The first half 2011 real estate tax bills were mailed Jan. 30, with a due date of Friday, March 2.

As a cost saving measure, any tax bill with a zero balance will not be mailed. Also, taxpayers on the escrow program will not receive a first half tax bill.

The Coshocton County Treasurer’s Office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office also will stay open until 6 p.m.

Friday, March 2, to better serve taxpayers.

A drop box was installed for the convenience of after hour payments. It is located to the left of the drive-thru window at the back of the courthouse annex. If you miss operating hours, feel free to place your stub and payment into the drop box. Any payments left in the drop box after 6 p.m. Friday, March 2, and before 8 a.m.

Monday, March 5, will not have a late penalty added.

Several banks also will take tax payments.

They are: Century National Bank, The Home Loan Savings Bank and Ohio Heritage Bank.

Payments also may be paid at the treasurer’s office drive-thru window. This window opened Jan. 31, for the convenience of the taxpayers.

If taxes are due, failure to receive a real estate tax bill does not eliminate the responsibility to pay. For questions or concerns about your tax statement or payments, call 622-2731.

Governor John Kasich stopped at Medbery Marketplace in Roscoe Village on Monday afternoon, Feb. 6, while on his way to Steubenville, where he will deliver the state of the state address on Tuesday. The Governor talked about the current sense of optimism building in the state and told those in attendance that the Governor’s office wants suggestions from members of the community. “What can we do to help grow your community?” said Kasich. Coshocton C.A.R.E.S. will conduct a FAFSA Assistance Night to assist parents and students in filing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) information online for the 2012-2013 school year. The program is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at Coshocton High School in the third floor computer labs.

You need to bring records of any income earned by yourself and the student in 2011. Bring the following to the workshop to assist in completing the FAFSA that night: • Parent and student FAFSA PIN numbers. Both the parent and the student will need a PIN number to sign the application electronically.

Obtain these ahead of time by visiting the FAFSA website at www.fafsa. ed.gov.

• Your driver’s license • Parent and student 2011 W-2 Forms and any records of money earned • Parent and student IRS 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ Tax Returns. This does not mean they have to have been submitted yet, just filled out.

• Your 2011 untaxed income records • Social Security (SSI, Disability, or Retirement) • Records of cash assistance from Job and Family Services • Veterans Benefits records • Parent and student bank statements for checking and savings accounts • Your current business and investment mortgage information, business and farm records, stocks, bonds and other investment records • Selective Service Number (Boys 18 and over) • A list of schools to which you want to send financial aid information If you have these documents on hand, you will be able to complete and file the FAFSA that night and get financial aid packages more quickly from schools. Colleges have a FAFSA deadline which you need to meet.

Career Center to have open house CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON The Coshocton County Career Center will be having their 14th annual Open House, which is designed to promote career-tech education in Coshocton County.

On Thursday, Feb. 16 from 4 - 8 p.m., the Career Center will open its labs, providing tours and handson activities, which highlight the career-tech program offerings.

Career Center students are involved in demonstrating their skills or showcasing a recently completed project. In some lab’s complimentary services are also offered.

Area business and industry representatives and past students are also on-hand to discuss employment and further education opportunities as well as “realworld” job experiences and skills application.

It’s a great opportunity for parents of sophomores to explore the programs further and to determine whether or not careertechnical training is the right “nextstep” for their child’s education.

Called by many “The Winter County Fair,” the Career Center Open House also opens its doors to hundreds of vendors and agencies from across the county. Participants come to educate county residents on their offerings and to show their support for the Career Center. Many

vendors also offer complimentary products and services and/or coupons for discounts on their products or services.

Career Center school board members and staff members serve a complimentary spaghetti dinner with ice cream for dessert, while continuous drawings for hundreds of donated door prizes take place in the school’s Commons area.

Other exciting activities are planned, including a live ice carving, an Xbox 360 Connect demo, karaoke contest, a cooking demonstration and vocal performances by our local high school choral members.

Come visit Big Top Boulevard in the T&I hallway for some circus.

You’ll find food and festivities that’ll have you thinking you’re at the circus.

WTNS Radio of Coshocton also participates by setting up a live remote broadcast station which follows the evening’s events and broadcasts interviews with Career Center staff members.

