutions to breed. in fact, his transfer to terra natura Benidorm was in response to a recommendation by the eeP (european endangered Program) of the need to perpetuate the genetic phylum of another of the females from the park, nisha. the coordinating committee of the eeP annually evaluates the global population of indian rhinos housed in the zoological, looking at their genetic compatibility to establish the most suitable unions to maintain the species. this program has made it possible for two calves to be born at terra natura Benidorm, both by shiwa. the first was the male shusto, who was born in February 2012 and became the first indian rhino calf born in the iberian Peninsula. the second was duna, who was born in september 2019. in 2015, shusto was transferred to Fota (Cork, ireland), so the park currently has four indian rhinos: shiwa, 20 years old, with a calm, very maternal character; nisha, 21, more nervous than her companions; duna, two and

a half years old, very attached to her mother (shiwa) and playful as is normal for her age; and now Jaffna. terra natura Benidorm is fast becoming a benchmark in the conservation of this species as in spain there is no other park that has four specimens of indian rhino.

Jaffna’s transfer began in Basel (the zoo of origin), after an exhaustive document management process and the visit of keepers and veterinarians from terra natura Benidorm to meet the anima. he was transferred by road in a specialized vehicle equipped with all the necessary measures to guarantee the welfare of the animal during the trip. the spanish park keepers have learned a few swiss german words for Jaffna’s basic routines so that the animal can become familiar with the team and the park. A few days after his arrival, Jaffna began to go out into his

meadow exploring every corner and meeting his new companions. After the initial period of adaptation to his new environment, new keepers, routines and of course the climate, Jaffna is already practically integrated into terra natura life and visitors can see him enjoying his meadow on a daily basis. the species is threatened, although thanks to conservation efforts its populations have increased. Currently, work is being done to diversify the areas where it lives. the indian rhino is considered to be an “indicator species” and its evolution is a bioindicator of the state of the ecosystems it inhabits. two of the great threats to which this species is subjected are poaching and the loss of its habitat. despite the fact that poachers kill these animals to get their horn, there is no scientific evidence to support its properties as a medicine or aphrodisiac.

A last minute effort has seen torrevieja recover its popular summer parade. With contracting sorted out just three weeks before the event, it looks like the hugely popular ‘summer carnival’ parade will take place on August 13th at 8.30pm. Colourful costumes and decorated floats will parade through the town from the Virgen del Carmen cultural centre and along Calle Ramon gallud. the parade is set to coincide with the forthcoming Crazy urban Festival which takes place around the same dates, featuring rapper Kase.o, Ayax and Prok, omar Montes, Fernandocosta and Juancho Marqués, among others. the total cost of the parade, including performances and catering for the troupes and participants, reaches 32,655 euros. the town hall also approved the torrelamata summer festivals for an amount of 36,565 euros. in addition, the local government team has given the green light to the public exhibition for a period of 20 days of the Montecarlo urban project, so that all those interested will be able to consult the report on sustainability, planning, plots, roads and costs. the project is set to rejuvenate a vacant lot, pending urbanization for many years, at the torrevieja exit towards Alicante, in the vicinity of Mercadona, where a bridge was even built in preparation

for use. its development would allow the area to be reorganized, eliminating plots that are not in use. the governing board has also approved the draft modification 106 of the general urban development Plan (Pgou), the oldest in spain without being revised. this change in urban planning aims to authorize the construction of public facilities on land qualified for use as green areas. in the same modification of the Pgou, the authorization of rainwater collection infrastructures on land also destined for parks and gardens, always below ground level, is also taken into consideration. the town hall has also put out to tender the comprehensive remodelling of the 15 year old Municipal leisure Center (the CMo building behind Carrefour), with a budget of 617,378 euros. Companies have until August 8 to present their offers, and, once the works have been tendered, the execution of the works must be carried out in four months.

Torrevieja ‘just says no’ 51 hotel and nightlife establishments in torrevieja participate in the “Responsible service” program alongside anti drugs charity Controla Club. the initiative, with the collaboration of the town hall and hostelry association, is financed by the government delegation for the national Plan on drugs. the “responsible service” programme aims to promote safe, healthy, responsible and quality leisure throughout torrevieja’s nightlife scene.

Controla Club tries to encourage people to enjoy themselves on nights out without having to resort to excessive amounts of alcohol and taking drugs and has ran several awareness campaigns to communicate to youngsters that they’re more likely to ruin a night out by dabbling in recreational drugs or going too far with alcohol. the charity Controla Club teamed up with nightlife venues across torrevieja to reach out to partygoers, especially young people, as they celebrate nights out. the town hall said that “the collaboration of the hospitality sector is an especially useful tool for promoting responsible and healthy leisure habits, especially with the recently inaugurated summer season in which the influx of public increases with tourism.”

mediators from the Controla Club charity engaged in walkaround awareness campaigns in the main leisure areas of torrevieja with the aim of promoting the initiative among bars and nightlife venues. in total, 51 establishments in the town have signed up to the campaign. the main aim is to promote, through the venues themselves, safe and responsible nights out. this includes the responsible sale of alcoholic beverages, the control of the traffic and consumption of illegal drugs, the protection of minors and the safety and security of the facilities.

