Hottest July on earth… ever!

A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at Leipzig University has revealed alarming data suggesting that this July might be the hottest ever recorded on Earth ever, well at least in the past 120,000 years. The study con rms that the global temperature this month has exceeded all previous records dating back to 1880, marking it as the warmest July since modern climate records began.

According to the research led by Karsten Haustein, the average worldwide temperature for July 2023 has risen by a startling 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-Second Industrial Revolution levels. This indicates the rapid escalation of global warming, surpassing any temperature increases observed in recent history.

Moreover, July 2023 is predicted to be 0.2 degrees Celsius warmer than the previously hottest month ever recorded on Earth, July 2019. This highlights the accelerating pace of temperature rise and underscores the severity of the ongoing climate crisis.

Karsten Haustein, who led the research, expressed astonishment at the ndings, stating that this July’s temperatures might have been unparalleled in the last 120,000 years. He drew attention to an ancient era when the Arctic Circle was covered with forests, and creatures like hippopotamuses and elephants roamed what is now London.

As a result of this unprecedented heat, several regions across the globe have experienced extreme heatwaves, leading to devastating wild res in countries like Greece and Canada. North

America, Asia, and Europe have all faced the brunt of scorching temperatures and their associated consequences.

In response to the escalating climate emergency, Antonio Guterres, the United Nations General Secretary, made a solemn declaration. He announced that the planet has transitioned from the “era of global warming” to what he dubbed the “global boiling era.”

Guterres emphasized the pressing urgency of climate change, describing it as a terrifying reality that is just the beginning.

The alarming trend of extreme temperatures has been acutely felt in

various parts of the world. On 6th July, 2023, the planet experienced its hottest day ever recorded, with the average temperature surpassing 17 degrees Celsius. This broke the previous record set in August 2016, underscoring the relentless upward trajectory of global temperatures.

Spain bears the brunt

Spain has also su ered considerably from the heat, with the country enduring three heatwaves this summer alone. Extreme weather warnings continue to be issued on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol due to the scorching temperatures.

In the province of Alicante, part of the Costa Blanca, this July has witnessed the hottest nights in the last century, exacerbating the challenges posed by the relentless heatwave.

Additionally, the northern coasts of Spain have encountered an unusual phenomenon, with hundreds of Portuguese Man O’War specimens arriving due to the exceptionally warm waters in the Atlantic Ocean.

As the world grapples with the consequences of this unprecedented heatwave, scientists, policymakers, and citizens alike are confronted with the urgency of taking immediate and robust action to combat climate change. The ndings of the Leipzig University study serve as a stark reminder of the crisis at hand and the need for global cooperation in mitigating the adverse e ects of climate change.

Mil Palmeras housing plans draw criticism

The Friends of Sierra Escalona (ASE) association has vehemently opposed the proposed construction of 954 homes on an unspoilt stretch of the Orihuela Costa. The contentious plan, put forward by Orihuela Council, aims to create a 159,000 m2 urbanisation in Mil Palmeras. The project is now undergoing a 45-day period of public display and consultation.

The land under scrutiny is situated between the Dehesa de Campoamor urbanization to the north and Pilar de la Horadada to the south. Although the developer has accounted for the conditions imposed by the Environmental Assessment Commission two years ago, ASE President, Miguel Angel Pavon, criticised the proposed approval of the project, deeming it a “complete nonsense.”

Pavon strongly emphasised that the coastline is already overcrowded, and further development would be an irrational commitment to built-up areas. The Friends of Sierra Escalona association,

instead, plans to submit an alternative proposal to the Orihuela Council, advocating for the reclassi cation of the disputed sector as an “ecological corridor” connecting the protected area of the Sierra Escalona to the sea.

Should the development be approved, it is set to encompass a preserved green space covering over 32,000 m2. This green area aims to protect the local ora and fauna, including species like the endangered cathead jarilla.

Environmentalists have raised concerns about the potential threat to the delicate ecosystem that may arise from such large-scale construction.

In addition to the residential houses, the proposed development also includes plans for the establishment of primary and secondary schools within the area. This move comes in anticipation of an estimated 2,385 additional residents, highlighting the need for enhanced infrastructure and educational facilities to cater to the potential population in ux.

The public display and consultation period will play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of this project. Residents, activists, and stakeholders will have the opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns before the authorities make any nal decisions.

Local authorities will have to carefully consider the potential impact of the proposed development on the area’s environment, infrastructure, and overall quality of life for residents. Striking the right balance between growth and preservation will be key to ensuring sustainable and responsible development in the region.

As the consultation period unfolds, all eyes are on the Orihuela Council’s decision and the subsequent steps taken to address the concerns raised by the Friends of Sierra Escalona association. The fate of this unspoilt stretch of the Orihuela Costa hangs in the balance, with its future resting on the delicate interplay between developmental aspirations and environmental stewardship.

Dutch fugitive arrested in Orihuela Costa

More than 9 million tourists fly to Spain in June

Spain’s tourism sector has witnessed a remarkable surge in June 2023, with international air passenger arrivals reaching an all-time high of nearly 9.1 million. The data, disclosed by Spain’s o cial tourism website, Turespana, demonstrates an impressive 10% growth compared to the same month in the previous year.

Furthermore, Turespana’s statistics indicate that the total number of international passengers for the rst half of the year has reached a staggering 43 million, showcasing a substantial year-on-year growth of 24.3%.

Local boom

Civil Guard o cers have arrested a fugitive wanted by a Dutch court for the crimes of drug tra cking and the illicit arms trade. The fugitive was located through analysing images from various security cameras, with the support of the Local Police of Rojales. The Central Court of Instruction No. 3 of Madrid has ordered his entry into prison while his extradition procedure to the Netherlands begins.

The investigations that led to his arrest in Orihuela Costa began in March of this year when the Civil Guard and the Rojales Local Police received information that the 43-yearold was hiding in the Orihuela area or its surroundings.

After a detailed search of the

camera images, the o cers identi ed a woman living in Orihuela Costa as the partner of the fugitive. Based on this evidence, the agents went to the woman’s home, located in a wellknown urbanisation.

Once o cers were able to verify that the fugitive was inside the house, surveillance was set up and early in the morning, o cers saw the fugitive leaving the house carrying a suitcase, apparently with the intention of leaving the country. Taking advantage of the moment, they arrested the man without incident.