The River View agricultural education department hosted the annual corn club banquet and awards ceremony at River View High School Monday evening, Jan. 30. The club was the first corn club in Coshocton County and chartered in 1957, with D. D. Kennedy the first instructor.

Following a delicious buffet style meal of roast beef, turkey, corn, mashed potatoes with gravy, rolls, fruit salad and desserts, Jarrod Allison, the Ohio Division of Wildlife officer for Coshocton County, spoke about how his role serves the community, the impact of deer season on Coshocton County and the partnership between the Ohio Division of Wildlife and area farmers. Allison has been in Coshocton County since last March and with the Division of Wildlife for 10 years.

Trophies for the event were provided by the Coshocton Grain Company and the Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District. Plaques were provided by Farm Credit Services, Inc. Awards were presented to Craig Hunter for hill land, hand check with 172 bushels per acre.

In the machine check category, Dale Hedrick took top honors with 210.54 bushels per acre, Blair Porteus and Sons second with 202.91 bushels per acre and Ben Young third with 201.94 bushels per acre.

A Memorial Service for David Chaney of Coshocton was held at 6:00 PM Wednesday February 1, 2012 at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home.

Military honors were provided by the Licking County Veteran’s Alliance.

David was born on February 5, 1941 in Coshocton to the late Albert and Martha (McKnight) Chaney-Kaufman.

He died Saturday January 28, 2012 in his home surrounded by his family. He was 70 years old.

He was a member of the Conesville HS class of ’58 and enlisted in the US Navy. He retired from AK Steel (Cyclops,

The Young Leader of the Year Award is presented to a community leader who has demonstrated a commitment to Coshocton County early in his/ her career.

The young leader believes in the future of, and is an advocate for, Coshocton County. He/ she has invested time and energy in activities that generate momentum both in the local economy and in quality of life. The recipient of this award has been active in leadership roles in local organizations, community groups and/or service organizations. The young leader is a champion for Coshocton County who inspires contagious optimism.

Nominees for the award should be between 24 and 50 years of age and a resident of Coshocton County. The inaugural recipient last year was Kirby Hasseman.

Nominations should be in the form of a narrative telling the selection committee why you think the nominee should win this award.

There is no nomination form. The deadline for submissions is 4 p.m. Friday, March 2. The award will be presented at the Annual Chamber Dinner on Friday, April 20.

Julisa Rivera is glad her family chose to send her to Sacred Heart School.

“I’ve met a lot of great friends and teachers here,” said the fifth grader.

She started at Sacred Heart in first grade along with her cousin Vanessa Rivera.

“I like that we go to mass every Thursday,” Vanessa said.

Last Thursday students at Sacred Heart invited friends and family to mass with them as part of their Catholic Schools’ Week celebration.

“I like Catholic Schools’ Week because you can spend more time with your prayer person and your family,” Vanessa said.

After Thursday’s mass students and their special friends attended a reception in the school’s gym, where Virgil and Shirley Bennett were enjoying looking at work on display by

their granddaughter, Grace Gottwalt.

“We enjoy looking at her work and meeting other parents, kids and teachers,” Shirley said.

Grace, a fourth grader at the school, was enjoying the week.

“I like getting to celebrate all the different things each day and I like going here because you get to have God in your classroom,” she said.

Catholic Schools’ Week included a breakfast, opening prayer, celebrate our Catholic heritage day, pajama day, the special friends mass and reception and a Chinese New Year celebration.

Pajama day was a big hit with several of the students, but many of them also realized that the week was about more than just fun.

“This week we got to spend more time learning about God,” Julisa said.

Sophi Hardesty is glad God is part of her school days.

“We get to talk about God freely here,” said the fifth grader.

Parents also like the sense of community that is present at the school.

“It’s not just a school you go to and spend part of your day at,” said Sarah Fornara, who has a daughter in the fifth grade. “The sixth graders know the kindergarteners and they all look out for each other and help each other out.”

Heather Stewart, who teaches preschool at Sacred Heart agreed with Fornara.

“There is never a stranger here,” she said.

“At least you are not treated as one.”

February 11th, 1952 Patricia Whitney, organist at Grace Methodist Church, opened the service that Sunday playing “Lead Kindly Light” on the church’s new set of chimes with organ accompaniment.

