Employment at record high the province of Alicante saw the creation of 8,243 new jobs in June as the region breaks its employment record again. the local labour market is still enjoying record figures with the recent acceleration of economic activity, and the start of the tourist
season in particular. the creation of 8,243 new jobs in the province in June places the total number of employed in the area at 713,834, which is a new historical maximum employment figure. the number of employed workers
already exceeds pre-pandemic figures - in June 2019 the number of employed was 676,262. the rate of progress of job creation has slowed down somewhat compared to previous months, since in April, coinciding with easter and the end of restrictions on foreign tourism, 10,235 jobs were created, and in May they were 9,156 new positions. Figures are lower than those registered in June of last year, in which Social Security accounted for 14,188 newly employed persons, although it must be taken into account that the figures for June 2021 followed a lengthy period of layoffs due to covid. in any case, the 713,834 current employees means that never before have there been so many people working in the province as today. on the registered unemployment
side, the number of unemployed registered in the offices of the Valencian employment service, labora, fell by 2,139 people, to stand at 141,283, which is 33,443 less than in the same month last year. the fact that registered unemployment fell less than the volume of employment created is due to the fact that not all the people who find work were registered with labora, since many unemployed people stop renewing their registration when benefits end. By sectors, as expected, the greatest reduction in unemployment occurred in services, including tourism and hospitality, which are the activities that grew the most. however, unemployment also fell in industry (-364) and, to a lesser extent, in construction (-78) and among the group of those seeking their first job
(-10). Permanent contracts once again outnumber temporary ones, despite the seasonal nature of many jobs at this time. According to data from the Ministry of labour, up to 56.4% of the 61,782 employment contracts signed in Alicante during the month of June were indefinite, which is 12 percent more than the national average. if the data is compared with that of June last year, the number of permanent contracts has multiplied by more than six, while temporary contracts have been reduced by half.