Controla Club’s mediation team distributed information posters to the bars and their workers with preventive

messages aimed at the public. the campaign also promotes a Code of good Practice that includes recommendations and action protocols that bars can adhere to in order to offer a responsible service. the Controla Club is a nonprofit ngo, established in 1997, which was established with the aim of addressing social responsibility alongside the growth of the leisure industry. in recognition of its work, the ngo has been recognized with various awards, including the Reina sofía Award for social Work in 2007.

President of helP Vega Baja, Michele Masson, spoke this week about the need for more volunteers to join the charity to meet the increased number of requests the charity is receiving from people within the community.

Michele told Costa Blanca People that since Covid there had been a significant increase in the number of people turning to the charity for help. Carers particularly are finding it very difficult with many having little, if any, respite.

By the time we meet them they are frequently exhausted, and we do everything we can to ensure they are receiving everything that is available to them, being a listening ear as well as offering whatever practical support we can.

Volunteering can change lives – the lives of the people receiving advice and support from a volunteer and the life of the person freely giving their time and effort to a charity such as helP Vega Baja and the local community in general.

Being a volunteer has been shown to increase self-confidence, selfesteem, promote positive health

and of course provide the volunteer with the opportunity to make new friends. helP Vega Baja has grown as a charity and is looking to increase our team of volunteers, throughout the charity.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the latest uK inflation reportmust have made for some fairly sombre reading down at the Bank of england. With headline inflation rising to 9.4% (yoy) from 9.1%, and much of the rise being attributed to higher energy prices, the Boe’s MPC will face some tough choices ahead. Boe governor, Andrew Bailey, suggested that the Boe would be prepared to increase the level of rate hikes from 25bps to 50bps, during a speech earlier in the week. given the move by the eCB (see euR) it would be no surprise if the Boe did as much, at their next meeting in August.the Boe may actually have a window to justify a bigger hike, given that recent data in the shape of the monthly gdP and employment report, have both beaten estimates. We just need to get to August in one piece. in a week when the race to become the next tory party leader was whittled down to Rishi sunak and liz truss, with both suggesting that they would cut taxes if successful, the latest uK debt interest payment report was rather timely published by the office for national statistics (ons). the uK government are now paying an eye-watering £19.4bn a month in debt interest payments, which is up a whopping £10.3bn from this time last year. to make matters worse, around a quarter of that figure is linked to inflation. ouch. either sunak and truss havethe magic powers beyond that of the great houdini,or the world’s largest sofa to find the cash from, or their desire to please the nation by cutting taxes will be restricted by the servicing of existing debt further down the road. time will tell.

As for the pound, well sterling has had a steady week. gBP/usd moved back beyond 1.2000 for a spell, with most of that move being driven by positive market sentiment, which has been a strain on the greenback. on the data front, today’s Retail sales, down 5.8% (yoy/Jun) versus -5.3% exp, may have given the Boe a reminder that all is not well for the uK consumer.

EURO After 11 years, the eCB finally raised euro area rates yesterday afternoon. the surprising news was the size of the hike, and at 50bps (on the main refinancing rate), was twice the amount that Christine lagarde had promised would be forthcoming from the eCB this month. given that the trend for central banks recently has been to promise one thing to markets and then deliver something completely different, one wonders whether the policy of central banks giving markets forward guidance is rapidly becoming pointless and redundant. the eCB confirmed as much during their postmeeting press conference, with Christine lagarde suggesting that each meeting will be live and data dependent, and that the need for the eCB to raise rates by a larger amount was put into place shortly before the meeting, as indicators pointed to a further deterioration of the inflation outlook.

We touched on this in our daily commentary earlier in the week. lagarde also gave more colour on the new eCB bond purchase scheme, transmission Protection instrument (tPi), which should help to cap borrowing costs for the more indebted nations within the eZ, as the eCB embark on further rate hikes down the road. indeed, markets have now priced in around 60bps worth of hikes by the eCB for their next meeting in september. Within a few hours, the danish central bank also raised rates in denmark by the same margin, from -0.6% to -0.1%.