However, at the time of his capture, the fugitive tried to make it di cult to identify him by presenting a forged passport.

Héctor Gómez, the Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, expressed delight over the industry’s positive performance, stating, “We continue with some extraordinary data that demonstrate the growth potential of tourism in Spain, which translates into higher income and an increase in the number of workers in the tourism sector. For the remainder of the year, the forecasts are extraordinary.”

The surge in passenger arrivals was not limited to any particular country, as Spain experienced an overall increase in visitors from all major nations. Impressively, 55.4% of all passengers hailed from the European Union, showing a signi cant rise of +7.8%. Among the standout markets, Poland emerged as the leader with the highest increase, soaring by an impressive +37.0%. Portugal and Italy closely followed, boasting growth rates of +19.7% and +15.4% respectively.

The United Kingdom played a pivotal role in generating passenger arrivals in Spain, contributing a substantial

25.1% of the total. Notably, the Balearic and Canary Islands were the preferred destinations for a signi cant portion of UK-originating travellers, accounting for 28.0% and 20.6% of the total UK passengers, respectively.

However, passenger arrivals from Germany witnessed a slight decrease in June, making up 14.5% of the total with a minor drop of -0.3%. On the other hand, Italy displayed an impressive year-on-year growth of +15.4%, contributing 9.1% of the total passenger ow in June. France and the Netherlands also experienced notable expansions of +5.9% and +2.7% respectively, accounting for 7.5% and 4.8% of all passengers in June.

Among Spain’s autonomous communities, the Balearic Islands recorded the highest number of arrivals in June 2023, representing 22.8% of the total. Madrid and Catalonia followed closely with 20.4% and 20.0% of the total arrivals, respectively. The combined group of six autonomous communities experienced an impressive growth rate of +9.7%.

The Valencian Community stood out with the highest year-on-year growth at +14.5% among the top six communities. Madrid, in contrast, had the highest share of arrivals from traditional companies, accounting for 40.6% of such arrivals. Catalonia saw the most substantial growth compared to the same month in the previous year, with a remarkable +25.3% increase.

In terms of low-cost airline tra c, the Balearic Islands dominated with the highest share of arrivals at 26.3%, followed closely by Catalonia with 22.1%. The Valencian Community also experienced a substantial increase of +15.6% in low-cost airline arrivals.

The thriving tourism sector has not only brought economic bene ts but also contributed positively to all regions in Spain, bolstering the nation’s position as a top international destination. With the tourism forecast looking bright for the remainder of the year, Spain’s allure as a sought-after vacation spot remains stronger than ever.

Orihuela reinforces street cleaning on the coast

Orihuela City Council has taken on 29 unemployed people to reinforced public services in the coastal area for 89 days. In addition to covering holidays and sick leave, the 25 operators and 4 drivers were hired to join the workforce during the busiest summer months. The Town Hall has also signed a contract for a tractor, beach cleaner and necessary equipment to support the tasks of screening, levelling and cleaning beaches, as well as for the collection and transport of Posidonia sea grass.

The garden prunings and furniture collection service has been increased with the octopus truck support contract and the leasing of boxes for storage and transport. The Local Police is carrying out special monitoring of non-compliance with the Street Cleaning Ordinance, paying special attention to people who ditch rubbish and items without permission.

Four brigades of workers from the agricultural employment program have also been assigned to the coast and began a few weeks ago clearing the main areas and will continue until midSeptember.

The councillor for Street Cleaning, Rocio Ortuño, visited Orihuela Costa recently to see the work rst hand.

He said: “These reinforcements are destined to support services in these months of greatest in ux on our coast.”

The councillor explained that the investment amounts to 500,000 euros. He went on to address the need to acquire new collection vehicles, as well as waste containers to improve rubbish collection.

He added: “We are working tirelessly to provide the necessary budgetary investment in addition to improving the organisation of the public service itself, which was rescued for a provisional and temporary period of six months and which eleven years later still needs many improvements.”

Councillor Ortuno has called for patience and neighbourhood understanding, pointing out

that, after so many years, the service has become obsolete and needs an update. He has added that the situation he has inherited is not what he would have wanted and that this has led to the rst major decision he has had to adopt is to promote a budget modi cation le for a credit supplement to cover, among others, the expenses of the Consortium, the transfer and treatment plant, fuel supply bills and the anticipated penalty for the new Waste Law.

He added: “I wanted the rst credit modi cation to have been for that amount to hire more sta , acquire new vehicles, containers, litter bins, blowers, tank trucks and pressure washers or improve collection to avoid paying nes, among others.”

Record sea temperatures prolong extreme weather

Europe is experiencing an unprecedented stretch of extreme weather, and meteorologists warn that the impact might extend well into the autumn months due to record-high sea temperatures.

Last Monday, the Mediterranean Sea witnessed its highest-ever recorded sea surface temperature, surpassing the previous record set in 2003. Data from the Mediterranean Heat Waves Monitoring Service con rmed this historic development the following day.

The alarming rise in water temperatures poses signi cant risks to marine life, reminiscent of the heatwaves between 2015 and 2019 when numerous species, including molluscs and corals, su ered considerable impacts. However, the consequences of ocean warming are not limited to marine ecosystems. They are expected to leave a lasting mark on the region’s weather patterns, even as the summer comes to a close.

As we move into autumn and winter, the Mediterranean Sea will release the heat it has absorbed during the scorching summer months.

This process could potentially fuel powerful storms, supercharging weather systems across Europe. The released heat could trigger heavy rainfall, not only in southern Europe but also in other parts of the continent, as the Mediterranean acts as a signi cant source of heat and moisture.

Throughout this summer, Europe has been grappling with a series of extreme weather events. From devastating wild res and scorching heatwaves to sudden ash oods and erce hailstorms, the continent has been experiencing nature’s wrath. And unfortunately, these extreme weather occurrences might become more frequent in the future, exacerbated by the in uences of human-made climate change.

The climate divide between northern and southern Europe is becoming more pronounced, with the contrasting cooler climate of the north clashing with the escalating heat in the south. This discordance is expected to give rise to more intense weather patterns in the coming years.

