Carnaval returns to Torrevieja
torrevieja was filled with colour, lights and crowds of people on Sunday as the beloved ‘Carnaval’ returned for the first time after lockdown. despite initial uncertainty about whether the parade could or should go ahead, the desire by organisers and participants to return to normality won out and Sunday afternoon saw more than 500 people in spectacular costume dance their way through the
streets of the town in one of the area’s most popular annual spectacles. the music began pumping out of mobile speakers on Plaza de María asunción as the various themed groups made their way slowly down the main street, Calle Ramón Gallud. the event didn’t take place at all in 2021, but did happen in 2020 – a few short weeks before lockdown. Regular participants in Sunday’s
competition parade were delighted to be out in full costume once again, competing for a prize fund of almost €17,000 with awards for best costumes and best choreography. Painstaking hours spent making and bejewelling costumes, perfecting makeup and practicing dance steps finally came to fruition in front of delighted crowds. Each of the 28 ‘comparsas’ or troupes paused before a specially erected stand at Plaza de La Constitucion where an exhibition area was overlooked by judges. there was also an area for spectators with reduced mobility and an area where music, lights and noise were toned down to facilitate people on the autistic spectrum. there is another chance to enjoy the spectacle when the Carnaval returns – Saturday night, 26th February at 7pm for the ‘night parade’.