After initially rallying as high as 1.0280, euR/ usd was unable to sustain the upside momentum, and slipped back under 1.0200 by this (Friday) morning. gBP/euR mirrored euR/usd, slipping as low as 1.1640, before bouncing back over 1.1700 after the eCB press conference. Perhaps part of the reason for the abandoned rally in the single currency may have been markets having one eye on the developing political story in italy. After an explosive week, Mario draghi resigned as prime minister and dissolved parliament, initially placing further pressure on italy’s borrowing costs.

Smuggler caught bringing Marbella club shooting Picasso into Spain

What is thought to be an original sketch by Pablo Picasso was taken on board a flight from Zurich to ibiza as hand luggage, packed into a cardboard cylinder. nothing was declared. the passenger has been accused of smuggling the item, entitled ‘trois personnages’, in a bid to avoid customs duties and import VAt, not to mention the additional administrative obligations the artwork is subject to, according to the Ministry of Finance. spanish cultural authorities have since issued a preliminary report confirming the authenticity of a sketch believed to be by Pablo Picasso that was confiscated at ibiza airport on 5th July from a passenger on a flight from Zurich, switzerland. the expert opinion, issued at the request of the spanish Culture Ministry, still needs to be backed by further reports using advanced art authentication techniques. the swiss authorities alerted spanish customs that a traveller flying to ibiza from Zurich was carrying a work of art they considered suspiciously valuable, despite the traveller’s insistence that it was not an original.

After landing on the island, the passenger denied he had

anything to declare when passing through customs for non-eu travellers, leading to his luggage being checked and the discovery of the drawing, bearing Pablo Picasso’s signature. the passenger again insisted it was a copy, and even produced a handwritten invoice to confirm his purchase of the sketch for a sum of 1,500 swiss francs or 1,514 euros. searching further, spanish customs officers then found another invoice from an art gallery in Zurich for 450,000 swiss francs or approximately 450,000 euros with the description ‘trois Personnages’. the officers then confiscated the sketch as an object brought into spain from outside the

eu with a suspected value exceeding the legal 150,000 euros.

Customs then began negotiations with the general directorate of the Culture Ministry’s department of Cultural heritage and Fine Arts who contacted an expert in contemporary art from the eivissa Contemporary Art Museum on the island of ibiza. the latter reported that the work was an original Picasso with a market value corresponding to the approximately €450,000 on the invoice. the definitive accreditation of the work will be made soon using advanced art analysis techniques. Meanwhile, the 1966 work of art is being held by the courts.

the court in Marbella has remanded two people in custody, following the shooting at the opium Beach Club. the pair are being investigated for four crimes of attempted murder, injury and illegal possession of weapons, one as the perpetrator and the other as a an accomplice, according to the high Court of Justice of Andalucía. Four people suffered gunshot injuries, two seriously, while the alleged shooter was stabbed in the incident which happened last week. the judicial developments come as one of the seriously injured gunshot victims – a 32-year-old irishman – was transferred from an intensive care unit and onto a ward where he was arrested and

remains under police guard.

According to the national Police investigations, the irishman could be one of the companions of the individual who stabbed the alleged gunman, a 40-yearold dutch man who is being held in jail. he was seated at the opium’s ViP area with a group of dutch men adjacent to a table of young foreigners, mainly British. it is believed problems began when one youngster poured himself a drink from a bottle belonging to the dutch table. they alerted the security staff, who ejected the man from the premises. however, the individual returned armed with a knife.

According to court testimony from one of the detainees, they

saw him climb onto the sofa and allegedly stabbed the 40-yearold dutch man multiple times.

According to sources, the hospitalised irishman allegedly threw an object at the dutch group and hit the man who had just been stabbed. the stabbed dutchman then, allegedly, pulled out a concealed handgun and opened fire. he hit the young irishman in the chest and also three other clubbers. A 32-year-old woman remains in intensive care but is believed to be making a slow recovery. however, the gunman did not hit the man with the knife, who managed to escape. Police are currently trying to locate and arrest him. officers say that he is a friend of the arrested irishman.

Vega Baja Hospital to get 70 million euro cash boost

during a recent visit to orihuela, the president of the generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, announced that the expansion of the Vega Baja hospital in orihuela will be tendered this week.

According to the head of the Consell, it is expected that the expansion works of

the hospital, located in the municipality of orihuela, will begin before the end of the year and will have a work period of 30 months. this action, with an investment of 70 million euros, will consist of the construction of two new buildings that will increase the area by 40 percent, that is, by 16,700 square meters

more. likewise, it should be noted that the work will be the largest in execution in the province of Alicante, ahead of the expansion and reform of the Marina Baixa hospital, whose investment amounts to 60 million euros and which has recently begun.

Love Island host quits radio

Laura Whitmore has quit her highprofile radio DJ job at the BBC to boost her growing TV career. The Irish personality, 37, has presented her Sunday morning programme for four years after signing up to the station in 2018.

