Semester 1 Fundraiser Recaps

Tvisha Joshi

Over the course of this semester, many students have contributed and taken initiative in organising and executing fundraising events to aid external causes agencies in the community. As a school, we have raised money for a vast range of causes and contributed our efforts towards impacting the lives of those in the community through our actions. So here is a recap of a couple of fundraisers that have taken place so far this year!

The World's Greatest Shave/Crazy Hair Day!

During the fundraiser earlier this term, students volunteered to participate by shaving or cutting their hair for this event, or contributing to the whole school crazy hair day event! The Suzanne Cory team was called “The Bold Stars” and raised over $1500 this year for the World’s Greatest Shave!

Autism Awareness Month: Healthcove

To contribute to the cause of autism awareness, the students of Healthcove took initiative by organising the Butterfly Relay earlier this year, where they raised over $600 for Amaze Australia to support those in our community with autism with both support and social security!

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to come together and learn about our common cultures, history, and accomplishments. During this week, we will explore how each of us can individually help to develop reconciliation in Australia. National Reconciliation Week began as the 'Week of Prayer for Reconciliation' and was extensively embraced by Australia's many religious communities.

This week takes place from May 27th through June 3rd. So what exactly is the significance of these two dates?

The 27th of May marks the anniversary of the referendum that occurred in 1967. It was a referendum to repeal provisions of the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The 3rd of June, 1992 marks the historic Mabo decision wherein the High Court of Australia acknowledged native title. This was an acknowledgement of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples rights over their lands during the British colonisation.

A day before National Reconciliation Week ends (26th May) is National Sorry Day. This day was first held in 1998 and took place in Sydney. It is now commemorated nationwide to recognise and remind people of the mistreatment that ABoriginals and Torres Strait Islanders underwent.

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

National Reconciliation Week is an important time for all Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. For them, it is all about maintaining and establishing respectful relationships between non-indigenous people in the country.

Celebrating this week is crucial as it fosters focus for striving to work towards Australia’s goal of an equitable and inclusive society. It is an ideal time for schools, organisations, universities, workplaces or community groups to advance understanding of reconciliation within their own places or lives.

This special week is mainly organised by a not-for-profit, independent organisationReconciliation Australia. They are responsible for building as well as promoting reconciliation amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to other nonindigenous people. This organisation also assists in organisation private, as well as public activities for schools, early learning centres, universities, councils and workplaces.

Many councils hold events across the country. In 2022, a town hall hosted a community talk who shared stories and raised awareness about National Reconciliation Week.

Reconciliation Australia makes a list of twenty actions for reconciliation. Here are some of them: call out racism, learn about your local history, create culturally safe places, make reconciliation known to everyone around you, act to protect first nations cultures, support economic development, understand political representation and lastly, acknowledge and care for your country!

LGBTQ+ Student Experiences Anonymous

Hello everyone! Happy Pride Month!

This article is all about our cohort and what they think, with that being said here are LGBTQ+ student experiences at Suzanne Cory!

To start with some pressing questions:

What temperature does a gender fluid become solid?

I have no idea. We need to apply the scientific method to this and determine a conclusion from the experiment. What else are we being taught how to write a 600-word poster in our Suzanne Cory careers for? It’s to answer pressing life questions such as this. Someone brainstorm an IV and a DV immediately!!!!

If the 'B' in LGBTQ stands for Bi, so doesn't that mean there are only 2 genders? Just a question yk....

Hey! No stress this is a valid question. Honestly being bi relates to having an attraction to more than one gender identity but those are not limited to men and women, it’s just the most what people know as the most popular. :) For example, you could be bisexual attracted to non-binary people and men only. It’s sort of can be used as an umbrella term to acknowledge that you are capable of being attracted to more than one gender. This differs from being pansexual where you are attracted to ALL gender identities. I know it seems a bit confusing but asking questions is crucial in our society to try to understand, so thank you for not being afraid to ask. :)

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

Now onto my favourite responses: a normal one????

happy pride month. be happy. i am happy.

quite gay not gonna lie. Real.

Here’s more! :)

As a bisexual person, honestly no complaints! I haven't experienced any homophobia or biphobia and everyone I have met has ranged from entirely neutral to supportive! As a nonbinary person it's tougher, there are a lot of people who are against there being more than two genders (including in my own friend group) and the jokes like "oh did I just assume your gender????" or "oh I identify as an attack helicopter!!1!1!" are tiring and really disrespectful imo. It's also hard to get people to use my pronouns.

