New legislation hopes to enable more adoptions in Ohio

COLUMBUS - Recently introduced legislation in the Ohio House addresses some of the challenges and complexities that can turn the prospect of adoption into a possibly insurmountable burden for potential adoptive parents. The ability to adopt children is a very important part of our society that.

I feel strongly about. Not only does adoption provide additional opportunities for children to grow up in safe and supportive environments with parents who are eager to take care of them, but it also provides an alternative to women who do not wish to raise a child and gives those children the right to life, a right that all children deserve.

Proper oversight is of course important so as to avoid adopted children from ending up in the wrong hands, but our goal should always be to encourage, not deter, adoption, while still upholding effective safeguards. House Bill 307 accomplishes this, which is why I am proud to put my support behind this reform.

Newcomerstown to kick off bicentennial with a bang

NEWCOMERSTOWN - The Newcomerstown Bicentennial Committee has announced plans for “Newcomerstown First Night”, a family friendly community New Year’s Eve celebration scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. and last until midnight. The fireworks display will be visible from most locations on downtown streets.

There will be a free drawing for a $50 gift certificate at midnight and a door prize drawing at participating locations at midnight with winners being notified.

First Night is a family-friendly, alcohol free community celebration.

There will be an entertainment at six locations throughout the downtown area of Newcomerstown. Families may park at one location and walk to the various locations to see several performances. Each 20 minute performance will be repeated six times during the evening.

Entertainment locations will be the St. Paul Lutheran Church, East Elementary School, First Baptist Church, Olde Main Street Museum, Newcomerstown Senior Center and the Laborer’s Local Union #134.

Scheduled entertainment will be “Let the Music Sound”, a performance featuring the sound of the pipe organ at St. Paul Lutheran Church, “Act Out” will present a puppet and marionette show telling fairy tales in a whole new and entertaining way. “Native America Music” will be at the First Baptist Church and performed by T.J. Marlatt. At the Olde Main Street Museum will be “Trains of Newcomerstown”, with Dave Adair telling the history of the types of trains that have passed thru Newcomerstown.

At the senior center will be Dennis Regling’s Family Magic Show which is guaranteed entertainment for kids of all ages. At the Laborer’s Local Union #134 will be games, a DJ and snacks available. DJ Chuck Eicholtz of Music Explosion will be spinning the discs from 9 till midnight.

The Newcomerstown Bicentennial Committee invites everyone to come out and enjoy the festivities as the community kicks off the Bicentennial year.

COSHOCTON – Eat your way across town and be inspired by local art at the first Art with Bites, a 2.3 mile gallery hop bringing the Coshocton art community together like never before.

A weekend between two Wednesday holidays can be challenging, so Coshocton’s art organizations have banded together to create a gallery hop where you can eat a four-course meal across Coshocton’s art galleries and be inspired by the work of locally artists.

The event will be Saturday, Dec. 28 and will start at 2 p.m. at The Frame Shop, located at 1030 Chestnut Street at the five corner traffic light. Eckelberry family wins lighting contest three consecutive years WEST LAFAYETTE – During the first week of November, Morgan Eckelberry can be seen climbing up on his roof hanging thousands of twinkling Christmas lights and singing Christmas carols at the top of his lungs. This is Eckelberry’s favorite time of year, and he helps spread some Christmas cheer to his neighbors and other members of the West Lafayette community through decorating his home for the holiday season.

“We try to change it up each year to make it a little bit different than the last year,” said Eckelberry. “I get a lot of joy and pleasure out of doing it.”

Approximately 6,000 to 7,000 Christmas lights grace Eckelberry’s house during the Christmas season. But he doesn’t stop at just lights. He also has about 20 cheery Christmas displays on his property. Eckelberry admits his display gets bigger each year.

The Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission is a private non-profit social service organization serving Knox, Holmes, Coshocton and Ashland Counties for over 45 years with more than 175 employees and 350 volunteers.

“I just loved that,” said Eckelberry. “That made me feel really good.”