In that time, her profile on television has gone from strengthto-strength, including landing the role of Love Island host after she took over from Caroline Flack in 2020. It’s believed that the mum-of-one is paid £600,000 for the role which has seen her featured on screens for less than 20 minutes since the ITV2 dating show returned last month.

Heidi Dawson, controller of BBC Radio 5 Live, confirmed Whitmore’s departure and praised her contribution to the station in a statement.

It read: “Laura has made the difficult decision to leave after a brilliant four

years. We’d like to thank her for the energy, insight and humour she has brought to this programme and look forward to ¬working with her again in the near future.”

Meanwhile, a source said: “Love Island has given her huge exposure and a healthy pay packet, and she’s now going to exploit that to the max.

Laura has already hinted she has other projects in the pipeline and she can’t find the time to continue with all her roles. So something had to go, and it’s sad for listeners that this is what’s been jettisoned as she moves onwards and upwards,” they added.

Whitmore recently teased a top secret TV project that she has been working on.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, she said: “It’s very very different, it’s a big thing that I’ve been working on for a while; it’s awesome.”

Coronation Street star Mikey North’s wife is desperate for him to swap Weatherfield for the ballroom dancefloor. Rachael Isherwood is ‘very much into’ the idea of the actor, who plays Gary Windass, showing off his moves on Strictly Come Dancing.

Fitness instructor Rachael was previously a dancer, so the ITV panellist joked he would have one up on fellow contestants if he were to appear on the BBC contest. However, the 35-year-old shrugged off the suggestion, saying he wasn’t sure if he’s ‘up to the standard quite yet.’

When asked what reality programme he would consider joining, Mikey replied he was a cooking lover, so a show like MasterChef would appeal to him. As well as discussing his dancing abilities, Christine and her fellow co-

hosts, Denise Welch, Janet Street-Porter and Coleen Nolan on Loose Women asked about his action sequences on Corrie.

Mikey joked he was a ‘frustrated stuntman more than anything, more than an actor.’

‘I love getting stuck in and doing the fight scenes and getting hit by cars, things like that,’ he added.

Mikey then went on to tease that tonight’s episode would feature some of his ‘best’ stunts and nailbiting moments.

His character in Corrie has been under immense pressure recently, having managed to keep a secret the fact he murdered Rick Neelan. But the former builder has been facing a number of risky moments where it looks like the truth could be exposed.

SUMMER SALADS Turkey, strawberry & avocado salad

Ingredients 400g turkey breast mini fillets 2 lemons, 1 zested and juiced, 1 sliced

STEP 2 Whisk the lemon zest and juice with the maple syrup. Slowly whisk in the oil, then the poppy seeds. Season.

STEP 3 Shred the turkey using two forks. Divide the spinach, avocado, strawberries and basil between plates and top with the turkey. Drizzle with the dressing to taste, then serve.

Costly heatwave Spain’s Prime Minister said “more than 500 people died” during the 10-day heatwave as Europe counts the cost of a record period of extreme temperatures.

Climate change protesters said the scorching weather should be a wakeup call for the continent.

“This has nothing to do with ideologies, but with a reality, with a climatic emergency that the planet is living through,” said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Speaking against a backdrop of charred trees and burnt ground in the hard-hit northeastern Zaragoza region, he urged people to exercise “extreme caution”.

Sanchez cited figures released by the Carlos III Health Institute, which estimates the number of heat-related fatalities based on the number of excess deaths compared to the average in previous years. Climate demonstrators triggered a lengthy tailback on Britain’s busiest motorway encircling London as they sought to highlight the need for greater action to reduce greenhouse gases responsible for global heating.

Members of the group Just Stop Oil climbed gantries over the M25 motorway, causing police to intervene.

“This is the moment when climate inaction is truly revealed in all its murderous glory for everyone to see: as an elite-driven death project that will extinguish all life if we let it,” the activist group said in a statement.

Three men including a French tourist died last week after suffering severe injuries during bull runs in eastern Spain, emergency services said. Two men, aged 50 and 46, died after being violently struck by bulls at a bull run held in a suburb of the eastern port city of Valencia, a local emergency services spokesman said.

A French tourist in his 60s who had been in intensive care since he was gored by a bull in a village near Alicante on July 8 died on Monday, the spokesman added.

Bull running festivals, where groups of people run in front of one or more halftonne fighting bulls, are a longstanding Spanish tradition with many towns holding such events each year.

The most famous is held in the northern city of Pamplona in July. The week-long San Fermin festival sees hundreds of daredevils race every morning with six fighting bulls along an 850-metre (2,800-foot) course from a holding pen to Pamplona’s bullring.

Five people were gored at the festival this year which ended on 14th July.

Sixteen people have died at Pamplona’s bull runs since 1911.