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

99% alright as an ace, just can't relate to the romance topics my friends bring up sometimes.

I've been blessed to be surrounded by extremely open-minded individuals and fellow queer people for my whole high school experience. Thus, I never really tried hiding my identity as bisexual as it was treated like common knowledge. Me being queer was perceived as mundane as my liking for music or my hair being black. But, I do understand that I also seem 'straightpassing', so I've experienced less aggression for my identity in comparison to the people around me. It aggravates me when I hear people shamelessly talk smack about the LGBTQ+ community while I'm in the vicinity--

it's like someone talking crap about you right in your face. At least in SCHS, the worst I've ever heard is someone saying ' gay people should never step into a church' or 'just don't act gay ' . These are horrible sayings, but they're minimal in comparison to what I've heard of in previous schools.

Overall though I think my experience as queer in high school has brought a lot of happy memories to me. I think I've truly found a found-family amongst friends, and I owe a chunk of that to the LGBTQ+ community and stuff I've learned from them.

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

As someone who mostly sticks to a close group who are mostly queer in some way shape or form, it's not too bad. However, I do occasionally overhear various jokes and misinformation that spread around the school that makes me slightly uncomfortable.

I'm a bisexual girl and I never know if my girl crushes like me or are just being friendly. Also it's really hard to tell who's straight or not, especially since you can't really express yourself at school.

Very slay (cos of my friends and the teachers) and sometimes horrible (due to the homophobia from my cohort)

Overall, not bad! Our school community is quite supportive in ways. However, there is always room for improvement, but so is there in society in general. Everyone, don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be afraid to answer. Keep yourselves safe! :)

Teachers as Animals Krish Jayaprabhakaran

Hello Suzanne Cory!

You may have remembered a survey being posted about “which animal personality do your teachers have?” Here are the responses from our very own student body.

Mr Duckworth

Almost everyone answered that Mr Duckworth was a duck, and everyone’s reasoning was that it was in his name. Honestly, I’m not surprised. However, one slightly salty student said Mr Duckworth was a sloth and their reasoning was that “He said he'd give me 2 values cards. That was 1 and a half years ago. Mr Duckworth, where are my values cards?” Honestly, I think this is beef that should be sorted between Mr Duckworth and this student, but I’d love to see how this goes down. ( Mr Duckworth give them their values cards. :( ) There was also another response for our beloved Mr Duckworth, and this student thought he was a dolphin because he was really fun, smart and carefree.

Mr Kelly

Mr Kelly, a member of the Rothwell leadership team, was called a goat, and the reasoning was: ‘because he is the greatest of all time’. I’m just going to put this out there but if you dislike Mr Kelly you are a part of a rare species.

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

Mr Domas

This was also the same animal a lot of you said resonated with Mr Domas' personality, with the exact reasoning. Another student was really creative with their response by saying Mr Domas was a deer. They believe that ‘he gives off the air of a large but frail herbivore’. The student elaborates, stating that ‘he looks at my accounting classmates with the classic look of disappointment I feel that he resembles a deer in the middle of the road about to be hit by a car.’ WOW.

Sticking with the humanities faculty, a student said Ms Fenby was a cat.

Moving onto the English faculty, first up we have Ms Greaney, who apparently radiates the aura of a rabbit and the reasoning behind it being that she ‘comes off as soft as vulnerable, but could probably gut you if you pissed her off enough. Ms. Greaney has a kill count in the double digits. I have no evidence for this, I just know it's true.’ Interesting.

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School
Ms Fenby Ms Greaney

Ms Lam

Next up, the science faculty, first up we have Ms Lam, who exudes Meerkat according to a student due to her being super organised and confident. To be fair, I couldn’t agree more.

Mr Tran

We then have Ms Nguyen (who’s also the Cory Chronicles’ supervising teacher - please don’t disband us for this) - who is said to emanate the aura of a wolf and the reason being she preys on the marks she gives out to students.

Finally, the maths faculty, and to start off we have Mr Tran, who’s a hamster because ‘he’s a wrecking ball sympathiser (overwatch) and he’s a little short’. I don’t know about you Mr Tran, but I’d keep an eye on all the students taller than you.

