One in ten vehicles uninsured

new figures released this week by traffic authorities have revealed that as many as one in ten vehicles on alicante province are uninsured. the figures reveal that around 130,496 vehicles are currently in the alicante province without being in possession of compulsory insurance. the figure represents 10% of the total vehicles in the province, and shows that the alicante province has the highest percentage total of uninsured vehicles in the Valencian Community.

in the Valencian Community there are currently 311,000 uninsured vehicles, of which more than 130,000 are in alicante (4.41% of the national total), 142,308 in Valencia (4.8 %) and 38,382 in Castellón (1.29%). the data, provided by the Government this week in a parliamentary response to pp deputies Óscar Gamazo and Jaime Mateo istúriz, corresponds to figures at January 31 of this year and put the total number of vehicles in Spain lacking

insurance at 2,957,530. the percentage of uninsured vehicles ranges between 9% and 11% across most Spanish provinces, but in cases such as Melilla it is as high as 23%. in the Valencian Community there has been a significant increase in recent months – for example, in april of last year according to a study by insurer línea directa, the figure did not exceed 260,000 vehicles, and now the figure is just over 50,000 higher. not having compulsory insurance carries a penalty fine of between 601 and 3,005 euros, and also makes it impossible for a vehicle to pass the technical Vehicle inspection (itV). provincial director of traffic antonio Jesús Fornes, estimates that “a significant number of those 130,000 vehicles are possibly those that have not been correctly deregistered” at a traffic headquarters. as for the possible reasons that lead drivers to not insure their cars, motorcycles, mopeds or trucks, Fornes stated that ‘factors to take into account’ are both ignorance of the mandatory nature of having insurance and “not requesting definitive cancellation in

traffic once the owner gets rid of a vehicle.” the provincial director of traffic also revealed that “soon the dGt will implement a series of measures aimed at eliminating from its records vehicles that are registered but are presumably not in circulation” which, in his opinion, “will contribute to lowering that figure.” on the other hand, he maintains that “citizens must continue to be informed about the regulations to be complied with.” regarding future regulations, Fornes

revealed that the dGt is working jointly with Unespa and the General directorate of insurance so that, soon, personal mobility vehicles (VMp) and electric scooters must also be insured on a mandatory basis.