All of the Eckelberry family’s hard work has paid off over the years. In addition to bringing joy to members of the community, they have won the West Lafayette Christmas Lighting Contest three years in a row. This year, their prize was $100.

“That means a lot to me,” said Eckelberry.

“It’s nice to win, but even if I didn’t win, it’s still always pleasurable to do.”

Eckelberry would like to thank his family: his wife, Teresa, his sons, Jake and Kannin, and his daughters, Destiny and Kacia, and also John Glaister for their input and support.

“Without them, their help and their thoughts, this wouldn’t be possible,” he said.

“I do it because as a kid, we never had a lot of Christmas lights,” he said. “I want my kids to have that same kind of joy for this time of the year that I do, and it’s nice to know the community enjoys it as much as I do.”

But Eckelberry doesn’t do it all by himself.

His wife Teresa and four children Jake, Destiny, Kacia, and Kannin have helped him plan and decorate each year.

“It’s a family thing,” he said. “It’s just a lot of fun to spend time with them.”

Each evening, starting on Thanksgiving Day, Eckelberry lights up his display from 6 – 9 p.m. The twinkling lights are set to Christmas music and traffic usually slows to an almost stop when they pass by. He also turns on his lights occasionally for children riding home on the school bus. One year, a little boy on the bus asked Eckelberry’s son if his dad was Santa

WARSAW – River View’s swim team recently attended the 7th annual Pentathalon Swim Meet at Rosecrans. It is a meet of five events with a 50y in each stroke and a 100y IM at the end.

The Bears entered four boys and seven girls.

Lydia Els placed in all five events for the girls, two fifths, two thirds, and a first. She was second overall girls scorer and third overall swimmers.

All four boys placed in at least one event and Dalton Hammond placed in all five events, two fourths, a third, a sixth, and a second. COSHOCTON – Area farmers are encouraged to attend a local Agronomy School to learn about different aspects of growing soybeans, corn and other commercial agricultural crops. OSU Extension professionals will lead the school which will be on Tuesday, Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Conesville United Methodist Church.

Some of the topics of discussion will include: Weed Management, Everything but the Kitchen Sink: High Input Soybean, Precision Ag Update, Manure Nutrient Management, and more.

Experts from across the state will be at the school to share their expertise, so don’t miss out on this opportunity.

Due to a grant through the Ohio Soybean Council, registration is only $20 and will include a light breakfast, lunch, and a copy of the 2014 Weed Control Guide. Certified Crop Advisory credits are also available. Registration is due by Jan. 17.

When McCarty and her family arrived in Ireland, they traveled the six miles to Ennis and found the bakery owned by Mary Coots, Dedra’s mother. When they arrived, Mary was not working that day, so McCarty promised to return the next day. When she returned, she explained to Mary and Dedra’s brother, Steven, that she had chanced to meet Dedra in a restaurant in New York and then delivered the note to her mother’s waiting hands.

“Her mom gave me a big hug,” said McCarty. “It was so awesome and her mom was ecstatic.”

Dedra’s mother is coming over to New York to spend Christmas with her daughter, and Steven is planning a trip to the states for St. Patrick’s Day. Dedra’s mother was so overwhelmed with McCarty’s generosity in hand-delivering the note that she even gave the McCarty family free food from her bakery.

“Just being a mom myself, it was awesome,” said McCarty. “Thinking about the mother/ daughter relationship and having her daughter living so far from home, it was just so awesome.”

COSHOCTON – When Shelly McCarty of Coshocton started to plan her second trip to Ireland, she never imagined how much of an impact it would make in her own life and in the lives of a mother and daughter separated by thousands of miles.

McCarty started the holiday season by visiting New York to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Having no other Thanksgiving dinner plans, she and her family stopped in at The Saloon, a restaurant in the city, to have dinner. They were surprised when their waitress approached the table and began talking in an Irish accent. Intrigued, McCarty asked her where she was from. When she said her name was Dedra Coots and she was from Ennis, McCarty remarked that it was her favorite city in Ireland, and that they were heading to Ireland the next day.