Ms Nguyen Mr Lam

Mr Lam, who’s said to be ‘as cool’ as a capybara, which I totally see. This is so accurate. If Mr Lam doesn't give off capybara vibes I don’t know what’s right.

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

Dr King

Finally to finish off we have Mr King, who a student said was a sloth as he’s ‘really chill’.

Honourable Mentions

Mr Rad - Raccoon

Ms Cook - Royal Bengal Tiger“because she’s based”

Dr King (again) - GOAT - “he is him”

Mr Whitmore - Sloth - “sleepy”

Mr Holmes - Golden Retriever

Mr Drummond - Beluga

Ms Dimble - Honey badger - “Honey badgers are very small creatures that look docile, but once provoked they can literally kill a lion.”

Mr Kelly (again) - Otter - “I don’t know, it just feels right Otter is Mr. Kelly is . ”

Ms Muslayah - Honey bee - “She's so prepared and constructive and she just minds her own thing as long as you do all the work, if you don't you kinda get stung.”

A look into the 'Sigma' lifestyle

If there’s one thing Suzanne Cory has an abundance of, besides too many people who play chess for fun, it’s those with a Sigma personality. Whether it happens to be you, or a friend’s friend, you know them, even when you think you don’t, they are hiding in plain sight.

Regardless, the Sigma, according to the extremely reliable and credible source of urban dictionary, is a “self-reliant” person who possesses inhumane work ethic and “does not care about how society perceives them.” Of course, there are other definitions of this elusive category of people, but this is the one deemed the most socially acceptable, something Sigmas may struggle with being, as you will gradually come to realise over the course of this article.

Due to a lack of credible resources available for our research, we were forced to turn to dubious sites (reddit) for information on what a Sigma truly is, and tips on how to become one.

Suzanne Cory High School Cory Chronicles

(Why one would need these tips is beyond us) Responses, despite being less than helpful in terms of advice, were very effective in convincing us to steer clear of these people in the school halls.

One such answer, heavily modified, reads:

“Do you seriously, SERIOUSLY think you could learn how to be a Sigma? Do you think Ted Kaczynski or Walter White just LEARNED how to dominate betas? Really? Let me tell you something buddy, you ####ing can't and the fact that you ' re even asking just shows how much of an eternally … BETA mindset you have. Being a Sigma … ain't a ####ing club. There ISN'T a ####ING [Sigma booth] ... The audacity to think that you can be a Sigma just by reading some """TIPS""" is ####ING REVOLTING.”

Several other responses did provide tips unironically, but some of the most interesting were the ones which outlined their own daily routines to allow, dare I say, normal people, (which they refer to as Betas, or beneath them) a look into their Sigma lifestyles.

Suzanne Cory High School Cory Chronicles

In this article, we will be examining a Sigma’s daily routine in an effort to better understand these types of people, given their numbers in our school’s population are only increasing at an exponential rate. Due to the amount of time Sigmas apparently spend on activities deemed inappropriate for a school publication, we have decided to create our own routine that closely resembles theirs, in an effort to provide you with an insight into…

The Sigma Life.™ (According to our intensive research)

2:00 AM

When you’re a real Sigma, you wake up early. You grind. You lift. You get gains. Take a cold shower. Feel the water energise you. Get ready to be better.

5:00 AM

Lather yourself in the scent of a Sigma*. (Please note that the use of labels advertising them to be for men only is extremely Beta. Sigmas have no bounds, do not let mere societal labels hold you back) *Please email Harguan for a list of acceptable Sigma scents.

5:30 AM

Breakfast time. Go foraging for berries in the wild. The only way to do this like a true Sigma is on all fours. You must be one with the nature around you. If you are still hungry, drink three jugs of black coffee to rejuvenate yourself so that you have the strength to tackle the school day head on.

Suzanne Cory High School Cory Chronicles

5:35 AM

Begin your sprint to school. You live in Melton. Suzanne Cory High School for a Beta, is a 7 hour walk, but for you, the real Sigma, it is a pleasant and quick 3 hour sprint.

9:00 AM

Show up to school slightly late, but it’s okay, you’re a Sigma, you don’t need to care about studies, it comes naturally to you. Sit at the back of class, and never speak. These nonSigmas shouldn’t have the privilege to hear you speak. Growl when someone approaches you.