Parque de las Naciones hosts the fiestas of San Emigdio

Around the northern hemisphere, high-pressure domes of heat have been building, as observed in the Mediterranean region. The jet stream, a high-altitude air current that plays a crucial role in regulating weather, has become increasingly erratic, allowing these heat domes to persist. Consequently, these immobile heat domes make it challenging for other weather systems to replace them, leading to prolonged heatwaves and extreme weather conditions.

Italy and much of southern Europe, along with parts of North Africa, have been enduring a prolonged heatwave driven by the movement of anticyclone Cerberus across the continent. Once these weather systems establish themselves, they become stubbornly persistent and challenging to dislodge.

Scientists and experts are closely monitoring the situation as the repercussions of record-breaking sea temperatures and the subsequent weather patterns could have far-reaching impacts on both ecosystems and human communities.

The Park of Nations will be the scene of the programming of events to be held from Thursday

3 to Sunday August 6, on the occasion of the festivities in honor of San Emigdio, co-patron saint of Torrevieja and protector against earthquakes.

The Department of Festivities of the City Council of Torrevieja has organized a program that will begin on August 3 with the inauguration of the “Barraca Popular” at 21:00 hours, followed by a great ra e of gifts and the performance of a music orchestra.

On Friday, 4th August, the

events will also begin at 21:00 hours, with a great ra e of gifts and a musical performance by a DJ, while on Saturday, 5th August, at 19:00 hours, there will be a children’s entertainment event and a free snack will be o ered to all the children attending. Afterwards, at 21:00, there will be another ra e of gifts and a musical performance from 22:30 onwards.

On Sunday, 6 August, at 20:00 hours, in the Chapel of San Emigdio, located inside the Park of Nations and also around it, a Eucharist will be celebrated in

honour of the co-patron saint of Torrevieja, followed by a solemn procession with the image of the saint accompanied by the band of the Musical Union Torrevejense (UMT). The route will run along San Policarpo street, Bilbao, Santísima Trinidad, Los Molinos, Plaza del Calvario, San Emigdio street, José Hurtado Romero “El Felisia” and, again, to San Policarpo street to return to the Hermitage of the Parque de las Naciones. After the procession, a reworks display will be set o to bring these popular festivities to an end.

Are you a rst-time investor tempted to dip your toe into investing?

This may seem a daunting prospect, particularly in the current period of market volatility and economic uncertainty, but it doesn’t need to be.

Recent research reveals savers have been deterred from investing by their perceived lack of knowledge, and the belief they don’t have enough money to invest.

Below is a list of the top investing myths:

Myth 1 - I need to be an expert

Unless it’s your day job, you’re not going to be spending hours of your day researching nancial markets, nor should you.

Myth 2 - I need to have a lot of money

This is one of the biggest myths when it comes

to investing. It might have been true in the past, but you can start investing with less than you think. An investment with Pru International starts from as little as £20,000

Myth 3 - It’s time-consuming

After the pandemic boom, investing became exciting. But it’s not supposed to be. Once you’ve worked out your investment strategy, you don’t need to check it daily or frequently.

Myth 4 - I can get rich quick

Plenty of beginner investors fall into the trap of thinking that they can make lots of money very quickly by betting on risky investments.

It has not been helped by some of the mega gains some investors made during the

pandemic, amid the tech stock boom. Don’t be fooled, though. The recent rout shows just how volatile markets can be and how important it is to keep a cool head.

Probably the biggest thing to be wary of as a rst time investor is get rich quick strategies. Getting rich slowly is very much the order of the day, and while taking risk is part and parcel of investing, just make sure it’s proportionate to your capacity to sustain losses.

Brilla Torrevieja Festival will have a violet contact point for priority attention for sexual or sexist violence

The Councillor for Equality and Women of the City of Torrevieja, Inmaculada Montesinos, accompanied by the Councillor for Social Welfare, Óscar Urtasun, and the mayor of Culture, Antonio Quesada, presented last week the Violet Point for priority attention in case of sexual or sexist violence or any kind of violence against women, which will be installed in all the concerts to be held at the Festival Brilla Torrevieja. A Violet Point that has been put in place with the collaboration of the body of Civil Protection and has been facilitated by the organizing team of Brilla Torrevieja.

Inmaculada Montesinos has reported that the aim of this municipal initiative is to have an easily identi able point where anyone who may be a victim of conduct that could be considered violence of a sexual or sexist nature can go.

It will also serve as a point of reference for the surroundings of a possible victim, a place where they can go if they witness or fear aggressive behaviour of this nature. In festive and leisure spaces, especially at night, attitudes that may threaten the safety and freedom of women have become normalised.

For the councillor for Women and Equality, it is important to

Waste management inspections begin in Torrevieja aimed at illegaldumping

make the violet point visible as a mechanism for prevention and awareness-raising in terms of sexual and sexist violence or any type of violence against women, and so it will have information material with basic advice on prevention and tips on chemical submission.

Action Protocol

The councillor for Culture, Antonio Quesada, informed that the action will be to accompany the possible victim until the mechanisms already protocolised in this area are articulated by 112. Sexual/ sexist aggression in a leisure environment can be initiated by a woman or people around her who warn of a possible aggression and/or event sta who detect or suspect an aggression.

Go to the violet point where there will be Civil Protection personnel in charge of activating the protocol. Likewise, a sound alarm will be handed out so that anyone who wants to can wear it during the event and activate it if they feel threatened at any time.

The Department of Equality is already providing training on the Protocol of action against sexual violence and other male violence in leisure spaces in the Valencia Region, and the

intention is to formalise the City Council’s adherence to this protocol. Civil Protection has also joined this training provided by the Regional Ministry.

The protocol highlights the increase in reported sexual crimes in Spain, there is a social alarm regarding the increase in reported sexual crimes in Spain, and this alarm is clearly justi ed. According to these data, in recent years there has been an increase in crimes against sexual freedom.

With a rise of close to 90% in a decade (2012-2021), the increase continues a trend of sharp increase that began, above all, from 2014. Compared with the gures for 2019 (20,343 cases registered), in the rst nine months of 2022 a total of 13,455 cases have been registered, which represents an increase of 30.1% between the two dates.

As far as the Valencian Community is concerned, unfortunately it must be said that it follows the same upward trend, and we occupy, according to the Ministry of the Interior’s 2021 Crimes Against Sexual Indemnity report, the fourth position with respect to the Autonomous Communities, and Valencia, the third position with respect to the Provinces of Spain.