The morning worship service was a special dedication service for the chimes, given to the church by an anonymous donor who also donated a Krakauer spinet piano and a consonatta organ. The chimes were Maas Vibrachimes and had a wide range of 25 tons.

They had been installed to play in connection with the console of the church’s organ.

February 12th, 1962 One hundred twenty-five couples enjoyed dancing the night away at the annual Sweetheart Ball in celebration of the upcoming holiday. The dance was at the Coshocton Armory which was all decorated with red and white to go along with the Valentine’s Day theme. The previous year’s queen, Mrs. Hudak, crowned the new queen, Miss Sandra Burris, during a special ceremony. Her attendants were Nellie Darr, Mrs. Woodrow, Mrs. Elliott, and Mrs. Hart.

The event was sponsored by the Altrurian Club.

1972

February 11th, 1972 DeAnn Harris, 10-year-old resident of Coshocton, had received a special piece of mail. She had received a birthday card from President Nixon. DeAnn and the president shared the same birthday of Jan. 9 so she had written to the president earlier that month to inform him. The president wrote back and said, “Since you and I celebrate a mutual birthday, it is a special pleasure to send congratulations to you. I hope your day was an especially nice one, and I am glad to send you warm good wishes for health and happiness in the year ahead.”

1982

February 12th, 1982 The Class of ’59 was coming to Coshocton High School with their hot rods and bobby socks. “Grease” was to be the first production of the Coshocton High School drama club and it promised to be memorable with its 50’s fad costumes and unforgettable music including, “Greased Lightning” and “Summer Nights”. Steve Mitchell and student assistant Amy Thomas added a special feature before the show. Using pictures from Coshocton’s 1950’s yearbooks, the two created a slideshow of old pictures from that era. They hoped it would bring back memories for Coshocton residents. The show also featured a real car on stage and a rock band.

The Pomerene Center for the Arts Chocolate Extravaganza gets bigger and better each year.

“I think it’s so successful because it allows culinary artists in our community a venue to bake, create and display their work,” said Mickie Galajda, one of the event coordinators. “Every year the desserts also get prettier and fancier, plus they taste great.”

The 19th annual Chocolate Extravaganza will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Coshocton County Career Center. Galajda was assisted in her planning by Jill Fry and Mindy Brems.

Another sign of the event’s success is its move to the career center.

“We are going to have ample parking and seating there,” Galajda said. “We also have a beautiful kitchen for our servers to work from.”

The move to the career center is the Chocolate Extravaganza’s second venue change in four years. The event first outgrew the Pomerene Center and last year it outgrew the Emmanuel Lutheran Church parking lot.

“We hope to be at the career center for many years to come,” Galajda said.

Tickets for the Chocolate Extravaganza can be reserved by contacting the Pomerene Center for the Arts or purchased at Medberry Marketplace, Good News Bookstore or Dean’s Jewelry for $8 and at the door for $10.

With your ticket you get five desserts. One choice from the cheesecake and pie table, one from the cakes and torte table and three from the sweet treats table.

“There will be many wonderful desserts that we will replenish all afternoon,” Galajda said.

Some favorite desserts from the past events were Mike Abood’s cheesecakes and Wendy Schumaker’s Smith Island 10-layer tort.

“Mike makes a raspberry cheesecake that is gorgeous and to die for,” Galajda said.

Eighty-six bakers are bringing 112 desserts that will dish out around 1,200 servings. There also are about another 70 people who volunteered their time to help put the event together.

“We have a dynamic committee and lots and lots of volunteers,” said Anne Cornell, director of the Pomerene Center for the Arts.

The Chocolate Extravaganza also will include a raffle for eight desserts, music by the Cowboy Hillbilly Hippy Folk Band and demonstrations and displays by the Artist Friends of the Pomerene.

“It’s a celebration of creativity,” Cornell said.

The Chocolate Extravaganza is the Pomerene Center’s major fundraising event.

“It helps us keep community arts lively here in Coshocton County,” Cornell said.

The event is sponsored by Dean’s Jewelry, Miller Pharmacy, The Old Warehouse Steak n’ Stein, Rainbow Hills Winery and Knobhill Design.

Organizers hope to serve 400 and beat last year’s total of $4,000 raised.