10:14 AM

Begin the trek to homegroup. Greet your teacher with a polite, yet mysterious nod. Get your name marked off and instantly descend into completing 1,000 push ups with your hands tied behind your back.

10:32 AM

Snack. You only eat the berries that you foraged in the morning. Place your headphones on and listen to real Sigma beats. (Open to recommendations) Sit in the corner of the library and look out the window, a melancholic expression on your face as you ponder about life and the Sigma lifestyle. Ignore anyone who approaches you - they don’t understand

Suzanne Cory High School Cory Chronicles

1:00 PM

Lunch. Eat more berries. Go foraging again in the school oval, and then go for a run. A true Sigma can run 452 laps of the oval in 40 minutes. Upon completion of your run, spend the rest of your time dramatically sighing and brooding near everyone around you in a mysterious manner. They may actively avoid you with expressions of disgust on their face, but they are only playing hard to get.

3:09 PM

Do not run to catch the bus like the Betas around you. Do not get picked up either, you are self reliant. You trust nobody but yourself. Yes, you are different, so you will sprint the 33.7km home.

6:09 PM

If you were running to the best of your ability, you will be home by now. Upon entering the house, go to your room, and scroll through motivational reels on Instagram (you’re not allowed tik tok) to learn more ways about the Sigma.

6:09 PM

Study for Psychology (Silence of The Lambs) or Legal Studies (Better Call Saul) or, alternatively, learn the ways of the functions of an advanced society by watching Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom on ABC kids. Sigmas do not let social constructs such as age hold them back.

Suzanne Cory High School Cory Chronicles

6:55 PM

Dinnertime. Eat 15 raw eggs for protein. Save the eggshells for tomorrow. You are a Sigma, you do not contribute to fickle Beta concepts such as waste.

7:00 PM

Bedtime. Invest in a nightlight. Count sheep to help you sleep. A good Sigma tucks themself into bed, and reflects on their day: what went well, and what didn’t. Make a journal. A good Sigma dreams about the exchange rate.

As you can see, they are curious people. Unfortunately, much to our dismay, none of the self proclaimed Sigmas we talked to were willing to comment on their unique lifestyle, and the ones who did said nothing that made any semblance of sense to the average person, but one did go as far as to say “you either get it or you don’t.”

All in all, we hope that we have been able to provide insight on and further explore the lifestyle of a Sigma. Please remember that you should probably not attempt to follow the routine outlined in this article, nor act like this in real life. If you do, we, the authors, do not take any responsibility for you being pushed to the very fringes of society.

Most importantly, for all intents and purposes, this article is satirical and ironic.

With that being said, do not hesitate to email us if you have any questions or concerns. And remember, Suzanne Cory, stay Sigma.

Food! Facts or Funky? Ojas Panat

Needless to say, Suzanne Cory High School is a melti f cultures. People from all across the globe are represe and while there’s no doubt that each of us is different unites us all:

We all have very polarising opinions on food.

Don’t try to hide it. Deep down inside, there’s something your food preferences that you and you alone think. Does pineapple belong on pizza? Is durian all it’s cracked up to be? Milk before or after cereal? These riveting and moving matters prompted us to delve into this topic and investigate.

We sent out a survey asking you all a few short and simple questions. Well, the people have spoken.

As predicted, there was quite a sharp divide between those who believe pineapple belongs on pizza and those who don’t. 57% of those who answered our survey thought that pineapple has a rightful place on pizza, and honestly, I agree. Hear me out - not only does it add a sweet pop to a usually incredibly savoury food, but it’s scientifically an excellent addition to pizza.

71.6% firmly believe SN’T all that great. Apart from the very strong smell, which the famed chef Anthony Bourdain likened your breath after eating a bit to “smell as if you’d been French-kissing your dead grandmother” (youch), the

taste is actually reminiscent, for most people, of a sweet custard. Considering one of the durian’s closest ancestors is the cacao plant, it’s not surprising that it’s enjoyed by millions around the world.

Now here’s something we didn’t know could be so divisive. Red velvet cake was voted as overrated by 46% of people. What’s not to like about it? While it’s true that it’s got cocoa powder as one of its main ingredients, it’s so much more than a chocolate cake suffering from a nosebleed. The cream cheese icing adds a kick of sour to it and elevates it to a great teeth-staining feast.

