s you read this we have already welcomed in 2013. Another year ahead, full of opportunity, promise, and change. It always makes us feel as if “This is going to be the Year!!” Is this your year? With all good intentions we attempt to make a realistic list, some resolutions are more convincing than others. There is something about taking that blank piece of paper and giving your resolution life! If it’s in black and white, it’s more difficult to ignore. Career changes, family changes, lifestyle, and yes the dreaded weight change dictates what we put on our list. Our age will also determine what qualifies as “making the list.” At the age of 50 I can’t say I will be writing “party more”, my list will include “spending more time with my family”, and with all the best intentions, exercise more. Here is a list of the top ten New Years resolutions. 1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends 2. Join a gym and get fit. 3. Lose Weight 4. Quit Smoking 5. Work less enjoy life more 6. Eliminate Debt 7. Save more money 8. Learn something new 9. Volunteer by helping others 10. Get Organized Take a moment and reflect on what was, and compile your list on what YOU are in control of. Please share you stories, whether it is challenges or successes. I would love to hear from you. I would also like to thank all of my advertisers and contributors in the second edition of Newcastle Today. Enjoy!!

THEY ARE NOT

What Your Great Grandparents Wore By Kat Tomaszewska B.Sc., DD

T

There are many different types of dentures; complete, partial, immediate, implant supported dentures, etc. There are also many misconceptions associated with them. Dental prostheses are for everyone. There are no age restrictions, no limitations. No matter what age you are dental prostheses are one of many ways of dealing with missing teeth. The type of denture one may require is personal and should be based on an individualized treatment plan.

Remember a properly constructed denture can improve your quality of life.

What happens when missing teeth are left untreated? Firstly, adjacent teeth will begin to move into the space, resulting in teeth being bent out of place. Secondly, opposing teeth (teeth on the opposite arch) will “over grow”. Also, in case of missing front teeth the lips lose their support. This results in lips looking sunken in and wrinkled. A properly designed denture will restore natural contours, supporting the lips and facial muscles.

If you already have dentures; how would you know if it might be time to get a new set? Every 5-7 years is the accepted norm, again this could vary depending on ones personal needs. The best way to know for sure is to visit your local denturist for an assessment. You can also, do an assessment yourself. For instance, if your denture is orangey in colour, has dark spots or any other discolouration it definitely needs to be replaced. Also, your denture isn’t fitting properly anymore; you may need a reline or a new set. If you have sore spots where you didn’t before, left untreated they could lead to oral cancer (due to constant irritation). Remember a properly constructed denture can improve your quality of life. You will look younger, function better, but most importantly you’ll get your confidence back.

KNOW

W We can recommend options and provide tips and information that you may not be aware of, which will add great value to your vacation.

Before You Go By Sheila Barchard

“Why go into the travel business when everyone can just book on-line?” That’s the question we were asked most when we decided to get into this business in September, 2011. The answer was easy. We have a passion for travel and we love great, personal service. We used to find it convenient to book online, until we booked a flight & hotel and wanted to change the hotel. It took three days of calling and many hours on the phone with someone in a foreign country to get things changed. Of course, the best way to plan your vacation is to contact a travel professional. We can recommend options and provide tips and information that you may not be aware of, which will add great value to your vacation. You are investing in yourself so why not consult with an expert before spending your money? Do you really have all the information you need to make the best choice for you and your fam-

ily? And if you book on line, is there someone you can call afterwards with questions? What if you would like to request a king size bed, or you have a question about travel insurance? Maybe you do have all the answers because you have been there before and you want to go back. If that’s the case, we have on-line booking on our website. The difference is, when you book on our website, we are notified when you make that booking and we are still here for you - in your own community. Newcastle Travel is part of Travel Professionals International, a Canadian company that’s been around for 15 years with a network of over 750 agents Canada-wide. Our regional office is in Mississauga, providing ongoing support and training. In addition, our agents have an “answer board” where they can share questions and answers about destinations, resorts, and anything travel, so no matter where you want to go, we can get you there.

W We can expect Newcastle to become a more vibrant and attractive place for other businesses to locate here.