The councillor for Urban Cleaning and Waste Management, María José Ruiz, reports that the cleaning service inspectors have already begun work, which perform the function of monitoring uncontrolled dumping throughout the municipality of Torrevieja, as well as monitoring them, reporting and graphically detailing the spills that are found, and then provide all the information to the City Council of Torrevieja to proceed to process the corresponding disciplinary proceedings.

María José Ruiz has indicated that these Acciona workers

have 10 electric scooters and a uniform that identi es them as environmental controllers. They work by means of an app installed on a mobile device, where they take the images and data necessary for the local authorities to impose sanctions. In addition, they will also collect the internal incidents of the cleaning service itself, which will allow the company to improve or correct the service.

This sta of environmental controllers is made up of 10 people who work continuously from 7:00 to 22:00 hours, in di erent shifts, and can also work night shifts to control the

incidents that occur during that day.

Finally, María José Ruiz stressed that this new team aims to strengthen control over the service itself and detect breaches by some companies and citizens on a daily basis, which are included in the Municipal Ordinance of Urban Waste, with infractions ranging from 50-750 euros.

The new service will be completed with new public awareness campaigns that are being developed to be launched soon and, together, we can have a cleaner Torrevieja.

The mayor of Callosa de Segura, Manuel Martínez, has submitted a request to the Ministry of Housing and Second Vice-Presidency of the Generalitat to consider paralyzed any procedure leading to the awarding of the 22 homes that are located in the Nieves building, located in Cervantes street in the town of Callosa de Segura.

The City Council, through the legal services of the administration, prepares the ling of a contentious administrative appeal in court

against the purchase of the 22 homes. The mayor justi es the application of this measure, “especially when the future judicial decision could be detrimental to future owners of it.”

The process began in September of last year when the Generalitat acquired the ats from Sareb and they became part of its public housing assets in the municipality to be used, mainly, for social rentals for people under 35 years of age, over 60, single-parent families, victims of gender violence and people with functional diversity.

The initiative, in September 2020 with the support of Mayor Martínez Sirvent, was totally rejected by the residents of the

building where the properties are located because they fear that access to public housing “degrades the environment and cause con icts.” The mayor thanked the Generalitat for its e ort and its commitment to the purchase of social housing in Callosa, but the city council also understands the residents of the block who have sent them their concern.

In this case, the declaration of exceptionality seeks to promote greater social heterogeneity in the municipality with the aim of counteracting the dynamics of urban segregation, the creation of ghettos and the concentration of poverty, favoring measures aimed at promoting a better balance of the population.

GBP

GBP / EUR UPDATE

The Bank of England are fully expected to follow the likes of the Fed and ECB and raise UK interest rates by another 25bps next week, despite the recent positive signs on moderating in ation. Much the same as in Europe (but not the US), economic data has pointed towards weakening activity, which could impact the BoE’s ability to raise rates much further, certainly if the UK falls into a recession. The latest poll from the good people at Reuters, expects the BoE’s terminal rate to peak at 5.75%, which would imply a further three 25bps hikes (including next week). Interestingly enough, a majority of the chancellor’s seven-member economic advisory council are becoming increasingly concerned that the BoE run the risk of raising rates too much over the coming months. They might do well to ignore that Reuters poll.

Whilst the UK may not have the highest debt to GDP ratio among developed nations, the cost of borrowing against government revenues has itself reached an alarming 10%, which is seriously impacting the government’s spending plans, a situation which will only deteriorate should the BoE continue to raise UK rates. Maybe that is part of the reason why the economic advisory council spoke out? In their latest update, the IMF also think that the UK will continue to see tepid growth throughout the rest of the year, with only Germany likely to grow at a slower pace among developed economies.

Among the data, the latest PMI readings (on Monday) dropped to 45 (from 46.5) for manufacturing and 51.5 (from 53.8) for services. That news also con rmed that the UK private sector is now growing at its slowest pace in six months, as orders decelerate amidst higher borrowing costs and persistent in ation.

The pound has had a fairly at week overall, with some snappy intraday moves. GBP/USD nally found some support after slipping all of the way from 1.3143 to under 1.2800, but any bounces so far has lacked any sustainability. Markets are probably waiting for next week’s BoE meeting, to see if they show any signs of wavering.

EURO

Much the same as in the US, the ECB raised the key European interest rates by another 0.25% yesterday lunchtime, moving their key deposit rate up to 3.75%

in the process. That was the ninth consecutive meeting during which the ECB have now raised rates, taking Euro area rates to a 23 year high. In her post-meeting conference, ECB head Christine Lagarde would not be drawn on whether the ECB would likely raise rates again at their next meeting in September, suggesting that ‘we might hike, or we might hold,’ but more on that below.

Clearly the big di erence between the ECB and Fed, is that while the ECB may be forced to pause any further rate hikes from here, the change of policy would not be because in ation has reached anywhere near ECB’s target level, but due to accelerating economic weakness among the region. The news this week only added to those worries, as the latest German IFO survey largely disappointed, with both the overall Business Climate and Current Assessment components missing estimates. The head of the IFO also suggested that Germany is still likely to be in a recession, with the IMF later warning that Germany will probably be the only G7 economy to su er a contraction during 2023. German growth and in ation data are both released a little later today.

The latest PMI readings hardly o ered any solace earlier in the week, where the constant theme of weakening economies was re ected throughout Europe. The recent slowdown in manufacturing has now morphed into a broader services slowdown, and suggests that those ongoing ECB rate hikes are materially impacting activity. Among the headlines, Germany’s Manufacturing slipped to 38.8, with the regional gure deteriorating to 42.7. Whilst the majority of services readings remained above the key 50 threshold, ALL major European countries missed against expectations. That news has only helped to increase those worries over an impending recession.

Having rallied all of the way up to a cycle high of 1.1275, EUR/USD has since been on a steady decline over the past 10 days, slipping back under 1.1000 for the rst time yesterday since the beginning of July. Markets now have increasing doubts as to the ECB’s ability to raise rates any further, which is feeding into a weaker Euro. GBP/EUR is edging back higher towards 1.1700, suggesting that the pound has taken a slight edge over the single currency of late.