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

Now to our most controversial topics. The questions regarding whether or not banana bread is better than regular banana, and if mint chocolate ice cream goes hard, got… AN EVEN SPLIT. That’s right, exactly HALF the people we surveyed don’t like the taste of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Tell me, have you ever brushed your teeth? Used listerine? Chewed gum? I’ve never heard anyone complain about those. So when it comes to ice cream, why do you gag at the thought of it?

Now, let’s get to your own opinions. While these were really entertaining to read through, we were both shocked by a few. While there were a few common ones, some really stood out.

You thank your lucky stars that this survey was anonymous. First up, “Ketchup in vanilla icecream absolutely slaps”.

Ketchup is a great way to carry flavour. Displaying all five basic tastes(umami, sweet, bitter, sour and salty), ketchup tastes almost like a whole meal but vanilla ice-cream is just sweet

We saved our personal favourite for last.

“Why is there no in between option? The options make me feel weird especially the coffee one, hello? There are people who do not like coffee (me!). The options are like ride or die. If I choose one it's like I'm stuck w it for the rest of my life. Anyways, seafood is disgusting.”

emorable Media XO Kitty

aira Alam & Tanisha Samr

Happy winter everyone ~ This is the third installment of Memorable Media, in which I (Sumaira!!) review various pieces of media that have taken my interest. You should definitely read my previous articles about Ace Attorney and Breaking Bad if you haven’t done so! Also, in honour of Pride Month, I will collaborate with Tanisha on this issue to review Netflix’s new Korean drama (although it feels more like an American TV show) XO Kitty!!

We have… quite a lot to say about this one. If you’re looking for something to play, watch or go insane over, look out for Memorable Media every issue ~ (WARNING: THIS ARTICLE MAY CONTAIN SOME SPOILERS FOR XO KITTY)

C Ch i l

Created in 2023 by Netflix, XO Kitty has received a large divergence in opinions surrounding the show. The storyline follows Katherine Song Covey, otherwise known as “Kitty” by her friends and family, as she receives an acceptance letter from the prestigious KISS academy and travels to South Korea. She aims to unravel the secretive backstory of her mother, but more importantly, meet up with her long-distance boyfriend Dae. However, a huge plot twist occurs, and Kitty finds out that her boyfriend had been two-timing her with another girl in Korea named Yuri!!, What she doesn’t know, however, is that it’s actually a fake relationship in which Dae is paid to be Yuri’s boyfriend in order to mask the fact that Yuri is secretly dating another woman. Chaos and laughably cliche events ensue, all of which could have been avoided if these characters possessed something very rare in this show: common sense. I usually have really nice things to say about the media I review, but XO Kitty is unbearably cringe.

At first, I only hopped on the XO Kitty bandwagon Tanisha vented to me about how nonsensical the show thought, surely it couldn’t be that much of a flop? I mea , y actually put in the effort to make the show look aesthetically pleasing.

Kitty Yuri
Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

It seems like all of their efforts were channelled into that one aspect, as they completely neglected any semblance of good writing. I’m a very unbiased person, I like most media, and sometimes, a little cliche can be comforting. However, they just overdo this to the point where it is overwhelmingly corny and unrealistic.

Kitty is selfish, lacks empathy for others and is wholly spoilt. She makes decisions without considering any consequences and whether or not it will affect other people, jeopardising her relationships and her entire future. The results of her terrible decisions ultimately cause the narrative to branch out into smaller side stories that don’t flow very well and confuse the viewer further than it already has. There are multiple plot twists with no build-up whatsoever, and it really just feels like a very rushed “Kdrama” that desperately tries to appeal to Gen Z for that sweet cash.

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School
Dae

Now there were so many loopholes in the story, but the one that baffles me the most is how Kitty made it through four years of long distance relationship, arrived in Korea, and then suddenly announced, "Sorry Dae, I'm in love with someone else, and it's Yuri,” all because she saw her DJ-ing? WHAT?? This whole plot tries to ruin the one good relationship which is Juliana and Yuri. So even though Dae was Kitty’s first love for so long, they must now break up since she likes Yuri and feels a random spark?