By Wendy Partner - Councillor Ward 4

What a privilege for me to bring news of what’s happening and is projected to happen in Newcastle and in this great forum. This magazine is a huge asset to Newcastle and will continue to keep us all up to date with local happenings. Great job Cory! We are so excited! Did you know Newcastle has approximately 2,830 households based on 2011 data and is projected to increase to 6,810 by 2031? Everyone must be thrilled to have our new Shoppers Drug Mart and No Frills, both projects designed to reflect the historic character of Newcastle’s downtown added to our shopping and the new Newcastle fire hall is projected to start late December with construction we hope to finish by the spring of 2014. There are also two expansions currently developing: being Brookfield’s and the second phase of Gracefields is now draft approved. We can expect Newcastle to become a more vibrant and attractive place for other businesses to locate here. The vacated office space at 20

Robert St. will soon be occupied by the professional offices of ADRA. ADRA is a charitable organization involved in facilitating third world development and relief work around the world. ADRA will be relocating their offices from Oshawa to Newcastle together with between 12-20 full and part-time jobs. The Municipality is currently finalizing urban design guidelines for the Newcastle Village Centre. The guidelines would provide direction on how development should occur within the village center and ensure it enhances the quality of private and public realms. So these are just a few of the great projects we have on tap for Newcastle in the near future. We all know Newcastle is the placed to be and now it seems, so do many others who have decided to relocate their businesses and their homes! With joining the other Newcastle’s of the World and making our mark on the world stage Newcastle is and will continue to be the place to be in the future!

LIVING WITH Your Antique Furniture By Darlene Blades

S Having furniture with it’s original finish is like being able to reach back in time and touch it at it’s original moment.

Sometimes old furniture should never be touched especially if it has it’s original finish. I am talking about furniture made prior to the Industrial Revolution. Usually furniture from this period would have hand made dovetails and square nails. There was a lot of furniture made it factories from the late 1800’s onward. Sometimes, even these pieces should be left alone. Having furniture with it’s original finish is like being able to reach back in time and touch it at it’s original moment. As a furniture refinisher, most of the furniture in my home has it’s original finish. Some antique collectors call refinished furniture skinned. Now dining room tables, I believe should be refinished as the new finishes protect against water and sun damage. Sanders, NEVER EVER USE SANDERS TO REFINISH FURNITURE. Stripping an old finish is about carefully removing the old

finish by hand with stripper, steel wool, rags and some tender loving care. Patina is everything that has ever happened to that piece of furniture in it’s lifetime. All things, a nick in the leg of a table, a scratch on the table top, the crackling of the paint, the wear patterns on the arm of a chair where a person’s hands have rested for years or the edge of a table where someone has read the newspaper for many years. Furniture changes colour over time due to exposure to air and light. If you sand the top of a table, you will never be able to make it look the same as the skirt, the base or the legs, you might as well go and buy a new table. Over the years, I have seen terrible damage to furniture from the use of sanders. Recently, I looked an article on the “American Antiques Roadshow” written by Peter Cook. He says “ that because of the Roadshow CONTINUES ON PAGE 13

reaching millions of people, they have been misled because the furniture appraisers don’t establish that they are only talking about rare pieces when they claim that their value is lost by repairing or refinishing.” Further, when the experts are dealing with a piece that has been refinished or repaired the piece was most likely in poor or unpresentable condition to begin with. Condition, condition, condition is what constitutes the value of a piece of furniture. One time, while I was living in the United States, I was asked to fix a set of Hepplewhite chairs that had been badly chewed by a dog and were put together with popsicle sticks and

string. We contacted Sotheby’s and sent them digital pictures and were told that refinishing and repairing those chairs would make them worth more than leaving them alone. Painting antique furniture that has a finish on it, does not destroy the furniture. Sometimes a coat a paint on an old piece of furniture is nice, a whole new look. I don’t like to paint furniture that has no finish on it as there is nothing there to protect against the paint going into the grain of the wood. If you ever wanted to take the piece back to it’s original look it wouldn’t be that difficult.

Condition, condition, condition is what constitutes the value of a piece of furniture.

FAMOUS PEOPLE from Newcastle

Joseph E. Atkinson (December 23, 1865 – May 7, 1948) was a Canadian newspaper editor and activist. Under his leadership the Toronto Starbecame one of the largest and most influential newspapers in Canada. Daniel Massey, whose farm implement business eventually formed MasseyFerguson. Early settlers using sticks and spears could catch as many as 100000 salmon in one night from streams running into Lake Ontario. One man who had a great influence on the village was Samuel Wilmot. He became interested in the

salmon as early as 1860 and built a “fish hatchery” at Newcastle - one of the world’s first. Wilmot would eventually become head of fisheries for Canada, and in the 1890s he was running a small generating station which supplied Newcastle with its first electrical power - from sunset until about 12:00 midnight. Louis G. Lalande (March 11, 1935-) is a retired pipefitter and community volunteer. In 1999, while manning a booth for the Knights of Columbus’ annual charity raffle near a bank at a mall in Oshawa, he foiled a bank robbery by striking the assailant about the head and shoul-

ders with a metal folding chair. The pistol the assailant was brandishing at the time turned out to be a starting pistol, but this was unknown to Lalande and the bank’s occupants at the time. Lalande was subsequently awarded the Medal of Bravery,[1] and the Carnegie Medal for Heroism.[2] The 1980s rock band Chalk Circle was formed in the village. They had top 10 hits in Canada with songs like April Fool, Me, Myself and I and Sons and Daughters, a song about the negative effects of free trade with the USA.

