WE’RE ALMOST THERE! After two years of living with the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems that the end may be in sight. As I write this, many restrictions are being lifted, case numbers and hospitalizations are coming down, and things are starting to open up again. What an unimaginable ride this has been! While we all want to move towards some sort of normality, if that is even possible, I think we can all agree that what we once perceived as normal has evolved and will continue to evolve. Over the past two years, online shopping has increased from 30% pre-COVID to 65% and climbing with studies showing half of the world’s population to be shopping online by the end of 2022 – spending a whopping 3 billion dollars. Many believe that technology has progressed much faster during the pandemic, saying that in the past two years it has jumped ahead the equivalent of five years. Advancements in AI (Artificial Intelligence) are moving faster that anyone imagined and are on trend to continue that upward curve. All of this rapid change means we will all have to do things a little differently in the future and of course, that future starts right now. Due to the bombardment of social media, fake news and online reviews, keeping loyal customers will become a new challenge. You will need to try to stay on top of trends and work all that much harder to maintain your customer loyalty. Retails brick and mortar stores are not going anywhere soon, but many of you will be working a lot harder to get your clients back into the store on a regular basis. Get innovative, stay on top of emerging trends in technology, go that extra mile for your customer and provide the best sales experience that will keep them choosing an in-store experience over one online. The good news is that all indications point to this being over soon. We will learn to live with COVID as it becomes part of our future. Keep that smile on your face and that enthusiasm up front and centre, and things will look great going forward. AFTER WHAT FEELS LIKE another extra-long winter, spring's super bright palette delivers the mood-booster we didn't know we needed. Pinterest reported a 115 per cent increase in searches for “galaxy nail art” in 2021, and predicts it will keep going strong through 2022. “I think we’ll start to lean more into organic, impressionistic, artful nail looks this year,” says Toronto-based nail artist and Essie global lead educator Rita Remark. “Galaxy nail art is super striking and easy to achieve.” Here’s a clever hack: Use a cut-up cosmetic wedge and tweezers to sponge your chosen galaxy colours overtop of a dark nail base (like black or navy blue). “Create a wavy line pattern that’s different across each nail,” she suggests. “And if you’re not a skilled nail artist, you can dab a glitter polish in some areas across each nail to create the stars.” — Lora Grady

natural hair textures, space buns are back — just ask Lizzo, Yara Shahidi or Tracee Ellis Ross. Online searches for “space buns natural hair” have skyrocketed over the past year. “The Black power movement has made it more popular,” says Toronto-based celebrity hairstylist Justin German. “People are growing out and embracing their natural hair.” If you want to achieve the look at home, it’s pretty simple — all you need are some hair elastics (and maybe bobby pins) and a few key products. Start by applying a leave-in conditioner. Next, split your hair down the centre, creating two sections, and use a gel to smooth hair into pig tails, says German. Then just wrap each pigtail into a bun or round afro puff. “You want to leave your natural texture showing,” he adds. If you want to add extra volume, use a clipin puff under your hair. — Lora Grady

Earth Day gives us a moment to reflect on how we can make sustainable changes to help save the environment. After all, it’s no secret that the beauty industry has a plastic problem: A report from Zero Waste Week found that more than 120 billion units of cosmetics packaging are produced globally each year. And if our wasteful ways continue, researchers estimate that by 2050, roughly 12,000 metric tons of plastic waste will be in landfills or the natural environment. Here’s the good news: Research shows that refillable cosmetics containers could eliminate up to 70% of carbon emissions associated with the beauty industry. And as beauty consumers show increasing interest in reducing their use of plastics in everyday life, brands are rolling out new innovative, eco-friendly packaging all the time. American market-research firm Mintel reported that the reusable packaging market for beauty and personal care products grew by about 65% from 2020 to 2021. Iconic skincare and makeup brands, including The Body Shop, Glow Recipe, Dior, Hermes and Charlotte Tilbury, have all recently launched refillable packaging for fan favourites. Refillable beauty isn’t a new trend, though — Rouge Dior lipstick was originally sold in refillable versions in the 1950s. The Body Shop also sold refills when it first opened in 1976 out of sheer necessity (founder Anita Roddick couldn’t afford to buy new bottles).