Method STEP 1 Mix the garlic, olive oil and lemon juice together in a reusable plastic container or bowl. Stir in all the spices, oregano, a large pinch of salt and the yogurt, then mix to make a paste. Tip in the chicken, tossing to coat, then cover and marinate for at least 1 hr, or chill overnight.

STEP 4 Drizzle the salad with the lemon juice and olive oil, then season with salt and toss everything together. Scatter the salad over a large platter or tip into a large serving bowl. Slice the chicken, then arrange it over the salad (or serve it on the side if you’re also cooking for vegetarians). Serve the salad with the tahini dressing on the side for drizzling over, along with toasted flatbreads or pittas for stuffing the chicken into and pickled chillies, if you like.

Benidorm prepares for Eurovision selection

Benidorm is once again preparing to host the hunt for Spain’s Eurovision Song Contest entry. The search will run between 29th January and 4th February. The plans were announced at a recent star-studded press conference in the popular Costa Blanca resort. Next year will see the search open to more performers with 16 places available.

The event is being produced by Spanish TV channel RTVE, which has secured international superstar Monica Naranjo as host and an expert judging panel.

Tourists at Alicante-Elche airport now have all the information they need available 24-hours a day thanks to a newly remodelled Tourist Info office in the arrivals hall. The office revamp cost more than 76,000 and is an important promotional tool for the whole Valencian Community. The information is available on touch screens allowing searches for resorts, towns and villages as well as beaches, golf courses, sightseeing and shopping.

Alcohol is actually good for you, as you age Moderate alcohol consumption is often thought to have some health benefits.

However, according to new research, alcohol only benefits older people.

The global study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation was published in health journal Lancet and looked at alcohol risk by global geographical region, age, sex and year, analysing 30 years of data on people aged between 15 and 95 across 204 countries.

The research found that while small quantities of alcohol was beneficial for people over 40, no amount of alcohol was good for younger people.

No amount of alcohol is healthy if you’re younger than 40, according to a new study. This is mostly due to alcohol-related deaths by auto accidents, injury and homicide.

However, if you’re 40 or older and without any underlying health conditions, the study found that small amounts of alcohol may reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes.

Senior author Emmanuela Gakidou, professor of health

metrics sciences at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, explained: “Those diseases just happen to be major causes of death in a good chunk of the world. So when you look at the cumulative health impact, particularly among older adults, it shows that a small amount is actually better for you than no

drinking. For all other causes, it’s harmful at all levels of consumption.”

Despite benefits against a few diseases, alcohol consumption doesn’t help many other illnesses like tuberculosis, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, liver disease, epilepsy, pancreatitis and many types of cancer.

The study analysed the risk of alcohol consumption on 22 health outcomes, including injuries, cardiovascular diseases

and cancers, using the 2020 Global Burden of Disease data.

Using these figures, researchers estimated how much alcohol a person can drink before they take on excess health risks. They found that the level of alcohol that could be consumed without increased risk to health went up throughout our lifetimes.

The research deemed a standard drink as a 100ml glass of red wine or a 375ml can or bottle of 3.5% beer.

For men aged 1539, the recommended amount of alcohol before “risking health loss” was 0.136 of a standard drink a day. For women the same age it was 0.273 of a standard drink.

Meanwhile, for those aged 40-64, the safe alcohol consumption levels were higher, ranging from around half a standard drink a day to nearly two drinks.

Among those aged 65 or older, the safe level was even higher at a little more than three standard drinks a day.

Though the level of safe alcohol consumption increased with age, the study also noted that health risks increased with each drink consumed.

Cheap hack to keep flies out of drinks Have you ever gone to have a refreshing drink in the garden only to find there’s a fly swimming around in it? Well, if you are someone who doesn’t like the idea of an insect taking a bath in your fruity cocktail, never fear we have a great solution for you.

Shoppers have been sharing a cheap way to protect your beverages from invasion, by using a trick posted by the wine brand Silver Bay Point back in 2019. People are swearing by this technique, which is super easy and could be possible to make without heading to the shop.

All you need is a paper cupcake case. There might be some lurking at the back of the cupboard or you can pick up packs for little more than a euro from most local supermarkets, including: Aldi, Lidl, Mecadona and Consum.

The hack is super easy to do and just requires a cupcake case, a straw and a small pair of scissors. Firstly, find the centre of the cupcake case and cut a tiny cross in the middle just big enough to fit the straw.

Then, place the cupcake case upside down over the top of your glass to create a lid,

pushing the straw through to create a fly-proof summer drink cover. If it’s a bit breezy out, you could use a little bit of tape or an elastic band to keep it in place.

You’ll want to pick the right sized cupcake case for your glass, or ditch your balloon gin glass for something more narrow, but it also works to help

cover up cans and bottles, too.