All of your home maintenance & renovation needs under one roof

W

hen embarking on home renovations it can be very daunting. Where do I start? Who do I call first? Do I need permits? How do I know the company that I hire is certified and insured? Am I required to pay a company up front for their work? Kris, owner of One Stop Home Shop in Newcastle, opened this business in order to fulfill all of her customer’s needs. We have brought together many local contractors and businesses related to home maintenance and renovations all under one roof. Custom-

ers can take pride in supporting local businesses, and take comfort that they will receive great service. Kris and her husband, owner of A+ Home Works, recognized a need for such a business. Now all the guess work has been taken care of by One Stop Home Shop. Q. What kind of services does your company represent and provide? We have a comprehensive list of products and services as well as contractors, tradespeople, and professionals related to home maintenance and renovations right under one roof. Whether you have decided it’s time for new windows, a new kitchen, a deck or more, we will guide you every step of the way including providing the professional that is insured and experienced in the job. A full list of the services we currently offer is listed on our website, with new ones being added regularly. tion from start to finish. Q. Do I require building permits for home improvements, and does your company take care of that for me? Not all home renovations require building permits. Building codes and local by-laws are often updated. It’s our job to stay up to date and in communication with our local planning department. Building permits can be complicated and require drawings, precise measurements and plans for the proposed project. We are more than happy to assist our clients with this process. Q. What is the benefit in contacting you rather than me just finding a tradesperson on my own? How many times have you opened up the yellow pages seen a sea of contractors and not know where to start? We take all the guess work away from you: we have done all the leg work. You can trust that when you hire a business or use a product from One Stop Home Shop you are hiring a reputable company with quality workmanship and products. Q. I prefer to do the work myself, can I order product from you? Absolutely! We fully support and encourage do it yourselfers. Some of our specialty products are designed for home owners because of their ease of installation and reasonable cost. For example, we supply this great designer stone product that is lightweight and easy to install. Our kitchen cabinets come full assembled as do our exterior railings. We are more than happy to take you step by step through your project by providing the advice you need to get the job done right. Photos by kivellotephotography.com

HystHAIRia Salon & Spa owner/stylist Nicky, hosted our makeover day. She has been in the beauty industry for over twenty years and is also a resident of Newcastle. She has been an educator, product representative, competed in trade shows, and most recently has opened her second Salon location in Newcastle. Nicky’s first salon opened in Port Hope a couple of years ago.

BEFORE Nathalie is a resident of Newcastle and leads a busy life helping others by teaching pilates to older adults, and various other activites.

Using Goldwell products Nicky has selected three colours to enhance Nathalie’s complexion and eye colour. She placed the colour to enhance the style that she has created for Nathalie.

S A L O N Nathalie’s hair required re-shaping the front, angling her bangs for softness. Due to Nathalie’s busy schedule she wanted something that was easy to take care of and re-create. Nicky tailored the cut to work for Nathalie, texturizing to remove volume and teaching her to style it.

Heather professional Aesthetician with HystHAIRia Salon and Spa has chosen browns and coppers to enhance the bright blue of Nathalie’s eyes.

Nathalie looks so vibrant in purple. We choose SILVER jeans and a top by Soya Concept. The handbag is by Guess.

Nathalie is ready to go out for the evening in this grey dressy outfit. The top is by CYC Clothing, and the ruching adds a dressy detail. The beading at the cuffs look like little pearls, so there is no reason to wear a bracelet. The pants are by Tribal, and the handbag is by Guess.

BEFORE EFORE

& After

n Gentle Hands Restoration modernized the kitchen by painting out the pickeled oak in a warm white. The client that owned the house added a new backsplash, counter paint and hardware.

Gentlehands Furniture Restoration

Have you ever wondered what it takes to make a homemade apple pie? Most of us have these ingredients in our pantry, and just look at what you can produce!!! Diana owner of Dee’s Harvest table starts with the ingredients you will find in your own pantry and creates this hard to resist homemade apple pie.

So you moved into your new home and you have a beautiful bay window in your kitchen but not quite enough room for a full table and chairs. We created this vignette to show you the perfect spot to have your morning coffee. By adding a small table, a couple of chairs, and some decorative elements its just asking you to sit and enjoy the site outside your window. We also painted out the wall in a warm beige. All of the products we used to create this vignette was provided by Newcastle Home Decor.