It is a big week for data in Europe next week, with both the latest GDP and In ation data set for release.

Bumper weekend for Torrevieja health’s urgent care centres

The six continuous Points of Care of the Torrevieja health department attended a total of 1,780 emergencies over the last weekend of July.

The commitment of the Department’s management and professionals is to o er increasingly more decisive care in the Health Centres.

The Continuous Care Points (PAC) of the Torrevieja health department attended a total of 1,780 emergencies over the past weekend in July.

The healthcare strategy of the Management in the

summer months is focused on strengthening the urgent care of the entire Department and speci cally in the Primary Care Centres, with the opening 24 hours of the 6 PAC.

The Torrevieja Health Department promoted an awareness campaign to stress the importance of responsible use of emergency services in order to avoid unnecessary journeys for patients and to enable an immediate response to their medical care, especially at a time when the pressure of care in the area during the summer

period means that, at peak times, some municipalities in the area even triple the population.

The commitment of the Department’s management and professionals is to o er increasingly decisive care at the Health Centres. This important healthcare activity is also possible thanks to the recruitment e ort carried out by the Medical Directorate of Primary Care and the Regional Ministry of Health, which is also studying the possibility of further reinforcing some of the centres in the area.

Guardamar reopens beaches closed due to fecal contamination

Guardamar del Segura reopens the beaches closed due to fecal contamination this Thursday after some positive results in these indicators.

Some samples carried out by the General Directorate of Water of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition re ected positive results in fecal contamination, the indicators doubled the maximum allowed values, which ensured the existence of contamination of residual origin in, speci cally, the beaches of Tossals and Centro. For this reason, both beaches have remained closed with a red ag, pending the results of the samples carried out this Thursday.

This Friday afternoon, the mayor of Guardamar, José Luis Sáez , has announced the reopening of these two beaches after the results of the samples that have indicated values admitted to be able to use the bathroom in these areas. So for a few hours, Guardamar del Segura has reopened its beaches

Alicante agricultural body warns irrigation cuts willaffectcrops

ASAJA Alicante considers that the approval of 15 hm3 of the Tajo Segura transfer in July supposes “a real punishment for agriculture in the province”. The agrarian organization regrets that despite the fact that the situation remains at level 3, the amount of water transferred is less than what the technicians allow, which, according to what it indicates, once again shows that Minister Teresa Ribera “returns to condemn this land to misery by depriving us of more than 150 Hm3 since he held that position, with what this means losing wealth and opportunities”.

The president of ASAJA

Alicante, José Vicente Andreu, from Oriolan, adds that citrus fruits will be especially a ected by this decision, since it is now, during the months of July and August, when the fruit fattens to reach an optimum caliber for trade and its consumption.

José Vicente Andréu also points out that this decision by the Ministry of Ecological Transition once again jeopardizes the winter vegetable campaign that is already beginning to be prepared.

Also, remember the scarcity problem this summer, for example, with watermelon. “This year, we have found that many producers have

abandoned the summer campaign for fear of not having water for their crops to thrive. Watermelons are 90% water and in their nal phase they need a lot of water. If they lack water in that phase, everything is lost. For this reason, in November and December, farmers, faced with the insecurity of having water due to the decisions of Minister Teresa Ribera, did not buy the plants and did not schedule plantings as in previous years, and as production decreased, prices have skyrocketed, although They have not had an impact on the farmer, but on the pocket of the consumer”.

Work underway to repair La Siesta sportscourts

The courts will be nished in September and are located in Plaza de Europa, La Siesta, Los Altos, Torreblanca (next to the Ciudad del Mar public school) and two in La Torreta III.

The Councillor for Sports of the City Council of Torrevieja, Diana Box Alonso, reports that the works of comprehensive repair of the six blue sports courts (A + D) are at a good pace and may be completed within the planned period of 3 months, so that by mid-

September could be fully completed.

This contract, based on the Framework Agreement for the contracting of building and urbanisation works, has been awarded to the company ABALA INFRAESTRUCTURAS, S.L., with a 10% discount, with a total investment of 760,701.47 euros.

The six blue courts being fully repaired are located in Plaza de Europa, La Siesta urbanisation, Los Altos

urbanisation, Torreblanca (next to the Ciudad del Mar public school) and two in La Torreta III.

The repair work on these outdoor sports courts includes the renovation of the walls and perimeter fencing, the repair and repainting of the oors, the replacement of all the sports equipment (basketball goals, goals and nets) and the complete replacement of all the lighting with LED lights to achieve signi cant energy savings.

My partner’s parents called her saying they wanted to have a conversation. When she came home, she was upset. Apparently, they want to leave all of their Estate to their other child, and wanted her blessing. She heard them out and didn’t comment. Her sibling has always valued money more highly; to point of obsession. Possessions and riches have never been overly important to us; happiness being our main aim, and experiencing all the good there is in life. We have worked hard, and will have a

comfortable and happy retirement in later years. Why, my partners parents want to exclude my wife from their entire estate we cannot understand; except to say that they acknowledge that money is the only thing that will make their other child happy. We are sure they are trying to buy their child’s happiness.

Money, does not bring happiness. Material things may bring pleasure, but will be short-lived. Your longer letter tells me that your wife’s sibling has never found happiness, despite

blowing through thousands of pounds of their parents’ money over the years. This may never change, but if the parents bow to the pressure and sign over their estate to them, they will only be enabling their unfortunate behaviour. As to how your partner responds to her parents? Of course, they must do as they wish, but they have two children; and just because one child has been sensible with their money; why should they be penalised for that in preference to the irresponsible child, just to ease their own conscience? Likewise; what of their conscience if they deny the daughter who they plan to deprive?

Cataracts and sun damage

AS the hot summer continues, the experts from Specsavers Ópticas are advising everyone to take care and protect their eyes against damage from UV rays. UV radiation from the sun has been identi ed as a leading risk factor for developing cataracts , as well as being linked to a host of eye problems later in life.

Lisa James from Specsavers Ópticas Guardamar explains, ‘While cataracts is a common age-related eye condition, there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing them. These include quitting smoking, keeping chronic health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure under control, preventing eye injury by wearing protective eye wear and protecting your eyes from the sun. Eating a healthy diet, rich in antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, may also help prevent cataracts. As cataracts is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, it’s wise to correctly protect your eyes from the sun, especially in a sunny place like Spain.’

