Dear Readers,

W

elcome to the first edition of Newcastle Today. This magazine is much different than anything Endless Publications has published in the past. We are very excited about the content, and introduction of this magazine. Our approach is a more modern look, and presentation. You will see photography throughout Newcastle Today provided by Cec Mackesey our featured photographer.

Newcastle is diverse in services and people. We have strived to bring you a valuable resource to our neighbours, realizing there is much more to our town than meets the eye. Our growth is shown in the new developments we have seen in recent years and present day. More business has come to town which is needed for our population growth. During our research prior to conceiving the magazine, many of our business owners expressed the need and necessity of a publication just for Newcastle. We would like to extend a thank you to all of our advertisers and contributors for believing in our concept of Newcastle Today. We would also like to thank Cec Mackesey for his time and unique approach to photography, bringing our vision to life. I also would like to extend a special thank you to a wonderful woman and friend Michelle Jansz for playing an integral part in bringing life to the magazine. Also thank you Michelle for taking the reins while I was unavailable for a couple of weeks. Couldn’t have done this without you! We are distributing 4200 copies through Clarington This Week newspaper, including Newtonville and Wilmot Creek. We will also be hand distributing additional copies throughout town. Please go online to www.endlesspublications.com and click on our advertisers websites and social networking pages to learn more about their products and services. Enjoy! See you in a few months.

Clarington Residents Leading Exceptional Hospital Team As a member of the Lakeridge Health Board of Trustees, I get to see first-hand an amazing team of professionals who give their all every day to improve the quality of health care for Durham families. Throughout our hospital sites in Bowmanville, Oshawa, Whitby and Port Perry there are many Clarington residents who work with compassion and courage on behalf of their friends, families and neighbours who come through our doors. At the front of the helm are two Clarington residents, Lisa Shiozaki and Dr. Tony Stone. Together they provide direction and support to our nurses, doctors and entire health care team, making sure your needs come first. Lisa Shiozaki is a Newcastle resident, a Registered Nurse and our Executive Vice-President & Chief Nursing Executive of Lakeridge Health. She’s responsible for vast majority of programs at Lakeridge Health, so whether you are having a baby, visiting our emergency department or attending our Cardiac Rehab program you are receiving care at a service that our Newcastle neighbour is leading.

MEET CEC Mackesey Amateur Photographer

Q.

How long have you been a resident of Newcastle?

My wife and I started our family in Clarington 30 years ago and have spent nineteen of those years in Newcastle. It’s a great place to raise a family, and we raised three kids in this great community that I am proud to be part of.

Q.

What inspired your passion for photography?

There are actually a couple of reasons that inspired me to pursue and learn about photography. My full time position is very stressful and I required an outlet that was just for me. I have always been a great animal and nature lover and thought it would be great to take my love for the outdoors and translate it into art.

As I am now considered middle aged with a grown family, I started to see the world differently than I did when I was younger. So much time has passed so quickly, and as I am more in touch with my own mortality it really was time to stop and smell the roses. I started noticing the world around me differently, the colours, textures, birds, trees etc. I wanted to capture what I seen through my own eyes and share it, which gives me the greatest joy.

Q.

Is there a specific type of photo you prefer to shoot?

Absolutely, I love to shoot wildlife. Capturing them in their natural habitat and watching them engaged in their surroundings. Their colours, eyes, muscle definition is beautiful. Even watching the small birds collect what is around them to prepare their nests.

NewsastleToday_Magazine_PRESS-June21.indd 12

Q.

What is your favorite time of day to shoot?

Late afternoon up until dusk is the best time. The photographs take on more of a 3D effect because of the light. When the sun is at its fullest, it creates a flat look and makes the picture look almost two dimensional. When the sun is low and starting to set the colours are more vibrant and true without the harsh light.

Q.

I understand you have been recognized by the Canadian Geographic Magazine. That must be a tremendous honour. What picture(s) captured their attention?

I entered a photo contest with for Birds of Canada National Photo Contest sponsored by Canadian Geographic. I submitted my photos of Osprey nesting and my work was short listed and I am still waiting to hear about the final selections. I was very surprised to have received their email, and for such a distinguished magazine to count me as a contender is very humbling.

Q.

Are you planning on taking your passion for photography to a more professional level?