Coots had been in the United States for only six weeks and missed her family. She decided to write a note to her mother, who owned a bakery in Ennis. When she handed the note to McCarty, she promised to hand-deliver the note to Coots’ mother.

“It was just so awesome because of the randomness of it,” said McCarty. “It was a nice way to start the Christmas season. It had to have

Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town Jolly Olde Saint Nicholas MR. CLAUS

Santa Claus made an early visit on Friday, Dec. 20 to Coshocton County and decided to stop in at The Beacon newspaper to get his picture taken. Mr. Claus, known as Joe Hoover the other 364 days of the year, had visited Conesville Elementary, River View High School, Warsaw, and Union that morning.

His Christmas message was, “Merry Christmas to everyone and Jesus loves you.

COSHOCTON - Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a Traffic Blitz for the Christmas and New Year Holidays. We will be targeting traffic violations in the City in the areas of Sr 751, Cr 9 and Cr 16. This Blitz will run from Now January 2nd, 2014.

This “Blitz”, along with several others, is part of a grant our office has received from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. This grant

beginning of the course are quite surprised to find that they can make beautiful music, and use it to impact others in a positive way. As a music teacher, I hope the performance experience plants a seed for continued improvement in music for the rest of their lives. Beyond the music, I hope that the experience shows them the sense of accomplishment of working together for a common cause and that the real joy of Christmas is in giving – not receiving.”

WARSAW - The River View eighth grade bell choir, under the direction of Mark Wagner, performed several songs of the season in front of Wal-Mart on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 19 as part of their effort to ring in the spirit of Christmas. The students are in Wagner’s general music class and he said that the students have enjoyed the bell choir experience. “Many of these students have never played an instrument”, Wagner said, “but they really enjoy this.” The choir performed seven songs between the two groups performing.

The students took turns performing with the bells and staffing the Salvation Army kettle at Wal-Mart.

Olivia Wilhoyt, a member of the hand bells choir, said, “I think its fun just because it is all about teamwork. Everyone has to pitch in to make it sound good.” Wilhoyt said she enjoys the Christmas songs because, “They’re classic

Christmas songs and it’s just fun to play for them other people and make people happy. I like Jungle Bells; it’s fun and easy, too.”

Wilhoyt said, “I think it’s really good that we get to do this. It’s a fun time of year and not something we get to do every day. I think the hand bells are really fun and if someone has the opportunity they should do it.”

Another member of the choir, Hannah Poorman said she likes the hand bell choir because, “I get to bring joy to people that see us do this and also help out. We have been working on this for four weeks so we put a lot of time and effort into it when we are in class. We all had to judge each other so it was kind of hard but we made it.” Poorman said she had never done hand bells before the class and, “Believe it or not, it is actually a lot of fun to get to listen to your favorite Christmas music in bells.”

Wagner said that the students also visited the Autumn Extended Care Facility and Riverside Towers. Every eighth grader in the River View district takes the semester long general music course which teaches them to play the guitar and the hand bells. “Many students who would not necessarily call themselves musicians at the

Johnson Humrickhouse Museum to host CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON youth activity COSHOCTON - Children are invited to participate in a series of self-portrait workshops at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum on Jan. 4 and 11 and Feb. 1 from 2 – 4 p.m. The workshop is called Face to Face as participants will be examining their own and each other’s faces as they create a number of portraits using a variety of materials and methods. Children will be drawing, painting, collaging, and using pastels to reinterpret their face. Each person’s face will also be photographed so that those images can be used in a number of the projects.

Call these artistic “selfies”. Some may turn out to be suitable for framing.

STUCK, STUCK

The famous flagpole scene from the iconic movie “A Christmas Story” is on display at the home of Jean Ann Clark located at 865 State Route 541 just outside Roscoe. The home is located next to the Jackson Township fire station and is well lit at night. And why not, the small flagpole (everything is to size) does have an American flag proudly flying. Of course, this photo contributed by Clark is the famous tongue stuck to the flagpole. Clark had the display when she lived in New Philadelphia when she had two of the boys depicted in the scene. That was in 2010 and in 2011 she went all out – with three of the boys.