B AC K PA I N During Pregnancy

B

By Dr. Sean Brown & Dr. Waisze Brown

Back pain during pregnancy is a very common occurrence. The extra weight of the growing belly alters your body’s centre of gravity and combined with stretched and weakened abdominal muscles, more pressure is placed on the joints of your back and pelvis. Hormonal levels also increases to relax the ligaments of the pelvis to accommodate for the growing uterus, and to prepare the pelvis for delivery, putting increased strain on the joints and muscles. It’s no wonder that over 50 percent of pregnant women report experiencing back pain! Fortunately, there are ways to help. Strengthening your core muscles will help to add sup-

port to your back, reduce the risk of back pain and physically prepare you for labour. Staying active during pregnancy with low impact exercises will also keep your energy levels up, reduce the likelihood for excessive weight gain and thereby quicken the return to pre-pregnancy weight. It is also found that women who receive chiropractic care during pregnancy report less pain during pregnancy and labour. Some Chiropractors are certified in the specific Webster Technique used to restore proper pelvic balance and function during pregnancy. This allows the uterus and baby to be in an optimal position for growth and deliv-

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE

Have a Will? By Valentine Lovekin

I

In the realm of Urban Myth, one of the great public fears is the spectre of an estate going to the Government. There is an old saying that where there is an estate, there is sure to be a beneficiary. I am acquainted with a civil servant whose job is to locate heirs, wherever they may be. If the government helps to pay estate monies to family, then why have a Will?

viving spouse without triggering a deemed disposition. This requires a Will. If there is no Will, then the assets of the deceased are treated as if they were sold at fair market value on the day before death. If the assets had appreciated in value, the taxes become payable right away.

WHAT IS A FAMILY?

Another reality of marriages is that many end before death. In Ontario, if a married person receives an inheritance, the spouse is entitled to half of the money if the couple break up. A professionally drafted will can contain a clause to avoid this outcome so that the inheritance does not fall into the beneficiary’s net family property.

When I meet with clients about a Will, I like starting the interview by making a family tree. I am surprised almost every time when I see how complex some families become. There are children, adopted children and step-children. Similarly, there are parents, step-parents and friends who have taken the place of parents in the lives of some clients. The law can be a blunt instrument for dividing complex families into haves and have nots. This is only the first reason why a professionally drawn Will is advisable.

DEATH AND TAXES There are two certainties in life. In both cases, we opt to delay the inevitable as long as possible. In the case of married couples, it is possible to transfer assets to the sur-

FRACTURED FAMILIES

THINK SMALL Frequently, a lot of heartache -or conversely a lot of satisfaction- comes from gifts which are often small in monetary value. I think of the time I acted for another lawyer, who later left me a pen. A Will can provide gifts to favoured charities, more remote family members or to friends who were important to the person in life, bit who would not have inherited without a Will being in place.

The law can be a blunt instrument for dividing complex families into haves and have nots. This is only the first reason why a professionally drawn Will is advisable. REST IN PEACE One last thought about passing away is that the estate trustee is the person in law responsible for decisions concerning the burial arrangements of the deceased. Where there is a complex family, there may be different thoughts about burial or cremation and choosing a final resting place. Leaving a Will does not guaranty agreement but it ensures that there is a person who has the final word. A thoughtful Will not only saves money, but it avoids family conflict and makes the crisis of death more manageable for the living.

At Lovekin Law, we believe in viewing every client and issue with a fresh and active approach,

guided by our experience and creativity. We offer a wealth of services in the areas of:

Together our team of knowledgeable, friendly and experienced professionals provides the right support and information to ensure that our clients are confident in their decisions - and satisfied with their results.

Clinic needed to save hundreds of pets

Pet overpopulation in the Durham Region is a crisis with hundreds of kittens, puppies, cats, and dogs being sent to the region’s animal control facilities every few months, never to come back out. Spay and neuter is the only humane answer. Sterilizing animals means fewer unwanted animals being born and a better chance for existing animals to be adopted out. Currently, Durham does not have any local low-cost spay and neuter options available for pet owners or animal rescue groups.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE THIS CLINIC A REALITY

SPAY NEUTER INITIATIVES is a local registered charity partnered with the OSPCA to raise money to open a high volume spay neuter clinic in Durham Region. SNI is developing high-volume spay/neuter programs that will be openly accessible to all citizens of Durham Region. SNI is looking for volunteers and donors to help bring awareness and fundraising to this URGENTLY NEEDED clinic. More than one organization is needed to solve this crisis in Durham Region.