How to best protect your eyes from the sun this summer?

1. Wear sunglasses

Wear sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection whenever you go outside during the day, even if it is cloudy or overcast.

Look for sunglasses that have a label or sticker indicating they provide 100%

protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.

Unfortunately, not all sunglasses provide su cient protection from damaging UV rays, so make sure your sunglasses conform with agreed safety standards. Wearing sunglasses that do not meet the safety standards, especially those with dark lenses, is more damaging to the eyes than not wearing any at all. Dark lenses make the pupil dilate and let in more harmful rays, without the glasses the eyes would naturally squint to help keep the rays out.

If you are not sure whether your sunglasses are protecting you as they should, Specsavers Ópticas in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Guardamar and Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca o er a free UV checking service in store.

2. Choose the right sunglasses and complement with a hat

Sunglasses with large, wraparound frames that cover more of the eyes and the surrounding areas provide better protection from UV radiation than smaller frames. Polarised lenses can also reduce glare and provide better vision in bright sunlight.

A wide-brimmed hat can provide additional protection from UV radiation, particularly for the eyes and the skin around the eyes.

3. Avoid peak sunlight hours and seek shade where possible

Avoid being outdoors during peak sunlight hours, typically between 10 am and 2 pm, when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Seek shade under trees or other structures when outdoors during peak sunlight hours.

4. Be aware of re ective surfaces Water and sand can re ect UV radiation and increase your exposure, so you need to take extra care at the beach and the pool. Make sure children as well as adults are wearing sunglasses and hats to protect their eyes.

Chantelle Hayward from Specsavers Ópticas Calpe explains, ‘A cataract is a common eye condition in which the lens inside the eye loses its transparency. Symptoms include blurred, misty or cloudy vision, di culty seeing in dim or very bright light and nding bright lights uncomfortable to look at. You may also have double vision, see halos around bright lights and colours may look faded or have a yellow or brown tinge.

‘If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, book in for a comprehensive eye test to check the health of your eye. Your optometrist will assess your vision and overall eye health and if they think you have cataracts, they can refer you to an eye specialist for diagnosis and treatment.

‘In some cases, cataracts may not need to be treated immediately, particularly if they are not causing signi cant vision problems. In these

cases, your eye doctor may monitor your condition and recommend surgery when the cataracts start to a ect your vision.

‘Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an arti cial intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is a safe and

commonly performed procedure, with a high success rate and low risk of complications.’

Comprehensive eye tests using the latest technology are free at Specsavers Ópticas. Visit www.specsavers.es to nd your nearest store and book an eye test.

Kerry Katona reveals she’s gone from shoplifting food to being a millionaire thanks to OnlyFans but insists ‘money doesn’t make you happy’

Kerry Katona has revealed she was once so poor she was forced to shoplift for food and rely on charity before becoming a millionaire - but insisted ‘money doesn’t make you happy’.

The TV personality, 42, opened up about her past and admitted she had previously lost her fortune only to earn it back again thanks to racy website OnlyFans. She told The Matt Haycox

podcast: ‘I’ve been on every side of the coin you can think of, I went from having nothing to getting my clothes o a car boot sale with my nan’

Going on the rob with my mum, I remember being nine years of age and it was Christmas.

‘We just got moved from a refuge into a new house and it was Christmas morning and we had no decorations and the people from the refuge knocked on Christmas morning with a bin bag of second hand stu .’

She continued: ‘You know, corned beef, bread. I was eternally grateful’.

The former Atomic Kitten star then revealed she became a ‘millionaire over night’ before losing her wealth following her 2006 divorce from Brian McFadden.

She said: ‘Then I got the Iceland deal... then I had my own reality show, became a millionaire again’ only to lose it all over again.

‘I lost the lot, got a little bit back, went back into bankruptcy, become a

millionaire again. I don’t know anybody who has done that’.

The mother-of- ve went on: ‘I’m a grafted and I work and continue to work my a**e o because of those kids.’

‘The one thing I’ve learnt is, money doesn’t make you happy, it just gives you options.’

Earlier this month, Kerry revealed how much she earns from OnlyFans after making a success of herself on the platform.

And Kerry insists she has made more than a £1million by sharing revealing pictures and videos of herself on OnlyFans.

She told The Sun: ‘Yeah, I’ve made more than that. I can’t put a gure on it. I’m a billionaire!!’.

Go Fund Me page set up for Gary Dogget hit by a recklessdrunkdriver

My name is Chloe Doggett and I want to help raise funds for my dad who was hit by a reckless drunk driver!

Anyone that knows my dad, Gary Doggett would say... loyal, hardworking family man who sel essly goes above and beyond to help others. Always on the go and never sits down!

In the blink of an eye, his life has changed all because of a reckless, uninsured drunk driver!

On 30th June 2023, he was crushed between a car and the back of his van. His legs took the full impact. It was witnessed by his employees Stewart and Jak (my brother).

After a long 8 hours of surgery, my mum was asked into ICU to help wake up my dad. She was given no information regarding the surgery and walked in to nd that his right leg had been amputated below the knee, and his left leg was in a very bad way! She was merely told by the sta ... He is Alive!!!

When my dad nally came round, he was alone and had to nd out himself by looking down at the bed! No one was there to explain! The day after,

he had pain in his chest and shoulder, but we were told that all had been checked and it was just brusing from the impact. Day 3, dad underwent surgery again. When he woke, he could not breathe. They rushed him to x-ray and found he had air in his left lung, fractured ribs, and scapula! He had an emergency drain inserted into his lung!

After 13 days, he was transferred to Valencia Hospital (2 1/2 hours away from home). A further 2 fractured vertebrae in the lower back were found, 2 weeks after the accident!

28 days, mutiple scans, x-rays and 6 surgeries later, they have just realigned his foot and tibia - delayed due to a serious infection within the leg, leading to some esh and muscle being removed. During the latest surgery, signi cant damage was also found in the knee, meaning total reconstruction of the knee is needed.

It is estimated that the tibia will take approximately 12 months to heal before he can even look at having a prosthetic leg tted. Let alone the physiotherapy to use it.

He will need to have many more surgeries within this time including a number of skin grafts on both his stump and left leg.