I definitely would like to move to a more professional level. I have recently sold some of my work to a law office in Toronto. I also have an interest in commercial photography for print and creating a gallery of my photography.

6/21/2012 1:11:52 PM

Q.

What type of camera do you use?

When I first decided this was something that I wanted to pursue I contacted a couple of friends of mine that work in a more professional capacity. They suggested both the Canon and the Nikon. I decided to go with the Nikon due to the wide range and availability of different types of lenses. There are two different types I use, one is a Nikon D60 and the other is a Nikon D5100.

Q.

It is apparent that you are active in the community. What volunteer participation has given you the greatest joy?

My first choice would have to be Cub Scouting. It brought kids together, taught them about the outdoors, team work and life. It’s a great tool all kids should be involved in, get up and move away from the T.V. and computers. I also volunteer as the Fundraising Committee Chairperson for Bethesda House. It is a worthy, and unfortunately a necessary cause. I enjoy getting out there to meet people on behalf of Bethesda House for the purpose of fund raising.

Q.

Can you tell me what other volunteer positions you have held?

I have served on many boards to name a few. Past elected School Board Trustee Appointed by LT. Governor of Ontario as Public Member to the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario Past member of the Newcastle Lions Past executive board member of the Newcastle/Bond Head Rate Payers Association Founding member and past Vice President of the CAW Durham Region Environment Council

Present member of Board of Directors of Bethesda House and Chairperson of the fundraising committee. Thank you for taking this time to sit down with me Cec, and especially we would like to thank you for your participation in the first edition of Newcastle Today. Your photography has brought life to our publication.

A Discussion With Jackie Foxall, Owner and Operator of The Castle Cellar

Wine making can seem intimidating but not when you have experts like Jackie and her team to guide you every step of the way, it will be entertaining and fun! She will teach you which wine is pared best with your particular dish, or event, helping you make the best choice possible.

Q.

What type of wine would you say is the most popular amongst your clientele?

We have a few favourites; the Italian Pinot Grigio and Chilean Sauvignon Blanc are our best white wine sellers in the summer. Our Red Cabernet Sauvignon is always a popular favourite. All our fruit based wines are appealing and we have a great selection, with over twenty fruit varieties to choose from.

Q. What would the average saving’s be making your own wine rather than purchasing it? Our wine kits come in approximately one third the price of the LCBO. For example thirty bottles of Glad Hatter Italian Pinot Grigio is $131 complete with labels (personal if you wish) corks and shrink tops. Q. Do you have a best seller? Yes we do, it’s Glad Hatter (The wine with Panache) Italian Pinot Grigio in a five week processing white, and California Cabernet Sauvignon in a five week processing red. Q. Are you a preferred dealer for our area with any particular vineyard? Our supplier is RJ Spagnols whose parent company is Vincor Canada. Check out Vincor’s Key Brands at http://vincorcanada.com/KeyBrands/index.htm

Q. How long does it take to typically make wine? And do you help with the process?

Q. I have seen awards on your wall, can you tell me about them?

The process can vary based on the type of wine. Average time is four weeks; however there are some wines that will require up to eight weeks. Our customer prepares the wine which is only a five minute process. Our team then completes the remainder of the preparation which includes, racking, stabilizing, degassing, and filtering.

RJ Spagnols has recognized The Castle Cellar for Excellence in the craft of winemaking. We are now a RJS Craft Winemaking Academy.

Q. What does a new customer need to know before deciding whether wine making is right for them? We ask specific questions to assist the client on which wine they may enjoy, but most important, what wine would you choose when purchasing from the LCBO. If they have a favourite, we will try to parallel that wine.

The RJS Craft Winemaking Academy is a community of the best and most passionate winemakers across Canada. Our commitment is to provide exceptional product and service and the best possible winemaking experience. The Newcastle Lions Club Years of Service By Terry Graham

In the spring of 1947, the Bowmanville Lions Club sponsored the Newcastle Lions Club. A charter night was held on May 26th, 1947 with Percy Hare as the charter president. The members were from Newcastle and the surrounding area. This is still true today. Over the years, the Lions club has been involved with many activities and supported not only local programs but also International programs. In the early years, the club supported the Newcastle Town Hall with the main hall renovations, bowling alley, Centennial Room, main hall kitchen, and downstairs kitchen. Other projects were the park improvements, arena renovations, supporting local sports teams and building an outdoor swimming pool. All of this was prior to 1980. Since that time our community needs changed. With the municipality adding larger projects, we became partners in major projects; the gazebo and the new outdoor gardens on the west side of the hall, benches outside the library, and the ice resurfacing machine at the arena. The Bowmanville Hospital has received funding in the