Now, The Body Shop is bringing refills back with options for select shampoos, conditioners, hand washes and shower gels — this time, out of the need to protect the environment. “By the end of 2022, 79% of store locations across Canada will offer refills,” says Hilary Lloyd, The Body’s Shop’s vice president of marketing and values for North America. “By 2025, we will have zero waste packaging, meaning 100% of our packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable.” She points out that by switching to refills, The Body Shop customers could prevent up to 32 plastic bottles per customer from going to waste each year, while helping to prevent up to 2,200 g of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. So far, Lloyd says, the consumer response has been overwhelming. “In some store locations, over 50 per cent of customers are choosing refill over our standard pack.” Beauty consumers unquestionably play a huge role in the demand for more sustainable packaging options. Glow Recipe co-founder Sarah Lee says the community is a big part of why they decided to venture into refillable packaging; she and her co-founder, Christine Chang, received countless messages from customers requesting it. That’s why the new Plum Plump Hyaluronic Cream comes in a refillable version that pops neatly into the original glass jar. “We’re constantly working to reduce our environmental footprint and

Glow Recipe is also partnered with TerraCycle, a recycling company that helps beauty consumers recycle waste that’s typically unrecyclable through the traditional means. Their partnerships with companies like Glow Recipe and Burt’s Bees allow individuals and organizations to ship beauty waste (used jars, tubes, etc.) to TerraCycle for free, where it can be processed and used to make new recycled items. “The old adage of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ still rings true when you need to purchase new beauty products,” says Alex Payne, public relations manager for TerraCycle. The best way to reduce your carbon footprint is by forgoing new products altogether, he says, but when you must buy them, the reuse option — purchasing refillable beauty products — is the next best thing: “Removing packaging from the equation with each subsequent purchase translates to huge savings in resources, carbon emissions and landfill space.” There’s a lot more that can be done when it comes to supporting the environment and cutting down on waste, says Lee, from using sustainable packaging materials like recyclable glass or post-consumer recycled plastic, ethically sourcing ingredients or partnering with organizations like TerraCycle to properly recycle products. Ultimately, “it’s about being mindful and doing your best. Sustainability is a journey that we believe we can all take together, day by day.”

RETINOL HAS LONG BEEN touted

as one of the best multi-tasking skincare solutions, since it takes on wrinkles, fine lines and blemishes. But if you’ve been using it for a while and you’re looking for something stronger, it typically requires a visit to the dermatologist. That’s why more skincare brands are using retinaldehyde, or retinal, in night creams and serums. It’s a precursor to tretinoin, which is stronger than retinol and requires a prescription. “Topical retinol, or vitamin A, and its derivatives like retinaldehyde are among the most effective substances in over-the-counter cosmeceuticals when it comes to slowing the skin-aging process,” says Dr. Jason Rivers, medical director at Vancouver’s Pacific Derm and clinical professor in the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science at the University of British Columbia. The short-term benefits include improved cell renewal, he says, and over time, you’ll notice improved skin texture, a reduction in fine lines and less visible pores. “Retinaldehyde is like the fountain of youth,” says Maxine Ryan, senior

trainer at Avène’s parent company Pierre Fabre. The first brand in the world to use the ingredient, Avène has been using retinaldehyde in its products since 1994. As skin ages, Ryan says, the amount of collagen and elastin we produce also decreases, causing fine lines and wrinkles. “Retinaldehyde activates the synthesis of collagen and elastin, increasing skin’s firmness.” Most skin types can benefit from retinaldehyde, says Dr. Rivers (though it’s important to note that pregnant women should avoid retinoids altogether). “Because it’s generally better tolerated than tretinoin, people with sensitive skin can try it.” Still, he recommends an acclimatization period. Ryan adds that it’s normal to experience some sensitivity and slight flaking. Both she and Dr. Rivers recommend using the cream two or three times a week at first to allow your skin to adjust. Dr. Rivers also recommends avoiding alcohol-based toners or high-concentration chemical peels while using retinaldehyde. The sun can decrease the efficacy of retinoids, so use it at night and don’t forget the SPF in the morning.