Additionally, how could she fall in love with someone who sabotaged her 4 year relationship with Dae. It feels very superficial, as if they needed to push the LGBT agenda to tick off that diversity quota. But then she continues to receive a confession from Minho in the last scene, and appears to be influenced by it, like what? How many people is she gonna crush on at once bro. I really wouldn't be surprised if Kitty developed a crush on Juliana at this point. But going back to the overall gaps in the story, why did Kitty keep giving away her late mothers necklace? Like isnt that something you’d want to keep?

like seriously...

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

But surely we have at least one good thing to say about XO Kitty? Right? Wrong. Well actually maybe, and that maybe is probably from the one character everyone stayed for through the duration of XO Kitty.

Who is that character you may be wondering, well, its obvious… Min Ho. Now if I'm being honest, everything I see related to XO Kitty is always connected to Min Ho in any way possible. From hardcore fans saying Kitty and Min Ho are endgame to just people going crazy over Min Ho and his accent. He was definitely the fan favourite of the show. Multiple classmates of mine that have watched the show stated things such as, “I bet his back hurts from carrying the show.” True. “If it weren’t for him, I would’ve literally stopped watching after the first episode.” Me. “At this point no ones watching S2 if hes not the main lead.” I think you guys get the idea. He IS the best character for most.

Cory High School Cory Chronicles m i n h o.
Suzanne

There is so, so much more we could scream about XO Kitty, but then we would end up writing an entire novel because there are so many things wrong with this show. If you want to watch it for the laughs, definitely do it. The only thing we enjoyed from watching XO Kitty was finding something to cringe at, and of course Min Ho. He really lets you keep your sanity when watching this series.

But if you seek out good writing in TV shows, you might want to take a pass on this one.

Thank you so much for reading our review on XO Kitty!! Please take care of yourself, keep warm this cold winter and until the next installment of Memorable Media ~

Subjects as Colours

Hi everyone! Considering that I’ve been getting attacked for the colours I associate with specific subjects the past few weeks (thanks for that guys :( ), I’ve decided to finally settle the debate and see what all of you guys agree are the right colours for each subject. - Credits to my friend Prisha for the epic(ally controversial) article idea

Starting with the (arguably) worst, most painful, brain-damaging subject - maths. There seemed to be a pretty consistent understanding that maths was definitely blue. I pretty much agree with this, so thanks everyone, I'm safe (for now….)!

To the person who mentioned the tears they shed because of maths….I feel you, I really truly do. Red (or coquelicot, for those of you who are apparently very extra) was a close choice to follow. I received some rather …interesting justifications for this colour choice, especially for those of you who said maths was red. Some of my favourite ones were:

red = stop I don't like it’ (me neither, if that wasn't already obvious)

‘maths is hell and therefore red’

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School
Maths 'coquelicot'

‘my maths teacher keeps wearing red, it burned my eyes’ (my condolences)

'algebra should be red ‘because x ' s are red flags' ‘maths is a capitalist communist construct wherein they are associated with red’ (reminds me of ‘what if 2+2 was actually equal to 5, and we’ve been lied to our whole lives?’).

To the one and ONLY person who associated maths with yellow…..I’m genuinely concerned, how could a braincell-killing subject like maths ever spark such enthusiastic unrestrained joy in one ' s mind?

Science

Moving onto science - most of you guys also agreed that science was (I'm never going to live this down…) green. Apparently bio is responsible for this, because the green of nature is linked to science as a subject.....either that or toxicity, which I can also see the link for.

IN MY DEFENCE) Blue was also a strong contestant, so I'm not completely alone in thinking thatapparently ‘blue is a pro-science anti monarchy socialist fascist regime,’ (are you just stringing random words together at this point?) ‘and since one of their staples is science, that is what science is’.

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

To those of you who think science is either orange or yellow (gamboge - why must you use such advanced, complex words to describe a single colour)….I’m sorry, I do not understand your ways of life, but I aspire to find such enthusiasm for a subject that very much does not spark joy.

'gamboge'

English

English had very, very mixed results - no single clear winner, but the major contenders were yellow, blue and red (....or in one case, sarcoline-). The only reasoning I really got was either ‘black like my soul’ or ‘depressing’, so I can’t say much, but…..as an english person, I pity those of you who have not yet

found the pure and absolute joy that accompanies crying over the Shakespearean masterpiece that is Macbeth.