NewsastleToday_Magazine_PRESS-June21.indd 20

areas of diabetes, eye care and new builds. Our most recent project is the Memorial Forest located at the Water Front Trail on Cobbledick road. Two hundred and twelve trees have been planted to establish a living memorial for a loved one who has passed. When the need arose; be it a fire, a food basket at Christmas, eyeglasses for a child or a wheelchair, the Newcastle Lions were there in the background providing funding. The Newcastle Lions club applied and received many provincial and federal grants.

6/21/2012 1:12:54 PM

All of the above was made possible by the generous support of the local citizens of Newcastle and the surrounding areas. Over the past 65 years, the Lions have held bingos, Monte Carlo Nights, sale of Nevada tickets, New Years and special dances, catering and bars at weddings, Chili cook off, Down East night, Chicken BBQ, Lion’s millionaires’ night, and the sale of saran wrap and Lions Mints. For 18 years foster puppies have been roaming the streets of Newcastle. They belong to President Jean who has chaired the Purina Walk for Dog Guides in support of the Lions Foundation of Canada. To date with the support of many generous donations, the walk has raised over 300,000 dollars.

In 1997, the Newcastle Lions Club invited their first lady to join the club. Lion Jean Graham was the first and is President this year. We now have many couples in our club who enjoy an evening of fellowship. Our membership is at sixty-five members for 65 years of dedicated service to a great community in Ontario. As our longest serving Lion, Lion Murray Paterson wrote about our first 25 years: “In summing up our first twenty-five years of activity, we are like a team; we have had our good times and sad times; we have worked hard and played hard. We have helped the needy and our community and as individuals we have strengthened ourselves by knowledge that has been generated from this team of Lions. The Newcastle Lions Club can truly say that we have fulfilled our pledge “WE SERVE” We still carry on our motto “We Serve” to this day.

Newcastle Village and District Historical Society The NV&DHS is a not-for-profit society and is operated by volunteers. We are open to the public every Tuesday and Saturday from 9:30 A.M. to noon. The public may reach us at all other times by contacting the President, Secretary or Curator of the NV&DHS. Our objective is to research, collect & maintain objects; documents; and history [1796 to present] pertinent to the Village of Newcastle and surrounding area. To that regard many village families have donated directly to us papers, photographs, etc. concerning both them and the buildings, businesses and farms they (or their ancestors) have built or developed over the years. In 1923 Chester D. Massey (of the Massey-Harris/Ferguson Company ~ which began here in the Village in 1847) donated the Community Hall to the PEOPLE of the Village of Newcastle. This hall is still used by the people of the Village for everything from bowling to weddings & banquets. The NV&DHS is housed in what was originally the Memorial Libary in the Community Hall and is an ideal location to showcase our collection.

Growth Development

Above: View from east of new construction

Newcastle is fast becoming a larger community with the Port of Newcastle, and the new subdivision that is presently being built on the west side of town. Our meeting with Carlo Salazar Manager of Community Planning with the Municipality of Clarington stated there is a planned community to be built north of Newcastle running between Arthur St and Mill St just north of the tracks. It is estimated to be 1500 homes, and there is a possibility of two new schools within

the same development. Mr. Salazar said “the school board has not finalized their decision to build new schools, but discussion is still open.” With more residents, there comes a need for more businesses to provide more choices for our community. Bringing a large company like No Frills to our town opens up job opportunities, and financial growth. We further discussed future commercial development for our community with Mr. Salazar and he confirmed that the corner of Brookhouse and King Avenue East that site plans have been submitted for an Ultramar Gas Station including four to five residential units. In the next 20 years, Clarington’s population is estimated to increase by 50,600 new residents, requiring 20,500 new housing units and will experience an increase of 14,700 more jobs. Mr. Salazar also stated that the population of Newcastle is 11,000 and expects to double by the year 2031. That will increase by 134 percent. This projection is based on the growth from 2006 to present day.