Alicante vodka wins silver medal at ‘Spirits World Cup’ ‘Malabusca Vodka’ from Alicante has gained global recognition at a recent internationally acclaimed awards event in Brussels.

The drink, conceived during the pandemic by four partners from Alicante, Elche and Santa Pola and produced in Alcoy, follows in the footsteps of the success achieved with the brand’s gin.

The luxury vodka, marketed under the brand name ‘Malabusca Vodka’, has won the Silver Medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2022, the equivalent of the world cup, for spirits.

The drink was created and developed in Alicante and follows in the footsteps of its older sister: a gin also recognized internationally having won several prestigious awards.

The newest creation of the Malabusca brand begins its journey in a spectacular fashion: a silver medal in what is perhaps the most important spirits competition in the world.

The company from Alicante, describes itself as small in proportions but big in dreams.

Malabusca CEO, César Ramírez Parralejo said that the company is focused on ‘the search for excellence in its products, within a universe that unifies the luxury of enjoyment with the

craftsmanship, beauty, avant-garde and uncompromising product quality.’

Parralejo explained that when considering expanding its range of products, there were two reasons they decided on a vodka.

of flat vodkas without much personality,’ he explained.

The second circumstance was the pandemic.

Parralejo revealed that when the pandemic hit they had the capacity to develop despite restrictions.

Eat bananas and salmon to counter salt intake Eating foods that are naturally high in potassium could help reduce the negative effects of salt in women’s diets, new research suggests.

The study found that potassium-rich diets were associated with lower blood pressure, particularly in women with a higher salt intake.

Researchers gave examples of foods like bananas, avocados and salmon as high potassium foods.

Researchers say their findings indicate potassium helps preserve heart health, but that women benefit more than men.

According to the study, the relationship between potassium and damage to the heart was the same regardless of salt intake, suggesting that potassium has other ways of protecting the heart on top of increasing sodium excretion in the urine.

Study author Professor Liffert Vogt of Amsterdam University Medical Centres, the Netherlands, said: “It is well known that high salt consumption is associated with elevated blood pressure and a raised risk of heart attacks and strokes. Health advice has focused on limiting salt intake but this is difficult to

achieve when our diets include processed foods. Potassium helps the body excrete more sodium in the urine. In our study, dietary potassium was linked with the greatest health gains in women.”

The study included 11,267 men and 13,696 women of the Epic-Norfolk study, which recruited 40 to 79-year-olds from general practices in Norfolk, UK, between 1993 and 1997.

Everyone completed a questionnaire on lifestyle habits, blood pressure was measured, and a urine sample was collected. Urinary sodium and potassium were used to estimate dietary intake.

Researchers analysed the link between potassium intake and blood pressure and found that potassium consumption (in grams per day) was associated with blood pressure in women.

They found that as intake of the mineral went up, blood pressure went down.

When the association was analysed according to salt intake, the relationship between potassium and blood pressure was only observed in women with high sodium intake.

During an average follow-up

of 19.5 years, 13,596 people were admitted to hospital or died due to cardiovascular disease.

Overall, they found that people who had the highest potassium intake had a 13% lower risk of cardiovascular events compared to those with the lowest intake.

When men and women were analysed separately, the risk reductions were 7% and 11%, respectively.

The amount of salt in the diet did not influence the relationship between potassium and cardiovascular events in men or women, the researchers found.

The findings were published in the European Heart Journal, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

Recommendations The NHS recommends that adults (aged 19 to 64) need 3,500mg of potassium a day, and should be able to get this from their daily diet.

High potassium foods include vegetables, fruit, nuts, beans, dairy products and fish.

For example, a 115 gram banana has 375mg of potassium, 154 grams of cooked salmon has 780mg, a 136 gram potato has 500mg, and one cup of milk has 375mg.

Hip fracture is one of the top 10 causes of disability in adults over the age of 65 in Spain. It is a serious injury that especially affects the elderly, being mainly associated with osteoporosis and falls.

However, there are other risk factors that influence the high incidence of hip fractures in older people, such as age-related decreased mobility and loss of visual and hearing ability. “The combination of these factors increases the possibility of suffering falls and trauma and presenting, therefore, a hip fracture of traumatic origin,” explains Dr. Maciej Tadeusz Was, hip specialist of the traumatology service of Quirónsalud Torrevieja.

With this worrying data, the medical sector has looked for ways to recover that well-being and quality of life despite getting older or having suffered an accident.

Hip arthroplasty is the most common procedure when other treatments have not had the desired effect.

What is arthroplasty or hip replacement?

Hip arthroplasty, also known as hip replacement, is a surgical lprocedure

The goal of a hip replacement is to relieve pain caused by deformity or fracture, improve mobility, and maintain the range of motion of the hip joint.

