Issue II: July

Page 1

This summer is gearing up to be as busy (and hot) as ever! We want to encourage you to enjoy the outdoors by being safe, wearing sunscreen, drinking plenty of water, and following extra precautions during heat advisory warning periods. In this newsletter, we are excited to share with you opportunities to engage with our community, participate in our City Budget process, and join in the fun events throughout our District.

DISTRICT NEWSLETTER

We are excited to announce a District 2 partnership with Alamo City Studios, where students from Sam Houston High School will learn from professionals in the film and digital media industry; a location study for a brand new senior center & housing development; our plan to allocate federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars; the results of the street lighting index; the conclusion of our City’s redistricting efforts; and a tentative timeline for our 2022-2027 Bond program. We will also be hosting a series of events and townhalls aimed to build and strengthen our community. Now that I’m a Zumba instructor, we also look forward to hosting free Zumba classes in District 2!

This year has taught us that, people power is the most powerful tool of all. When we show up for eachother, and alongside eachother, our influence is significant. Our team may not have every answer or every solution to our greatest needs, but we stand firm in our commitment to serving you and working with you through any obstacle. As always, it is a privilege and honor to serve you.

Yours in service,

Councilman, District 2

The Budget

District 2 demonstrates some of the greatest need in our City. From infrastructure, to animal care services, to economic development, the need to make wise investments has never been clearer. The City of San Antonio is conducting a survey to gather your priorities to develop its Fiscal Year 2023 Budget. The City’s budget serves as a roadmap to provide our residents with services and programming for next year. Please join Councilman McKee-Rodriguez for upcoming opportunities to participate in the City Budget at Municipal Chambers/City Hall.

This summer, through the City’s Ambassador program, we have two interns joining our D2 team. The Ambassador Summer Internship Program exposes students to professional opportunities and innovative career paths through paid internships, Peer-to-Peer networking sessions, and community service projects. Program participants are placed with government entities, non-profit agencies, and private organizations to gain experience in high-demand occupations in an effort to attract San Antonio’s graduating professionals to career opportunities within the local community. Maya and Dymon will be joining our District team to learn more about the role local government plays in our daily lives.

Maya (20) is a junior at The University of Texas at Austin, and Dymon (25) is a senior at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Throughout their experience in the District 2 office, they will be working with constituents, studying policy and budgeting tools, and working on a culminating final project that utilizes many of the tools and skills they’ve learned thus far.

This past month, City Council also approved an additional half-time position, bringing us to a total allowance of 8 employees. We recently wrapped up our interview process and look forward to introducing another member to our District 2 team. Check the next page to meet our newest hire!

He will be supporting our Constituent Services team and our efforts in community engagement and outreach. He is an avid Star Trek fan and a father of two. He looks forward to serving you!

AIR CONDITIONING

A/C can make up about 58% of your energy bill. And during hot summer months like these, your A/C Unit is working harder than ever. CPS recommends you set your thermostat between 78° and 80°, use a fan to help stay cooler, check and/or replace your air filters every two weeks May through October, check ducts for air leaks, install solar screens to limit heat from sunlight entering the home, and close your curtains and blinds where practical during the day.

GWATER HEATING

Water heating makes up 13% of your energy bill. CPS recommends you consider these tips to conserve energy and money: Insulate the first 12 inches of both the hot and cold water pipes to reduce heat loss, take shorter showers to minimize run time for reheating water, consider using timers on an electric water heater to minimize run time when not in use, maintain the hot water temperature at 120°, and wash clothes in cold/medium temperatures rather than hot water and do full loads.

LIGHTING

Lighting makes up 10% of your energy bill. CPS recommends you can cut your lighting consumption by more than half by following these simple rules: turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, open curtains and shades to maximize the use of natural light if the air condition is not in use, keep any lighting away from thermostats – heat emitting from the bulbs can cause the air condition to run excessively, and use LED bulbs which use at least 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs.

REFRIGERATION

Refrigeration accounts for 7% of your monthly bill. To help save energy and money, CPS recommends you follow these tips: set refrigerator temperature between 37°F and 40°F, avoid placing a refrigerator in the garage, the unconditioned space can cause the appliance to overwork, set freezer temperature between 0° and 5°, make sure to seal around the appliance door is airtight (loose or moldy seals should be replaced), keep refrigerator coils clean from lint and dus, and, when possible, replace your refrigerator to a more efficient model.

REBATES AND INCENTIVES

Find a variety of money-saving rebates and incentives for your home or business. To take advantage of our latest offers, visit cpsenergy.com/savenow or call 210-353-2728.

MY THERMOSTAT REWARDS