My dad has to close down his Glass Curtains Business that he has been running since 2008. All because of a reckless, uninsured drunk driver!

The road to recovery will be long and tough for my dad. Leaving him with nancial worries on top of everything else! He will need medical equipment and the house will need major alterations before he can even come home. Due to the driver being uninsured, there will also be lawyer fees.

I ask you to please donate what ever you can to help ease this added stress for my dad! My one year old twins are learning to walk, and it breaks my heart that my strong, amazing dad has to one day learn to walk all over again! But I know with his unbelievable inner strength and determination, he will one day walk me down the aisle on my wedding day x If you would like to help raise funds for Gary visit: https://gofund.me/ad106a47

Elche CF match day experience

There is nothing quite like live sport and there is nothing quite like a home game in the Martinez Valero!

It’s match day. You awake full of anticipation and apprehension, fully prepared with your scarf, shirt and season ticket. The excitement builds as you arrive at the stadium to meet fellow franjiverde supporters. Access on match day is simple and there is free parking around the stadium for the early arrivers. You join the ag waving crowed and the infamous green wig wearing fans to welcome the team buses. Cheering as the green coach emblazoned with the Elche CF Crest rolls past, carrying the players and our hopes and dreams with it.

The bars around the base of the stadium are buzzing with football focused talk as the odd pre match cerveza or two are enjoyed! The Elche CF store is always busy with fans checking out new editions. Heading into the stadium, we pause to admire the majestic curves and the beautifully maintained grass where the players are warming up for the battle which lies ahead. Greeting your neighbouring season ticket holders, you reminisce together about matches already played in this 33,000 seater 1982 world cup venue. The club mascot, the Elche Fox, parades around the pitch and joins the team photo to the delight of the numerous younger fans, who give the club it’s well renowned family feel.

Then the magic starts. The rst notes of the famous Aromas Ilicitanos hymen are played and every single fan is on their feet with their scarves held proudly aloft. The whistle blows and the drums beat as the game begins.

Being a season ticket holder last season was not easy. Despite this, the atmosphere was fantastic with chants of Si Su Puede, Yes We Can! Faith was restored during the last six games as the new manager worked wonders, the highlight being a 1-0 win against the mighty Atletico Madrid This season it is all about pushing for promotion back to La Liga, which on paper and in the hearts of the fans is a very real prospect. The emotional Mediterranean’s excessive excitement and passion are all part of the enjoyment. Their goal celebrations are something to behold and their response to dubious referring decisions can be heard far and wide.

Many of you well know the feeling and bene t of being a season ticket holder, you can experience this once again here in Spain. This is the perfect time to become part of the Elche CF Footy Family. The season tickets are excellent value working out between 6€ and 10€ per game for the 21 xtures, plus other bene ts such as a discount in the club shop! Another massive advantage of becoming a season ticket holder this season is the memories that you’ll create as we push for promotion, and the knowledge that you’ll have your seat for when we are welcoming the La Liga teams to the Martinez Valero once again.

Elche CF are committed to helping non Spanish speakers become season ticket holders. From the 31st July you can reserve an appointment at the stadium to buy your ticket, or purchase it online on www.elchecf.es

An even easier option is to jump on the EuroTourGuide Coach and join the well established football family of Season Ticket Holders who have been supporting the Elche for 4 seasons. There is a special discounted rate for travel for Season Ticket Holders, lots of friendly banter on the bus between the supporters who are a mix of couples, singles, groups and di erent nationalities, who all love the Elche and their football.

Jessica and David from EuroTourGuide have been working with Elche CF since 2018 and this year are very proud to be featuring in the Season Ticket campaign. How many more kilometres can you drive after the empty tank light comes on?

After the empty tank light comes on, you may have 0 to 100 kilometers left. Fuel e ciency and remaining gas determine how far you can drive.

Have you ever wondered how far you can drive after the empty tank light comes on in your car? It’s a common question among drivers. In this blog post, we’ll explore the factors that determine the remaining range, discuss the consequences of running out of gas, and provide tips on how to extend your car’s range. Let’s dive in!

Determining the Remaining Range

Once the empty tank light illuminates, you may have anywhere from 0 to 100 kilometers of driving range left. However, this estimate can vary depending on several factors. Your car’s fuel e ciency, driving conditions, and the actual amount of fuel left in the tank all play a role in determining how far you can go. If you’re on the highway, it’s best to nd the nearest gas station promptly. In the city or close to a station, you may have a better chance of reaching it without running out of gas.

Causes of the Empty Tank Light

The empty tank light activates when the fuel level in the tank is critically low and needs re lling. Di erent cars have varying

thresholds, typically triggering the warning when there is approximately 30-60 liters of fuel remaining. It’s crucial to note that driving range signi cantly decreases once the light appears, making it advisable to refuel as soon as possible.

Tips to Extend Your Car’s Range

While the empty tank light indicates the need for immediate refueling, there are a few strategies to extend your car’s range in this situation. First, driving at a lower speed helps conserve fuel and allows you to travel further before refueling. Additionally, minimizing the use of unnecessary accessories such as air conditioning and heated seats reduces strain on the engine and fuel consumption. If your vehicle has a manual transmission, downshifting when descending can also help save fuel. Remember these tips to maximize your remaining range until you reach the nearest gas station.

Consequences of Running Out of Gas

Running out of gas can lead to signi cant inconveniences and potential risks. Your car will come to a halt, leaving you stranded and requiring assistance from a tow truck or friend. It can be time-consuming,

costly, and potentially dangerous. It’s always in your best interest to ensure you have enough gas in your tank to avoid these consequences.

Avoiding Running Out of Gas

To prevent running out of gas, it’s crucial to monitor your fuel gauge and re ll before it reaches a critically low level. However, if you nd yourself with an empty tank, there

are steps you can take to help reach the nearest gas station. Turn o unnecessary electronics to minimize power usage, drive at a lower speed to conserve fuel, and utilize downhill coasting whenever possible to preserve the remaining fuel.

Conclusion

While the average car can typically travel an additional 48 kilometers

after the empty tank light comes on, driving with an empty tank is not recommended. It can potentially damage the fuel pump and result in unnecessary expenses. Always aim to ll up your tank before it reaches a critically low level. By staying aware of your fuel level and implementing fuel-saving strategies, you can ensure a safe and uninterrupted journey.

