PUBLISHER’S NOTE OUR BEAUTY EXPERTS HAVE THEIR SAY… Each year, the magazine hosts a very special product award called the “I Recommend” Beauty Awards. We ask our readers, Canada’s Beauty Experts, which products they like to recommend to their clients and why in 20 different product categories.

What makes these product awards so unique is that we don’t prompt the BAs with any branding or product suggestions. We simply ask them which product they recommend in each category and then tell us why they recommend that product to their customer.

The beauty vendors get very excited when they learn their product has been chosen more than any other product in the category. The brand can promote the winning product for one full year after the win. So be sure to have a look at this year’s winners starting on page 25 in this issue.

And we have already started working on our special 50th Anniversary issue coming out this fall. In the issue, we will be celebrating 50 years of beauty in Canada. This magazine was launched in September 1972 by Ed Bodner and it’s still going strong today, 50 years later. One of the features in the issue will be a 50-year timeline of the major events, product launches and corporate accomplishments since 1972. It will be a walk through time looking at all the beauty industry has accomplished over the years. You will read things like in 1996, L’Oreal purchased Maybelline and in 1997 they bought Ombrelle, busy time for acquisitions! You will also find out when Clé de Peau was launched, when Lise Watier was formed and much more.

And, as of today we will be hosting the Beauty’s Best Awards live and in-person for the first time in three years! We are very excited to be back again at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. We will be celebrating our 20th anniversary of these awards as well that evening. This show will be a little bittersweet as it will be the last time I will be hosting the event as I plan to retire at the end of this year. So lots going on, an exciting six months ahead, hope you will all enjoy the ride. Wishing you a successful summer selling season and continued good health.

Th e Wo r l d of Beauty The beauty industry's leading trade show returns to host over 2,700 exhibitors from 70 countries VISITORS FROM OVER 140 COUNTRIES gathered for the 53rd edition of Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna on May 2, 2022. More than 2,700 exhibitors from 70 countries presented new innovation for the coming year, thanks to the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the ITA (Italian Trade Agency.)

"We are really proud of the results of the exhibition: Cosmoprof has once again confirmed its role as a reference event for the global cosmetics industry," said Gianpiero Calzolari, President of Bologna Fiere.

The event was a huge success in bringing industry experts together to discuss the new up-and-coming trends that are set to revolutionize the industry. Live demonstrations and masterclasses through Cosmotalks, an educational platform set up during the event, elevated the overall learning and community of the event.

Even though some restrictions are still in place, having exhibitors and buyers meet after two years was the highlight of the event.

Cosmoprof also has plans in place to return to pre-pandemic levels this year.

"By 2021, the Italian cosmetics sector had shown its ability to react, and by 2022, despite the uncertainties of the international scenario, it is estimated to return to pre-crisis levels with the turnover that will return to exceed 12 billion euros," commented Renato Ancorotti, President of Cosmetics Italia.

Spotted at spring/summer ’22 shows for Drome, Bora Aksu and Anna Sui, and seen on celebs like Selena Gomez, the soft and ethereal look is ideal for warm weather. “Coral and peachy tones are very complimentary to that ‘golden-hour skin glow’ that’s so on trend,” says Toronto-based makeup artist Kim Creton. Start by applying an eyeshadow primer.

“I can’t stress the importance of primer enough,” says Creton.

“Not only will it help the eyeshadow stay on for hours, but it helps make the colour pop, too.”

Next, apply your chosen peach shadow. Creton prefers cream formulas that can be applied with the fingers, which helps the product melt onto the skin and makes it effortless to blend upwards onto the outer brow bone. If you’re using a powder, she recommends using a fluffy crease brush to blend the colour outwards and upwards.

which makes the all-over glitter trend perfect for the season. As seen on spring/summer ’22 runways at Blumarine, Collina Strada and Osman, the look is utterly ethereal and attentiongrabbing. “Glitter reflects and moves light, bringing immediate attention to wherever it’s applied,” says Toronto-based makeup artist Caroline Levin. If you want to achieve a simple all-over glitter look at home, Levin recommends using a liquid, gel or cream formula infused with glitter.