A large variety of desserts and being listed in the January/February 2012 issue of the nationally distributed Midwest Living magazine should help them accomplish their goal.

Dearyan’s wife Julie described some of the planned wild game recipes.

“Delicious venison tenderloin marinated in a special blend of spices and herbs and flaky pastry covers popular Squirrel pot pie,” she said. “Many people in the Chili and Fresno area had heard of Reva’s famous squirrel pot pie and were thrilled to see it on the buffet.

Spanish mackerel is fresh from the ocean and fried to golden perfection. Cheesy potatoes and delicious desserts round out the exotic and fun menu.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite wild game dish, a side dish or even a dessert.

The evening also will include a two hour demonstration by a taxidermist.

“He will make a deer head mount from start to finish,” Neal said. “Everyone who comes is welcome to watch him. There is no blood involved. He will start with a tanned hide and sew together a deer head mount for all who want to watch.”

Neal is excited for the demonstration.

“I’ve never seen that done in person,” he said. “My guess is that many hunters (or their spouses and kids) have never seen it done in person, so I feel this is a great addition to the program for the evening.”

Neal also encourages people to bring their own mounts to display.

“Last year people brought their trophies to display and we had bear, fox, pheasant, duck, bass, squirrel and grouse,” he said. “My wife shot the bear. We will display the bearskin and head again this year. “ If you have a picture of yourself with the animal you bagged, feel free to send the picture to Neal at neal@chilibiblechurch.org, and he will include them in a PowerPoint presentation.

“This is all free,” Neal said.”It’s not a fundraiser. It’s a fun, feel good community event.”

“She wants to be a nurse practitioner and I think it’s great she was able to use what she’s interested in and her 4-H experience to work on the goals she set,” Nelson said. “We are real excited.”

Gilmore worked on the blankets for three days and used a receiving blanket that was used by her family as a pattern.

“I also made sure I picked colors that are unisex,” she said.

Gilmore is a senior at River View High School and is taking post secondary courses at the Kent State Tuscarawas branch.

Eighteen babies born at Coshocton County Memorial Hospital will benefit from skills Christy Gilmore learned through her involvement with 4-H. On Feb. 1, Gilmore donated receiving blankets she made to the hospital’s birthing centre.

“We really appreciate this,” said Beth McKeown, head nurse in the nursery. “We plan to give one out today.”

Gilmore, a State 4-H Ambassador and member of the State Fashion Board, made the blankets to help her complete the last of three goals she set to help promote 4-H. “I needed to help with a community project, promote 4-H through the media and do a community service project that used skills I learned while in 4-H,” she said.

McKeown was glad Gilmore thought of CCMH for her community service project.

“It’s nice to see young people in town giving of themselves,” she said.

Good food and fellowship is what Chili Crossroads Bible Church’s Tri-County Wing Contest and Wild Game Dinner is all about.

“We love meeting the great people in this community and this is a good way to do that and have some fun,” said Pastor Neal Dearyan.

The wing contest and dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at the church which is located at 29445 County Road 10 in Fresno.

“This is our second time for the event, but we’ve made it so much better this year,” Dearyan said.

Youngsters will be able to burn off their energy in a bounce house and attendees will have the chance to win prizes donated by local business and mingle with political and business leaders who were invited to the event. Wing contest competitors also will face a bigger challenge.

“Last year we had no time limited on the wing eating contest and we also let them drink milk or water,” Dearyan said. “This year we are going to do a five to 10 minute time frame and not let them drink anything. The bones also have to be perfectly clean.”

About a dozen people competed in last year’s contest.

“I’ve heard a lot of macho talk so this year’s numbers could be up,” Dearyan said.

The winner of the contest and the junior atomic wing challenge will both get a T-shirt.

This year, wings also will be judged for taste, presentation and creativity.

If wings aren’t for you, then you may want to try some of the wild game dishes that are being prepared for the event.

Dearyan is expecting a mix of pheasant, chucker partridge, moose, deer, elk, wild turkey and fresh Spanish mackerel.

“The list keeps growing every day,” he said.

Evan Jones, a six foot six, 245 pound senior at Ridgewood High School, signed his letter of intent to play football as a tight end for the Michigan State Spartans early Wednesday morning in the high school library. Friends, family and coaches looked on with pride as a smiling Jones signed his name on the line. Feb. 1 is known as national signing day and recruits typically sign their letters of intent on that day.