‘Use it or Lose it’ - the Enslin Diambulo story

A typical week in the life of Enslin Diambulo would be four rounds of golf at the beautiful par 3 course in Elche with the Elche Golf Society and on the days he is not playing golf he will often be seen on a 25km cycle ride around the Los Montesinos area. Nothing remarkable about that you may think but there is much more to this story.

The rst part of Enslin’s story starts in the present day. Enslin will be 89 years old in a few months time. In the group of approximately 16 friends that make up the Elche Golf Society Enslin has the third lowest handicap. Most of the older members of the group have developed a very e ective method of ring the ball low and bouncing the ball into the greens, but Enslin has a di erent approach to the game. He stands on the tee, takes a quick glance at the hole, launches the ball high into the air and consistently lands the ball on the green. He regularly wins both the overall competition and the nearest the ag prize. I recently challenged him that he should be winning as he has had more years practising than the rest of us. His response was that that was highly unlikely as he only took up golf at the age of 81! Most of us have developed various ways to extract the ball from the hole which include using the putter to sh it out or a special tool on the end of the putter, but not Enslin. He will simply extend one of his long arms and without a creak or crack of joints pick the ball out of the hole. His strength, exibility and endurance is simply remarkable. But there is more…

For the second part of the Enslin story we need to go back to 1934 and his birth in a small village just outside

of Capetown in South Africa. Enslin was a young boy growing up during a very di cult period in South African history. He attended a rural school in Eastern Capetown with no sporting background but was soon identi ed as an extremely talented sportsman. His teachers said he possessed speed, strength and agility, however for a black South African boy growing up during the Apartheid years recognition of his talents was never going to be easy. Not to be deterred it was Enslin’s determination that saw him rst represent Western Province Rugby Union team and from there he went on to represent the South African Africans in the 1950s. The rst black player to represent the full Springboks team was Errol Tobias in 1981. It was during an appearance for the South African Africans that he was spotted by a talent scout from the English Rugby league team Bradford Northern. Enslin was o ered a professional contract in England which he duly accepted.

Enslin in Action for Bradford Northern

During his professional career he was described as an excellent ball carrier and proli c try scorer. He then moved to the Keighley Rugby League club where he nished his rugby career in the 1960s. His achievements as a rugby player were nally recognised in 2004 when he was awarded his full Springbok colours by the legendary ex-South African Captain Morne De Plessis.

Enslin appears in the book ‘112 Years of Sprinbok Tests and heroes where there is a half page pen picture of his career.

But that was not the end of his sporting career. When he nished

playing rugby his thirst for tness and competition resulted in him taking up karate. No surprise that it did not take long for him to become a black belt and end up coaching karate.

I am sure many of you will have heard the saying ‘Use it or lose it’ with regard to our health and tness. Enslin embodies that saying. His determination to

exercise regularly in order to enjoy an active lifestyle is a lesson for us all as we get older. What next for Enslin? Who knows. Maybe he will try his hand at skateboarding or waterskiing. I feel con dent he will still be winning golf matches well into his 90s.

Imanyo Golf Society “Anne Goldsmith Remembrance Rose Bowl”

This was the seventh year we have played for the Anne Goldsmith Rose Bowl; many thanks to Harry, son David and daughter Nicola for sponsoring the day in her name.

On Tuesday the 24th of July we shed the penultimate round of the Summer Series on the Rio Segura in Murcia town centre. The recent hot weather continues and after a nice cool start to the day the temperatures once again rose into the high thirties. Eleven brave souls turned out to do combat not only with the heat but also the moody river.

Winner on the day was the venue specialist Richard King. Drawn once again on his favourite peg 2, just after the rst set of reeds he was in buoyant mood whilst setting his gear up. Richards enthusiasm was starting to wane, when at 1.30pm all he had to show for his e orts was a very small carp . Normal service was resumed

for the last two hours and shing the method feeder with orange wafters he caught some decent carp and tipped the scales at 15.54kg.

In second place was the raider from across the border in Andalucia, the Burnley maggot master, Barry Smith, Drawn on the end peg 11 towards the Crystal bridge, barry shed maggot on the feeder and caught 28 carp and a gold sh for 14.62kg.

In third place was Gary Plant who was drawn on peg 1 at the bottom of the ramp just before the reeds. Gary shed the method feeder and narrowly secured third place with 11.66kg. Rod N Reels.

The following day we shed the Embalse De Pedrera or Torremendo as it is known to the locals. Access to

the lake can be very tricky but the track was in decent condition and was negotiated without any mishaps.

Upon our arrival it became clear that the water was dropping at quite a considerable rate. Only 4 anglers had turned up and out of fairness to all we initially decided the sh the left hand side of the match point. This turned out to be a very bad move.

We were able to drive to the back of all of our pegs but our enthusiasm was very short lived when we started to approach the waters edge to set our tackle up. The receding water had turned the bank into slow sinking mud and within seconds we were up to our ankles in mud. After a quick change of plans we then decided to place all four of us on the rst left hand point.

Pegging was tight to say the least but at least we were mud free for most of the match.

Winner on the day was myself Ian Brown. I was drawn on the left hand side of the point on peg 1 and after two hours of not having a bite on the feeder it became clear to me that I had to change tactics. I decided to sh initially out of boredom for bleak with maggot on the whip. I began to catch at a steady rate some decent bleak but as Graham Patterson on the next peg had already caught 4 carp for me it was just a bit of fun. I did do another hour on the feeder but again never had a bite. At the weigh in nobody was more surprised than me to see the amount of bleak I had caught in the 3 hours that I had shed for them and they tipped

the scales at 4.36kg. Unbelievably this was enough to win the match.

In second place was Nick Bastock who was drawn on the end of the point. Nick shed the method feeder with Red Robbin pellets and caught 1 barbel and 3 carp for 3.86kg

In third place was Graham Patterson who we must admit all thought had won the match . His 5 carp were only small and he weighed 3.52kg.

In last place and worth a mention if only for his entertainment value was Richard” I’ve taken my hearing aids out” Wood. He eventually caught a small carp for .500kg but provided some Fred Karno Circus like shing moments that kept our spirits up. Ian Brown www. abbeyangling.es