Another great way to get the look is to apply loose glitter on top of a cream or primer, which will help keep the glitter on. The process can get messy, which is why Levin suggests disposable applicators. “A clean, disposable mascara wand is also a great tool to pick up any glitter fallout without destroying the makeup you’re already wearing.”

ONE OF THE MOST SOOTHING REMEDIES I often turn to after

a breakup or a tragic episode of Euphoria (anything that brings on a good cry) is the simple act of pressing an icycold washcloth against my swollen eye area. Not only does it calm my emotions, it also instantly helps take down some of the obvious inflammation without further stressing out my skin.

When I recently completed a four-week bootcamp with esthetician and facialist Vee Mistry of Toronto’s Skin by Vee using her much-ravedabout Gua Sha Cryo Sticks, my soothing ritual was taken to a whole new level.

Cryotherapy is redefining cool, inspiring a whole wave of Tik Tok trends (like dunking your face into a bowl of ice) and skincare products, from icy-feeling cleansers to cooling masks. Dermatologically speaking, cryotherapy is a procedure that uses liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -176 °C to destroy benign and cancerous skin cells, says Vancouver-based skin care physician Dr. Shehla Ebrahim.

“The scientific premise is to remove heat from a biological 22

tissue by subjecting it to cold temperatures sufficient enough to cause cell death.”

You might have also heard of cryotherapy facials, where vaporized liquid nitrogen is used to supposedly brighten and tighten skin. But these procedures aren’t without risks. Dr. Ebrahim adds that there’s no proven long-term benefits to the ice bowl trend on social media. “It may give the illusion of wrinkle reduction, but any benefit is short-lived,” she says. Dès l’âge de 20 ans, on observe sur son minois une première perte de fermeté.

Produisant déjà un peu moins d’élastine et de collagène, l’épiderme se relâche légèrement.

Finie, la peau de bébé !

Entre 30 et 35 ans, on voit apparaître les premières ridules et rides d’expression. Les plis s’emparent petit à petit du pourtour des yeux et des lèvres.

La quarantaine carillonne et les reliefs autrefois si fièrement juchés haut perdent en volume, nos jolies joues commencent à s’affaisser et à se creuser. Grand coupable de ces outrages : le ralentissement du renouvellement cellulaire au sein des tissus cutanés.

WHEN YOU THINK OF A CACTUS,

your mind probably conjures up an image of a prickly succulent standing strong in the dry, sandy desert. Cacti are known to be able to survive the harshest of desert conditions (which is why they’re also known to make easy-to-take-care-of houseplants). So, it makes sense that cactus water is becoming more and more popular in the beauty world. Brands like Freck, Youth to the People and CoverGirl have featured cactus extract as a superstar ingredient in recent releases.

Cactus fruit extract contains vitamin E and amino acids, and it tends to have a cooling and hydrating effect on skin (which makes it ideal for summertime heat).

Skincare brand Boscia uses water from the Queen of the Night cactus, which only blooms between dusk and dawn during one night of the year, says Sarah Inomata, assistant director of international sales at Boscia. The succulent plant can be found in Mexico and adapts to drastic climate

conditions, rebounding from dramatic dehydration. “Surviving and thriving in one of the driest regions in Mexico, the Queen of the Night’s ability to absorb and retain water makes it the perfect moisturizing ingredient, as it provides the same benefit to the skin,” says Inomata.

“Cactus water—particularly that of the prickly pear cactus—contains natural electrolytes and antioxidants,” says dermatologist Dr. Lisa Kellett of Toronto’s DLK on Avenue. That means it can help skin retain water while helping to protect against free radicals and environmental stressors.

While Dr. Kellett says more evidencebased medicine is needed to conclude which skin types would benefit most from cactus water, Boscia recommends its moisturizer for combination and oily skin, since it’s so lightweight and absorbs quickly. And it’s easy to add to your routine: Simply apply a serum or moisturizer infused with cactus water in the AM and/or PM and enjoy the boost of refreshing hydration.