Jones played tight end and defensive end for a Generals football team that went to a final four state playoff and won back to back to back IVC league championships.

Jones said, “I’ve been waiting for this day for awhile now. I’ve been committed since May but it seems like I’ve been committed for a year.

It just feels good to finally get here and move on.

It feels good – two back to back 11 win seasons – they’re always ranked as the underdogs. With two back to back seasons of showing what they can do, it’s pretty exciting, I’m ready to get up there and join the family.”

Jones said that what helped him get to the next level beyond his physical size is his work ethic, “Work ethic is a big part of it. You have to want it personally and mentally. Everything is mental; you have to tell yourself that you can achieve it.”

“The coaching staff here is awesome. I think they’re the best coaching staff in Ohio. I’m pretty blessed to be a part of that.

“I’m going to miss the coaches and my fellow teammates.”

Jones said that his sophomore season was the highlight of his time at Ridgewood. It was his first year playing. “Just getting to play next to my brother the whole season and make it to the final four. That was a great time.”

Jones is looking at graphic design, engineering or possibly business as he pursues a degree but nothing is certain yet.

Troy Jones, Evan’s father, said, “It feels great to see your son go through such a perfect

thing, the recruiting process, and have the chance to go to the next level and have this opportunity.

It’s really special. The time here, the experience here at Ridgewood is very special. The coaching staff and everyone, the community has really done a great job with my son, supporting him, they’re great people. The coaches really worked well with him, they deserve the credit.”

Head football coach John Slusser said of Jones signing, “It’s very exciting for our program and for our school. It gives a little bit of reality and validity to other kids as they’re coming up through that it can be done. You here all the time, that you want to go do this or that but you may never see it, and now they have a role model that they can follow and it can happen.”

Coach Slusser said of Jones, “Obviously his physical size jumped out at us right away, but he’s also a really good athlete with that physical size. He runs well, he moves well, the thing that also sticks out is that he has a really big heart. He’s a really good boy. Our county, for as little as it is, has been really fortunate the past twelve months to have two Big 10 football players sign, Shaw from Coshocton and now our kid. When you think about some of the athletes we’ve turned out, the Olingers from here to Ohio State, the Daugherty girls to Division I to play basketball. When I think about these kids, I think about how classy they are, and I think Evan will fall right into line with them because he has the biggest heart of anyone I know.

“There seems to be an ingredient in these kids, they all have some physical attribute that makes them special, but they’re all pretty special on the inside too. And that’s good for our kids to see, you don’t have to be arrogant, you don’t have to be a poor student, you don’t have to be a tough guy, you can be a really nice guy and be a tremendous athlete. That’s what Zach Shaw did, that’s what Evan did and that’s what the Olingers did.

“The thing about E (Evan) is that I think his desire has grown every day that he’s been involved. He started out as a young kid when he came to us as a sophomore. He was a little unsure; I tried to tell him as a freshman in high school that he could be somebody special. I think he’s bought into it a little bit more every day, I’ve seen his desire only growing every day as he grows up.

“When we got him the first day of practice as a sophomore, he gave us 110 percent every day; he was never a kid that you had to motivate in practice by yelling or with punishment. He was always self motivated to be good. We’re proud of him.”

Recipes of Christmas past spiced up the Fourth annual Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns during A Very Vintage Christmas event, held in December 2011. In addition to benefiting charities, the event awarded 12 of the area’s finest inns and B&Bs a stage to showcase their award-winning and unique properties. The inns prepared classic delights from the recipe book “Festive Favorites,” a compilation of more than 350 delectable cookie recipes, and served them up with 1940s flair. Visitors on the tour enjoyed seeing how each inn incorporated the 1940s theme. Vintage holiday décor, Christmas trees dressed with tinsel, and Christmas cards from a by-gone era decked the halls and guestrooms of the inns.

As a second grader, Alex Griffith is already a skilled foul shooter.

The Keene Elementary student and son of Toni and Adam Griffith, recently won the 8-9-year-old category of the District Elks Hoop Shoot in Dover after winning the local competition in Coshocton.

“I felt awesome that day,” Alex said. “When I’m up there making shots I’m pretty relaxed.”