'sarcoline'

Cory Chronicles Suzanne Cory High School

Humanities

Humanities was sitting on the thin line between a mixed response and single colour, but just tipped over the edge for orange. Once again, there was mostly no specific reasoning (except that hums is the Hufflepuff of the subjects and should therefore be yellow), but orange was closely followed by purple, yellow, brown, or black (or smaragdine…how do you even know such fancy names for colours???).

HPE

Our second last subject was HPE, which, surprisingly, a fair number of people said was green. Not exactly what I expected, but the reasoning was ‘no one really cares about it’ (as a coloured subject…I hope), so I can excuse it, considering that it's a physical-activitydominated subject.

The other main contenders were pink, purple, grey (why on earth would anyone associate a subject with grey??), ‘#34cbd8’ (it's a light turquoise-ish blue - I looked it up so you don't have to, you ' re welcome), or (you guessed it, there's another overly complex colour name coming), fulvous (it's a shade of orange…).

Our final subject in the survey was language (either French or Chinese), which, once again, was a very, very mixed response. There was no colour that was specifically prominent, but the main ones were yellow, red, purple, pink, blue (zaffre. I don't even know how to pronounce that.), or ‘whatever’s left’.

The main reasoning you guys said was that it depends on the colours of the flag of the country, which is fair enough.

y that, with the exception of a few people, pretty reasonable judgement (although most of my associations are different….whoops). Apart from those listed above, the most common reason for associating specific colours with subjects seems to be colour coding - whether that be for folders, labels, books, or even the google classroom pages. Either that, or that apparently multiple of you are ‘psychic, all knowing, mystical beings’ who have ‘revealed the deepest secrets of the universe’ and ‘do not require justification’.

I tried to do some research to see if there was anything scientific which said why we associate specific colours with subjects (key word being TRIED), but all I found were a bunch of random Quora threads...

I'm just going to assume that what you guys say is right. Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey, and to that one person who made me search up the names of all their complex colours for their entire response ... your goals are beyond my understanding.

That's all from me, but Happy Pride Month everyone!!!

Dear Little Miss Helpful,

This is sort of a two-in-one so maybe this will peak your interest. I have a crush on one of my friends, and while we like each other a lot, school is real stressful for both of us so we decided to think about a relationship another time. I don't mind that we ' re not together; having him in my life is more than enough as he makes me really happy. However, one of my closest friends has never approved of him and has been quite critical of him, such as his looks and his friends. While I understand that what she finds attractive is different to me, I find it disheartening that she thinks so negatively of him solely because he is friends with someone who performs better than her in academics. I have also noticed that she no longer talks to me unless she needs something, like asking for help with school. On top of all of that, she has also said some really shocking things to my face which has changed my view of her entirely. I'm just not sure how to approach her anymore.

I hope that maybe you might be able to give me some clarity on this, as I've read your other articles, and you do give such thoughtful, helpful advice.

Dear E,

Thank you so much for trusting me with this letter. Navigating relationships in high school is one of the most difficult (yet formative) experiences you will ever face.

From your letter, I get the sense that your relationship with your crush has changed the way you see your close friend. Love can be a mess

First of all, I thin would benefit reflecting on the people around you and where they fit in your life. As hard as it can be to keep an open mind in situations where we feel we are not being supported and heard, communication is KEY. There is no need to lose a close friend over a misunderstanding, so

ure that your friend y disapproves of your crush and is not exaggerating her hatred in an attempt to be funny. If she is doing it as a joke and you feel her words are negatively affecting you, tell her gently that you feel hurt when she criticises him, as she is an important person in your life and you value her opinion

u feel undervalued in your friendship, as made some comments which have tion of her. If you feel consistently y rom being around your friend, it might be time to let her go. Friendships are a two-way street, and sometimes, we give too much of ourselves away without expecting anything in return. Ask yourself why you are friends with this person. Does she give as much as she takes? Does she make you feel like the best version of you? Does she support and uplift you? Are you proud to be her friend? If not, it is completely fine to distance yourself and surround yourself with people who make your life feel full and happy. Listen to your intuition. To me, it seems like you have made up your mind about this friend already.

I hope you can work through this double dilemma - you can’t see me, but I am cheering you on. As always, I am sending you good vibes and good luck!

Yours faithfully, Little Miss Helpful