When to perform a hip arthroplasty?

It is important to differentiate between partial hip arthroplasty (partial hip replacement surgery or hemi arthroplasty) where only the head of the femur is replaced and total hip arthroplasty (total hip replacement surgery) where all parts of the joint are replaced with artificial prosthetic components.

Both are performed through an incision in the hip area and is therefore a surgery that requires regional anaesthesia in most situations.

In principle there are two indications for hip arthroplasty: femoral neck fracture or hip deformity.

In case of fracture, the implantation of hip prostheses depends on the type of femoral neck fracture and the general condition of the patient. It can be total or partial prosthesis, and on the other hand cemented or noncemented prosthesis. Generally, the total prosthesis is reserved for patients under 75 years of age and in these patients non-cemented prostheses are put. For people over 75 years of age, if they do not have hip osteoarthritis, partial prostheses can be put on and if

their bone quality is not good to resort to the cemented prosthesis.

In case of deformity “anarthroplasty is performed when we have a painful hip with damage to the cartilage, which does not improve with any of the different conservative therapeutic options we have”, details Dr. Maciej Was, specialist in hip surgery at Quirónsalud Torrevieja.

Osteoarthritis and other hip joint deformities can lead to pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.

Therefore, a total hip arthroplasty will be recommended to relieve pain, improve range of motion and improve quality of life.

I never imagined the pain at losing my husband; we’d been together forever. Every day was excruciatingly sad. We All Really Need to Slow Down

Choosing advice rather than a change in the law, one of the Spanish Government’s suggestions for dealing with the accelerating price of motor fuel was to suggest that we all slow down.

However, as recent evidence proves, the opposite has actually happened, and motorists are actually speeding more.

The DGT has carried out a speed surveillance campaign earlier this month, which is where the evidence that cars are going faster has come from, when compared to the same campaign from a year ago, when there was peace in Ukraine and if you paid for ten litres of fuel with a 20 euro note you would still get a fair bit of change back.

The campaign that demonstrates this has been carried out through 2,274 control points, 351 more than last year at this time. And as incidents on highways and motorways are increasing, 54.4% of the controls have been carried out on this type of road.

Of the 747,303 controlled vehicles, 42,202 were going faster than they should have. That is, 5.6%, when last year, with much cheaper fuel, they were 5.2%. And with regard to the type of road, 6.2% travelled very fast on conventional roads, while 5.2% travelled on dual carriageways or motorways.

There were even 5 of them that exceeded the maximum speed allowed by more than 80 km/h, which is considered a crime against road safety and ended with the offenders being brought to justice at court.

We remind you that fines for speeding are classified as serious or very serious offenses and are sanctioned with fines from 100 to 600 euro, and with the removal of between 2 and 6 points.

Not explaining the reason for the

increase in the number of speeding drivers, one explanation for those being caught could simply be that the driver didn’t know the maximum permitted speed on the road, as the results of a recent survey by Fundación LíneaDirecta revealed. It would appear fact that a number of drivers lack knowledge about speed limits in Spain.

The study ‘Speed, a silent scourge’ has shown, the vast majority ofdrivers on Spain’s roads are “not well aware” of the limits. It is true that there have recently been changes, but knowing this information is of vital importance when driving safely on our roads.

Incredibly, 94% of the drivers surveyed by Fundación LíneaDirecta did not know the speed limits currently in force well, which means that a scant six percent do know them, or at least claim they do.

The most confusing limits appear to be those that affect speed in the city: 89% of those surveyed failed to describe them accurately. It is true that these are the most complex (and even more so with the recent changes that have barely been completed for a year), but even 50% fail on interurban roads and up to 35% do not know the current ones on motorways.

The correct perception of speed limits is a factor of vital importance in driving since an incident in which speeding comes into play multiplies the chances of becoming fatal by seven.

The generic speed limits in Spain are quite clear: 120 km/h on motorways (unless they run within towns, in which the limit will be 80 km/h), 90 km/h on conventional roads (except in those with physical separation between the two lanes, in which case the limit MAY be increased to 100 km/h) and 50 km/h

in the city, although in the latter case with many roads where you cannot exceed 30 km/h (on roads with a single lane in each direction of traffic) and even 20 (on roads that have a single roadway or no pavement platform).

These generic limits may vary in those sections where a vertical sign reduces the maximum speed allowed (on a motorway we can have a 100 km/h zone if, for example, there is a dangerous curve). In addition, it must be remembered that since the last reform of the Traffic Law, the margin of 20 additional km/h that drivers had to overtake is no longer in force.