He made 23 shots out of 25, which was the highest score of all classes, boys and girls.

“I heard about the hoop shoot and thought it would be fun,” Alex said. “Every day after school I went down to the gym and practiced at the foul line.”

He would like to play point guard someday.

“I like being out there, shooting the ball and being with my friends,” Alex said. “I just love the game.”

Basketball was even incorporated into his birthday celebration.

The same weekend he won in Dover, Alex also got to see the Harlem Globetrotters play in Wheeling, W.Va. with his parents and his sister Olivia.

“We did the meet and great before the Globetrotters performed so he got to get up close and get their autographs,” said Toni.

“We are especially proud of him because he was just 7-years-old when all this took place and was going up against 8-9-year-olds,” she said.

Alex’s next stop is the State Elks Hoop Shoot, which is set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18, in Grove City.

“I’m going to just keep going after school and practicing,” he said.

Toni said Alex spends at least 20-30 minutes a day practicing.

“He worked very hard to get as far as he has,” she said.

Annual chili supper and book fair held at Central The annual chili supper at Central Elementary School, held on Wednesday, Feb. 1 in the school cafeteria, brings together students, parents, staff and members of the community for a good purpose. Denise Johnson, secretary at the school and secretary of the PTO, said, “We get a lot of help from the staff here at the school and also from the parents. The staff provides most of the desserts, we have students that help with the serving, lots of parents come in and help with the serving, Jennifer Andrews, our food coordinator makes the chili for us. It’s good chili!

“We average about 150 people at the event.

The money raised goes to the school, incentives for AR (Accelerated Reading), field trips, field day at the end of the year. Things that the teachers need help with.

“This is a great opportunity for kids to bring their parents to the book fair. They can buy books to help with literacy.”

Johnson said, “The role of the PTO is to help the students, helping out the children,

“The home was built in 1973 by Ed Hunter and I purchased it in July 2000,” Drinko said. “I recently had cable work done at my home and these items were found in the living room under a built-in entertainment center. Mrs. Hunter was an avid gardener and left behind hand written notes and indoor gardening information from 1980.”

Valentine’s Day is a celebration of friends, family and love

BY JOSIE McCORMICK For years several of my former co-workers, a few friends and I gathered together around Feb. 14, for what we called our Anti-Valentine’s Day party.

Red wasn’t allowed, stickers with crossed out hearts were passed out and there was no talk of love. I don’t remember when the parties ended, but I do recall when I realized I needed to start looking at Valentine’s Day in a different way.

One year after planning our annual party, my fellow female co-workers and I walked into work to discover that Valentine’s Day had exploded.

We each had fake rose pedals scattered about our area, stuffed animals perched on our desks and I believe we also each received a rose. Our Valentine was one of the male co-workers in our office. He wanted us to celebrate the holiday and not be bitter about it. His kindness and gifts definitely made me see that Valentine’s Day isn’t just for lovers.

Now when I think about Valentine’s Day I remember how lucky I am whether I’m dating someone or not. I have family members that will always stick by my side and friends who are like family. The Chocolate Extravaganza will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Coshocton County Career Center. Saturday’s local entertainment schedule also includes the Sweetheart Big Band Dance, which will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. at the historic Lake Park Pavilion. Tickets are $15 each and are available at the door.

Romance is in the air at Coshocton Lake Park this weekend, Feb. 11 at the annual Sweetheart Dance in the pavilion. Sit back and listen to the soothing sounds of the Lake Park Big Band as they play some of the greatest hits from the 1930s and 1940s including famous songs from a by-gone era such as hits by Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and Sammy Kaye.

Reba Kocher, daughter of Mark and Barbara Kocher, was named the February 2012 West Lafayette Rotary student of the month.

Reba, a Ridgewood High School junior, is an active member of the marching band, concert band, pep band, jazz band, choir and the school musicals. Her athletic participation is track. Her clubs at school include the book club, Foreign Language club, teen institute and quiz team.

Academically, she has a 4.0 average.

Community activities take much of her extra time. She is involved in Relay for Life, Coshocton Youth Foundation and Coshocton Baptist church where she runs the sound booth and helps with VBS and Awana. Camp Echoing Hills is included in her volunteer work.

When asked to name the person who has contributed to her self-development, she named her father as he is always there to encourage and help when she needs it. The experience that has given her the greatest satisfaction was when she volunteered at Camp Echoing Hills as a camp counselor. Seeing those kids light up meant everything to her.

CHS’s Woodrum selected to coach Big 33 Football Game

Jim Woodrum, Coshocton High School’s football coach, was recently selected to coach in this summer’s annual Big 33 Football Game.

“It’s an honor first of all because I was chosen by my peers and because this shows respect for our program,” Woodrum said.

He also credits his assistant coaches for helping him get this honor.

“Without them I wouldn’t be here,” Woodrum said. “I’m very WOODRUM fortunate because our staff has been together so long.”

Woodrum expects big things out of his football players every year.

“Our goals never change,” he said. “We are

going to be a little bit young (next year), but we expect to win and the community expects us to win. We are going to work very hard.”

The Big 33 Football Game is scheduled for Saturday, June 16 in Hersey, Pa. It will be televised on the NFL Network at 7 p.m.

“I always tell the kids you don’t get the high honors unless you come from a good program,” Woodrum said.

Three beginner classes in crocheting will be offered at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum on the third Saturday of the month, beginning Feb. 18.

Participants will begin a new project in each class. The instructor, Jessie Tubbs, has made a name for herself making whimsical animal hats, which can be viewed on her business’s Facebook page, Hooked on Hats and more.

Classes run from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants should bring a crochet hook (G or H) and a skein or two of worsted yarn--acrylic, wool or a blend.

The class is informal and fun. The coffee pot will be on.

Topics for each month are: Feb. 18: Introduction to basic stitches, terms and abbreviations. Students will begin a scarf.

March 17: A refresher in the basic stitches and then on to make a slouchy beanie.

The Bible study will begin on Wednesday, Feb 8 starting at 7 p.m. and lasting about an hour. The study will be on the book of Nehemiah, which is a book exploring God’s plan and how to live your life.

“Most people get to the end of life asking what could have been,” said Mason. “Nehemiah is a book about leadership and how I should lead my life, so hopefully, when they get to the end of their life, they’re not asking that question.”

More than 25,000 residents in Coshocton County do not have a church that they call home. Over the course of the next ten weeks, Dwight Mason, pastor of NewPointe Church in Dover, Ohio hopes to change that by bringing more people to know Christ.

“Our goal is not to target the 6,000 in Coshocton who already go to church,” said Mason, “We are targeting the 25,000 who are not going to church.”

The NewPointe Church has campuses throughout northeast Ohio with about 3,000 attending the Dover campus alone. Other campuses are located in Millersburg and Canton.

The hope is to have a NewPointe Church in Coshocton County.

“We are exploring doing a launch, a campus there,” said Mason. “We have about 200 people

HEAP is a federally funded program designed to help eligible Ohioans meet their winter heating costs. Assistance is available at the Center or for those unable to stop in, an in-home visit can be scheduled. Flu Shot. It is not too late to receive a flu shot. The peak month in Ohio is usually February. Call the County Health Department at 295-7307 to schedule a time. They bill most insurance and Medicare Part B. For adults 18 and over, the influenza vaccine fee is $25. It is covered by Medicare Part B (Traditional Medicare): Aetna, Anthem BCBS, CareSource, Cigna, Humana, Medical Mutual of Ohio, Medicare B and Rail Road, Molina Healthcare, Ohio Health Choice, SummaCare, The Health Plan, UMWA, and United Healthcare, not community plan. Relay for Life Meetings. Relay for Life will be having team/captain meetings at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at 6:45 p.m. on Mondays. The schedule is as follows: Feb. 27, March 26, April 16, April 30, and May 7. Relay for Life is Friday, May 18 at 6 p.m. to Saturday, May 19 at 6 p.m.

S’COOL. River View Junior High School choirs will present S’COOL on Friday, Feb. 24. S’COOL is a Teenage Rock/Pop Musical that captures the highs and lows of a day in the life of the average teenage student transitioning to adulthood. The musical will feature RVJH 7th and 8th grade choirs with solos by many students including: Morgan Anglin, Garrett Fabian, CC Brown, Sarah Holmes, Michael Belt, Sami Trowbridge, and Hunter Holdsworth.