Exceeding the speed limits is severely punished and, depending on the excess registered by the DGT speedometers, it will be considered a minor, serious or very serious infraction. Thus, the fine will increase both in terms of points and money ... and can even lead to prison sentences if the conduct reaches the level of a crime against road safety.

The economic fines will range between 100 and 600 euro and the loss of points can vary between two or six (although there are also minor violations of the limits, which do not entail loss of points).

If the road limits are exceeded by more than 60 km/h in the city or 80 km/h on the motorway, it will be considered a crime against road safety. In this case, a judge will rule whether the punishment is prison sentences of between 3 and 6 months and withdrawal of the driver’s licence for between 1 and 4 years. Other penalties are also contemplated, such as work in favour of the community (with a duration of between 31 and 90 days) or even economic fines of between 6 and 12 months, at a fixed amount for each day.

There are two common questions that always arise in the summer months. The first is about flip-flops, and whether it is illegal to drive in them. To which the answer, which we have covered before, is that there is no specific law which deals with such items of footwear, it is advisable not to drive in them, as they can easily slip and become wedged in the pedals. It is also possible that you will get fined for wearing flip-flops if you are unable to prove you are in full

control of your vehicle, so inappropriate footwear can contribute to a sanction.

However, the second question, which we are going to deal with today, is whether you can be fined for driving shirtless.

Once again, the law does not strictly prohibit this practice, but as the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) explains, it is a very dangerous act and can be dangerous when driving, and therefore, can result in a fine.

The código de circulación, the laws relating to driving, explains in articles 3.1, 17.1 and 18.1 that any action that prevents safe driving for both the driver and the other occupants of the vehicle must be sanctioned. That is why both practices of inappropriate footwear and not wearing a shirt can result in a fine.

According to the DGT, driving without a shirt is dangerous, since it could cause injuries if the seat belt is activated, and can even result in sunburn. In addition to making driving difficult, it can be a major mishap for the driver in the event of a breakdown or accident.

This is also reported by the Guardia Civil on their Twitter account, where they point out, “Driving with flip-flops or without a shirt can condition your freedom of movement and affect safety....and do you know that it is punishable?”

The sanction can vary depending on the interpretation of the agent. If your actions are considered minor, and not very dangerous, you could face a fine of 80 euro, but if the officer considers that the risk being assumed is greater, you can face a fine of up to 200 euro and the withdrawal of three points on the driving licence.

In the same way that driving without a shirt can carry a penalty, doing it with flip-flops can have the same result.

Remember also that you must maintain the correct posture when driving, or when travelling as a passenger, which is why, although it may be tempting, putting your elbow out of the window, or if a vehicle occupant puts their feet up on the dashboard, which is an extremely stupid thing to do as the injuries in the event of a collision would be catastrophic, can also result in a fine.

Another week has disappeared into a puff of smoke and we find ourselves less than two weeks away from the greatest TV show on Earth kicking off once more.

Friday 5th will see the Premier League return for a few weeks before almost the entire league (yes, even Fulham and Bournemouth players) leg it down to Qatar to crowbar a World Cup into the middle of a season.

Yet, all we are really interested in at the moment (unless you are one of those weirdos who actually follow pre-season and care how a team does in one of their various publicity stunt tours of a region where they think they can generate even more money) are the transfers and, even more so, the rumours around them.

In the ‘these ones actually happened’ column is Djed Spence finally confirmed as a ‘club’ signing by Tottenham. How wanted do you feel, Djed? Antonio Conte made it clear that whilst he isn’t saying he doesn’t want the right back he doesn’t particular want him either.

El Bosquet fishing better than ever Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 19th of July we made the short trip to the El Bosquet complex. The weather was hot to say the least in the very high 30’s with little or no breeze which made for quite uncomfortable fishing.

The winner continuing his recent good run of form was the old master, Bill Reade. Drawn on peg 3 he fished bread on the pole across at about 15inches deep to take some decent carp for 36.44kg.

In second place was his good friend Bill Cannon. Bill was drawn on peg 20 and fished the method feeder with pellet for 29.10kg.

In third place was Mr Shipham aka,

Terry Brindley who once again put all his eggs in to one basket and fished paste on peg 1 to take carp for 23.46kg.

Other section winners were Tony McMillan with 12.50kg from peg 28 and Neil McBernie with 21.20kg from peg 36. The pairs event was won by Bill and Bill with 59.90kg.

Rods N Reels The following day we fished the same venue and as per usual the venue fished much better than the day before.

Winner on the day with a fantastic weight was Nick Bastock fishing shallow tight across with pellets he caught small carp constantly for 46.32kg from peg 28.

Southampton seem to be operating on a young person’s railcard type transfer strategy this summer as they’ve taken Sekou Mara of Bordeaux’s hands. Mara is a young striking prospect. As in, he’s a centreforward who is barely an adult but does seem quite good.
